In this study, we consider the owners of two Burger King franchise establishments that have been struggling financially over the past three years. The owners are looking to grow the revenue of their two struggling locations and remain competitive in the changing fast food landscape. They realize that their competitors are not only other fast food brands but also the growing number of fast casual chains, ethnic cuisine restaurants, and convenience store establishments. They notice that their target segment, Millennials, has become more health conscious and exhibit an increasing desire to diversify their palates. As a result, the franchisees struggle to meet Millennials’ expectations in terms of their menu items. In addition, they do not keep up with innovative technology, such as mobile apps for ordering and delivering fast food items, that has been gradually adopted by competitors. Thus, the owners of the two Burger King locations are faced with two key challenges: (a) how to stay competitive and (b) how to be more attractive to Millennials.

Studies of international franchising are scant but increasing and can be divided into two streams of research: those focusing on environmental predictors of internationalization and those focusing on strategic, firm-level characteristics. Examining the latter category, this study empirically explores a set of firm-level attributes as predictors of decision making on whether firms seek international expansion. Using longitudinal data from Bond's Franchise Guide 2001–2008, we draw on a sample of U.S.-based fast-food franchise systems to test our hypotheses. Specifically, our database is composed of 1,058 observations of 158 chains, and we estimate a semi-parametric logistic model for international franchising. The model contributes to the literature by being the first to examine the nonlinearity of international franchising determinants using agency theory. The results show that (a) bonding, (b) the percentage of franchised units, (c) the number of states within which the system operates, and (d) the provision of area development agreements and sub-franchising significantly contribute to the international expansion of U.S.-based fast-food franchisors.

Regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. I would also like to thank the clients from my professional career across the United States and Canada. They taught me how franchising works in the soft drink industry. Several clients were kind enough to loan books from their private collection. Client and friend Patti Gillette-Ostrom, formerly of the Gillette Group, was also very helpful, providing ideas for research and loaning books from her private collection. The Dublin Bottling Works and their manager and chief historian Kenny Horton were very generous to me. By opening their archives and museum to my research, I was able to uncover the remarkable history of Dr. Pepper in Dublin, Texas. I would also like to thank author Karen Wright, whose book and insights into the history of Dublin Dr. Pepper were very useful. And most importantly, I would like to thank my wife Ramona. She has been my editor throughout my studies in history and her candid frankness ensured that my writing had at least some semblance of coherence. Her red penned comments, while at times looked daunting, guided me through the process of this thesis and my degree. vi

The objective of this paper is to investigate the role of franchising in the process of internationalization of the fast food industry. The paper hypothesizes that franchising is an effective means of internationalization in the fast food industry that increases the revenues of the company. The hypothesis of the paper will be tested using the linear regression analysis. This analysis studies the relationship between revenues (dependent variable) and the number of outlets and the number of employees (independent variables). The sample includes 15 fast food chains from the list of 100 top franchises of 2017. The study of the annual reports of these 15 fast food chains revealed a correlation between the company's decision to go global through franchising and the growth of its revenues. It is necessary to build a literature on the role of franchising in the internationalization of business. The originality of this paper lies in the way it seeks to illuminate future academic research on the impact of franchising as an internationalization process on business revenues.
