how to assign assignments in quill

Assigning A Unit Template

Featured activity packs page.

Teachers can assign a featured activity pack by navigating to the Featured Activity Packs page and selecting the activity pack they'd like to assign. From that page, they can choose to either

  • Assign to All Students, which will assign every student in each of their classes, or
  • Customize Students, which will allow them to select individual classes or students to assign the unit template to.

Recommendations

Each of the recommendations that are made when a student completes the diagnostic are unit templates. The Personalized Independent Practice Recommendations all point to unit templates comprised of Connect activities, while the Collaborative Class Lessons Recommendations are unit templates with Lessons activities. Teachers can assign these to individual students or the entire class by clicking on the Diagnostics tab under Student Reports and then on 'Recommendations' once an individual class' diagnostic assessment has been selected.

Using Quill in the Classroom – Guest Post

December 17, 2018 by Bethany Leave a Comment

Hello, and happy Monday! The great people at Quill contacted me last month about their product and I was intrigued to learn more about how it can help teachers make better use of face-to-face instructional time. Check out this guest post to learn more!

We all know that teaching writing can be very challenging.  We all know how important it is to write well . And , we all know that, with fast-moving curriculums, piles of grading work, and, often, limited access to resources, it can be difficult to give students the instruction they deserve.

Quill.org is a small, scrappy non-profit that produces free writing instruction software. We don’t want to replace teachers — we love and respect them. Many of our team members are former teachers themselves, and we know from personal experience that the most important moments in teaching come from face-to-face interaction with students. So, we decided to create a free tool that saves teachers countless hours that they would have spent creating and grading grammar worksheets ! Now, teachers can spend that time doing the valuable, in-person work.

So what exactly is Quill? Quill is a set of Diagnostic assessments, intelligently structured independent practice activities, and collaborative full-class lessons that focus on grammar and sentence construction skills. Through this tool, teachers can assign activities from any of our five tools – Quill Connect, Grammar, Proofreader, Lessons, and the Diagnostic. Most teachers start by assigning a Diagnostic, a short (22-25 questions) assessment that analyzes students’ baseline writing skills. Then, our software creates differentiated learning plans for each student based on their Diagnostic performance, so everybody gets the practice they need.

These learning plans have two different components: independent practice activities and collaborative class lessons. The independent practice activities, called Quill Connect activities, teach grammar mechanics and sentence construction skills through the research-backed method of sentence combining. The activities ask students to combine two or more short sentences into one complex sentence using a specific grammar target. With every attempt, students receive instant feedback that guides them toward the correct answer.

You might be saying to yourself, “differentiated practice is great, but how do I keep my class on the same page?” The Diagnostic also suggests collaborative, full-class activities from our Quill Lessons tool. Lessons are pre-constructed presentations (think a Powerpoint but with more features) on a particular writing-related topic. Lessons have both instructional slides and interactive learning prompts. When students submit their answers to these prompts, teachers can anonymously display student submissions to the whole class so that they can correct or confirm them. This way, everybody learns something new, and nobody feels called out!

Want additional practice? You also can create customized activity packs! When you customize your own packs, you can assign practice activities from any of our five tools, including Grammar and Proofreader. Quill Grammar activities teach basic grammar mechanics through fill-in-the-blank prompts, and Quill Proofreader asks students to identify and correct grammar errors in reading passages.

After students complete activities, Quill generates comprehensive grade reports. The reports provide an overall score for each activity, as well as an in-depth break down of the grammar concepts that students mastered or missed for every question in an activity.

While Quill aligns with the Common Core curriculum, teachers use our software in many different ways. One professor at Seneca College wrote us to tell us how she had used Quill to up student engagement and cut down on absenteeism. She explained how our Diagnostic tool had allowed her to get a sense of where students were with their writing ability upon entering her class, and then to track their progress. You can find her story, and others like it, here: https://www.quill.org/teacher-center/topic/teacher-stories .

Other teachers use activities as a do-nows to get their class in the writing mindset or as homework to reinforce what they covered in class. Many also use Quill Lessons to introduce grammar topics at the beginning of a new unit. Finally, teachers look to the Student Reports to inform their writing instruction going forward – they use our data to quickly figure out which topics to revisit or to cover next with their classes.

This year has been huge for Quill. As of November 2018, Quill has helped 1.3 million students in 5,000 schools internationally become strong writers! If you are interested in using Quill in your classroom, check out their Getting Started page!

What is Quill and How Can It Be Used for Teaching? Tips & Tricks

Quill is a digital tool designed to help students with reading, writing and comprehension

Quill

Quill was created as a free tool designed to be used in education and at home as a way to work on reading, writing, and comprehension skills.

You might think that being free this is lacking in some areas. But right from the premium website build quality to the layout that's clearly had a lot of thought put into it, this is a top tool when it comes to language building.

This nonprofit aims to help a wide variety of kids, from elementary thru middle and right up to high school. That means a selection of OER content right across the curriculum that can help students of varying ages and abilities.

As a result, Quill has been used by more than seven million students to write a massive two billion sentences. Here's all you need to know about Quill.

What is Quill?

Quill is a digital website-based tool that is designed to work alongside the curriculum to help improve student reading comprehension, writing, and language skills.

Quill

This is designed for use by students directly, via teachers, administrators, or guardians -- which can help tailor this to even younger students or those that might struggle working alone.

The tool focuses on grammar and writing in order to help students develop. This is done using a selection of area specific tools, all of which are tailored to Common Core skills and even offer differentiation for the likes of ELL, AP English, and pre-AP too.

Tech & Learning Newsletter

Crucially, this will all work in a way that can be tailored to the individual needs of each student. So you can work to specific targets to achieve results that are tangible and help in student progress through the year.

How does Quill work?

Quill is very simple to use, initially letting you select which user you are: Student, Teacher, Admin, or Guardian. You can then sign up with your details or use Google or Facebook for quick sign-in to get started right away. You are then able to select the grade ranges you will teach as well as the subjects required including English, Math, Science, History, and more.

Quill

You are able to create a class and add students, which is very easily integrated if your institution already uses Google Classroom. You can let students create their own accounts or make ones for them using their names. You then have the option to download a PDF with usernames and passwords listed for all the students, making access for them simple.

It is possible to assign activities to students or the class as a whole. Usefully, there is a diagnostic tool that can be used to assess student ability, so you know which projects will be a good fit for them to work on that are suited to their skills and needs.

Select lessons to get started with options such as Compound Objects and Predicates for grade 7 and above in which students learn to combine sentences by using compound objects and predicates.

The basic breakdown of tools is Diagnostics, Lessons, Connect, Grammar, and Proofreader. More on these in the next section.

Teachers and guardians then have a dashboard through which progress can be monitored and new work assigned as needed.

What are the best Quill features?

Quill has some very powerful tools that are tailored to ability, which allows students to progress at a rate that is challenging but without being off-putting.

Quill

Quill Diagnostic is a super helpful way to assess a student's skill level, which then helps them to be guided toward what it is that they should be doing to make improvements in the areas they need it.

The Quill Lessons are for larger groups, or the class as a whole. These offer writing prompts as well as discussion topics to allow for creative writing as a group or independently.

Quill Connect is a helpful tool that focuses on sentence writing. This aims to build sentence-writing skills to create a more complex end result in which the students know the building blocks used to get to that end result.

The Grammar tool is another helpful addition that offers more writing activities, only this time, as you may have guessed, with a grammar focus.

The new Reading for Evidence tool offers non-fiction texts with AI-powered writing prompts that use the text for evidence for students as they write out their work.

Finally, the Proofreader tool offers students certain passages of text with mistakes, which need to be spotted and fixed in order to progress.

How much does Quill cost?

Quill is primarily free to use although there is the option to go for a Premium upgrade to get more detailed reporting. For the free access you are required to sign-up using an email address, although students don't need to do this if you don't want that.

The Teacher Premium option, charged at $80 per teacher per year, can be tailored for free for 30 days before you decide if you could benefit from the extra features. These include more data reports including activity scores report, concepts report, standards report, and data export capabilities.

A School and District Premium option is available, at $1,800 per school per year, which gets you all the above plus monthly usage reports and an admin dashboard, plus Clever Secure sync, unlimited teacher licenses, priority technical support, and Quill Academy access.

Quill best tips and tricks

Start as a class Teach a lesson in the room so students can get to grips with how the platform works, before letting them progress individually or outside of school time.

Use the lights Student mastery is shown in red, orange, or green so teachers can assess at-a-glance using the dashboard, helping flag when students need help or perhaps could be challenged more.

Proofread Use the Quill Proofreader tool as a class to work through errors in the text and feedback what happened at each point so everyone can learn as a group.

Chicago Cubs sign veteran catcher Tomás Nido, designate Yan Gomes for assignment

June 19, 2024 / 1:25 PM CDT / AP

The Chicago Cubs signed veteran catcher Tomás Nido and designated Yan Gomes for assignment on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Nido was designated for assignment by the New York Mets last week. He was hitting .229 with three home runs and eight RBIs.

Nido was drafted by New York in 2012 and was the second longest-tenured player on the team behind Brandon Nimmo. The 30-year-old catcher, who remained with the organization after being designated for assignment last June, thanked the Mets with a heart emoji on the social media platform X.

Gomes, a 13-year veteran, is batting a career-low .154 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 34 games this season. Miguel Amaya has been getting most of the starts at catcher.

The 36-year-old Gomes spent 2 1/2 seasons in Chicago, batting .241 with 20 homers and 101 RBIs in 236 games. He was an All-Star with Cleveland in 2018 and played on a World Series champion with Washington in 2019.

The Cubs also placed right-hander Keegan Thompson on the paternity list and recalled righty Porter Hodge. Thompson is 1-1 with one save and a 4.30 ERA in 11 games.

Sentence-Level Writing Practice

Identify which sentence-level skills your students need to practice with a skills survey. Then, assign activities recommended for each student based on their responses so they can practice and improve their proficiency with those skills.

AP Writing Skills Survey

Students complete a 17 item survey to gauge their understanding of key writing skills that are essential to successful AP- and SAT-level writing. After students complete the survey, Quill will automatically recommend up to seven activity packs for each student based on their needs. Each pack contains a series of activities that each take about 15 minutes to complete and provide scaffolded, sequenced practice with one of the skills covered by the survey.

Complex Sentences; relative clauses; appositive phrases; participial phrases; parallel structure; compound-complex sentences; advanced combining

ELL Writing Skills Surveys

If you have ELLs in your courses, you may want to consider assigning them an ELL Skills Surveys before assigning them a writing skills survey.

ELL Starter Skills Survey

ELL students complete a 22 item survey to gauge their mastery of foundational English grammar. This survey is most appropriate for students who are in the Entering or Emerging WIDA levels . After students complete the survey, Quill will automatically recommend up to five activity packs for each student based on their needs. Each pack contains a series of activities that each take about 15 minutes to complete and provide scaffolded, sequenced practice with one of the skills covered by the survey.

Simple verb conjugation; articles; simple subject-verb agreement; simple word order; singular and plural nouns; adjective placement

ELL Intermediate Skills Survey

ELL students complete a 23 item survey to gauge their mastery of English grammar. This survey is most appropriate for students who are in the Emerging or Developing WIDA levels . After students complete the survey, Quill will automatically recommend up to six activity packs for each student based on their needs. Each pack contains a series of activities that each take about 15 minutes to complete and provide scaffolded, sequenced practice with one of the skills covered by the survey.

Subject-verb agreement; singular possessive nouns; possessive pronouns; prepositions; future tense; articles; intermediate questions

ELL Advanced Skills Survey

ELL students complete a 23 item survey to gauge their mastery of English grammar, specifically in areas that are challenging for non-native English speakers. This survey is most appropriate for students who are in the Developing or Expanding WIDA levels . After students complete the survey, Quill will automatically recommend up to five activity packs for each student based on their needs. Each pack contains a series of activities that each take about 15 minutes to complete and provide scaffolded, sequenced practice with one of the skills covered by the survey.

Regular and irregular past tense; progressive tenses; phrasal verbs; choosing between prepositions; responding to questions; commonly confused words

Personalized Recommendations

After students complete the AP Writing Skills Survey, you'll receive recommendations for each student based on their responses and tailored to their individual needs. Each student will be recommended up to 45 sentence combining activities, grouped by concept into seven packs, that provide meaningful, targeted practice. You can assign all the activities with one click, or you can pick and choose.

Writing with Targeted Feedback

Students receive immediate feedback that guides them through the revision process, pushing them to think critically about their writing and make revisions that ultimately lead to strong, sophisticated, and grammatically accurate sentences. The feedback inspires students to strengthen their sentence structure, but also supports them in editing for mechanics such as punctuation and spelling.

Data Reports

You can monitor the progress of your students and continue to identify areas of need and areas of strength through multiple data reports. Use the analysis report to review your students' work sentence-by-sentence, or use the summary report to get a high-level sense of where your students could use some extra support.

Quill and College Board have partnered to provide students with meaningful practice of their sentence-level writing skills.

Message from College Board

Teaching writing is hard. Even harder can be attempting to pinpoint exactly when we learned how and why to write clearly. That's why the College Board has worked with Quill.org to ensure that this new, free, comprehensive offering helps students practice targeted sentence construction skills in their writing. Sustained practice and exposure to targeted skills is important to improvement and comfort.

Teaching writing may always be hard, but student practice in meaningful skills can make the learning that much clearer. Through this practice, students can begin to own the how and why of their writing.

Questions and Answers

Quill is a writing tool that provides over 700 writing, grammar, and proofreading activities designed to engage students in the writing process. Quill provides practice in many areas of sentence writing, from comma placement and subject-verb agreement to the use of conjunctions to convey complex relationships between ideas. In the Quill Connect tool, students practice writing different types of sentences using the evidence-based strategy of sentence combining. Students receive specific, targeted feedback on their writing that they can use to revise their work. Through these activities, students practice writing a variety of sophisticated sentences and practice conveying complex ideas in clear, succinct, and grammatically strong ways. Most activities are designed to be completed in 10-15 minutes so that you have the freedom to use them in the way that works best for your classroom.

The AP Writing Skills Survey is a survey with 17 questions on a range of writing skills. The questions ask students to combine sentences, sometimes with a direction to use a specific strategy, and sometimes without any direction (other than to combine).

Students in any AP course can benefit from the practice recommended by Quill's AP Writing Skills Survey, but the practice is probably of greatest interest to teachers of AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition.

Quill's writing skills surveys can be used in lieu of Quill's general diagnostics. For example, an AP teacher would likely assign the AP Writing Skills Survey in lieu of the Advanced Diagnostic. Keep in mind, however, that teachers may want ELL students in AP courses to begin with one of the ELL Diagnostics instead of a writing skills survey. This article explains the differences between Quill's various diagnostics and surveys in more depth.

The Survey contains 17 questions and is designed to take about 30 minutes for students to complete.

After you have assigned the Survey and your students have completed it, Quill will show you how your students performed and provide recommendations of personalized practice activities you can digitally assign to students who need further skill development. This article explains how to find and assign those recommendations.

Depending on their performance, students will be recommended some or all of the following AP Writing Practice packs. The packs provide practice through Quill Connect , Quill's sentence combining tool . With the exception of the AP Writing - Advanced Sentence Combining pack , the activities in each pack are scaffolded to build in complexity. Here are descriptions of the packs:

AP Writing Practice - Complex Sentences

Students practice constructing complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions, such as even though, after, while, and because. Students also practice identifying time order, opposition, and cause/effect relationships.

AP Writing Practice - Relative Clauses

Students begin by using a provided relative pronoun, then progress to choosing between who, that, or which.

AP Writing Practice - Appositive Phrases

Students practice describing nouns using appositive phrases at the beginning, middle, and end of sentences.

AP Writing Practice - Participial Phrases

Students practice constructing sentences with -ing and -ed participial phrases at the beginning, middle, or end.

AP Writing Practice - Parallel Structure

Students practice constructing sentences in parallel structure with correlative conjunctions like either/or, neither/nor, and both/and, and with subordinating conjunctions like although, because, and when. Students also practice constructing sentences with parallel clauses.

AP Writing Practice - Compound-Complex Sentences

Students practice constructing compound sentences with and, or, but, and so. Students also practice constructing complex sentences with subordinating conjunctions such as even though, after, while, and because. Finally, students practice constructing compound-complex sentences with coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Students also practice identifying time order, opposition, and cause/effect relationships.

AP Writing Practice - Advanced Combining

Students apply their knowledge of multiple sentence structures to combine the sentences in the strongest way possible. Students practice constructing compound and complex sentences, using modifying phrases and clauses, and combining predicates.

Yes! From anywhere and at any time! Again though, please note that recommendations of the AP Writing Packs are generated after students complete the AP Writing Skills Survey. Please also note that students' performance on the AP Writing Practice packs will only be recorded if they are assigned to them by their teacher.

Each AP recommended pack* contains between 4 and 7 activities, each of which are designed to take between 10 and 15 minutes each.

*Please note that the activities in the AP Writing - Advanced Combining pack are different as they are all uncued, meaning the feedback does not direct students to combine in a particular way. These are great for students who are ready to apply the strategies covered in the survey without suggestions or direction.

The focus in most of these activities is to build the target skill of the pack (appositives, relative clauses, etc.), so the vocabulary and reading level are intentionally designed to be accessible by all students.

Teacher Tip: You can preview and play through any pack and its activities to get a sense of whether it's appropriate for your students.

Yes! In each recommended practice activity, Quill provides students with immediate feedback on their writing that they can use to revise their responses up to 5 times. Through these rounds of feedback and revision, students improve the clarity and precision of their writing.

Quill has a variety of reports to help you track your students' performance and progress. In the Activity Summary report , you can quickly see which activities your students have completed, along with color-coded icons indicating their proficiency with each activity. Quill has several other reports as well. This Cheat Sheet shows you which report to go to for particular information, and this video will walk you through interpreting and utilizing three of Quill's student data reports.

You can assign all the recommended packs in one click, or you can pick and choose, revisiting the recommendations report to assign more packs as needed.

As Quill was designed to be a supplementary tool with each activity taking approximately 10-15 minutes, students are ideally completing an activity at least 1-2 times per week (at most completing one activity per day). Since each AP recommended pack contains between 4 and 7 activities, teachers generally expect a recommended pack to be completed in 1-2 weeks. Of course, students may need more or less time depending on the amount of activities in the pack, their level of difficulty, and students' level of proficiency.

This article explains how you can use deadlines to help students pace themselves.

The activities in the AP Writing Practice packs are curated from existing Quill activities. While your students may encounter an activity they have already completed, the AP Writing Practice packs have been customized to target the skills students need to write successfully at the AP level. Given the quantity and variety of activities available on Quill, chances are that the AP Writing Practice packs will include plenty of new activities, even for students who have been using Quill for a while.

Yes! Quill offers 5 different tools with more than 700 writing, grammar, and proofreading activities designed to engage students in the writing process. This article will show you how to explore and assign Quill's featured activity packs, and this article will show you how to create a custom activity pack.

It is recommended that you and your students create free accounts on Quill.org. Creating an account will give you access to the Survey and its recommended practice. Creating an account also allows you to track your students' progress and view data reports. You can create an account by visiting the Quill sign-up page .

If you do not want to create an account, you or your students can complete the Survey here . However, please note that if you do not create an account, your students' performance on the Survey will not be saved or shared with you, and you will not have access to the recommended skills practice. You will also not be able to track student progress or view data reports.
