Let’s face it: For whatever reason, formatting titles can be confusing, especially if you think about all the titles that need proper formatting–the title placed on the title page of a paper, the title of a journal article mentioned in the body of a paper, the title of a newspaper or a website on the list of references. There are titles of books and titles of chapters in those books; titles of blogs and titles of blog entries. Some titles are italicized and some are put in quotation marks. Titles on the list of references require formatting–some titles use title case, some sentence case; some titles are italicized and some are not. And then there are those situations where titles are used in in-text citations–some titles are truncated and italicized; some are put in quotation marks–you get the idea. 

First off, I am not going to address how to format titles when citing in the paper or listing on the list of references—those are formatting guidelines for another time. I am going to focus on titles on the title page, the first page of the paper, and within a paper. Here is what you need to keep straight:

Titles require special capitalization called title case. Title case requires one to

  • capitalize the first letter of the first and last words of a title;
  • capitalize the first letter of all verbs;
  • capitalize all words of four or more letters;
  • capitalize the first letter of all other words except a, an, the, short conjunctions such as “for, and, but,” and prepositions of fewer than four letters (words like “up, in, off”);
  • capitalize the first letter of a word following a colon or dash;
  • capitalize the first letter of a subtitle. 

When a title appears on the title page of an APA Style 7th edition student paper, that title should be centered, bolded, and in title case—no need to use all caps, no need to italicize or underline, and no need to use quotation marks or place a period at the end. 

Simply type out the title using title case and bold it–that’s it.

On the first page of the essay, center and repeat the title, bold it, and use title case. Again, do not use any special formatting. Do not use a bigger font size or style. Do not underline or italicize and so forth. Just use title case, bold, and center the title on the first page of the essay.

Easy enough, right?

Titles that appear within an essay require special formatting in addition to title case. If the title is for an article—content that is part of a greater whole—then the title should have quotation marks around it. If the title is for a book, journal, newspaper, or some other whole work, then the title is italicized.

Let’s say you have an article titled “The New Coffee Culture” that appears in the journal Studies in Popular Culture . Let’s also say that for whatever reason, you name both titles in the body of your paper. The article “The New Coffee Culture” appears in the journal Studies in Popular Culture , so the article is content that appears in a greater whole, right? 

Both titles would be in title case. The article “The New Coffee Culture” would have quotation marks around it, and the title of the journal, Studies in Popular Culture , would be italicized.

The title page is a requirement for all APA papers. The primary role of the title page is to present just that: the title. But that’s only the beginning of what is actually required for a properly formatted APA title page. This is the first chance a writer has to truly engage with the reader.

For students, the title page also lets people know which class, professor, and institution the text was written for. For professional authors, the title page is an opportunity to share any affiliations or conflicts of interest that might be present.

APA Style recognizes two different ways to format a title page. One is for student papers and the other is for professional papers. This guide will examine the difference and provide real-life examples of both.

Both student and professional title pages require a title, author, and an affiliation. Both types of title page also require the same basic formatting, including 1-inch indentations on all sides and a page number in the top right corner.

The primary difference is that professional title pages also require an author note and a running head. However, some professors do ask that you provide some of these elements in student papers. It’s a good idea to know how to format them just in case.

An APA title page for any paper being submitted for a class, degree, or thesis is all about the basics. Here are the elements that should be included in a student title page :

  • Title of your paper
  • Byline (author or authors)
  • Affiliation (department and university)
  • Course name and course number
  • Instructor name

Your professor or institution might have their own formatting requirements. When writing a paper for a class, the first rule is to always pay attention to the instructions.

A professional title page skips the class info and due date, but it includes:

  • Affiliation (division and/or organization)
  • Author note
  • Running head

The author note and running head are generally only required for professional papers. However, some professors might ask that you include one or both of them. Be sure to check the assignment instructions before submitting.

Author/Byline

The correct way to display the author’s name is first name, middle initial, and last name. The most important thing is to prevent the possibility of mistaken identity. After all, there are a lot of papers published every year, and it’s possible that someone else has the same name as you do.

For all author bylines in APA, all licenses and degrees are omitted (e.g., Dr., Professor, PhD, RN, etc.).

If your paper has multiple authors, then they should all be listed in the same way, in order of their contributions. All authors should be on the same line, unless more lines are required.

Here’s an example of a properly formatted byline for a paper with two authors:

Affiliation

The affiliation element is where you identify the place where the work was conducted or who it was conducted for. This is almost always a university or institution. In some cases, there are multiple affiliations for one author, or multiple authors with different affiliations.

Academic affiliations

Academic affiliations include schools, universities, and teaching hospitals. The affiliation line should include the specific department followed by the name of the institution. There is no need to include a location for academic affiliations.

Here is an example of what a basic academic affiliation line should look like:

Non-academic affiliations

Non-academic affiliations are anything that isn’t a school or university, which could be a hospital, laboratory, or just about any type of organization. The affiliation line for a non-academic organization should include the department or division, followed by the name and location of the organization. All elements should be separated by commas.

Course number and name (Student only)

Use the course number and course name as they appear on official university materials. Examples:

  • ENG 204: Modern English Literature
  • PSYC 2301: Research Methodology

Instructor name (Student papers only)

It’s important that you display your instructor’s name in their preferred way. With academics who have multiple degrees and positions, this isn’t something that you should guess at.

It is generally safe to use the course syllabus to see how they prefer to be listed. For example, some use the word “Professor” as their prefix, and many will have PhD, RN, or other type of professional designation.

Due date (Student papers only)

The due date should be presented in the day, month, and year format that is standard to your country.

The page number goes at the top right-hand side of the paper. This is one of the only elements that appears on every single page.

You can add running page numbers to your paper by double-clicking the header portion of the document or clicking the “Insert” tab. It will automatically insert page numbers into the rest of the document.

Author note (Professional papers only)

The author note is usually only required for professional papers. This is where additional data, disclaimers, conflicts of interest, and statements about funding are placed. In some cases, the author statement can be several pages long.

The author note is generally split into four paragraphs, including:

  • ORCID iD (a scientific/academic author ID)
  • Changes of Affiliation
  • Disclosures and Acknowledgments
  • Contact Information

Running Head (Professional papers only)

While some student papers might require a running head, this is something that is typically only for papers being submitted for publication. This is an abbreviated version of your title that appears at the top of every page to help readers identify it. The running title is particularly useful especially in print versions of journals and publications.

The running head does not have to use the same words as they appear in your title. Instead, try to re-work your paper’s main idea into a shortened form.

For example, if your paper’s title is:

“A Mystery of Style: Exploring the Formatting Mechanics of the Running Head According  to APA Style 7th Edition”

Then your abbreviated title can be something like:

“RUNNING HEAD IN APA 7”

“FORMATTING THE RUNNING HEAD”

The idea is to convey only the most important aspects of your title. The running head should be entered in the page header, flush left against the margin, and presented in all-capital letters.

The APA suggests a maximum length of 50 characters (including spaces and punctuation) for a running head. If your title is already 50 characters and under, then you can use the whole thing as the running head.

A title page, or cover page, is like a book cover for your assignment. It provides the most basic details about your assignments, especially those which aid in identification. In that sense, a title page sets the stage for your writing and is related to the overall presentation of your paper.

A title page is not a compulsory element of the MLA system and is only added when specifically required. This means that in most cases, you will not create an MLA title page. You only create one if your instructor or institution requests a title page and specifies the format requirements.

Title page vs. MLA heading

You should not confuse an MLA title page with the MLA heading. The MLA heading appears at the top of the first page of an MLA formatted paper and contains similar information to a title page: your name, instructor’s name, class or course name, and date. Both also come before the main paper copy.

The main difference between a title page and an MLA heading is where and how it is formatted. A title page is on its own page before the main paper copy, centers the text, and spreads the text throughout the title page. An MLA heading appears on the same page on which the main paper copy starts, the heading is aligned to the left, and it only appears at the top of the page.

MLA title page format

Although the MLA system does not have a set format for creating title pages, there are certain basic rules and format settings that you can use to create a title page.

The title page will follow much of the same paper formatting rules that the rest of the paper follows. This includes the following:

  • 1–inch margins around the page
  • Your last name along with the page numbers on the top right corner (Running head)
  • 12 pt. font that is easy to read
  • Double-spaced lines
  • Center-aligned text on the title page (the rest of the paper is left aligned)

The following details are presented on a title page, mentioned in order from top to bottom:

  • University Name
  • Title of Paper
  • Course name and number
  • Instructor’s name

University name

The university name is mentioned at the top of the title page. If the university name isn’t available, you can leave it out because this is an optional element (unless instructed otherwise).

If your affiliation is not with a traditional university/academic institution, you can simply write the organization where the following document is going to be submitted or the organization that the document represents.

Title of paper

This is the key element of the title page. It is placed around the middle of the page, about one-third of the way below the university name.

Ideally, the title should be short and crisp – it should directly address the topic and concern of the paper. The first letter of each word is capitalized, barring the small words, which are usually articles (a, an, the) and short prepositions (of, on, in, to, etc.).

The title uses the same font and font size as the rest of the paper. It should not be bold, italicized, or underlined. There is no need to add quotation marks around the title. However, if your title contains quotes, then only that part needs to be inside double quotes. Similarly, if your title contains the name of a body of work or text, that part needs to be in italics.

Adding a witty title to your paper instantly improves engagement. However, these might not provide sufficient information about the paper. In this case, the title is followed by a subtitle, written directly below it.  In the example below, note that the main title is a quote from the book:

“Dorothea Is Not Always Consistent”:

Analyzing Dorothea’s Changing Desires in George Eliot’s Middlemarch.

Place your name about 4-7 lines below your title. It is presented near the bottom of the page, above the rest of the details. Write your full name, first and last (and middle initial, if you like). Do not present any other details.

The course name and number follow your name. You need not present the full course name; the official abbreviations can be used.

Instructor’s Name

Place their name after the course name and number. Use your instructor’s preferred name designations (Mr., Ms., Dr., Professor, etc.) and use their full name. If you’re unsure, check your class syllabus or ask them what they prefer.

Finally, the due date is written below the instructor’s name. This can either be the due date for submitting the paper or the date of submission. Write in the following format:

  • Day Month Year
  • 7 September 2016

Keep in mind that the title page, or cover page, is only a single page. Arrange the details in a manner that none of the details run over to the next page. You can start numbering your assignment from this page onwards. At the end you will find a Sample Title page, created using the MLA system. The details and format settings for a title page can vary, as it is not a traditional element of the MLA system. So be sure to ask for specifications.

Usually, the MLA format presents these details on the first page of the paper as a heading.

From the top left corner, write the following in order, each on its own line:

  • Your instructor’s name

Starting with the first line of the paper, indent half an inch from the left margin. There are examples below to help.

After the due date, on another line, write the title of the paper and center it. The title should be plan and not be bold, underlines, or italicized.

On the next line after the title, begin your paper. The text should be left-aligned. The first line of each paragraph should be indented by 1/2 and inch.

Also, these two points apply to the entire paper:

  • The font should be standard font size and type throughout the entire paper. Example, 12-point, Times New Roman.
  • Double-space all lines, including the MLA heading and paper title.

MLA style does not recommend using a title page. Instead, it suggests using a header. The header is the first page of a paper. It is also called a cover page. It includes the following elements:

The author’s name

The instructor’s name (or instructors)

The course name

The course number

The paper’s submission date

The title, centered on a new double-spaced line (in regular font without quotation marks)

Continue the paper’s text on the same page after the above-mentioned information. However, if you are instructed to use a title page instead of a header, create one by moving the paper’s text to the next page.

The title page in MLA style provides information about the paper such as the author’s name, the instructor’s name, the course’s name and number, the date of submission, and the paper’s title. An MLA title page looks like this:

APA Style uses a unique headings system to separate and classify paper sections. Headings are used to help guide the reader through a document. The levels are organized by levels of subordination, and each section of the paper should start with the highest level of heading. There are 5  heading levels  in APA. Regardless of the number of levels, always use the headings in order, beginning with level 1. The format of each level is illustrated below:

Thus, if the article has four sections, some of which have subsections and some of which don’t, use headings depending on the level of subordination. Section headings receive level one format. Subsections receive level two format. Subsections of subsections receive level three format. For example:

In APA Style, the Introduction section never gets a heading and headings are not indicated by letters or numbers. For subsections in the beginning of a paper (introduction section), the first level of subsection will use Level 2 headings — the title of the paper counts as the Level 1 heading. Levels of headings will depend upon the length and organization of your paper. Regardless, always begin with level one headings and proceed to level two, etc.

Special headings called section labels are used for certain sections of a paper which always start on a new page.

  • Paper title
  • Appendix A (and so on for subsequent appendices)

These labels should be positioned on their own line at the top of the page where the section starts, in bold and centered. 

APA also allows for seriation in the body text to help authors organize and present key ideas. For lists where a specific order or numbered procedure is necessary, use an Arabic numeral directly followed by a period, such as:

Numbered lists should contain full sentences or paragraphs rather than phrases. The first word after each number should be capitalized, as well as the first word in any following sentence; each sentence should end with a period or other punctuation.

For lists that do not communicate hierarchical order or chronology, use bullets:

If your bulleted list is part of the sentence and is not preceded by a colon, treat the bullets like a part of the sentence, adhering to standard capitalization and punctuation. This option is helpful for complex or longer bulleted sentences that may be more difficult to read without the aid of punctuation. For items in a bulleted list that are phrases rather than sentences, no punctuation is necessary.

Headings identify the content within sections of a paper.

Make your headings descriptive and concise. Headings that are well formatted and clearly worded aid both visual and nonvisual readers of all abilities.

Levels of heading

There are five levels of heading in APA Style. Level 1 is the highest or main level of heading, Level 2 is a subheading of Level 1, Level 3 is a subheading of Level 2, and so on through Levels 4 and 5.

The number of headings to use in a paper depends on the length and complexity of the work.

  • If only one level of heading is needed, use Level 1.
  • If two levels of heading are needed, use Levels 1 and 2.
  • If three levels of heading are needed, use Levels 1, 2, and 3 (and so on).

Use only the number of headings necessary to differentiate distinct sections in your paper; short student papers may not require any headings. Furthermore, avoid these common errors related to headings:

  • Avoid having only one subsection heading within a section, just like in an outline.
  • Do not label headings with numbers or letters.
  • Double-space headings; do not switch to single spacing within headings.
  • Do not add blank lines above or below headings, even if a heading falls at the end of a page.

Headings in the introduction

Because the first paragraphs of a paper are understood to be introductory, the heading “Introduction” is not needed. Do not begin a paper with an “Introduction” heading; the paper title at the top of the first page of text acts as a de facto Level 1 heading.

It is possible (but not required) to use headings within the introduction. For subsections within the introduction, use Level 2 headings for the first level of subsection, Level 3 for subsections of any Level 2 headings, and so on. After the introduction (regardless of whether it includes headings), use a Level 1 heading for the next main section of the paper (e.g., Method).

Creating accessible headings

Writers who use APA Style may use the automatic headings function of their word-processing program to create headings. This not only simplifies the task of formatting headings but also ensures that headings are coded appropriately in any electronic version of the paper, which aids readers who use navigation tools and assistive technologies such as screen readers. 

Here are some tips on how to create headings in some common word-processing programs:

  • If you use Academic Writer to write your APA Style papers, the headings menu in the Writing Center will format headings for you in 7th edition APA Style.
  • Follow these headings directions from Microsoft to customize the heading formats for your future use.
  • To apply Level 4 and 5 headings (which are inline headings, meaning the heading appears on the same line as paragraph text), first type the heading and a few words of the text that follows. Then highlight the text that you want to be your heading and select the appropriate heading level from the Styles menu. Only the highlighted text will be formatted as the Level 4 or 5 heading.

Count Rostov was first introduced to audiences in Amor Towles’ 2016 boffo bestseller A Gentleman in Moscow . Now, it’s been adapted into a Showtime limited series and the eponym is played with old-world panache, charm, and sparkle by a mustachioed Ewan McGregor .

In both iterations of A Gentleman in Moscow , you’ll find much to marvel at. But, it’s not all joy. There is death, contemplation of suicide, famine, the onset of war and other very heavy topics especially given the news today. But coupled with that, and embodied by the singular Count Rostov, is a commitment to finding beauty in the commonplace. That even amidst sadness and privation, there is a persistent glimmer of possibility to cling to. Start by reading and watching the life of Count Rostov unfold. By the time you’re done, you’ll want to, as he does, reach for Tolstoy.

There are, of course, differences between the book and the limited series—and some are of greater import than others. Here are the most important.

Both the novel and the series, airing now, begin with Count Rostov as he is charged by a Bolshevik tribunal with house arrest. Fortunately for him, the luxurious Hotel Metropol is home. Unfortunately, the suite he has long been accustomed to is swapped for a very small room, many stories up, at the top of the hotel. Over the course of eight episodes, and several decades, we watch as his life changes inexorably, with the introduction of surprise, surveillance, comedy, catastrophe, and, most unexpectedly, love.

The fidelity to the novel, unspooled over each episode, is really quite something. As you might expect, that fidelity is best exhibited by the attention paid to the hotel. I’m not the only one who felt that way. I had a chance to ask Amor Towles, who is also an executive producer on the series, about his thoughts.

“When I visited the set in Manchester, England for the first time last March, I was a little anxious," he says. "I was met in the parking lot by Sam [Miller, a director and executive producer], Ben [Vanstone, writer] and the production designer, Victor Molero, who wanted to personally introduce me to the set. Entering the vast sound stage… we turned a corner and found ourselves before the façade of the Metropol. We passed through the revolving doors. And looking around the beautifully realized lobby, my first thought was: Everything is going to be just fine. ”

In the book, Rostov carries regret over the death of his sister, which occurred while he was exiled from Russia after defending her honor in a duel. She, and her legacy, are also featured far more prominently within the pages. There are toasts on the anniversary of her death, frequent reminiscences and an unshakeable grip of guilt around Rostov’s heart. In the show, she is the stuff of indeterminate flashbacks and the subject of a painting which resides in Rostov’s room. "To have one’s book taken up by a large and talented team who share the aim of faithfully translating your story to a visual medium, that’s a whole different level of having a life beyond the binding," Towles says. "Needless to say, it was an exciting development."

The Metropol is peopled with a variety of characters who come in and out of Rostov’s life as time passes. In the series, they are brought to vivid life by a cast that reflects the world we live in more than the one of period Russia. This is most evident in three of the characters who enrich Count Rostov’s life at the Metropol: Fehinti Balogun who plays Rostov’s longtime friend Mishka, Marina as played by Leah Harvey and Andrey, touchingly brought to life by Lyès Salem.

Early on in the book, Rostov is accosted in the barber shop and ends up having to cut his mustache as a result. Later, after being seated in the hotel restaurant, a young girl, Nina, the precocious daughter of a diplomat, approaches him and inquires after it. Nina’s acute perception, curiosity and possession of a skeleton key which opens any room in the Metropol bond the two together from that day forward. In the series, he has the whiskers when he meets Nina—but not for too long.

The young girl with the skeleton key grows from a desire to share mischief to an intense love and trust for Rostov, even as she becomes increasingly pro-Stalin, which is definitely at odds with Rostov. In both the book and the series, Nina leaves her young daughter, Sofia, at the Metropol in order to follow her husband to Siberia, where he is sentenced to a labor camp. Like her mother before her, Sofia and the count became inseparable. Unlike the book, however, we find out explicitly what happened to Nina when we see her body in a mass grave. "Most of the texture of A Gentleman in Moscow springs from the marriage of my imagination with this 30-year interest in Russian culture," Towles says. "In fact, when I began writing the book, I had only been in Russia for a total of 10 days and had never spent the night in the Metropol Hotel. But once I finished the first draft, I flew to Russia and moved into the Metropol where I began the process of revision."

The book is narrated by an omniscient narrator and peppered throughout with poems and transcripts. The show, however, is narrated by a woman’s voice. It isn’t until the tragic conclusion of the fifth episode that you find out it is a grown-up Sofia who is speaking.

Taking away an Olympian’s medal is unusual — but not uncommon. On Sunday, the American gymnast Jordan Chiles became the latest athlete to lose one.

At the Paris Olympics, Ms. Chiles had won bronze in the individual floor exercise. She originally finished in fifth place with a score that was less than one-tenth of a point from third place, but after her coach appealed, she won the bronze. That appeal, however, came four seconds too late, a court ruled, reinstating Ms. Chiles’s original score. The bronze will now go to Ana Barbosu of Romania, according to the International Olympic Committee. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee intends to appeal the ruling.

Several other athletes in Olympic history have had to return a medal — most commonly after a failed drug test or the use of a banned substance. Here are some other notable cases of U.S. Olympians giving up their medals — or winning new ones after another athlete was disqualified.

The American track and field star Jim Thorpe won two gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon in Stockholm, setting a world record in the latter event, with 8,412 points, that stood until 1948.

Published in 2016, A Gentleman in Moscow , by American author Amor Towles, is the story of Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian nobleman who, after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, is sentenced to lifelong imprisonment in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel. The Count must adjust not only to his new circumstances in a small room in the hotel’s belfry but also to the knowledge that his way of life is disappearing under the Bolshevik regime. As the years pass, the Count witnesses his Country changing outside his window, and he must learn to reconcile these changes with the past he holds dear. However, his time in the hotel teaches him lessons he would not have learned otherwise. As the Count befriends people of different nationalities and classes, he finds that “the inconveniences […] have mattered to [him] most” (352). A Gentleman in Moscow explores personal growth, the inevitability of change , and the nature of government and power. The novel illustrates how people’s lives are intertwined and how the present can be informed by but not mired in the past.

Plot Summary

On June 21 , 1922, five years after the Bolshevik Revolution that led to the execution of Tsar Nicholas II, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov appears before the Emergency Committee of the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol Hotel, where he lives in a luxurious suite. He is told he would have been executed had it not been for a poem he wrote years before that seemed sympathetic to the Bolshevik cause. When the Count returns to the hotel, he is brought to a small room in a sixth-floor belfry that once housed servants. Despite the hardships, the Count decides to take the advice of his godfather, Grand Duke Demidov, and to “master his circumstances” (18).

One day not long after his house arrest begins, he is served at the hotel’s Piazza restaurant by an incompetent new waiter, whom he nicknames the Bishop . As he eats, a little girl, Nina, approaches his table and surprises him by asking him personal questions and expressing bold points of view. In the time that follows, the Count meets with Nina frequently. He is struck by her intelligence, lack of intimidation, and seriousness.

Nina explores the hotel with a passkey. She takes the Count on her adventures, and together they visit the boiler room, storage rooms, and other secret rooms that make the hotel run. The Count kicks out the wall of his closet to discover it connects with another room, which he makes his secret study.

One day in September, the Count is visited by his best friend, Mishka. Mishka, a gifted poet and supporter of the Bolshevik Party, has always been out of step with the times; however, the Count is delighted to find that Mishka has become a member of the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers. On Christmas, Nina gives the Count her passkey before leaving to spend the holiday at home with her father.

On the one-year anniversary of his house arrest, the Count is in the lobby when a glamorous woman loses control of her two dogs; he and the woman engage in a short, charged conversation. Later, the Count meets Mishka in the Shalyapin bar, where Mishka hints at a new romance with a poet named Katerina. Later, the woman from the lobby, actress Anna Urbanova , invites him to her room. After dinner and conversation, she surprises him by kissing him and leading him to her bedroom. He angers her by taking it upon himself to hang up her blouse, and the two do not speak for three years.

In the year that follows, Nina grows more and more studious, and the Count sees Mishka less frequently. One night in the Boyarsky, the hotel’s formal restaurant, he is dismayed to find the Bishop is his waiter. A conversation with Andrey, the maître d’, reveals that the Bishop had complained that expensive wines are elitist and go against the Party’s ideals. As a result, all the labels were removed.

June 21, 1926 is the ten-year anniversary of the death of the Count’s sister, Helena . Pondering changing times, the Count attempts to take his life by jumping from the roof of the Metropol; before he can do so, however, a chance encounter with a handyman he’s befriended renews his hopefulness.

By 1930, the Count is the headwaiter at the Boyarsky. He meets daily with Emile, the brilliant but irascible chef, and Andrey, forming a “Triumvirate.” The three defy the strictness of the Bolsheviks by secretly planning to cook a meal using ingredients that are difficult to procure. One day he sees Nina, now 17, and several other young Bolsheviks in the lobby. Nina tells him they are going to help with collectivization, or the confiscation of farmland from wealthy kulaks. Later that evening, the Count has a rendezvous with Anna, with whom he has reconnected.

A Party officer named Osip Glebnikov requests that the Count serve him in a private room. He tells the Count that given Russia’s inevitable position on the world stage, he would like the Count to help him learn about French and English cultures. The two begin a long friendship in which they meet once a month to discuss culture, books, and American movies.

In 1938, Nina approaches him in the lobby and tells him her husband has been arrested and sentenced to five years of hard labor. She begs the Count to take care of her young daughter, Sofia , for a month while she finds a place to live. Over the next couple of days, the Count feels awkward, incompetent, and unable to occupy the time. However, as the Count labors to prepare a bed for her and play games with her, the two warm to each other. Despite the Count’s efforts to communicate with Nina, she is never heard from again.

In 1946, the Count is visited by a haggard Mishka, whom he has not seen since 1938, when Mishka was sent to Siberia for speaking out against censorship. He tells the Count he is working on a special project. In the Shalyapin, the Count meets an American aide-de-camp named Richard Vanderwhile , with whom he engages in a serious conversation about Russia, America, and posterity. That evening, Sofia falls on the staircase and is knocked unconscious. The Count rushes her to the hospital, where Osip helps her receive care and arranges for the Count to return to the hotel in secret. Over the years, Richard, now working for the State Department, continues to see the Count when he visits Moscow.

In 1950, the Count discovers that Sofia is a gifted piano player and that she has been receiving lessons from the Piazza orchestra conductor, Viktor Stepanovich . Richard Vanderwhile talks with the Count about Stalin’s impending death and the importance of their respective Countries remaining friendly. He says he is going to Paris and would like the Count to listen for any interesting news to pass on to him. Anna and the Count continue to see each other when she is in town.

In 1954, Sofia is invited to play piano in Paris with the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries. Meanwhile, the Bishop is now the hotel manager, and he annoys the Triumvirate by attending their daily meetings. The Count begins making mysterious arrangements, stealing guests’ clothing and mapping out routes in Paris.

The night before Sofia leaves for Paris, he reveals his plan with her, leaving her little choice to follow it, despite her fears. Sofia and the Count have an emotional parting. Shortly after she leaves, as he makes his final preparations, he encounters the Bishop, who has discovered his plan. After a tense altercation, the Count locks the Bishop in the basement storeroom.

After her performance in Paris, Sofia dons a carefully-planned disguise and weaves her way toward the embassy in Paris, where Richard Vanderwhile is expecting her. Hidden in her backpack is sensitive information the Count obtained during a dinner with the Council of Ministers. Once the Count, also disguised, receives the signal that Sofia is safe, he himself escapes the Metropol, having written letters of thanks to his friends and enlisted the help of Viktor Stepanovich, who creates a false trail suggesting the Count has gone to Finland. However, with Sofia safely on her way to America, the Count has gone to the Countryside, to the town in which he grew up, where he meets Anna Urbanova in an inn.

APA Headings and Subheadings | With Sample Paper

Headings and subheadings provide structure to a document. They signal what each section is about and allow for easy navigation of the document.

APA headings have five possible levels. Each heading level is formatted differently.

As well as the heading styles, there are some other guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Double-space all text, including the headings.
  • Use the same font for headings and body text (e.g., Times New Roman 12pt.).
  • Don’t label headings with numbers or letters.
  • Don’t add extra “enters” above or below headings.

Depending on the length and complexity of your paper, you may not use all five heading levels. In fact, shorter student papers may have no headings at all.

It’s also perfectly fine for some sections in your paper to go as deep as five levels, where others use only heading level 1.

Heading level 1 is used for main sections like “ Methods ”, “ Results ”, and “ Discussion ”. There is no “ Introduction ” heading at the beginning of your paper because the first paragraphs are understood to be introductory.

Heading level 2 is used for subsections under level 1. For example, under “Methods” (level 1) you may have subsections for “Sampling Method” and “Data Analysis” (level 2). This continues all the way down to heading level 5.

Always use at least two subheadings or none at all. If there is just one subheading, the top-level heading is sufficient.

In addition to regular headings, APA works with “section labels” for specific parts of the paper. They’re similar to headings but are formatted differently. Section labels are placed on a separate line at the top of a new page in bold and centered.

Use section labels for the following sections in an APA formatted paper :

  • Author note
  • Paper title
  • Reference page

The Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov (1891–1940) wrote The Master and Margarita ( Master i Margarita ) between 1928 and early 1940 in a time when the official ideology of the Soviet state was based on militant atheism and obligatory historical optimism. In stark opposition to the Bolshevik’s cultural norms, the novel depicts the devil as the main character and revolves around the grand themes of Christianity.

A “drawer masterpiece,” The Master and Margarita was first published long after the author’s death, between 1966 and 1967, yet in a highly censored form (12 percent of the text was cut by Soviet censors for references to the secret police, nudity, and coarse language). In 1967 a complete version was published in France by the YMCA Press and, soon after that, publication came in Germany by Possev. The uncensored edition was finally published in Moscow in 1973; since then it has been assimilated by the mainstream Soviet and post-Soviet literature and its appreciation has continuously grown. Both its form and themes define The Master and Margarita as a unique masterpiece not only in the Russian literary landscape but also in any Western world tradition ( Salman Rushdie , among others, claims its influence upon The Satanic Verses ). The (mis)alliances between the fantastic and realism, myth with accurate historical fact, theosophy with demonism, romanticism with burlesque proclaim the work’s individuality and position it among the most acclaimed novels of the 20th century.

The Master and Margarita is composed of two parts: 32 titled chapters and an epilogue. The novel alternates between three settings and storylines. The first is Moscow in the 1930s, a city visited by Satan/Woland, a “magician” of dubious origin. It tells the events that occur during four days, beginning on a Wednesday and ending on a Saturday in May. Woland arrives with an entourage that includes a grotesquely dressed valet Fagotto, a mischievous, giant black cat Behemoth, a fanged hit man Azazello, a pale-faced Abadonna with death-inflicting gaze, and a witch Gella. The havoc wreaked by this group targets the literary elite, its trade union, MASSOLIT, and its privileged residence, the Griboyedov’s house. The carnivalesque opening of the book presents the clash between the unbelieving head of the literary bureaucracy, Berlioz, and Woland, depicted as an urbane foreign gentleman who defends belief and reveals his prophetic powers. The witness to this whole episode is the poet Ivan Bezdomny, whose transformation from “modern” to “traditional” and rejection of literature unifies the narrative. His futile attempt to hunt and capture the eccentric gang and warn of their evil and mysterious nature leads the reader to other central scenes and lands Ivan himself in a lunatic asylum. Here we are introduced to the Master, a bitter author whose desperation over the rejection of his historical novel about Pontius Pilate and Christ has led him to burn his manuscript and turn his back on the “real” world, including his lover, Margarita. Important episodes in the first part of the novel include other comic gems: Satan’s show at the Variety, satirizing the vanity and greed of the new rich, and the occupation of Berlioz’s fl at by Woland and his gang.

Part 2 introduces Margarita, the Master’s mistress. Desperate to save her lover, she takes Satan’s offer and becomes a witch with supernatural powers on the night of his Midnight Ball (Walpurgis Night), which coincides with the night of Good Friday. This episode links all three elements of the book together, since the Master’s novel also deals with this same spring full moon when Christ is crucified in Jerusalem. The second setting is the Jerusalem of Pontius Pilate, described by Woland talking to Berlioz—“I was there”—and echoed in the pages of the Master’s novel, which concerns Pilate’s meeting with Yeshua Ha-Notsri (Jesus). Throughout the novel, Bulgakov ties Jerusalem and Moscow sometimes through polyphony, sometimes through counterpoint. The third setting is the one to which Margarita provides a bridge. She flies, accompanied by her maid, over the forests and rivers of Mother Russia, and then bathed and cleansed she reenters Moscow as the anointed hostess for Satan’s great Spring Ball. Standing by his side, she welcomes the dark celebrities of human history as they pour up from Hell. She survives this ordeal without breaking, empowered by her unwavering love for the Master and her acknowledgment of darkness as part of human life. As a prize, Satan grants her deepest wish: she frees the Master and lives in poverty and love with him. In an ironic ending, neither Satan nor God thinks this is any kind of life for good people, and the couple leave Moscow with the Devil on Easter Saturday.

While most critics identify these three main settings or story lines within the novel—those of Woland, Ieshua and Pilate, and the Master and Margarita —other critics agree that The Master and Margarita is a “double novel.” Assuming the risk of oversimplification, we can refer to a structure divided clearly between two main narratives: Woland’s coming to Moscow and the story of Ieshua and Pilate in Jerusalem. These two plots have a distinct approach of style and genre, hence the label “double novel”; nevertheless both intrigue through their symbolism. While the Jerusalem story is consistent in narrative voice and style, the Moscow account is erratic in both. Where the ancient tale has an omniscient narrator, Woland, the Moscow narrative poses the question of the narrator, who seems to be a disembodied voice whose reliability and knowledge are hard to establish. The narrative voice oscillates between personal and impersonal, which raises the issue of ambiguity. The three segments of the Ieshua and Pilate story are cohesive in that they all refer and lead to Ieshua’s execution. The ancient plot is detailed with the historical accuracy of the eyewitness and aims to realism. The Moscow chapters, conversely, are protean in style and story lines, with frequently difficult-to-grasp symbols. The plot is intentionally baffling and scattered: Woland’s coming to the Soviet capital triggers a number of narratives that have no apparent connection to one another. Woland’s companions create mayhem in Moscow: Ivan Bezdomny is sent to a lunatic asylum, where he hears an inmate’s (the Master’s) story of his recent experiences. Margarita turns into a witch and after a while, she reunites with the Master.

The Master and Margarita stands out through its uniqueness, a novel pervaded with a mystifying feeling, where the most fanciful occurrences prove realist, while the seemingly most plausible facts turn out to be phantasmagoric. The multiple layers of meaning lead to ambiguities and hence invite the reader’s imagination. A novel of its time (and for all times), The Master and Margarita nevertheless challenges the materialist philosophy, which constituted the basis of Soviet ideology, by revealing that the purpose of art is the revelation of hidden mystery. Continuing the tradition of fiction by Nikolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and the Russian symbolists, Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita constitutes the natural development of the Russian novel into the 20th century, a masterpiece that is as much universal as it is Russian.

    In MLA format, your essay's title should be in title case. That means every principle word— words that aren't articles, prepositions, coordinating conjunctions, or the word "to" paired with an infinitive—is capitalized.
