What to Highlight in a Café Worker Resume

For any position you apply for, it is crucial that you market yourself effectively. This information in your resume what the employer is specifically looking for. Hiring managers and recruiters would be looking for certain things on your resume that will help them decide whether to invite you for an interview or not.

Let's unpack this one by one:

First – Remember to include your work experience and any skills and qualities that show the employer you are the perfect candidate.

Café Workers carry out their duties under the supervision of a Café Manager. Your responsibilities are likely to include seating customers, taking food and drinks to tables, taking orders, collecting dirty dishes, cleaning tables, and refilling glasses.

Second – Highlight that you are able to stand on your feet for long hours, have strong communication and listing skills, and that you have effective people skills. Physical fitness and interpersonal skills are crucial to your job.

Then – A way to make a meaningful impact on the reader is to split your job description up into key duty areas:

Menu Presentation: Presenting menus to customers and offering suggestions or recommending certain items when asked. Taking orders for food and drinks.

Serving: Provide the orders you have taken to the kitchen and fetch them when they are ready. Serving food and drinks to customers, taking away empty dishes when they finish to clear their table.

  • The places you are happy to work in and if you are happy to travel to events using your own transport.
  • The marks and ratings you have achieved at culinary schooling if needed.

Summary & Objective Examples

It is no secret that first impressions can make a significant impact on a person. Essentially, your resume allows the reader to form a first impression of you based of the information you include.

It is for this reason that your resume needs to be of the highest quality and should only include relevant information.

To effectively grab the reader’s attention, you need to include the following:

  • A professional profile
  • A concise introductory paragraph that summarizes your best career achievements. (situated at the beginning of your resume)

If you are unsure of whether to choose a summary or objective, it may help to think of the following.

If you have extensive experience working in this industry, a career summary is the better option to choose.

If your experience is on the thinner side , utilize a career objective paragraph to highlight the goals and qualities you have and the impact you can make if you are hired.

How to write the perfect career summary/objective :

  • Begin by reading through the job description to outline the specific skills and qualities the employer is looking for. The more your resume mimics the job description, the greater your chance of being selected for an interview.
  • The first thing you should write is your years of experience and the most admirable positions you held or responsibilities you were given.
  • Next, include the most attractive skills and qualities that you can offer and explain how you can make a meaningful difference. These skills and qualities will need to be proven later on in the experience section.
  • Lastly, finish with any educational degrees/diplomas and certifications/licenses you have obtained. Examples include a Culinary Arts certificate or a bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Hospitality Management. Typically, a high school diploma is sufficient, however, if you wish to work in more senior roles or more up-market establishments, post-school qualifications are crucial.

Take a look at the examples below:

Summary Example 1

Summary example 2, summary example 3, summary example 4.

Pro Tip: Write your career summary once you have finished your entire resume. It will make the writing process far easier because your information will all be in order and it will prevent you from forgetting any important points.

Employment History

Café workers are needed almost everywhere which means that there is no shortage of job opportunities but, this also means there will be lots of competition. The best way to one-up the competition is by creating a banging resume that highlights the duties and responsibilities you were given in previous positions.

When listing information in this section, we recommend that you use reverse chronological order, as it puts your most recent (and often more impressive) experience first. Use about 5-6 bullet points per job description when listing your duties and responsibilities. A chronological resume can help you pass the ATS test (the Applicant Tracking System utilized by many restaurants to pre-select applicants).

Accomplishments

It can be very tempting to simply copy and paste a generic list of responsibilities from one resume to the next. This, however, is a terrible idea and will only hinder your chances of landing an interview.

The accomplishment section is where you can really make an impact and showcase the things that make you stand out from everyone else.

Make a list of your most admirable achievements and portray them in punchy statements to attract the recruiters’ attention. Remember to quantify your statements with numbers to give meaning to your statements.

Flat, Simple Examples (WHAT NOT TO DO):

  • Knowledgeable on 45+ coffee varieties from around the world.
  • Achieved a great guest satisfaction score based on receipt surveys.
  • Achieved on-time attendance record during the entire employment span.

Accomplishment Statement Examples (DO THIS RATHER):

  • Achieved a 98.4% guest satisfaction store over a 2-year period based on receipt surveys.
  • Achieved 100% on-time attendance record during the entire employment span.

Quantifying Your Resume

As we mentioned in the section above, quantifying your resume is vitally important. Not only does it make reading your resume more interesting, it proves that you are as good as you say you are.

Try your best to answer the following question when listing any of your duties or accomplishments: “How many?” or “How often?”

  • How many working hours do you log in every week?
  • What is the average turnover for your tables?
  • How many tables on average do you service per shift?
  • Developed a task management system that sped up workflow by 32%.
  • Decreased diners’ waiting time by 20% due to a new table placement idea.
  • Kept up 94.7% rating for customer satisfaction for 18 months in a row.

Now see what happens if we remove the quantification – Everything Falls FLAT

  • Developed a task management system that sped up workflow
  • Decreased diners’ waiting time due to a new table placement idea.
  • Kept up a good rating for customer satisfaction

Education Section

Although this field of work does not require crazy degrees and qualifications, your education section, and how you structure this section, is still important.

This is a section that can make a meaningful impact on the reader and get you closer to landing an interview.

List your formal training as well as any diplomas, in-house training, or courses you have completed or are in the process of completing.

When listing your qualifications, you simply need to list the name of the qualification, the name of the institution, and the date you finished.

You may use your job as a café worker to pay for further studies as a stepping stone into the food management industry.

Or if you only have a high school diploma, beef this section up by mentioning any on-the-job training, workshops to leadership that has added value to your theoretical and practical knowledge to perform your job successfully.

Optional Extras for Café Worker Resumes

Just as a burger is incomplete without extra fries, so your resume is incomplete without an optional extras section to really seal the deal and secure your interview. This section can be used to show the reader any further experience you have or any admirable qualities to possess.

Below are several tasty examples of extras to add to your resume:

Resume Licenses & Certifications – If you have any food service certifications or food-handling licenses, list them in this section.

Resume Volunteer Work – This is a clever way to highlight your working experience if you do not have loads of “real-world” work experience. If you have any volunteer work stashed under your apron, mention it as well.

Second Language on a Resume – If you are proficient in other languages, include it in this section. In the restaurant industry this is a huge advantage.

Hobbies on a Resume – Including your hobbies and interests will allow the employer to form a better idea of the person you are and whether you are well suited to their restaurant or not.

A resume objective is a statement at the top of your resume that succinctly summarizes your professional goals and how you plan to achieve them. It should be tailored to the coffee shop manager position you are applying for and should highlight your relevant skills and experience. When writing a resume objective, focus on what makes you unique as an applicant and mention any transferable skills from other jobs that might be applicable. For example, if you worked in customer service before, emphasize your ability to handle customer complaints or resolve disputes. If you have prior management experience, emphasize your leadership skills and ability to motivate others. Additionally, make sure to include any certifications or qualifications related to the job such as food safety certification or barista training. Examples of a resume objective for a coffee shop manager position could be: "Dedicated hospitality professional with 5+ years of customer service experience seeking to leverage strong leadership skills as Coffee Shop Manager at ABC Cafe." Or "Experienced manager with 10+ years in the hospitality industry looking to apply expertise in customer relations and inventory management as Coffee Shop Manager at XYZ Bistro."

How to Write a Coffee Shop Manager Resume Objective

Having an effective resume objective is key to standing out among the competition and getting your foot in the door for a coffee shop manager position. A good objective statement should be concise, targeted, and tailored to the job you are applying for. Here are some tips on how to write a compelling resume objective for a coffee shop manager position.

First, identify the specific skills and experiences that make you an ideal candidate for the job. Do you have experience managing staff or dealing with customer complaints? Are you proficient in POS systems or inventory management? Brainstorm all of your relevant qualifications so that you can incorporate them into your resume objective.

Second, keep it short and sweet. Your resume objective should be no more than two sentences long; any longer and it will lose its impact. Make sure that every word counts by avoiding phrases like “seeking” or “looking for” which add nothing to your statement.

Third, focus on the benefits that you can bring to the employer. Instead of simply listing off qualifications and experiences, emphasize what makes you different from other applicants. For example, rather than saying “I have five years of management experience” say something like “Five years of experience managing customer service operations in fast-paced environments has given me the skills needed to effectively oversee day-to-day operations at a busy coffee shop”

Finally, tailor your resume objective specifically to each job application. If there are certain keywords or requirements listed in the job description, try to include them in your statement so that employers know right away that you’re qualified for the position.

By following these simple tips, you can craft an effective resume objective that will help you stand out from other candidates and get noticed by employers seeking a coffee shop manager.

What Matters Most: Your Coffee-Making Skills & Customer Service Experience

Your resume skills and work experience

You’ve got a diverse skill set that ranges from meticulous cash handling to maintaining the perfect temperature for milk steaming. Whether you’re helping customers or preparing new drinks, you’re all set to perform the job to a high standard.

In this part of your resume, get specific about the exact skills that make you the best candidate for the job. Instead of simply saying that you know how to brew coffee, try to think about the techniques you’re familiar with, such as espresso pulling or latte art.

Additionally, include your knowledge of point-of-sale (POS) systems, sanitation procedures, and even food prep for some of those yummy breakfasts coffee shops tend to serve.

  • Cash Handling
  • Inventory Management
  • Order Processing

Sample coffee shop work experience bullet points

Whether you’re new to the job or a seasoned coffee aficionado, your work experience bullet points are there to make your past accomplishments shine. That’s why it’s crucial to think of the bigger achievements rather than your daily work.

For example, you could say that you served coffee and tea, but a more impressive (and still true to reality) way to put it is to say that you “served 200+ customers per day, preparing coffee, tea, and breakfasts, totaling up to $2,000 in daily sales.”

Another tip is to make sure that this section ties in with the skills you listed above. For instance, if you’re good at espresso pulling, talk about how that led to increasing espresso sales.

Lastly, make sure to add some metrics to really express your impact. Numbers make everything a lot more tangible, and that brings you one step closer to getting hired.

Here’s how to do this in your own resume:

  • Recorded orders, processed transactions, and served beverages and breakfast items to more than 120 dine-in guests per shift
  • Implemented a new inventory management system using MarketMan, reducing supply shortages by 34%
  • Increased sales of pastries and other bakery items by 13% over 3 months by utilizing various upselling techniques
  • Successfully maintained a 4.5/5 rating on online ordering platforms like UberEats and DoorDash by ensuring timely and accurate orders

Top 5 Tips for Your Coffee Shop Resume

  • There are countless ways to prepare coffee, and the more of them you’re familiar with, the better. Create a mouth-watering resume by including in-depth mentions of these techniques, such as coffee cupping, bean grinding, milk steaming, or Chemex.
  • You likely won’t need any specific certifications, but they’re great to include if you have them. This includes Barista Guild Levels 1-3, Q Grader, or SCA certs. In addition, if a food handler’s license is necessary in your area, make sure to add it in too.
  • There are often many coffee shop job openings, but there are also plenty of applicants. Stand out from the crowd by tailoring your resume to match the job description closely.
  • As a coffee shop worker, you might be expected to clean the area and the tools on a daily basis. Showcase your knowledge of proper handwashing, food safety regulations, and proper waste disposal to express that sanitation is important to you.
  • Dealing with people isn’t always easy, so show off those personal skills . Talk about resolving conflicts, successfully increasing sales, or offering personalized menu recommendations.

That’s okay—many coffee shop workers start straight out of school or during college. You can talk about school projects you participated in to highlight your ability to work in a team, as well as volunteer work, or part-time jobs such as babysitting.

It can be a good idea if your resume is looking a little empty. Try to keep them relevant—coffee and tea-brewing are obvious choices, but even attending concerts shows that you’re no stranger to being around people.

Many coffee shops won’t ask you for one, but it’s best to generate a cover letter anyway. Use it to emphasize your excitement at joining that particular company and elaborate on your customer service abilities.

150 Resume Objective Examples to Get You Hired in 2024

March 19, 2024

Your resume objective helps tell the very quick story of who you are, what you bring to the table, and what kind of role you’re looking for. It’s often no more than two sentences long, so when writing one, you want to get to the point pretty fast. On Huntr you can write a resume objective or summary using the resume builder to help you better position yourself to future employers. In this article, we’ll explore what a resume objective is, when to use one, how to write one, and share some resume objective examples that you can copy and paste to help you get hired.

Need help with your resume objective?

Use Huntr's AI-resume builder to help generate resume objectives.

What is a resume objective?

A resume objective is a one to two sentence summary about your goals and reasons for looking for your next role. You can also use it to highlight why you’re the best candidate for a role. Since people often tailor their resume to a specific position, you should consider tailoring your resume objective for every role you apply to as well, to help you land more interviews at the kind of companies you want.

When to use a resume objective

1. when you’re joining the workforce.

A resume objective can be helpful when joining the workforce as you can share your academic achievements and your goals for your first entry-level role out of school.

2. When you’re trying to highlight a niche

A resume objective can be helpful when you bring a very specific value add in a big industry. For example, if you’re a marketer who specializes in startups, you might highlight that specific call out in your resume objective, so people know it’s what you excel at.

3. When you’re making a career change

You often hear stories of people making drastic career changes like a teacher who becomes an HR manager or a nurse who joins the tech industry. Your resume objective would highlight this novel change while highlighting some transferable skills you’ve developed to help qualify you for the role you’re applying for.

4. When you’re moving to a new location

When you’re moving to a new city, a resume objective can help clarify why your previous work experience is in another location.

5. When you want to highlight a resume gap

With layoffs, family leave, or mental health leave, it’s common to sometimes have an extended gap on your resume. If you want to explain your reason for your resume gap, you could share it in your resume objective to help give you the consideration you need to re-enter the workforce.

How to write a resume objective

1. get to the point.

You only have about two sentences worth of space in your resume objective. So, when writing one, you’ll want to get to the point fast. For example, “An experienced marketer with over 10 years of experience who helps startups grow into household names”

2. Tailor it to the position you’re applying for

Your resume objective should be tailored for every job you apply to. You should highlight why you’re qualified for a role based on the job description you find online.

3. Lead with your biggest accomplishment

If you’ve had a big win in your career, highlighting it in your resume objective can help you stand out among other job seekers. For example, “A content marketer who’s generated over 30 million views in a single calendar year looking for a full-time position.”

4. Explain why you’re the best candidate

What’s your competitive advantage in the job search? Zero in on it for your resume objective. Share why you’re the most qualified candidate applying for a role to help you boost your chances of getting hired. For example, “A developer who’s built from the ground up three SaaS products that have been acquired in the last eight years.”

75+ Real-Life Resume Objective Examples [+How-to Guide]

Background Image

You’re looking to enter the workforce and find the perfect first job in your chosen field. As you’re scrolling through job boards, mindlessly browsing through countless irrelevant ads, you come across an interesting posting.

There it is—the perfect job!

This is what you’ve been looking for all along.

It’s the job that will ease your student loans, cover your crippling debt, help you figure out the meaning of life, and even get your crush to notice you.

There’s just one small problem, though.

You’re not sure how to convince the hiring manager that you’re a good fit for the job.

This is where the resume objective comes in.

Done right, a resume objective can win over the hiring manager and show them that you make up for your lack of relevant experience with passion and enthusiasm.

In this article, we’re going to teach you everything you need to know about resume objectives, including:

  • What a Resume Objective Is (And Why It Matters!)
  • How to Write the Perfect Resume Objective
  • Real-Life Resume Objective Examples for Every Field

Let’s dive right in.

This guide is part of our larger resume series. If you want to start at the beginning, take a look at our comprehensive guide on how to make a resume .

What is a Resume Objective?

A resume objective is an eye-catching statement of your career intent that’s placed at the top of your resume. Its goal is to pique the hiring manager’s curiosity and get them to read the rest of your application.

The resume objective provides a two to three-sentence snapshot of your professional experience, skills, and achievements and aims to explain why they make you the right candidate for the job.

Here’s an example:

resume objective

When Should You Use a Resume Objective?

Resume objectives aren’t that common. If you’re an experienced professional, you’re much better off sticking to a resume summary to describe your top skills and experiences.

That said, there are a few cases when you should stick to a resume objective instead, including:

  • Searching for your first job. Whether you’re a fresh graduate looking for your very first job or a student signing up for your first internship, a resume objective will show the hiring manager that you have the drive to develop your skill set and grow within the company.
  • Making a career change. If you worked as an engineer in an app development company for the past three years and you’re now applying for a marketing job in a start-up, a resume summary just won’t do. A well-written resume objective, on the other hand, can highlight how your current skills are relevant to the position and how enthusiastic you are for this next step in your career.

career masterclass

How to Write a Convincing Resume Objective

Your resume objective can tip the scales in your favor during your job search .

Resume objectives are structured in three main parts:

  • Who you are. You can mention what your level of experience is and why it’s relevant. (E.g.: Recent Finance graduate, looking to kickstart my career in accounting. )
  • What you offer the company. This is where you can highlight skills that would make you a good fit for the job. (E.g.: Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and Mathematics. )
  • How you’ll help the company accomplish its goals. Mention what your goal within the company is. (E .g.: Eager to contribute to Business X’s growth by reducing costs. )

Not too hard, right?

To make things even easier, you can just follow our tried-and-tested resume objective template:

In a nutshell, a resume objective is a great way to draw attention away from your lack of relevant work experience and, instead, show the hiring manager what essential skills and other experiences you have and how they can help you succeed in the company.

(1) [SKILL/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION RELEVANT TO THE JOB WITH JOB TITLE] . Looking to apply my (2) [years/months of EXPERIENCE RELEVANT TO THE JOB DESCRIPTION] at [COMPANY YOU ARE APPLYING TO] , to help (3) [TYPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES YOU WILL HELP OUT WITH SUCCESSFULLY] .

In practice, it looks something like this:

  • CPA-certified forensic accountant with demonstrated experience in financial record examination. Looking to apply my 3 years of experience at Company X to help the team at ABC Inc. improve their activity-based accounting techniques in the role of a managerial accountant.

So, basically,  a badly written resume objective is overly generic and doesn’t say anything new about the candidate. But when done right, a resume objective can help your application stand out.

5 Tips for Writing an Awesome Resume Objective

If you follow the formatting we laid out for you, then you’re already 90% ready with your resume objective.

Now, all you have to do is take it to the next level by following these tips:

#1. Tailor Your Resume Objective to the Job

Make sure to tailor your resume objective to the specific position or organization you are applying to. After all, a vague “ engineer looking for an engineering job ” doesn’t impress anyone.

A tailored resume objective shows the employer that you've taken the time to research the company and the position and that you've carefully thought about how your goals align with the company.

Start by thoroughly reading the job description and picking out the key skills, work experience , and qualifications that the employer is looking for. You can also check their website to learn more about their mission statement or company culture. Then, think about how your background makes you a good match for them.

For example, if you're applying for a marketing position at a company that promotes sustainability, your objective might be:

  • Aspiring Marketing Coordinator seeking a role at EcoTextile Innovations. Strong foundation in communication and ethical business practices, aimed at promoting fair-trade textiles. Ready to drive innovative marketing strategies in a dynamic team environment with a deep commitment to sustainability.

When you match your resume objective to the employer’s needs, it shows you're not just looking for any job—you want this job. As such, tailoring your resume objective like this can make a strong impression and convey your genuine interest in the role.

#2. Include Relevant Skills

Your resume objective should include skills, knowledge, and abilities that you know will help the company achieve its goals.

This paragraph isn’t just about yourself or your career—it’s about how you’re going to help the company, which is what the hiring manager is looking to find out.

So, even when you’re professionally inexperienced, you might have skills that you’ve acquired in other ways, such as through internships, volunteer work, or any relevant coursework . What you need to do is focus on listing those in your resume objective instead of traditional work experience, and show that you’re prepared to add value from day one. Just go through the job description and reflect on what your transferable skills are and how you match the job requirements.

Always be specific and use concrete examples of where you gained those skills. For example, if you are applying for a human resources position, your resume objective could be:

  • Psychology graduate seeking an entry-level Human Resources Assistant role at Bright Futures Inc. Eager to apply strong organizational and communication skills honed through academic projects and volunteer work. Aimed at contributing to team management and enhancing employee satisfaction within a dynamic corporate environment.

This shows that you have plenty of the knowledge and soft skills that the job needs and that you can bring value to the team.

#3. Stick to the Facts

It might be tempting to use grand statements to impress your potential employer, but bragging and vague language have no place in your resume objective.

So, instead of making yourself sound cool with vast words and declarations, use as many facts and numbers as possible to back up your experience. Say, for example, that you’re going from Marketing to Advertising. It’s one thing to say “Expert at Advertising” and another to say “Experienced in managing 5-figure advertising spend from my previous position as a Facebook Marketer.”

Sticking to the facts gives you a lot more credibility. When you back up your skills and experiences with hard data, you're not just telling the employer what you can do; you're proving it.

So, how do you put this into practice? Just dig into your professional and academic history. Think about when and how you made a difference.

Did you increase sales, cut costs, or improve efficiency? Maybe you did something during an internship, any of your courses, or while working a part-time job? Quantify any of those impressive achievements you want to add to your resume objective, and you’re good to go.

Focusing on the facts shows that you know your stuff, and it demonstrates a level of professionalism and attention to detail that employers love. It’s exactly those details that can tell your story and make your resume stand out from the crowd.

#4. Relate Your Goals to the Company

If you have a resume with no work experience , you can include a career goal in your resume objective. Just make sure it’s something related to the company you’re applying to.

Your focus should always be on showing the hiring manager how your goals support the company’s needs. For example, if you’re applying for a customer support representative position, your resume objective should relate to customer service excellence, not your dream to eventually become a professor.

For example, if you’re applying to a tech firm for a customer support role, here’s what your resume objective can be:

  • IT graduate Looking to join Company XYZ as a Customer Support Representative. Eager to use my interpersonal skills and understanding of technology to improve customer satisfaction and contribute to the company’s tech advancements.

Framing your career goals to reflect the company’s objectives shows the hiring manager that you understand the role and that you’re ready to contribute right from the start.

#5. Keep It Simple

There’s no need to use complex words in your resume objective.

Using complicated language and words to make yourself sound smart usually leaves a bad impression and makes you come off as arrogant.

For example, instead of "contemplate,” just say "think." Instead of using "undertake,” use "do.” They both mean the same thing anyway, and you want your achievements to speak louder than the fancy words you use.

This makes your resume objective much more straightforward to understand and serves as a subtle hint that shows you can communicate clearly . After all, your resume objective aims to make you shine as a candidate, not show off your vocabulary.

Good Example VS Bad Example

Let’s drive the point home by showing you the difference between a resume objective that follows our tips and one that doesn’t.

XYZ Inc. is looking for a sales representative manager for its German branch . Minimum of 3 years of working experience in management. Daily duties: planning, directing, and overseeing the sales representative team.

And here is a no-no kind of resume objective:

  • I am looking to appertain my exceptional skills in management by being part of a groundbreaking and innovative company for a few years, then eventually switching to a job in AI.

This is what makes the above a bad resume objective:

  • “Exceptional” is subjective. The hiring manager has no way of knowing whether this bold statement is true.
  • The language needs to be simplified. Why use “appertain” when you can just say “apply”?
  • Giving the company empty flattery doesn’t leave a great impression. Most companies think of themselves as “groundbreaking” or "innovative," so you’re not showing the company why you’re interested in them.
  • The entire resume objective sounds more focused on you than on the company, and yet it doesn’t tell them anything relevant about you as a candidate.
  • Your career goal tells them you won’t be sticking with them for too long. That’s a major red flag for any employer, so you’re not getting a call.

On the other hand, here is a great resume objective:

  • Sales manager trained in Berlin. Looking to apply my BA in Business Management and acquired skills at XYZ Inc. by making sure the sales representative team is staffed and follows quality standards, helping XYZ increase revenue and market share in the process.

Here’s why this resume objective is good:

  • The professional experience is summarized and backed up with concrete facts.
  • It mentions abilities that make you stand out and match the job requirements, like being trained in Germany.
  • The resume objective shows that you understand the role and responsibilities the position requires, and you describe how you’ll do them successfully.
  • It also includes the skills and experience relevant to the management position.
  • The overall language is simple, down-to-earth, and objective, and it’s tailored to show that you genuinely care about the overall goals of the company.

3 Most Common Cases for a Resume Objective

By now, you have all the information you need to write an amazing resume objective.

So, let’s look at the three most common cases when you’ll need to write one.

#1. Recent Graduate Resume Objective

The most common situation where you’d need a resume objective is when you don’t have any work experience and need a way to stand out from the rest of the applicants.

So, if you’re a recent graduate looking for a job , your resume objective should focus more on your education, internships, and extracurricular activities , if applicable. Here’s an example:

  • Motivated Liberal Arts graduate eager to join ABC Inc. as a junior graphic designer. Looking forward to applying skills in Photoshop and Canva to create eye-catching visuals that captivate audiences.

You can also write an eye-catching resume objective that will grab the hiring manager’s attention, even if you’re a job-seeker without a relevant degree in the field. You just have to focus on your best personal traits, skills, and motivation instead of work experience or education.

  • Organized and hard-working professional looking to join XYZ Inc. as a marketing assistant. Looking to take advantage of my copywriting and editing skills to help XYZ Inc. with their marketing efforts.

#2. Internship Resume Objective

If you’re looking to land an internship, writing a great resume objective can be just as beneficial.

It’s your best bet at piquing the hiring manager’s attention, getting them to read the rest of your resume, and getting that internship .

In this case, you want to focus on:

  • Your educational background and achievements
  • Your most relevant hard and soft skills
  • Any other relevant experience, such as personal projects or volunteering experience

And here’s a practical example:

  • Recent graduate with a B.A. in Business Administration, looking to start a career in Finance through an internship at XYZ Inc. Experienced in analyzing financial statements and annual reports for several university projects. Seeking to further develop my theoretical know-how with strong mentorship at XYZ Inc.

#3. Career Change Resume Objective

The next most common situation where you’d use a resume objective is if you’re going for a career change .

A resume objective helps the hiring manager understand how your skillset from a previous field helps translate into the job you’re applying for.

Here, you can mention:

  • Relevant skills for the job you’re applying for
  • Previous work experience
  • How your background will help you excel at the job

Here’s how this looks in practice:

  • Customer Support Representative with 3+ years of experience in over-the-phone technical support looking to leverage communication skills as a Sales Representative at XYZ Inc. Excellent track record in delivering quality support service, having maintained a 4.6+ star “Helpful” rating over the past 2 years.

Create an Effective Resume: Check out the Resume Objective Examples

The resume tends to be the first impression that you give an employer when you apply for a position. Of all the various components, the objective statement of the resume holds special significance for those just getting a start in their career, attempting a career transition, or trying to advance upwards in the current field.

An objective statement of a resume is your chance to inform employers that your skills and talents align with the requirements of their open position. A well-written objective statement can be tailor-made for the job you are applying for. It adds value to your resume and allows it to differ from other applicants.

What is a Resume Objective?

Resume Objective Examples

A resume objective is something quick that sits at the top of your resume, below your contact information. It's usually one or two sentences describing what your career goals are and the value that you can bring to the position. While a professional summary shows the achievements from your past experiences, a resume objective covers what you want to achieve later and how it coincides with the position you seek.

An effective resume objective helps you differentiate yourself from other candidates by stating your career goals and how they align with the job you are applying for. Here, we discuss what a resume objective is, what it entails to craft one, and provide some examples suitable for different career stages and lines of industry. By choosing the right resume builder or template, you can add the objective easily and effectively.

When Do You Need a Resume Objective?

  • If you're just starting your career, with minimal experience, an objective is a great opportunity to state goals and how those skills will benefit the employer.
  • If you're changing industries or careers, then a resume objective can be used to explain your career change and how your transferable skills make you fit for the position.
  • If you have a focused, specific goal that fits with a particular job or company, an objective can express that focus for employers.

Writing a Resume Objective

Your resume objective should be concise, specific, and related to the job one is seeking an application.

Specifically State: No more vague words. Mention the post you are applying for and what you intend to achieve.

Align with the Job Description : Customize your objective to the job description and make it reflect the skills and goals that you have, and which correspond to the needs of the employer.

Demonstrate Value : Let the employer know just how your skills, experiences, or objectives will benefit them. Focus on what may be in it for them—not just what you want from them.

Keep it Short: Your goal should be short—1-2 sentences suffice. Make it clear and to the point, and write it in simple language.

Final Words

A strongly written resume objective will make you the most prominent candidate in a sea of applicants. It gives across your career objective and how this is related to the job you applied for, making it pretty simple for any employer to see how you fit well. Whether you are entering the workforce for the first time, making a change in your career, or aiming for career advancement, a good objective will provide your resume with the focus and direction that are strong enough to make an impact. But here is the important advice: try to fit your resume objective into the concern of the respective employer.

Anna Muckerman

Review the job description fully

Reflect on your motivations for applying for the job, spotlight your achievements, be clear and concise.

Whether you’ve just graduated, are looking to switch careers, or are stepping into the workforce for the first time, an entry-level CV objective is a great way to share your goals and let the hiring manager know about your unique strengths.

However, CV objectives can be viewed as outdated. If it’s all about you and not the prospective employer, then including a CV objective could make you look a little self-serving. The trick is to get the balance just right by clarifying how your strengths and goals align perfectly with the job posting and prospective employer.

In this article, we’ll explain what a CV objective is, the right time to use one and provide you with some examples of CV objectives that you can tailor to your unique requirements.

An entry-level objective on your CV is an introductory paragraph designed to highlight your key skills, career goals, and share the reasons for applying to a specific company.

Traditional CV objectives are typically brief statements focused on your goals, such as “Keen to secure the role of IT specialist and progress to a supervisory role at ABC Group.” While this communicates your objectives, it doesn’t tell the hiring manager about your unique strengths or how you plan to add value if appointed.

The best approach is to craft a short paragraph (three to five sentences) that includes key skills mentioned in the job description, relevant education, and any notable achievements.

How to write an entry-level CV objective

Including a CV objective on your entry-level CV can help you project your ambition and professionalism. Here are the steps to follow:

Treat the job description as a master plan when preparing your CV objective. This document will outline exactly what the employer is looking for in a potential candidate, so take note of any skills, experience, education, and attributes that are emphasised as important. These keywords or terms should feature prominently in your CV objective.

Why are you applying for the job? Why do you want to work for the company? What motivates you and what do you hope to gain from the position? The answers to these questions will help you write a CV objective that is both authentic and compelling.

  • Tailor your CV objective to the specific job opportunity and make sure it’s consistent with the rest of your CV.
  • Include any specific facts or quantifiable figures in your CV objective. This backs up the skills and experience you are putting forward.
  • Use complicated language in your CV objective as it can sound unauthentic. Instead of “flourishing,” try “growing.”
  • Brag and oversell your skills and abilities in your objective. It’s great to be confident, but you can trip up in an interview situation.

While you may be applying for your first job, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have zero accomplishments to highlight in your CV objective. Have a brainstorming session and make a list of any relevant awards or achievements you have acquired via your academic studies, part-time jobs, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities. Selecting a notable achievement can make your CV objective shine.

Don’t try to cram too much information into your CV objective and use clear language to communicate your intentions for applying for the role. Hiring managers prefer a short, succinct CV objective, rather than a long and winding tale.

CV objective examples

Now you have the lowdown on the steps to writing a powerful CV objective, let’s take a look at some CV objective examples to give you some inspiration.

Detail-oriented environmental science graduate with a passion for sustainability. Successfully completed an internship with Celsa UK, contributing to policy analysis and research projects. Keen to apply solid academic background and acquired scientific expertise to contribute to EcoCentral’s short- and long-term goals.

Caring, creative, and reliable child care professional, holding NVQ Level 2 in Early Years Childcare and valuable volunteer experience gained at a local toddler group. Focused on supporting young children to reach their full potential. Keen to learn, progress, and contribute as a nursery assistant with ABC Nursery.

Driven professional with eight years of experience in sales and business development in the financial services sector, and a passion for digital marketing. Currently completing a diploma in digital marketing management. A creative problem-solver, adept at engaging with diverse clients to enhance revenue and boost brand visibility.

Key takeaways

  • Writing a powerful CV objective is a great tool you can leverage to convince a hiring manager to give you a shot when applying for your first job.
  • Review the job description so you can identify the key requirements of the specific role, then address these areas in your CV objective.
  • While a lack of experience may seem like a major obstacle when creating an entry-level CV, don’t forget that your academic studies, part-time jobs, volunteering and extracurricular activities are all valuable areas you can reference.
  • Keep your CV objective direct, succinct, and impactful without stuffy language or jargon. Include facts and figures as much as possible, and tell the company exactly what you can do for them. Show yourself as the solution to their problem!
