How to make plans for the future in French?

Standard Post

Last week we learned about Futur Simple , and now it is time to go over Le Futur Proche tense. We use this tense when we are certain that an event or action will happen, either in the immediate future, or at a definted point in the future, eg. tomorrow, next week, in July, next year.  Or in other words, we can use Futur Proche when we are talking about our plans. Let's dive in:

Here are 5 Great Tips to Talk About Your Future Plans in French

1. le futur est si proche.

The easiest way to express your upcoming plans is to use the verb tense called  futur proche,  which is the equivalent to  going to + verb in the infinitive form  in English.

Futur proche  is used every day by most native speakers to talk about what they will do in the near future, i.e. in a few hours, tomorrow or in the next few days. It is considered more informal.

Verbe ALLER au présent + verbe à l’infinitif

  • Je vais manger  une salade.  (I am going to eat a salad.)
  • Tu vas parler  avec ta mère ce soir.  (You are going to speak with your mother tonight.)
  • Il va acheter  une baguette au supermarché.   (He is going to buy a baguette at the supermarket.)
  • Nous allons nager  dans le lac dans quelques heures.   (We are going to swim in the lake in a few hours.)
  • Vous allez écrire  un courriel à votre patron.  (You are going to write an email to your boss.)
  • Ils vont se reposer  cet après-midi parce qu’ils sont très fatigués.  (They are going to relax/take it easy this afternoon because they are very tired.

2. Qu’est-ce que tu vas faire aujourd’hui?

So, what are you going to do today?

  • Comme je suis en congé, je pense que je vais aller m’entraîner au centre de fitness ce matin.   (As I have a day off, I think I’m going to work out at the gym this morning.)
  • Ensuite, je vais faire les courses en après-midi.   (Then, I’m going (to go) grocery shopping in the afternoon.)
  • Je vais acheter un poulet rôti pour le dîner.  (I am going to buy a roasted chicken for dinner.)
  • Je vais aller chercher mes parents à la station de train en soirée.  (I am going to pick up my parents at the train station in the evening.)
  • Ils vont arriver à la Gare Cornavin vers 18h30.  (They are going to arrive at Gare Cornavin around 6.30 PM.)
  • Ma mère m’a dit qu’ ils vont sûrement arriver  à l’heure.  (My mother told me that they are probably going to be on time.)
  • Ils vont prendre le train de bonne heure demain matin.  (They are going to take the train quite early tomorrow morning.)
  • Ils vont passer leurs vacances d'hiver   dans les  Alpes.   (They are going to spend their winter holidays on the Alps.)

3. Le futur n’est pas si simple!

Another more formal way to express your future plans is to use a verb tense called  futur simple , which isn’t as simple to use as  futur proche , but not quite as complicated as some might think! I recommend using  futur simple  in more formal situations during which you want to show respect or impress your speaking partner with your mastery of  futur simple !

This verb tense is very similar to the modal verb  will  in English. We take the infinitive (for  re -verbs, we remove the last  e ) and add the following endings:  ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont .  Être  and  avoir  are irregular, as always.

For irregular verbs, please refer to  Le Conjugueur , a very useful tool to learn and check your French conjugation.

  • Je parler ai *  avec elle aujourd’hui.  (I will speak with her today.)
  • Tu habiter as  toujours à Genève l’an prochain?  (Will you still live in Geneva next year?)
  • Il finir a  son rapport avant la fin de la journée .   (He will finish his report before the end of the day.)
  • Nous partager ons  notre Airbnb avec nos meilleurs amis lors de nos prochaines vacances estivales .   (We will share our Airbnb with our best friends during our next summer holidays.)
  • Vous manger ez  bien un petit morceau avec nous, n’est-ce pas?  (You will eat a bite with us, won’t you?)
  • Ils agir ont  en temps et lieu .   (They will act in due course.)

*Please note that the ending ” ai ” is pronounced like  é  in  caf é  or s ay . *

French Future Tense

French Future Tense

The French future tense (futur simple) is formed by adding the future ending (-ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont) to the future stem. For example, je parlerai (I will speak). Another future tense called the futur proche is formed by combining the present tense of aller (to go) with an infinitive. For example, je vais parler (I am going to speak).

French Future Tense - Guide to both the futur simple and futur proche tenses.

French future tense

How to form the futur simple.

In French, the futur simple endings are the same for every verb in the the language. For regular -er and -ir verbs, the future stem is the infinitive of the verb. For regular -re verbs the future stem is the infinitive minus the -e.

French future tense conjugation.

This table shows the futur simple endings for regular verbs.

Irregular verb stems

Many French verbs have an irregular stem in the futur simple . This means that rather than just adding the ending of the infinitive (je parlerai) , the infinitive appears in a completely different spelling. For example, for the verb être (to be), the futur simple is je serai (I will be).

Futur simple uses

The following example sentences all use the futur simple . You will see that they all include an element of uncertainty.

  • Si j’ai l’ argent , j’ achèterai la vo iture . I’ll buy the car if I have the money.
  • J’espère qu’elle viendra demain . I hope she’ll come tomorrow.
  • Je pense qu’il pleuvra demain. I think it’ll rain tomorrow.
  • Je crois que les enfants seront très heureux . I believe the kids will be very happy.

Future-future rule

There is a grammatical in French which I called the “future-future” rule. In English, you say “I will call you when I arrive”. In French, the futur simple is used for both verbs in this kind of sentence. Hence it would look like: “I WILL call you when I WILL arrive” or “Je vous téléphonerai quand j’ariverai” .

The following sentences are examples of the future-future rule. The trigger words for this rule are underlined.

  • Je t’appellerai dès que j’aurai les nouvelles. I’ll call you once I get the news.
  • Je partirai en vacances quand il fera beau. I’ll go on vacation when it’s nice out .
  • Il se couchera dès qu ‘il finira son travail. He’ll go to bed once he finishes his work.
  • J’achèterai une maison quand j’aurai assez d’argent. I’ll buy a house when I have enough money.

Si clause sentence with futur simple

The futur simple can be used in sentences like, “If I have the money, I will buy the car”. “Si j’ai l’argent, j’achetèrai la voiture” . The rule is: Si + present tense, then + futur simple . Here are some examples:

  • Si j’ai le temps , je partirai en vacances. I’ll go on vacation if I have the time.
  • Si j’ai les moyens, j’acheterai le bateau. I’ll buy the boat if I can afford it.

Futur antérieur (past future tense)

The futur antérieur (past future tense) is used to describe actions that will have happened in the future. For example, J’aurai mangé (I will have eaten).

  • For verbs which use avoir (to have) as an auxiliary verb in the passé composé , the futur an é rieur is formed with avoir conjugated in the future and the past participle.
  • For verbs which use être as an auxiliary verb in the passé composé , conjugate être in the future and add the past particle.

Futur antérieur conjugation

The following table summarizes the conjugations for the French past future tense and includes a reflexive verb .

j'aurai parlé
tu auras parlé
il aura parlé
nous aurons parlé
vous aurez parlé
ils auront parlé
je serai allé(e)
tu seras allé(e)
il/elle sera allé(e)
nous serons allé(e)s
vous serez allé(e)(s)
ils/elles seront allé(e)s
je me serai levé(e)
tu te seras levé(e)
il/elle se sera levé(e)
nous nous serons levé(e)s
vous vous serez levé(e)(s)
ils/elles se seront levé(e)s

Futur antérieur example sentences

The future perfect can be used in straight “will have happened” sentences as well as form anteriority – Action A will have happened before action B.

“Will have” sentences

This following are examples of straight “will have” sentences.

  • J’aurai appris tous ces verbes avant la fin de l’ année . I will have learned all these verbs before the end of the year.
  • Tu aura déjà trouvé un nouveau boulot avant juillet. You will have already found a new job before July.
  • Nous aurions acheté une nouvelle maison avant 2027. We will have bought a new house before 2027.

Anteriority examples

The following example sentences introduce the idea of “anteriority”: When action A occurs, action B will have already occurred.

  • Quand tu arriveras à la maison, j’aurai déjà fini mon repas . When you get home, I’ll already have finished my meal.
  • Quand elle partira, je serai déjà parti. When she leaves, I’ll already have left.
  • Dès que tu accepteras ma décision, nous en parlerons. Once you accept my decision, we’ll talk about it.

Probability

The following example sentences express probability: Action A should have happened.

  • Il aura encore oublé le rendez-vous! He must have forgotten the meeting again!
  • Elle aura encore brûlé le gâteau! She must have burnt the cake again!
  • Ils auront encore raté l’examen! They must have failed the exam again!

The following example sentences cover the concept of “whether” – “I wonder if + completed action”.

  • Je me demande si elle sera venue. I wonder if she came.
  • Je voudrais savoir s’ils auront fini les devoirs. I’d like to know if they finished the homework.
  • Je me demande s’il se sera rendu compte de sa faute. I wonder if he realized his mistake.

Futur proche: Near future tense

The futur proche is formed by following a conjugated form of aller (to go) + infinitive . For example, je vais manger (I’m going to eat). Je vais is the conjugated form of aller in the first-person singular form and manger is the infinitive of to eat.

Futur proche conjugation

French near future tense (le futur proche) conjugation.

Futur proche uses and examples

The futur proche often suggests a high level of certainty, meaning it is very likely that the event will happen in the future. The name of the tense is literally the “near” future tense, the described event can occur both in the immediate (next few minutes) or more distant (next few years) future.

The main point is that there is that the level of certainty is higher than the futur simple, which we will see below.

Example sentences:

  • Je vais acheter les billets. I am going to buy the tickets (it is certain; I have a reservation).
  • Nous allons dîner au restaurant . We are going to eat out (again it is certain, we have a reservation).
  • Ils vont achter la maison. They are going to buy the house (Again, it is certain – they got approved for the loan).

To negate the future proche , wrap ne…pas around the conjugated form of aller . This page on our site covers French negation rules in detail.

  • Je ne vais pas manger. I’m not going to eat.
  • Il ne va pas travailler . He’s not going to dance.

  • Exercises – Futur proche

Le futur proche , also known as le futur composé, is used to talk about actions in the near future. It corresponds to the English structure going to + infinitive , and emphasises that there is already an intention behind the action.

Learn all about the futur proche in French grammar with Lingolia’s quick and easy examples, then test your knowledge in the exercises.

  • to talk about a planned action in the near future Example: Elle va aller au supermarché. She’s going to go to the supermarket.

Futur simple vs. futur proche

The futur simple and the futur proche are used in different contexts, sometimes comparable to the English will vs. going to :

Use the futur simple :

  • to express events in the more distant future (signal words: dans une semaine, l’année prochaine … ) Example: J’ habiterai encore à Paris dans deux ans . In two years I will still be living in Paris.
  • in sentences that contain a subordinate clause introduced by quand, lorsque or dès que. Example: Nous sortirons quand la pluie s’arrêtera. We’ll go out when the rain stops.

  • in spoken French

To conjugate the futur proche , we use the present tense of the verb aller as an auxiliary verb, followed by the infinitive of the main verb.

The Future Tense in French: Your Essential Guide

Let’s talk about the future. We can talk about topics like the trip you’re planning to France next spring. And the soccer game you’re going to next week, or  your French self-study session  planned for this evening.

The Present Tense as Future in French

Where to practice the french future tense, and one more thing....

French has multiple future   tenses, and just like in English, they’re used when referring to events that haven’t occurred yet—things that will take place anytime in l’avenir   (the future). The indicative tense forms of the future   tense   are also sometimes used to express other things, such as:

  • Politeness : “Je vous demanderai de ne pas faire de bruit.”   (I have to ask you to not make noise.)
  • Probability or hypothesis : “Si ça sonne à la porte, ce sera sûrement lui” (If it rings at the door, it will surely be him.)
  • Emotion : “Nous devrons tout supporter en silence.”  (We must endure everything silently.)

Of course, it expresses the future as well, and it can be simple to use.

The simple future tense ( le futur simple )  is the basic form of the future, and the English equivalent of “ will + verb .” Here’s an example of how the simple future tense is used:

Ils mangeront dans l’avion. (They will eat on the plane.)

Note that in French, there is no translation for the often-used “will” in English. The future tense is one entity; more specifically, it is made of the entire verb plus an ending, depending on what subject is being used.

In the above case, ils   refers to a group of people ( “Il”   meaning “he” and the extra “s” meaning “they,” referring to either a group of men or a group of men and women).  Ils  (and elles ,  which is used for groups of women) gets an ending of  -ont  at the end. For further explanation about what endings go with what subject, see the conjugation section below.

The future perfect tense ( le futur antérieur ) , on the other hand, expresses an act that will have happened in the future. Here’s an example of how the future perfect tense is used:

Demain, j’aurai déjà lu mon livre. (Tomorrow, I will have already read my book.)

See here how this tense is very specific. You know for a fact that you’ve set aside time to read the book tomorrow, and, therefore, it will be finished.

Oftentimes, these two tenses are used together:

Quand j’aurai déjeuné, je travaillerai. (After I’ve eaten, I will start working).

The first half of that sentence is in the future perfect tense ,  and expresses an action (eating) that you know will have to be completed before you are able to complete the next action in the future (working, expressed with the simple future tense).

501 French Verbs: with CD-ROM (501 Verbs Series)

Here’s how to conjugate both tenses. One of my favorite tools for looking up irregular conjugations is WordReference , as well as my book of  “501 French Verbs” .

The guidelines are for regular conjugations , so use the aforementioned tools for complete conjugating rules. You’ll also find some common irregular verbs conjugated in the simple future tense below.

Formation of Simple Future Tense: Use the entire verb as the stem, adding -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont at the end.

Here are two examples of regular -er and -ir verbs conjugated in the simple future tense:

(to speak) (to finish)

Regular  -re  verbs also follow a pattern : simply remove the “e” from the ending of the infinitive and add your future endings. For example: for descendre   (to descend, to go down) and apprendre (to learn), add the future endings to the stem descendr- ( je descendr ai , etc) and apprendr- ( je apprendrai , etc) respectively.

(to descend, to go down) (to learn)

Conjugating  être  and  avoir in the Simple  Future Tense

Être (to be)   and avoir   (to have) are not only basic verbs in French, but are also helping verbs for the future perfect tense. They have irregular conjugations in the simple future tense ,  just as they’re irregular in the present tense. Since we’ll be using their simple future conjugations when we form the future perfect tense, here are their simple future tense conjugations for reference:

(to have) (to be)

Notice that with irregular verbs, it’s only the stem that changes —the endings remain the same. For avoir , the stem is  aur-,  and for être,  it’s  ser- .

There are many other verbs that also have irregular conjugations in the simple future tense (meaning the stem changes). Here are some of the most common irregular verb conjugations :

(to go) (to do, to make) (to be able to) (to send)

For more irregular verbs in the simple future tense, check out this very useful ThoughtCo. article .

Channel your knowledge of the simple past tense , the French tense that uses either  avoir  or être as a stem with a past participle . A past participle indicates a past or completed action or time, and there is a specific participle for every verb in the French language.

To form the past participle:

For regular -er verbs , like parler: knock off the “r” and accent the “e.” For  parler,  we get  parlé.

For regular -ir verbs , like finir: take away the “r.” For finir , we get fini .

For regular -re verbs , like descendre: remove the “re” and add “u.” For descendre , we get descendu .

Formation of Future Perfect Tense: Simple future (of main verb’s auxiliary,  avoir or  être ) + past participle (of main verb).

How do you know which helping verb to use ( avoir  or être )? Well, each French verb either takes one or the other, so with time you’ll learn which verbs go with which helping verb.

For now, know that most verbs that use  être  are verbs of movement (although not all verbs of movement use être ). Reflexive verbs such as s’habiller   (to get dressed) also use  être  as their helping verb.

The best way to remember when starting out is to familiarize yourself with the main verbs that take  être  as its helping verb. When I was learning French, my French professors suggested the following mnemonic:  DR. AND MRS. VANDERTRAMPP.

D evenir (to come from) R evenir (to come back, to return) & M onter (to go up, climb) R ester (to stay) S ortir (to go out)

V enir (to come) A ller (to go) N aître (to be born) D escendre (to go down) E ntrer (to enter) R entrer (to return) T omber (to fall) R etourner (to return) A rriver (to arrive, to come) M ourir (to die) P artir (to leave) P asser (to pass [by])

This list is not exhaustive, but it covers the verbs that people use most often.

Here are some of these verbs conjugated in the future perfect tense:

(to go) (to go out) (to descend, to go down)

The rest of the time, verbs use  avoir  as their helping verb .

The verbs parler (to speak) , entendre (to hear) and finir (to finish) take avoir as their helping verb. So, to form the future perfect tense, we begin with the conjugated avoir  (in simple future tense) and pair it with the past participle of  parler, entendre or finir .

(to speak) (to hear) (to finish)

For a full list of past participles, check out this chart.

The Near Future Tense:   Using Aller  to Express the Future

The near future tense ( le futur proche ) is used to express something that will be happening in the very near future , and is formed by conjugating the verb aller (to go) into the present tense and pairing it with the infinitive verb .

Formation of Near Future Tense: Present tense of aller  + infinitive (main verb)

(to go)

+ Infinitive verb

Here’s a sample sentence in the near future tense:

Je vais nager. (I am going to swim.)

See here that  aller  is conjugated in the present while  nager  stays in its infinitive form, unconjugated. You would say this if you were going swimming  in the near future.

If you were going to swim sometime further in the future, your sentence would look more like this:

    Je nagerai.  (I will swim.)

This implies that you will swim sometime in the future. You can, of course, add words to be more specific, like la semaine prochaine   (next week), demain   (tomorrow) or l’été prochain   (next summer).

In French, the future can also be expressed using the present tense . You’ll often see an exchange similar to the one below:

John : Je rentre chez moi bientôt.   (I’m going home soon.) Molly : Ok, j’arrive dans cinq minutes.   (I’ll be there in five minutes.)

Notice here that no future tense is being used in the French. When you use a word that implies the future, like bientôt   (soon), dans cinq minutes   (in five minutes), l’an prochain   (next year) or demain   (tomorrow), you’re already expressing the future within the sentence.

Therefore, in spoken French, the future is sometimes completely left off.

The best way to learn how to use the future   tense is to practice. Here are some good ways to do so:

  • Find a language partner who’s a native French speaker. This is especially crucial when it comes to distinguishing between using the present tense to express the future and the future tense itself. Learning how and when to use these tenses in everyday conversation is crucial, and will help your writing skills , as well.
  • This BBC future tense article has great comprehensive examples of how and when to use the future tense ,  the present tense as the future and the near future tense.
  • Use ToLearnFrench.com to practice the future tense with quizzes.
  • Watch French television or movies and  listen to podcasts in French . Listen for the future   tense and take note of both how it’s used and when native speakers use it, such as on news podcasts when the hosts try to predict what will happen next.

So try out some of these methods, listen to how the future tense is used and then try it for yourself.

Who knows, perhaps in l’avenir  with all of your forthcoming knowledge, you  will  want to talk about what’s to come in your career, family life and romantic relationships.

ChatGPT: Everything you need to know about the AI-powered chatbot

ChatGPT welcome screen

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s text-generating AI chatbot, has taken the world by storm since its launch in November 2022. What started as a tool to hyper-charge productivity through writing essays and code with short text prompts has evolved into a behemoth used by more than 92% of Fortune 500 companies .

That growth has propelled OpenAI itself into becoming one of the most-hyped companies in recent memory. And its latest partnership with Apple for its upcoming generative AI offering, Apple Intelligence, has given the company another significant bump in the AI race.

2024 also saw the release of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s new flagship omni model for ChatGPT. GPT-4o is now the default free model, complete with voice and vision capabilities. But after demoing GPT-4o, OpenAI paused one of its voices , Sky, after allegations that it was mimicking Scarlett Johansson’s voice in “Her.”

OpenAI is facing internal drama, including the sizable exit of co-founder and longtime chief scientist Ilya Sutskever as the company dissolved its Superalignment team. OpenAI is also facing a lawsuit from Alden Global Capital-owned newspapers , including the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, for alleged copyright infringement, following a similar suit filed by The New York Times last year.

Here’s a timeline of ChatGPT product updates and releases, starting with the latest, which we’ve been updating throughout the year. And if you have any other questions, check out our ChatGPT FAQ here.

Our first impressions of ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode

TechCrunch’s Maxwell Zeff has been playing around with OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode, in what he describes as “the most convincing taste I’ve had of an AI-powered future yet.” Compared to Siri or Alexa, Advanced Voice Mode stands out with faster response times, unique answers and the ability to answer complex questions. But the feature falls short as an effective replacement for virtual assistants.

OpenAI shuts down election influence operation that used ChatGPT

OpenAI has banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts linked to an Iranian influence operation that was generating content about the U.S. presidential election. OpenAI finds that GPT-4o does some weird stuff sometimes

OpenAI has found that GPT-4o, which powers the recently launched alpha of Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT, can behave in strange ways. In a new “red teaming” report, OpenAI reveals some of GPT-4o’s weirder quirks, like mimicking the voice of the person speaking to it or randomly shouting in the middle of a conversation.

ChatGPT’s mobile app reports its biggest month yet

ChatGPT no longer requires an account — but there’s a catch

You can now use ChatGPT without signing up for an account , but it won’t be quite the same experience. You won’t be able to save or share chats, use custom instructions, or other features associated with a persistent account. This version of ChatGPT will have “slightly more restrictive content policies,” according to OpenAI. When TechCrunch asked for more details, however, the response was unclear:

“The signed out experience will benefit from the existing safety mitigations that are already built into the model, such as refusing to generate harmful content. In addition to these existing mitigations, we are also implementing additional safeguards specifically designed to address other forms of content that may be inappropriate for a signed out experience,” a spokesperson said.

OpenAI’s chatbot store is filling up with spam

TechCrunch found that the OpenAI’s GPT Store is flooded with bizarre, potentially copyright-infringing GPTs . A cursory search pulls up GPTs that claim to generate art in the style of Disney and Marvel properties, but serve as little more than funnels to third-party paid services and advertise themselves as being able to bypass AI content detection tools.

The New York Times responds to OpenAI’s claims that it “hacked” ChatGPT for its copyright lawsuit

In a court filing opposing OpenAI’s motion to dismiss The New York Times’ lawsuit alleging copyright infringement, the newspaper asserted that “OpenAI’s attention-grabbing claim that The Times ‘hacked’ its products is as irrelevant as it is false.” The New York Times also claimed that some users of ChatGPT used the tool to bypass its paywalls.

ChatGPT will now remember — and forget — things you tell it to

As part of a test, OpenAI began rolling out new “memory” controls for a small portion of ChatGPT free and paid users, with a broader rollout to follow. The controls let you tell ChatGPT explicitly to remember something, see what it remembers or turn off its memory altogether. Note that deleting a chat from chat history won’t erase ChatGPT’s or a custom GPT’s memories — you must delete the memory itself.

GPT-4 Turbo also got a new preview model for API use, which includes an interesting fix that aims to reduce “laziness” that users have experienced.

OpenAI announces partnership with Arizona State University

OpenAI is forming a Collective Alignment team of researchers and engineers to create a system for collecting and “encoding” public input on its models’ behaviors into OpenAI products and services. OpenAI unveils plan to combat election misinformation

In a blog post, OpenAI announced users will not be allowed to build applications for political campaigning and lobbying until the company works out how effective their tools are for “personalized persuasion.”

Users will also be banned from creating chatbots that impersonate candidates or government institutions, and from using OpenAI tools to misrepresent the voting process or otherwise discourage voting.

The company is also testing out a tool that detects DALL-E generated images and will incorporate access to real-time news, with attribution, in ChatGPT.

Developing AI models would be “impossible” without copyrighted materials, OpenAI claims

Following a proposed ban on using news publications and books to train AI chatbots in the U.K., OpenAI submitted a plea to the House of Lords communications and digital committee. OpenAI argued that it would be “impossible” to train AI models without using copyrighted materials, and that they believe copyright law “does not forbid training.”

OpenAI claims The New York Times’ copyright lawsuit is without merit

OpenAI published a public response to The New York Times’s lawsuit against them and Microsoft for allegedly violating copyright law, claiming that the case is without merit.

In the response , OpenAI reiterates its view that training AI models using publicly available data from the web is fair use. It also makes the case that regurgitation is less likely to occur with training data from a single source and places the onus on users to “act responsibly.”

We build AI to empower people, including journalists. Our position on the @nytimes lawsuit: • Training is fair use, but we provide an opt-out • "Regurgitation" is a rare bug we're driving to zero • The New York Times is not telling the full story https://t.co/S6fSaDsfKb — OpenAI (@OpenAI) January 8, 2024

OpenAI’s app store for GPTs planned to launch next week

After being delayed in December , OpenAI plans to launch its GPT Store sometime in the coming week, according to an email viewed by TechCrunch. OpenAI says developers building GPTs will have to review the company’s updated usage policies and GPT brand guidelines to ensure their GPTs are compliant before they’re eligible for listing in the GPT Store. OpenAI’s update notably didn’t include any information on the expected monetization opportunities for developers listing their apps on the storefront.

In an email, OpenAI detailed an incoming update to its terms, including changing the OpenAI entity providing services to EEA and Swiss residents to OpenAI Ireland Limited. What is ChatGPT? How does it work?

ChatGPT is a general-purpose chatbot that uses artificial intelligence to generate text after a user enters a prompt, developed by tech startup OpenAI . The chatbot uses GPT-4, a large language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text.

When did ChatGPT get released?

November 30, 2022 is when ChatGPT was released for public use.

What is the latest version of ChatGPT?

Both the free version of ChatGPT and the paid ChatGPT Plus are regularly updated with new GPT models. The most recent model is GPT-4o .

Can I use ChatGPT for free?

There is a free version of ChatGPT that only requires a sign-in in addition to the paid version, ChatGPT Plus .

Who uses ChatGPT?

Anyone can use ChatGPT! More and more tech companies and search engines are utilizing the chatbot to automate text or quickly answer user questions/concerns.

What companies use ChatGPT?

Multiple enterprises utilize ChatGPT, although others may limit the use of the AI-powered tool .

Most recently, Microsoft announced at it’s 2023 Build conference that it is integrating it ChatGPT-based Bing experience into Windows 11. A Brooklyn-based 3D display startup Looking Glass utilizes ChatGPT to produce holograms you can communicate with by using ChatGPT.  And nonprofit organization Solana officially integrated the chatbot into its network with a ChatGPT plug-in geared toward end users to help onboard into the web3 space.

What does GPT mean in ChatGPT?

GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer.

What is the difference between ChatGPT and a chatbot?

A chatbot can be any software/system that holds dialogue with you/a person but doesn’t necessarily have to be AI-powered. For example, there are chatbots that are rules-based in the sense that they’ll give canned responses to questions.

ChatGPT is AI-powered and utilizes LLM technology to generate text after a prompt.

Can ChatGPT write essays?

Can chatgpt commit libel.

Due to the nature of how these models work , they don’t know or care whether something is true, only that it looks true. That’s a problem when you’re using it to do your homework, sure, but when it accuses you of a crime you didn’t commit, that may well at this point be libel.

We will see how handling troubling statements produced by ChatGPT will play out over the next few months as tech and legal experts attempt to tackle the fastest moving target in the industry.

Does ChatGPT have an app?

Yes, there is a free ChatGPT mobile app for iOS and Android users.

What is the ChatGPT character limit?

It’s not documented anywhere that ChatGPT has a character limit. However, users have noted that there are some character limitations after around 500 words.

Does ChatGPT have an API?

Yes, it was released March 1, 2023.

What are some sample everyday uses for ChatGPT?

Everyday examples include programing, scripts, email replies, listicles, blog ideas, summarization, etc.

What are some advanced uses for ChatGPT?

Advanced use examples include debugging code, programming languages, scientific concepts, complex problem solving, etc.

How good is ChatGPT at writing code?

It depends on the nature of the program. While ChatGPT can write workable Python code, it can’t necessarily program an entire app’s worth of code. That’s because ChatGPT lacks context awareness — in other words, the generated code isn’t always appropriate for the specific context in which it’s being used.

Can you save a ChatGPT chat?

Yes. OpenAI allows users to save chats in the ChatGPT interface, stored in the sidebar of the screen. There are no built-in sharing features yet.

Are there alternatives to ChatGPT?

Yes. There are multiple AI-powered chatbot competitors such as Together , Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude , and developers are creating open source alternatives .

How does ChatGPT handle data privacy?

OpenAI has said that individuals in “certain jurisdictions” (such as the EU) can object to the processing of their personal information by its AI models by filling out  this form . This includes the ability to make requests for deletion of AI-generated references about you. Although OpenAI notes it may not grant every request since it must balance privacy requests against freedom of expression “in accordance with applicable laws”.

The web form for making a deletion of data about you request is entitled “ OpenAI Personal Data Removal Request ”.

In its privacy policy, the ChatGPT maker makes a passing acknowledgement of the objection requirements attached to relying on “legitimate interest” (LI), pointing users towards more information about requesting an opt out — when it writes: “See here  for instructions on how you can opt out of our use of your information to train our models.”

What controversies have surrounded ChatGPT?

Recently, Discord announced that it had integrated OpenAI’s technology into its bot named Clyde where two users tricked Clyde into providing them with instructions for making the illegal drug methamphetamine (meth) and the incendiary mixture napalm.

An Australian mayor has publicly announced he may sue OpenAI for defamation due to ChatGPT’s false claims that he had served time in prison for bribery. This would be the first defamation lawsuit against the text-generating service.

CNET found itself in the midst of controversy after Futurism reported the publication was publishing articles under a mysterious byline completely generated by AI. The private equity company that owns CNET, Red Ventures, was accused of using ChatGPT for SEO farming, even if the information was incorrect.

Several major school systems and colleges, including New York City Public Schools , have banned ChatGPT from their networks and devices. They claim that the AI impedes the learning process by promoting plagiarism and misinformation, a claim that not every educator agrees with .

There have also been cases of ChatGPT accusing individuals of false crimes .

Where can I find examples of ChatGPT prompts?

Several marketplaces host and provide ChatGPT prompts, either for free or for a nominal fee. One is PromptBase . Another is ChatX . More launch every day.

Can ChatGPT be detected?

Poorly. Several tools claim to detect ChatGPT-generated text, but in our tests , they’re inconsistent at best.

Are ChatGPT chats public?

No. But OpenAI recently disclosed a bug, since fixed, that exposed the titles of some users’ conversations to other people on the service.

What lawsuits are there surrounding ChatGPT?

None specifically targeting ChatGPT. But OpenAI is involved in at least one lawsuit that has implications for AI systems trained on publicly available data, which would touch on ChatGPT.

Are there issues regarding plagiarism with ChatGPT?

Yes. Text-generating AI models like ChatGPT have a tendency to regurgitate content from their training data.

Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.

Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.

Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.

Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.

He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.

He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.”
