University of California, Irvine
California, united states.
The Programs in the writing of poetry and fiction lead to the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in English. In addition to the workshops and seminars taught within the Writing Program by its faculty, instruction is offered by visiting writers. The curriculum is augmented by frequent readings on the Irvine campus.
The MFA centers around the Graduate Writers' Workshop, a group which meets each quarter in poetry and fiction, in which faculty and students share in criticism and discussion of student writing. Each year there are about ten MFA students in poetry and twelve in fiction, half in their first year and half in their second year in the Writing Program. About two-thirds of the Writing Program student's work consists of participation in the Workshop; the other third is devoted to graduate-level seminars offered by the MFA faculty and other faculty of the Departments of English and Comparative Literature and other graduate programs. The aim of the Program in Writing is the training of accomplished writers who intend to make their writing their life. What we expect of our students is passionate precision, character, and stamina. What we want most for our students is that each will sooner or later write something that lasts. Successful writing, we think, is writing that succeeds itself each time it is read with interest and care by a succession of new readers. To facilitate such writing, the faculty has kept the Writing Program small in order to ensure the high quality of the students as well as to permit much teaching on a one-to-one basis. All students consult frequently with the staff for assistance with their work.

The minor in Creative Writing welcomes undergraduates from all disciplines at UCI. It not only provides instruction and practice in the craft of prose fiction and poetry, but also explores the rich literary tradition of these art forms in English. The minor consists of workshop courses, writing courses, and literature courses, which serve to provide a foundation for students who wish to pursue creative writing professionally, as well as for those who have an amateur interest in the art.
Students who wish to minor in Creative Writing must notify their academic counselor (in the School of their major) to add the minor to their degree audit, and then complete the required courses for the minor.

UCI English Department
Hello! I am a senior right now who's choosing between colleges, and right now, UCI is my top choice as a prospective English, specifically Creative Writing, major. I know that UCI is really well known for both its undergraduate and graduate English program, but is there any more insight that anyone could provide on English and Creative Writing at UCI? Thank you so much!

Graduate | M.F.A. Program
MASTER OF FINE ARTS PROGRAM
Overview Headed by an internationally distinguished faculty, the Graduate Program offers a rigorous, interdisciplinary environment for training in the visual arts. The three-year M.F.A. program comprises a series of core and elective classes in production, theory, and contemporary issues. Graduate students may also take advantage of the academic excellence UCI provides as a leading research university by taking courses in other departments and programs. Through a combination of faculty mentorship, seminars, and regular comprehensive peer critiques, the Department of Art affords an optimal intellectual setting for fostering creative and critical development. In addition to faculty dedicated to facilitating students' understanding of visual art and its cultural contexts, graduate students have access to visiting artists through lectures, studio visits, and colloquia.
Curriculum The M.F.A. program is designed to provide a thorough and intensive professional training for students wishing to pursue careers in the field of contemporary art. The program emphasizes experimental and interdisciplinary approaches to art making, while also providing a solid grounding in various disciplinary mediums and post-studio practices. Students undergo a rigorous course of study combining seminar classes, intensive critique courses, and independent study.
During the first two years, students take courses from a curriculum, totaling 12 units each quarter. Beyond that, students can select additional course work from any sector of the department or university, including approved upper-division undergraduate courses. The third year is structured so that students can devote themselves to the production of their thesis exhibition, working intensively with a small faculty committee.
Students may design a course of study that does not focus solely on studio production. For example, students may concentrate course work outside the department in a research area or pursue a graduate emphasis (e.g., take courses in the Visual Studies PhD program or the Critical Theory Emphasis, both offered by the School of Humanities).
Every year, the department offers several lecture series, where artists, scholars, curators, critics, gallerists, and writers give lectures, engage in conversation, and conduct studio visits. These included the Graduate Colloquium (ART 220), the Visiting Artist Lecture Series (VALS), and the Catalyst Art Lecture Series (CALS). Organized by members of the faculty, the Colloquium invites speakers as part of a class where student engage in in-depth discussions in a rigorous academic setting, accompanied with supplementary readings and studio visits. Organized and run by a graduate student committee, VALS invites a slate of visiting artists and scholars relevant to graduate students' own research and practice to speak, often accompanied by studio visits. Organized by the undergraduate students, CALS coordinate noontime lectures of guests, often current M.F.A. students, to discuss their art practice, providing a mutually supportive link between the graduate and undergraduate student bodies. Together, these lecture series add to the dynamic exchange of ideas and scholarship that occurs inside and outside the classroom.
Exhibition Opportunities Graduate students have opportunities to exhibit in the University Art Galleries. First-year and second-year M.F.A.s participate in Open Studios and mount exhibitions to evaluate students' progress towards the degree. Third-year M.F.A.s mount a thesis exhibition in the spring and mount a second exhibition outside campus in the summer after graduation.
Teaching Opportunities Each graduate student is appointed to 6 Teaching Assistant and/or Teaching Associate positions during their three years in the program (two each year). Teaching Assistants are assigned to assist in the delivery of instruction under the tutelage and supervision of a faculty member. Some second- and third-year M.F.A.s are also appointed as Graduate Student Researchers, who are tasked with providing lab or office hours to assist students in accomplishing their work in the labs and class assignments. Some graduate students are appointed as Lecturers in the summer immediately following graduation from the program, while second-year M.F.A.s are appointed as T.A.s. These positions are all paid appointments.
Financial Packages and Fellowship Opportunities Graduate financial packages are very competitive. Successful domestic applicants typically receive full academic financial support. Successful International applicants also typically receive very generous academic financial support for the first year and full academic support for the second and third years. The Department of Art is committed to providing as much funding as possible to assist all students in the completion of the degree. Students also take advantage of the numerous grant and fellowship opportunities available through the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts, UCI Graduate Division , and other external agencies.
Facilities Facilities include photography laboratories (analog and digital); digital filmmaking and video production studios; sculpture laboratories for work in wood, metal and ceramics; and Mechatronics laboratory to support work in art and technology. There are also facilities to support work in digital media, painting, drawing, performance, new media, and curatorial studies. For more information, please go to Facilities .
Studio Spaces All M.F.A. candidates are provided with a studio space, either in the Contemporary Arts Center (single occupancy studios) or in the ACT Building (shared studios and single occupancy studios).
Location UCI is located in the heart of Orange County and forty-five miles south of Los Angeles, where our faculty, students, and alumni are active participants in a rich and multi-layered art community.

i just found this forum a few days ago and i'm freaking out with everyone else, lol. glad to know i'm not the only one tortured by the wait. one question, are there any other CNF applicants in this group? i've seen decisions being sent out for poetry and fiction, but it seems like there's radio silence on CNF and i'm getting nervous

Huge congrats!!! UC Irvine, correct? Did they call you?

Yes UC Irvine! I received a call from them today.
Congrats to the UC Irvine admits!
I've got Brown, Arizona, Virginia, Michigan, South Carolina, and Boston left (fingers crossed on one of them!). Aside Michigan, it looks like the schools tend to notify in March so I might be in for a dry spell. Not looking forward to that again. What's everyone else looking forward to? Wishing everyone the best of luck!

Not to dampen your outlook, but someone in the Draft group on Facebook received an acceptance for fiction at South Carolina on Monday. However, looking at previous results posted here, some people were notified much later / made it to waitlist well after the acceptances went out, so not all is lost!

May we both get good news from Michigan ahhhhhh!
Also for CNF people:
Someone on Draft just recently got an email acceptance to WashU if anyone applied there, too. Not sure how many people get in or how staggered the results are or anything just thought I’d let you guys know. Maybe it is more likely to be an email than a call for some schools?

Yeah, I applied for fiction but am assuming I should expect a rejection letter since I did not receive an email lol. Anyone know soon do they send out the rejection notifications after acceptances?

Last year looks like WashU sent the rejections 4 days after the acceptances/waitlists.
There's an acceptance to University of Montana for poetry up on the results board... Has there been anything posted on Draft about fiction?

first of all, a huge CONGRATS to those who have already been accepted to programs!! also congrats to those who may have already received some rejections-- you're f*cking rockstars.
it seems to me like there is an overwhelming amount of positivity on here and on Draft, with tons of acceptances posted already. what an exciting time!!
with my programs not sending out notifications until mid feb-march, i'm just enjoying watching everyone else hear back. i am a bit concerned, however, that my top program might notify later than usual this year. the letters of recommendation-- usually due two weeks after the application-- aren't required until over a full month after this year's due date. am i reading too much into this, or should i expect to hear back much later than expected? am i just being crazy? help

I tried to find info from past years but couldn’t. How wide is the spread of acceptances? Or am I really only hoping for a waitlist by now?

To be honest, I’m not sure how important the recommendations are, other than that you have people willing to give them. Probably the school can complete most of its review process without having them in, and then use the recs to sort out the top contenders. So you could still hear at the normal time. It’s really up to so many factors we’ll never be privy to.

i see two posts here that are well into march saying they were waitlisted after not hearing anything for a while
I am also wondering if anyone has heard news on Draft (or personally) about University of Montana's fiction decisions.

Haven’t seen anything so far for Montana fiction on draft.

Hi guys, I hope you're all doing well!! Another applicant waiting for results but hearing radio silence so far, lol the wait is killing me!
Has anyone heard of fiction acceptances for Virginia Tech? I saw there was a poetry acceptance but wasn't sure if there had been any fiction ones on draft or anything...

Announcing The Lizi Gilad Silver Memorial Scholarship
Lizi Gilad Silver: “I’ve lived my life feeling out of place geographically as well as physically, perpetually searching and asking where and what is home. The answer I’ve come to, over and over again, is literature. This is where I feel most at home. I find shelter in books and writing. A place beyond body, God, and land; my home is the written word.”
The first time I spoke with Lizi Gilad Silver (’14) was in early 2012. I’d just read her application to the MFA program and found myself in tears. In the course of an hour, reading her entrance essays, her poems, and her nonfiction, a picture began to develop of a woman who understood well that this tangible life is at best fleeting, that what matters ultimately is what we leave behind and that there is no greater legacy than the love we give, in whatever form. Because the quote above came from Lizi’s statement of personal history, which told the bold truth: that her time here was short, due to cystic fibrosis, and that she wanted to put it on the page. “I don’t want to be a great writer despite the challenges I’ve faced,” Lizi wrote. “Living in the fringes provides a better vantage point with which to observe life and drives me to write it down.” There was an immediacy in her words that made me pick up the phone, to tell her that I’d be lucky to teach her here at UCR, that we could help her, that we could give her a community of like-minded writers who would give her that sense of home, that sense of belonging, she seemed to desperately crave.
I remember it was the late afternoon when I dialed her number. When we hung up, two hours later, it was dark outside. We’d talked about everything – her writing, her illness, her life, her family’s journey to this country, her faith, which we shared, her dreams, her fears – and we laughed an awful lot. She also asked me probing questions about her work and what I saw in it. What I landed on that night – and what I land on now, over a decade in the dust, thumbing through her files on my computer – was that Lizi Gilad Silver’s writing was fierce. Uncompromising. Passionate. Empathetic. But above all else: Fierce.
She was also gentle and kind and compassionate. And as I got to know her and her work over the next two years….and then over the next several years, as she published her work, and eventually returned to the program to lead a seminar…what I found was that Lizi saw the world differently than anyone I’d ever known, that she had an easy way of talking to emerging writers, that she calmed them in a remarkable way, and also inspired vulnerability. Here was a person who wrote with such profound lucidity about the twists toward the end of life, the ones she kept managing to avoid, all the while knowing they were coming along at some turn, somewhere soon. In my memory, I can see her in the seminar she led, her tiny frame at the front of the room, the audience rapt, and thinking: This is her element. Though I was wrong, it turns out. Her element was in the act of being present, wherever she was. You found yourself in her presence, you had her, in full.
It's funny the things you remember when a person is gone. What I can tell you is that one of the last times we spoke she told me she wasn’t writing much anymore, because she didn’t know how much time she had left and she didn’t want to spend her time sitting alone. But believe me when I tell you, she was a writer, no matter how often her fingers touched a keyboard or put pen to paper.
“Your body is a magician for the way it heals. It’s also a magician for tricking you into believing in the everlasting strength and health of the moment,” Lizi wrote in one of her early essays. I’ve come back to it many time since Lizi passed away in June of 2023. “There will come a day when the curtain will lift and you’ll see your body for what it truly is: fragile, miraculous, momentary.” Lizi’s moment lasted for 45 years. Too brief by any measure. In her wake she left a beautiful family, dear friends, and so many words, including two amazing collections of poetry – Hyperion (Big Lucks) and Drip, Drip (Boatt Press) – and countless essays. And for those of us lucky to have known her, we have her memory, which is indeed a blessing.
And now, thanks to the profound generosity of a donor, we are pleased to announce the Lizi Gilad Silver Memorial Scholarship, to be given to a new or continuing student studying poetry or nonfiction. This annual scholarship in the amount of $10,000 will be awarded to a student who best represents the values, the determination, the compassion, the kindness, and above all else, the transcendent talent of Lizi Gilad Silver. Applications for the scholarship will be available October 15 th.
It is hard for me to think of Lizi now without thinking of that first conversation we had, twelve years ago. We were both so young then and all things seemed innately possible and infinite. I suppose that’s the gem of youth. You think you’ll have forever for everything. But the remarkable thing is that Lizi will always be here now, her words will be discovered, fresh and vibrant and needed, with every student who walks this path with us. And those students will learn of a fierce woman who believed passionately in the power, the sanctity, and the safety of the written world.
