About the author

Gordon d. nickel.

Very thankful to have been born and raised in Vancouver, I spent six great years of my later childhood with missionary parents and my three brothers in India. At university I studied English Literature and at seminary Hebrew Bible. Since beginning the study of Islam at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London in 1986, I have taught in Canada, USA, Pakistan, Malaysia, and India. I completed my PhD in Quranic Studies under Dr Andrew Rippin in 2004.

My most recent academic post was director of the Centre for Islamic Studies at SAIACS in Bangalore, India. Now I live with my wife Gwenyth in the midst of an area of clearwater lakes just west of the Monashee Mountains. Some weeks we seem to see more wild animals than people. I continue to write in the areas of the Quran and its classical commentaries, and the history of Christian-Muslim relations. My Christian commentary on the Quran was released in April 2020 by Zondervan/HarperCollins.

Starting with my India childhood years, I have had quite a bit of fun with languages, though I must acknowledge that I have a kind of brain glitch that lets me speak only one extra language at a time. Telugu as a child, French in high school and university, Urdu and Baluchi in Pakistan, German when our family got "stuck" in Nordrhein Westfalen for a year. For some reason the old brain works better with scripts: Telugu, biblical Greek and Hebrew, Urdu, classical Arabic.

The overall profile has been made, over the past 42 years, of three major fields of interest: First: A progressive involvement in academic research and teaching on issues pertaining to the formation of Muslim thought in classical times. Questions dealing with early Muslim dogma, creeds, theology and sects, were addressed. So were the issues related to Muslim law, scholarship, classical Literature, Qur'anic and Hadith Sciences. In the few recent years, more focus has been made on the formation of the Vulgate according to San'a Qur'anic manuscripts. This academic interest has shaped the profile in re-understanding contemporary issues challenging Muslim societies. Appropriation(s) of the past, approaches to Modernity, reformist thinking, Gender in Muslim contexts, and emerging religious minorities in Muslim societies, are but few matters that have been critically analysed to comprehend the underlying politics and strategies aiming at bringing change to contemporary Muslim societies.

Part of a broader conversation on scholarship in Islamic Studies that was sparked by a debate between Omid Safi and Aaron Hughes.

Islamic Studies Today: Essays in Honor of Andrew Rippin

Edited by Majid Daneshgar and Walid A. Saleh, this volume honours the contributions of Professor Andrew Rippin to the field of Islamic studies. It is a collection of essays on the Qur’an, qur’anic exegesis, the early history of Islam, the relationship of the qur’anic text to writings from other religious traditions, and the use of the Qur’an in modern discussions and debates. Its scope is medieval and modern contexts and it covers regions right across the Muslim world. The essays are based on and reflect Rippin’s broad interests and methodological innovations; his studies of text transmissions, hermeneutical studies of the Qur’ān; careful unpacking of the complex relations between qur’anic exegesis and historical contexts; and exploring potential new methodologies for future research.
