There has been a notable rise in parents choosing to home educate their children over recent years, and particularly since the COVID pandemic.

Elective home education – carrying out a child’s education at home, outside the school system – is a legal right in the UK .

The number of families home educating is not known. There is no legal requirement to register with a local authority in England, nor is there any other register for parents choosing to home educate. This means relying on data from organisations carrying out research to gain an idea of these numbers.

The Association of Directors of Children’s Services reported that there were around 81,200 children receiving home education in England in 2021. Charity Education Otherwise reported a similar number of 83,974 in April 2021.

More recently, the Department for Education has begun conducting its own research on home education, from data reported by local authorities. It found that in January 2023, around 86,200 children were being home educated in England – and that this had risen to around 92,000 in autumn 2023.

Ways of home schooling

There are several routes that families take when choosing an educational pathway for their children.

If a child in England is already at mainstream school when their family decides to home educate, the parents must de-register their child before beginning home education. To do so parents need to send a letter of de-registration, requesting the school to remove the child from their roll.

In Scotland, a parent needs the local council’s permission to withdraw their child from school.

If a child is not at school and has not been entered into the schooling system, there is no requirement to alert the local authority and they can simply continue to educate how they want.

Some parents may choose a combination of school and home education. This is known as flexi-schooling : the child attends school part time and learns at home part time. However, this is not a right and in England, requires the agreement of the school’s headteacher.

Other educational options available to families when their children are struggling in the mainstream system include “education other than at school”. In this case, the school remains responsible for the child’s education but it is provided either at home or within a specialist provision, such as a special school.

Alternatively, a child may be educated in alternate provision . In England, this might be in a Pupil Referral Unit. This is a type of school that caters for children who are unable to attend mainstream school. This could be for a range of reasons such as illness, behavioural difficulties or neurodiverse learning styles.

Choosing home education

There are many reasons parents choose to home educate their child.

There are those who reject the mainstream way of educating and opt for a more “unconventional” approach. The parents want to focus on nurturing their children and want to be at home learning with them.

Some families talk of being unhappy with the school curriculum . They choose to home educate so they can teach the curriculum they wish and give their child or children a personalised education .

Families may choose home education because it fits best with their own lifestyle. Work and life commitments can dictate how the children learn and some families choose to do it while travelling, which is known as roadschooling or worldschooling .

Girl looks sad outside large building

Some families feel they do not have a choice but to home educate. They have been termed in some research as “last resort” home educators.

Their child might have special educational needs or disabilities that their school is unable to meet adequately. Their child might be being bullied at school, or they might be highly gifted, meaning that they or their parents feel the school curriculum isn’t suitable for them. Some young people may refuse to attend school due to overwhelming anxiety or what is known as “emotionally based school avoidance” .

A study that explored why parents in the UK chose to home educate found the most common reasons were that parents were disappointed with the education and schools (31%); they had always planned and had the intention to home educate (30%); their child was being bullied (25%) or the child was sick, exhausted or depressed (24%).

Social media – whether through homeschooling families’ Instagram accounts or sites such as the Not Fine in School Facebook page, where parents discuss the challenges their children face in mainstream education – has played a powerful role in expanding knowledge of home education. More parents may be making this choice because they know it is an option available to them.

The challenge is to ensure adequate support is in place for the children who may want to remain in school but feel they cannot, as well as for those whose families wish to take this route.

September 2, 2024 / 5:06 AM EDT / CBS News

Labor Day may be a national holiday, but it's also a big day for family get-togethers and backyard grilling with friends, often requiring a quick dash to pick up extra hamburger buns or drinks.

The good news is that plenty of retailers will be keeping their doors open on September 2. Others will remain closed on Labor Day — a national holiday in the U.S. since 1894 — while some stores might have shorter hours. Here's what to know about what's open and closed on Labor Day 2024.

Is Costco open on Labor Day?

Costco closes its doors for seven U.S. holidays each year, and Labor Day is among them. That means that you're out of luck Monday if you hope to make a quick run to the discount chain.

Is Walmart open on Labor Day?

Walmart told CBS MoneyWatch that its locations will be open during their regular hours on Labor Day. Walmart locations are typically open from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Which grocery stores are open on Labor Day?

Many grocery stores will be open on Labor Day, although some ask that customers check with their local stores to make sure they will be operating with normal hours. Here are some grocery chains that will be operating on September 2:

  • Albertsons: Albertsons Companies stores will be open on Labor Day, including Safeway, Albertsons, ACME, Shaw's, Vons and Tom Thumb. However, the company's pharmacies may be closed or have adjusted hours.
  • Food Lion: The chain's 1,100 locations will be operating during their normal hours, although these vary by location. Most Food Lion locations are open from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.
  • Publix: Its more than 1,400 locations will be open during their regular hours, but its pharmacies will be closed. Most Publix stores are open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Which pharmacies are open on Labor Day?

Some pharmacies will be closed on Labor Day, so it's best to check ahead for exact hours and operations.

  • CVS Pharmacy locations will be open on Labor Day, although some stores may have reduced hours. The company recommends that customers call their local store before visiting or check hours at CVS.com .
  • Publix pharmacies will be closed on September 2.
  • Rite Aid said most of its stores will be open for Labor Day, though with varying hours of operation. Customers should check ahead for hours.

Is Dunkin' open on Labor Day?

Dunkin' told CBS MoneyWatch that many of its locations will be open on Monday, September 2.

"As always, store hours can vary so we encourage guests to check their go-to location's hours in the Dunkin' app or by calling ahead before showing up," a spokesperson said.

Is Starbucks open on Labor Day?

Starbucks said its store hours will vary by location, and stores may occasionally adjust their hours based on business and customer needs.

How we choose the best Labor Day deals

At CNET, we have a team of expert shoppers and deal-hunters whose experience spans years of helping buyers understand which major sales and deals are legitimately good and which are more routine. That includes  Black Friday ,  Prime Day ,  Fourth of July  and countless other shopping events. We've gotten very good at weeding out scams and superficial deals. When choosing a deal to show you, we look for real discounts, quality reviews and remaining sale time.

  • Real discounts mean exactly that. We look at the price history for all items sold to make sure no manufacturers are inflating prices to make the discount seem more substantial than it is.
  • Quality reviews are important for any product, but especially for big purchase items like grills, furniture and appliances. If it breaks the first time you use it, the discount isn't really worthwhile.
  • Remaining sale time is a huge part of our vetting process. If a deal seems like it will only be around for a short while or will only be available for the remaining stock, we'll let you know upfront so you don't come back to the deal later only to be disappointed.

Students are often asked to write an essay on How I Spent My Holiday in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on How I Spent My Holiday

My holiday fun.

I spent my holiday with family and friends. We went to a nearby beach. The sun was warm, and the water looked like shiny blue glass. I built sandcastles and collected pretty shells. My sister and I laughed a lot.

Visiting the Zoo

One day, we visited the zoo. I saw lions, elephants, and monkeys. The monkeys were funny; they played and swung from trees. I learned that elephants love to splash in water.

Enjoying Ice Cream

Every evening, we ate ice cream. My favorite flavor is chocolate. It was the best part of the day.

Reading Time

At night, I read storybooks. Stories of adventure and magic filled my dreams. It was a peaceful way to end my days.

250 Words Essay on How I Spent My Holiday

Visiting my grandparents.

The first part of my holiday was spent at my grandparents’ house. They live in a small village surrounded by beautiful fields. Every morning, I would go for a walk with my grandfather and he would tell me stories from when he was young. My grandmother baked delicious cookies and I helped her decorate them.

Playing and Learning

Back at home, I played a lot with my friends. We rode bikes, played soccer in the park, and had a picnic on a sunny day. I also read a couple of interesting books. They were adventure stories that took me to far-off lands without leaving my room.

Trying New Things

I tried to learn something new during my holiday. I started learning how to play the guitar. My fingers hurt at first, but by the end of the holiday, I could play a whole song. It felt great to learn something by practicing a little every day.

Helping Around the House

I also helped my parents with chores. I learned to make a few simple dishes and helped with cleaning. It made me feel responsible and grown-up.

In conclusion, my holiday was a mix of fun, learning, and spending time with my loved ones. I enjoyed every moment and was ready to start school again with fresh energy and new stories to tell.

500 Words Essay on How I Spent My Holiday

Introduction to my holiday.

The first thing I did was visit my grandparents who live in a small village. They have a big house with a garden full of fruits and flowers. Every morning, I would help my grandma water the plants. She taught me the names of different flowers. My grandpa and I would go for walks in the evening, and he would tell me stories from his childhood. I loved listening to his adventures.

Learning to Cook

During my stay, my grandma also taught me how to cook simple dishes. We made pancakes, cookies, and even a small cake. I enjoyed mixing the ingredients and decorating the cake with icing and colorful sprinkles. It was a messy but fun activity, and the best part was eating what we had made.

Reading Books

Playing with friends.

I also met some kids in the village and made new friends. We played many games like hide and seek, tag, and soccer. Playing outside in the fresh air was exciting, and we would play until the sun set. I felt happy and free running around with my new friends.

Learning a New Hobby

My uncle, who lives near my grandparents, is good at painting. I asked him to teach me, and he was happy to. He showed me how to hold a paintbrush and mix colors. I painted a picture of the sunset one evening. It wasn’t perfect, but I was proud of it. Painting became a new hobby for me to enjoy.

Helping Around

Conclusion: a memorable holiday.

My holiday was filled with new experiences and joy. I learned, played, and spent quality time with my family. It was a break from my regular school routine, and I felt refreshed and ready to go back to school with lots of stories to tell my friends. This holiday will always be a special memory for me.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Essay on Holiday for Students

‘Holiday’ is such a fascinating word that catches the fancy of each one, be it she or he, everybody finds it bliss to go for a holiday. We may be from any walk of life but we quite relate to this term ‘holiday’ equally. Professional people love holidays and children pray for the same. When it comes to holidays every grown-up and the working person acts like a child, desperate to relish the days of holidays. With the odds, if the holiday is cancelled, they will be sad and grumble as a child.

Holidays are rightly known as pressure busters for the people. The normal routine of life requires a few days to relax. The holidays are always welcomed and awaited by all. Holidays give us immense peace and we cherish the memories of these well-spent days for the rest of our lives. Holidays help us in the following ways:

Mental Peace:

We can derive mental harmony and mental calmness by staying at home and also by spending the holiday time with friends and family.

Social Activities:

The students in their holidays can also include the social activities that they do with their loved ones.

Family Trip:

We enjoy a family trip or a family excursion during these holidays.

It is to be understood that gaining money is significant for livelihood, but relaxing the mind to make it function better is also as important. Hence, for the smooth working of life, a break is certainly required.

Essay 1: Essay about Holiday with My Family

This time, in the winters, our small family planned for a holiday in the hills of Darjeeling. This was a much-needed break for the members of this family to remain quite busy in their daily scheduled life. They remain occupied in the strictly disciplined life of either work or study. My little sister and I study in grades 8 and 4, respectively, my father is a deputy manager in his reputed company, and my mother is a working lady and also a housewife. So, you can guess how our life will be in the strict realms of schedule. Thus, this time, my father and I decided on a short trip to the hills.

We started our journey on the 1st of December, 2019. On the way, we played a variety of games. The view over the hills was quite pleasant to watch. When we were on the top of the summits, we looked down at our town, which seemed like a toy town; how small that was from the top!

We clicked pretty snaps of the places, clicked pictures of us, of the local residents there, after which we went to a famous restaurant to eat our afternoon meal. We had the most delightful dumplings and noodles, which were cooked and served to us when still on steam.

As dusk dawned on us, the jungles over the hills seemed to tell us another story of spirits and supernaturals. My sister and I were quite fantasized about this view. We preferred to keep our eyes shut till we reached our destination. It was half-past 8 when we reached the hotel where we would spend the night. The hotel staff was kind people who welcomed us with great warmth. We freshened up and went downstairs to watch their cultural program. The tribes danced to the music of one of their traditional songs, which was quite amazing for us to watch. After this, dinner was served. The dinner was quite rich and they served us in a sophisticated manner. After the tiring day, we decided to call it off and went to sleep.

The next day, we went hiking in the mountains. When we reached the peak of the mountains, it was a very delightful view. We decided to camp for the rest of the day there in the hills. The scenario and being on the lap of nature were quite peaceful and serene.

After the trip, we came down to our town and normalized our lives.

This trip had ushered a sense of great peace and calmness in my mind, which was to be instilled. The memories of the trip were to remain fresh in my mind like the fresh droplets on the leaves.

Essay 2: Essay on Holiday

Holidays have joyous feelings related to them. My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love this holiday because it comes in December, which is also my birth month. There are a lot of exciting things we do during Christmas. We start making preparations for Christmas early before the month starts.

This year, my friends and I made snowmen with snow outside our houses. My dad put up all the lights in the interior and exterior of the house. It was looking really bright and pretty. My mom made a lot of food, cakes, and snacks, and ate with our family. My cousins from the US came over to spend time with us.

Our whole group of family and friends ate and talked and laughed with each other, sitting cozily near the fireplace, with the Christmas tree towering over us. I had a lot of fun. It is one of my best experiences and I hope to feel it again.

Essay about school holidays

User Avatar

During the last school holidays, my family and I went for a trip to Kuala Lumpur . It spent 2 days 1 night.

We left at 7o’clock after packing up our belongings. While going to our destination, I took out my favorite book which I bring along the way to read.

After 4 hours, we reached our destination, Kuala Lumpur safely. Even though the weather was extremely hot and humid, my beloved family and I felt cozy as the car was fully air-conditioned. Then, we checked in at the hotel and put our luggage in the room. The room was big and beautiful.

Later, we visited National Zoo. There were many people in the zoo. When we were entering the zoo, we saw a few lions and tigers were in big cages. Next, we saw monkeys and birds. The monkeys were swinging from tree to tree happily and the birds were flying freely. I did not miss the opportunity to take some snapshots as remembrance.

Later, we went to a seafood restaurant near the zoo to have lunch. Then, we went to Petronas Twin Tower. The tower was magnificent. In fact, the scenery was breathtaking and amazing. We enjoyed the scenery very much.

After that, we went back to the hotel tiredly.

On the next day, the weather was fine. After having breakfast, my family and I went to KLCC. We bought a lot of souvenirs. Then, we went to Cineplex to watch a comedy movie. My sister and I were deliriously happy as it was our first experience to watch movie at the Cineplex.

Then, we went to the aquarium. There were many types of fish and aquatic animals, like butterfly fish, manta, balloon fish, acaleph, mussel, starfish and more.

At 5o’clock, we went to the hotel to take a rest and checked out from the hotel. Then, we went back to Baling reluctantly.

It was a memorable holidays for my entire family. I hope we could go there in the immediate future.

Essay on Holidays: Holidays are the most important part of not only children’s lives but also adult’s lives. As adults, we work from Monday to Friday with our monotonous 9 to 5 schedule in a hope that we shall be able to party in the weekend holidays. If we actually think about it, there is not much difference between robots and corporate employees. We spend half of our lives in the hope that we will enjoy the holidays. We spend 80 percent of our lives struggling so that we can relax in the remaining measly 20 percent? Sounds sad. In this particular essay on holidays, we shall be talking about the importance of holidays in our lives and how to change our lives so that we don’t depend on holidays to come in order to be happy in life.

If you are searching for well-written Essay on Holidays then we have provided a 600-word long essay on holidays with good content. We have also provided a short 200-word Essay on Holidays in English. Both these essays can be used by students of class 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10

Long Essay on Holidays 600 Words in English

Holidays Essay is usually given to classes 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Holidays are a part and parcel of life. Whether it’s a student, a small kid or a full-grown mature adult, everyone loves holidays. It is during holidays that we will get enough time to spend with our families and loved ones. It is during holidays that we can work on the things that we love and always dream of. We can work on our hobbies and dreams during holidays because during work or school time, we shall be completely preoccupied with the work that we might actually not like, but do it to earn our living.

Lucky are those whose holidays and work are not much different. Instead of waiting for 5 days a week so that we enjoy the 2 days in the weekend or wait for 3 months to wait for Diwali holidays or Christmas holidays, we have to build such a life where we need no vacation from. Perfect lives are those whose work and professional life itself feels like a vacation.

Students lives are more or less similar. Children are most excited to come out of school than go in. As children, we remember getting excited for the Christmas holidays or a 2 months summer holidays. This speaks volumes about our education system. If students are not interested to study in a school environment, it is high time education experts change the way teaching is imparted. Our entire education system needs immediate revamp so that children love to study and not forced to study. The education system should be designed in such a way that students don’t miss out on a single class. But it is easier said than done. Education systems in Finland and South Korea have nearly achieved that feat. It requires visionary leadership and policies in India to make that dream come true.

But not every time that the holidays are all hunky-dory. Each and every one of us have experienced this during the coronavirus holidays when India was under a complete Lockdown for more than 2 months due to the spread of COVID 19 pandemic. Most of us,  irrespective of what age and occupation we had, were sick of holidays and sitting at home. While holidays that come our way once in while gives us time to reflect upon ourselves and take a break from the monotony of life,  if the holidays are indefinite,  then it will start taking a toll on our mental health as well as our physical health. As the saying goes, an idle mind is a devil’s workshop, if people are locked up in a house for a long time, our cognitive abilities will start shrinking and our children are especially vulnerable to these negative effects.

I would like to conclude by saying that holidays are important for us to relax and spend some quality time with our selves and with our families and loved ones. But building a life where we are not prisoners to holidays is also important. Build a life where every day of your life feels like a vacation. That kind of life is a truly happy and content life. And at the same time, indefinite holidays will have an opposite impact which means instead of feeling relaxed, our anxiety and restlessness will increase.

Short Essay on Holidays 200 Words in English

Holidays Essay is usually given to classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Holidays are the time that each and every one of us wait eagerly so that we can go on a trip to our dream destination or spend some quality time with our families and loved ones or just spend some time alone in solitude to introspect of life. Irrespective of what the reason is, holidays are undoubtedly the best thing about our lives.

India is a secular country with many religions celebrating their festivities, has plenty of holidays in a year. Governments declare there own holidays other than the corporate holidays that companies and education institutes declare. Some of the major religious holidays in India are Deepawali holidays, Christmas holidays,  Pongal holidays and Ganesha Chaturthi holidays. Other than religious festivals,  India celebrates holidays to commemorate the birth and death anniversaries of its leaders such as Gandhi Jayanti,  Children’s Day celebrated on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday and many more.

Without holidays, the efficiency and the interest to work and to learn will be reduced. In countries like Japan, to improve the work efficiency, companies ask employees to work only four days a week,  unlike India where working in offices and studying in schools has 6 days working routine.  Holidays are just get away from the daily work routine and holidays, it becomes forced and indefinite like the coronavirus holidays can have negative impacts on people and society at large.

A student’s life revolves around homework, exam preparation and tests. So basically studies, studies and more studies. We go to school then go to the coaching centre and then study at home. There is hardly any time for other activities especially in the higher classes. Sundays come as a respite but mostly there is some or the other test scheduled for Monday so we cannot escape studies even for a single day in a week.

My Fond Memories of My Summer Holidays

Summer holidays are the best time of the year for every student. We plan a family trip during our summer vacations every year. Our family trip is the best part of these holidays and I always look forward to it. Most of the times the four of us that is my father, mother, brother and I go on these trips but many times my cousins also join us. These trips are always full of fun. Last year, we went to Ooty and Mysore for six days. Both the places were spectacular.

Ooty was particularly awesome. These places encompass many beautiful gardens and marvellous edifices. We went for sight-seeing, had scrumptious food and spent quality time with each other. It was a great experience. It was one of the best family trips we had every gone for. It was also the longest one. We often plan holidays only for 2-3 days but this one was for 6 days and was thus more fun. I cherish the days spent there. These are my fondest memories of my summer holidays.

Holidays are a good time to take a break from the routine. It is the time to indulge in our hobbies, meet our old friends and extended family members. However, we must not let our studies take a back seat during this time. We must devote some time to studies even during our holidays.

Holiday Essay 3 (400 words)

Holidays are a time to be with the family and friends. It is also the time to indulge in our favourite sport or pursue our hobbies. We make numerous plans for our holidays but most of them are not fulfilled. One of the main reasons for this is procrastination. We want to do a lot during our holidays but usually get lazy and vile away the time only to regret at the end of the holidays.

Ways to Make the Most of Your Holidays?

Here are a few ways to make the most of your holidays to get back to work with fresh mind.

  • Don’t Leave Your Work

Holiday is not a time to take a break from your studies or work in fact it is the time to improvise on these things. If you leave your work or study during your holidays (especially during long vacations) you will find it very difficult to get back with it as you resume your office/ school. This will create dissatisfaction and you will yearn for another holiday to set things right. So why not keep things managed during your break and get back to work with confidence and enthusiasm.

Now, don’t over indulge in your work. Just squeeze in an hour or two each day for the same so that you stay in touch.

  • Follow Your Hobby/ Interest

It is a good idea to join a hobby class. Indulge in anything of your choice such as dancing, swimming, yoga, painting, sketching or music. Take-up a short course for a week or 10 days depending on the number of holidays you have.

  • Meet Friends and Relatives

Socializing is very important. We don’t get enough time to visit our friends and relatives due to our hectic routine. But we can certainly do so during our holidays. So take out time to meet them.

  • Go on a Trip

Go for a trip with your family or friends to take a break from your routine life. Trips are refreshing. I always make it a point to go for one trip each during my summer and winter holidays.

  • Spend Time with Your Family

Most importantly, spend time with your family. Family always comes first! So, you must spend quality time with each of your family members. Spend time with your grandparents, parents and siblings to strengthen your bond.

Holidays are a great time to bond with family and friends. It is also a time to follow your interests and rejuvenate yourself. So, make the most of this time.

Holiday Essay 4 (500 words)

Holidays hold immense importance in a person’s life. Be it a student, a working professional or a businessman – everyone wants a break from their work. Holidays provide this much awaited break. They are also important for many other reasons.

Importance of Holidays for Students

Holidays are a time when we can finally take a break from our otherwise hectic routine and follow our hobbies and interests. I always make it a point to join a hobby course during holidays. I love art and craft and thus join different art and craft classes to hone my skills in the same. Last year, I joined glass painting classes, prior to that I joined pottery classes and this year I am planning to learn the art of candle making. My friends also join different classes as per their interest. Some of them join dance classes, others join vocal/ instrumental music while yet others join sports such as skating, swimming and basket ball.

Holidays are also a time when we can socialize with friends and relatives and spend time with our family. I love family outings. We plan at least one family trip during summer vacations. I am also allowed to go over to my friends place to spend the day every once in a while. I also love the time when my cousins come over to stay at my place. Those days are particularly the best part of the summer vacations.

Most importantly, holidays are a time when we can relax and understand how to improve our skills to perform better in our exams as well as other activities. I make sure that I set aside at least 2-3 hours a day to study during the vacations. This helps me keep pace with my studies as I join back.

Importance of Holidays for Working People

Working professionals and businessmen also yearn for holidays. But they do not get long vacations like the school and college going kids. However, whatever little break they get they must make the most of it by indulging in the activity of their choice.

Working professionals mostly have long working hours these days. Many people even require working after they get back home from their work place. This hectic professional life often takes a toll on their personal life. They are hardly able to spend any time with their family members and this result in conflicts and strained relationships. Holidays give them an opportunity to spend time with their family to strengthen the bond. It is a good idea to plan a family vacation. Socializing is also very important and this can also be done during holidays as the hectic work routine does not allow any room for it during the regular days. It is a good time to meet one’s friends and relatives. Holidays are also a time to relax and focus on one’s physical as well as mental health.

Holidays are important as they help in maintaining a balance between our personal and professional life. We must spend them wisely to make the most of them.

Holiday Essay 5 (600 words)

Holidays are the best time of the year. I always look forward to my summer holidays as these are the longest holidays we students get during the year. I mostly spend them with my family and extended family. My parents also allow me to go on a few outings with friends as a reward if I study and behave well during the holidays.

My First Holiday with School Friends

Until 5 th grade my parents did not allow me to go for school trips but as I entered my 6 th grade I got this chance. My school had organized a three day trip to Shimla during the summer vacations. Many of my friends filled the consent to go for the trip. I wanted to go to but feared that my parents would not agree. At first, I thought there was no point even asking because their answer would only be no but my friends insisted I should.

I still remember how I hesitantly handed over the consent form for the trip to my father and began telling him about the details of the trip. I also told him that many of my classmates are going for it and that I also wanted to go. Initially, he refused as he felt I was too young to go out without their supervision. It took me around 2 days to convince my mother to allow me to go for the trip and she in turn convinced my father for the same. I was finally glad and super excited about the trip. I promised them that I will not talk to strangers, always move with the group and be careful with everything during the trip.

We travelled from Delhi to Kalka in train and then took a bus to reach Shimla. We reached our hotel in the afternoon. The first day we went to the mall road. The weather was pleasant and the place was amazing. I had been to various hill stations earlier as well but this place had something very refreshing about it. The company of friends made it all the more amazing. We roam around on the mall road and had planned to have dinner in a restaurant on our way back to the hotel but could not resist the smell of freshly steamed momos. They were super delicious and we ate so many of them that there was no room for dinner.

The next day we went to the Jakhu temple. The road to the temple was quite steep and we encountered hundreds of langoors on our way. It was a bit scary but exciting at the same time. The temple is set at a very serene place and we loved sitting in peace for some time. On our way back we decided to trek down the road and the experience was amazing. In the evening we visited the church and spent time on the mall road again. On the third day of our trip our teachers allowed us to go for shopping. We went to the Tibetan market to buy some really cool stuff. I bought scarves, hair clips and a jacket for myself. I also bought souvenirs for my siblings and friends.

The time finally came when we had to bid goodbye to the beautiful mountains and valley view of Shimla. We took the night bus straight for Delhi and reached home safely.

I had been on many family trips before this and loved them but the joy and excitement of going on trips with friends is something different. Since then I have been on many trips with my friends but I can never forget the wonderful moments spent on my first trip with them.

My school holiday

Favorite Quote: Infinty Rose

Last school holiday, my family and I went back to our hometown, the eagerly-awaited holidays bring a respite from homework, lessons, extracurricular activities and exams. For me, spending a holiday at home is equally unbearable.                   On the last day of school, I eagerly waited for the bell to ring at 1:30 p.m..Then, I felt like a caged bird hat has just been set free. I slang my bag over my shoulder and make my way to my dorm to pick up some bags to bring home. I waited for my mother for a couple of minutes. Finally, she came. I put my bags in the car and hoped in. In the car, my mother told me that the whole family is going to our hometown. I felt very excited because I missed my hometown very much. When we got home, I quickly packed my clothes so that I won't be rushing the next day.

We started our journey early in the morning. When we arrived, we had a quick lunch. I make a short exchange and headed for my favourite spot at my hometown. A secluded corner of my grandfather durian orchards. There under a shady spot, I sat down and enjoyed the peaceful surrounding.

Here is one of the places that made me feel relaxed, I enjoyed the solitude of nature. As I took my seat on a wooden bench, and took a glance around, I can see a flurry of activities. Birds flew and sang sweetly above me while two squirrel ran from a tree to another, colourful butterflies flapped their colourful wings and ants scurry in a single file carrying bits of food on their backs.

A cool breeze blowed. I can hear the soft rustle of leaves. The air is heavy with the scent of grasses coupled with the scent of ripe durians. I can't wait to eat durians if there's some at home. I hope so.

I lied on my back with my hand behind my head and watched streaks of sunlight filtering through the canopy of leaves. Soon I fall into short but deep slumber. When I woke up, I can see the sun slowly descending behind a row of far hills. Although I would love to linger for a little longer, I moved away reluctantly and leaved knowing that my grandparents and family would be waiting for me.

  • Essay 5 : What I did last school holiday

Last school holiday, my family and I went back to our hometown, the eagerly-awaited holidays bring a respite from homework, lessons, extracurricular activities and exams. you're superb and the vocab I would prefer to be very precise and the idea is well-developed, the two things that are lacking are the normal writing skill and some grammatical errors. essay about school holiday at home

‘I Can’t Believe I Am Going to Say This, but I Would Rather Be at School’

We asked students, from kindergarten to 12th grade, what it’s like to learn from home. Here’s what they had to say, in their own words — and drawings.

Kids are getting more bored by the day. We wish we could go back to school to see our friends. But some of us are also really scared about getting the coronavirus, and we don’t want our friends and family to get it either.

That’s what kids across the country told The New York Times (where my dad works) when they were asked about learning from home during the coronavirus outbreak .

Some are having fun with their parents and their brothers and sisters, but most are missing their teachers, their friends and their normal lives. (As Dahlia Stringer, who is 11 like me, said in her letter, “Everyone knows little sisters are annoying” — little brothers sometimes are, too.) And a lot are frustrated about missing out on things like spring break, field trips and graduation.

“I’m hoping that things will be back to normal someday,” wrote Sasha Udovich, 9, from Los Angeles.

Same. Home-school is definitely boring, but I really hope we can make it through this safely and return to how things used to be. I miss my friends.

Here are some of the feelings about learning from home that kids across the country shared in letters and emails. They were gathered together and lightly edited by Adeel Hassan, who works with my dad.

Practise english in the school holidays.

If your child wants to improve their English, they need to practise, practise, practise. Learning ‘little and often’ is more effective than occasionally studying hard.

Cambridge English resources

The Cambridge English website has lots of free resources to help your child practise their language skills at home. For example, your child can improve their:

  • listening skills with our Virtually Anywhere audio series and activities
  • speaking skills with our Sing and Learn videos and activities
  • reading skills by playing our online games
  • writing skills by using Cambridge English Write & Improve .

Encourage your child to do one of our 5–10-minute learning activities every day. We have lots of free, online activities for younger children and teenagers .

Holiday adventures

The holidays are a chance for children to practise the things they learned in school, explore them in more depth and use them in real-life situations.

Learning tip s Speaking and listening activities:

  • Ask your child what they enjoyed doing in school. What would they like to learn more about? It could be dinosaurs, castles, space travel, endangered animals, the water cycle.
  • Listen to English-language audiobooks or television shows related to your theme.

Writing activities:

  • Why do you want to visit?
  • When is it open?
  • How much does it cost?
  • Learning tip for 5–12 year olds : Encourage your child and their friends to send postcards to each other. It’s important to have real reasons to communicate in English. Ask your child’s school to join Cambridge English Penfriends . Your child can share postcards with other English learners around the world.
  • Learning tip for 13–18 year olds : Encourage your child to type their postcard message into Cambridge English Write & Improve . They will receive instant, free feedback, which they can use to improve their writing.
  • make a scrapbook. Ask them to glue in ‘souvenirs’. For example, their ticket, a photograph, a flower, a shell from the beach. Ask them to write a caption for each item.
  • write a blog or film themselves talking about their holiday (vlog).

Reading activities:

  • Encourage your child to read storybooks or fun facts related to the topics they’re interested in and the things they’ve enjoyed doing.
  • If you have bad weather, no transport or you don’t have many places to visit, have an ‘imagination holiday’ at home. Encourage your child to find out about holiday traditions in other countries, such as Anzac Day (Australia), Carnival (Brazil), Holi, the festival of colours (India), Lantern Festival (China), Mardi Gras (France/USA).
  • Ask your child to research a food/drink recipe from a different country, such as having a traditional English garden party with ‘afternoon tea’.

Holiday projects

The school holidays are a perfect time to do longer projects, which your child would not have time for usually.

Projects can be really motivating. They give children the opportunity to be creative and use English to complete real-life tasks. Projects are also a fantastic way to use a range of different language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

Learning tips Here are a few project ideas you could try at home:

  • Your child might also enjoy making a stop-motion cartoon . You will need objects that can be easily moved, such as Lego figures or Play-Doh characters. Take a photo of the character, move the character just a little bit and take another photo. When the photos are shown quickly in order, the character will appear to move on its own. Then add some voices and sound effects.
  • You could ask your child to design their ‘dream bedroom’. Ask them to label colours and furniture. Older children may enjoy doing some research online and presenting their design ideas with written descriptions in English.
  • act out the highlights
  • make a scrapbook with labels
  • pretend to be a journalist and write a newspaper article
  • write a short story about what the characters might do next.

Making kids write an essay on  the topic ‘holiday’ for classes 1, 2 and 3 has its benefits as it will allow kids to relive their happy memories related to their holidays. Holidays are the time for them to do everything they usually can’t do during the rest of the year. Their holiday list is endless. From trips to learning new hobbies and visiting grandparents to playing sports, kids have so much to share. It will be a good writing exercise for kids as they write an essay on their holiday fun.

All kids love to talk about how they spent or will be spending their holidays. However, they may struggle with how to write an essay on their holiday. Here are some key points to make it easier to write an essay on holiday:

  • Give a brief introduction about holidays.
  • State the importance of holidays.
  • Write what all things or activities the kid will or can do in the holidays.
  • Write about all the fun they’ve had during the holidays.
  • Conclude briefly by expressing joy for the holidays.

Writing an essay for classes 1 and 2 on the holidays may sometimes be a bit of a struggle. Here are 10 lines to help kids write:

  • Holidays are the happiest time for everybody, especially students.
  • Students get a break from their regular school hours.
  • Holidays are a time when they can pursue hobbies, learn new sports and relax.
  • They also spend more hours playing with their friends.
  • We visit our grandparent’s or relatives’ homes during holidays.
  • We have a lot of fun at our grandparent’s or relatives’ home, since we eat delicious food and have our cousins over.
  • Some families go for trips to hill stations or beaches.
  • Students also complete their school assignments during holidays.
  • Some students go for extra classes to do better in academics.
  • Holidays are the time to enjoy, relax, learn good things, and cherish good times with close family members.

Holidays are the most joyous time for every student. Let’s relive the joy through this short paragraph:

Everyone loves holidays, whether they are for one day or one month! Students especially look forward to their annual school vacation. They love that they don’t need to get up early for school and can get extra sleep hours. It’s a healthy break from a routine. Kids plan so many things for their holidays; some want to spend it with their cousins in their grandparent’s or relatives’ house. Some plan for a family holiday where they visit and explore new places. It is also a good time to learn new things or pursue new hobbies. Holidays are magical days full of fun and enjoyment.

Kids love to talk about their holidays. Therefore, writing a holiday essay for classes 1, 2 and 3 kids is a joy. Here is a short essay on holidays for children:

Routine life is boring, especially for kids. Holiday is the magic word that gives them a break from their school routine. Whether it’s a short break or the annual holidays, every student eagerly waits for them. Holidays are the time when they can sleep late, wake up late and spend hours playing. Parents won’t rush them to complete homework. Nor would their parents stop them from playing extra hours. Some kids even invite their friends for sleepovers or movie nights. Most kids don’t get enough time to learn new sports or hobbies during school days. So, the holidays are the perfect time to learn how to play the guitar or go swimming or even join that reading club. Most families plan a get-together during long holidays. It is the time to visit new places and enjoy yourself with family. Holidays give us a break from everyday life to relax and rejuvenate.

Here is a long holiday essay for class 3 students. Kids can read and learn from it to write a long essay on holidays for their school assignments.

One thing that never fails to make us smile is the word holiday. Whether we are young or old, we all look forward to holidays. They are the perfect time to relax and take a break from our daily routine. Our days of leisure, are the most important and memorable days of our lives. Let’s understand how important are holidays and ways to enjoy them the most.

Importance of Holiday For Students And Working People

Everyone loves holidays. However, they hold a different level of importance for different people. For students, holidays are the time when they can do extra things apart from their studies. In their daily school lives, students don’t get much time to pursue their hobbies or interests. During holidays, they can explore a new interest or get themselves enrolled to learn new sports. Trying new things is important for a kid’s overall development. Kids also get more time to spend with their families and friends. So, holidays give them the perfect opportunity to do things they cannot do during school days.

Working people equally love holidays as young kids. Their long working hours and hectic lifestyle don’t leave them much time to relax or enjoy their hobbies. So, during the holidays, they relax and rejuvenate. They sleep in late, wake up late and enjoy the whole day with the family. During holidays, they can go on trips with family or friends to rejuvenate.

How To Make The Most Of Your Holidays

To fully utilise the holidays, one should list what they want to do or don’t get to do on their normal days. It could be spending time with friends, learning a new hobby, or sleeping late. Then, as per the time and number of days, start ticking things off the list. A new hobby or sport can be learned if you have long holidays. For a short holiday of a few days, a family trip can be planned. Just remember your holidays are the time to enjoy, relax and have lots of fun.

An essay on ‘holiday’ is a great way to teach your child the importance of relaxing, unwinding and doing better in our lives. Through this essay, they will also learn about various things they can do during holidays. While writing an essay on holidays, kids will learn the value of playing sports and learning new hobbies to become active and smart.

Some noteworthy points about holidays:

1. Why Is A Holiday Important?

Holidays are important as they give us time to relax and rejuvenate. During holidays we get more time with our near ones and can pursue our hobbies.

2. How One Can Spend His/Her Holiday?

One can spend their holidays in numerous ways. They can pursue their hobbies, learn new interests like singing, dancing, sports or arts, spend time with friends or go on a trip. The list is endless.

Holidays are best enjoyed when they are spent doing things we like or with people we love. They are the ideal time to learn or do extra activities, spend time with family and relax. Writing an essay on holidays will allow kids to explore their thoughts and desires related to this beautiful topic.

  • Orthodox Christmas  (Rozhdestvo Khristovo): 7th January (usually includes 6th to 8th January too).
  • Defender of the Fatherland Day  (Den zashchitnika Otechestva): 23rd February, dedicated to veterans and members of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
  • International Women's Day : 8th March.
  • International Workers' Day : 1st May.
  • Victory Day  (Den Pobedy): 9th May, celebrating the victory over Nazi Germany. Military parades are held in Palace Square and Senate Square .

  • Unity Day  (Den narodnogo edinstva): 4th November, commemorating the popular uprising against Polish invaders in 1612.

Other days which are not public holidays but may be celebrated while you're in St Petersburg include:

  • October Revolution Day : 7th November, reflecting the 13-day calendar difference from 25th October 1917, when it took place.
