As the scaling limit of silicon CMOS technology draws to an end, there is a critical need for novel materials and devices to drive the next generation of information processing. Graphene is one such promising candidate. Although graphene features exceptional intrinsic carrier mobility, thermal conductivity, and physical endurance, this two-dimensional material is quite sensitive to its environment as a result of its high surface-to-volume ratio. Variability effects become dominant and result in unreliable graphene devices. In order to realize high signal-to-noise ratio graphene devices for high-speed carbon-electronics, it is essential to investigate and minimize these variability effects. In this thesis, I present the preparation, design, and fabrication methods of single-layer and bilayer graphene sheet and graphene nanoribbon devices. Furthermore, I relate how these methods can contribute to the variability effects in graphene and graphene nanoribbons (GNR) devices while mentioning critical steps taken to minimize their influence. In order to understand how feasible graphene and GNR are for electronic devices, I investigate their device properties via electrical transport measurement and study their low-frequency (1/f) noise behaviors as a measure of how sensitive graphene and GNR are to their surroundings (e.g. surface traps near the graphene/SiO2 interface). Interestingly, graphene is shown to exhibit a noise behavior quite opposite to conventional semiconductor electronic materials – a noise minimum occurs when it is most resistive at its Dirac point. We also find that GNR devices show a direct correlation between the conductance fluctuations (noise) and the density-of-states of GNR. These results promote noise-metrology as a tool which can be used to probe the underlying band structure of quantum nanostructures.

We report an experimental investigation of the edge effect on the room-temperature transport in graphene nanoribbon and graphene sheet (both single-layer and bilayer). By measuring the resistance scaling behaviors at both low- and high-carrier densities, we show that the transport of single-layer nanoribbons lies in a strong localization regime, which can be attributed to an edge effect. We find that this edge effect can be weakened by enlarging the width, decreasing the carrier densities, or adding an extra layer. From graphene nanoribbon to graphene sheet, the data show a dimensional crossover of the transport regimes possibly due to the drastic change of the edge effect.
We present a graphene nanoribbon fabrication method based on a nanowire mask. Using a four-probe setup, single-layer nanoribbons (SLR) and bilayer nanoribbons (BLR) show low-frequency noise levels lower than (comparable to) the SLR (BLRs) achieved by hydrogen-silsesquioxane based methods. Submicron channel SLR and BLR both show conductance quantization at 77 K, which suggests that quasi-one-dimensional quantum transport can be achieved. The conductance plateaus in BLR are less pronounced than those in SLR.
Scattering mechanisms in graphene are critical to understanding the limits of signal-to-noise ratios of unsuspended graphene devices. Here we present the four-probe low-frequency noise (1/f) characteristics in back-gated single layer graphene (SLG) and bilayer graphene (BLG) samples. Contrary to the expected noise increase with the resistance, the noise for SLG decreases near the Dirac point, possibly due to the effects of the spatial charge inhomogeneity. For BLG, a similar noise reduction near the Dirac point is observed, but with a different gate dependence of its noise behavior. Some possible reasons for the different noise behavior between SLG and BLG are discussed.
Conductance fluctuation is usually unavoidable in graphene nanoribbons (GNR) due to the presence of disorder along its edges. By measuring the low-frequency noise in GNR devices, we find that the conductance fluctuation is strongly correlated with the density-of-states of GNR. In single-layer GNR, the gate-dependence of noise shows peaks whose positions quantitatively match the subband positions in the band structures of GNR. This correlation provides a robust mechanism to electrically probe the band structure of GNR, especially when the subband structures are smeared out in conductance measurement.

The thermoelectric properties of graphene and graphene nanostructures have recently attracted significant attention from the physics and engineering communities. In fundamental physics, the analysis of Seebeck and Nernst effects is very useful in elucidating some details of the electronic band structure of graphene that cannot be probed by conductance measurements alone, due in particular to the ambipolar nature of this gapless material. For applications in thermoelectric energy conversion, graphene has two major disadvantages. It is gapless, which leads to a small Seebeck coefficient due to the opposite contributions of electrons and holes, and it is an excellent thermal conductor. The thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of a two-dimensional (2D) graphene sheet is thus very limited. Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.
“My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”
From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony .
Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action .

PHES uses the gravitational energy of a reservoir of water located at a certain elevation. When an electrical demand is required, the water is sent to a lower reservoir, flowing through a turbine that produce electricity. Depending on the case, some communities could implement smaller PHES system for seasonal storage.
