Resume layout

Add the following sections when you write your resume .

  • Name and contact details – Add to the very top of your resume to introduce yourself and make it super-easy for recruiters to get in touch.
  • Resume summary – Reel hiring managers in with an “elevator pitch” style paragraph which sums up your suitability for the job.
  • Skills section – A short and sharp list of your most important skills, that can be quickly skim-read.
  • Work experience – List your previous jobs (from newest to oldest) detailing the skills learnt and applied in each.
  • Education – List your qualifications and professional training.
  • Additional info – If it helps your application, you can add an extra section for things like hobbies and interests.

Here’s what to include in each part of your resume.

Contact Details

Contact details

Add your name and contact details to the very top of your resume, making it easy for recruiters to get in touch

  • Name and profession title
  • Cell phone number – or another number you can answer quickly
  • Location – Add your local area such as San Diego or New York – not your full address as that will take up too much space.

resume profile

  • Keep it short: Your summary is intended to be a high-level introduction to hook readers’ attention, so keep it brief (4-7 lines) – save the details for later in your resume.
  • Tailor to target jobs: Recruiters will be scanning for the skills and knowledge they mentioned in the job description, so add as many as you can to your summary.
  • Avoid using cliches: You might be a “ highly motivated go-getter who thinks outside the box” but generic meaningless cliches like that don’t tell employers much about you – stick to factual information in your summary.

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Professional development means to have the essential training certification or education with the purpose of earning and having a successful career. Every job requires a different set of skills. The most important part of any resume for a high school science teacher is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of high school science teachers" and "Managed a team of 6 high school science teachers over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

Recruiter Insight: Why this resume works in 2022

Tips to help you write your high school teacher resume in 2024,    highlight your teaching methodologies.

   Show your adaptability to technology

Nowadays, the use of technology in classrooms is inevitable. Therefore, you need to show your adaptability to different educational technologies. Include any experience with virtual classrooms, learning management systems, or any other relevant educational tech.

As the name suggests, this teacher teaches in high school to students who are generally aged between 14 and 18 years old. In other countries, you might be called a secondary school teacher. High school teachers specialize in teaching specific subjects so you will be expected to have a bachelor’s degree in education and a specialization in the subjects you teach. Recruiters will also be looking to see years of experience as a high school teacher. Here is a successful resume sample.

   Highlight your teaching philosophy

Your teaching philosophy is a critical component of your resume. It gives potential employers insight into your approach to education and how you engage with students. When crafting your teaching philosophy statement, consider the following:

  • I believe in creating a student-centered learning environment that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • My teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners.
  • I am committed to using technology to enhance student learning and prepare them for success in the 21st century.

  • Implemented a new project-based learning curriculum that increased student engagement by 25%.
  • Developed and taught a successful AP Biology course, with 90% of students earning a score of 3 or higher on the AP exam.

  • Professional development workshops or conferences you've attended
  • Any publications, research, or presentations in your field
Example: M.A. in English Literature from XYZ University. Presented research on innovative teaching strategies for Shakespeare at the National Council of Teachers of English conference.

   Include extracurricular involvement

Many high school teachers are involved in extracurricular activities, such as coaching sports teams, advising clubs, or directing school plays. When including extracurricular involvement on your resume, be sure to:

  • Coached the varsity soccer team to a regional championship and a 20% increase in student participation.
  • Advised the student government, facilitating the organization of school-wide events and community service projects.
  • Directed the school musical, overseeing a cast and crew of 50 students and managing a budget of $5,000.

Tailor your resume to the school

Just like you would tailor your lessons to the needs of your students, you should tailor your resume to the specific school and position you're applying for. Research the school's mission, values, and educational philosophy, and highlight how your experience and skills align with them. For example:

  • Generic statement: Experienced high school teacher seeking a new opportunity.
  • Tailored statement: High school teacher with 5 years of experience in project-based learning, seeking to contribute to XYZ High School's mission of preparing students for success in college and beyond.

By customizing your resume for each application, you demonstrate your genuine interest in the school and your potential to be a valuable addition to their faculty.

By showcasing your technology skills, you demonstrate your ability to adapt to the changing landscape of education and prepare students for success in the digital world.

Writing Your High School Teacher Resume: Section By Section

  summary.

A resume summary is an optional section that can be a powerful tool for high school teachers. It's a brief paragraph at the top of your resume that highlights your most relevant qualifications and experiences. While a summary isn't required, it can be especially useful if you're changing careers or have a lot of experience to condense.

On the other hand, an objective statement is an outdated resume feature that should be avoided. Objectives focus on what you want from a job, rather than what you can offer an employer. Instead, use a summary to showcase your value and teaching skills.

How to write a resume summary if you are applying for a High School Teacher resume

To learn how to write an effective resume summary for your High School Teacher resume, or figure out if you need one, please read High School Teacher Resume Summary Examples , or High School Teacher Resume Objective Examples .

1. Tailor your summary to the teaching job

When writing your summary, make sure to customize it to the specific teaching position you're applying for. Read the job description carefully and identify the key skills and qualifications the school is looking for in a high school teacher.

For example, if the job emphasizes classroom management and curriculum development, highlight your experiences in those areas:

High school English teacher with 5+ years of experience creating engaging lesson plans and managing classrooms of 25-30 students. Skilled in developing rigorous curriculum aligned with state standards and using formative assessments to track student progress.

Avoid generic summaries that could apply to any teaching job, like:

Passionate teacher dedicated to helping students learn and grow. Strong communication and organizational skills.

2. Showcase your teaching skills and accomplishments

Your summary is the perfect place to highlight your top teaching skills, accomplishments, and areas of expertise. Instead of just listing soft skills like 'communication' or 'leadership', provide concrete examples that illustrate those abilities in action.

Effective summaries for high school teachers often mention:

  • Subject areas and grade levels taught
  • Curriculum development and lesson planning
  • Classroom management strategies
  • Student achievement or growth metrics
  • Relevant certifications or training

For example:

Creative and organized high school science teacher with 7 years of experience developing hands-on labs and interactive lessons. Increased student engagement and raised test scores by 15% through innovative teaching strategies. Certified in Project-Based Learning.

  Experience

Your work experience section is the most crucial part of your high school teacher resume. It's where you highlight your teaching skills, classroom management abilities, and the impact you've made on your students. Use this section to showcase your most relevant and impressive experiences, and make sure to include specific examples and metrics whenever possible.

1. Use strong action verbs

When describing your work experience, use powerful action verbs that showcase your teaching skills and accomplishments. Avoid generic phrases like 'responsible for' or 'worked on.' Instead, use verbs that highlight your impact, such as:

  • Developed and implemented engaging lesson plans that increased student participation by 30%
  • Collaborated with colleagues to create a new curriculum that improved student test scores by 15%
  • Mentored struggling students, resulting in a 25% improvement in their grades

By using strong action verbs, you demonstrate your proactive approach to teaching and your ability to drive positive results.

Action Verbs for High School Teacher

2. Highlight relevant teaching experience

When listing your work experience, focus on the positions that are most relevant to the high school teacher role you're applying for. This may include:

  • Previous high school teaching positions
  • Tutoring or mentoring experience
  • Student teaching or internships
  • Relevant volunteer work, such as working with youth organizations

If you have limited teaching experience, emphasize transferable skills from other jobs, such as leadership, communication, or problem-solving.

High School English Teacher, ABC High School, 2018-2020 - Taught English classes - Graded papers and assignments - Attended faculty meetings

Instead, focus on specific accomplishments and the impact you made:

High School English Teacher, ABC High School, 2018-2020 - Developed and taught engaging lessons on literature, writing, and grammar to classes of 25-30 students - Implemented differentiated instruction techniques, resulting in a 20% improvement in student writing scores - Collaborated with colleagues to develop a new English curriculum aligned with state standards

3. Quantify your achievements

Whenever possible, use numbers and metrics to quantify your achievements and demonstrate your impact. This helps hiring managers understand the scope and significance of your contributions. For example:

  • Increased student engagement by 40% through the implementation of interactive learning activities
  • Developed and led an after-school tutoring program that helped 50+ students improve their grades and test scores
  • Created and maintained a classroom website that received 500+ unique visitors per month

If you don't have access to specific metrics, you can still use numbers to provide context, such as the number of students you taught, the number of lessons you developed, or the frequency of certain tasks.

4. Show career progression

Hiring managers want to see that you've grown and developed throughout your career. If you've held multiple teaching positions, highlight your progression and increasing responsibilities. For example:

High School Math Teacher, XYZ High School, 2015-2018 - Taught Algebra and Geometry to classes of 20-25 students - Developed and implemented a new Algebra curriculum that increased student test scores by 15% - Mentored two student teachers, providing guidance and feedback on lesson planning and classroom management Department Chair, Math Department, XYZ High School, 2018-2020 - Led a team of 10 math teachers in developing and implementing a new department-wide curriculum - Conducted regular observations and provided feedback to improve teaching practices - Collaborated with school administration to set department goals and allocate resources

By showcasing your career progression, you demonstrate your ability to take on increasing responsibility and leadership roles.

  Education

The education section is a key part of your high school teacher resume. It shows hiring managers that you have the right training and knowledge for the job. Let's look at how to write a strong education section on your resume.

How To Write An Education Section - High School Teacher Roles

1. Put your highest degree first

Start your education section with your highest degree, like a master's or bachelor's in education. List the degree, school name, and graduation year.

Master of Education, ABC University, 2020 Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, XYZ College, 2018

If you have a teaching license or certification, include that too. Keep this section short and relevant.

2. Highlight teaching coursework

If you're a recent graduate or early in your teaching career, you can include relevant coursework on your resume. List classes that prepared you to be a high school teacher.

Good examples:

  • Adolescent Psychology
  • Curriculum Development
  • Classroom Management

Avoid listing general education classes that aren't directly related to teaching.

3. Keep it concise if you're experienced

If you're a veteran teacher, your education section can be brief. Hiring managers will be more interested in your work history. Just list your degrees without extra details.

Example for a senior teacher:

M.Ed., State University B.A. English, Private College

Compare that to a less effective example:

Master of Education, State University, 1992 Bachelor of Arts in English, Private College, 1988 Courses: Creative Writing, British Literature, Poetry

The second example gives unnecessary info that ages the candidate. Keep it simple.

  Skills

The skills section of your high school teacher resume is where you showcase your teaching abilities, classroom management techniques, and subject expertise. It's a critical section that hiring managers and applicant tracking systems (ATS) scan to determine if you have the qualifications they're looking for. Here are some tips to help you craft a compelling skills section:

How To Write Your Skills Section - High School Teacher Roles

1. Highlight relevant teaching skills

When listing your skills, focus on those that are most relevant to the high school teaching position you're applying for. Consider the subject(s) you'll be teaching and the grade level.

Some examples of relevant teaching skills include:

  • Curriculum development
  • Lesson planning
  • Classroom management
  • Student assessment
  • Differentiated instruction

Avoid listing generic or irrelevant skills that don't directly relate to teaching high school students. For instance, instead of simply stating 'communication skills', be more specific with something like 'effective communication with students and parents'.

To ensure you're including the most relevant skills, carefully review the job description and mirror the language and keywords used. Tools like Resume Worded's Targeted Resume can help you optimize your skills section by checking if you have the right keywords compared to the job description.

2. Showcase your subject expertise

As a high school teacher, you'll likely be teaching specific subjects. Make sure to highlight your expertise in those areas within your skills section. This shows hiring managers that you have the knowledge and qualifications to effectively teach the subject matter.

For example, if you're applying for a position as a high school science teacher, your skills section might look like this:

Science : Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science Lab Skills : Lab safety, Experiment design, Data analysis Instructional Strategies : Inquiry-based learning, Project-based learning, Differentiated instruction

Grouping your skills into categories like this makes it easy for hiring managers to quickly see your relevant expertise.

If you have any special certifications or training related to your teaching subject, consider including those in your skills section as well. This can further demonstrate your qualifications and help you stand out from other candidates.

3. Optimize for applicant tracking systems

Many schools use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to filter resumes based on keywords. To ensure your resume makes it past these filters, include relevant keywords from the job description in your skills section.

For instance, if the job description mentions 'classroom management' as a required skill, make sure to include that exact phrase in your skills section. However, avoid simply listing keywords without context. Instead, provide specific examples or details to back up your skills.

Here's an example of what not to do:

Classroom management Lesson planning Assessment

Instead, try something like this:

Classroom management: Implemented positive behavior support strategies resulting in a 20% reduction in disciplinary issues Lesson planning: Developed engaging, standards-aligned lessons incorporating technology and hands-on learning Assessment: Created and administered formative and summative assessments to track student progress and inform instruction

After crafting your skills section, consider using a tool like Resume Worded's Score My Resume to get instant feedback on how well your resume, including your skills section, aligns with what hiring managers are looking for. It can help ensure you're putting your best foot forward in your job search.

4. Tailor your skills to the school and position

Different schools and teaching positions may prioritize different skills. To make your resume stand out, tailor your skills section to the specific school and position you're applying for.

For example, if you're applying to teach at a school known for its innovative use of technology in the classroom, highlight your skills related to educational technology:

Educational Technology : Google Classroom, Smartboards, iPads, Kahoot, Nearpod

On the other hand, if the school emphasizes project-based learning, showcase your experience with that instructional approach:

Instructional Strategies : Project-based learning, Inquiry-based learning, Collaborative learning

By tailoring your skills section to the specific school and position, you demonstrate that you're a strong fit for their unique needs and priorities.

As you tailor your skills section, be careful not to simply copy and paste from the job description. Use the keywords and phrases as a guide, but put them in your own words and provide specific examples to back them up. This shows that you truly possess those skills, rather than just parroting back the job requirements.

How this Colorado science teacher helps students become environmental changemakers

Yajaira Fuentes-Tauber majored in biology at college and planned to go to medical school. But a stop-gap job teaching science in Texas changed the course of her career.

“I realized that while I liked medicine, I loved teaching,” she said.

Today, Fuentes-Tauber teaches biology at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, and is passionate about increasing access to STEM education and empowering students to become change agents.

A portrait of a woman with dark hair and glasses.

Her students have published books about river otters and created “bee hotels” out of reclaimed wood.

Fuentes-Tauber was named 2023 Earth Science Teacher of the Year by the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists Foundation and was also one of three Colorado science teachers named state finalists in the 2022-23 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Fuentes-Tauber talked to Chalkbeat about her initial misconceptions about teaching, how her students are improving watershed health, and what she does to make ocean health relevant to students in a land-locked state.

This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Was there a moment when you decided to become a teacher?

I graduated from college early and needed something to do while my husband, who had served in the Coast Guard, finished his bachelor’s degree.

My first job was at Rivera High School in Brownsville, Texas, an area with high levels of poverty and teacher shortages. With a week before students were back in the classroom, the principal had to take a leap of faith in offering me a full-time science teaching position, which included a concurrent alternative teaching certification program.

I planned to pursue a medical degree, but after teaching for one semester, I decided to change careers and pursue a master’s degree in science education and then a doctorate of education.

How did your own experience in school influence your approach to teaching?

As a Hispanic, Latina, English learner, and first in my family to graduate from high school, I didn’t truly experience representation in the classroom. Many teachers didn’t look like me or have the same socioeconomic status or immigration background as I did. A number of teachers in our district were part of Teach for America and they were not representative of our school ethnic groups, nor did they speak Spanish.

The factors that shape my identity have been key in bringing a different perspective to my own teaching practices. I am passionate about advancing access to STEM education because I believe that through equity, diversity, and inclusion, students can pursue their interests regardless of their identity. Much like our school motto I believe that the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.

Tell us about a favorite lesson to teach. Where did the idea come from?

One of my favorite lessons is where students explore the impact of environmental changes through the lens of ocean acidification.

Students use different color beads to represent chemicals involved in the process that causes oceans to become acidic. The activity incorporates the chemistry behind ocean acidification to help students see how this process reduces the chemical compound needed to form shells and skeletons.

Ocean acidification and sea levels is something that I had background on, having taught for eight out of 17 years in South Texas, but to my current students exploring these topics when they live in a landlocked state felt irrelevant. I wanted to raise awareness about the interconnectedness of our ecosystems. As future leaders, they need to understand how our actions impact others miles away and how changes occurring miles away have the potential to impact our community.

With the loss of coral reefs, which provide coastal protection during storms, ecotourism, and habitat for diverse species, people may migrate to inland communities. This can impact the housing market, jobs, greenhouse emissions, and the transmission rates of communicable diseases. As future voters, they are most struck by considering how a shift in population could impact the electoral college, as the number of votes is dependent on a state’s population.

What is the Caring for Our Watershed contest?

Caring for Our Watershed is an international program that empowers students to take action to improve the health of their local watershed. One of the regional contests takes place in Northern Colorado, where a panel of judges selects proposals for funding by organization’s sponsors

Our students focus on The Big Thompson and the Cache la Poudre River Watershed in developing their proposals. Most recently, we had a team that wrote and illustrated a book about river otters that was printed and read at local elementary schools.

Another project selected for funding included a student making “bee hotels” using reclaimed wood to increase habitats for bees as they are crucial in maintaining a healthy watershed.

I love that this program allows students to become agents of change while still in high school. Over seven years, students have received over $13,000 in awards and we’ve received matching funds.

Tell us about a memorable time — good or bad — when contact with a student’s family changed your perspective or approach.

It has been bittersweet to learn about issues impacting students and their families in ways that are not visible or even recorded by schools. On the one hand, it is amazing that they see me as a trusted adult, and on the other hand, I’m struck by the weight of their burdens.

Learning about issues such as immigration status and languages spoken at home has prompted me to take a more inclusive approach to teaching. I integrate opportunities for “windows and mirrors” to ensure that I create a supportive environment where all students feel valued.

For example, when students explore the expansion of businesses in undeveloped areas with native species, they take into consideration the many perspectives that stakeholders bring to the table. Some may see themselves in the “mirror” if they have family members who work in construction, while providing a “window” for students who do not share the same perspective.

What was the biggest misconception that you initially brought to teaching?

When I intended to go to medical school, teaching was initially seen as a brief detour to fill a time gap in my plans. In our community, becoming a teacher was often perceived as an easy career path, in which you have an 8-hour-a-day job with paid holidays and paid summers off.

Once in the classroom, I quickly realized that teaching is far from an easy task and our commitment goes beyond contract times, not to mention summers are not really paid time off. Yet despite this initial misconception, I loved the challenge. I loved being part of the students’ journey to self-discovery and educational empowerment. My immediate family has always valued education and they were supportive.

What are you reading for enjoyment?

The last book I read for a parent book club was “ The Bright Side of Going Dark ” by Kelly Harms, and I’m waiting to get the next book for our club: “ The Survivor’s Guide to Family Happiness ” by Maddie Dawson. I’m also waiting for “ Understanding Imperiled Earth ” by Todd J. Braje.

Hamline awarded $375K grant to enroll St. Paul science teachers in leadership degree program

Written by Staff

April 26, 2024

Hamline University was recently awarded a $375,978 Noyce Track 3 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program . Named after influential physicist and entrepreneur Robert Noyce, the program was established to address the critical need for recruiting, preparing and retaining highly effective mathematics and science teachers and teacher leaders in high-need school districts.

These funds will cover the tuition for 18 secondary science teachers from Saint Paul Public Schools to pursue an educational specialist degree in leadership for equitable innovation and transformation from Hamline University’s School of Education and Leadership . Through Hamline’s edS program, these teachers will be empowered to become science education leaders within their buildings and the district.

“This program is for educators who already have their master’s degree and want to become science teacher leaders in their schools, district, and state,” said Sarah Hick , HSEL professor and Hamline’s principal investigator for the grant. “They want to develop their leadership skills for great teaching, mentoring, and professional development.”

The grant will cover Hamline tuition for the degree sequence at a pace of about 1 course per semester over the five-year grant period. This group of grade 6-12 teachers will progress through the program as a cohort, so many courses will be tailored to their specific experience as secondary science teachers to best meet their needs and goals.

Hick, a former SPPS science teacher herself, applied for the grant knowing both the challenges local teachers face in the classroom and what a difference this opportunity could make for teachers and their students.

“I had so much fun and saw great learning happening in my classroom teaching biology at Saint Paul Central High School, so I know how robust the learning can be and how fun and engaging the teaching can be,” “Hick said. “I just want to do everything I can to help teachers these days, many of whom are beleaguered by large class sizes and struggles related to technology and other disruptions in the classroom. I want to help them get excited about their jobs, which helps students get excited about learning in their classroom.”

The cohort of 18 SPPS science teachers will begin their postgraduate education at Hamline in August 2024.

The funds for this cohort are part of a larger $2.9 million grant between Hamline University, University of Minnesota , Saint Paul Public School and the non-profit science curriculum organization Biological Sciences Curriculum Study . Grant money allocated to these partners will in part cover stipends for the fellows, professional development, observations and other support.

High schoolers get taste of science at college level

  • April 23, 2024

people sitting in a classroom

Many programs and departments at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa organize tours and site visits for elementary and secondary students to welcome and wow them about what their hometown flagship campus has to offer. The Department of Information and Computer Sciences ( ICS ) has increased its efforts to showcase its STEM opportunities to Hawaiʻi keiki, with a particular focus on those who may not otherwise have access to higher education.

people sitting in a classroom

In April, ICS students and faculty welcomed haumāna (students) from Farrington High School’s computer science club to the Mānoa campus. Farrington is a Title I school meaning that the campus provides additional academic support and learning opportunities for their students due to its high percentage of socioeconomically disadvantaged children. Organizers of the visit said many of the students are first generation, and they wanted to show them that college is an option for everyone.

“At most field trips I have had at UH , I have had students who decide to major in computer science,” said Farrington High School club advisor Joshua Dimaya. “Some students, who had chosen not to go into college education, now are excited and motivated to go to school and start to work with our college counselor to apply for schools. Having presentations on TIDES and other support systems at UH Mānoa also helps our students know that there are places to help them financially and emotionally when going to school, easing their decisions to go to UH Mānoa.”

During the visit, the Farrington students met with Game Dev, an ICS student organization for gaming and game development. They also got a chance to visit Campus Center, Warrior Recreation Center, IT Center and the Office of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity ( SEED ).

Jaira Pader, a computer science student and Farrington alumna, joined the tour as one of the leaders. Dimaya was Pader’s computer science teacher during her senior year.

“His class, by far, made a huge impact on my decision to major in computer science after learning about the potential careers I could get into and because of his passionate teaching,” Pader said. “Although I couldn’t get the same experience because of post-COVID regulations, I’m happy that he shows his students the opportunities they could have at Mānoa as computer scientists. It was great talking to a former teacher of mine and seeing the fascination these high schoolers have on the field.”

Over the past several months, ICS also welcomed Liholiho Elementary , ʻAiea High, Hanalani Schools and Maryknoll School.

The ICS advising team, led by Kenny Kaʻaiakamanu -Quibilan and Marilou Matsuura, welcomes school teachers and staff with an interest in taking their students on a tour of ICS to contact: [email protected] .

“On behalf of the ICS advising team, we are excited to have hosted several Hawaiʻi K–12 schools on campus!” Kaʻaiakamanu -Quibilan said. “It is our mission to inspire local talent and recruit underrepresented populations into the ICS field. More importantly, we hope these outreach events show students that college is possible and that there are people here to support them in their educational endeavors. We also want to say a mahalo nui loa to our campus student services like Warrior Recreation Center, SEED , TRIO Mānoa, TIDES and iLab for collaborating with us.”

The Department of Information and Computer Sciences is housed in UH Mānoa’s College of Natural Sciences .

Teacher fired after threatening to bring rifle to school trying to get job back

A Massachusetts teacher is appealing his firing after officials say he threatened to bring his rifle to schoo l.

A judge Wednesday reduced the charge against Kenneth Decie, 54, of Quincy, a former Hanover teacher . The threat was made in response to disciplinary action taken against him by the school's principal, according to police reports.

Decie was originally charged under a law dealing with "terroristic threats." Because Hingham District Court doesn't have jurisdiction over a charge of that magnitude, the state would have had to indict Decie and transfer the case to Superior Court.

Instead, Assistant District Attorney Jason Blanchette requested an lesser charge of threatening to commit a crime. Decie's defense lawyer Eric S. Goldman agreed to the change.

Police say that Decie made the threat in response to disciplinary action taken against him by the school's principal, Matthew Mattos.

Decie made the threat in September while discussing the disciplinary matter with Steve Henderson, a fellow teacher and president of the Hanover Teachers Association, in a common room for staff. Another teacher heard threat and became concerned, according to the police report.

"Obviously, he regrets what he said," Goldman said after the court hearing. "It was not meant as a threat in anyway."

When Mattos learned of the incident, he brought it to the attention of Superintendent Matthew Ferron, at which point a decision was made to put Decie on administrative leave. Blanchette said that Ferron eventually fired Decie.

Blanchette requested and was granted a stay-away order barring Decie from contacting Ferron, Mattos and the witness who overheard his alleged threat. Decie was also ordered to stay away from Hanover schools.

While answering reporters' questions after the hearing, Goldman said that Decie is appealing his termination. Prior to the threat, the school administration was investigating Decie's absences from afterschool activities, absences Goldman said were due to a COVID illness.

Goldman said that Decie was a committed teacher at Hanover High School for 17 years. The administration knew about Decie's illness when it investigated his afterschool absences, a fact that upset Decie, Goldman said.

Decie was released without bail. His next court date was scheduled for June 5.

Teacher shortages see some Ontario high school students awarded perfect grades on midterm exams

Students at a high school in York Region have been awarded perfect marks on their midterm exams in three subjects – not because of their academic performances however, but because they had no teacher.

On Tuesday, York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) confirmed with CTV News that it had given pupils at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School in Aurora, Ont. perfect marks on exams in two biology classes and one business class.

"These classes have not had a permanent teacher for much of the semester due to a shortage of teachers specializing in the subject area, a spokesperson for the board told CTV News Toronto on Tuesday.

"This situation is rare at the Grade 12 level," the spokesperson said, adding that the board is "confident" it will find replacement teachers soon.

The move comes as schools across Ontario continue to grapple with staffing levels. In its 2023-2024 Annual Ontario School Survey, People for Education found that 24 per cent of elementary schools and 35 per cent of secondary schools report facing teaching staff shortages each day.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Education Minister Stephen Lecce called the situation “unacceptable.”

“Kids need to work hard in order to be assessed on their achievement,” Lecce said before calling on the Ontario Teachers’ Federation to allow retired teachers to fill absences, short-term.

“We are calling for retired educators — who have decades of experience — to be leveraged to fill those exact circumstances so qualified teachers could be in the classroom and restore some stability for those kids,” the minister continued.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles said York Region’s Catholic school board's decision serves as an example of the “appalling state of education in this province after six years of Doug Ford’s government.”

“This isn’t about the teachers’ unions or the Ontario Teacher Federation. The Premier and the minister need to need to take some responsibility here and be accountable for this mess," she said at Queen's Park on Monday.

“We don’t have people who want to work in our schools, and we have people leaving at record rate because of this government’s disrespect and lack of resources in education.”

In a statement provided to CTV News Toronto on Tuesday, the Ministry of Education said that personnel decisions such as recruitment and retention fall under the jurisdiction of school boards.

In an effort to assist boards in alleviating the crunch, the province says it has taken a number of steps, including reducing the amount of time to process teaching certification applications, permitting students in regular, full-time education programs to work in schools while completing their studies, and developing a Teacher Supply and Demand Action Table, tasked with developing a set of recommendations to improve recruitment and retention.
