A Neighbour is the family or people living near our house. They may live immediately beside us or maybe a little away. They play an essential role in our lives. My neighbour consists of a family of 10 people. It is a joint family. The family consists of grandparents, two couples and four children. They are very well off, and both the brothers run the same family business. Three out of four children study in my school, whereas one is a toddler. The family is very helpful and is always cheerful. Their grandparents go for morning and evening walks with my grandparents. I play with their children every day in the evening. Many times we come back home together. Sometimes my mother picks us back from school, and sometimes their mother does the same. They always participate in our family functions as we do in theirs. They are really helpful neighbors and a blessing in our lives.

It is always good to have a good neighbour because they are the first people who you go to whenever you are too happy or sometimes in need of something. Our next-door neighbours are the Tanejas, whose family consists of grandparents, parents and two children. The grandparents are retired medical professionals, whereas the parents, i.e. the son and the daughter-in-law, are successful entrepreneurs. They are very kind and generous. They never show off their wealth. Whenever they are available, they call us for tea and coffee get-togethers, and whenever we get a chance, we invite them for snack parties and get-togethers.

I remember how difficult the times were when the pandemic hit the world in 2020. Their family helped us a lot with our medical needs. I was also suffering from symptoms of COVID, so they consoled my parents and helped them in the best possible way they could and prescribed me medications. Instead of creating chaos they helped me during quarantine, supplied me with necessary medicines and arranged an oxygen cylinder beforehand so that it could be used wherever it was required, as I had breathing problems for three days. I am thankful to God for blessing us with such wonderful neighbours.

A good neighbour is a found treasure. Neighbours are the ones who share our joys and sorrows, making our lives easier. When we have a good relationship with our neighbours, they are the first to stand by us in need. A good neighbour will always be ready to help you anytime and in any situation. It is always a boon to have a good neighbour.

Sharma stays to the left of our house. They are kind and sweet people. It took a little time to get connected to them at first, but with time we got attached to them. They are a small happy family of six members. Every single member of the family is very sweet. It's been almost seven years since we moved here. Since then, we have celebrated all the festivals together and enjoyed every occasion. The grandma next door always sends me homemade ladoos, and the kids, Sonu and Dolly are absolute sweethearts, and they love playing with our pets every time they come home. Sharma uncle is really a very good person. He is a professor at the University, and aunty is an excellent cook. She is a homemaker.

My mom and sharma aunty love to share their cooking recipes and delicious dishes. I really like her palak paneer and naan, and she never forgets to send it to me whenever she cooks it. They really help us every time we need them. Once my grandpa broke his spectacle, he was home alone; I was too small at the time to help him. He called Sharma uncle for help, and he immediately helped my grandfather to get it fixed. Their grandma next door is a very sweet and cheerful lady. I have hardly ever seen such an amazing personality at the age of 85. She, too, is a retired University professor. I always have a great time talking to her. She shares her personal life experiences from her college days. Also, she shares about the real-life struggles a person faces when they pass out of school and then college. She helps a lot in my mathematics lessons. She teaches many things to my mother, too, as if she is her own daughter. She taught my mother to make pickles and jams and also taught her preservation techniques. She treats my grandmother like her daughter, and most of the time, they are found talking and going for walks together. Both of them are very fond of Bhajans, and they go to the nearby temple with their friends.

We have been celebrating almost all the festivals together. We both invite each other to birthdays, anniversaries and on various other occasions. The best part about our neighbours is they are not at all jealous or intrusive about our matters. It isn't easy to get good neighbours today as some are really curious about your household, whereas some are not even interested in helping you with your needs. Anyone can buy a good house, but a good neighbour is priceless.

My neighbour is the best neighbour.

Introduction

We live in a nuclear family. My father works in an IT firm and my mother is a teacher. I do not have any siblings nor do we have any relatives in the city. We visit my grandparents and cousins only during the summer vacation.

I felt quite lonely when we shifted here initially. However, I soon met Meera, my new neighbour. I was overjoyed to know that she was the same age as me. We were both eight at that time. I got along well with her from the very beginning. We connected very well and I started feeling really better. I was no longer lonely or sad.

Our Bond with our New Neighbour

Just like I became friends with Meera, my mother got along well with her mother. Meera’s mother is a housewife. My mother and she often have evening tea together. We look forward to such days as it allows us to play at each other’s place. We get a chance to play with different toys and games.

On other days, we go together to the park. We play different outdoor games, take swings and enjoy a lot. We also joined the same summer camp during our last vacation. The camp was for three hours daily during the weekdays. We indulged in many activities such as art and craft, dance, music and board games during this time.

Both of us enjoy art and craft work. We prepared many craft items together even after we returned from the summer camp. During the vacations every year, we also visit the malls together. It has been three years since we have been neighbours and it has been a lot of fun.

The kids, on the other hand, played together for hours. The women in the neighbourhood often went together to the market. They helped each other with household chores. They all lived as one big happy family. This tradition continues in the Indian villages even until today.

My experiences with my neighbours.

We live in a society. There are eight families on each floor. There are several floors and many towers in society. This makes it a big neighbourhood. The residential welfare association of our society is very active. They make sure we all celebrate various festivals together. Big events are organized at different festivals. This brings all the neighbours close and helps them bond well. I have had some really good experience living in this neighbourhood but some incidents have not been so good.

Some Good Experiences with My Neighbours

We are on good terms with most of the families living on our floor. My parents understand the importance of maintaining a cordial relationship with the neighbours and thus make an effort to bond with them.

One of the lady living on our floor is very good friend with my grandmother. They both visit the temple during the evening hours. During winter afternoons they sit in the park and knit. My mother often invites her home so that the two elderly ladies can spend time together.

I also have two very good friends in my neighbour. I go with them to the park every evening. We play together as our mothers sit and chat with each other. We also visit each other’s place to play. I feel great to have good friends in my neighbourhood especially because it makes the vacation time a lot more fun. My parents are working. They both go to work in the morning and return only by evening. I stay with my grandparents during the day.

Since they are old they cannot play with me. But they do allow me to call my neighbourhood friends home or let me go there for a few hours after I study for some time. The company of my neighbourhood friends makes my vacations super fun and exciting. I go swimming and cycling with them during the evening hours. The mother of one of my neighbourhood friends accompanies us as we go for such activities.

We exchange gifts with our neighbours on the occasion of Diwali and New Year. We also have lunch or dinner together to celebrate these occasions.

Some Bad Experiences with My Neighbours

While some of our neighbours are really sweet and stand by us in our good and bad times, unfortunately, we also have some troublesome neighbours. We have had our share of bad experiences when it comes to neighbours. Three girls have rented an apartment on our floor. They often play loud music during the late evening hours. This disrupts our sleep. We also have a hard time studying during this time.

We have requested them to keep the volume low many times. But it seems like they do not bother about others. Another one of our neighbours is quite weird. It is a family of four – two kids and their parents. We have tried to approach them and be friends with them. However, it seems like their parents want them to maintain distance from us. They often behave rudely and do not bond well with anyone on the floor.

It is great to have good neighbours. However, not everyone has this privilege. I am glad to have some really nice people in my neighbourhood.

My memories with my neighbours.

We need to relocate to a new place every few years because of my father’s job. It is difficult to adjust to the new atmosphere. It takes time to adapt to new surroundings and people. However, we have been lucky so far when it comes to neighbours. We have always had good neighbours.

The Old Lady in Our Neighbourhood

We shifted to Lucknow when I was five years old. I really loved that place. We stayed there for three years and I made some really fond memories of that place. She prepared tea and snacks for us and welcomed us to the neighbourhood. We felt at home at once. She sat in her front lawn and knitted sweaters during winter afternoons. My mother often joined her to learn some knitting techniques. She once knitted a small blue sweater for my doll. I was overjoyed to receive it.

Many times when my parents went shopping, they left us at Mrs. Shukla’s place. She took very good care of us. Her grandchildren visited her during the summer vacations. We looked forward to that time as we got along really well with those kids. We often invited them to our place and played all day long. Many times, we also went to their place and it was great fun.

The Punjabi Family in Our Neighbourhood

When I was eight years old, we shifted to Chandigarh. It is a beautiful city. It is very well planned with lovely houses and surroundings. We rented an apartment in a good locality. The atmosphere of the place was quite pleasing and so were our neighbours. Our next door neighbours were a Punjabi family. It was a joint family. There were a total of seven members in the family. Their daughter was almost the same age as mine and I got along really well with her. She often came over to our place during the evening and we played for hours.

Sometimes, we went together to the park to take swings and play badminton. She had two brothers who were older than my brother but very friendly. They always called my brother to play cricket with them. My brother looked forward to playing with them. My mother also became very good friends with their mother. They both went shopping together. They often exchanged recipes and chatted for hours. The two years we spent in Chandigarh were really fun. It would not be wrong to say that the Punjabi family living in our neighbourhood made it even more fun.

The Gujrati Couple

I also cherish the one year we spent in Indore. I was eleven years old when we shifted to this city. It was quite different from the cities I had lived in earlier. A Gujarati couple lived in our neighbourhood. They had bought an apartment close to ours just a few days before we shifted.

So, even they were busy unpacking and decorating their place at the time we shifted. The place was as new to them as it was for us. So, the lady often went out to explore the nearby places with my mother. She cooked delicious curries and often gave us some portion. I loved her warm and friendly nature. Her husband was also very polite and helpful.

Good neighbours enrich our childhood experiences. I am glad we have had some really nice ones. I hope we continue to meet such beautiful and helpful people in the future as well.

Who He is: I live in a populous area of Chittagong city. There are about five thousand people in the ward where I live. All of them are my neighbors. I have a good relationship with them. We respect and care for each other. Among all my neighbors one is very special to me. His name is Shahabuddin Ahmed. He is a school teacher . He teaches in B. M. High School which is situated in our ward. He is about forty years old. He is a married person and a father of two children — one son and one daughter. His wife is also a teacher of the same school. I have known him for about ten years.

Qualities of a Good Neighbor: All neighbors are not good. A good neighbor should possess some good qualities. He must be sympathetic, compassionate, frank, honest , polite, and well-behaved. He must have tolerance and fellow-feeling. He should also be honest, sincere, and trustworthy.

Why I Like Him: Mr. Shahabuddin Ahmed is a very polite and courteous person. We exchange greetings whenever we meet. He is very hospitable. On different religious occasions and festivals, my family goes to visit his house. His wife prepares different delicious dishes and entertains us. They also come to our house and we try our best to entertain them. In this way, a strong bond has been created between his family and mine. He is reliable and trustworthy. He is also generous and compassionate. In my need, I can rely on him. At those moments of emergency, he comes forward to help me with all his might. Once my father had to undergo a major operation. That needed a lot of money. At that point in the crisis, he lent us a big amount of money. I also paid him back in time and always try to help him in his need.

He possesses some other social qualities, too. He is frank and sincere. He holds nothing back to anybody. He never backbites or finds faults with others. He is simple and modest by nature. If anybody in the locality falls in any difficulty, he extends his helping hand to him. He also participates in social welfare activities. He always attends to his sick neighbors. So he is loved and respected by all.

Conclusion: My neighbor Shahabuddin Ahmed is a good man and a good neighbor. Over time, he has become my best friend . I share my joys and sorrows with him. If I have any problem I want to consult him. I think he is always sincere and eager to help. Our relationship is one of mutual love and respect.

Our neighbours are the people who live close to our house. I have always known the importance of maintaining good relations with my neighbours. Man is a social animal and he always wants to have cordial relations with others. No one likes to live in solitude. A bad neighbour must be kept at a distance because too much familiarity with such a neighbour can cause avoidable unpleasantness for us. He can become a nuisance and day and night we can become the victims of such neighbours. We should always attempt ways to be in the company of good neighbours. My next-door neighbour is Mr Mohit Verma. I consider myself lucky to have him as our neighbour. He is an extraordinary person. Mr Verma is a good and decent man. He and his family are cordial to one and all and they believe in maintaining a good rapport with all the people in our colony. His family is very social they often arrange small get-togethers and parties where the elders sit together while all the children enjoy their parent’s attention while they play with the other children living in the colony. Mr Verma is a doctor and he always helps his neighbours in times of need. He never refuses to visit a patient even in the middle of the night. He has hardly ever displeased anyone. He is polite and well mannered. His kindness has spread through the colony and all the people in our colony try to be like Mr Verma. On the other hand, I have another neighbour called Mr Mittal who is the exact opposite of Mr Verma. He is the most uncultured man I have met. He has an ill temper, he is selfish and never likes to share anything with his neighbours. He picks up fights very easily and he is very foul-mouthed too. No one likes to talk to him. He and his family generally keep to themselves as no one likes to mingle with people who are self-centred and petty-minded. Mr Verma has set a good example for us all and we all hope that he will continue to be our neighbour for a long time to come.

Let’s Talk About Our Grief

T he American path for what is socially accepted in grief is narrow. There’s the perceived need for a brave face, the getting over it, the worry of becoming a burden. There’s the Sisyphean pursuit of closure. There’s the frequently misinterpreted “five stages”—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—which were neither meant as a prescription for how to grieve nor, originally, even really about grief at all. (In her 1969 bestseller On Dying , psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross , who coined the term, wrote about the “stages” a terminally ill person goes through as they grapple with their own death. Only much later did she also apply it to that of a person grieving another.)

Then there’s the business of getting back to work, back to life while grieving. After a one-off memorial, Western social norms ask us to keep it quiet—keep it private.

No one has ever wanted to live the pain of loss, but it’s only in the past century or so that silence amid grief has become so deeply standardized in the U.S. Even into the early-20 th century there was a time for wearing mourning clothes and corresponding on black-bordered mourning stationery. By the 1960s, discussions of grief had become “a morbid self-indulgence,” according to the English anthropologist Geoffrey Gorer—infringing, he wrote, on the “enjoyment of others.” I’ve seen this shift unfold in my own life, too. After my mother died of metastatic melanoma, I struggled with others’ expectations of my grief. I don’t blame those around me. But a tension undoubtably existed: How far should they reach into my life, and, conversely, how much was it reasonable for me to ask?

No doubt we need a better, more empathetic way to support those who are grieving. It starts by flipping the private-public paradigm of grief.

Part of that will come from reframing how we think about loss. For instance, I currently live in a house divided into a few apartments. I’m relatively close with my neighbors. Even so, I was barely able to find my words once I learned that a neighbor’s parent was in hospice. My first impulse: Would it be too much to say something?

What if, however, I reframed my deliberation as basic decency? Too often I find myself believing that asking about another’s loss or emotional pain is akin to requesting their bank account info, a hyper-intimacy. What if instead I—and I might broaden here to an American “we”—considered opening up a conversation about grief not as a social overstep but as friendly decorum? The underlying assumption is that people are reluctant to discuss loss. If the goal is closure then you’re more helpful not opening the wound. But, in my experience, I’ve found something of the opposite to be true.

While researching my book The Grief Cure , I traversed the U.S. to meet with scientists, technologists, and scholars, and explored the new ways people are facing and trying to overcome loss. This meant spending evenings alone in strange cities. Sometimes, I went out to bars to read, just to be around others, where I often ended up speaking openly about my mother’s death. I wasn’t pushing it, but I wasn’t bashful either. It tended to come up naturally when I explained why I was in town. What I found came as a shock: strangers lit up in shared recognition. In even mentioning my mother’s death, many felt like they too could speak about their own experiences with loss. Moreso, almost everyone was dealing with something. Grief boils beneath so many interactions yet, in a grief-repressive culture, its discussion requires a mutual permission-giving.

One middle-aged woman in San Francisco told me her husband had recently passed away and she was struggling both with grief and the guilt of whether she should begin dating again. She said she’d hardly spoken to a soul about it. A young man in Mexico City told me about his dead younger brother and how he’s still the first thing he thinks about waking up and the last before bed. Many people, I believe, want to talk about their loss. They may even want to wear it as conspicuously as one might have before Gorer’s time. Yet in our individualistic culture where grief lives mostly in the shadows, many of us need to know our conversation partner is open to it, too.

Social attachment and trust have fallen off a cliff in the U.S. over the past few years, making this kind of connection even harder. Only 54% of American adults report feeling connected to their local community, according to a 2023 Pew Research Center poll . The numbers drop for younger generations. For adults over 65, 73% say they feel “very” or “somewhat” connected to their community; ages 50 to 64: 64%; 30 to 49: 56%; and, for those younger than 30, only 45% say as much. (The pattern holds even after controlling for the length of time people have lived in a community.)

Loss and the grief that follow are typically understood as an individual’s cross to bear. In part, this is due to the aforementioned weakening of community. But more precisely it may be attributable to the societal atomization in which we each increasingly exist in our own worlds, with our own views, interpretation of facts and understandings. Who knows how someone might react to a bent ear? Better, many conclude, to not broach a perceived thorny topic at all.

The ethical task, then, in grief today is to overcome this idea, and to make room for people to be open about their bereavement. What really is the worst that could happen if, coming from a place of care and vulnerability, you ask about someone’s loss? Because helping someone in grief is not about pushing them along a slender, isolating path toward “closure” or getting “over” it. It’s about being with them, even just available for them, as they transform loss into reflection.

Australians might think they're protected by a raft of privacy laws. But Barbara McDonald, a professor emeritus at the University of Sydney Law School, says this isn't the case.

"There is no general right to privacy in Australian law or any right to sue people for invasions of privacy," she tells ABC RN's Law Report .

Professor McDonald headed up the Australian Law Reform Commission's inquiry into Serious Invasions of Privacy in the Digital Era in 2014.

"There is a patchwork of common law and legislation at federal and state levels. It provides some protection but [there are] lots of gaps," she says.

Take photography, for example.

"Strictly speaking, whatever you can see, you can photograph. There is no law against taking a photograph. Unless, of course, it's for some sort of illicit purpose," Professor McDonald says.

That's why, for example, the paparazzi can get away with snapping celebrities.

"Keeping a neighbour under surveillance can amount to a private nuisance — but it has to restrict their use and enjoyment of [the other neighbour's] land," Professor McDonald says.

Has neighbour surveillance ever made it to court?

In NSW in 1995, there was a landmark case, Raciti v Hughes.

Every time the claimants went into the backyard, their neighbour's camera and lights would come on automatically and film their activities, which they believed interfered with the enjoyment of their land.

Justice Young, who decided that case, has become somewhat legally famous with the line:

"A deliberate attempt to snoop on the privacy of a neighbour, and to record that on videotape, is an actionable nuisance."

That was applied in another NSW case in 2022, when a neighbour set up 17 cameras along a driveway which the claimants were using.

They even included a sign saying: "Smile, you're being recorded."

"The defendant and his wife admitted to spending hours and hours reviewing the footage, for some reason. And in this case, again, the Supreme Court of NSW followed that older case of Raciti v Hughes and held that an action of nuisance was made out," Professor McDonald explains.

What have the courts said about PTZ cameras?

PTZ (pan tilt zoom) video cameras are domed cameras that can follow people by — as the name suggests — panning, tilting and zooming.

And they've ended up in court several times.

One of the first instances was Szann v Council of the City of Sydney in 2012.

The claimants sought permission to install PTZ cameras, but the council and neighbours objected.

The court observed that the presence of domed cameras high on the rear elevation was "a menacing panoptic mechanism positioned to give the neighbours the impression of being constantly observed in their own private rear courtyard".

And this impacted the use and enjoyment of other properties.

Then there was the South Australian case of Shahin v Raedel.

A dispute between the neighbours started in 2009, when the Raedels built a retaining wall. That dispute was then expanded into a battle over surveillance. First, Mr Shahin installed cameras, then Mr Raedel responded with his own cameras.

Continuing tit-for-tat led Mr Raedel to install a more powerful PTZ camera, which scanned around the two properties on a three-minute cycle, looking at the neighbour's property for more than half the time.

"[The judge said] this was a gross invasion of [the] privacy of the claimants. It amounted to an old crime called watching and besetting, and it was held that the action of nuisance was made out again," Professor McDonald explains.

But the judge also said PTZ cameras aren't always inappropriate in a suburban setting.

"What was important was the manner in which they had chosen to install and use it. There wasn't a blanket disapproval of PTZ cameras in all circumstances," Professor McDonald says.

What about cameras looking at public areas?

It's a different story when cameras are pointed at the street or other public areas.

"Generally speaking, if somebody has a camera [looking] onto a public street for security purposes, or to capture unpleasant behaviour … there wouldn't be an objection," Professor McDonald says.

There may also be body corporate by-laws in strata blocks about the use of cameras in recording common property.

"But in many cases, they will be there for security," Professor McDonald says.

What about recording sound?

Closed circuit cameras usually only capture an image. But the law has always taken a much tougher line on sound — like listening in on or recording a conversation.

The starting point here is it's generally illegal to record a private conversation where you are not a party. And under federal telecommunication laws, it is generally illegal to record a phone call unless all parties consent.

If you are a party to the conversation, then the law varies across jurisdictions.

In NSW, for example, "people need to be aware that they cannot record a private conversation … even where they're a party to the conversation", Professor McDonald says.

"Although there are some exceptions and defences, for example, where they're protecting their own interests."

However, in Victoria, you can record a private conversation to which you are a party without the consent of the other.

"That's a very significant difference between the law of two states, and I have to say it's very difficult to get consensus on what the law should be on this point."

What can I do if there's a camera pointed at my house?

Professor McDonald says the first — and hopefully last — step is to talk to your neighbours.

"Politely request that they move the camera or change its direction in a permanent way," she says.

"And I would always follow that up in writing with a note, of which you've made a copy, or an email. So you have a record of your written request, which then makes it more unreasonable if they don't act reasonably in response."

Then, if nothing happens?

"Talk to your council. They may be able to help, depending on local government regulations there," Professor McDonald says. Or "if you think there might be criminal conduct, then you can speak to the police".

"Obviously, you want to be able to resolve these sorts of disputes amicably and without expense. So, perhaps seek out a mediation service, [from a] community legal centre, or something like that."

Then there's a "very potentially expensive last resort".

"You might want to head off to court and seek an injunction."

If you're the one wanting to install a camera, Professor McDonald says "it's really important to check your local legislation on this as to what devices are unlawful and how they can be used lawfully and unlawfully".

Also, check whether your device is visible to your neighbours and could cause discomfort.

And if you're not sure — ask them.

How not to write your college essay.

If you are looking for the “secret formula” for writing a “winning” college essay, you have come to the wrong place. The reality is there is no silver bullet or strategy to write your way to an acceptance. There is not one topic or approach that will guarantee a favorable outcome.

At the end of the day, every admission office just wants to know more about you, what you value, and what excites you. They want to hear about your experiences through your own words and in your own voice. As you set out to write your essay, you will no doubt get input (both sought-after and unsolicited) on what to write. But how about what NOT Notcoin to write? There are avoidable blunders that applicants frequently make in drafting their essays. I asked college admission leaders, who have read thousands of submissions, to share their thoughts.

Don’t Go In There

There is wide consensus on this first one, so before you call on your Jedi mind tricks or predictive analytics, listen to the voices of a diverse range of admission deans. Peter Hagan, executive director of admissions at Syracuse University, sums it up best, saying, “I would recommend that students try not to get inside of our heads. He adds, “Too often the focus is on what they think we want.”

Andy Strickler, dean of admission and financial aid at Connecticut College agrees, warning, “Do NOT get caught in the trap of trying to figure out what is going to impress the admission committee. You have NO idea who is going to read your essay and what is going to connect with them. So, don't try to guess that.” Victoria Romero, vice president for enrollment, at Scripps College adds, “Do not write about something you don’t care about.” She says, “I think students try to figure out what an admission officer wants to read, and the reality is the reader begins every next essay with no expectations about the content THEY want to read.” Chrystal Russell, dean of admission at Hampden-Sydney College, agrees, saying, “If you're not interested in writing it, we will not be interested when reading it.” Jay Jacobs, vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Vermont elaborates, advising. “Don’t try to make yourself sound any different than you are.” He says, “The number one goal for admission officers is to better understand the applicant, what they like to do, what they want to do, where they spend the majority of their time, and what makes them tick. If a student stays genuine to that, it will shine through and make an engaging and successful essay.”

Don’t Be Artificial

The headlines about college admission are dominated by stories about artificial intelligence and the college essay. Let’s set some ground rules–to allow ChatGPT or some other tool to do your work is not only unethical, it is also unintelligent. The only worse mistake you could make is to let another human write your essay for you. Instead of preoccupying yourself with whether or not colleges are using AI detection software (most are not), spend your time focused on how best to express yourself authentically. Rick Clark is the executive director of strategic student success at Georgia Institute of Technology, one of the first institutions to clearly outline their AI policy for applicants. He says, “Much of a college application is devoted to lines, boxes, and numbers. Essays and supplements are the one place to establish connection, personality, and distinction. AI, in its current state, is terrible at all three.” He adds, “My hope is that students will use ChatGPT or other tools for brainstorming and to get started, but then move quickly into crafting an essay that will provide insight and value.”

Don’t Overdo It

Michael Stefanowicz, vice president for enrollment management at Landmark College says, “You can only cover so much detail about yourself in an admission essay, and a lot of students feel pressure to tell their life story or choose their most defining experience to date as an essay topic. Admission professionals know that you’re sharing just one part of your lived experience in the essay.” He adds, “Some of the favorite essays I’ve read have been episodic, reflecting on the way you’ve found meaning in a seemingly ordinary experience, advice you’ve lived out, a mistake you’ve learned from, or a special tradition in your life.” Gary Ross, vice president for admission and financial aid at Colgate University adds, “More than a few applicants each year craft essays that talk about the frustration and struggles they have experienced in identifying a topic for their college application essay. Presenting your college application essay as a smorgasbord of topics that ultimately landed on the cutting room floor does not give us much insight into an applicant.”

Don’t Believe In Magic

Jason Nevinger, senior director of admission at the University of Rochester warns, “Be skeptical of anyone or any company telling you, ‘This is the essay that got me into _____.’ There is no magic topic, approach, sentence structure, or prose that got any student into any institution ever.” Social media is littered with advertisements promising strategic essay help. Don’t waste your time, energy, or money trying to emulate a certain style, topic, or tone. Liz Cheron is chief executive officer for the Coalition for College and former assistant vice president of enrollment & dean of admissions at Northeastern University. She agrees with Nevinger, saying “Don't put pressure on yourself to find the perfect, slam dunk topic. The vast majority of college essays do exactly what they're supposed to do–they are well-written and tell the admission officer more about the student in that student's voice–and that can take many different forms.”

Don’t Over Recycle

Beatrice Atkinson-Myers, associate director of global recruitment at the University of California at Santa Cruz tells students, “Do not use the same response for each university; research and craft your essay to match the program at the university you are interested in studying. Don't waste time telling me things I can read elsewhere in your application. Use your essay to give the admissions officer insights into your motivations, interests, and thinking. Don't make your essay the kitchen sink, focus on one or two examples which demonstrate your depth and creativity.” Her UC colleague, Jim Rawlins, associate vice chancellor of enrollment management at the University of California at San Diego agrees, saying “Answer the question. Not doing so is the surest way we can tell you are simply giving us a snippet of something you actually wrote for a different purpose.”

Don’t Overedit

Emily Roper-Doten, vice president for undergraduate admissions and financial assistance at Clark University warns against “Too many editors!” She says, “Pick a couple of trusted folks to be your sounding board when considering topics and as readers once you have drafts. You don’t want too many voices in your essay to drown you out!” Scripps’ Romero agrees, suggesting, “Ask a good friend, someone you trust and knows you well, to read your essays.” She adds, “The goal is for the admission committee to get to know a little about you and who better to help you create that framework, than a good friend. This may not work for all students because of content but helps them understand it’s important to be themselves.” Whitney Soule, vice provost and dean of admissions at The University of Pennsylvania adds, “Avoid well-meaning editorial interference that might seem to polish your writing but actually takes your own personal ‘shine’ right out of the message.” She says, “As readers, we connect to applicants through their genuine tone and style. Considering editorial advice for flow and message is OK but hold on to the 'you' for what you want to say and how you want to say it.”

Don’t Get Showy

Palmer Muntz, senior regional admissions counselor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks cautions applicants, “Don’t be fancier than you are. You don’t need to put on airs.” He adds, “Yes, proofread your work for grammar and spelling, but be natural. Craft something you’d want to read yourself, which probably means keeping your paragraphs short, using familiar words, and writing in an active voice.” Connecticut College’s Strickler agrees, warning, “Don't try to be someone you are not. If you are not funny, don't try to write a funny essay. If you are not an intellectual, trying to write an intellectual essay is a bad idea.”

Anthony Jones, the vice president of enrollment management at Loyola University New Orleans offers a unique metaphor for thinking about the essay. He says, “In the new world of the hyper-fast college admission process, it's become easy to overlook the essential meaning of the college application. It's meant to reveal Y...O...U, the real you, not some phony digital avatar. Think of the essay as the essence of that voice but in analog. Like the completeness and authenticity captured in a vinyl record, the few lines you're given to explain your view should be a slow walk through unrestrained expression chock full of unapologetic nuances, crevices of emotion, and exactness about how you feel in the moment. Then, and only then, can you give the admissions officer an experience that makes them want to tune in and listen for more.”

Don’t Be A Downer

James Nondorf, vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at The University of Chicago says, “Don’t be negative about other people, be appreciative of those who have supported you, and be excited about who you are and what you will bring to our campus!” He adds, “While admissions offices want smart students for our classrooms, we also want kind-hearted, caring, and joyous students who will add to our campus communities too.”

Don’t Pattern Match

Alan Ramirez is the dean of admission and financial aid at Sewanee, The University of the South. He explains, “A big concern I have is when students find themselves comparing their writing to other students or past applicants and transform their writing to be more like those individuals as a way to better their chances of offering a more-compelling essay.” He emphasizes that the result is that the “essay is no longer authentic nor the best representation of themselves and the whole point of the essay is lost. Their distinctive voice and viewpoint contribute to the range of voices in the incoming class, enhancing the diversity of perspectives we aim to achieve.” Ramirez simple tells students, “Be yourself, that’s what we want to see, plus there's no one else who can do it better than you!”

Don’t Feel Tied To A Topic

Jessica Ricker is the vice president for enrollment and dean of admissions and financial aid at Skidmore College. She says, “Sometimes students feel they must tell a story of grief or hardship, and then end up reliving that during the essay-writing process in ways that are emotionally detrimental. I encourage students to choose a topic they can reflect upon positively but recommend that if they choose a more challenging experience to write about, they avoid belaboring the details and instead focus on the outcome of that journey.” She adds, "They simply need to name it, frame its impact, and then help us as the reader understand how it has shaped their lens on life and their approach moving forward.”

Landmark College’s Stefanowicz adds, “A lot of students worry about how personal to get in sharing a part of their identity like your race or heritage (recalling last year’s Supreme Court case about race-conscious admissions), a learning difference or other disability, your religious values, LGBTQ identity…the list goes on.” He emphasizes, “This is always your choice, and your essay doesn’t have to be about a defining identity. But I encourage you to be fully yourself as you present yourself to colleges—because the college admission process is about finding a school where your whole self is welcome and you find a setting to flourish!”

Don’t Be Redundant

Hillen Grason Jr., dean of admission at Franklin & Marshall College, advises, “Don't repeat academic or co-curricular information that is easily identifiable within other parts of your application unless the topic is a core tenant of you as an individual.” He adds, “Use your essay, and other parts of your application, wisely. Your essay is the best way to convey who your authentic self is to the schools you apply. If you navigated a situation that led to a dip in your grades or co-curricular involvement, leverage the ‘additional information’ section of the application.

Thomas Marr is a regional manager of admissions for the Americas at The University of St Andrews in Scotland and points out that “Not all international schools use the main college essay as part of their assessment when reviewing student applications.” He says, “At the University of St Andrews, we focus on the supplemental essay and students should avoid the mistake of making the supplemental a repeat of their other essay. The supplemental (called the Personal Statement if using the UCAS application process) is to show the extent of their passion and enthusiasm for the subject/s to which they are applying and we expect about 75% of the content to cover this. They can use the remaining space to mention their interests outside of the classroom. Some students confuse passion for the school with passion for their subject; do not fall into that trap.”

A Few Final Don’ts

Don’t delay. Every college applicant I have ever worked with has wished they had started earlier. You can best avoid the pitfalls above if you give yourself the time and space to write a thoughtful essay and welcome feedback openly but cautiously. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect . Do your best, share your voice, and stay true to who you are.

Should fireworks be illegal in Arizona? Your neighbor might think so

Each Fourth of July is marked by fireworks flaring into the sky, creating visual displays of light for families to enjoy. However, residents across the Valley hold different perspectives when it comes to the Arizona regulations regarding fireworks.

Under Arizona law, there are specific dates within the year when consumer fireworks can be used and sold. Fireworks can be legally used and sold in Arizona during May 4-6, June 24-July 6, Dec. 26-Jan. 3 and the second and third days of Diwali each year.

Aerial devices and fireworks that shoot up into the air are still illegal. But residents find ways to get their hands on them from sellers and neighboring states where they're legal.

Mixed reactions on Arizona fireworks laws

Some residents want tighter restrictions on the dates fireworks can be used and better enforcement of keeping aerial fireworks out of the skies.

"If it's going to be a war zone anyway, at least make it just one day," said Earl Thornton, a Phoenix resident. "That way, people can be prepared for it. And that's just a compromise – ultimately, there probably needs to be some sort of reform."

Others are in favor of fireworks and emphasize more education around fireworks use.

"The number of injuries is very, very small compared to the injuries of things like firearms and shootings that happen every day," said Adam Redshaw, a Phoenix resident.
