It is convenient in some cases, but while in a meeting or attending a lecture, if the mobile phone starts to ring, it interrupts and disturbs everyone.

As communication becomes really easy due to mobile phones, the gripping feeling to text, make calls, or video calls while working, studying, or driving is a big distraction. Reports suggest that close to nine individuals die due to road accidents caused by phone distracted drivers every day. Isolation is also one of the huge negative impacts of using mobile phones. Everyone is busy using mobile phones even if they meet face-to-face, which is also one of the major causes of harm between relationships in an individual’s life.

The health problems due to the massive use of mobile phones are increasing day by day. Playing mobile phone games and having late night chats on bright screen results in damage to the eyes. Technology has become an important part of our lives and it is difficult to imagine life without technological devices such as smart phones. While smart phones are now becoming a commodity due to their several benefits, they may also impose certain costs on the society.

One of the benefits of smart phones is an increase in work productivity. Smart phones now have advanced computing technologies but at the same time they are more portable than laptops. This means one can also perform work tasks while travelling or just sitting in a café. Even students now use smart phones to access course materials on their schools’ and colleges’ websites.

Smart phones allow us to stay connected with others round-the-clock (Andrew). While cell phones also do that, smart phones do not only enable oral communication but also every imaginable form of written communication such as messaging, social media, and emails. In addition, smart phones now often incorporate video technologies which also enable visual communication.

One of the major disadvantages of smart phones is that it is negatively affecting our social lives including face-to-face interaction. First of all, smart phone users are increasingly substituting face-to-face interaction with technological communication. Second, even when smart phone owners are with family members or friends, they are easily distracted by smart phones (Glaser). Another disadvantage of smart phones is costs. It is not uncommon for smart phone users to have data plans to take advantage of the full potential of their devices. These costs can be substantial for low income people.

Smart phones have revolutionized modern societies by allowing individuals to become more productive at work and in studies. Smart phones have also revolutionized written communication in addition to oral communication. But this convenience has come at a cost including deteriorating social relationships.

  Smartphones have changed the lives of people dramatically. Before people had to make an extra effort to send messages and purchase a camera just to take photos. Today, these features are combined into one innovative, rectangular technology that keeps getting smarter and more intelligent every day. Since then, smartphones have never been found outside of people’s reach.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Smartphones

Nearly half of the population possesses a smartphone, according to reports. In a Bank of America survey conducted in 2016, 96% of millennials aged 18 to 24 years even said smartphones are very important to them. 93% of them also suggested that smartphones are more relevant than toothbrush and deodorant. The research also revealed out that a person checks his or her smartphone every 6.5 min.

Let’s learn about how we can benefit from smartphones and what the disadvantages of smartphones are at the same time.

Advantages of Smartphones

1. communications made easier.

Smartphones developed from the earliest devices for communication. It has therefore been built to primarily strengthen the way people interact with each other. The development of technology for smartphones modernized communications. It has paved the way for SMS, text messages, calls, video chat, and applications that allow individuals to connect with others around the world instantly.

Through the advent of smartphones, you don’t have to fear about your family members finding your personal texts and love letters.  Smartphones help you to save this information and protect it. A phone lock system is designed in most smartphones. A pin, code or even your fingerprint can be used to secure your phone. People are blocked from lurking in your private messages.  You only have to make sure others don’t know your password by using a unique password.

Smartphones also make it easier for users to surf the internet. These devices are integrated with mobile browsers that allow websites to be searched and viewed anywhere and at any time. 10% of the total time spent by people on smartphones is used in order to open browsers to surf the internet, according to a survey. Through this, people have simple access to the information.

Your smartphone can work as a GPS device. There are several excellent applications for navigation that will allow you to quickly locate the place. You’ll get directions no matter if you’re a driver or a pedestrian, because you won’t have to go around asking strangers how to get somewhere. Many of the applications even display the traffic jam locations, so this will help you escape the mess and arrive more efficiently.

Smartphones also support education, especially among children. Children can have more immersive learning by watching instructional videos and playing educational apps with easy access to information and helpful content. If they want to find out about a subject, they can also easily surf the internet.

You probably have come to the conclusion that smartphones are super useful, as you have read the things we described above. Not just that, though. Occasionally, we need to relax and have some easy fun. You can watch funny videos, listen to music or play your favorite games using your smartphone.

With the assistance of applications, smartphones can do almost anything. There are over 2 million applications in the Google Play Store, while the Apple App Store has over 1.5 million apps. People spend 90% of their time using apps in which 36 apps are installed by an average user on their smartphone. The functionality of apps differs from each other – picture and video editor, ticket booking, online shop, payment system, data review, personal assistant, etc.

Disadvantages of Smartphones

1. distraction.

With a smartphone, you can be distracted quickly. Since accidents can occur, you have to be careful. Put away your phone and focus if you are driving. Everything that’s on your phone can wait until you get home. With these handheld devices, do not endanger your life. Another problem is social etiquette.

There are several companies that would ask for limited use of smart phones. People appear to lose their attention when they hear a phone ringing and someone steps out to answer the call.   When you’re at an important meeting, don’t forget to keep your phone off. Even when someone is talking to you and you pay more attention to your phone, it can be rude.

Being a cell phone enthusiast, trend and fashion lover will leave you minus a substantial amount of cash maybe every 3 to 6 months.  You want to have that latest brand, that fresh and good looking phone accessory; all result in debits to your wallet. Not to mention airtime credits and internet costs every day.

3. Health Problems

Late night chats and playing games on your phone in bright screen results to eye issues.  Network waves can result in some skin cancers. There is even more if you plan to scrutinize the poor effects of using a smartphone. Among the problems are eye cancer, sleeplessness that induces chronic exhaustion during the day and infertility due to Wi-Fi connectivity.

4. Addiction

Interesting games and social websites are available on smartphones that can contribute to addiction, more so to the kids growing up before they reach the age of ten. Some schools have thus restricted the use of cell phones in school premises.

In the morning, several people wake up and check their phones first. You’re one of them? Yeah, indeed, that’s how important our smartphone is. It’s the first thing we look at before we say a friendly “Good morning” to everyone around us.

Information would no longer be confidential if your phone is stolen. It’s really important to lock and deactivate your phone. You should complain to your service provider that your phone is missing, and it will be deactivated.

To do online transactions, we use our phone and sometimes this information is saved. Someone will be able to access your personal details if you are not careful. It could be someone close to you who has access to your phone. You’ve got to be careful.

6. Uncensored Contents

Finally, there is a downside to quick access to data and the internet. Individuals, particularly children, could see uncensored material, including violence, pornographic content, etc., intentionally or not. If you have kids, make sure that their use of smartphones is limited.

A lot of security threats have also emerged as a consequence of the constant availability of information through mobile phones.

To counter these effects, it is a good idea that one does basic eye muscle exercises, washes eyes regularly, and takes frequent breaks while using the phone.

Parents often complain about their children using mobile phones excessively and thereby losing out on study and playtime. Even in the case of grown-ups, mobile phones often become a distraction from work or other important tasks that a person may be engaged in. A good idea is to designate a specific time window for oneself to use the mobile phone. For instance, students may decide to study for a stretch of one hour and then spend 10 minutes on the phone, and then repeat the cycle. Another idea is to install time blocker apps that alert you when you spend more than the necessary time on any app on your phone.

Mobile phones are incredibly important in today's age of technological growth. Our lives have become simpler thanks to technology. Depending on how a person utilises a mobile phone, it might have both beneficial and bad effects. Since their inception, cell phones have contributed highly to several factors both negatively and positively. Motorola was the first telephone company to demonstrate the first handheld mobile phone.

Cell phones which are currently more reliable enable users to communicate over a two-way network. With this, users can communicate via radio frequencies throughout the world hence making communication easy. This is unlikely while using cordless telephones which have limitations on the area of coverage. Cell phones also do support many interesting features like the internet, Bluetooth. Infrared and also games (Consumer Reports, 2003). One can even take a picture of their choice and send it via the MMS service to another mobile phone. Interesting cell phone Applications can be stored inside the cell phone’s memory. Some feature cell phones also come with a memory slot card which allows the user to swap memory cards of different storage capacities. Keeping in touch with friends and family has never before been this easier and more fun. In the event of an emergency, one can be sure to be able to convey a message regardless of the distance. However, cell phones have also impacted negatively on the user and the community at large.

In as much as the positive attributes of owning a cell phone surpass those of not owning one, there are disadvantages too. Cell phones have been said to be a major cause of road accidents due to overindulgence in calls and text messages whilst driving (eHow magazine). Children with access to high-end cell phones end up getting exploited especially by child predators. There are also concerns that the prolonged use of cell phones could in the long run have side effects on the user, thus causing diseases such as cancer of the skin. Security is also an issue because criminals take advantage of the cell phone’s ability to use different sim cards from different operator companies, to commit crimes like extortion.+

The world being a global village, cell phones play a major role in ensuring improved quality of life through a cheap and personalized communication medium. It is estimated that over 4 billion cell phones are in circulation worldwide. It is my opinion that the cell phone era has succeeded in promoting business among individuals and companies in general. Through cheap communication rates, information is disseminated from point A to point B seemingly effortlessly. An increasing number of companies are now selling cell phones for kids . This is a fast growing market. A study conducted in the USA showed that in average children get their first cell phone at the age of 6 and that parents spend $462 per child in the latest technological gadgets.  The use of interactive screen media, such as smartphones and tablets , by young children is increasing rapidly but still remains  a controversial and understudied issue . Research on the children's utilization of cell phones and new family dynamics  has lagged behind the rate of adoption of these products.

No widely accepted pediatric guidelines regarding smartphone use by young children have been formulated yet. Mobile media differs from television in several ways. In addition to watching videos, small children can play video games , use educational apps and communicate with friends online. Smartphones offer new interactivity and can potentially absorb more time of children lives than previous forms of entertainment and older mobile phones.

• Safety : if the children have phones their parents can always reach them and they can always reach their parents. Moreover there are some tracking applications that serve to keep children under control and know their whereabouts. In fact a study by Child Guide Magazine found that 31% of parents bought cell phones for their kids for security reasons , in case children needed to contact parents. Phones have served the police to locate children that were lost in the forest or mountains.
• Educational value : new interactive media, such as smartphones and tablets offer kids the opportunity of learn while playing. There are apps that help children learning math, languages, acquiring spacial skills, etc. Phones with internet connection can help them to look for concepts or words they do not understand and thus have a positive impact on children's education.
• Responsibility : mobile phones are expensive. Owning a phone can help them develop a sense of responsibility and learn how to manage costs.
• Social benefits : children want to do what their friends do. Most children in rich countries already have phones. Therefore, not having a phone may be considered a sign of social awkwardness. Smartphones are a great way to coordinate activities with other kids. Thanks to their phones children are better connected with their friends even when they are away on holidays. Moreover, according to scientific research  smartphones can facilitate the communication and social skills of children with autism.
• Entertainment : children enjoy their phones as they can listen to music, play video games and watch videos. For their partents sometimes it is very convenient to have them entertained with their phones while they do house chores or drive. Some games such as Pokemon Go may make children also to go outdoors and be more sociable.
• Dangers of the Internet : it's difficult to restrict access to inappropriate content in the Internet. Extreme violence, pornography, anorexia advocacy and ethnic or religious hatred are some of the contents parents would like to their children to avoind at all costs. However blocking all this content is not possible and kids sometimes find ways to bypass restrictions.
• Consumerism and s ocial status : parents buying very expensive phones to their children may be sending the wrong message to their children.  Cell phones, as clothing, can serve as identifiers of the socio-economic background, and, therefore, contribute to create differences among children in school or the playground. Only some families may afford to buy expensive devices, such as the iPhone 6  or the Samsung Galaxy S6, for their children . Moreover the Internet is like a huge 24/7 shopping mall. Children may spend too much time checking things they want to buy.
• Costly : if children do not stick to some rules of usage they may produce great costs for their parents. Losing or breaking a phone is a common incident. Children often get their phones stolen. Moreover, they could download many applications, make calls o utside their cell phones plans  or use 3g or 4G without WiFi connection . Some parents have received  shocking phone bills due to their children's irresponsible usage.
• Procrastination and disruption : kids may be messaging or playing with their phones while they should be studying or paying attention to their teachers. Moreover, children should spend some time playing other type of games or toys such as Lego or Playmobil , which also have educational value.
• Other inapropriate use : some children use their phones to take inappropiate pictures or videos and uploading them to Instagram or Snapchat . Smartphones have become also an instrument for bullying, sexual harrassment and blackmail among children.

Cooper wanted people to have the freedom to use a phone without being tied to their vehicle, home, or desk. Cellular technology concepts had already been created at AT&T, but he and Motorola that a more portable device was possible.

It would take ten years for the first cell phones to hit the market. Since then, the growth of cell phones around the world speaks of the explosive success of this technology. Statista puts the data into perspective.

• 95% of Americans own a cell phone of some type, with 77% saying that they own a smartphone.

For just $40 per month, taxes and fees included, you can have a cell phone line with unlimited text, data, and voice minutes. In the past, you would be forced to pay for every connection and long-distance minute used over a landline.

5. It teaches children how to be responsible. Despite the advice given by conservative bloggers like Matt Walsh, the statistics support the fact that cell phone use promotes more responsibility instead of less.

Dr. Dave Lommen, a clinical psychologist who practices in Grand Forks, suggests that between the ages of 8-11, using a phone for tracking purposes (without an internet connection) is appropriate. Internet access, he says, is appropriate for kids who are 15 and older, depending on needs versus necessity in the household.

Much of this issue depends upon the maturity of the child. Only 37% of teens actually have access to a smartphone. 56% of kids with phones use a password for their device. 70% of parents who have a teen with a phone review text messages sent and received.

They connect parents with their children, grandparents to their families, and even teachers to their students. Anyone can choose to use a cell phone for nefarious purposes, but it is that choice which should be the responsibility of the person using the phone – not the phone itself. Defenders of gun rights say that violence using these weapons involves the person, not the tool. Shouldn’t the same argument apply for cell phone use?

8. Cell phones store our photos and videos conveniently. Most people don’t own a standalone camera today to take to special events. They bring their smartphone with them instead. Several cell phone models offer a camera which takes images above 10 MP. Top models offer front and back cameras which exceed 20 MP. When combined with apps which allow for photo editing, Bluetooth connections, email access, messaging, and much more it is easy to see why market saturation rates for phones are so high.

9. They offer useful entertainment options. Although the entertainment a cell phone provides could be distracting and harmful, it can also provide healthy distractions. One example of this was the development of the free game Pokémon Go. Looking at the game forums, you will find people walking over 2,000 miles over the course of a single year with this game. Some people have traveled over 7,500 kilometers with their app.

10. You can share video in real time. More than 1.6 million vehicular crashes occur because of cell phones. 94% of teen drivers recognize the danger of using a cell phone while driving, but one-third of them still use it anyway. 1 in 5 accidents involving a teen driver and a fatality include cell phone use.

2. Increased data access can lead to student cheating. In 2009, CBS News reported that high-tech cheating was already on the rise in schools. About 25% of middle school and high school students said that they didn’t think storing notes in their cell phone to use during an exam was cheating. 35% of students admitted to using their cell phone as a way to cheat in school, while another 52% said that they used the Internet to facilitate cheating at least once.

Parents have a different perspective on this issue. Although 76% said that cheating with a cell phone was an issue at their child’s school, only 3% actually said that they knew their child had used the device to cheat in some way.

3. There is the cost to consider when purchasing new cell phones. As of December 2018, the most expensive cell phone meant for the average person to use is the iPhone XS Max. The 64 GB version of this cell phone currently retails for $1,099. According to the India Times, specialty makers have created phones for wealthy customers which far exceed that price tag. The Vertu Signature Touch, for example, begins at $9,000 and goes as high as $19,000. The Tonino Lamborghini 88 Tauri retails for $5,250. Or you could opt for the Gresso Regal Gold, which retails at $6,000 and goes up from there.

4. Cell phones promote higher levels of e-waste in our trash and recycling systems. Many cell phone owners trade in their device for a new one every 12 to 24 months. With old phones often discarded instead of being recycled, added e-waste comes into our processing systems around the world. Many of the elements of modern phones are toxic with a significant exposure, with lead being one of the greatest dangers.

5. The batteries on cell phones can overheat and potentially explode. There is also the issue of the lithium-ion batteries to consider. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is the most recent example of this issue with cell phones. After two recalls of the phone and $5 billion in costs, an irregularly-sized battery caused overheating. There is so much more we can do with it, for example, using GPS, entertainment, music, sending pictures, etc.

There is no doubt that these gadgets are very useful, and they do help our everyday lives. But like in most things, there are pros and cons to it. Some cons of using cell phones are that it can give you lack of sleep, put you in dangerous situations, give you health risk, a distraction from the world, and more. With about 6.8 billion people with phones, this impacts our society a lot. Making our society rely on our phones 24/7. There was clever experiment that MIT did with teen and adults. Professors made giving up smartphone for a day a requirement of the students in their courses. Most of the students, who could plan what day they’d give up their phones, felt some degree of anxiety. They didn’t know what to do with the extra time, from eating breakfast to riding on public transportation. One average american checks their phone about 80 time a day. Some even 300 times.

We hear a lot about screen time and how bad it is for us. But, at the end of the day, everybody needs them for their own use. What was on a desktop computer, is now in our pockets. But things still dont change, phones are still bad. What we can do, is limit our use of using our phones. There are many different approaches to reducing our use. Some people actually take a method called digital detox. Which are just a number of days of tech-free world. A device holiday if you may call it. Others download apps to limit their use. These apps limit your use by blocking access to distracting applications like games or social media. But still leave the necessary apps, and still give time to the other apps so you do have something to enjoy after a long day. But like most people, we don’t want to limit ourselves that much we are bored all day. Some tips on limit ourselves are; instead of using a phone as a alarm, use an alarm clock and charge your phone somewhere else before you go to sleep. This will less tempt you to check your phone at night or in the morning. Next is not check your phone at the table. This will make you more social and not look at your phone while talking to someone. And finally is that make plans in advance. Create a schedule about what your going to do and watch so you can better plan when you should study, and do your other important task.

Mobile phones are a vital piece of most children and adults lives. There are certainly many flaws and cons about having one but on the other hand, there are so many benefits of having one. Smartphones have become ubiquitous in our society. A survey found that 95% of students in secondary and higher education have smartphones and more than three-quarters of them use their phones for education. But if that were the whole of the story, then we wouldn’t be concerned about whether smartphones are a good idea in an educational setting. Ever since the release of the first iPhone, educators have debated whether phones are helping or hindering the education process. As with so many tools, the answer lies in how students and their instructors make use of them. In this article, we’ll review some of the top advantages and disadvantages of smartphones for students.

The question of technology in the classroom is an old one. The debate over whether to allow laptops in the classroom presaged the fight over phones, but to some extent this is the same argument that educators have had since Plato claimed Socrates opposed the use of writing in the classroom because it distracted students from memorization. Each new technology creates a moment of panic when educators feel that the challenges new technology pose to the way they’ve been teaching outweigh the effort it would take to adapt to the new technology.

That said, from the student’s perspective, there are many advantages to smartphones.

• They are important for emergencies . Let’s face it, we live in a dangerous world. Although we prefer not to think about it, emergencies happen every day. These can include weather disasters, health crises, fires, and, unfortunately, violent attacks on schools. When emergencies happen, having a smartphone to immediately call for help or to contact loved ones is an essential way of staying connected and staying safe. Many students do not want to be without this important lifeline when disaster strikes.
• They provide instant access to multimedia resources . In the old days, teachers would need to provide demonstrations or display multimedia in the classroom with everyone present in order to show how something works or provide more background and context. However, with smartphones, students can access multimedia enhancements for their lessons whenever they need. They can review demonstration videos several times, and they access supplemental materials in the style that works best for their learning style, such as audio, visual, etc.
• They are portable, allowing for education any time . Smartphones aren’t tethered to the classroom, which means that students don’t have to be physically present in order to learn. Whether they are attending virtual lectures, completing online homework, or consuming supplemental materials on the go, smartphones help students stay connected and keep learning whenever and wherever they are, on their schedule.
• They allow for personalized learning experiences . Smartphones also allow educators to customize the learning experience for each student. When you compete online quizzes or exams through a phone app, the app can adjust the difficulty of the questions to each student’s skill level. Phones can also be used to poll students to gauge their learning in real time, allowing educators to adjust their approach when students aren’t following the lesson. Because phones help to customize education to each student, they can enhance student success and create deeper and more engaged learning experiences for students.

Disadvantages

However, while phones can provide a variety of advantages, they also create challenges that can be a detriment to students’ educational goals.

• Distractions . The single biggest disadvantage of smartphones is that they distract students from their work or lectures. Whether its gaming, social media, or even pornography, smartphones give students a number of distractions that can be more tempting than the schoolwork they are supposed to be focusing on. When students have phones at hand, the temptation to switch over to something more interesting can be overwhelming and irresistible. Indeed, the creators of apps purposely use psychological techniques designed to make them compelling, creating incentives to abandon boring work for the quick hit of dopamine that using an app provides.
• Disturbing other students . Everyone knows how annoying it can be when a phone rings or text messages ding in the middle of a lecture or an exam. While those distractions can be mitigated by asking students to set their phones to silent, what can’t be eliminated is texting and social media postings between students that can create interpersonal distractions and problems in the classroom. From sexual harassment to cyberbullying, a world of hurt can emerge from the secret communications students engage in when instructors aren’t looking.
• Cheating and academic dishonesty . Smartphones also give students access to resources to cheat their way through courses. Students can surreptitiously search for test answers on their phones, or even network with other students who have taken the course in the past to get answers, thus short-circuiting the education process. Why I Changed My Mind About Cellphones in the Classroom

More than a decade ago, I attended a workshop about technology tools in schools. I listened, already converted, as speakers discussed how new technology would transform classrooms. One memorable speaker extolled cellphones as a “powerful computer in the students’ pockets” that could revolutionize classroom learning.

“These kids could have incredibly powerful computers in their pockets,” I thought. “Why shouldn’t they use this amazing tool to take photos, videos, create, research—more than I can imagine!” We just needed to address teachers’ reticence to tech and students’ inequitable access.

So my writing partner, Shara Peters, and I wrote an essay for Education Week Opinion where we quoted the speaker in: “ The Powerful Computer in Your Pocket ,” and talked about bringing smartphones to the classroom.

To give our past selves the benefit of the doubt, our optimistic vision may have been possible at that moment. Phones and the internet are so different now from what they were then. Social media was younger, comprised of posts of people you knew. AI-generated images were toddlers. Siri was a newborn.

In recent years, I have thought a lot about this article. I hear the phrase “powerful computer in your pocket,” and it doesn’t feel good. I now believe smartphones should just not be in classrooms. This may not always be the case, but it is now.

Indeed, at both the schools where Shara and I are administrators, students are no longer allowed to use their phones. We are not alone. As I write this reassessment of my past ideas, Los Angeles public schools have recently banned cellphones in classrooms starting in the 2025 school year, and New York City schools are considering similar action. At least seven states have now enacted restrictions on student cellphone use in school , with other statewide action in the works.

At my middle school, we came to the decision to keep phones out of classrooms two years ago, based on emerging research, as well as personal experience watching students’ attention pulled away from their peers, from their work, from their teachers by notifications .

When I championed smartphones in the classrooms in 2013, the education world was at the height of pro-tech in classrooms. Everything was shiny and tech-focused. But in the years since, a renewed focus on hands-on learning has offered a different model.

I have watched a similar evolution with the elementary to early middle school-aged students on the campus of my school in the summer. When I started at this school in 2017, the summer camp was high tech: Kids walked around with iPads, made music, movies, and played video games. Today, you wouldn’t know it was the same camp. The only vestiges of the old camp are the baking station and the bouncy house. Now, there are blocks and outdoor game setups instead. The kids are doing more imaginative play. It’s swung to the other direction. Kids don’t bring their own electronics, and screen time is limited.

I wouldn’t say that you can’t get joy from a computer or from one of those “computers in your pocket.” I mean, we’ve all watched one of those videos that makes you laugh till you cry or seen an impressive one made by a student. And for all our concerns about the mental health toll of social media use, many students have found a support system in online communities on their devices—communities that are important outlets for them. But pound for pound, there is something joyful, personal, and, dare I say, truly soulful, about touching things in the world as they play, build, and create rather than only doing so through a screen. There is time enough for them to learn to transform the world again through technology in ways we can only imagine.

I don’t regret that Shara and I wrote the essay. What works in education changes with time and research, and we need to be flexible in response. What would be a problem is if I were still saying the kids had powerful computers in their pockets and I thought it would be great if middle schoolers were Snapchatting each other in the bathroom during passing periods. Back in 2013, Shara and I didn’t know then what we know now about the incessant demands of a cellphone and how just having a phone near you can be a learning distraction.

We understand better now how technology affects people, and how we interact with it in an education setting needs to reflect our knowledge of its effects on the brain. Kids making music and movies on their devices is great. We need to find a way to harness that creative potential and continue to access the depths of information available online. We also need to be thoughtful about our students’ use of AI (and our own).

But we also need to balance those features with the human need to interact with others, reflect, touch ( real ) grass, use cardboard and paper, cut with scissors, interact directly with the world, employ physicality, and activate the self and soul. We can’t monitor how screens are used at home, but leaving the phones outside the classroom allows for some balance for kids.

We need to find a way to make this balance happen. All of it. Technology is here to stay, but that doesn’t mean it has to take over in every circumstance, including and especially in schools. Our kids’ brains just aren’t always ready for the fire hose of information that comes through their phones. When determining that correct balance, we could do with a bit more joy, resilience, a whole-child thinking. We don’t throw out the tech, the tools—we teach the skills and help them to create that balance for themselves.

But does that mean students should have a powerful computer in their pockets while they are in classrooms? Apologies to my 2013 self, it does not.
