The grocery business is a world of competing demands and even contradictions.

Shoppers are navigating the challenges of rising living costs by spending more cautiously. However, some are still willing to pay a premium for express home delivery. It’s an environment where much focus has been placed on introducing new digital shopping features; however, the largest volume of purchases still occurs in-store, as per the latest consumer behavior study by Capgemini, where I’m global retail lead. In fact, contrary to popular belief, while online shopping is more cost-efficient, in-store shopping often delivers greater margins.

Navigating all this to provide a service that works equally well for consumers and the business is a significant challenge, and we’re seeing grocery retailers apply innovative lateral thinking when tackling it. Before delving into these solutions, it is essential to examine the trends they aim to address.

Fast But Costly: The Challenges Of Rapid Delivery In Grocery Retail

Customer expectations for fulfillment have escalated. What started as next-day delivery evolved into same-day and then two-hour. In some countries like India, 10-minute delivery is becoming more accessible—so much so that consumers can now enjoy food delivery during a train ride , an initiative spearheaded by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation with private partners.

Our report found that consumers are willing to pay an additional 7% of the order value for 10-minute delivery, with Gen Z consumers willing to pay up to 10%. This highlights a significant trend: In non-grocery shopping, prompt delivery has become so standard that, to many, waiting until tomorrow now feels unusual.

However, do these increasingly shorter delivery windows signal a broader shift to online grocery shopping? Far from it. Home delivery and buy online, pick up in-store options often result in low- or even negative-margin services . In cases where automating fulfillment has not been achieved, orders typically require manual picking, which can be costly.

This begs the question: If these services are so costly, why provide them at all? The answer is that they’re a loss leader. The convenience they offer helps to sustain customer loyalty and drive foot traffic to physical stores, where higher margins are achieved. Retailers operating at scale can afford these initial losses to gain long-term benefits, as in-store shopping will remain crucial for grocery retail in the foreseeable future. But how do we prevent eroding margins on digital orders or combine physical and digital for a winning proposition?

Blending Digital And In-Store Shopping

Retailers are challenging the status quo by not only enhancing their online experiences but also integrating digital technology into in-store shopping. My company provides tech solutions to retailers, so I’ve seen how this strategy can enrich the shopping experience and strengthen brand affinity.

The shopping journey begins at home. Before heading to the store, consumers typically create a list—either mentally or physically—of the items they need. This list often includes personal preferences and dietary requirements. Here, technology can play a role. Grocery retailers are beginning to develop apps using generative artificial intelligence to store this information, identify patterns and suggest items tailored to individual needs, tastes and budgets.

In-store, grocers can make check-in the new checkout by implementing solutions that recognize when consumers arrive and direct them to the appropriate aisles and sections for each item. This functionality mirrors the technology used by in-store staff for picking online orders. Augmented reality can further enhance the shopping experience, from home decor to fashion and beauty .

Technology can also be used to turn operational data into customer-facing information. For instance, grocers can use AI to anticipate demand and refine orders from suppliers. Grocers can also use technology to evaluate information from individual stock-keeping units to offer targeted recommendations. For example, Too Good To Go uses AI to help grocers identify goods nearing expiration, estimate how likely the product is to sell and recommend discount rates. This can not only enhance the consumer experience but also help retailers manage inventory more effectively and reduce food waste, delivering purpose with a profit.

Taking Stock: How To Implement Tech That Benefits Everyone

Many grocery retailers are leveraging technology to enhance the in-store experience, making it an integral part of their unified commerce strategy. However, the functionality described here is accessible to all. Businesses do not need to operate on a massive scale to use generative AI, augmented reality or repurposed supply chain and logistics data.

To effectively implement these technologies, it is imperative to establish a governance structure aligned with the company’s vision and goals. Organizations can begin by testing internal use cases of generative AI and digital citizen governance models. Once these are achieved on a broad scale, they can then move to consumer-facing programs. However, it’s important to acknowledge potential roadblocks in this journey.

The initial investment in AI-driven solutions, augmented reality or other digital technologies can be significant. Retailers can mitigate this by starting with scalable solutions that can grow as the business expands. Demonstrating quick wins in smaller implementations can help justify the investment to stakeholders.

Additionally, staff learning curves are an essential consideration. Comprehensive training programs, especially incorporating gamified elements, can enhance engagement and ease the transition. Continuous learning platforms can keep staff updated as the technology evolves.

Furthermore, as retailers collect more data to fuel AI and other digital tools, robust data security measures are paramount. Implementing strict data governance policies, coupled with regular security audits, will help protect consumer information and maintain trust. I’ve observed companies leading these efforts set up data organizations for the future that include governance, testing and production stage gates. This helps protect against failure and enable a transition in organizational culture regarding how data is used.

Ultimately, adopting digital innovation should improve both productivity and efficiency within the organization while elevating the shopping experience for consumers. With a tested strategy in place, execution becomes swift and seamless. What’s more, adopting such technology doesn’t have to just benefit the company operationally. They are innovations that can be good for consumers, too.

Kroger and Albertsons hope to merge but must face a skeptical US government in court first

The largest proposed grocery store merger in U.S. history is going to court.

On one side are supermarket chains Kroger and Albertsons, which say their planned merger will help them compete against rivals like Costco. On the other side are antitrust regulators from the Federal Trade Commission, who say the merger would eliminate competition and raise grocery prices in a time of already high food price inflation .

Starting Monday, a federal district court judge in Portland, Oregon, will consider both sides and decide whether to grant the FTC’s request for a preliminary injunction. An injunction would delay the merger while the FTC conducts an in-house case against the deal before an administrative law judge.

Kroger , based in Cincinnati, Ohio, operates 2,800 stores in 35 states, including brands like Ralphs , Smith’s and Harris Teeter. Albertsons , based in Boise, Idaho, operates 2,273 stores in 34 states, including brands like Safeway, Jewel Osco and Shaw’s. Together, the companies employ around 710,000 people.

Here’s what to know ahead of the hearing, which is expected to last until Sept. 13.

Why do Kroger and Albertsons want to merge?

Kroger and Albertsons – two of the largest grocery chains in the U.S. – announced in October 2022 that they planned to merge. The companies say the $24.6 billion deal would hold down prices by giving them more leverage with suppliers and allowing them to combine their store brands. They say a merger also would help them compete with big rivals like Walmart , which now controls around 22% of U.S. grocery sales. Combined, Kroger and Albertsons would control around 13%.

Why does the FTC want to block the merger?

Antitrust regulators say the proposed merger would eliminate competition , leading to higher prices, poorer quality and lower wages and benefits for workers . In February, the FTC issued a complaint seeking to block the merger before an administrative judge at the FTC. At the same time, the FTC filed the lawsuit in federal court in Oregon seeking the preliminary injunction. The attorneys general of Arizona, California, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Wyoming all joined the federal lawsuit.

Will Kroger and Albertsons close some stores if they merge?

They say no. If the merger is approved, Kroger and Albertsons have agreed to sell 579 stores in places where their stores overlap. The buyer would be C&S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire-based supplier to independent supermarkets that also owns the Grand Union and Piggly Wiggly store brands. Kroger and Albertsons initially planned to divest 413 stores, but the FTC said that plan would not have allowed C&S to be a robust competitor. Kroger and Albertsons agreed to divest additional stores in April. Washington has the most stores that would be divested, with 124, followed by Colorado with 91 and California with 63.

What happens if the Oregon judge issues a preliminary injunction?

If the preliminary injunction is approved, Kroger and Albertsons would likely appeal to a higher court, said Mike Keeley, a partner and antitrust chair at Axinn, Veltrop & Harkrider, a Washington law firm. The case could then move through the FTC’s own judicial system, but since that can take a year or more, companies often abandon a deal before going through the process, Keeley said. Kroger sued the FTC this month, alleging the agency’s internal proceedings are unconstitutional and saying it wants the merger’s merits decided in federal court. In that case, filed in Ohio, Kroger cited a recent Supreme Court ruling that limited the power of the Securities and Exchange Commission to try some civil fraud complaints within the agency instead of in court.

What happens if the Oregon judge agrees with Kroger and Albertsons?

The FTC would likely appeal the ruling, but Keeley said it’s rare for an appeals court to reverse a lower court’s ruling on a merger, so the FTC might decide to drop the challenge. The case could still proceed through the FTC’s administrative process. It’s unclear what impact the presidential election could have on the case. The Biden administration has been particularly aggressive in challenging mergers that it considered anti-competitive, but lawmakers from both parties expressed skepticism about the merger in a 2022 hearing.

If the federal court lets the merger proceed, could state courts still prevent it?

Colorado and Washington have separately sued to block the merger in state courts. That’s an unusual situation; normally states are co-plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit. But both states believe they have a lot at stake. Colorado has more than 200 Kroger and Albertsons stores, while Washington has more than 300. Keeley said both states could seek their own injunctions from a different court if the FTC loses, but it would be surprising for another court to block the merger if Kroger and Albertsons are successful in the federal case.

Price Chopper/Market 32 has expanded its relationship with Toronto-based grocery tech company Invafresh, adopting its Fresh Retail Platform, the tech company announced Tuesday.  

The tech company noted in a press release that the integration of the grocer’s in-store production data with Invafresh's AI-powered system will enable Price Chopper/Market 32 to “forecast intelligently and accurately, replenish orders, plan production and manage inventory.” 

Adoption of the Fresh Retail Platform will also help the Schenectady, New York-based grocer to reduce food waste and provide a fresher experience for its customers, the tech company said.  

“With Invafresh we have increased sales by improving on-shelf availability and have reduced food waste by having fresher products. Because of Invafresh's reliable and easy-to-use application, our in-store teammates can redeploy their time to customer-facing activities, which has led to an overall better shopping experience for our customers,” said Jody Plonski, senior vice president of operations at Price Chopper/Market 32. “Our partnership with Invafresh has helped to prevent 20 tons of fresh food from being wasted each week across our store operations. Invafresh is a key contributor to helping us achieve our sustainability goals, so strengthening our partnership was the right decision for Price Chopper/Market 32 and the communities we serve.” 

Invafresh CEO Tim Spencer noted in a statement that Price Chopper/Market 32 has been an industry leader in food waste reduction, due in part to the use of its inventory management tech.  

“We know that most problems in Fresh are related to forecasting the constant shifts in demand and the need to optimize and match supply and availability,” Spencer said. “With the intelligent forecasting and real-time analytics capabilities of our Fresh Retail Platform, Price Chopper/Market 32 has been able to address those problems and make a measurable impact on the food waste front.”

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.
