The library is astounding, which contains an enormous assortment of law books, diaries, digital books and lawful database. There is no consideration given to the upkeep of the kid's lodging. There is no position to deal with the inn tidiness. The Rector doesn't visit the lodging for the entire semester. Restrooms and latrines of the inn are the most terrible that anybody will discover in any inn in the state. There are no entryways in the latrines and taps are broken. The inn was painted as of late on the grounds that the NAAC panel was going to visit the school for assessment.

GENETIC INTERACTION

Almost all the lectures have done post doctoral in their respective area. With a exception of few every professor are suitable for the course work and research purposes. The course work for PhD have approximately 20 lectures per subject. The lectures does not have any relevant industry experience certificates.

College Events

There are many cultural, technical and management festivals hold throughout the year. Students from every department and every course are welcomed to join in the programs. There are 2 big grounds where all the functions are held. The college management also help the students.

Overall all it was a good experience

They make us focus on the course very well, which makes it easy for us in exams. The faculty is strict but that helps you to be a better person. They help with any questions that you may have regarding work. I had my famous professor who always helped me in my comp, edition of course, and was always available.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The average fee charged by the college for my course. They have made the fee structure in such a manner that middle-class people can easily afford it without any strain and many do not have to take loans. We are also given extra time to pay the fee to incase a student is facing some financial issues.

Akshay's Review On Institute Of Life Sciences - [ILS], Bhubaneswar

My college has so many events starting from dance, singing, culture to sports. Loads of events are organized and many of us participate in it. The labs are so huge and very well maintained bu the university. Beautiful infrastructure and the college are beautifully decorated whenever there is an event or conference.

The course is very difficult and we have to work very hard to attain the desired results. The course is very well designed and divided, it makes you go step by step. With each passing year, the course gets tougher and so the number of hours we have to put in also increases.

Entrance preview

Here both genders are treated equal we have 50-50 ratio of students in both gender and the compus life is fantastic. You have freedom to enjoy with regulated rules. Laboratory equipments are updated with latest technology regularly, sports kits are purchased annually and every year our college will win atleast 2-3 zonal prizes in sports.

Review about NIPER

College helps students in getting placements. Companies pay a decent package to them. Also, Internship opportunities are also given to students. Also,if you don't get a placement, then the course structure is designed in such a manner that you can hang out your shingle.

Admission in Ph.D. Programme is based on the entrance exam (NIPER JEE) and interview. A merit list is prepared which is followed by Interview of the eligible candidates. I chose this course because it provides us a centric and systematic pharmaceutical education.

The course structure is descriptive with educational tours and programs are additionally included in the educational plan which is the best piece of our degree. It is likewise truly learned and an extraordinary chance to visit different well-known research organizations of the nation.

The expense structure is affordable with no hidden charges when contrasted with different schools. The college has different grant programs that help the understudies to have some decrease in expenses. The expense for a P.H.D course for two scholastic years is INR 1.20 LAKHS.

--> -->

Those with a strong motivation to pursue research in modern biology are encouraged to apply for entry into our PhD program.

  • Research Themes

Research at CCMB can be grouped under the following broad themes:

Developmental Biology

We try to understand how cells come together to form a complex multicellular organism - what signals cells sense to know their fates, where these cues come from, and how they are encoded, stored and interpreted.

Structural Biology

Cells work because of multiple classes of molecular machines working in them. We try to understand how the structures of these machines contribute to cellular processes and functions.

Genomics and Epigenetic Regulation

The genetic code holds information on the organisation and function of all living systems. We study the functional relevance of coding and non-coding regions of genomes in organismal development, health, and disease using various model systems.

Cell and Stem Cell Biology

We explore the mechanisms by which cells divide, differentiate, interact with their environment, and self-renew. These studies would lead to the development of novel approaches to address problems in human health.

Microbes and Biology of Infection

Pathogens cause disease by subverting cellular processes of their hosts. We are elucidating the mechanisms by which various classes of microbes establish infection and ensure their survival.

Wildlife Conservation and Ecology

Our conservation biotechnology program aims to provide insights on the protection and propagation of endangered wildlife, reveal aspects of animal behaviour, trace the evolutionary history of species, solve forensic cases, and help in early detection of wildlife diseases.

Crop Improvement

We use our understanding of plant genetics and physiology to develop crop varieties with enhanced traits such as higher yields and disease resistance.

Innovation and Technology Development

The leads emerging from our fundamental research are being channelled into developing technologies for societal benefit.

Overview of PhD in Biotechnology

PhD in Biotechnology is a course designed to introduce the students to cutting-edge bioengineering techniques that can alter the genes to produce something that can have replicable and practical uses on a large scale. It uses a genetic modification, one of the most common techniques to create or modify the physical properties of products in contention.

Biotechnology is often the melting pot where multiple fields merge to work towards the common goal of making human lives better. It tries to find modern solutions to new-age problems, such as bioterrorism, the spread of pathogens, public health, and other public science and medical sciences-related troubles.

There are several well-reputed universities that allow international students to apply for PhD in Biotechnology. But given the intricacies of the course, the cost is often the factor that prevents the applicants from applying for a fellowship in their desired universities across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and other places considered the hub of doctorate and post-graduate courses.

The Indian government and several non-government organizations offer scholarships to provide financial support to potential candidates looking to study abroad and make it easier for them to access reputed labs globally.

Former Caltech Postdoctoral Scholars Drs. Jack Zhang and Mary Luo Support New Theoretical Chemistry Center

A $30 million lead gift endows the Rudolph A. Marcus Center for Theoretical Chemistry in honor of a lifelong mentor and friend.

Dr. Jack Yongfeng Zhang and Dr. Mary Zi-ping Luo's philanthropy advances the Institute's leadership in chemistry and chemical engineering while honoring the legacy of Nobel Laureate Rudolph (Rudy) A. Marcus, the John G. Kirkwood and Arthur A. Noyes Professor of Chemistry. Zhang and Luo's gift pays tribute to the decades of friendship and support provided to the couple by Marcus.

"Thirty-six years ago, I had the privilege of being Rudy's postdoctoral fellow," says Dr. Zhang, president, CEO, chief scientific officer, and co-founder of Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "In scientific exploration, he is my mentor. On the road of life, as both a teacher and a friend, Rudy is more like my father. He is a master of theoretical chemistry. He believes that theorists need to be guided by experiments and connect the scattered dots and blanks between theory and experiment. This thought has deeply influenced us in guiding our current complex drug research and strategies."

Dr. Luo was also a Caltech postdoctoral scholar and is COO, chief scientist, and co-founder of Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "Rudy shares our unfailing confidence and passion for theoretical chemistry," she says. "We are humbled and honored for this opportunity to assist in establishing the Marcus Center for Theoretical Chemistry at Caltech."

Zhang and Luo chose to focus their giving on people, empowering the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering to attract and support the most talented and driven faculty, postdocs, and students. This gift will ensure the division's continued preeminence by enhancing research and teaching through the following:

  • The Tie-Hua Zhang and Su-Hua Li Zhang Graduate Fellowships, named in honor of Zhang's parents;
  • The Liang-Neng Luo and Guo-Hua Lou Luo Postdoctoral Fellowship, named in honor of Luo's parents;
  • The Jack Yongfeng Zhang and Mary Zi-ping Luo Discretionary Fund;
  • The Rudolph A. Marcus Center Instrumentation and Computing Fund; and
  • The Rudolph A. Marcus Center Faculty Recruitment Fund.

"Jack and Mary's generous gift speaks powerfully to our highest aspirations," says Caltech President Thomas F. Rosenbaum, the Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and professor of physics. "It highlights the lifelong connections forged among scholars and mentors at the Institute, while opening doors for following generations of students, postdocs, and faculty members at the leading edge of theoretical chemistry research."

Building on a History of Discovery

Drs. Zhang and Luo's gift is timely for the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, as developments in quantum science and technology are revealing novel avenues of discovery.

Quantum mechanics provides the fundamental theory of molecular behavior. Since its inception in the early 20th century, theoretical chemists at the Institute have led in understanding its implications for chemistry.

  • The late Nobel Laureate and Caltech professor Linus Pauling provided the first theory of the chemical bond.
  • The late Aron Kuppermann, professor of chemical physics, emeritus, completed the world's first complete three-dimensional quantum-mechanical calculation of a chemical reaction and pioneered the use of supercomputers for predicting the cross sections and rates of chemical reactions.
  • William A. Goddard, III (PhD '65), the Charles and Mary Ferkel Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science, and Applied Physics, invented some of the first computational algorithms for molecules.
  • Rudy Marcus developed his now-ubiquitous theory of electron transfer.

Now, a second quantum revolution is underway. New means to control the quantum states of atoms and molecules, together with the intellectual merging of quantum mechanics with theoretical information and computer science, has deepened the understanding of quantum mechanics across the physical sciences.

These advances hold the potential to transform chemistry and chemical engineering. They offer the possibility to move beyond a purely qualitative understanding of quantum behavior to precise computational predictions and design of molecular and material properties, new ways to process spectroscopy with unprecedented resolution through quantum sensing, and the control of chemical reactions by quantum computers.

"The Marcus Center will be a vital accelerator of the transformation in chemistry and chemical engineering being brought about by quantum science," says Dennis A. Dougherty, the George Grant Hoag Professor of Chemistry, who served as chair of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from 2019–2024 and worked closely with Zhang and Luo on this gift. "Jack and Mary's philanthropy will allow us to retain and recruit the brightest minds in the field, support their research, and fund novel investigations."

From Exams to Ever After

Drs. Zhang and Luo met at Caltech in 1988, but it was not the first time they had crossed paths. Years earlier, China resumed the examination system after the Cultural Revolution. Of the more than two hundred candidates who took the quantum-chemistry entrance examination for graduate schools in one of the test zones, only nine were qualified. Two of those nine were Zhang and Luo, and—they later discovered—they both had taken the exam in the same room at the same time.

Luo was the youngest and only woman admitted in that quantum chemistry session. She began attending Princeton University in 1980, where she earned a PhD in chemistry.

Having been recommended and sponsored by Nobel Laureate and renowned theoretical physicist C. N. Yang, Zhang began graduate studies in chemistry at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He first met and began to build a close bond with Marcus when the Caltech professor was giving a lecture at nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory. Marcus encouraged Zhang to come to Caltech, and Zhang joined Marcus's lab in 1988 after earning his PhD.

By then, Luo was already at the Institute, working as a theoretical chemistry postdoc with the late Professor Vince McKoy. During this time, she also completed her memoir, A Generation Lost: China Under the Cultural Revolution , which was published in 1990 by Henry Holt & Company.

It was inevitable that the two would meet, and meet they did: in front of the mailboxes on the first floor of Arthur Amos Noyes Laboratory of Chemical Physics. They were married not long after, and Marcus spoke at the reception in place of Zhang's parents, who were unable to attend.

Luo and Zhang's wedding

"Jack and Mary are exceptional people," Marcus says. "Their well-earned success is a testament to their curiosity, skillfulness, and perseverance. I have been fortunate to know them for the last 36 years, and am deeply grateful that they have chosen to support Caltech in my honor. Their generosity will facilitate countless generations of students, postdocs, and faculty to solve hard problems and generate novel ideas."

Marcus, Zhang, and Luo have not only remained lifelong friends, but have also continued to work together. Marcus has served on the scientific advisory board of Amphastar Pharmaceuticals.

The Quantum-Science Future

Drs. Zhang and Luo's gift bolsters Caltech's leadership in quantum science and technology. The Institute is home to theorists and experimentalists who are making pathbreaking discoveries in areas ranging from quantum computing and biomedical imaging technologies to innovative detectors for measuring gravitational waves . Scientists at the Institute also are investigating quantum materials with interesting electronic, magnetic, optical, and superconducting properties that cannot be described using classical physics. Caltech recently broke ground on the Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement , which will accelerate the exploration of quantum phenomena across all scales and propel the invention of instruments to measure these phenomena with unprecedented sensitivity.

" It is a particularly exciting time in chemistry and chemical engineering as we work to harness the potential of quantum mechanics to expand our fundamental understanding of chemical and physical systems and develop new quantum technologies," says Caltech Provost David Tirrell, the Ross McCollum-William H. Corcoran Professor of Chemistry and holder of the Carl and Shirley Larson Provostial Chair. "Jack and Mary's exceptional generosity positions the Institute to continue its pioneering contributions in the field."

Harrisburg University Research Roundup: July 2024

Harrisburg University Research Roundup: July 2024

Harrisburg, PA  – Welcome to your July 2024 Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) Research Roundup! Our talented students and faculty members are busy presenting at conferences, publishing boundary-pushing research, and building fruitful partnerships with schools, agencies, and organizations. It’s been a great month for research and recognition at HU, so let’s get right to it!

1. PhD Student, Rahul Awasthy, Co-Publishes Paper with HU Faculty

A former Harrisburg University PhD student and now alumnus, Rahul Awasthy, PhD, has co-published an original research paper alongside HU professors  Mark Newman  (corporate faculty member) and  Michael Seavers, PhD  (Assistant Professor and Program Lead of Healthcare Informatics). The paper is entitled,  Admission prioritization of heart failure patients with multiple comorbidities , and appears in Volume 6 of the noted journal  Frontiers  in the Health Informatics category.

The project was born from the observation that healthcare providers and adjacent entities often operate with profitmaking, and not health outcomes, as their chief priority. “I firmly believe that business, processes, and technology should prioritize bringing value to society and humanity, rather than merely competing for wealth,” said Dr. Awasthy. “This research aims to assist healthcare providers in improving care for the critical area of cardiovascular disease patients with comorbidities.”

The focus of this data science research is on developing an AI model to create a decision-support tool for triage staff. Dr. Awasthy concluded: “The goal is to improve the operational efficiency of the current healthcare system by offering a faster and more effective approach for healthcare providers to assist individuals with acute heart failure and other concurrent medical conditions.”

2. Jacqueline Kopack Featured in Summer 2024 FSBPT Newsletter

HU’s  Jacqueline (“Jacki”) Kopack, PT, DPT , Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, was featured in the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy ( FSBPT ) Summer 2024 Newsletter. The FSBPT is a national organization responsible for developing and administering the MPTE (National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE), providing resources for state licensing boards, and educating physical therapists and physical therapist assistants on emerging industry trends and ethical concerns, through continuing competence programs.

For the Summer 2024 Newsletter, FSBPT interviewed Dr. Kopack on her newly published textbook,  Principes of Therapeutic Exercise for the Physical Therapist Assistant .

“I wanted to create a reference text that emphasized the importance and relevance of exercise for people of all ages, while highlighting the relevance and importance of appropriate monitoring during exercise interventions and progressions, regardless of the treatment setting.”

Dr. Kopack continued, “Exercise is a useful intervention for all patients, and PTAs have the skills and abilities to develop and progress interventions that will maximize a patient’s function and quality of life. We really tried to produce a text focused on entry-level skills, while introducing and highlighting how the learner will use critical thinking to build these skills as they develop professionally.

There are several elements that make using the textbook unique and easier for the reader, such as numerous tables for various diagnoses across the phases of healing and over 800 pictures and diagrams. “Some of the chapters have quick class activities to help students understand concepts. There are case studies at the end of each chapter which assists the student to apply new knowledge learned and make sound clinical decisions.”

Wondering what it takes to publish a book? “Do it scared!” says Dr. Kopack. “Sometimes you need to just say yes, even if the task seems daunting.”

3. Tonya Miller Presents Emotional Intelligence in Clinical Leadership Webinar

Next month,  Tonya Miller, PT, DPT, PhD  – Associate Professor Academic and Program Lead Doctor of Physical Therapy – will present a webinar called “ Emotional Intelligence in Clinical Leadership ” with  LeadingAgePA , an organization that seeks to facilitate positive change among aging services in Pennsylvania and inspire its members to practice their trade with strong ethics, a commitment to diversity and equity, and a mind for innovation.

Dr. Miller’s webinar will concentrate on essential strategies for cultivating emotionally intelligent leaders and teams. It will explore the components of emotional intelligence as well as how team leaders can improve team morale, retain and develop top talent, and continuously improve patient outcomes. The goal of the webinar is for participants to emerge with a stronger comprehension of emotional intelligence and its significance in the healthcare workplace, and the tools required to foster this characteristic across their team and organization.

Interested parties can register  here  in advance of the August 15 webinar. Members of LeadingAgePA may attend for free, and participants may qualify for Continuing Education participation hours, pending approval by the NAB and NCERS (National Association of Long-Term Care Administrator Boards and National Continuing Education Review Service).

4. Leena Pattarkine Gives Presentation at Career Ready PA Coalition

Program Lead for Biotechnology and Director for the  Capital Area Biotechnology Partnership ,  Leena Pattarkine, PhD , was invited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to give a presentation at the Career Ready PA Coalition, entitled “Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology: Skills that Employ.”

“ Career Ready PA  is a PA Department of Education undertaking dedicated to state-wide networking for skills-based education in grades K–12,” explained Dr. Pattarkine. “The industry’s needs for a biotechnology and nanobiotechnology skill-trained workforce is desperate and growing. As one of the people leading efforts to strengthen these skill pipelines in Pennsylvania, the Department of Education invited me to share the work we’ve done at the  Capital Area Biotechnology Partnership  (CABP) over the past 16 years.”

CABP works with schools and educators, government agencies, and industry leaders in Pennsylvania to unite biotechnology and nano(bio)technology skills under one umbrella. The program provides high-quality educational plans for high school and college students, as well as science-focused career-seekers.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to share my efforts in this field. Recognition from the Department of Education validates the CABP’s work. This request to present comes directly from the very agency that creates the educational benchmarks for skill-based education in the Commonwealth. I can’t wait to see how student experience is positively impacted by this coalition and its good works.”

5. Erica Ward Receives Patent for Novel Colon Cancer Intervention

Erica Ward , Laboratory Manager and Safety Officer at Harrisburg University, has officially received approval from the US Patent and Trademark Office for an invention she helped develop. This newly canonized medical intervention –  a submucosal lifting agent  – is already having a positive impact on healthcare outcomes for colon cancer patients.

“This patent is the result of work  at my previous employer, GI Supply (now Laborie). Our Research and Development team was working with doctors who were having difficulty removing cancerous legions in the colon. The problem with removing any cancers in the colon is needing to cut something out without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. If there is a perforation in the colon, there is a significant risk of infection to the rest of the body. This leads to lengthier surgeries and additional hospitalization time for the patient.”

“To combat this, doctors were injecting water under the cancerous legions. But the water was leaking too fast, and they struggled to remove the cancer in time. They needed a formula that would ‘lift’ the cancer so the doctors could remove it. We developed and tested a formulation that helps doctors remove cancers faster, with greater precision, and with less risk of infection. The formulation has been FDA-approved since 2020 and is sold around the world.”

Erica continued: “It was a lot of work! And for me, personally, this is my first significant and public contribution to science and medicine. I had always hoped my efforts would help people in some way. This is by far the most substantial and far-reaching of my work. I’m proud of our team and I hope to continue to make a difference in people’s lives in the future.”

You can learn more about this newly patented formulation, including the mechanics of how it works,  right here .
