Donna Street Community Center making a difference for North Las Vegas community

by Ambar Rodriguez

(News 3)

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Donna Street Community Center in North Las Vegas has only been open for three weeks, but the new resource is already helping meet a need for families in the area.

The community center, which includes a computer lab, library, kitchen, and variety of video and board games, opened at the beginning of the month to residents who live in Centennial Park apartments.

The founder and director of the community center, who is also a teacher in the community, Robert Strawder , said opening up the vital resource in the neighborhood he grew up in is a dream come true, but he said it is just the first step.

"The kids are loving this, last week I saw a little girl doing her homework, I thought that was cool because who knows maybe she wouldn't have been able to get it done if she was at home, everybody doesn't have a computer or laptop at home, or maybe their parents have it and they don't have access to it," said Teresa Porter, a volunteer at the Donna Street Community Center.

Currently, the new resource center is only open on Saturdays to both kids and adults.

"I think this center is amazing because they have this library station that I am in, oculus and stuff, they got lots of stuff and they are welcoming to children that live in this community, even if you just moved here, you are welcome to come here," said Zy'aer Glasper, a 12-year-old in the 6th grade who said he has been at the center every day since it opened.

Strawder said so far each day the center has been opened more than 25 kids took advantage of the new resource.

He said the goal is to expand the center's hours, create a consistent and reliable space for children in the community, where a majority are in a low-income home, and provide them with free meals, especially when school is on break.

Strawder said the organization is looking into funding that could help the nonprofit afford a food program.

He asks if anyone knows of a way the community center can make the free meal program a reality, to please contact the center at (702) 810-5808.

Father arrested after continuously calling school about child’s homework, police say

OXFORD, Ohio ( WXIX /Gray News) - A father’s growing frustrations about the amount of homework his child’s school was assigning led to him being arrested.

Adam Sizemore is accused of repeatedly calling his child’s school to complain about the amount of homework, according to police in Oxford, Ohio.

Criminal complaints filed against Sizemore claim he threatened the school principal, saying he “better put his big boy pants on.”

When the school stopped answering Sizemore’s call, detectives say he started calling their police department.

“He calls dispatch, I think it was 18 times, roughly,” said Oxford Police Detective Sgt. Adam Price.

In the audio records from the police department, Sizemore can be heard becoming frustrated that dispatchers are not telling him their names.

He was audibly frustrated that he kept getting the chief of police’s voicemail and that he can’t speak with him directly.

“He can come to my f****** house. I pay for him. He can come to my house,” Sizemore was heard saying in a transcript of one of the calls.

After repeated calls, Sizemore did not get the chance to speak with the chief, but he did get to speak with officers.

In other audio recordings, a dispatcher told Sizemore that they would send out officers after his repeated calls to the department.

“That ultimately ended when we took him into custody for telecommunications harassment as well as a menacing charge,” Price explained.

Sizemore was charged with two first-degree misdemeanors for telecommunications harassment, according to the criminal complaint. The menacing charge he faces is a fourth-degree misdemeanor, the complaint also shows.

Las Vegas company introduces AI real estate agent to help families find homes

homework help las vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Across the nation, artificial intelligence is redefining the way companies operate and a local real estate agency is hoping to be one of them.

But the question is how do you feel about using an AI real estate agent to buy your next home?

Channel 13 is introducing you to Luxora, the first AI conversational luxury real estate agent in the United States.

AI real estate agent - Luxora

Luxora was created by the Luxury Realty Group in Las Vegas. Broker and owner Bruce Hiatt said he partnered with tech platforms to make this possible.

"I thought wow! This may finally offer [a] change [to] what I think is this archaic, very traditional business," Hiatt told me.

This isn't just another run-of-the-mill website. This conversational AI system is rewriting the rules of property hunting here in Las Vegas. Potential buyers don't even have to leave their home or apartment to view properties.

"We've created a very unique database that is proprietary where you will be able to search for elements in a luxury home," Hiatt explained.

So how does it work?

The process of searching for your dream home is as easy as having a conversation. Instead of sifting through endless listings, you simply tell Luxora what you're looking for.

Luxora finds available homes and provides an immersive property tour as well as specific property details.

"A user who is spending several millions on a home is going to spend hours trying to search to find these elements," Hiatt said. "They look through photos. They spend hours doing it. We do it in seconds."

Can an AI replace the personal touch of a human realtor?

Las Vegas resident Chloe Rodriguez tells me she doesn't think AI can do the job.

"I would want an actual person, to be honest," she said. "It's more personable to talk to a person, better communication and response time."

What about a realtor's job security?

"That is a great question," Hiatt said. "The avatar is not a licensed agent. It's an advisor. You need an agent to work with them."

Hiatt adds this technology is meant to enhance the experience for both buyers and sellers. He says it's about marrying cutting-edge technology with that human connection that's so vital in the world of real estate.

While some locals say it's concerning, Hiatt said it makes selling and buying real estate more efficient and accessible for everyone.

"When that buyer walks into the home, our goal is to let them know everything they need to know about that home. There is very few questions they have to ask when they go in."

Hiatt said this technology is first used by the buyer to get all their questions answered about the home before they meet with a realtor in person to see the home. He adds he believes other real estate agencies will also use this technology soon.

A guide to Bruce Springsteen’s long-awaited return to Vegas

The Boss has done seven tours since his last stop in Las Vegas, playing everywhere from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Oslo, Norway. But the wait is over.

Jason Bracelin

T he wait is over, 4,230 days later.

Bruce Springsteen last played Las Vegas on Aug. 18, 2002, at the Thomas & Mack Center.

He’s done seven tours since, performing hundreds of shows, playing everywhere from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Oslo, Norway.

And yet every time, Vegas was left off the list.

Only The Boss knows, but maybe he’ll share a little insight when he finally takes the stage locally once again at T-Mobile Arena on Friday.

Because it’s been so long since Springsteen hit town, we put together a handy concert guide to help prepare you for his return.

Wear comfy shoes

“Life is a marathon, not a race,” a wise man once said.

Actually, it was Dr. Phil who coined the phrase, but let’s not split (brick-thick facial) hairs.

Point is, Bruce Springsteen gigs have long been known for being, well, long — and this is a good thing. It’s like the rock ’n’ roll equivalent of the all-you-can-eat breadsticks at Olive Garden, sans the carbs and shame.

Now, The Boss isn’t turning in the kind of record-setting, four-hour-long shows he did back in 2016 during select dates of his “50 Gallon Drums of Redbull and Fistfuls of Trucker Speed Tour.” (OK, it was actually “The River Tour.” Again with the nitpicking!)

But he still performed for a solid three hours and played over two dozen songs a night on average during last year’s “Springsteen and E Street Band 2023 Tour,” the next leg of which launched Tuesday in Phoenix.

Be prepared to pace yourself as the show comes to Vegas — when Springsteen plays “Prove It All Night,” he’s speaking literally.

Maybe bring a hanky as well

Three tunes in, he finds himself in fate’s crosshairs.

“Time is my hunter,” Springsteen sings over stirring, cresting guitars on “Burnin’ Train,” from his most recent studio album, 2020’s “Letter to You.”

“Take me and shake me from this mortal cage,” he adds a few refrains later as if watching the sand in an hourglass pile up — and reckoning with it in song.

It’s a theme that pervades the record, which looks back on a life closer to its end than its beginning.

“One minute you’re here,” Springsteen sings on the album-opening song of the same name. “Next minute you’re gone,” setting the tone for a reflective yet rousing record, in which emotions and guitars ring out loudly in unison.

This same spirit of remembrance informed Springsteen’s most recent tour, which had its tear-jerking moments.

During “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” for instance, images of late band members Daniel Federici and Clarence Clemons, who died in 2008 and 2011, respectively, were displayed on video screens.

The show then ended with Springsteen alone onstage, performing an acoustic version of “Letter” closer “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

“Death is not the end,” Springsteen sings on the tune.

Speaking of which …

Get ready to ‘Twist and Shout’ (maybe)

It’s like a vampire’s bite, a great song.

It can grant a measure of immortality to those who made it, a gift of timelessness even after their time on Earth has expired.

That’s what the Commodores’ 1985 hit “Nightshift” is all about: a stirring tribute to soul titans Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, both of whom died the year before, a reminder that even though they’re gone, their voices will never follow suit.

Springsteen delivers a poignant, impassioned reading of the song on his 2022 covers album, “Only the Strong Survive,” continuing a theme of reflection that began on “Letters.”

The song was a set list staple during Springsteen’s touring last year, played almost nightly, along with the band’s well-traveled take on the Patti Smith Group’s “Because the Night,” a fan favorite for decades now.

Cover tunes have always been part of the Springsteen live experience, and the band’s most recent outing included — at various dates — airings of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped,” The Weavers’ “Pay Me My Money Down,” Ben E. King’s “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied),” The Top Notes’ “Twist and Shout,” Moon Mullican’s “Seven Nights to Rock,” Tom Waits’ “Jersey Girl” and The Standells’ “Dirty Water.”

But out of all these songs, it was “Nightshift” that the band performed the most, playing it at all but two shows.

“Gonna be some sweet sounds / Comin’ down / On the nightshift,” Springsteen intones in his take on the tune. “I bet you’re singing proud,” he notes at song’s end, leading by example.

Expect a few surprises and lots of standards

Like those tramps in “Born to Run,” Springsteen set lists were once defined by impulsiveness.

Sure, there have always been staples, those classic cuts that are as much a part of the Springsteen live experience as the sweat on The Boss’ brow.

But from one show to the next, you never quite knew what to expect song-wise, as Springsteen and company were fond of mixing it up.

These days, the band has settled into more of a solidified set list for a given tour.

Of the 26 songs Springsteen played on average during each date of his previous outing, half of them were performed every night, with another 10 aired at most shows.

This still leaves room for variance and a few surprises.

Vintage cuts such as “Atlantic City,” “I’m on Fire,” “Ramrod” and “Night,” to name but a few Springsteen chestnuts rarely played in recent years, all popped up here and there.

But mostly you’re going to get a lot of songs you know by heart, from “Dancing in the Dark” to “Badlands” to “The Rising.”

And as for all those “Glory Days”?

Yeah, they’ll pass you by.

But not just yet.
