PLDT Home continues to dominate market share with innovative products, sustainable initiatives

P LDT Home, the home broadband unit of the Philippines’ leading integrated network PLDT Inc. has sustained its market leadership in the country with its innovative portfolio.

2023 growth

Currently, it accounts for 50% of the total fiber-to-the-home industry customers with 3.2 million fiber customers as of the end-2023. It also posted P53 billion in the same year, registering 9% growth in revenue year-on-year.

“PLDT Home reported an industry-leading average revenue per user (ARPU) of P1,493 which is 11% higher compared to the previous year and registering better churn rates at 1.8% than the industry average of 2%,” PLDT Home said.

Since 2021, the broadband unit has consistently increased its share of industry revenues to 50.6% as of end-2023.

In 2023 alone, Jeremiah de la Cruz, PLDT senior vice President and head of Consumer Business – Home reported that the brand recorded 68% of the industry revenue growth.

Future plans, innovative portfolio

Amid its growth, the broadband unit still seeks to elevate customer experience by introducing new products for the home.

It also plans to expand its fiber footprint this year and reach more households and barangays as part of its push to grow in greenfield areas.

PLDT Home added that it used 59% of its ports as it continued its network expansion. It is likewise improving its customer care efforts by ensuring “a more proactive approach in dealing with complaints, helping reduce repair and follow-up calls.”

“Our goal is clear: we want to further elevate the experience of our customers by providing the best-in-class broadband connection and innovative products and services to more Filipino families. We plan on leveraging our multiple technologies and tailor-fitted packages to enable connectivity to every home,” Dela Cruz said.

PLDT Home is also improving its customer care efforts by ensuring a more proactive approach in dealing with complaints, helping reduce repair and follow-up calls.

Meanwhile, after it launched the country’s first Gigabit Fiber plans in February that boasts ultrafast, first-world connectivity speeds of up to 10Gbps, PLDT Home is also introducing its Always On service.

This new broadband service promises to deliver “uninterrupted connectivity” for PLDT Home customers.

“We want to continue to enable our customers to experience a new era of connectivity with technologies that provide them with an unmatched digital experience and speeds at home,” Dela Cruz said.

Other initiatives

Aside from this, the broadband unit is eyeing to help narrow the digital divide in the country by supporting various digital skilling programs that foster job creation, entrepreneurship and poverty reduction among women and vulnerable sectors of society.

Among the initiatives include child safety features in its services, PLDT’s Child Protection Platform that automatically blocks and prevents access to online child sexual abuse and exploitation materials.

“The brand has also been leveraging industry partnerships to offer digital parenting solutions and customer education efforts in line with protecting children from risks and harms online,” it added.

Furthermore, PLDT Home promotes “responsible consumption and circularity,” by incorporating electronic waste (e-waste) collection efforts in its marketing, sales, retail store operations, and customer engagements.

“Through its Be Kind. Recycle. program, PLDT’s broadband unit promotes recycling and creates an ecosystem for Filipino households to dispose of their e-waste properly and conveniently,” it said.

“As a staunch champion of sustainability, PLDT Home has been actively taking steps to ensure that our services and operations are generating positive impact to our customers, and at the same time, using its voice and maximizing every platform to enable our customers to embrace sustainable practices at home, and in the digital age,” PLDT First Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer, and Head of Investor Relations Melissa Vergel de Dios,” said.

The brand said that these efforts are part of PLDT group’s commitment to help the country contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.  — Rosette Adel

PLDT reports 60% profit slide, sets P85-B capex

pldt business plan 2023

PLDT Inc. recorded a 60.2% decline in its attributable net income to P10.49 billion in 2022 largely as a result of accelerated network and technology upgrades.

Danny Y. Yu, the PLDT group’s controller, said in a briefing on Thursday that last year’s accelerated depreciation amounted to P51.2 billion, which was mainly a result of a P19.2-billion transport network modernization.

He also cited P9.7 billion for the migration of the network to fiber, P9.4 billion for sunset 3G technology initiatives, P3.2 billion for the replacement of fiber optic cables, and P1.8 billion for the write-down of legacy network equipment at the group’s offices.

Meanwhile, total depreciation and amortization expenses jumped 89.2% to P98.7 billion last year from P52.2 billion in the previous year.

Despite this, the company said it reached record-high earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA).

“For the first time as a company we have reached P100 billion EBITDA level, we ended up with P100.5 billion, 4% higher than last year,” PLDT President and Chief Executive Officer Alfredo S. Panlilio said.

The company’s EBITDA margin was at 51% in 2022, slightly lower than 52% in 2021.

“This is a focused area for us as we strive to improve EBITDA margins moving forward and we will make sure that we even go beyond 51%,” Mr. Panlilio said.

In 2022, PLDT’s consolidated total revenues reached P205.2 billion, up by 6% from the P193.3 billion it generated a year earlier.

Consolidated service revenues last year were 6% higher at P196.2 billion than 2021’s P185.8 billion.

“Our home business continues to lead the charge growing 20% to P57.4 billion in 2022, a historic high,” Mr. Yu said.

Meanwhile, revenues from PLDT’s fiber-only business reached P48.5 billion, up by 45%, while revenues from the enterprise business were 8% higher at P47.5 billion. Individual business revenues went down by 5% to P82 billion.

2023 CAPITAL EXPENDITURE For 2023, the company is earmarking P80 billion to P85 billion for capital expenditure (capex) projects, down from the P96.8 billion it used last year.

“[For this year’s] capex, we expect it to be between P80 billion to P85 billion, down compared to around P96 billion last year,” PLDT Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said.

In total, capital spending in 2022 reached P96.8 billion, Mr. Yu said, consisting of information technology and network capex of P76.9 billion and business capex of P12.2 billion.

Last year’s capex included investment in capacity to support home broadband business, the construction of the 11th data center, investment in international cabling systems, the impact of the sale and leaseback of telco towers, and continuous investment in cybersecurity infrastructure.

Mr. Pangilinan said that the company is expecting a mid-single-digit growth in service revenues in 2023.

“We expect revenue growth to be in the mid-single-digit range, EBITDA [growth will be the] same — mid-single-digit range,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Pangilinan said there is a need to review the forecast for telco core income in 2023.

“We anticipate that we will have better guidance numbers for the telco core and telco reported income by the time that we announce the first quarter results in May this year,” he said.

“It is likely to be better than the P33.1 billion we reported in 2022. How much higher? We cannot give you with some level of precision but we will provide guidance sometime in May,” he added.

Telco core income was higher by 9.6% from P30.2 billion in 2021.

BUDGET OVERRUN In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, PLDT said there was no evidence of fraud, intentional concealment, or bad faith conduct on the part of any employee in relation to the P48-billion capex overrun disclosed in December last year.

The overrun represented the PLDT management’s estimate of the outstanding commitments to its major vendors for the acquisition of property and equipment after 2022 due to the anticipated cancellation or amendment of certain outstanding purchase orders.

PLDT said discussions had been completed with its major vendors representing around 80% of its outstanding capex commitments as of Dec. 31, 2022.

It said agreements with vendors reduced PLDT’s outstanding commitments to them for the acquisition of property and equipment after 2022 to P33 billion.

“The company plans to engage in similar discussions with non-major vendors to achieve similar results,” it said.

According to PLDT Chief Legal Counsel Atty. Marilyn Victorio-Aquino, 80% of major vendors had signed up as of March 23.

“We have the entire 2023 to finish the discussions with the other major vendors because the outcome of the discussions or the settlements will be reflected in the financials of 2023,” she added.

On Thursday, shares in PLDT declined by P22 or 1.59% to close at P1,359 apiece.

PLDT Inc.’s home broadband subsidiary aims to sustain its leadership in the market this year, after accounting for more than half of the industry’s total revenues in 2023.

In a roundtable discussion on Thursday, PLDT SVP Jeremiah de la Cruz said PLDT Home generated over half of the industry’s fiber-only revenues, amounting to P53 billion, representing a 9-percent growth from the year prior.

With 3.2 million fiber customers as of end-2023, PLDT Home continues to dominate the market, commanding 50 percent of the total fiber-to-the-home industry customers.

Since 2021, the company has consistently increased its share of industry revenues, reaching 50.6 percent by the end of 2023. Moreover, PLDT Home contributed to the growth of the Philippine telco sector, driving 68 percent of the industry’s revenue hike in 2023 alone.

This year, de la Cruz said the company plans to outpace the market even further, focusing on building its fiber broadband business through expansion to greenfield areas.

“We have to be able to sustain it, but that’s not the goal and attitude. We want to continue to grow and outpace the market. In 2024, we are going to reaccelerate our fiber rollout in greenfields,” he said.

PLDT Home has an average revenue per use of P1,493, an 11-percent rise from the year prior.

De la Cruz noted that the company has also maintained a low churn rate of 1.8 percent, below the industry average of 2 percent.

PLDT Home continues to expand its portfolio of offerings and services to meet the different connectivity needs of Filipino households. Following the introduction of the country’s first Gigabit Fiber plans that offer ultrafast, first-world connectivity speeds of up to 10Gbps, PLDT Home is unveiling its Always On service.

“The Always-On broadband service represents a pioneering solution in the industry, delivering uninterrupted connectivity to PLDT Home customers. This service ensures seamless, ultra-high-speed internet access 24/7, empowering users for work, study, or entertainment,” PLDT said.

“We want to continue to enable our customers to experience a new era of connectivity with technologies that provide them with an unmatched digital experience and speeds at home,” added de la Cruz.

PLDT Home eyes over 50% fiber revenue share in 2024

PLDT Inc.'s home broadband unit PLDT Home is aiming to further boost its fiber revenue share for the residential segment this year, going above the 50.6 percent share it recorded in 2023.

"Rest assured, end of 2024, we would have grown our revenue share. You'll see growth in the fiber business, it will continue. In 2023, you saw nine percent. We do want to see continuous growth in 2024," said PLDT Senior Vice President and Head of Consumer Business - Home Jeremiah de la Cruz in a press interview on April 18.

Last year, de la Cruz noted that PLDT Home capture 60 percent of the growth or increment seen in the fiber boom in 2023, leveling at 50.6 percent in the overall revenues split across other telco fiber network providers.

By the end of 2022, PLDT Home logged just over 49 percent in revenues share.

On a year-on-year basis, it posted a nine percent growth to P53 billion in fiber revenues in 2023.

"So just over 50 percent of all fiber revenue in the Philippines in residential was generated by PLDT. We want to grow that," he added, marking 3.2 million fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) customers by end of last year.

In terms of average revenue per user (ARPU), PLDT Home is also hoping to improve their figures. In 2023, it recorded 11 percent higher ARPU at P1,493, with churn rates at 1.8 percent. It has also utilize 59 percent of its ports.

"We need to show that actually we're outpacing the market...As you know, that's the ultimate measure. Revenue share is an important part for us," said de la Cruz.

This growth will be driven mainly by the fiber business, he remarked, aligned with PLDT's plans this year to reaccelerate their fiber rollout, deploy more fiber to barangays, and invest in expanding their networks and improving service level for pre- and post-sales.

"Our goal is clear: we want to further elevate the experience of our customers by providing the best-in-class broadband connection and innovative products and services to more Filipino families. We plan on leveraging our multiple technologies and tailor-fitted packages to enable connectivity to every home," he said in a statement.

Leaked presentation reveals Microsoft's astounding plan to ramp up data-center capacity for the AI boom

  • Microsoft's data-center capacity jumped in recent quarters, a leaked internal presentation shows.
  • The company is planning even faster data-center growth in the coming quarters.
  • Microsoft delivered "record-level GPU capacity," according to the presentation.

Microsoft significantly expanded its data-center capacity recently and plans to ramp up growth to astounding levels going forward, according to an internal document obtained by Business Insider.

Since July 2023, the start of Microsoft's latest fiscal year, the company delivered more than 500 megawatts of new data-center capacity , the document disclosed.

This document was part of a confidential slide deck from the company's Cloud Operations and Innovation team that was presented earlier this year.

Under the heading "Commercial Cloud and AI Demands: Fueling our Expansion," the document said Microsoft surpassed 5 gigawatts of total data-center installed capacity in the first half of its latest fiscal year.

The rise of generative artificial intelligence and huge foundation models is fueling a new data-center boom . Microsoft is leading the way through its partnership with OpenAI , the startup behind ChatGPT and GPT-4 .

These AI models need to be trained on mountains of data and then fine-tuned intensely. That takes thousands of GPUs and a pile of other related gear that's housed in huge data centers. These facilities use so much power that their capacity is measured in megawatts and gigawatts of electricity.

Shaolei Ren , an electrical and computer engineering professor at the University of California, Riverside, said Microsoft's 5 gigawatts of installed data-center capacity, if fully used, would be equivalent to Hong Kong or Portugal's annual electricity consumption.

"Astonishing speed"

It doesn't stop there. The software giant laid out even more radical growth plans for its data-center empire in the document obtained by BI.

Related stories

"With a strong Commercial Cloud business, our goal is clear," Microsoft said in this part of the slide presentation.

Microsoft wants to double new data-center capacity in the second half of its fiscal year. This runs from early 2024 to the middle of this year.

In the first half of Microsoft's 2025 fiscal year, which runs from early July through the end of 2024, the company aims to "achieve 3x growth" in new data-center capacity.

This requires Microsoft to deliver more than 200 megawatts in data-center capacity every month.

"This is an astonishing speed," Ren told BI. "This is a very large data-center capacity."

Ren said Microsoft's capacity plans suggested the company was either seeing huge demand or simply wanting to stay competitive by securing future power capacity that otherwise might be taken by competitors.

He added that this also raised questions about the environmental consequences of adding such a large data-center footprint, given the carbon emissions and water consumption of the facilities.

A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment.

'Record-level GPU capacity'

The company is also securing a record number of GPUs to handle new AI workloads in data centers.

In the second half of last year, Microsoft delivered "record-level GPU capacity," more than doubling its total installed GPU base, the document said, without mentioning actual numbers.

Microsoft's GPU footprint expanded into 39 additional data centers in this period, and the company now has "AI clusters" live in 98 locations globally.
