A clinical trial is conducted when a researcher finds a potential new drug, medical device, surgical procedure or intervention that has the potential of improving the lives of many but still needs to be tested to see if it is effective and safe for humans. In the state of Texas, there are a number of paid clinical trials for willing participants.
Clinical trials can last for many years because the medication or the intervention needs to be tested on many participants to ensure its safety and effectiveness. Many hospitals such as the Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas conduct clinical trials especially to find new treatments for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and hormonal conditions. Hospitals tend to recruit participants by informing patients of the research study inviting them to participate.
On the other hand, pharmaceutical companies that develop new medications or medical devices sometimes need to hire companies to conduct all the different stages of clinical trials for them. These companies are called contract research organizations or CROs.
CROs provide management and support for institutions that need to conduct clinical trials but don't have the expertise or infrastructure to do so. CROs are responsible for recruiting the participants for the study, monitoring the trials, and ensuring that all parts of the study are being conducted according to protocol.
In Texas, there are several CROs that actively recruit volunteers year-round to participate in clinical trials. Some of the major CROs in Texas include: Covance, PPD, and Clinical Trials of Texas.

ABOUT THE CENTER FOR CLINICAL RESEARCH
If you are considering taking part in a clinical trial at The Texas Heart Institute, we encourage you to contact us. All trials must protect patient safety first and foremost. Our investigators carefully follow protocols designed to maximize benefits and reduce risks. We provide eligible patients with an informed consent process where the patients can ask questions and receive study information before deciding to participate. You might be a good fit for one of our current trials if you have any of the following conditions:

The ACT Study is designed to identify the optimal time to check activated clotting time (ACT) after heparin bolus during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Apple Watch Study
This study is designed to test the feasibility of the Apple Watch as a fast self-check tool for detection of heart attack.
BiVACOR (NCT06174103)
The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of using the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart (TAH) System to support adult patients with severe biventricular heart failure, or univentricular heart failure in which left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support is not recommended, who require mechanical circulatory support to sustain life.

A Phase IIA, randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study of single versus repeated intravenous administration of umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy.
COSIRA-II (NCT05102019)
This is a study to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of the Reducer system for treatment of patients with refractory angina pectoris treated with maximally tolerated guideline-directed medical therapy who demonstrate objective evidence of reversible myocardial ischemia in the distribution of the left coronary artery and who are deemed unsuitable for revascularization.

Diuretics Alone vs. Aortix Endovascular Device for Acute Heart Failure (DRAIN-HF). Aortix is a circulatory support device for chronic heart failure (HF) patients on medical management who have been hospitalized for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and have persistent congestion despite usual medical therapy.

An Adaptive Phase 2/3 Multicenter, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized, Parallel, 3 Arm Study to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of DA-1229 (Evogliptin) in Patient’s Calcific Aortic Valve Disease with Mild to Moderate Aortic Stenosis (EVOID-AS).
FMD Registry
The North American Registry for Fibromuscular Dysplasia is a global research effort designed to collect clinical data and provide resources for Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) patients and healthcare providers. The Houston HeartReach Registry is a community-wide registry research study that aims to make improvements in heart disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for all women to help identify trends in heart-health risks in a diverse population of women, develop future clinical trials, and recruit women for future research studies.

The Cardiogenic Shock Phenotyping for the Identification of Cardiac Recovery Biomarkers Study (Phenotype Study) is designed to define the incidence of hemodynamic and functional myocardial recovery in an unbiased patient population treated with Acute Mechanical Circulatory Support (AMCS) for cardiogenic shock.

This study will be a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized, phase 3 study to evaluate the effect of 10mg Obicetrapib in participants with Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) who are not adequately controlled despite maximally tolerated lipid-lowering therapy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke and non-elective coronary revascularization.

Impella®-Supported PCI in High-Risk Patients with Complex Coronary Artery Disease and Reduced Left Ventricular Function: The Protect IV Trial
This is a prospective, multi-site, observational study comparing the performance of an investigational device, the CardioTag, a non-invasive device capable of estimating pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) and other hemodynamic parameters (e.g., mean arterial pressure and cardiac output) to those obtained through a right heart catheterization (RHC) procedure.

The Houston Psychosis Research Center at the Louis A. Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UTHealth Houston is the first research center that leads and coordinates research, treatment, and prevention of psychotic disorders in the greater Houston metropolitan area. We conduct research on psychotic disorders including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform disorder, and related disorders including bipolar disorder, depression, substance use disorders, etc.
Our primary mission is:
- To support clinical and translational research and collaborations aiming at discovering the cause of and more effective treatment and prevention strategies for schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders.
To fulfill this mission, we utilize a wide range of technologies and tools, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), genetic testing, biological sampling, activity and sleep tracking, behavioral tasks, clinical and neuropsychological assessment, and big data analysis.

Human health risk assessment increasingly recognizes the need to integrate participatory-based research, geospatial analysis, and environmental epidemiology, particularly to address contamination concerns in underserved and disadvantaged communities. Here, we demonstrate the combined application of such methods within the Greater Fifth Ward neighborhood in Northeast Houston. In particular, in tandem with community members, we collected soil samples from 193 residential sites using a complete canvassing method from July to November 2021 to characterize contaminant concentrations, focusing on heavy metals and metalloids As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb, Se, Ag, and Hg measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. Individual heavy metals as well as cumulative cancer and non-cancer risks were calculated for children and adults using the USEPA Regional Soil Screening Levels and benchmarks for specific land uses, such as crop growing. Soils from most sites had low or typical background levels expected in urban areas, but samples from several locations had significantly elevated lead levels (>1200 mg/kg) that warrant additional examination. Geospatial analysis suggested clustering of heavy metal contaminants within one geographic area of the neighborhood. This study highlights how participatory research in underserved environmental justice communities can help characterize current conditions as well as establish priorities for future investigation.
