Basic information and contact details for Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio. With its roots dating back to 1826, it became the university it is today in 1967 following a merger between Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University.

The university serves over 11,000 students who are drawn from all 50 US states of America and 86 different countries.

CWRU is made up of eight schools. These are the school of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Applied Social Sciences, Dental Medicine, Medicine, Law, Management, plus a Graduate Studies school. Faculty members total around 3,300.

It offers nearly 95 undergraduate degree programmes, 135 graduate and professional courses, and close to 140 dual-degree programmes. In addition to this, the university has over 100 interdisciplinary academic and research centres and institutes that, between them, provide an extensive range of study.

The university campus comprises 185 acres of land in Cleveland’s University Circle – known as ‘Ohio’s most spectacular square mile’ – and a 389-acre farm in the picturesque suburb of Hunting Valley.

CWRU has a budget of over $1 billion and research revenues of around $360 million. As well as an endowment of approximately $1.7 billion, it draws funds of roughly $166 million from private sources in the form of gifts and pledges.

It is a member of the Association of American Universities and has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commision of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a university with very high research activity.

The CWRU alumni network is more than 100,000 strong and the University is associated with 16 Nobel laureates.

Students of CWRU are known as Spartans because, like their namesake warriors, they ‘value an education that engages mind and body’.

case western reserve university research ranking

In a  continuation of its 2025 rankings  of best graduate and professional schools,  U.S. News & World Report  placed Case Western Reserve University at No. 51 among all engineering schools. This marks a two-spot rise for Case School of Engineering, as  U.S. News  shifted its methodology to focus more on research and faculty productivity.

“Seeing our ranking improve as more emphasis was placed on the outstanding efforts of our faculty and researchers came as no surprise,” said Ragu Balakrishnan, the Charles H. Phipps Dean of the Case School of Engineering. “Though no external rankings can truly show the exceptional work happening across the Case School of Engineering, I am pleased to see this more quantitative approach reflecting our work.”

This change in methodology was in line with most of the  rankings that came out earlier this spring : emphasizing research and reducing focus on reputation, faculty resources and selectivity. Engineering and medicine’s rankings were delayed due to questions about source data; medicine rankings are expected to come out next month.

This year, the research metric (50% of the overall ranking) included total research expenditures (25%), average research expenditures per faculty member (15%) and a new measure: faculty research (10%), which uses bibliometric data from Scopus provided by Elsevier.

Other aspects of the overall ranking included peer assessment (12.5%), recruiter assessment (12.5%), doctoral degrees awarded (9%), doctorate-to-faculty ratio (6%), percentage of faculty in the National Academy of Engineering (5%) and acceptance rate (5%).

U.S. News & World Report  also provides specialty rankings, which are based solely on peer assessments by department heads in each area. Case School of Engineering saw a range of results across its programs—with impressive jumps, relatively stable returns and a few marked declines:

  • #21: Biomedical engineering (no change)
  • #32: Aerospace, aeronautical and astronautical engineering (down three)
  • #34: Materials engineering (up eight)
  • #42: Chemical engineering (down eight)
  • #44: Industrial, manufacturing and systems engineering (down three)
  • #45: Mechanical engineering (up one)
  • #50: Electrical, electronic and communications engineering (down five)
  • #51: Civil engineering (up nine)
  • #55: Computer engineering (down eight)

CWRU dips to 44th in U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings

Undergraduate research/creative projects takes 22nd; nursing jumps to 5th.

This year’s U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings saw Case Western Reserve slip two notches to 44 th among national universities, while also appearing at 22 nd for undergraduate research and creative projects.

As President Eric Kaler explained to Crain’s Cleveland Business last month, the best colleges for individual students depend on their own unique priorities for their undergraduate years.

“We just encourage people to look beyond them and be more thoughtful and deeper thinking about what’s right for [them],” he told the publication.

In terms of individual ranking criteria, this year’s rankings showed that nearly 60% of undergraduate classes have fewer than 20 students, while 14% have 50 or more. Also, the student-to-faculty ratio is 9-to-1, down from 11-to-1 for the previous several years.

The first-to-second year retention rate climbed from 93% to 94%, its highest figure in at least six years. Unfortunately, the overall graduation rate dipped 1 percentage point, to 84%, and the graduation rate for Pell Grant recipients slipped by 2, to 81%.

Case Western Reserve’s appearance at 22 nd for undergraduate research and creative projects—determined by nominations from presidents, provosts and other campus leaders—reflects the university’s longstanding commitment to engaging students in hands-on learning. More than 85% of undergraduates participate in research—often starting in their first year.

U.S. News also released rankings for several undergraduate programs that are based on ratings given by deans and other academic leaders within their schools. This year’s balloting found the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing’s program leaping five slots, to 5 th in the nation. Tying the school at that position were The Ohio State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Washington.

“This result is a testament to our exceptional faculty,” Dean Carol Musil said, “It also recognizes our extraordinary hospital partners, who welcome our incoming students to 1,300+ hours of clinical experiences, which start within their first month of undergraduate study. We are grateful to everyone involved in preparing our students to be such outstanding nurses.”

In other undergraduate rankings, biomedical engineering fell one spot, to 13 th , while the engineering school as a whole maintained its position at 45 th . Each of these systems utilizes a distinct methodology, taking into account a variety of factors such as faculty quality, student satisfaction, research output, graduation rates, and more. These individual criteria can lead to differences in rankings across different platforms. Yet, despite these variances, CWRU consistently ranks favorably, indicating its strong performance across multiple assessment metrics.

U.S. News & World Report

According to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2022-2023 National University rankings, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is placed at No. 44 among National Universities. The university is tied with Brandeis University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Northeastern University , and Tulane University.

U.S. News & World Report rankings are significant as they are based on a variety of measures that collectively provide a broad perspective of a university’s performance. This includes the quality of the institution’s faculty, the diversity of the student body, financial resources, alumni giving, and student outcomes such as graduation and retention rates.

CWRU’s high placement among national universities underscores its commitment to academic excellence and student success. Its robust academic programs, particularly in medicine, nursing, engineering, and business, contribute to its favorable standing.

The U.S. News & World Report also highlights program-specific rankings. The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at CWRU was recognized among the top 5 nursing schools in the country.

These rankings offer potential students insight into the quality of education and opportunities available at CWRU. The high marks emphasize the university’s commitment to rigorous academics, innovative research, and student support services, making it a competitive choice for those seeking a well-rounded, research-focused education.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings

THE World University Rankings are internationally recognized for their comprehensive and balanced performance assessments. They evaluate universities across multiple areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income, reputation, and output); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students, and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).

According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Case Western Reserve University is ranked 134th in the world for the year 2023. This places it in a strong position globally among higher education institutions. In terms of US College Rankings for the year 2022, it is ranked 51st, reflecting its competitive standing within the United States.

CWRU’s standing within THE’s global rankings highlights its commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The university’s rigorous academic programs, dedicated faculty, and robust research output play a crucial role in this ranking.

Of note is the university’s strong performance in research, a category which THE evaluates based on aspects like research reputation, research income, and research productivity. With an emphasis on innovative research and boasting partnerships with renowned institutions like the Cleveland Clinic, CWRU offers students exceptional opportunities for hands-on research experiences.

The international outlook is another critical aspect of THE’s ranking. CWRU’s diverse student body, partnerships with institutions around the globe, and commitment to international research collaborations contribute to a favorable score in this area.

While these rankings offer a snapshot of CWRU’s prestige and recognition, it’s crucial to remember that while rankings are significant, they do not capture every aspect of a university’s offerings. Prospective students should consider their individual academic and personal goals, the campus environment, student life, and other factors alongside these rankings. That said, Case Western Reserve University’s ranking speaks to its commitment to academic excellence, its dedication to research, and its success in preparing students for their future careers.

Why Do College Rankings Matter?

Why do college rankings matter? College rankings play a significant role in shaping the reputation of any educational institution, and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is no exception. They provide a measure of the university’s performance against other institutions at the national and global levels, influencing prospective students, faculty, and donors.

Firstly, for prospective students and their families, college rankings serve as a helpful tool when choosing an institution for higher education. Rankings offer insights into a university’s strengths and areas of excellence, enabling students to make informed decisions. For instance, Case Western Reserve University’s ranking in medicine, nursing, engineering, and business signal to students interested in these fields that they can expect a high-quality education.

Secondly, rankings matter to the faculty. High rankings can help attract top-tier professors and researchers, contributing to the intellectual capital of the university. They can also boost morale among current faculty, validating their hard work and dedication. A high ranking means that faculty can take pride in their association with the institution and its achievements.

Thirdly, rankings are important for the university’s relationships with donors and industry partners. High rankings can make a university more attractive to potential benefactors, leading to increased donations and funding for research . Moreover, these rankings can foster partnerships with industry leaders, providing students with more opportunities for internships, co-ops, and employment after graduation.

Moreover, rankings can influence the value of a degree from the university in the job market. Employers often consider the ranking of an applicant’s university when hiring. A degree from a high-ranking institution like CWRU can give graduates a competitive edge.

Lastly, for the university itself, high rankings are a point of pride and a marker of success. They validate the efforts of everyone involved in making the institution a leading center for learning, research, and innovation. The administration can use high rankings in their marketing efforts to attract new students and faculty and to secure additional funding.

However, while college rankings are important, they don’t capture every aspect of what makes a university great. Factors such as campus culture , student support services, community engagement, and individual department strengths may not be fully reflected in a ranking.

It’s important for prospective students to use rankings as just one of many tools in evaluating potential universities. Despite this, there’s no denying that Case Western Reserve University’s ranking reflects its commitment to providing a top-tier education and nurturing an environment conducive to academic and personal growth.

Employers often perceive graduates from high-ranking universities as well-rounded, competent, and prepared for professional challenges.

Moreover, the prestige associated with attending a highly-ranked university can enrich the college experience. Students might feel a sense of pride and accomplishment being part of an institution recognized for its excellence.

However, while rankings provide a useful overview of an institution’s academic standing, they should not be the sole determinant in the college decision process. Prospective students should also consider factors such as campus culture, availability of student services, financial aspects, location, and whether the university’s overall ethos aligns with their personal and academic goals.

Case Western Reserve University’s ranking serves as a significant benefit to college applicants by providing an assurance of quality, a potential for excellent career prospects, and a proud association with a respected institution.
