A Celebration in Blossoms: Perfecting Your Graduation Flower Selection

Joyful young woman holding a certificate and a bouquet of roses, celebrating graduation or achievement indoors with a bright, modern background.

Graduation is a pivotal moment, a culmination of hard work and dedication, deserving of a grand celebration.

Celebrate with Blossoms: Choosing Perfect Graduation Flowers

One of the most timeless ways to celebrate this significant milestone is through the gift of flowers. With their vibrant colors and diverse meanings, flowers allow us to express our pride, admiration, and best wishes for the graduate. However, choosing the perfect graduation bouquet can be more complex than it seems. It requires careful thought, considering factors like your presence at the ceremony, your relationship with the graduate, the level of graduation, and the specific message you want to convey. By understanding these elements, you can select flowers that perfectly encapsulate your sentiments and enhance the joy of the occasion.

This guide will provide you with comprehensive insights into each of these factors, offering practical tips and examples to help you navigate your flower selection. Whether you're celebrating a high school or college graduation, whether you're a parent, friend, or mentor, there's a perfect flower for every scenario.

Will You Be There? Selecting Flowers Based on Ceremony Attendance

Your presence or absence at the graduation ceremony can influence your choice of flowers. If you're attending, you have the opportunity to present a fresh, vibrant bouquet that the graduate can carry during the celebrations. If you're unable to attend, consider sending a beautiful arrangement that can be delivered to their home.

Hand-Tied Bouquet : A hand-tied bouquet is a versatile and convenient option. Easy to carry and display, it can be customized to include the graduate's favorite flowers or those that match the school's colors. This personal touch can make your gift even more special, demonstrating your thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Corsage or Boutonniere : For a more intimate and personalized gift, consider a corsage or boutonniere. These miniature floral arrangements can be worn on the graduate's wrist or lapel, adding a touch of elegance to their graduation attire. They're not just beautiful accessories but also meaningful symbols of achievement and celebration. Flower Lei : A flower lei brings a sense of joy and festivity to the occasion. These garlands of flowers, inspired by Hawaiian tradition, can be draped around the graduate's neck, creating a vibrant and memorable accessory. While they're often made with orchids or plumerias, you can customize your lei with any durable, long-lasting flower that the graduate likes.

It's All Relative: Choosing Flowers Based on Your Relationship

Your relationship with the graduate plays a significant role in your choice of flowers. Different relationships call for different types of bouquets, each carrying its unique message of love, pride, and congratulations.

For Parents : As a parent, your bouquet should embody your immense love and pride. Roses, being traditional symbols of love and admiration, make a great choice. You could choose roses in the school's colors or in your child's favorite shades, making the bouquet deeply personal and meaningful. For Friends : If you're a friend of the graduate, you'll want to choose something that reflects your camaraderie and shared joy. Sunflowers, symbolizing adoration and loyalty, or daisies, representing cheerfulness, can capture the spirit of friendship and celebration. For Mentors or Teachers : For mentors or teachers, the bouquet should convey respect and admiration. Orchids, with their exotic beauty and symbolic associations with respect and dignity, can be an apt choice. Alternatively, lilies, symbolizing ambition and determination, can reflect your recognition of the student's hard work and potential.

High School or College? Selecting Flowers Based on the Graduation Level

The level of graduation, whether high school or college, can guide your selection of flowers. Each stage of academic achievement has its unique significance, and your flowers can mirror this transition.

High School Graduation : High school graduation marks the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Flowers like gerbera daisies, with their vibrant colors and joyful connotation, can perfectly capture this mix of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. College Graduation : A college graduation signifies the culmination of years of dedicated study and personal growth. Sophisticated flowers like tulips or roses, symbolizing respect and accomplishment, can reflect the magnitude of this achievement. Postgraduate Graduation : For postgraduate graduations, consider flowers that convey deep respect and admiration. Orchids, with their rare beauty and association with strength and success, or lilies, symbolizing passion and ambition, can be fitting choices.

Conveying Your Message: Picking Flowers Based on Sentiments

The bouquet you choose can communicate a specific sentiment to the graduate. Whether it's pride, congratulations, or good luck, there's a flower for every message.

Pride : If you want to express your pride in the graduate's achievements, irises, which symbolize admiration and respect, can be a fitting choice. Their striking colors and elegant form make them a standout addition to any bouquet. Congratulations : To simply say 'congratulations', opt for lilies. These majestic flowers symbolize ambition and determination, making them align perfectly with the spirit of graduation. Their large, vibrant blooms also add a touch of grandeur to your bouquet. Good Luck : To wish the graduate good luck in their future endeavors, consider sunflowers. These bright, cheerful flowers symbolize adoration and loyalty, offering a positive and uplifting message to the graduate as they embark on their next journey.

Setting the Party Mood: Floral Ideas for the Graduation Bash

Beyond gifting, flowers can also enhance the decor at a graduation party, contributing to a festive and joyous atmosphere.

Table Centerpieces : Floral centerpieces can transform your party tables from plain to stunning. Choose flowers that match the party's color scheme or the graduate's favorite blooms for a personal touch. Floral Wall : A floral wall can serve as an enchanting backdrop for photos, ensuring memorable snapshots of the celebration. You can mix and match different flowers for a vibrant effect or stick to one type for a more elegant look. Flower Cake Topper : Consider using edible flowers as a unique cake topper. This creative twist can add a touch of elegance to your dessert table and serve as a conversation starter among guests.

The Thought That Counts: Why Intentionality Matters

When it comes to gifting flowers, the thought behind the bouquet is just as important as the flowers themselves. An intentional gift considers the recipient's preferences and the symbolism of the chosen flowers.

Birth Month Flowers : Gifting flowers associated with the graduate's birth month adds a personal touch to your bouquet. It shows that you've put thought into the gift, making it more meaningful. Favorite Flowers : Including the graduate's favorite flowers in your bouquet shows your attention to their likes. This personalization can make your gift stand out, making the graduate feel special and appreciated. Handpicked Bouquet : A handpicked bouquet, assembled with flowers that have special meanings, can be a heartfelt gift. It shows your effort and consideration, making the bouquet not just a gift, but a symbol of your sentiments.

Luxury Blooms: Upscale Flower Ideas

Occasionally, a celebration calls for a bit of luxury. Here are some upscale flower ideas for those wanting to splurge on their gift:

Exotic Orchids : Exotic orchids are a luxurious choice, symbolizing strength, beauty, and love. Their rarity and unique beauty can make your bouquet stand out, adding a touch of sophistication to your gift. Oversized Bouquet : An oversized bouquet can make a grand statement of your pride and congratulations. Filled with a variety of blooms, this extravagant gift can be a stunning surprise for the graduate. BloomsyBox Deluxe Subscription : A BloomsyBox Deluxe Subscription delivers luxury right to the graduate's doorstep. With handpicked, high-quality flowers delivered regularly, it's a gift that keeps on giving.

Soft and Cozy: Comfort Gifts with a Floral Touch

Flower-themed gifts need not be limited to fresh blooms. Here are some cozy, comfort gifts that incorporate a floral theme:

Floral-Themed Throw Blanket : A soft, floral-themed throw blanket can be both practical and thoughtful. It's a cozy gift that the graduate can use and cherish, reminding them of their achievement and your support.

Floral-Printed Pajamas : Floral-printed pajamas can be a fun and comfortable gift. They're a way of incorporating the joy of flowers into everyday life, making bedtime a bit more cheerful. BloomsyBox's Dried Flower Wreaths : Beautiful and long-lasting, dried flower wreaths from BloomsyBox can add warmth and charm to any space.

Now that we've explored various ways to choose graduation flowers, let's highlight BloomsyBox. This flower subscription service stands out for its commitment to delivering fresh, high-quality blooms directly from sustainable farms. As we conclude this guide, remember that the most significant aspect of gifting flowers is the love and sincerity behind the gesture. Flowers are merely an expression of your feelings. Whether it's a single rose or a luxurious bouquet, as long as it's given with love, it will surely touch the heart of the receiver.

Best Flowers For Graduations

Best Flowers For Graduations

Celebrating a graduation is a special time to mark major academic achievements and the bright futures ahead for graduates. While many may default to gifts or trinkets,  thoughtfully chosen flowers  can create a profoundly heartfelt gift representing pride, appreciation, and support for the graduate. But with so many beautiful bloom varieties available, how can you discern the  optimal floral selections  to craft bouquets and arrangements that perfectly reflect this major life milestone?

When determining the ideal flowers to gift graduates, Lily's Florist , your flowers delivery expert, believes it's important to consider attributes beyond superficial aesthetic appeal. The symbolic meanings behind flowers - signifying concepts like future success, prosperity, gratitude or unwavering love - carry deep significance. Their lush colors can align to school colors in a display of institutional pride. Factors like affordability, availability and longevity also come into play when selecting the best blossoms.

View our entire range of graduation flowers .

What to Consider When Choosing Graduation Flowers

When selecting the perfect floral arrangements to honor graduates, an intentional approach pays dividends in crafting meaningful gifts. Beyond basic aesthetic appeal of colorful blooms, gift-givers should thoughtfully consider multiple factors that imbue arrangements with deeper significance:

Symbolism and Meaning

Every flower carries diverse cultural connotations, lore and symbolism. Research floral meanings connected to concepts like achievement, prosperity, gratitude, hope or pride. Prioritize selections expressing sentiments you wish to convey to the graduate like:

  • Roses flowers for love, appreciation, gratitude
  • Orchids for beauty, luxury, achievement
  • Lilies for rebirth, purity, transitions

Crafting bouquets around symbolic meanings creates an embedded message within the materials - elevating the gift beyond mere decoration into a heartfelt display of support during a pinnacle life moment.

Color Scheme

Carefully select, with your online or bricks and mortar florist, floral hues aligning to the graduate's university colors or preference palette. School color flowers display pride in the institution while personalized palettes cater to individual tastes. Both forge an enhanced connection through thoughtful color coordination.

Durability and Longevity

Maximize the gift's impact by choosing long lasting flowers with longevity to embellish the graduate's achievement over an extended period. Research best picks for sustained vase life after cutting and care tips to maximize enjoyment of the flowers.

Allergies and Sensitivities

Determine if the recipient has any known pollen allergies or plant sensitivities then avoid those varieties, prioritizing hypoallergenic selections. This precaution ensures the gift delights rather than aggravates.

As a special splurge gift, loosening budget constraints makes lavish statements possible - but beautiful bouquets can take shape at every price point. Establish you maximum budget, then scout flowers providing maximum impact within set spending limitations. In 2024, due to inflation, flowers are more expensive than they have ever been.

Seasonality and Availability

Confirm flower availability and peak seasons aligning to graduation timeframes. This ensures procurement access to top choices for timely gift-giving celebrating momentous accomplishments.

As the definitive flower for expressing love and appreciation,  roses  reign as a time-honored classic floral gift ideal for congratulating graduates. Available in a spectrum symbolic hues like:

  • Red roses  conveying deep love, respect and courage
  • Yellow roses  signifying joy, friendship and promise of new beginnings
  • White roses  representing innocence, purity and honor
  • Pink roses  meaning gentleness, grace, admiration
  • Lavender roses  indicating enchantment and majestic charm
  • Orange roses  displaying desire, enthusiasm and passion

Beyond conveying nuanced resonant messages through their extensive color variations, roses communicate devotion and heartfelt pride for graduate's dedication in pursuing their academic goals. They additionally symbolize good luck regarding future endeavors.

An added benefit stems from roses' reputation as one of the longest-lasting cut flowers, sustaining their lush petaled beauty for over a week when properly cared for. This longevity elongates their gift impact - perpetually reminding graduates of loved ones' floral congratulations.

Whether presented as classic wrapped bouquets, contemporary floral arrangements or even preserved forever in resin, roses rank as the quintessential flower selection for declaring doting pride in graduates' scholastic achievements on this monumental life occasion. Their versatility even adapts them as boutonniere or corsage accents on graduation gowns and suits - cementing roses' top tier floral gifting status.

Beyond beauty alone,  orchids  impart sophisticated elegance representing scholarly success and singular achievements honored during graduations. Their global distributions feature diverse distinctive varieties including:

  • Phalaenopsis  displaying charming arched sprays orchids for centerpieces
  • Exquisitely patterned  Dendrobium  orchids arranged in bountiful bouquets
  • Cymbidium orchids  clustered in dramatic bunches to configure corsages

Orchids visually convey exceptionality - mirroring exceptional scholars transitioning into promising ventures beyond academic halls. Their symbolism emphasizes facets like:

These meaningful connotations connect to graduations and the determination required to earn degrees, the opportunity and abundant potential now accessible to graduates, as well as our profound awe at their impressive efforts.

Orchids additionally boast durability as one of the longest lasting cut flowers, sustaining 10-20 days with proper hydration and nurturing - perpetuating the gift. As a hypoallergenic variety, orchids minimize risks of triggering pollen allergies - enabling more recipients to enjoy their regal beauty.

Whether clustered in corsages pinned with pride to lapels, cascading in bouquet arrangements or towering in statement centerpieces, orchids forge profoundly personal graduate gifts through their symbolic celebrations of ambitious resilience leading to momentous achievement.

Lilies  impart refined sophistication perfect for denoting scholars crossing the threshold into future possibility - extolling graduates limitless potential ahead. Varieties like:

  • Regal white  Oriental lilies  symbolizing honor, prosperity and promise
  • Vibrant pink  Asiatic lilies  representing abundance and pride
  • Gleaming yellow  Trumpet lilies  heralding victory and possibility

Beyond varied symbolic color meanings, lilies share connotations of rebirth and renewal connected to graduating into new life adventures beyond campus confines.

They additionally boast exceptional vase life endurance, thriving 7-10 days post-cutting with proper hydration. Lilies release a light sweetly floral perfume infusing arrangements with joyful fragrance.

Feature lilies in mixed bouquets pronouncing possibility or massed Statement centerpieces celebrating accomplishments through decorative grandiosity. Their elegance adapts equally well as single-stem boutonniere accents worn with refined pride.

For grad gifts and related celebrations, lush lilies reinforce positive emotional resonance - repeatedly reminding recipients of new worlds unfolding before them as initial steps across freshly minted degrees progress into bright flowing futures.

Radiating the warm glow of golden hour sunshine, cheerful  sunflowers  make winning graduation gifts - conveying joy, optimism and encouragement to grads during major life milestones. Their symbolism emphasizes:

The buoyant blooms express pride and admiration for hard-working graduates now basking in scholastic success. Sunflowers convey excited anticipation of prosperous adventures ahead.

Their impressively sized flower heads - spanning 5-12 inches - make powerful statements in arrangements. Sunflowers infuse décor with positivity and their sheer vibrancy energizes any space. Their versatility also enables creative pairings with complementary flowers in mixed bouquets.

Despite their outsized floral impact, sunflowers rate as budget-friendly selections helping keep gift costs down while their week-long vase life delivers extended enjoyment.

Capture a grad's beaming smile in floral form with sunflowers. The cheerful blooms fuel optimism and confidence to illuminate newly minted graduates' paths forward with prosperity, purpose and meaningful connection.

Beloved for their ruffled, vibrantly colorful petals and impressive durability, frilly  carnations  carry symbolism ideally suited for graduation gifting:

Their extensive color spectrum spans every shade - enabling personalized arrangements aligning to school colors or the graduate's favorite hues. This versatility empowers truly customized floral creations.

Budget-friendly carnations minimize costs while maximizing impact - their full, lush blooms crafting impressive statement displays. Carnations' notable vase life enduring 14+ days prolongs their gift presence.

Use carnations massed by the dozen in bouquet centerpieces or corsages with frilly flowers brimming down sides. As boutonniere accents, mini carnations add textural interest to lapels. Insert colorful carnations among other flowers to amplify arrangements.

At once nostalgic and forward-looking, gifting carnations for graduations checks all the boxes - conveying heartfelt congratulations, customized displays and longevity perpetuating proud memories of monumental milestones. Their sweet simplicity says so much.

Daisies & Chrysanthemums

Channeling sweetly nostalgic charm, cheerfully bright  daisies  and  chrysanthemums  make ideal graduation gift flowers - positively pronouncing new beginnings ahead for scholars.

Daisies symbolize:

These meaningful connotations connect to graduates embarking on fresh starts and bright futures beyond campus confines.

A budget-friendly flower variety, vibrantly hued Gerbera daisies add ebullient pops of color to arrangements - available in wide ranging including classic white, sunny yellow, passionate red and calming lavender. Read more on Red Flowers Symbolism .

In contrast, hardy  chrysanthemums  convey truths, optimism and joyfulness through modest curved blooms promising perseverance and good fortune for the road ahead. They last over two weeks as cut flowers - perpetuating positive presence.

Feature perky daisies and steadfast chrysanthemums in mixed bouquets, decorative centerpieces or miniature corsages. These petite powerhouse blooms pronounce profound goodwill for graduates stepping into promising new life adventures.

Flower Arrangement Ideas for Graduations

Transforming floral gifts into commemorative keepsakes, creative arrangements display graduates' scholastic dedication through artistic botanical craftsmanship.

Hand-tied bouquets  bind stems in ribbon clutching fabric for a rustic, crafted aesthetic. Shape rounded domes or trailing tails using roses, ranunculus, spray roses and seeded eucalyptus accents.

Ceremony presentation bouquets  arrange symbolic white flowers like roses or Oriental lilies mingled with Ivy vines and wax flower filler secured in elegant ribbon bindings. Learn more about White Flowers and their Symbolism .

To add personal touches on gowns, craft miniature corsages and boutonnieres feature einzel blooms accented with bits of greenery in spiraled wire or mini nosegays with ribbon ties.

Festive graduation reception  centerpieces  gathered in vases or bowls filled high with celebratory sunflowers, snapdragons, stock and hypericum berries to fuel convivial joy.

Import exotic island vibes with floral  leis  - orchid stems threaded through a garland necklace or haku lei headpieces crafted from vines, leaves and buds wearing achievement like a crown.

Personalize arrangements  using meaningful symbolic botanicals in the graduate's preferred colors - white calla lilies representing transitions to new chapters or sunflowers fueling optimism for adventures ahead. Custom creations cement connections, commemorating monumental milestones.

Your Essential Guide to the Best Flowers for Graduation

Flowers are flourishing, in more ways than one!  5,930 companies  across the United States produced flowers in 2020, up from 5,198 in 2019.

One reason why flower sales are booming is that flowers are becoming a popular gift for graduation. Yet you shouldn’t just run down to the flower shop and buy the first flowers you see. Flowers for graduation can become a powerful gift if you get the facts.

What flowers have the most powerful symbolic meanings? What arrangements should you select for flowers for a graduate? How should you present your flowers to your recipient?

Answer these questions and you can select the perfect flowers for your loved one. Here is your quick guide.

Find the Right Symbolic Messages

Many flowers have  symbolic meanings  that can make your gift more significant. Take a look at a few different flowers and pair them together to send a message to the graduate in your life.

Roses are a traditional symbol of love and beauty. They are a good choice if you are giving flowers to your significant other or child.

Red roses  usually signify romantic love while white roses indicate a new beginning. Yellow and orange roses are rare, but they signify friendship and enthusiasm.

Carnations are another popular graduation flower. They indicate admiration and support, and white carnations signify pure love.

Orchids offer textured and thick petals that catch the eye. Red orchids signify courage and strength in the face of challenges, so they are a good flower to pair with carnations. If you want a more interesting color choice, you can choose green orchids, which signify good fortune.

If you’re looking for less common flowers, you can give ranunculuses. Giving someone a ranunculus indicates that you are charmed by the recipient.

If you want to send flowers to a graduate who lives away from you, you can send pink camellias. They symbolize a longing for another person you admire.

Flowers for guys include birds of paradise. You can also select flowers with scents similar to colognes that your graduate likes.

Select Beautiful Colors

You can pick flowers in the colors of your graduate’s school logo. You can also select a group of flowers with your graduate’s favorite colors.

Try not to select flowers with the exact same colors as each other. If you want to select blue flowers, try finding a few different hues of blue. This creates a more interesting and less intense color palette.

Black flowers are a traditional symbol of death, so you should avoid giving them to your graduate. If their school logo has black in it, you can replicate the color with purple flowers that look black, such as dahlias. You can also attach black banners or put your flowers in a black basket.

Pick the Perfect Arrangement

Bouquets are common flower arrangements for graduations, but you are not required to give one to your graduate. Leis are flower garlands associated with celebrations and Hawaiian culture. They are big enough to wear around the neck or top of the head.

There are no special flowers for leis, though many people like to put carnations in theirs. You can also put plumerias in a lei for a tropical and vibrant aesthetic.

Wreaths are similar to leis in that they are circular flower arrangements. However, wreaths are traditionally hung from doors or placed on tables, though they can be worn on the head. You can give a gift to your graduate if they are looking for something to decorate their home.

Standing sprays and cross arrangements are traditionally for funerals, not graduations. If you want to add support to your flowers, you can put the arrangement in a vase or basket. This also makes it easy for your graduate to transport the flowers to their home.

Present Your Flowers

You can present flowers for college graduation whenever you want. You can give it to them before they graduate from school, which can build their confidence to finish their school year strong. You can also give it to them after they receive their degree.

Schools traditionally give single roses to graduates after they get their degrees. If you have a bouquet you want to present, you may want to wait until after the graduation ceremony to present it.

You can present flowers alongside other things. You can attach a card, and you should do so if you are not going to present the flowers to the graduate in person.

Mention who the flowers came from and wish the graduate well. If your graduate is unfamiliar with tending to flowers, you may want to attach some instructions on how to keep the flowers alive.

You can also attach balloons, which can add color and texture clashes to your arrangement. You can pin your flowers onto a fruit or snack basket as well. If you want to add some decorations, you can attach willow branches and plastic butterflies to your flowers.

Buy the Right Flowers for Graduation

Flowers for graduation can mean a few different things. You should find flowers with the right messages, offering love and support to your loved one. You should also create an interesting combination of hues and colors.

Bouquets are a good basic arrangement, but you can give your graduate a lei or a group of flowers in a basket. Feel free to attach cards, snacks, and other trinkets to your arrangement.

Graduation Etiquette

Graduation Gifts

Whether it’s for a high school diploma, bachelors, or master’s degree, here is a must-follow etiquette tip: if you’re invited to the ceremony or are attending a graduation party, send or bring a gift. If you can’t attend in person, but wish to send a gift, give it near in date to the graduation, or have it delivered in advance with instructions to be opened on the day. While some parents splurge on a car or computer, many choose less elaborate, but still meaningful, gifts to commemorate the day. Jewelry (often engraved with the date), books, cash or stock certificates, luggage, a camera, or graduation rings are all presents the graduate will appreciate in the years ahead. Flowers are also a thoughtful choice—it’s tradition to present the graduate with a corsage or boutonnière prior to the graduation ceremony, or a bouquet of flowers afterwards. If you can’t be there in person for graduation celebrations, a bouquet or arrangement delivered to the graduate’s home let’s her know that you are there in spirit.

Graduation Ceremony Invitations

We are only allotted six invitations to my son’s high school graduation ceremony. How should I break the news to close family members that they will not be able to attend? Is it acceptable for me to invite them to the party even though they cannot attend the graduation?

This is a common dilemma during graduation season. Explain the situation to relatives. Most will be understanding. Devise some kind of plan—perhaps draw names out of a hat. If necessary, consider inviting one member from each set of grandparents to attend. Invite everyone to attend the party after graduation and be sure to share all of the pictures.

The Graduation Party Guest List

I want to throw my son a high-school graduation party and invite his friends and our relatives. But I’m concerned his 18-year-old buddies might get rowdy and upset the aunts and uncles. Do I: Throw two parties. Invite everyone. And if family doesn’t like the atmosphere, they can always leave. Explain to my son beforehand that even though it’s his party, he and his friends must behave themselves.

Correct Answer: (3) High-school graduation is an exciting time for teens and parents, so there’s no reason why your relatives and son’s friends can’t celebrate together. Get your son involved in the party planning: Let him send the invitations and plan the menu. If you’re concerned about the behavior of your son and his friends, discuss this with him—ahead of time. Your son should already know the polite behavior you expect, and you should already know most of his friends. Keep your conversation positive, but make sure you cover the potential problems, such as noise level and inappropriate activities. Also, be sure that no alcoholic beverages are served to minors.

Graduation Announcements

It is an etiquette myth that if you receive a graduation announcement you must send a gift. Announcements do not equal invitations to a graduation. You are not obligated to give a gift, although you may choose to do so. Whether or not you send a present, a card or note of congratulations is always appreciated.

Pay Rs 2 Lakh, "Graduate" In Robbery: A "School" Of Criminals In Madhya Pradesh

Pay Rs 2 Lakh, 'Graduate' In Robbery: A 'School' Of Criminals In Madhya Pradesh

Children as young as 12 or 13 are sent to these villages for training

Three remote villages in Madhya Pradesh - Kadia, Gulkhedi, and Hulkhedi - have gained nationwide infamy as "nurseries" of criminals.

Situated about 117 kilometers from the state capital, Bhopal, these villages in the Rajgarh district are known for training children in the "arts of theft, robbery, and dacoity".

The police, even with their authority, are known to tread carefully in this region.

The Beginning Of Crime

Children as young as 12 or 13 are sent to these villages by their parents to be trained in criminal activities. The parents, after meeting with gang leaders, decide who can provide the best "education" for their child. To enroll in this grim curriculum, families pay a fee ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.

The children are taught various criminal skills such as pickpocketing, snatching bags in crowded places, running fast, evading the police, and also enduring beatings if caught.

After completing a year in the gang, the child's parents receive an annual payment of Rs 3 to lakh Rs 5 lakh from the gang leader.

The "Grand Theft"

These villages have produced some of the most cunning thieves, whose criminal activities have made headlines across India.

On August 8, a lavish destination wedding at the Hyatt Hotel in Jaipur took a dark turn when a minor thief made off with a bag containing jewelry worth Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 1 lakh in cash. The grand event was the wedding of the son of a Hyderabad-based businessman.

As the ceremony unfolded and the bride and groom were being blessed, the groom's mother placed her white bag nearby. Seizing the opportunity, the minor thief discreetly stole the bag, making off with the valuable contents.

After committing the theft, his gang fled to Kadiya village in the Rajgarh district. To avoid suspicion, they quickly disposed of the stolen jewelry and then attempted to blend in by participating in a Kanwar Yatra, a religious pilgrimage.

Their plan might have succeeded if not for the swift investigation that followed. Eventually, the minor involved in the theft was arrested, leading to the exposure of the entire gang.

In another incident,24-year-old Ravindra Sisodia stole a bag of jewelry at a wedding in Gurgaon in March.

In December 2023, Yash Sisodia, 22, stole a bag full of jewelry at a wedding ceremony in Delhi and fled, adding to his record of 18 cases registered against him in different states.

Challenges For Police

Jaideep Prasad, the Additional Director General of Police of Law and Order, said that the Rajgarh district is known for harboring villages where criminals operate with impunity.

"Recently, the Jaipur Police Commissioner contacted me regarding this major theft. Jewelry worth around Rs 1.5 crore was stolen at a wedding, and we had reasons to believe the culprits were from Rajgarh. We immediately developed information and began coordinating with other states," he said.

He said that these criminals are so skilled that they can assess the value of jewelry without even visiting a jeweler. Their primary activities include training children to steal, gamble, and sell liquor.

Mr Prasad emphasized that quick action and cooperation between state police forces have led to significant breakthroughs in such cases.

Another senior police officer described the challenges faced by law enforcement in these areas.

"When we have to go to these villages, we take the force of several police stations with us to apprehend the accused," Ramkumar Bhagat, the Inspector of the Boda police station, said. "These criminals are highly trained in bag lifting, bank thefts, and other crimes, often using minors under the age of 17 to carry out their activities."

He said that these villages, particularly Kadiya, Gulkhedi, and Hulkhedi, are often referred to as "nurseries" or "schools" of crime, where children are groomed from a young age to become professional thieves.

"Most of the thefts are carried out by minors, making it even more challenging to combat this deeply ingrained criminal culture," Mr Bhagat said.

These villages are shrouded in secrecy and suspicion. Women, upon seeing any outsider, pretend to be hard of hearing.

If an unfamiliar person enters the village, the residents immediately become alert, especially when they notice a camera or mobile phone. The environment is hostile to any form of scrutiny, reflecting the deep-rooted criminal culture.

These villages, located in the Pachor tehsil of Rajgarh district, have become a hotspot for police forces from across the country.

Mr Bhagat reports that over 300 children from these villages are involved in thefts at wedding ceremonies across various states. These gangs are highly organized, conducting thorough recces before adopting innovative tactics to carry out their crimes.

Wealthy individuals within the village also hire poor children for 1-2 years through bidding processes that can reach up to Rs 20 lakh.

Once trained, these children often earn five to six times the investment, after which they are released from the gangs.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

The scale of this criminal operation is massive, with more than 2,000 individuals from these villages having over 8,000 cases registered against them in police stations across the country.

These children typically come from less educated and impoverished families, but they are groomed to blend in with the affluent, enabling them to infiltrate high-profile events.

Building a sustainable home for stanford graduate school of education.

The ambitious campus construction project at Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE) is more than just a series of upgrades designed to benefit future generations of educators. It’s a comprehensive approach to sustainability that considers history and people, as well as the planet.

From preserving roofing tiles, windows and entire buildings to establishing more energy-efficient infrastructure, architects, engineers, and construction teams have been working behind the scenes to ensure that the new GSE is a greener one.

“The first step for this project was figuring out the smaller parts we wanted, and how they fit into a larger whole,” said Mousam Adcock, a principal at CAW Architects who has been involved with the project since 2017. “Sustainability was obviously a very important part of this process, and we think of it as something that can be achieved environmentally, socially, and historically.”

Reducing waste while recycling and reusing materials

One of the biggest ways that the project has minimized its ecological impact is by preserving the exterior of the historic north building (also known as the education building), which was originally designed in the 1930s. The building was effectively gutted and kept intact to make room for interior renovations.

Many other aspects of the building's original makeup also were retained, including columns, windows, and floor and roofing tiles.

“The best thing about it from a sustainability standpoint is that we’re reusing the whole structure, rather than tearing it down and pouring tons of concrete to build anew,” said Susan Vargas, senior energy management specialist at Stanford. “Doing that adaptive reuse of the massive structure of the building is the best, because all of that embodied energy in the concrete and other building materials is being retained.”

For other parts of the GSE project, which include the Barnum Center renovation and construction of a new south building adjacent to it, all nonhazardous materials were either recycled or repurposed.

“Every material that was demolished was removed and sorted in a sustainable way,” Adcock said. “Every piece of rebar in the old [north] building that was removed from the interior core was recycled, and every chunk of concrete was crushed to be reused elsewhere.”

Energy efficiency as a priority

In addition to avoiding physical waste, teams involved in the GSE construction project are building to ensure that it is as energy efficient as possible. This means updating the heating and cooling systems, and minimizing energy use while still meeting building needs.

“There’s a central energy facility on the west side of campus that generates hot water, puts it into pipes and sends it all the way around the university, and this will be the first time that the north building and Barnum will be connected to this system,” Vargas said. “When the campus was getting switched over from steam to hot water, we couldn’t do the education building because it had old steam radiators and there wasn’t a way for those to work properly with hot water.”

These hydronic radiant cooling systems, which use hot and cold water to heat and cool buildings, are more energy efficient, and will be used in the north building’s forum space from the ground up to focus conditioned air at the people level, expending less energy in higher areas of the building.

“For high-volume spaces, the most effective way to heat and cool is to have it where people are,” Adcock said. “So if it’s radiated off of the floor and about six feet up, then you don’t have to condition the whole room. This way you’re actually using less energy to condition large-volume spaces.”

Right off the bat, the new and remodeled buildings will use a third less energy than they would have if they were served by a conventional chiller and boiler, Vargas said.

Creating socially and historically sustainable spaces

Another aspect of the project’s sustainability efforts centers around the idea of social sustainability, which prioritizes the needs of people in a building. The facets of design created with people in mind have more to do with ensuring the areas are conducive to learning, working, and convening.

“We think a workspace should be pleasant, a place where people want to go,” Adcock said. “Giving almost every desk in the building access to natural light and a view outside is really important in how we design. It’s taking care of everyone’s well-being by having that access to nature.”

The outdoor areas around the buildings were also designed to be comfortable, with access to shade, which also speaks to the idea of social sustainability, she said.

When it comes to historic sustainability, she said retaining elements of the north building like the exterior, roof tiles, columns, and windows honors the original construction while modernizing the building as a whole.

“When you enter the north building lobby once it’s all renovated, it will have a lot of the old pieces from the original, but as you move toward the new forum, you transition from the historic space to the new space, and it’s quite clear where that happens,” Adcock said. “It’s a gradual transition from the old to the new, so we’re being respectful to what came before.”

Her favorite aspect of the project’s design and construction is the fact that no matter where someone is on the GSE campus, they won’t be far from the outdoors.

“Whether you’re on the first floor in the north building or the fourth floor terrace of the south building, you can instantly be connected to the fact that you’re learning and working on a beautiful campus in California.”

At the start of construction, the iconic red roof tiles of the north building were removed and stored. They’ll be reinstalled later in the project. (Photo courtesy McCarthy Construction)

Colorado woman makes history as first female ICU nurse to graduate from U.S. Army Ranger School

LONE TREE, Colo. — A Colorado woman made history last month by becoming the first woman to graduate from the U.S. Army Ranger School as an ICU nurse.

Photographs line the front wall inside one Lone Tree home. On display are the milestones, celebrations, and accomplishments of the Murphy family.

These photographs help share the legacy of the Murphys and the inspiration passed on from one generation to the next.

Molly Murphy is a fourth-generation military recruit, currently working at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as a pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) nurse. She graduated from the University of Nebraska, describing her time there as amazing.

"I did ROTC along with nursing school, and so that was kind of hard to balance, but I made a lot of good friends there and I still have them," Molly said.

When Molly first decided to go into the ROTC program, her father, Dan Murphy, thought that it would be too much.

"I was a little worried that it would be too much, but it actually kind of ended up being a benefit. She ended up getting a very regimented schedule, and then that helped her do really well in grades," Dan said.

Following graduation, Molly went on to serve as a nurse in Hawaii, where she spent four years. However, during that time, Molly faced another challenge — the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I was trying to figure out how to live on an island, how to be a nurse. I was a baby nurse and then all of a sudden I was leaving for a COVID mission," Molly said.

Molly's dedication to serving her country and others continued when she enlisted in the U.S. Army. These past several months, she has been at Ranger School , described by the Army as "one of the toughest training courses for which a Soldier can volunteer."

When asked about the hardest challenge over the years, Molly responded, "Definitely Ranger School, whoa, because a lot of those guys don't realize that I am learning their job — an entirely new job. As nurses, sometimes we forget, like Army nurses, we forget that we're soldiers first."

Molly graduated from Ranger School on July 19, becoming the first woman to graduate from the program as an ICU nurse.

"I am heading on a deployment soon, so I think it will help me there," Molly said. "You never know what you're going to run into. Just as a nurse in general, like working back-to-back 12-hour shifts, people underestimate [it], and Ranger School has helped me learn that no matter how, I can power through 12-hour shifts because I just powered through 24-hour shifts for months."

There still is room for more photos to fill this wall, but for now, Molly's family has great pride in her and this incredible accomplishment. They're ready to see what she can achieve next.

"She's kind of competed with boys her whole life," Dan said. "She did tackle football when I was totally against it, but she did it anyway. She did rugby, which I was against, but she did it anyway. And so, she's kind of been pushing the limits with boys things for a while."

First-Generation Graduate Students

The challenges of being “first” can continue into graduate school, but you are not alone! While all the resources in this guide can be beneficial for first-generation graduate students, here are a few pieces that specifically speak to what you may experience in graduate school.

At UC, first-generation college students are defined as students whose parent(s)/guardian(s) did not earn a bachelor's degree within six years after high school graduation. UC offers many support services and opportunities for first-generation students. As director of the master of applied professional studies (M.A.P.S.) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , I’ve seen firsthand how transformative a well-designed professional development program can be for graduate students. My 15 years in higher education have driven home a simple truth: Preparing graduate students for success goes well beyond academic performance. It demands a personalized and integrated approach—one that arms students with the skills, insights and networks necessary for them to excel in a variety of career paths.

When I began my career in higher education, the focus was almost entirely on preparing students for academic careers. But times have changed. Today, an increasing number of graduate students are exploring diverse career paths, both within and outside academia. This shift requires us to rethink our approach to professional development.

I remember a conversation with a talented mathematics student who had just been accepted into a Ph.D. program. She was excited but also anxious about how her skills might transfer to a nonacademic career if that became her path. She wasn’t alone in her concerns; many students I met with echoed similar sentiments across the College of Sciences and Mathematics. It became clear that our professional development offerings needed to adapt to these evolving needs.

In this piece, I’d like to share some of the strategies we’ve found most effective in creating professional development opportunities that extend beyond the classroom and help prepare students for the dynamic workforce they’re about to enter.

Unlocking potential. The starting point for any impactful professional development program is understanding where each student stands. We need to help them identify their strengths, areas for growth and the skills they may not even realize they have. In the M.A.P.S. program, students complete a variety of skills, values and strengths assessments during their first semester. These comprehensive skills assessments have been invaluable in tailoring individualized development plans.

I was surprised to discover how many students are unaware of or undervalue their existing skills. For example, one student athlete with a background in retail didn’t recognize the value of her teamwork and customer service experience in other fields. Uncovering these hidden strengths not only boosted her confidence but also provided a clear direction for her professional growth.

Moving from classroom to career. Exploring diverse career paths is essential for grad students, and it’s important not to stop at the obvious choices. Creativity in career exploration can lead to surprising and rewarding outcomes. Alumni panels, informational interviews and job shadowing are just a few ways to broaden students’ perspectives.

One of our recent M.A.P.S. graduates, for example, teamed up with another M.A.P.S. alum to launch an LLC offering basketball training camps for youth in underserved communities around the world. I spoke with him last week as they were preparing to offer a three-day camp to over 150 youth in Hong Kong. They combined their academic knowledge with their passion for sports and community service, demonstrating that a fulfilling career can be crafted by thinking outside the box.

Learning by doing. There’s no substitute for hands-on experience when it comes to applying classroom knowledge in the real world. Internships, consulting projects, volunteering and community engagement initiatives allow students to apply their skills in real-world settings. These experiences not only build practical skills but often open doors to unexpected career paths. Through short-term projects, in particular, students can engage with various industries, often leading them to opportunities they hadn’t initially considered.

Building bridges. Effective mentorship is crucial for any professional development program. By connecting students with both academic and industry professionals, we provide them with the guidance and networks that are crucial for their career advancement.

The most successful mentorships I’ve witnessed are those where both mentor and mentee bring distinct perspectives to the table. For example, one of our M.A.P.S. students with a nursing background partnered with a dean from the school of nursing and a Ph.D. candidate in computer science. Their collaboration resulted in an innovative program aimed at addressing the nurse-educator shortage—an excellent example of how interdisciplinary mentorship and collaboration can lead to groundbreaking solutions.

Communicating with confidence. The ability to effectively communicate is vital in any career, and we emphasize its importance through workshops and courses on both academic and nonacademic writing, presentation skills and digital communication. Practical, interactive sessions such as mock interviews and elevator-pitch competitions help students build the confidence they need to excel in professional settings.

Leading the way. Leadership and teamwork are essential skills for future success. We offer a variety of opportunities for students to develop such abilities through group projects, student-led initiatives and leadership roles within graduate student organizations.

At the university where I previously worked, we developed a STEM ambassador program to which students applied and interviewed for leadership roles. This program, which was eventually led entirely by students, became a powerful tool for developing leadership, event management and teamwork skills.

Making ethical and responsible decisions. Incorporating ethics and professional responsibility into our professional development programs is essential. These elements ensure that students are prepared to navigate the many complex situations they will encounter and thorny decisions they will have to make throughout their careers.

Keeping pace with technology. In today’s digital world, tech savviness is nonnegotiable, so we should offer graduate students training in relevant technology and digital tools. That could include artificial intelligence workshops, data analysis software and project management tools. In the M.A.P.S. program, introducing data visualization tools has led to significant improvements in the creativity and quality of students’ assignments and capstone projects.

Sparking innovation. Encouraging students to explore entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship is another key component of professional development. Provide resources and training for students interested in entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship. This can include workshops on business plan development, start-up funding and innovation processes. Exposure to programs such as Innovate Carolina can spark creativity and lead to successful start-up ventures for our graduates.

Balancing life and work. Graduate students are juggling numerous demands, and helping them manage these effectively is crucial. Incorporating wellness and work-life balance into our professional development offerings helps students develop sustainable career practices. We’ve seen the benefits of mindfulness and stress management workshops, which equip students with skills that will serve them well beyond graduation.

Tips for Continuous Improvement and Success

Creating an impactful professional development program is an ongoing effort. Here are a few strategies that have worked well for us:

  • Collaborate across departments. Partner with career services, alumni relations and various academic departments to build a comprehensive program.
  • Leverage alumni networks. Engage alumni to provide insights, mentorship and job opportunities for current students.
  • Stay current with industry trends. Regularly update your program to reflect the latest industry needs and trends.
  • Gather and act on feedback. Continuously seek feedback from students, alumni and employers to refine and improve your offerings.
  • Make it inclusive. Ensure that your program addresses the diverse needs of your student population, including international students and those from underrepresented groups.

Creating successful professional development programs for graduate students is both a challenge and an opportunity. It requires an ongoing commitment to integrated education, a willingness to innovate and a deep understanding of the diverse paths our students may take.

To ensure that our professional development efforts are most effective and to continue to improve them, we’ve established clear metrics for success. Key indicators include postgraduation employment rates, job satisfaction, student participation and feedback from employers.

One of my proudest moments was receiving an email from a former student who credited her professional development experiences with giving her the skills and confidence to successfully pivot her career from academia to industry. Such stories are a testament to the long-term benefits of our work.

In fact, as the M.A.P.S. program continues to evolve, I’m continually inspired by the creativity, resilience and success of our students and alumni. By providing students with robust professional development opportunities, we’re not just preparing them for their first job after graduation—we’re equipping them with the skills, mindset and networks to thrive throughout their careers.

I encourage all graduate program professionals to view professional development not as an add-on but as an integral part of graduate education. The investment we make in these programs and experiences pays off not only in the success of our students but also in the positive impact they will have in their chosen fields and society at large.

What innovative approaches to professional development have you implemented in your programs? How are you preparing your graduate students for the ever-changing workforce? Let’s keep this important conversation going and work together to create truly impactful professional development opportunities for our graduate students.
