Meaning of A Strange Education by The Cinematics

The song "A Strange Education" by The Cinematics is about resilience and determination, and the journey of understanding oneself in order to find love and belonging. The speaker walks a long road until they finally find a place where they feel familiar, safe, and where they can lay down their bones and rest. The speaker describes their journey as a strange education that has led them to the place where their true love waits for them. The lyrics suggest that finding one's way home, and understanding who they are, is an arduous but necessary journey to find and keep love. The song ultimately celebrates the power of resilience and the strength of love.

THE CINEMATICS

"A Strange Education"

THE CINEMATICS IS SUCH an obvious name for an atmospheric rock group that the Glasgow quartet that recently released "A Strange Education" can't be the first to use it. In fact, a previous Cinematics (without the "the") existed in the 1980s before quickly disappearing. Yet the crucial problem for the current band is not that its name seems sort of familiar, but that its music sounds intensely so. Today's Cinematics wouldn't exist without the sweeping post-punk of such early-'80s groups as U2, Echo and the Bunnymen and Modern English.

That overpowering resemblance aside, "A Strange Education" is an entirely presentable album. Although singer-guitarist Scott Rinning emotes painfully in the closing ballad, most of the band's material is taut, driving and catchy. Such songs as "Break," which combines an insistent punk-funk rhythm, an epic keyboard counterpoint and an ascending refrain, skillfully balance the earthy and the celestial. But that sentence could easily end "just the way the Bunnymen did." And until that comparison doesn't automatically attach itself to any discussion of the band's music, the Cinematics will still qualify as a remake.

Following the success of several gloomy post-punk revival bands, the Cinematics formed in 2003 and hail from Glasgow, Scotland, after originally meeting in Dingwall. Inspired by the likes of the Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen, the band includes guitarist Ramsay Miller, bassist Adam Goemans, drummer Ross Bonney, and vocalist/guitarist Scott Rinning. By 2005, the Cinematics were touring the U.K. with Ambulance LTD, the Editors, and Brendan Benson, also signing with TVT Records. Their first single, "Chase," was released in September 2006 and produced by Stephen Hague (Blur, New Order). A full-length, A Strange Education, came out the following year. ~ Kenyon Hopkin

the cinematics a strange education

The Tony Award–winning musical comes direct from Broadway to San Francisco! Meet Usher: a Black, queer writer writing a musical about a Black, queer writer writing a musical about a Black, queer writer . Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, Michael R. Jackson’s Pulitzer Prize–winning, blisteringly funny work of art exposes the heart and soul of a young artist grappling with desires, identity, and instincts he both loves and loathes. Hell-bent on breaking free of his own self-perception, Usher wrestles with the thoughts in his head, brought to life on stage by a hilarious, straight-shooting ensemble. Bold and heartfelt in its truth-telling,  A Strange Loop  is the big, Black, and queer-ass Great American Musical for all!

A Strange Loop  is a co-production with Center Theatre Group.

A Strange Loop is presented by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.  concordtheatricals.com
