Every year, UNESCO selects the World Book Capital for one year, which carries out a programme of activities to celebrate and promote books and reading. This year, Strasbourg has been selected as the World Book Capital.

World Book Day 2024: Date, Origin, and Theme

World Book and Copyright Day is an annual event celebrated on April 23, organised by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. First celebrated in 1995, the origin of the day was proposed in 1922 by Vicente Clavel Andres, a publisher from Barcelona, Spain, as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes and boost the sales of books.

The celebration was initially held on Cervantes’ birthday, October 7, before being moved to his death date, April 23, 1930. The date of April 23 was chosen to honour the death anniversaries of notable literary figures such as William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth anniversaries of other greats like Haldor K. Laxness, Maurice Druon, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.

The theme for this year’s World Book and Copyright Day is “Read Your Way,” which aims to promote a love of reading for everyone, regardless of their age or background. It encourages people to explore the written word in any format or genre and discover the joy and enrichment that come with it.

World Book Day 2024: Significance

Reading is not just about gaining knowledge. It also sparks imagination, fuels creativity, and enhances critical thinking skills. UNESCO promotes books and authors, highlighting the power of literature to foster cultural diversity, multilingualism, and the exchange of ideas.

In addition, the Copyright Day draws attention to the importance of copyright protection. Copyright laws are crucial in safeguarding the rights of authors, publishers, and all creative minds. They ensure that creators receive recognition and fair compensation for their intellectual efforts, promoting a thriving literary and artistic landscape.

This special day sees book fairs, author readings, workshops, storytelling sessions, and discussions on copyright issues taking place around the world. Diverse entities collaborate to promote literacy and raise awareness about intellectual property rights, from schools and libraries to bookstores and cultural institutions.

In essence, this day is a celebration of the transformative power of books, as it enable us to unlock a world of knowledge, imagination, and illumination.

World Book and Copyright Day celebrates ‘fundamental importance’ of literature

At a period of global uncertainty and confinement, books open the door to freedom, transporting readers beyond time and borders, the head of the UN’s educational and cultural agency, UNESCO , said on Friday. 

For this year’s edition of World Book and Copyright Day , UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay encouraged everyone “to pick up a book, start turning its pages, and draw from it a breath of fresh air, which will help sustain you now and in the future.”

The power we need now 

She noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are turning to reading to help them escape lockdown and cope with anxiety.   

“It is the power of books that we all need right now, as we are reminded of the fundamental importance of literature – as well as the arts – in our lives.” 

Books are unique because they have the ability both to entertain and to teach, Ms. Azoulay said. 

“They are a means of exploring realms beyond our personal experience through exposure to different authors, ideas and cultures”, she said.  “They are a means of accessing the deepest places in our minds. Page by page, books light a path for us to roam, unbound by time or borders. In other words, books give us freedom.” 

Protect literary professions 

World Book and Copyright Day is observed annually on 23 April, marking the deaths of the writers William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. 

Ms. Azoulay said while the Day honours authors “whose works have been captivating our imagination for centuries”, it also pays homage to all the professions associated with books, namely editing, translation, publishing and book selling.  

“These fields make it possible to disseminate our literary heritage, to allow for the expression of new ideas, and to enable the spread of stories,” she explained.  

“These professions must be protected and their value acknowledged. This is all the more relevant in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which poses a deep and  lasting threat to culture.” 

Reading: A refuge for everyone 

The UNESCO chief highlighted the unique ability books have, to both entertain and to teach. 

“They  are  a  means  of  exploring  realms  beyond  our  personal  experience  through  exposure  to  different  authors,  ideas  and  cultures,” she said.  “They  are  a  means  of  accessing  the  deepest  places in our minds. Page by page, books light a path for us to roam, unbound by time or borders. In other words, books give us freedom.” 

Ms. Azoulay stressed that the power of books must be fully harnessed.  “We must ensure their access so that everyone can take refuge in reading, and by doing so, be able to dream, learn and reflect”, she said. 

UNESCO has designated Tbilisi, Georgia as the 2021 World Book Capital.  The city was chosen because of its focus on using modern technologies to promote reading among young people, including through a programme that transforms books into digital games, thus ensuring access to all.

World Book and Copyright Day 2021 - Writers celebrate with UNESCO

Every 23 April, World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. Proclaimed by UNESCO's General Conference in 1995, this symbolic date of world literature coincides with the death of writers William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. This day pays tribute to books and authors and promotes access to reading for as many people as possible. Transcending physical boundaries, the book represents one of the most beautiful inventions for sharing ideas and embodies an effective tool for fighting poverty and building sustainable peace.

This year UNESCO will disseminate quotes, poems and messages to symbolise the power of books and encourage reading. By sharing knowledge, reading and books, we build community and can connect readers around the world, helping to alleviate loneliness. Some well-known authors of Hispanic literature have also wanted to join this year's celebration by reading excerpts from their books.

We invite students, teachers, readers around the world, as well as the entire book industry and library services to bear witness and express their love for reading with others through the hashtag #WorldBookDay.

World Book and Copyright Day, otherwise known as World Book Day, is celebrated every year on April 23. The events done to honor the day are organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. The holiday was originally invented by Vicente Clavel Andres to honor Miguel de Cervantes, a notable Spanish author.

History of World Book and Copyright Day

Although World Book and Copyright Day was officially inaugurated in 1995, its conception is traceable to Spanish writer, Vicente Clavel Andres, who conceived the idea in 1922. He developed the holiday to pay tribute to the notable author, Miguel de Cervantes. Because Cervantes was born on October 7, World Book Day was celebrated for the first time on October 7, 1926.

However, in 1930, King Alfonso XIII of Spain changed the date to April 23, which is Cervantes’ death date. In Catalonia, Spain, the holiday enjoyed great popularity — especially because April 23 is also the feast day of Saint Jordi or ‘Diada de Sant Jordi,’ the patron saint of Catalonia. On Saint Jordi’s day, gifts are given, and ever since the Barcelona Book Fair of 1931, typical gifts include books and roses. Coincidentally, April 23 also marks the death anniversary of authors William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. These factors played a major role in UNESCO selecting April 23 to celebrate its own World Book and Copyright Day in 1995.

The purpose of the holiday is to encourage and promote reading and publishing, as well as advance the protection of intellectual property through copyright. According to UNESCO’s website — “It is a time to celebrate the importance of reading, foster children’s growth as readers, and promote a lifelong love of literature and integration into the world of work. Through reading and the celebration of World Book and Copyright Day, 23 April, we can open ourselves to others despite the distance, and we can travel thanks to the imagination.’

Find the world’s wealth and wisdom through books

To promote books, reading, and the stimulation of creativity through copyright – this is why we celebrate World Book and Copyright Day today and every year on 23 April. In her video message, IFLA President Ingrid Parent addressed the importance of books as irreplaceable sources of knowledge, ideas and innovation. "In books we find the wealth and wisdom of the world", Parent said. Parent also remembered all people who cannot read, "be it through illiteracy, through censorship or through language barriers. When people have no access to books and information, they are excluded from the world’s wealth and wisdom."

Being the primary cultural and scientific institutions for providing information as a public good, libraries play a crucial role to build bridges to books and information by helping people to learn new skills, to discover history and culture or to access remote research findings.

IFLA and its members in more than 150 countries worldwide believe that people, communities and organisations need universal and equitable access to information, ideas and works of imagination for their social, educational, cultural, democratic and economic well-being.

23 April is a symbolic date for world literature, since 23 April 1616 was the date of death of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. Initiated in 1995 by UNESCO, this date pays a worldwide tribute to books and their authors, and encourages everyone to discover the pleasure of reading and to gain a renewed respect for the extraordinary contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.

The year 2012 also marks the 80th anniversary of the Index Translationum . This international bibliography of translation provides a unique tool for the monitoring of translation flows in the world. Originally created in 1932, it is the oldest program of UNESCO.

April 23 marks the anniversary of the birth or death of a range of well-known writers, including Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Maurice Druon, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Haldor Kiljan Laxness, Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and William Shakespeare. For this reason, UNESCO's General Conference chose this date to pay tribute to books, the authors who wrote them, and the copyright laws that protect them.

People of all ages take the time to appreciate books and their authors on World Book and Copyright Day.

What Do People Do?

A range of activities to promote reading and the cultural aspects of books are held all over the world. Many of these emphasize international cooperation or friendships between countries. Events include: relay readings of books and plays; the distribution of bookmarks; the announcement of the winners of literary competitions; and actions to promote the understanding of laws on copyright and the protection of authors' intellectual property.

In some years, the Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance is awarded. This is a prize for novels, collections of short stories or picture books that promote tolerance, peace, mutual understanding and respect for other peoples and cultures. There are two categories: one for books aimed at children aged up to 12 years; and one for those aimed at young people aged 13 to 18 years.

Purpose of the day

World Book and Copyright Day is an occasion to pay a worldwide tribute to books and authors and to encourage people to discover the pleasure of reading. It is hoped that this will lead to the renewed respect for those who have made irreplaceable contributions to social and cultural progress. In some years, the UNESCO Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance is awarded. It is also hoped that World Book and Copyright Day will increase people's understanding of and adherence to copyright laws and other measures to protect intellectual copyright.

The year 1995 was named the United Nations Year for Tolerance and UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris, concentrated on this theme. The delegates voted to establish an annual occasion to carry the message of tolerance into the future, in the form of a day to celebrate books, authors and the laws that protect them. The date was chosen because April 23 marks the anniversary of the birth or death of a range of internationally renowned writers and because of the Catalan traditions surrounding this day. In Catalonia, a region of Spain, April 23 is known as La Diada de Sant Jordi (St George's Day) and it is traditional for sweethearts to exchange books and roses. World Book and Copyright Day has been held annually since 1995.

Each year a poster is designed and distributed around the world. It features images designed to encourage people, particularly children, to read books and appreciate literature. There is also a logo for World Book and Copyright Day. It features a circle, representing the world, and two books, one of which is open.

World Book Day, also known as World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book, is celebrated on April 23 rd around the world. UNESCO established the event, which is currently observed in over 100 countries, with the goal of promoting the value of reading, a lifetime love of literature, and integration into the workplace, as well as instilling delight and fostering the growth of readers and emphasising the enjoyment of reading.

History of World Book and Copyright Day

The Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andres came up with the idea for World Book Day in order to honour the famous author Miguel de Cervantes (known for Don Quixote), whose birthday is April 23rd. Following that, in the year of 1995, at the General Conference in Paris, the decision was made to designate April 23 rd as World Book and Copyright Day. The reason for this is the historical significance of April 23 rd , which marks the birth and death of various notable authors from throughout the world.

On April 23 rd , for example, William Shakespeare, Cervantes, Josep Pla, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died, and Manuel Mejia Vallejo, Shakespeare, Haldor K Laxness, and Maurice Druon were born. There is a historical comment that must be made regarding the death dates of Shakespeare and Cervantes. Despite the fact that they deceased on the same day, it was not the same day. The disparity originates from the fact that Spain used the Gregorian calendar at the time, while England used the Julian calendar.

World Book Day 2024: origin, meaning and why it is celebrated on April 23

R eading books brings with it numerous benefits giving people the opportunity to explore new worlds and meet new people both real and imagined. It expands our knowledge and understanding of the world around us and those far away.

To celebrate the wonderment of books and those that make them come to life, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995. However, it got its start long before that in Spain.

The meaning of World Book and Copyright Day

Fundamentally, it is a celebration of the enjoyment of books, reading and storytelling. World Book and Copyright Day is a recognition of power of books to cross space, time and generations, uniting cultures and linking the present with the future and the past.

Literature is a powerful and effective tool to transmit information and knowledge worldwide, promoting culture, education and science. The World Book and Copyright Day is a time for nations to share the message that books can help address challenges which societies around the world and as whole we currently face. Through understanding the economic and political realities that we’re presented with, it is possible to combat inequalities and misinformation.

The origin of World Book and Copyright Day

Setting aside a day to celebrate books traces its beginnings to Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés. In 1922 he proposed the idea as a way to honor fellow countryman author Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later the first celebration took place on 7 October, Cervantes’ birthday, but was moved to 23 April, the date of his death, in 1930.

In 1995, the UNESCO General Conference decided to pay homage to authors and books world-wide as a way of encouraging everyone to access books. Choosing 23 April seemed a logical choice, besides being the date of Cervante’s death, it also happens to be the date William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died, among other prominent authors. Additionally, several distinguished authors were born on 23 April making it a symbolic date in the world of literature.

The UNESCO World Book Capital

Annually since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. The selected city is tasked with carrying out activities over its year-long designation to encourage “a culture of reading and diffusing its values in all ages and population groups in and out of the national borders.”

The initiative was put forward by Spain in 2001, and Madrid was designated the first capital, followed by Alexandria and then New Delhi.

Following those designations cities are chosen each year by the Director-General of UNESCO in consultation with an advisory committee made up of representatives from international organizations representing authors, libraries and publishers.

History of Books

Books did not always have glossy covers and smooth pages like they do today. Clay tablets were used when writing systems were developed in prehistoric civilizations thousands of years ago. Papyrus was later used by humanity. The first people to create something that resembled modern books in that it was made of numerous thick, bamboo pages stitched together were the Chinese in the third century.

Then, in the middle of the 15th century, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press, ushering in an era when books were easily accessible to anyone who wanted to read them. We are all able to enjoy Shakespeare, Tolstoy, and many other authors’ works in the comfort of our own homes today because of that brilliant invention. However, the association between that day and books was first made in Spain in 1923 because it marks the passing of both William Shakespeare and renowned Spanish chronicler Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

Why do we Celebrate World Book and Copyright Day on April 23?

Why are there 2 Dates for World Book Day?

A Valencian author named Vicente Clavel Andrés first proposed having the day coincide with a celebration of Miguel de Cervantes. Either October 7 would be his birthday or April 23 would be his passing.

The latter date was picked because it coincided with the passing of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. In fact, a number of other well-known writers have also passed away on April 23; perhaps authors should avoid using this date!

Even though UNESCO was the organisation behind the creation of this day, some nations observe it on other days of the year. For instance, Sweden , the UK, and Ireland all hold their respective World Book Day celebrations on different days. However, since its inception in 1995, the international day has always been celebrated on the same day.

World Book Day 2024: Date and Theme

In the UK and Ireland, it is observed on 2 March this year. It takes place on 23 April in more than 100 other nations.

The theme for this year is “Read Your Way,”. This theme emphasizes the importance of choice and enjoyment in fostering a love of reading. However, it encourages both children and adults to find ways to engage with books that resonate with them, regardless of format or genre.

• Shop at independent bookstores around the world. Some of our favourites in the United States are Blue Bicycle Books in Charleston, Birchbark Books & Native Arts in Minneapolis, and Little City Books in Hoboken, all of which pay special attention to children’s books.
• Donate used books to the public library in your area.
• Give to book charities like Books for Africa, Libraries Without Borders, and Book Aid International, which all provide books to the underprivileged and libraries in refugee camps, hospitals, and schools. For U.S. K–5th-grade students and their classrooms, a different nonprofit organisation called Our Kids Read donates books with inspiring characters from various cultures, including Native American, Black, Hispanic, and Southeast Asian.
• Invite your friends for a reading challenge , and contest with your friends as to who can read more books in a fixed duration of time. You can have book relay with yourself as well by picking up a book of a new genre every time.

Celebrating World Book and Copyright Day 2024

Each year, a country is selected to be the World Book Capital and it is expected to carry out a series of activities to celebrate and promote books and reading. The first event was held in 1995 in Paris, France. In 2023, Accra, Ghana was the World Book Capital and in 2024 it is Strasbourg, France.

The 23rd of April was chosen as the day for this annual celebration because it is the date that famous authors such as William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died but in the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is celebrated on the first Thursday of March as the 23rd of April, St George, is a National feast.

According to the UNESCO Director General, Ms. Audrey Azoulay, the World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated “with the active involvement of all stakeholders: authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs, the mass media, and all those who feel motivated to work together in this world celebration of books and authors.” This event honours authors and pays homage to all the professions associated with books, namely editing, translation, publishing and book selling. 

Ms. Azoulay encourages everyone to read a book daily, bearing in mind that “a book, whatever its format, is an essential means of education and source of knowledge. It is with books that we learn to read. And it is thanks to them that we keep ourselves informed, are entertained and are able to understand the world.”  

Will Africa’s reading culture always remain low?

It often comes spontaneously for many to say that the reading culture in Africa is very low. This is not without facts, though, as the long years of socio-economic crisis, poor educational infrastructure and lack of good reading materials in many African countries constitute part of the reasons why the continent’s population rank low in the reading culture.

Recent studies have shown that about 95% of books published in Africa are for the education sector, as compared to Europe which has a 60:40 ratio of textbooks to non-textbooks. This leaves African leisure readers with access to only 5% of books published for their use.

In the post Covid-19 pandemic, due to heavy financial constraints, many parents would rather pay for food, rent, fees and perhaps only the compulsory school books. Other reading materials, such as story books or novels, are placed either at the end of their shopping list or completely out of it. Yet the children who form the habit of reading for knowledge and self-improvement at an early age do have an increase in vocabulary in a short time and often perform better in school. 

Finding creative ways to encourage reading

In order to improve our reading culture in Africa, the change of mentality must begin in families. The digital age brings us many exciting and creative opportunites, and parents can harnesss them by providing good books, and integrating more reading times, for their children and for themselves. It is important to form the good habit of reading at least a page or two of a book daily and remember to add a book in the birthday, graduation or wedding gift pack.

World Book Day- April 23

World Book Day is celebrated on April 23 rd every year throughout the world. By doing so UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection, of intellectual property through copyright. 23 rd   April is a symbolic date for world literature because, by a strange twist of fate, the 23 rd April 1616 marked the death of three of the greatest authors and playwrights of all time : Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la vega.

It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Vallejo. It was, therefore, a natural choice for UNESCO’s General Conference to pay a world – wide tribute to books and authors on this date,  encouraging everyone, and in particular young people , to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. 

The success of the World Book and Copyright Day will depend Primarily on the Support received from all parties concerned, (authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the mass media), who have been mobilized, in each country, by UNESCO National Commissions, UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations, Associated Schools and  Libraries, and by all     those who feel motivated to work together in this world celebration of books and authors.

The main aim of Word Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of reading books and providing them with me opportunity to have a book of their own.

A library is a collection of information, sources, resources and services, organized for use, and maintained by a public body,  an institution, or a private individual. In the more traditional sense, it means a collection of books. This collection and services  are  used  by people who   choose not to – or cannot afford to – purchase an can reasonably be expected to have, or who require professional assistance with their research.

However, with the collection of media other   than books for storing information , many libraries are now also repositories and access points for maps, prints or other documents and artworks on various storage media such as microfilm, microfiche, audio  tapes, CDs, LPs, cassettes, video tapes and DVDs, and provide public  facilities to access CD- ROM and subscription databases and the Internet. Thus, modern libraries are increasingly  being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats provide the services of specialists who are experts in matters related to finding and organizing information and interpreting information needs, called librarians. 

More recently, libraries are understood as extending beyond the physical walls of a building. By including material accessible by electronic means, and by providing the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing tremendous amounts of knowledge with a variety of digital tools.

The  term ‘ library’ has itself acquired a secondary meaning : “a collection of useful material for common use”, and in  this sense is used in fields such as computer science mathematics and statistics, electronics and biology.

Building a family Library

A home library doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive to provide rich reading experience. Fancy books aren’t necessarily the best way to capture a child’s imagination. Nevertheless, a good family library does involve time and space time to find materials that will interest all the readers in the family, and space to keep and enjoy them. Here are some questions that might come to mind as you plan a family library :

Where is the best place to set up our library?

Many families have found that setting aside a spot in the home for a family library helps them make reading, a part of family life. you don’t need much space; a corner of a room with a bookshelf, comfortable furniture, and adequate lighting is just fine.

How large should our library be?

Variety counts and not size. Instead of focusing on the number of books, keep in mind the special interests and preferences of each member of the family. Ask your children what they like to read, and try to stock up on their favorite subjects and authors. A small collection of books, thoughtfully gathered over time, is better than a large collection that goes unread.

How should we display our collection?

In a way that in the family to dig in, sturdy bookcases, built- in shelves, and open magazine racks are excellent place to display and store reading material. An orange crate works well, too. A floor-to- ceiling wall system with glass doors might be beautiful to  behold, but would discourage a young reader who could not get to books inside. Be sure to put reading material for the youngest  readers on the lowest shelves. You may want to group together books about your child’s favorite topics – from dinosaurs to space travel  or books by a favorite author.

What kinds of reading materials should we include?

Just about anything goes in a family library. Paperback and hardcover books, a dictionary , an atlas, songbooks, magazines for parents and kids, newspapers, and even mail –order catalogs all have a place. Keep the ages and interests of family members in mind when selecting material ,and get their suggestions. Make sure, there is something for everyone at every reading level.

A shelf of One’s Own

Children may want a place separate from the family library to keep books that have special meaning or value for them. By encouraging children to set aside their personal favourites. You are helping them express their affection for books, and showing them that you respect their reading. 

Here are some tips for helping your children set up their own collections;

Find a special place for your children’s books. If your children’s room does not already have a bookshelf or bookcase , you can use a box, basket, or other sturdy container,. Plastic stacking cubes work well and come in a variety of colors.

As often as possible, let your children choose the books they want to read and add to their collection. A book- buying trip to a yard sale or bookstore can be a fun Saturday morning family activity.

Take your children to the library regularly. Even a child with a well- stocked bookshelf needs a frequent. Fresh supply of books. Encourage your children to keep their library books alongside their own books and to treat them with the same care and affection. Children’s librarians can be a big help in suggesting books for your library.

Give your children books or magazine subscriptions as gifts. Encourage them to give books as gifts to other family members.

For babies and young toddlers, choose sturdy books that can survive rough handling. Board books, for example, have thick pages that can be turned easily and wiped clean. 

Display a few books with their covers facing out. An appealing cover might entice a youngster to pick up the book and peek inside. 

Types of libraries

Libraries can be divided into categories by several methods

Academic libraries

These libraries are located on the campuses of colleges and universities and serve primarily the students and faculty of the that and other academic institutions. Some academic libraries, especially those at public institutions, are accessible to the general public in whole or in part. 

School libraries

Most public and private primary and secondary schools have libraries designed to support the school’s curriculum.

Research libraries

These libraries are intended for supporting scholarly research, and therefore maintain permanent collection and attempt to provide access to all necessary material. Research libraries are most often academic libraries or national libraries, but many large special libraries have research libraries within their special field and a very few of the largest public libraries also serve as research libraries.

Public libraries or public lending libraries

These libraries provide service to the general public and make at least some of their books a available for borrowing, so that readers may use them at home over a period of days or weeks. Typically, libraries issue library cards to community members wishing to borrow books. Many public libraries also serve as community organizations that provide free services and evens to the public, such as babysitting classes and story time.

 Special libraries

All other libraries fall into this category. Many private business and public organizations, including hospitals, museums, research laboratories, law firms ,and many government departments and agencies, maintain their own libraries for the use of their employees in doing specialized research related to their work. Special  libraries may or may not be accessible to some identified part of the general public. Branches of a large academic or research libraries dealing with particular subjects are also usually called “special libraries”.

Circulation libraries

Many institutions make a distinction  between circulation libraries (where materials are expected and intended to be loaned to patrons, institutions, or other    libraries) and collecting libraries (where the materials are selected on a basis of their natures or subject matter). Many modern libraries are a mixture of both, as they contain a general collection for circulation, and a reference collection which is often more specialized , as well as restricted to the library premises. 

The National Library of India

The National Library, India is the largest library in the country. it is an institution of National Importance under the ‘Department of Culture, Ministry of Tourism & Culture,  Government of India’. The library is designated to collect, disseminate and preserve the printed material produced in the country. The library is situated on a scenic 30 acres Belvedere Estate, in Kolkata, formerly Calcutta City. ‘its collection  is in excess of one million books.

Before independence, it was the official residence of Lt. Governor of Bengal. Afterwards the Government of India  changed the name of the Imperial Library as the National Library, and the collection was shifted from The Esplanade to the present Belvedere Estate. On February 1, 1953 the National Library was opened to the public.

Acquisition and conservation of all significant national production of printed material, excluding ephemera

Collection of printed material concerning the Country, no matter where and in what language it is published, and as a corollary, the acquisition of photographic records of such material that is not available within the country.

Acquisition and  conservation of foreign material required by the country.

Rendering of bibliographical and documents services of current and retrospective material, both general and specialized.

Active as a referral centre purveying full and accurate knowledge

Electronic Books

An e-book, an electronic book, is an electronic ( or digital) equivalent of a conventional printed book. The term has occasionally been used ambiguously to either an individual work in a digital format, or a hardware device used to read books in digital format, more specifically called an e- book device or e-book  reader. E-book are an emerging and rapidly changing technology, that can branch to include other formats, such as online magazines, such as the Grantville Gazette, published by Baen’s Books, or digital books designed to be listened to as audio books.

The term e-text is a broader term than e-book , and is also used for the particular case  of data in ASCII text format, rather than  books in proprietary file formats. It also includes the academic e- text, which commonly contains components such as facsimile images, apparatus criticus , and scholarly commentary on the work from one or more editors specially qualified to  edit the author work in question.

An e-book is commonly bundled by a publisher for distribution (as an e-book or an internet newspaper), whereas e-text is distributed in plain text on the Web, or in the case of academic works, in the form of discrete media such as compact discs.  Metadata commonly include details about author, title, publisher, an copyright date; less common are details regarding language, genre , relevant copyright conventions, etc.

The Monster Leviathan

Doshi: The Art of Balkrishna

Balkrishna Doshi (1927-2023), the first Indian architect to receive the Pritzker Prize, was a trailblazer of modern architecture in Asia. A brand-new facsimile reproduction of the first monograph ever written about Sigurd Lewerentz, architect, is available here. This iconic book, which was first published in Swedish in 1985, combines text, images, sketches, and blueprints to present his whole body of work and tell the story of his life. Wilfried Wang, a German-Chinese architect, critic, and professor, concludes this edition by placing Lewerentz in a modern context through his work and legacy.

Fitopolis, the living city

Stefano Mancuso | Laterza editions

Mancunso’s book suggests converting urban areas into “phytopolis,” or settings where animal-plant coexistence is as harmonious as it is in the natural world. It is the (utopian?) remedy put forth by scientist Stefano Mancuso in the piece that Laterza published a few weeks ago.

This book depicts a complex scenario by tracing some of the evolutionary stages of our species, which until recently lived literally immersed in nature. Today, living in a metropolis demands a constant flow of resources and energy, which are finite. Furthermore, climate instability adds another layer of complexity. This is the reason restoring nature to our environment is so crucial.

A Nocturnal History of Architecture

Solar and diurnal paradigms have served as the foundation for architectural theory, debate, and agency for ages. There are only a few allusions to the night in Vitruvius’ De architectura, and even fewer in the most important Renaissance treatises by Palladio or Alberti. The development and institutionalization of electric light in both public and private settings did not begin to gradually alter the agency of darkness in the field of architecture until the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book is an epic voyage through more than 2000 years of entanglements between night and space design across many continents and geographies, and it is a chronological first attempt at writing a Nocturnal History of Architecture. Through the analysis and study of “night scenes,” this book seeks to demonstrate how the night serves as a testing ground for novel conceptions of space and, eventually, of existence.

Space of Power, Power of Space: Designing the Relationship between the Individual and the State

Riken Yamamoto | Birkhauser

Riken Yamamoto received the 2024 Pritzker Award, being the 9 th Japanese architect to have won the prize. Yamamoto’s writing in The Space of Power is noted for its clarity and conciseness. Date to be published in October of this year, the book marks a departure from an era where Japanese architects felt compelled to delve into complex theories about the nature of architecture. Reflecting on the landscape of architectural discourse over the past decade, the author expresses regret for not discovering the book earlier. While the text is in Japanese, the lack of translation is understandable given the nuanced nature of the content. The title itself presents translation challenges, with different interpretations depending on the orientation of the slash symbol. In the absence of a definitive interpretation, the translator opts for “vs.” to convey the notion of opposition between “The Space of Power” and “The Power of Space.”

Constructing Latin America. Architecture, Politics, and Race at the Museum of Modern Art

Patricio del Real | Yale University Press

Del Real’s examination of exhibitions spanning the interwar period through the Cold War sheds light on the ideological underpinnings of the Department of Architecture’s endeavors, particularly the role of Pan-Americanism in positioning the United States on the cultural forefront. Despite the perception of modern architecture as a tool of imperialism, Del Real highlights MoMA’s nuanced approach, which involved back-and-forth dynamics with Latin America while safeguarding U.S. interests. The book unveils MoMA’s shifting discourses on architecture in Latin America, showcasing how it mirrored broader geopolitical tensions and sought to define an “American” civilization. Del Real emphasizes the promotion of mestizo identities, especially through Brazilian architecture, as exemplifying racial conciliation. However, MoMA’s institutional vision, influenced by Alfred H. Barr, Jr., perpetuated an ideological-political agenda rooted in aesthetic quality, leading to the eventual curbing of Brazilian modernism’s influence.

Cities that are coastal or riverfront in particular suffer loss and destruction as a result of notable rises in sea level, precipitation, and flooding. African cities are experiencing an increase in growth potential concurrently. The future of urban and rural developments in Africa, home to individuals who are redefining our understanding of cities through creative adaptations of spaces, materials, and infrastructure, depends on the intersections of water and cities. These developments will inevitably involve existential factors pertaining to humanity and the environment.

Untold Stories: Hong Kong Architecture

This book aims to shine a spotlight on the talented but often overlooked local architects of Hong Kong, whose original work has made significant contributions to the city’s landscape. It seeks to tell the stories of these gifted individuals for the first time, offering them the recognition and admiration they deserve. Renowned ink painter and architect Raymond Fung JP; FHKIA; HonAIA(HK) is among those featured in the book. With over 50 significant honours in visual arts, architecture, and interior design, including the Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Designers’ Award, Fung is recognized for his exceptional contributions to the field. Currently serving as an adjunct professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Architecture and holding various advisory roles in organizations such as the Hong Kong Observatory and the LCSD Museum, Fung brings his wealth of experience and expertise to the exploration of Hong Kong’s architectural landscape.

Humanise: A Maker’s Guide to Building Our World

Thomas Heatherwick launches the “Humanise” campaign, aiming to address public health issues caused by mundane buildings and inspire better architectural standards worldwide. Research shows that bland structures contribute to higher stress levels, affecting mental well-being. Additionally, such buildings significantly contribute to the climate crisis, with construction and demolition generating substantial carbon emissions and waste. Heatherwick emphasizes the need for buildings that captivate attention and advocates for emotional consideration in architectural design, long-term thinking for durability, and focusing on engaging features near entrances.

Modern Chinese Architecture: 180 Years

Nancy C. Steinhardt | ORO Editions

Modern Chinese Architecture: 180 Years offers a concise overview of China’s architectural evolution from 1840 to 2020. The book tracks the shift from traditional timber-frame structures to contemporary skyscrapers and eco-friendly materials, providing historical context for each phase. It narrates China’s journey from monarchy to republic to a people’s republic, illustrating how architectural changes mirror societal advancements like literacy and urbanization. Neo Heritage: Defining Contemporary African Architecture

Published last year, the book introduces Olajumoke Adenowo, a renowned Nigerian architect known as “Africa’s starchitect” and a significant female figure in the field. Adenowo founded AD Consulting in Lagos in 1994 and achieved academic success early, earning degrees in architecture by age 19. Her interest in architecture stemmed from childhood trips and her upbringing in a university environment. Throughout her career, Adenowo has embraced her African heritage while maintaining a global perspective, aiming to promote best practices in African contemporary architecture. Her thesis, “Neo-Heritage,” seeks to integrate African heritage design ideas into global architectural solutions. Adenowo is recognized internationally for her achievements and also advocates for women’s empowerment, global aesthetics, and African entrepreneurial leadership.

L’Architettrice

And in addition to this list of architecture books that will be published in 2024, we will mention one last publication from 2022, L’Architettrice . We would like to talk about this piece having in mind 8 th March as International Women’s Day, since it aims to recognize those first female architects who were not recognized at the time.

Melania Mazzuco’s novel, which follows her normal course of rescuing people from official histories and painstakingly reconstructing Baroque Rome through a narrative that strays from hegemonic canons and places well-known lead players in a supporting role. Thus, rivals like Bernini and Borromini, as well as Popes Urban VII and Innocent X, Guido Reni, and Pietro da Cortona, are merely incidental figures in the life of a young lady who hoped to represent transformation, a new era, and a chance for all women to start again.

Reading and writing go hand in hand, so what better way to celebrate World Book Day than to get your class writing about a beloved book or a favourite character? Every year around World Book Day the Pobble Writing Bank is topped up with yet more brilliant book-based work, which is not only ideal for guided reading, ‘up-levelling’, topic research, and ‘WAGOLLs’, but also serves as an excellent place to head for finding ideas and lesson inspiration.

Here are 12 wonderful World Book Day writing ideas for you to try, shared on Pobble  by teachers like you...  

Letter to an author 💡 Choose their favourite author or the author of a book you're reading in class. What will they ask them? Perhaps they'd like some writing tips or to learn the inspiration behind their books. See an example on Pobble.  

Alternative ending 💡 Take a well-known story or their favourite and ask your class to write an alternative ending. What will they change? How could it end differently? Read an example.  

Author profiles 💡 Ask your class to capture the essential points of an author's life by writing an author profile. They could include credentials, achievements, and an overview of the books they've written. See an example on Pobble.

Twisted tales 💡 Take a traditional tale and give it a twist! Perhaps they could write it from a different character's point of view, change the opening, the setting or the ending! So many opportunities to get creative! Here's a fun example.  

Read all about it! 💡 Ask your class to become news reporters and write a news story based on what happens in their favourite book. Can they include a snappy headline, quotes, and key facts? Check out this example.

Wanted! 💡 Create a wanted poster for a well-known book baddie! What key features does your class think the poster needs? Great for character descriptions! Here's a great example.

Book blurb 💡 Can your class write their own short, yet descriptive account of a book in the form of a blurb? What information will they include to intrigue the readers and make them open the book? You could get them to design the cover too! See an example here.

Book review 💡 It's an oldie, but a goodie! Why should everyone read the book they love? It's a great way to work on their persuasive skills. Here's an example.

Story starter 💡 Give your class the first line or two from a popular book and ask them to continue the story in a different way. Where will their version of the story take them? Will there be any new characters? Check out this example.

Character descriptions 💡 A great excuse to explore figurative language. Can your class write a description of their favourite book character? Perhaps they could create their own and write about that! Here's an example.

Book poetry 💡 Here's a fun challenge! Grab the closest book, go to page 29, write 10 words that catch your eyes, then use 7 of the words to write a poem. Can your class complete this challenge? See an example on Pobble.
