macOS has a few offerings available for transcribing audio, some more advanced than others

Transcribing audio can be an absolute nightmare of work, having to pause, replay, rewind, and double-check every syllable of every word said in an audio recording. A live speech can be even worse, as you may not want or be able to ask someone to repeat themselves infinitely. Whatever your reasons may be, there are multiple options available to you for transcribing speech on a Mac .

Transcribe Audio with Siri

The option available to you right out of the box is Siri . You can use Siri on any Mac to transcribe a live stream of audio being fed through your microphone. However, you will need to enable the feature in the first place.

How to enable dictation with Siri:

• Open System Settings
• Enter the Keyboard settings menu
• Beneath Dictation , tick the option to enable dictation
• Set your preferred language
• Choose your shortcut for enabling dictation, which will be pressing the Control key twice by default.

With dictation through Siri enabled, in certain instances on your Mac where you can type, you can now press your shortcut and Siri will begin transcribing for you. Notable exceptions to where Siri may type for you include within certain web pages within non- Safari browsers, such as Google Docs in Google Chrome.

As accuracy goes, Siri can usually figure out what you're saying, and the dictation holds up well across multiple languages. Where Siri really falls behind here is in punctuation, as Siri will transcribe most speech as one continuous string of text. While using Siri can be convenient to avoid typing a large block of text, if you don't want to specify every piece of punctuation out loud, you may be better off using an AI-based transcription app.

AI-based transcription

Two AI-based transcription services you can use on your Mac are Otter.ai and Whisper Transcription. Both services allow users to record and transcribe audio themselves, or import audio files to be transcribed. Additionally, both services have paid, premium options that allow you to link certain apps, such as Slack or Zoom, to transcribe audio from calls.

With both applications, the clearer an audio file you provide, the better your results will be. With transcribing audio you input live, both apps do very well. Generally, both applications perform well in getting words exactly right and nailing punctuation. However, there are exclusive pros to each service.

Whisper, which is made by OpenAI, has the distinct advantage of allowing you to transcribe audio in almost any language you may ever need to. For the time being, Otter can only transcribe English. The benefits of better accuracy and accurate punctuation that the service already holds over Siri hold up across other languages as well. If you're looking to transcribe non-English audio accurately, Whisper is definitely the best option available on Mac. The Whisper Transcription app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store .

The key advantage Otter holds is its slant towards use in business. Audio recorded in Otter can differentiate speakers, in addition to timestamping a recording. Otter also offers a real-time feed of the transcription, which does come out surprisingly accurate. The transcription given after Otter has some time to crunch on the audio is even more accurate, especially with punctuation.

One final option available to Mac Users for audio transcription is Audio Hijack. Audio Hijack is primarily an audio recording app, but it also has transcription functionality powered by OpenAI's Whisper Transcription. Audio Hijack can record and, in turn, transcribe any audio playing on your Mac.

Using OpenAI's Whisper, Audio Hijack is able to provide accurate transcriptions. The only issue some users may encounter using Audio Hijack is installing the app itself. Installation requires you to modify settings in your Mac's Recovery mode, which may be a tad far for some users.

Use These Special Siri Commands When Dictating Text On iPhone Or iPad [iOS Tips]

Speech to text dictation is getting better by leaps and bounds, and Apple’s Siri on iOS is one of the best implementations of the technology. While you may have known that you could punctuate your dictation by just speaking it aloud (comma) you may not know that there are some more commands that you can use to further refine your dictation performance, allowing you to write stuff just by speaking it, and no one will know the difference.

Here are some of the better ones.

When dictating, say “All Caps” to capitalize all of the next word you dictate. So, “All Caps Happy Tuna” will type, HAPPY tuna. If you just want to capitalize the first letter of the next word, say, “Caps,” and Siri will take care of it for you. “Upper Case” will capitalize the next character, which can be handy when spelling out acronyms. You can also just say “Caps On” to enable caps lock, and “Caps Off” to disable it.

If you say, “Numeral” and then the number, Siri will type the digit, rather than the spelled out letter. So, “Numeral five” will get you “5,” not “five.”

If you want a new paragraph, say, “New Paragraph,” and if you just want a new line, say “New Line” instead. If you want to prevent a space, just say so, with “No Space,” and Siri won’t stick a space between your last word and the next one you dictate. To wit, “hot No Space dog” will net you a “hotdog.”

Use “No Space On” to turn off spaces entirely, which is helpful when dictating a password made of typical words, for example. To turn that mode off, simply say, “No Space Off.” Done!

How To Use Text-to-Speech on iPhone and iPad

• The Text-to-Speech feature is available in Accessibility settings in iOS and iPadOS.
• Speak Selection allows you to highlight text which you want to be read aloud while the Speak Screen feature reads out everything on the screen.
• Once you enable the Speak Screen feature, you can ask Siri to “Speak Screen” and it will do the needful.

There’s no denying that reading is a good habit. But, reading from a screen might not be ideal as it increases your daily screen time and also causes vision-related issues. A simple solution to this problem is to use the Text-to-Speech feature. It will read aloud the text on the screen and you can customize everything from the language, speed, accent, and more. Read along to learn how to use Text-to-Speech on iPhone and iPad. 

Enable Speak Selection To Use Text-to-Speech on iPhone and iPad

The Speak Selection is an Accessibility feature in iOS and iPadOS. Using this feature, your device can read aloud text that you select and you get total control over it. The Speak Selection feature is useful for people who can manually highlight the text that they want to convert to speech. However, if you have problems related to vision, we suggest using the Speak Screen feature which we’ve covered later in the article.

You can also tap and hold on text messages in Messages, WhatsApp, etc., and then select the Speak option to use the Text-to-Speech feature. If you don’t see the Speak option right away, it might be hidden behind the More option. Navigating to the Speak feature after holding on text will be a similar process in most applications. 

Use Text-to-Speech in Safari Browser

Don’t want to strain your eyes while reading a super interesting blog online? You can use the in-built Text-to-Speech feature in Safari on iPhone and iPad. It will read aloud the entire blog from the beginning to the end without any interruptions. 

• Open the Safari Browser on your iPhone or iPad and head to the website or webpage you want to be read out aloud to you. 
• Tap the AA icon located in the bottom left corner of the address bar. 
• Tap the Listen to Page option in the pop-up menu and your device will start reading out aloud the contents of the website/webpage. 
• If you want to adjust the speed, rewind, skip, pause, or end listening to the page, tap the Listen to Page icon located at the bottom left corner and a pop-up will display all these options. 

Enable Speak Screen To Use Text-to-Speech for PDFs, eBooks, And More

If you have vision-related problems, it might not be the best idea to spend a lot of time on your iPhone or iPad. But, many of us use these devices to read news, books, research papers, etc. In this case, you can enable and use the Speak Screen feature which will convert all the text on the screen to speech. Here’s how to use the Speak Screen feature to convert Text-to-Speech on iPhone and iPad.

• Open the Settings app on your iPhone and head to the Accessibility option. 
• Tap the Spoken Content option. 

• Now, open any PDF files, eBook, etc . on your iPhone and iPad. 
• Swipe up from the top using two fingers and the Text-to-Speech feature will start reading out aloud the contents on the screen. 

You can use this feature on most apps on your iPhone and iPad. It might take a while to get used to swiping down from the top of the screen with two fingers. You might even fail many attempts, but will eventually get used to the process. 

Ask Siri To To Use Speak Screen Text-to-Speech on iPhone and iPad

Swiping down using two fingers to activate the Speak Screen feature is not very convenient. Moreover, you might even accidentally open the Notification Center or Control Panel while trying to do so. Therefore, a simpler method to activate the Speak Screen feature is to ask Siri to do it. 

• Enable the Speak Screen toggle on the next page. 
• Now, open any app of your choice where you want to use the Text-to-Speech feature to read aloud text. 
• Activate Siri and say, “ Hey Siri, Speak Screen. ”
• Siri will start reading out text on the screen. You can control the speed, play, pause, and rewind using the Speech Controller .  

Customize Text-to-Speech Voice and Speed

Don’t like the way the Text-to-Speech voice sounds? Is it too fast to understand or so slow that it takes forever to read aloud a single sentence? Don’t worry if you’re facing any of these problems. Because, you have total control over these factors and can easily change them. Here’s how you can customize the Text-to-Speech settings on your iPhone and iPad. 

• Select a Language of your choice from the list of available options. 
• Now, tap on a voice under the preferred accent. 
• On the next screen tap the Play button to listen to that voice. 

• Go back to the Spoken Content page.

How to Get Siri to Transcribe Your Requests in iOS 14

In ‌iOS 14, Apple's Siri voice assistant got a major update that introduced a more compact interface, with ‌Siri‌ appearing as an animating orb at the bottom of the screen instead of taking over the whole display.

Beyond Siri: Dictation tricks for the iPhone and iPad

You’re probably familiar with using Siri to make calls on your iPhone, as well as to   open apps on your iOS device, get information, and set up appointments . But you may be less familiar with iOS’s other dictation feature, the one that lets you talk to your iOS device while it converts your words into text.

I’ve long used dictation on my iPhone, because I have fat thumbs and find the keyboard too slow to use. As long as I’m in a not-too-noisy environment, it works quite well. I have to make corrections at times, but I can dictate long emails, short text messages, and even use dictation to enter search terms in Safari or to enter text in text fields on webpages. Better still, in my early tests, dictation in iOS 7 seems much more accurate. Here’s how you can use dictation on an iOS device and save a lot of time typing.

Turn on dictation

First, you need to make sure dictation is turned on. To do this, go to Settings > General > Siri , and then turn Siri on. Even if you don’t want to use Siri’s personal assistant features, you need to turn it on for speech recognition to work. You can choose which language you’re using here, which is especially useful if you speak with an accent. I live in the United Kingdom, but since I’m American, I set the language in Siri’s preferences to English (United States) . However, I set my Region settings to reflect UK dates and times. (Tap General and then International ).

Dictate anywhere…almost

You can dictate anywhere in iOS where you can enter text. For example, you can compose emails, dictate texts, and even dictate search terms in Safari’s search field. Any time you see the small microphone icon next to the spacebar on the iOS keyboard, dictation is available. Just tap anyplace you can type text, and then tap the microphone icon to start dictating. When you’re finished, tap Done  and then wait for your words to be processed. It can take a few seconds for text to appear.

Stay in the zone:  If you’re using iOS 7, when you begin talking, you’ll see a feedback pane with a wavering line showing the volume of your speech. The louder you speaker, the greater the amplitude of the wave. (If you’re using iOS 6, or you’re using an app that hasn’t been updated for iOS 7, you’ll see a microphone; as you speak, the microphone will fill with purple light.)

Talk into the microphone: You don’t need to speak very loudly; but you should keep your iPhone close to your mouth, especially if you’re outdoors. There are two microphones at the bottom of the iPhone, and a single microphone on iPads, located at the top of the device. It’s not easy to speak directly into the iPad mic while looking at the screen. Speak into the tiny hole at the top of your tablet.

You’ll find dictation in noisy environments works much better with an iPhone, because it’s easier to speak close to the microphone. The iPhone also has a noise-canceling mic, which filters out background noises. You might find that the Apple earbuds that come with an iPhone—which have an inline mic—offer better speech recognition, as do third-party headphones with mics, as long as you hold them fairly close to your mouth.

Dictate when connected to Wi-Fi: Dictation to an iOS device requires that your voice be sent to a server, where it is recognized and transcribed, and then sent back to your iOS device. For this reason, dictating to an iOS device works best when you’re using Wi-Fi; it also works well with a 3G connection; but anything slower is hit or miss, in my experience.

Dictate efficiently

If you’re familiar with dictating into software such as Nuance Software’s $160  Dragon Dictate , you already have an idea of how to dictate into an iPhone or iPad. But some desktop techniques don’t work. Here are a few tips to make dictation more efficient.

Speak clearly: You don’t need to speak especially slowly, but speaking too quickly will lead to errors. The general idea is to talk like a newscaster: Enunciate, but don’t exaggerate.

Don’t say too much: Your voice has to be sent to a remote server, so keep your dictation segments under 30 seconds. (Longer than that might be too much for a 3G connection.)

Take advantage of autocorrect: While you can’t correct mistakes in iOS dictation by voice, you will occasionally see words that iOS thinks might be incorrect. They appear with dotted blue lines underneath them. Tap an underlined word or phrase, and you’ll see one or more options you can choose from.

Speak punctuation and symbols: To include punctuation in your dictation, you need to say “comma,” “period,” “hyphen,” and so on. Watch out for language differences. For instance, if you’re using British English, you need to say “full stop” instead of “period.”

You can say “new line” to dictate a return character, and “new paragraph” to add two returns. You say “apostrophe” for a possessive noun, such as “Jerry Garcia apostrophe S guitar,” for Jerry Garcia’s guitar .

You’ll also say things like “dollar sign,” “euro sign,” and “pound sterling sign” to get type the corresponding symbols.

When you want to capitalize a word, say “cap.” If you’re sending a message to someone about a movie preference, for example, you might say “I’d like to watch cap lord of the cap rings.”

Use acronyms with care: You can dictate some acronyms, but not all. You’ll find over time which ones work and which don’t. When spelling acronyms, make sure to pause between letters just enough for them to be discrete.

Add emoticons: Do you want to type smileys? It’s easier to dictate them than to switch to the number keyboard. Just say “smiley,” “winky,” or “frowny,” for 🙂 , 😉 , or 🙁 .

Proofread what you dictate: While some errors will be obvious, and other misinterpretations may have blue dotted lines highlighting them, there will be typos—or, more correctly, speech-os.

As you get used to dictating into your iPhone or iPad, you’ll figure out the right cadence and volume to get the most precise recognition. If you need to type a lot on an iOS device, try using dictation. Whether you use it for text messages or emails, it may save you a lot of time.

Once the download is complete, you don't need a Wi-Fi connection to use Voice Control. It's recommended that you connect to Wi-Fi before you turn on Voice Control for the first time.

Voice Control isn't available in all countries or regions. Voice Control uses the Siri speech recognition engine for U.S. English only.

How to turn on Voice Control

Go to Settings and select Accessibility.

How to use Voice Control

When Voice Control is turned on, you can speak commands just like you would perform an action by touch. For example, to access Spotlight Search on the Home screen, say “Swipe down.” Or to access long-press menus for certain apps, say “Long press [app name].” Voice Control doesn’t change how your device responds to touch.

To activate listening, you can say "Go to sleep" or "Wake up." The listening feature doesn't turn off, but puts the microphone to sleep until you wake your device with a command.

How to interact with your screen

To interact with items on your screen, speak an action, such as “Tap” then speak the name of the item. For example, say “Tap Accessibility.”

If you’re not sure what the name of the item is, you can say, “Show names” to display an overlay with the item names.

Show numbers

If an item doesn’t have a name, or if you would prefer to use numbers instead, you can say, “Show Numbers” to display numeric tags for each item on your screen.

For interactions that require more precision or spacial referencing, you can say, “Show grid” to display a numbered grid overlay. Speaking a number on the grid will enlarge that area of the grid and present a new set of numbers, which will make it easier for you to select an item. The grid can also be used when dragging items on screen to identify where you would like to drop them, or when performing gesture or freehand actions.

After speaking your next command, the grid will disappear. To keep the grid onscreen for multiple commands, say “Show grid continuously.”

Here are a few other things you can do to interact with your screen

To hide overlays, say “Hide [names, numbers, grid].”

To repeat actions, such as taps and swipes, say “Repeat that.” You can also specify how many times to repeat an action. For example, you can say “Swipe right. Repeat that three times.”

To return to a previous screen or menu, say, “Go back.”

How to customize Voice Control settings

You can customize several settings under Voice Control. Here’s a list of some of the settings you can adjust:

Language: Voice Control uses the the primary language that you have set on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Customize Commands: Shows you the full list of available commands, allows you to turn commands off, or create customized commands.

Vocabulary: Allows you to teach Voice Control new words.

Show Confirmation: Displays a visual confirmation at the top of the screen when a command is recognized.

Play Sound: Plays a sound effect when a command is recognized.

Show Hints: Displays dynamic suggestions for what you can say. These appear automatically after instructions are spoken that are similar, but don’t quite match the system commands.

Overlay: Allows you to set a continuous onscreen overlay with numbers, names, or the grid.

Attention Aware: On devices with Face ID, this setting allows you to turn listening on or off based on whether or not you’re looking at the screen. This is helpful when using multiple devices with Voice Control.

But if you have any of the following devices or later, you can use "Hey Siri" without needing an external power source. These devices have hardware that can listen for "Hey Siri" in a battery-efficient manner.

When you go through the initial setup process on your iPhone or iPad after purchasing (or after a major OS update), Apple gives you chance to set up the "Hey Siri" feature. If you previously skipped that option, it's not too late to set it up in the Settings app. Here's how.

First, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

In Settings, tap "Siri & Search."

In Siri & Search, select "Listen for 'Hey Siri'."

After tapping the switch, a new "Set Up 'Hey Siri'" window will pop up. Tap "Continue."

After that, you're ready to go. You can safely exit Settings, and Siri will always be listening for your "Hey Siri" command by voice from now on.

How to Use "Hey Siri"

Using "Hey Siri," you can ask Siri to perform any task you'd normally ask Siri for . Just say "Hey Siri" out loud, then state your request. Here are just a handful of examples.

• "Hey Siri, set a timer for five minutes."

Siri, the popular virtual assistant, has taken on another role and it's in the realm of content creation. Siri voice generators allow creators on all platforms to make a voice over that sounds similar in their videos.

You've likely noticed this edit taking off on TikTok. The text-to-speech feature converts text to a voiceover and you might hear something unexpected. The occasional flubbed words and monotone narration make videos 10x funnier. In addition to the humor, this feature improves accessibility so more viewers can enjoy the video.

With the help of a free Siri voice generator, you can add voice overs to your videos . In this article, I'll show you how to use a Siri voice generator using a free online video and audio editor called Kapwing.

There are several Siri voice generators you can use, but in this example I opted for Kapwing. This website is free to use, lets you download the file as an MP3 or as an audio overlay on a video, and has a full editing timeline for simple customization. Let's jump into the tutorial.

Step One: Add a Text Layer

Head to the Kapwing website and click "Get Started." You can choose to upload a video or import a video layer from YouTube, or you can start from scratch if you want the stand-alone siri voice. Then, use the Text button in the left side menu to add a text layer.

Kapwing works well on iPhones, Android, and all computers, so feel free to use it from any device. On an iPhone, add a text layer and double tap to enter your own words. You can type a short phrase for the robot voice to read out or a whole paragraph.

Creators can also tell a story using the Siri text generator. Add multiple text layers and type what you want to appear at each moment in your video. Then, use the timeline to time out the text layers on the timeline, crafting an original Siri story or narrating what's happening in a video.

Step Two: Make Text Layer into Speech

Once you've typed the words that you want to say, select the text layer. In the action menu, you will see a prominent button that says "Text to Speech." Use that button and choose a voice - "Female American" or "Male American" - to make your text layer into a Siri voice layer.

Notice that your text layer will grow in the timeline with a waveform audio shape attached to it.

Play the video to listen to what the siri voice will sound like and toggle between the Male and Female voice to try different sounds. If you want to delete the text layer, right click (or long press on mobile) to detach the audio layer from the text layer and delete the text layer from the canvas.

You can create a pause by putting space between two Siri voice layers in the timeline. Or, emphasize words by increasing the volume of the layer; drag the volume slider up past 100%. Creators can also change the speaking rate, making the Siri voice faster or slower, by incrementing or decrementing the speed.

If you want to edit the text layer to change what the Siri voice says, just double tap the layer. You'll see a warning that you will revert back to a text-only layer, but you can re-make the text to speech layer after the update.

Step Three: Export Voice as MP3 or MP4

When you're happy with the audio, you can choose to export the Siri voice as an MP3 (audio only file) or as an MP4. Tap the dropdown arrow next to the Export button to choose "Export as MP3" instead. After you confirm, Kapwing will process your video and give you the sound file of your siri voice.

Alternatively, you can choose to download your file as an MP4 video file. This is ideal if you want to publish a video on TikTok, for example.

Step Four: Publish and Share

With Apple Intelligence, iPhone users will finally get a better Siri

Will Siri finally become useful? That’s the promise Apple laid out today at its “Glowtime” event , where the company introduced its iPhone 16 lineup — its first new iPhones to ship with AI-powered functionality, courtesy of Apple Intelligence and, later, a partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI.

While consumers won’t get the full impact of the Siri upgrade until Apple Intelligence launches, Apple promises it will upend the user experience by making the iPhone not just a small computer that fits in your pocket, but also a small personal assistant powered by AI.

In the near term, Siri will see more immediate improvements, including the ability to type questions to Siri instead of speaking and to engage in more natural conversations — including the occasional stumble — thanks to its richer language understanding. You’ll also be able to change the wake word for Siri through a new accessibility feature.

Developers are gaining access to SiriKit, which allows them to integrate Apple Intelligence-powered features into their own apps, the way that Apple has integrated Siri with first-party apps like Calendar, Mail, Notes, Safari, Files, Contacts, Voice Memos, Photos, Books, Freeform, Files and others.

Even Apple’s AirPods are getting an upgraded Siri experience, as users will be able to nod or shake their heads in response to Siri announcements.

To showcase its new AI functionality, Siri will receive a cosmetic makeover in iOS 18. Instead of a glowing orb at the bottom of the screen when activated, Siri will light up the edges of the iPhone in an eye-catching illumination. This will appear when Siri is active on the iPhone, iPad, or CarPlay.

Unlike new iPhones, Apple Intelligence — meaning the best of Siri’s upgrade — will be a slower rollout. Apple says the first set of features will be available in beta next month, with more features rolling out in the coming months. U.S. English will initially be supported, followed by localized English for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.K. Sometime next year, it will reach users who speak Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish before expanding to others.

Other Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools, Mail and Notifications summaries, and a Clean Up tool in Photos will also arrive in beta starting next month across iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.

Apple Intelligence will superpower Siri

When Apple Intelligence arrives, Siri will be able to help with questions and commands that deal with its understanding of you and your needs. It will gain a better understanding of your personal context, allowing you to reference things like a song you streamed, an email you reviewed, a calendar appointment, or a text, for instance, instead of only responding to simple commands like “call Mom.” That means you’ll be able to ask Siri about your meeting and what the weather will be like at the meeting’s location, too, or do something like instructing it to send an email you had drafted.

“With Siri’s personal context, understanding and action capabilities, you’ll be able to simply say, ‘Send Erica the photos from Saturday’s barbecue,’ and Siri will dig up the photos and send them right off with new ways to express yourself and read them memories, along with tools to help you prioritize and focus so you can get more done,” noted Apple SVP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, at today’s iPhone announcement. “Apple intelligence is going to transform so much of what you do with iPhone. Apple Intelligence will be available as a free software update,” he said.

Siri will also be able to offer tech support, as its understanding of your Apple products, features, and functionality will be improved.

It will be able to help you in other ways an assistant could, too, by way of its on-screen awareness.

For instance, you’ll be able to tell Siri to add a friend’s address to their contact card after they text it to you, or ask it to edit a photo with a filter or drop that photo into another app. If a friend texts you about a new album, you can say “play that.”

You could also add a set of photos to an album using Siri, or send them to a friend. And you can have Siri summarize a transcript of a recording.

On iPhone 16 Pro models , Apple suggests that Siri’s new capabilities will be great for photographers, who will be able to ask Siri to pull up a specific shot from their library and then apply the Edit to the photo in an app like Darkroom, or even use Siri to quickly get suggestions on “how to enhance the space and achieve their vision,” the company said on Monday.

The bigger Siri upgrade, however, may not come directly from Apple, but from OpenAI, announced earlier this year at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference .

With the arrival of Apple Intelligence, Siri users will have the option to pose their questions related to “world knowledge” to ChatGPT instead of being frustratingly directed to the web for those questions it can’t answer.

The partnership with OpenAI helps Apple get ahead in the AI race, where it’s perceived to have fallen behind, but without taking on the responsibility or the reputational hit that comes from when AI gets things wrong or hallucinates an answer.

In time, Apple is expected to announce more AI partners as well.
