Applicants for the MFA in Creative Writing must submit a portfolio of fiction (approximately 20 pages) and/or poetry (8-10 poems) for evaluation. Students who enter the program with no significant course work in English may be required to take two or three undergraduate literature courses as background. Students with graduate work at other institutions may transfer up to 24 s/hrs of equivalent credit toward the MFA degree.

The program at WSU has earned widespread respect over the years for graduating writers who have both good professional prospects and strong teaching skills. The program emphasizes close one-to-one contact between students and teachers in their writing courses. Literature offerings attempt to broaden the student's knowledge of the literary traditions and controversies of which their work will become a part, a background which should allow them to teach or to seek other professional goals in addition to their writing.

Each semester graduate students may enroll in a one-month tutorial with a distinguished visiting poet or fiction writer. Up to two of these tutorials may count toward the degree.

MFA candidates in the final year must take a comprehensive examination based on a reading list selected jointly by the students and their advisors from master reading list. Degree work culminates with the submission of a book-length final writing project of publishable quality.

Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing +

Undergraduate program director.

The creative writing major in English provides intensive training in poetry and fiction with optional course work in nonfiction writing and playwriting. Literature requirements seek to provide a broad foundation in literary tradition and genres.

Students begin their professional training with workshops in fiction and/or poetry. Later, they may opt to take workshops in creative nonfiction and/or playwriting. Students who have at least one upper level workshop in fiction or poetry have the opportunity to work on a tutorial basis with a distinguished visiting writer. See the MFA description for a list of recent visitors.

The English Department at Wichita State is richly endowed with scholarships at the undergraduate level. At a school where the in-state tuition is less than $3,600/year, several provide over $2,000 in aid. In addition there are many smaller awards, including the Grafton Scholarship, which is specifically targeted toward creative writing majors.

Mikrokosmos, the student literary magazine, is edited and produced by graduate and undergraduate majors in the program.

Each semester graduate students may enroll in a one-month tutorial with a distinguished visiting poet or fiction writer. Up to three of these tutorials may count toward the degree.

Sam Taylor is a poet and word-based artist and the author of two books of poems, Body of the World (Ausable/Copper Canyon) and Nude Descending an Empire (Pitt Poetry Series). His work most frequently explores themes of mysticism, sexuality, ecology, politics, suffering, and the mystery of the world. He has received the Amy Lowell Traveling Scholarship for American Poets Traveling Abroad, the Dobie Paisano Fellowship, the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize, the James Michener Fellowship, and residency awards from such places as Yaddo, Djerassi, and the Vermont Studio Center. Recent work has appeared in AGNI, the New Republic, Narrative Magazine, the Hudson Review, and Poetry Daily.

Jason Allen

Jason Allen’s debut novel, The East End, was published in 2019 with HarperCollins/Park Row Books, for which Bonnie Jo Campbell provided the cover blurb: “Every page is filled with wise insights about social class and the human heart.” Jason has since been nominated for an Edgar Award and the Georgia Author of the Year Award. His poetry collection, A Meditation on Fire, was published by Southeast Missouri State University Press, he has published essays with Salon, Literary Hub, and The Strand Magazine, and has been interviewed for The Rumpus, Fiction Writers Review, and numerous literary podcasts. Jason has an MFA from Pacific University and a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from Binghamton University, and he now teaches creative writing in the MFA program at Wichita State University and lives in Kansas with his sweet rescue dog, Luna.

Margaret Dawe

Margaret Dawe studied literature as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia. She received a master’s degree in science from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and worked as a newspaper reporter for the East Hampton Star, where her reporting and feature writing won press association awards. She received a master’s degree in fine arts from Brooklyn College and her novel Nissequott was published by New Directions and was a critical success. The New York Times Book Review listed it as a "new and noteworthy paperback."

Her nonfiction has appeared in the Sonora Review and the Antioch Review. She is finishing her second novel, Missing Woman, and is at work on a third book that is set in Wichita. She is an associate professor and directs Wichita State's creative writing program.

Adam Scheffler is the author of two books of poems: Heartworm, which won the 2021 Moon City Press Prize, and A Dog’s Life, which won the 2016 Jacar Press Book Contest. He grew up in Berkeley, California, received his MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and his PhD in English from Harvard.

Come celebrate the 2023 graduates of the MFA program in creative writing — Adam Benalla, Lara Law and Alexander Romano — as they share selections from their literary works at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at the Beren Gallery in the Ulrich Museum of Art, and join the reception at 2 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend the event at no additional charge. The Beren Gallery will only be open during the event, as the Ulrich Museum is normally closed on Sundays.

Ulrich Museum hosts MFA program anniversary celebration reading

In celebration of the 45th anniversary of Wichita State’s MFA in creative writing program , Kerry Jones ’00 hosted a reading from her newly released short story collection The Last Innocent Year , winner of Southeast Missouri State University’s Nilsen Prize.

A multi-award winning author whose fiction has appeared in many literary journals, including Orchid , Night Train , The Rambler , Bryant Literary Review , Sycamore Review , Alaska Quarterly Review , Seems , and SLAB , Jones holds a BA in English from Mansfield University with dual minors in philosophy and creative writing and is a teaching professor and director of the writing center at Wichita State. She came to WSU from her home state of Pennsylvania in 1998 after being accepted into the creative writing program. She was lured to campus, she says, by a chance glance at a program ad.

She explains, “At the time, 1997 to 1998, I was in an MA program in creative writing at Temple. I’d never wanted an MA, really. I’d wanted an MFA since that’s a terminal degree. I wanted to write, but more than that, I wanted to teach college. It’s typical for English departments to advertise other programs, and on one snowy and dismal Philadelphia afternoon, I stepped out of Temple’s English department and noticed an ad for WSU’s MFA program — ‘Out in the Middle of Somewhere.’ That sounded pretty good to this depressed Pennsylvania girl, so I sent away for application materials. This would mean moving from Pennsylvania to Kansas, and, in my right mind, I knew there was no way I was ever going to do that.”

But she did do that — and has been on faculty at WSU ever since graduating with an MFA in creative writing in 2000. Through the years, she has proven to be fluent in balancing teaching with her own creative writing pursuits and has posted success in both chapters of her professional life. In addition to winning the Nilsen prize, she is a recipient of the Richard Yates Short Story Award, has been a finalist for the Flannery O’Connor Short Fiction Award and was first runner-up for the 2010 Wabash Prize. In 2021, the year she was named winner of the Nilsen Prize, Jones read from her then-newest short story “ Love, American Style ” on a Shock Talk podcast episode.

Critical praise for the seven stories that comprise The Last Innocent Year includes this review by Perry Glasser, author of American Mayhem : “Kerry Jones’s work opens our eyes anew. The subtle interplay among her characters is in stark contrast to the action those characters experience. This is life as we live it, often odd, sometimes funny, but always dramatic.”

Ba in creative writing, program requirements.

A minimum total of 120 credit hours is required for the  BA in creative writing.  In addition to meeting the requirements of the WSU  General Education Program  and the requirements of Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students must meet the following requirements:

A student planning to major in creative writing must complete ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 and thereafter complete 33 credit hours of coursework in English, including the following courses. A minimum of 24 credit hours must be taken at the upper-division (300 or above) level.

Required major courses may also count towards General Education and/or LAS Competencies. Students will need to select additional electives to reach 120 credit hours required for graduation with assistance from an advisor.

To be completed with a grade of B- or better or receive departmental consent for further creative writing coursework.

May be repeated once for credit.

Applied Learning

Students in the BA in creative writing program are required to complete an applied learning or research experience to graduate from the program. The requirement can be met by successful completion of one of two courses: ENGL 401 Fiction Workshop  or ENGL 403 Poetry Workshop .

Professional Writing Series: Writing for Social Media

This badge emphasizes how to successfully write for various social media mediums. Using open educational learning materials, students will learn how to develop a unique and professional social media tone that is directly applicable to their field of business. Students will also learn about the proper written composition for social media, discuss them, have written social media opportunities, and ultimately produce a professional blog site of their own.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the badge students should be able to:

• Describe the core functions of an effective social media writing.
• Identify persuasive and effective elements of high-quality social media platforms for business.
• Analyze and correct examples of writing for social media for conciseness, grammar, punctuation, and successful content.
• Practice developing professional tone through informal blog assignments.
• Develop a professional blog site that advertises their writing for social media.

Credit Hours

Success in this 0.5 credit hour course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of 7.5 hours over the length of the course in direct instruction as provided by the instructor and an additional 15 hours outside of class reading, reflecting, and evaluating the topics for a total of 22.5 hours.

Evaluation:  100% completion of badge criteria

Michael Cole, MA

Michael works as a full-time Instructional Designer for the Media Resources Department and a adjunct instructor for the English department at Wichita State University. He obtained his BA and MA in English Language and Literature at Wichita State University and plans to begin his MFA in Creative Writing in the fall.

Michael has taught both online and face-to-face courses, including English Composition 011, 013, 101, and 102. He has also taught English 210: Business Writing and English 230: Exploring Literature.
