Decimal Word Problem Worksheets

Decimal word problems are mathematical exercises or questions that involve the use of decimal numbers to solve real-world scenarios or situations. These problems require students to apply their understanding of decimals and mathematical operations to find solutions. They are a common component of math curricula and serve as an essential tool for reinforcing and enhancing math skills.

Decimal word problems come in various forms, covering a wide range of topics such as money, measurements, percentages, and more. For example, a typical decimal word problem might involve calculating the total cost of items when prices are expressed in decimal form or finding the percentage increase or decrease in a quantity over time. These problems provide a practical context for applying decimal arithmetic in everyday situations, making math more relatable and applicable to students’ lives.

One of the primary benefits of working on decimal word problems is their ability to improve math skills. First and foremost, they require students to have a solid understanding of decimal numbers, including place value and the four fundamental operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. By solving these problems, students reinforce their grasp of these essential mathematical concepts.

Decimal Word Problem Worksheet 1

This worksheet is a set of mathematical word problems designed to practice operations with decimal numbers. The problems cover various everyday scenarios that involve adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals, such as shopping, dividing slices of pizza, and calculating distances. Each problem requires the student to read the situation, understand the question being asked, and apply their knowledge of decimals to find the solution.

The worksheet aims to teach students practical applications of decimal arithmetic in real-world situations. It encourages the development of problem-solving skills by requiring students to interpret textual information and convert it into mathematical equations. Additionally, the worksheet helps students to improve their numerical fluency with decimals and understand the importance of precision in everyday calculations.

Decimal Word Problem Worksheet 2

This worksheet is a collection of word problems centered around decimal calculations, presenting a second series of exercises that build upon foundational skills with decimals. The problems are structured in a multiple-choice format, offering various scenarios that involve financial transactions, measurements of liquids, and counts of objects to challenge the student’s understanding of decimals. Each question demands careful reading and the application of mathematical concepts to choose the correct answer from the provided options.

The worksheet is designed to reinforce students’ skills in working with decimals in more complex situations, often involving multi-step calculations. It aims to enhance critical thinking by requiring students to choose the most logical answer from a set of possibilities, thereby testing not only their computational skills but also their reasoning and elimination skills. Moreover, the variety of contexts in the problems helps students appreciate the broad applicability of decimals in everyday life, from managing money to measuring quantities.

How to Solve Decimal Word Problems

  • Read the Problem Carefully: Begin by carefully reading the word problem to understand the context and what is being asked. Identify the key information, such as the values given and the unknowns.
  • Define Variables: Assign variables to the unknown quantities. Typically, you will use letters like ‘x’ or ‘y’ to represent these unknowns.
  • Translate Words into Math: Convert the information in the word problem into mathematical expressions or equations. Look for keywords that indicate mathematical operations (e.g., “add,” “subtract,” “multiply,” “divide,” “more than,” “less than”).
  • Set Up Equations: Use the information you’ve gathered to set up one or more equations that represent the relationships in the problem. You may need to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or a combination of these operations.
  • Solve the Equations: Solve the equations to find the values of the unknowns. This may involve performing arithmetic operations on decimals.
  • Check Your Solution: Ensure that your solution makes sense in the context of the problem. Does it answer the question asked in the word problem?
  • Present Your Answer: Write down your final answer in a clear and concise manner, often including units if applicable.

Let’s illustrate these steps with two examples:

A store is having a sale, and a $50 item is now 20% off. What is the sale price?

Step 1: Read the problem carefully. We need to find the sale price of an item after a 20% discount.

Step 2: Define Variables. Let ‘x’ represent the sale price.

Step 3: Translate Words into Math. We know that a 20% discount means we pay 80% of the original price. So, we can write this as an equation: 80% of $50 is equal to ‘x.’

Step 4: Set Up Equations. Convert the percentage to a decimal (80% = 0.80) and set up the equation: 0.80 * $50 = x.

Step 5: Solve the Equations. Calculate: 0.80 * $50 = $40.

Step 6: Check Your Solution. The sale price is $40, which makes sense in the context of the problem.

Step 7: Present Your Answer. The sale price is $40.

A recipe calls for 2/3 cup of sugar. If you want to make 1.5 times the recipe, how much sugar do you need?

Step 1: Read the problem carefully. We need to find the amount of sugar needed for 1.5 times the recipe.

Step 2: Define Variables. Let ‘x’ represent the amount of sugar needed.

Step 3: Translate Words into Math. The problem asks for 1.5 times the original amount of sugar, so we need to multiply the original amount by 1.5.

Step 4: Set Up Equations. Write the equation: (2/3) * 1.5 = x.

Step 5: Solve the Equations. Calculate: (2/3) * 1.5 = 1.0. So, you need 1.0 cups of sugar.

Step 6: Check Your Solution. Using 1.0 cups of sugar for 1.5 times the recipe is reasonable.

Step 7: Present Your Answer. You need 1.0 cups of sugar.

Don’t worry!

You’re in good company because we can all relate to struggling with word problems and wondering how to begin.

Steps In Solving Word Problems

The good thing is that there are steps and tools that you can use that will help to read word problems effectively and boost your confidence.

All you have to do is remember the FACTS !

how to solve a word problem

How To Solve A Word Problem

  • Focus on what you know and not on what you don’t know. Sometimes just looking at word problems can overwhelm us even before we’ve read a single word. The key to problem-solving, especially problem solving with decimals, is to focus on what you know.
  • Actively participate . This means you need to circle or underline keywords or phrases, write down important information that the problem is presenting. Once you write down or mark up the word problem, you will quickly realize that you are always given a ton of information to work with, now you just need to …
  • Choose a method and go for it! What keywords pop out at you? Does it tell you to add or subtract decimals? Multiply, divide, or compare? Maybe you need to approximate so that rounding may be the best method. Or do you need to use more than one method or operation to calculate the correct answer? What is the problem asking, and what is provided that will help you get there?
  • And once you’ve chosen your method, all that’s left is to try it ! Don’t give up, even if it’s challenging. The best thing you can do is try! So, try your method of choice and locate the answer you need.
  • Lastly, you need to Scrutinize your work . All this means is that you need to ask yourself, “does my answer make sense?”

Step-by-Step Example

Let’s look at an example.

Helen’s monthly salary is $5463.79.

Her monthly expenses are as follows:

  • Rent $2,700
  • Transportation $715.12
  • Food $650.50
  • Utilities $732.48
  • Phone & Cable $95.96
  • Insurance $156.27

After paying all of her expenses, how much money does Helen have left?

First, we FOCUS on what we know, and we become ACTIVE readers by marking up our problem and writing down keywords and phrases.

words and phrases to math symbols

Words And Phrases To Math Symbols

Now we CHOOSE our method, which will involve two steps:

  • Adding to find the sum of all of Helen’s monthly bills.
  • Subtracting to see the amount leftover.

And finally, we ask ourselves, does our answer make SENSE ?

Yes, Helen has $413.46 remaining after paying all of her bills.

This video will walk you through countless examples of problem-solving using decimals, just like the one above, so that you can attack word problems (like those on IXL ) with confidence!

How to Perform Operations of Decimals: Word Problems

Greetings, budding mathematicians! Today, we're going to jump into an adventure with decimals. Working with decimals is a fundamental math skill that you'll use in many aspects of life, from managing money to measuring distances.

How to Perform Operations of Decimals: Word Problems

Introduction to Decimal Operations

First things first, let’s talk about decimals. A decimal is a way of representing a number that’s less than one, or a number that’s a whole and a fraction together. When you work with decimals, the same rules apply as when you’re working with whole numbers, but the decimal point plays a crucial role.

There are four major operations that you can perform on decimals:

  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication

Now, let’s tackle some word problems involving decimal operations.

Step-By-Step Guide to Solving Word Problems with Decimal Operations

Step 1: understand the problem.

First and foremost, carefully read through the problem. Identify what you know and what you need to find out.

Step 2: Plan the Solution

Next, decide which operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) will help you solve the problem. This will depend on what the problem is asking.

Step 3: Carry Out the Operation

Perform the operation on the decimals. Remember to align the decimal points when you’re adding or subtracting, and apply the rules for multiplication and division of decimals correctly.

Step 4: Check the Answer

Finally, check if your answer makes sense in the context of the problem.

Consider this problem: Laura bought \(2.3\) kilograms of apples and \(1.5\) kilograms of grapes. How many kilograms of fruit did she buy in total?

Step 1: Understand that you know the weight of apples and grapes separately, and you need to find the total weight.

Step 2: Realize that to find the total, you need to add the weights together.

Step 3: Add the weights: \(2.3\ kg + 1.5\ kg = 3.8\ kg\).

Step 4: Check that the answer makes sense. Laura bought \(2.3\ kg\) of apples and \(1.5\ kg\) of grapes, so it makes sense that she bought \(3.8\ kg\) in total.

Keep practicing with different word problems, and you’ll get the hang of decimal operations in no time. Remember, the more you practice, the better you’ll get. Happy calculating!

Some problems might require students to make decisions based on decimal calculations, enhancing their ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-life decision-making situations.

Educators often use decimal word problem worksheets as a part of their curriculum to assess students’ comprehension of decimal concepts and their ability to apply these concepts in practical contexts. These worksheets can be tailored to different grade levels, ensuring that students progressively build their skills as they advance in their mathematical education.

What Are Decimal Word Problems?

Decimal word problems are mathematical problems that involve decimal numbers and are presented in the form of worded descriptions or narratives. These problems require the application of decimal operations and concepts to find solutions.

Decimal word problems can cover a wide range of topics and real-life situations, including money, measurements, ratios, percentages, and data analysis. These problems often require understanding the relationships between decimals, performing calculations with decimals, and interpreting the results in the context of the problem.

Here are a few examples of decimal word problems across different contexts:

Money – “Mary went to the store and bought three items. The first item cost $8.95, the second item cost $12.75, and the third item cost $6.50. How much did Mary spend in total?”

Measurements – “A rectangular field has a length of 12.5 meters and a width of 8.75 meters. What is the area of the field?”

Ratios – “In a class of 30 students, 12 students are boys. What is the ratio of boys to girls in the class?”

Percentages – “A shirt is on sale for 25% off its original price of $40. What is the sale price of the shirt?”

Data Analysis – “In a survey of 100 people, 45% said they prefer tea over coffee. How many people prefer tea?”

Problems With Solutions

Problem 1 (Easy): Sara went shopping and bought three items. The prices of these items were $12.95, $5.75, and $8.50. What is the total cost of her purchase?

Solution: To find the total cost, simply add up the prices of the three items:

Total Cost = $12.95 + $5.75 + $8.50

Total Cost = $27.20

So, Sara’s total purchase cost is $27.20.

Problem 2 (Intermediate): A recipe calls for 1.25 cups of sugar. If you want to make 4 batches of the recipe, how many cups of sugar will you need in total?

Solution: To find the total amount of sugar needed for 4 batches, multiply the amount for one batch (1.25 cups) by 4:

Total Sugar = 1.25 cups/batch × 4 batches

Total Sugar = 5 cups

So, you will need 5 cups of sugar in total for 4 batches of the recipe.

Problem 3 (Difficult): A company’s quarterly revenue increased by 18.75% from the first quarter to the second quarter and then decreased by 12.5% from the second quarter to the third quarter. If the third-quarter revenue was $225,000, what was the revenue in the first quarter?

Solution: Let R be the revenue in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the revenue increased by 18.75%, which can be represented as 1 + 0.1875 = 1.1875 times the first-quarter revenue.

In the third quarter, the revenue decreased by 12.5%, which can be represented as 1 – 0.125 = 0.875 times the second-quarter revenue.

Given that the third-quarter revenue is $225,000, we can set up an equation to find R:

0.875 * (1.1875 * R) = $225,000

First, calculate the value inside the parentheses:

1.1875 * R = $225,000 / 0.875

Now, divide both sides by 1.1875 to solve for R:

R = ($225,000 / 0.875) / 1.1875

R = $225,000 / 0.875 / 1.1875

R = $225,000 / 1.046875

R = $214,736.84

So, the revenue in the first quarter was approximately $214,736.84.

It is essential to pay attention to units of measurement, decimal place values, and any specific instructions or constraints given in the problem. Regular practice with decimal word problems will help improve your problem-solving skills and build confidence in working with decimal numbers in real-life scenarios.

Grade School Math

[blog post] [paper].

State-of-the-art language models can match human performance on many tasks, but they still struggle to robustly perform multi-step mathematical reasoning. To diagnose the failures of current models and support research, we're releasing GSM8K, a dataset of 8.5K high quality linguistically diverse grade school math word problems. We find that even the largest transformer models fail to achieve high test performance, despite the conceptual simplicity of this problem distribution.

decimal word problems problem solving

Dataset Details

GSM8K consists of 8.5K high quality grade school math problems created by human problem writers. We segmented these into 7.5K training problems and 1K test problems. These problems take between 2 and 8 steps to solve, and solutions primarily involve performing a sequence of elementary calculations using basic arithmetic operations (+ - / *) to reach the final answer. A bright middle school student should be able to solve every problem.

The raw data files can be found in:

  • grade_school_math/data/train.jsonl
  • grade_school_math/data/test.jsonl

Each line of those files corresponds to a single grade school math problem, saved as a json dictionary (with a "question" key and an "answer" key). The answer is formatted such that it uses calculation annotations and so that the final numeric solution is the final line of the solution, preceded by #### .

Calculation Annotations

Our models frequently fail to accurately perform calculations. Although larger models make fewer arithmetic mistakes than smaller models, this remains a common source of errors. To mitigate this issue, we train our models to use a calculator by injecting calculation annotations into the training set. At training time, we simply finetune on this language data as is. At test time, a calculator will override sampling when the model chooses to use these annotations. An example implementation of the calculator sampling can be found in calculator.py .

If you would like to remove the calculator annotations, simply remove any string that starts with << and ends with >> .

Solution Extracting

To extract the final numeric solution for a particular question, simply parse the completion to extract the numeric value immediately following the #### token. Some example python code to do so is shown in dataset.py:is_correct .

Socratic Dataset

During our research, we also investigated a modified solution format that injects automatically generated "Socratic subquestions" before each step. Although we ultimately did not use this format for any experiments in the paper, we make this data available to anyone who is interested.

We show an example below, with the socratic subquestions in bold:

We generated each Socratic subquestion by conditioning on each ground truth (contractor-provided) step in a solution, using a model specifically finetuned for this task (on around 800 examples). To construct the full Socratic dataset, each step in the solution was prefixed by the model-generated Socratic subquestion. Steps were otherwise left untouched.

These data files can be found in:

  • grade_school_math/data/train_socratic.jsonl
  • grade_school_math/data/test_socratic.jsonl

View Model Solutions

For each test question, we provide solutions generated from 6B finetuning, 6B verification, 175B finetuning and 175B verification. This data can be found in:

  • grade_school_math/data/example_model_solutions.jsonl

To view these results problem-by-problem, run:

Note: These model-generated samples used a slightly older version of the calculator. Previous implementation bugs led to calculator failures in roughly 1% of model samples. Those issues have been fixed in the codebase, but since the samples have not been regenerated, occasional calculation errors are present.

Please use the below BibTeX entry to cite this dataset:

We present a basic example of training a GPT2 sized model and using the calculator in the sampling process. We include this code for illustrative purposes only. This pipeline was not used for any experiments in the paper.

Training a Model

Sampling from the Model

The core calculator sampling logic can be found in calculator.py:sample . Note that this code is inefficient as implemented. Specifically, the function does not support batches, and does not cache activations from previous tokens.
