Contemporary romance's unicorn: the elusive marriage of deeply brainy and delightfully escapist... The Love Hypothesis has wild commercial appeal but the quieter secret is that there is a specific audience, made up of all of the Olives in the world, who have deeply, ardently waited for this exact book.
Funny, sexy and smart.
This tackles one of my favorite tropes - Grumpy meets Sunshine - in a fun and utterly endearing way... I loved the nods towards fandom and romance novels, and I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended!
Pure slow-burning gold with lots of chemistry.
A beautifully written romantic comedy with a heroine you will instantly fall in love with, The Love Hypothesis is destined to earn a place on your keeper shelf.
When a book has a certain type of magic between the pages, you manage to get from the prologue to the epilogue without coming up for air ... The Love Hypothesis was one of these books.

Alrighty, here's part 2! Part 3 may or may not get completed today, but it'll definitely be done by tomorrow. Thank you so much for bearing with me while I go crazy and post chapter after chapter like a mad woman 😅😅😅
Her body sagged as she heard his words. It was fine, she tried to tell herself. It’s not like she’d wanted him to fuck her that much anyway. She nodded, “Okay. Thanks for telling me.”
She started to let go of his hand, but he held on and shook his head. He squeezed his eyes shut and pinched the bridge of his nose, then looked at her again, “I’m not saying this right. It’s not that I don’t want to fuck you. I…I do. But you’re not a one-night stand. I’m not just looking to get off and move on with my life. And this is certainly not nothing.”
The world slowly started to right itself. She wondered if she should say something, but he didn’t look like he was finished. Patience was the answer. She had a sense that saying any of this was a struggle for him, and she wasn’t about to cut him off and make him stop talking.
Still holding her hand, he began to walk again and slowly more words came, “I don’t do romance. I don’t do relationships. I don’t…I don’t really even know how.” He stopped again and looked down at her, “I know I’m not easy. I’m an asshole on a good day. On a bad day?” he shrugged, “You’ve probably heard stories.”
He wasn’t wrong about that. She’d never been sure which stories were true and which were lavishly embellished, but they all boiled down to one undeniable fact. Adam had a temper. “There may have been a rumor about some beakers ending the day in more pieces than they started the day in.” she tried to make her tone light and slightly teasing.
His eyes shut for a moment and swallowed hard, “I won’t lie and tell you there’s no truth to that particular story.”
When she didn’t say or ask anything, he opened his eyes and asked, “Do you want me to continue?”
She nodded, and they resumed their walk. He was quiet for a few minutes before going on, “I’m not good with people. I don’t like people. Holden says I’m a workaholic. My life consists of going to work, exercising, and sleeping. I can't promise that will change.”
He glanced down at her and she resisted the urge to say Tell me something I don’t know. Instead, she asked, “I’m people. Do you like me?”
“You’re tolerable, I suppose.” he teased.
“But not handsome enough to tempt you?” she teased right back.
He flushed a little, “You have no idea…” then shook his head, “That day in the bathroom? I felt like someone had hit me with a sledgehammer.”
She couldn’t stop the giggle and immediately apologized, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh. It’s just an amusing visual. Continue. Tell me more about this metaphorical sledgehammer.”
He rolled his eyes, but dove back into the story, “You were so…so…unexpected. Do you have any idea how bored I’d gotten? Every single moment of my day was the same. Nothing interesting had happened in forever.”
She resisted the urge to crack a joke, and kept her voice kind, “That had to suck.”
“It did. I think I was ready to give Industry a try just to get out of my rut.”
“You’re kidding.”
He shook his head, “I wish.”
She tried to picture Adam not being a teacher. “I think you would’ve mixed with Industry about as well as you’d mix with jail.”
The corners of his mouth twitched, “Smart-ass.”
She grinned, “So, there you were, unable to bear one more second of the monotony that was the exciting and super well-paid world of science academia. And then what happened?”
He actually smirked at her, “And then this smart-ass walked into my life trying to blind herself because she’d decided bacterial infections sounded more fun than functional eyes.”
“Oh yeah, that’s exactly why I hadn’t replaced my contacts.” she let the words drip with as much sarcasm as she could muster.
He gave a brief chuckle, “You were the first person to not act completely terrified of me in I don’t know how long. It caught me off-guard. To top it off, you were smart and driven. I…I liked talking to you. I may have…” He glanced away from her, looking sheepish, “I may or may not have asked Aysegul about you later that day.”
That surprised her, “You did?”
His cheeks had turned bright pink, “I wanted to know how likely it was you’d be given an offer.”
Suddenly she felt sick to her stomach and stopped walking, “Adam, tell me something.”
He stared at the ground, “What?”
“Did you tell her to make me an offer?”
Relief flooded his features as he met her eyes and shook his head, “No. God no. I would never do that. You got in on your own merit. I was careful, gave her no information beyond telling her I wanted to make sure I shouldn’t have called security because an impostor had somehow infiltrated the building.”
The sick feeling went away and she playfully shoved her shoulder into him, “I bet that was SUPER subtle.”
He shrugged, “You’d be surprised how subtle I can be.”
She laughed and something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye. “Give me a sec,” she told him as she dropped his hand and knelt down. A heart-shaped rock striped with brown and grey lay near her feet. She picked it up, dunked it in the water to clean it off, then held it for a few moments letting it air dry, admiring the small sparkly stripes interlayed between the colors, before slipping it into her sweatshirt’s pocket.
When she stepped back and reclaimed Adam’s hand, he looked at her with curiosity, “A rock?”
“Mm-hm.” She beamed up at him, “Go on, I like this story.”
“We’re not going to talk about the rock?”
She shook her head, “Nope. More story please.”
“Am I going to find you digging through those rock bins at tourist traps?”
She laughed, “Finish the story and maybe I’ll tell you.”
He let out an exaggerated sigh of mock exasperation, “Fine. When I found out they were planning to make you an offer, I decided that maybe I shouldn’t rush off and try Industry.”
Her eyebrows furrowed, “Adam, we only talked for like ten minutes.”
He held her gaze, “You made an impression. Enough of one that I was curious to see what would become of you if you accepted the offer.”
She started their walk again, “Okay, so I accepted the offer, and showed up at Stanford. You then proceeded to completely ignore me.”
He glanced down at her, “What? No, I didn’t.”
She gave him a very pointed look, “Adam, I’ve spent the better part of the last three years trying to figure out how to talk to you to thank you for that bathroom talk, and every time I thought I had a chance you wouldn’t even so much as look at me.”
He froze, “You…you have?”
She shrugged, “I just assumed that you had no memory of it. It made sense. Stanford is huge. Why would you remember me? Our chat hadn’t changed your life like it had mine.”
He released her hand and lifted both of his to tenderly cradle her face. Her breath caught at the feel of the gentle hold. She stared up at him trying not to pay attention to the butterflies inside that felt like they were on steroids. Leaning down he spoke deliberately, “Let me be very clear. It changed my life.”
She lifted her own hands and gently encircled his wrists, her voice sounded weirdly breathy to her own ears, “I wish you’d told me.”
He sighed and shut his eyes leaning his forehead against hers, “I wanted to every damn day and I never could.”
She shut her eyes, anticipating he was going to kiss her. Instead, his hands dropped, his forehead was gone, and he reclaimed her hand. She let out a shaky laugh, “This is you not knowing how to be romantic? God help us if you ever figure it out.”
“Smart-ass.” but he was smiling and everything felt right.
There was a larger rock, not far from where they were. Olive tugged at his hand, “C’mon, I think I need to sit for a few.”
It was just big enough for both of them to sit side by side. She leaned her head against his arm and watched the waves. His thumb rubbed little circles against her hand. It was a long while before he spoke again, “I’m sorry if I’m coming off like a creep.”
She turned to look at him, “What do you mean?”
His eyes dropped from hers and stared at the ground, “Pining after a girl for three fucking years and not saying a damn word sounds like the beginning of a Dateline episode.”
“Would it make you feel better if I pepper-sprayed you?”
He looked back up slightly startled, “Pepper spray?”
She patted the small crossbody purse, “Malcolm won’t let me leave home without it.”
“Good.” Adam nodded his approval, then added, “I’d prefer not to experience it if you don’t mind.”
She laughed, then bit her lip and batted her eyelashes at him, “You were pining after me?”
“Oh for fuck’s sake, that’s your takeaway from this?” He only looked mildly annoyed.
Words from one of her favorite movies popped into her head, and she began speaking them in a sing-song, “You think I’m gorgeous. You want to kiss me. You want to hug me. You want to lo…” her words suddenly stumbled as she slammed her mouth shut realizing what she had almost said.
Adam raised an eyebrow, amusement radiating off of him, “Oh don’t let me stop you, Gracie.”
She swallowed hard, “You know Miss Congeniality ?”
“Under duress, I assure you, and only because Holden was obsessed with it for far longer than was healthy. Being roommates with him was…educational.” His gaze softened, and his voice gentled, “And yes, I want to do all those things.”
Her heart was in her throat, “Adam, I…I need to tell you something.”

Book review, full book summary and synopsis for The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood, a delightful rom-com about a fake relationship between a biology Ph.D. student and a professor.
In The Love Hypothesis , Olive is a third-year biology Ph.D. candidate who shares a kiss with a handsome stranger in order make her friend think that she's in a relationship. She's horrified when she realizes the "stranger" is Dr. Adam Carlson, a prominent professor in her department who is known for being a hypercritical and moody tyrant.
She and Adam each have reasons for needing to be in a relationship, and they agree to pretend to date for the sake of appearances. Of course, as she gets to know Adam, it's only a matter of time before she starts feeling something for him, and it becomes clear that her little experiment in fake-dating just might combust...
(The Full Plot Summary is also available, below)
Three years prior, Olive Smith talks to a guy when she's in the bathroom fixing her contacts (and can't see) after her Ph.D. candidate interview. She tells him about her passion for her research. She doesn't catch his name but remembers the conversation distinctly and wonders about the guy she met.
In present day, Olive is a biology Ph.D. student researching early detection methods for pancreatic cancer. She kisses a guy randomly in order to trick her best friend into thinking she's dating someone (so that her best friend Anh won't feel bad about dating Olive's ex). That guy turns out to be Dr. Adam Carlson , a young, handsome and highly-respected tenured faculty member in her department. He's also known for being hypercritical and moody.
Meanwhile, Adam's department chair is worried that he's planning on leaving for another university and has frozen some of his research funds. So, Adam he agrees to pretend to be in a relationship with Olive in order to give the impression he's putting down "roots" here, in hopes they will unfreeze the funds.
As Olive and Adam fake-date, they get to know each other. Olive sees that Adam is demanding and blunt towards his students, but not unkind or mean. Olive confides in him about her mother getting pancreatic cancer, which is why she's doing her research.
Olive soon realizes that she has feelings for Adam, but she's afraid to tell him. When he overhears her talking about a crush, she pretends it's about someone else. Olive also hears someone else refer to a woman Adam's been pining after for years and is surprised at how jealous she feels.
In the meantime, Olive needs more lab space and has been talking to Dr. Tom Benton for a spot at his lab at Harvard. When Tom arrives in town, it turns out he's friends with Adam. Adam and Tom are friends from grad school, and they have recently gotten a large grant for some joint research that Adam is excited about. After Olive completes a report on her research for Tom, he offers her a spot in his lab for the next year.
Olive and Adam's relationship continues to progress until they attend a science conference in Boston. Olive's research has been selected for a panel presentation, while Adam is a keynote speaker. There, Olive is sexually harassed by Tom, who makes advances on her. When she rejects him, he accuses her of someone who sleeps around to get ahead. He also says that he'll deny it if she tells anyone and that they won't believe her.
While Olive does finally sleep with Adam at the conference, she soon tearfully breaks things off since she doesn't want to complicate things with Adam's joint research project with Tom. Adam is also in the process of applying for a spot at Harvard.
Olive is certain no one will believe her about Tom until she realizes that the accidentally recorded the conversation where he made advances and threatened her. Meanwhile, Olive's roommate Malcolm has started seeing Dr. Holden Rodriguez, a faculty member who is a childhood friend of Adam's. Olive and Malcolm turn to Holden for advice, who encourages them to tell Adam about the recording. He points out that he thinks the main reason that Adam is considering a move to Harvard is because Olive is supposed to be going there.
Olive finds Adam and shows him the video. He is incensed at Tom and reports it to their faculty. When Adam returns from Boston, he reports that Tom has been fired. Meanwhile, Olive has been reaching out to other cancer researchers for spots at other labs, and she's gotten promising responses. Olive tells Adam that she loves him and that she never liked anyone else. Adam admits that he remembered her from the day he met her in the bathroom and that she's the one he's been interested in for years.
Ten months later at the anniversary of their first kiss, Olive and Adam re-create the kiss to mark their anniversary.

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood came out a few months ago, and I didn’t really pay much attention to it. However, people seem to really be enjoying this book, and after reading The School for Good Mothers , I was really in mood for something light and fun.
In the Love Hypothesis, Olive is a third-year biology Ph.D. student at Stanford who ends up fake-dating a young and handsome tenured professor in her department. All the usual rom-com shenanigans ensue.
The Love Hypothesis is an unapologetically cheesy rom-com novel — with an upbeat attitude, meet cutes, fake-dating tropes, etc. — but it’s also a genuinely fun and often funny book. It hits a lot of familiar notes if you’re familiar with this genre, but somehow Ali Hazelwood has arranged them in a way that ends up being delightful and entertaining.
The book is super melodramatic at parts, uses so many tropes I couldn’t even list them all here if I was inclined to do so and is predictable in the way that rom-coms are always kind of predictable. That all said, I still had a fantastic time reading it and it flew by.
This is a short review because honestly it’s not that complicated to explain that this book is super cheesy and super fun.
If you like “chick lit” and rom-coms, you should definitely look into this book. I tend to be a little hypercritical of books in this genre, but I really enjoyed The Love Hypothesis . I found myself smiling and chuckling quite a bit as I read it.
This book is a straight-up cheesy rom-com — it is funny, melodramatic and fun as hell. I thought it was great.
See The Love Hypothesis on Amazon.
Narrated by : Callie Dalton Length : 11 hours 8 minutes
I listened to about half of this on audiobook. I think the audiobook is solid. The narrator is easy to listen to and does a good job with it.

As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships--but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees.
That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor--and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford's reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive's career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding...six-pack abs.
Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.
