✍ How to Start a Sports Persuasive Essay?

You may be familiar with the term “hook” concerning the essay writing. If not, well, it’s a catchy sentence or two at the beginning of the paper. It’s supposed to intrigue the reader and grab their attention so that they follow your train of thought.

The writer places a hook before the thesis statement of their paper. This way, the reader will be more focused on the core message.

Let’s be real:

Not everyone is interested in sports. Or not in the particular game that you center your paper around. So, in the persuasive essay on sports, a catchy hook is essential. You need an attention grabber to make anyone engaged. Plus, it helps to get a clear understanding of your thesis later. You can check out some college essay examples to better understand what we’re talking about.

Starting an essay with a hook ensures that your audience will want to keep reading.

So, how can you intrigue from the start?

There are several popular hooks for sports-related essays:

  • Quotations . A quotation is an engaging way to introduce your reader to the topic. Make sure the quote is relevant to the rest of the essay. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan
  • Fun Facts . Use some fun or unexpected info about sports to surprise a reader. It can be a great attention-grabber, especially if a reader is not knowledgeable on the subject. A record 202 countries participated in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens.
  • Personal Experience. Using personal experience in a hook is smart in several ways. First, it gives the reader a sense of the author’s presence. Second, it provides information in an engaging, conversational style. I couldn’t stand the idea of working out when I was younger.
  • Anecdotes . Similar to personal experience, anecdotes are entertaining stories. They can be based on a real narrative or be entirely made-up. Your task is to make them humorous. Do you know Jim Thorpe’s response when he received the gold medal for the Decathlon? When the King of Sweden said that Thorpe was the greatest athlete in the world, he said, “Thanks, King.”
  • Rhetorical Questions . Rhetorical questions don’t require an answer. They either state the obvious or encourage one’s thinking. Use them in a hook to immerse the reader into the subject. If LeBron James ends up taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to the playoffs now, and Carmelo Anthony can’t take the Denver Nuggets to the playoffs, what do you think that does to the Rookie of the Year voting?
  • Useful Definition . Starting the first paragraph with a definition sets the tone for your essay. It is an informative, specific lead to your topic. Deck work is the mood-setting moves performed on the deck once the music starts before the swimmers enter the water.
  • Controversial statement . There are usually two sides to any controversy. Your reader will either agree or disagree with a given statement but will stay invested. The U.S. men’s soccer team won’t win a World Cup in the foreseeable future.

Make sure not to make baseless assumptions and statements.

📝 Writing a Persuasive Essay about Sports

Now that you’ve seen the topics let’s talk about writing. Persuasive essays differ from the other academic papers in both the goal and structure. You have to keep in mind that you’re composing not for yourself but for the reader. That’s why you have to present your arguments logically and coherently.

You should outline the persuasive essay before writing.

Here are some tips on writing a killer persuasive essay about sports:

  • Choose a topic that you can handle. Don’t try to compose a paper on the game that you know nothing about. It’s too tiring and time-consuming. Remember that it takes months for a fan to learn everything about their favorite sport. If you don’t have such years-long passion, focus on the more straightforward aspects of your topic.
  • Research beforehand . Even if you’re a sports fan, and especially if you’re not. There are plenty of rules and scandals that you need to consider to sound convincing. Look up some fun facts or entertaining stories. Sports topics usually give you plenty of material to play around with.
  • Take notes. The more notes you take while researching, the less work you’ll have to do after. And you won’t have to reread the materials to find that one sports event that you’ve forgotten about. The industry is quite vibrant with exceptional cases. Make sure you keep track of all the information that might be useful.
  • Pick the issues to discuss according to the evidence . If you can’t support an argument with enough credible proof, don’t include it in your essay. Both argumentative and persuasive essays require you to stay on top of your argumentation.
  • Outline and draft your paper before writing the final version. When you’re writing on recent events, you may get new information at any moment. So, draft before composing. In case you decide to include some new evidence or improve an argument, it won’t be messy. Outlining will help to organize your thoughts comprehensively and concisely.

Read the sports news before writing the final version of the essay.

In case you missed it: unforgettable quotes from the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games

Ezra Frech of Team United States reacts after winning the gold medal after the Men's 100m - T63 on day five of the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games witnessed unforgettable moments of sport, history and personal triumph. Athletes from all walks of life delivered powerful messages, shared their deepest emotions, and reminded the world of the limitless possibilities of the human body and mind.

Read on to discover some of the most memorable quotes from Paralympians all around the world.

Defying the odds and embracing life

Loida Zabala (ESP) , competing in her fifth Paralympic Games after being diagnosed with cancer just months earlier, was emotional about simply being there:

"The message I would like to send is that on many occasions you may be given news that you may not have expected. For example me - when they told me that I had advanced stage 4 cancer. But life can still give you gifts and moments that you don't expect. And that is why you have to enjoy life to the fullest - because we don't know how long we live, but what we do know is that the present is here and that we can enjoy it like never before."

Ali Truwit (USA) , who lost her leg in a life-threatening shark attack in 2023, reflected on the importance of embracing a second chance:

"When I was faced with a life-changing trauma, I worked to see the positive and focus on gratitude and let that carry me. When you are truly faced with death and you understand what a second chance at life means, you want to make the most of it. So, I have worked to do that and it's not been without an incredible, incredible support system."

Zakia Khudadadi (RPT) , after becoming the first-ever medalist for the Refugee Paralympic Team, used her platform to send a powerful message:

"Afghanistan is my country, and today the Taliban are in power in my country. It's important for me to show strength to the Afghan women and girls in the world . I've worked hard for that, to show them the medal. I hope the world does not forget the women and girls of Afghanistan."

Hannah Cockroft (GBR) , following her win in the women’s 100m T34, shared a heartwarming moment that reminded her of the impact of her legacy:

"In the call room this morning, someone told me, ‘I watched you in 2012 and that’s why I am here. ’ I really hope there are some girls at home who are doing the same because that’s what it’s all about. Hopefully, today, some new dreams have been born."

Ezra Frech (USA) , who won two golds in Para athletics , spoke of his mission to change perceptions of disability:

"I believe I was put here on this earth to normalise disability, change perceptions about what is possible as an amputee , winning back-to-back golds, leading the Paralympic movement until 2028. That’s why it was written. The universe gave me the script and all I had to do was this, this, this, and this was going to happen tonight."

Yang Yue (CHN) , who claimed gold in women’s F64 discus, shared an important message for her daughter:

"I want to tell my daughter this: it pays to persevere. If you persevere for long enough, your dreams may just come true."

Christie Raleigh-Crossley (USA) , three-time Paris 2024 Para swimming medallist, responded powerfully to the verbal and online attacks she faced before the final:

"When I said earlier today that I wanted to change the perception of what a Paralympian is, and what you think of when you see a Paralympian - because I don't fit into their box, because you can't measure me with a measuring stick somehow that invalidates my disability. Because you can't see the hole in my brain. I'll shave my head tomorrow, and you can see the scar and the dent if you want."

Para canoeist Brianna Hennessy (CAN) discussed what it means to be a Paralympian:

"The Paralympics means so much more because everyone here has a million reasons to give up, and we've all chosen to just go on... It's a bigger picture than the medals, it's a bigger picture than our country's flag. It's all of us coming together on that world stage and representing something greater than ourselves."

The power of family and support

Geert Schipper (NED) , who won bronze in the Para triathlon , spoke about what truly mattered to him:

"I'm so happy my family was here to support me, because to me, that's my gold medal. The medal I got here is called a bronze, but my gold medal is my family."

Christie Raleigh-Crossley (USA) , spoke about expecting to break down during her victory ceremony after winning a surprise gold in the women’s 100m backstroke S9:

"I'm going to lose it on the podium later. I know I'm going to bawl like a little kid listening to the anthem. But, yeah, I feel like I made my kids proud, and that's all I really wanted."

Sanne Voets (NED), competing in Para equestrian at the historic ChĂąteau de Versailles, sent a message to 17th-century French monarch Louis XIV in a poetic tribute to her horse, Demantur:

"Demi is my own Sun King. That's why I waved at the castle at the end. Thank you for lending us your property, for doing this dance. That's the biggest win for today."

Finding lightness in competition

Noah Hanssen (USA) , a wheelchair fencer, summed up the joy of sword fighting with a childhood reference:

"I grew up on 'Star Wars' and 'Lord of the Rings'. Playing with swords is fun, that's the long and short of it. I knew that when I was seven. I know that now."

Jozef Metelka (SVK) , after winning Para track cycling C4 individual Pursuit gold due to an opponent’s fall, couldn't help but laugh at his good fortune:

"I won with massive luck, come on. I was five seconds behind and I won because Archie fell. I was incredibly lucky. I mean, when was the last time something like this happened? When T-Rex was around?"

Korban Best (USA) , looking ahead to LA 2028, revealed his plans for the dance floor:

" Moonwalk is one, the Dougie and maybe the jerk. I think LA (Los Angeles 2028) would appreciate a good Dougie. But I’ve got a couple of years to work on it (and) really perfect it."

Michael Roeger (AUS) , who took silver in the Para athletics men’s 1500m T46, made light of his drastic appearance change:

“I’ve had long hair since 2019 but I thought I’d try and get a few more seconds (off his time) so I cut it. Then I thought I’d add a bit of peroxide to it. I was walking around the (Paralympic) Village with a hat on and nobody recognised me for the last few days. Someone said I looked like a white tiger.”

Aurelie Aubert (FRA) , after reaching the final in boccia , revealed her secret for staying calm:

" I left my brain in the storage before going into the match. The pressure of the semifinal or the tiebreak didn't matter."

Alice Tai (GBR) , who secured her second Para swimming gold in the women's 50m freestyle S8 at Paris 2024, shared a humorous yet nearly career-altering moment:

"I called (my coach) and I was like, 'I am going to have to retire, I am not getting back down to my times, I am like 20 seconds off in a 100m'. It turns out I was swimming in a 33m pool, not a 25m pool and I hadn't realised."

Lessons from sport and life

Esther Nworgu (NGR) reflected on what sport has taught her about herself on her path to Para powerlifting silver:

"While (competing) in sports there are a lot of things that you realise about yourself that you never knew. Sport is like an X-ray. It brings you out and shows you what you are inside."

Jason Tabansky (USA) , reflected on what Para archery has taught him:

"In archery, if you have a bad shot you've got to let it go. You can't get that arrow back. So you've got to move on to the next one. In life, if you do something that didn't turn out right, you've got to forget about it and try and either fix it on the next try or just move on. Can't let it drag you down."

Nuanchan Phonsila (THA) , who claimed bronze in the boccia mixed pairs BC4, shared how deeply her sport resonates with her:

"Boccia is a friend with whom I share a strong bond. And that's only the first part of the important place it holds in my life. To me, it has also been a gateway to opportunities and to meet new people around the world."

William Schoonover (USA) , drew parallels between music and fencing:

"It feels like riffing and jazz, because so much of it is these weird syncopations and offbeats. If you create a rhythm like you're in a dance club, you're going to get hit all day long. But if you keep breaking up the rhythm and being hard to predict, then musically, it’s more like jazz."

Essay on Importance of Games and Sports for Class 12 and Graduation

The games and sports are very important for human health. They build our body and develop our mind. They give ample exercise to our muscles. In this way, they make our body strong and prevent us from getting unhealthy fats. They refresh our mind and give us sufficient amusement. After a day’s hard work, man feels tired and exhausted. He needs rest. He plays the game in order to refresh his mind. Games and sports remove the boredom of life and make him fit tor the next day’s work.

“Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” – (Heywood Broun)

In our country, the games can be divided into two groups, the outdoor games and indoor games. The outdoor games include cricket, hockey and football. Cricket is more popular than other games. During the days of cricket matches, everybody talks about it. The cricket matches are seen and watched by everybody with great interest. The cricket stars are discussed everywhere. There is a great excitement and thrill in the entire population of the country. The hockey matches are also viewed and watched with great interest. They are full of interest, thrill and suspense. They last for a short duration but they create more excitement than cricket matches.

The indoor games also keep us busy, fit and healthy. They include such games as table tennis and playing Carrum. They give exercise to our mind and memory. They are a test of the power of our intelligence and skill. They become harmful if we devote much of our time to them.

“Sport is a preserver of health. (Keats)

The games and sports build our character too. It is on the playground that the qualities of a player come to the surface. A good player plays the game in a sporting spirit. It means that he is always fair and just in his dealings. He plays the game for the sake of it. Victory or defeat has no meaning for him. If he wins the game, he does not feel proud at it. If he loses it, he is not discouraged. He does not violate the rules at the games. He is impartial in his judgements. He is only interested in the glow and zeal of the game.

“Pain is only temporary but victory is forever.” – (Jeremy H.)

A good player is a lover of mankind. He is always for love, goodwill and good sense. If he goes abroad, he carries with him the message of love. He is the true ambassador of his nation. The honour and glory of his nation is uppermost in his mind. He does not do anything which may shatter the image of his nation. He is always dignified and upright in his dealings. In the playground, his conduct is always marked with sportsman spirit. He does not get angry even at his insult. He does not abuse his rivals. He is free of ill will hatred and malice. He is tolerant and broad-minded. A good player plays the game in a team Spirit. He does not play his game for his honour but he plays the game for his team. As a member of the team, he is very helpful and co-operative. He may lose his points and score, but he will not let his companion suffer. He obeys the discipline of the team faithfully. The word of the captain is a law for him. A good player is a selfless and sincere worker. He is devoted to his mission. In short, in the playground, he learns to be fair, just and good.

“Persistence can change failure into extraordinary achievement.” – (Marv Levy)

Opinion | Breaking down ESPN’s decision to use AI to write some game stories

Espn says ai helps it cover ‘under-served sports.’ journalists argue the network should just hire more journalists..

quotation essay sports and games

ESPN made a major announcement on Thursday. The sports media giant announced it would implement artificial intelligence to write game recap stories for the Premier Lacrosse League and National Women’s Soccer League.

As with anything involving the rapidly changing alliance of AI and journalism, what followed were lots of questions and a little uneasiness.

ESPN is making the case that AI helps it cover “under-served sports” — leagues that ESPN currently does not fully cover with flesh-and-blood sportswriters. In other words, this argument seems to be that using AI to cover sports or leagues is better than not covering them at all.

On the other hand? The fear among living and breathing journalists that this is a slippery slope, and that AI is taking their jobs. They say: Instead of using AI to write lacrosse and soccer stories, why doesn’t ESPN just hire more journalists? And if ESPN can use AI to cover those sports, what’s to stop them from using AI to cover more and more other sports?

In its announcement , ESPN laid out the crux of its argument: “The AI-generated recaps aim to enhance coverage of under-served sports, providing fans with content that was previously unavailable. These sports do not currently have game recaps on ESPN digital platforms, and these AI-generated recaps will be a tool to augment existing coverage — not replace it.”

ESPN added, “Each AI-generated recap will be reviewed by a human editor to ensure quality and accuracy.”

ESPN also announced that it will be clear which stories were generated by AI. The top of the story, where the traditional byline would be, will say, “ESPN Generative AI Services.” After the story, there will be a tagline that says, “ESPN Generative AI Services creates recaps from event data and/or transcripts that are reviewed by human editors before posting; email [email protected] for corrections.”

The new plan will go into effect today.

ESPN said in its statement, “The aim is to learn, determine how to responsibly leverage new technology, and begin to establish best practices — all while augmenting our existing coverage of select sports and allowing ESPN staff to focus on their more differentiating feature, analysis, investigative, and breaking news coverage.”

That last part is an argument that many in the journalism world point to when considering the benefits of AI: that the use of the technology to write simpler articles, such as a game story, frees up their journalists to work on bigger, so-called “more important” stories.

At ESPN’s recent “Media Day” meeting with reporters, ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said, “AI is not the awful, terrible disruptor that many people think it will be. I personally believe that AI will be very helpful and beneficial to the sports industry and the sports fan, and we’re starting to see that.”

Pitaro gave examples of using the technology to cut highlights of, again, lesser-covered sports. Pitaro also talked about closed captioning, saying, “How do we do closed captioning at scale? AI is already helping us significantly there. I commute. I drive myself to Bristol every day. It’s an hour drive for me each way. And I want to consume our long-form reporting, our investigative reporting, which is super high quality. Having the ability to just click play and hear the narration of a long-form investigative story is incredibly valuable to me as a commuter. Those are some examples of how we see this as nothing but positive for the sports fan and for the business.”

ESPN is not the first news organization to implement AI this way. Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming notes that The Associated Press uses AI.

An AP spokesperson told Fleming, “AP uses artificial intelligence and automation when it can free up our journalists to do more meaningful work. We use AI to produce audio-to-text transcriptions, create short lists in predictable environments, tag content for search, and write corporate earnings reports and some sports preview and recap stories. We also use automation for the distribution of financial markets and sports data.”

But all this still makes some in the journalism world queasy.

Besides doing a job that has always been for actual journalists, AI is not known for writing particularly captivating stories.

In a column for Defector , Luis Paez-Pumar wrote, “The upshot would be that ESPN is beefing up its coverage of ‘underserved’ sports (and who, pray tell, is responsible for this underserving?) not by hiring people who can and already do write these kinds of stories, but rather by feeding existing soccer and lacrosse journalists’ work into a machine aimed at making them obsolete. Or, at least, it will try to make them obsolete; nothing about AI’s recent history points to this being successful in any way except fattening the wallets of AI’s self-interested investor-evangelists.”

The AI train continues to plow forward, and ESPN is clearly jumping aboard. Used responsibly and judiciously, AI could be a helpful and worthwhile tool for any media company without being a detriment to real journalists. But if the real goal is to simply save money by using AI, particularly when it’s an inferior product to a reasonably good journalist, it’s hard to get on board if you’re a media consumer.

I’m willing to give ESPN the benefit of the doubt when it comes to using AI  to cover sports leagues they have never really covered. But is this really just a trial balloon? If so, let’s see what comes next before we declare this a good or bad idea.

Sulzberger’s powerful essay

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger wrote a powerful essay Thursday about the “quiet war” against press freedoms in the United States. And he wrote his lengthy piece for, of all places, the Times’ chief competitor — The Washington Post. More on that decision in a moment.

But let’s get to what Sulzberger wrote.

Sulzberger asks if the playbook used by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbĂĄn to dismantle the news media in his country could be repeated here.

Sulzberger wrote, “It’s not a crazy question. As they seek a return to the White House, former president Donald Trump and his allies have declared their intention to increase their attacks on a press he has long derided as ‘the enemy of the people.’”

He added, “If Trump follows through on promises to continue that campaign in a second term, his efforts would likely be informed by his open admiration for the ruthlessly effective playbook of authoritarians such as Orbán, whom Trump recently met with at Mar-a-Lago and praised as ‘a smart, strong, and compassionate leader.’”

Sulzberger said he and colleagues have studied how press freedoms have been attacked in places such as Hungary, India and Brazil. The countries may be different, but the playbooks are the same. They include things such as sowing distrust in the media; normalizing harassment of journalists; exploiting the courts to, as Sulzberger wrote, “effectively impose additional logistical and financial penalties on disfavored journalism;” and, again as Sulzberger wrote, “use the levers of power not just to punish independent journalists but also to reward those who demonstrate fealty to their leadership.”

That certainly sounds familiar in this country under a certain former president.

Sulzberger wrote, “As that list makes clear, these leaders have realized that crackdowns on the press are most effective when they’re at their least dramatic — not the stuff of thrillers but a movie so plodding and complicated that no one wants to watch it.”

Sulzberger made it clear that it is not his intention to wade into politics, adding, “I disagree with those who have suggested that the risk Trump poses to the free press is so high that news organizations such as mine should cast aside neutrality and directly oppose his reelection. It is beyond shortsighted to give up journalistic independence out of fear that it might later be taken away.”

He later added, “At the same time, as the steward of one of the country’s leading news organizations, I feel compelled to speak out about threats to the free press, as my predecessors and I have done to leaders of both parties. I am doing so here, in the pages of an esteemed competitor, because I believe the risk is shared by our entire profession, as well as all who depend on it.”

This is an important essay that cannot be adequately summed up here. Carve out 20 minutes to read it.

Meanwhile, Sulzberger addressed why he offered his piece to the Post in a memo to his staff at the Times, writing, “I’m grateful to The Post for running it, especially given the length. It’s just another example of how The Post, in addition to being an esteemed competitor, has long been one of our closest partners on matters of press freedom. These challenges cannot be solved by one institution.”

Paris 2024 Paralympic Games: Swiss dominate wheelchair marathon

The final day of the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games saw Switzerland claim gold in both wheelchair marathons.

Switzerland won both Paralympic wheelchair marathons on Sunday while the Netherlands secured back-to-back women’s wheelchair basketball titles, denying the United States on the final day of competition.

China finished top of the medals table in Paris, as they have for every Paralympics since Athens in 2004. They had 94 golds, followed by Britain with 49 and USA with 36.

As the six weeks of Olympics and Paralympics fever in the City of Light drew to a close, venues were being dismantled before the closing ceremony at the Stade de France.

Early in the morning, Catherine Debrunner propelled her racing wheelchair through the autumnal chill in the streets of Paris to win the women’s marathon.

The 29-year-old Swiss athlete added to the four gold medals she has already won on the track at these games, ranging from the 400 metres to the 5,000 metres, with a silver medal in the T53 100 metres thrown in for good measure.

“I’m extremely exhausted but very happy,” said Debrunner. “Winning this marathon means everything to me because to end this Paralympics with this is really something special.”

Australia’s Madison de Rozario took a courageous silver medal behind her, competing despite the death of her father on the day of the Paris opening ceremony.

Switzerland’s Marcel Hug, 38, made up for a disappointing games on the track by dominating the men’s wheelchair marathon, finishing three minutes and 40 seconds ahead of Hua Jin of China.

Weir bids farewell after fifth Paralympic Games

One of Britain’s greatest Paralympic athletes of all time, David Weir, announced that Paris was his last games after he finished fifth.

“It’s my last event for Great Britain,” 45-year-old Weir said. “No more international racing for me. I’ll do the city marathons.

“I feel proud and I am very emotional.”

A minute’s silence was held after one of the women’s marathons in memory of Rebecca Cheptegei, the Ugandan Olympic marathon runner who died this week after a horrific attack by her former boyfriend.

Cheptegei had finished 44th in the women’s marathon on August 11.

Dutch make it back-to-back women’s wheelchair basketball titles

The Netherlands scored a convincing 63-49 win against the USA to retain the women’s wheelchair basketball title they won at Tokyo 2020.

Bo Kramer topscored for the Dutch with 23 points and had 12 rebounds, while Mariska Beijer added 22 points.

Rose Hollermann hit 17 points for the USA but they were dominated for most of the game at Bercy Arena.

The Americans must wait until the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics before trying to win a title their men secured for a third games in a row on Saturday. The USA women’s last title came at the 2016 Rio Games.

China beat Canada 65-43 to win the bronze medal.

Organisers have promised to create the feel of a huge open-air nightclub at the Stade de France for the closing ceremony later on Sunday.

The hour-long set, which will see 24 DJs mix in one track each on stage, will be opened and closed by French electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, 76.

The ceremony will also see the Olympic cauldron extinguished and a symbolic handover from Paris to Los Angeles, which will host the next games in 2028.

Rounding out the medals table, the Netherlands were fourth with 27 golds, Brazil finished with 25 and Italy won 24 golds in sixth place.

Ukraine’s athletes overcame considerable obstacles posed by the war against invading Russian forces to finish in seventh place with 22 golds, while the host nation, France, were eighth with 19 golds.

How Jets' Aaron Rodgers fared in long-awaited return, plus what it means for veteran QB and team going forward

Rodgers was playing in his first game post-achilles tear.

aaron-rodgers.jpg

Aaron Rodgers made his return to the NFL on Monday as the Jets quarterback played in his first game since suffering a season-ending Achilles tear to begin the 2023 season. The stage was nearly identical for Rodgers. New York was playing under the lights of "Monday Night Football" to begin the season in Week 1, which is exactly where he went down with the injury a year ago. This time around, Rodgers was able to get out of the game healthy, but not as the victor. In the Jets' 32-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers , Rodgers flashed some glimpses of his former MVP self, but the New York offense was largely marred with inconsistency in the losing effort.

On the opening drive of the game, Rodgers only dropped back to pass once, coming on a third-and-3 attempt at the New York 37-yard line. The 40-year-old signal-caller hit Allen Lazard squarely in the hands, but the veteran receiver dropped the ball, resulting in a Jets punt. Rodgers then had a shuffle pass to Breece Hall on the first play of New York's second drive, which the back fumbled to give the ball to San Francisco.

Through the first couple of drives of the game, Rodgers didn't do too much, but that was largely due to circumstances around him. One of the peaks for Rodgers in this Week 1 opener came during New York's third possession. He helped orchestrate a 12-play, 70-yard scoring drive that culminated in a goal-line run by Hall. It was during this drive were we got a glimpse of what this offense is capable of.

Rodgers completed all but one of his seven attempts on the drive, including three completions on third down, Each of those conversions went to Garrett Wilson , and the connection between the quarterback-receiver duo seemed to be in midseason form at that juncture. Rodgers first hit him on a back-shoulder throw up the left sideline to convert on a third-and-8.

The duo connected three plays later over the middle on a third-and-7 to move the chains.

The final conversion on the drive brought the Jets into the red zone with Wilson sliding just past the sticks.

While that showed arguably the ceiling of what the offense under Rodgers is capable of, the unit ran hot in cold in this game. That was one of their better series of the night, but then they posted back-to-back three-and-outs before halftime. Rodgers seemed to move around fine in the pocket, but the veteran quarterback seemed a touch slow when he needed to move outside of it to avoid pressure, including on this sack from Leonard Floyd (who coincidentally was the one who hit him when he tore his Achilles last year).

While Rodgers threw an interception in this loss, it's hard to pin the turnover solely on the four-time MVP. Yes, Rodgers faced pressure in a collapsing pocket and forced the ball in a tight window to Wilson, but the ball bounced directly into the arms of Niners linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles in what was a stroke of tough luck. Regardless, that turnover led to more points for San Francisco as the club built its lead even more.

Remember how we said this Rodgers-led offense ran hot and cold on Monday? Well, the second possession of the second half for New York was the final time it was truly humming. Rodgers had two vintage throws during this stretch, both of which went to former Packers buddy Allen Lazard. The first was a laser on the left sideline.

The second throw was a play Rodgers has made famous throughout his career. After the 49ers jumped offsides, Rodgers had a free play and tossed up a deep shot down the middle of the field to Lazard, who walked in for the 36-yard touchdown. At the time, the broadcast noted it was Rodgers' 18th career passing touchdown on a free play.

That was certainly the highlight of Rodgers' night. Meanwhile, the lowlight, in my estimation, came with under eight minutes to play in regulation. After failing to convert on third-and-1, the Jets kept the offense on the field trying to cut into the 29-13 lead. Rodgers dropped back and had Wilson over the middle for the conversion, but seemed to throw the ball a touch behind him, allowing a 49ers defender to disrupt the pass. The result was a turnover on downs.

Defense standin' on business đŸ˜€ #NYJvsSF on ESPN pic.twitter.com/ruOPozajQe — San Francisco 49ers (@49ers) September 10, 2024

Tyrod Taylor  came in to relieve Rodgers for the final minutes of the game. On the night, Rodgers completed 13 of his 21 pass attempts for 167 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. While there were glimpses of what he could be in this Jets offense, the quarterback will need to produce a more consistent product out of himself and the offense as a whole.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Sept. 11, 2024, 11:38 a.m. ET

Follow along with live updates and debate analysis on the Trump and Harris campaigns .

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Robert Saleh: 0-1 with Aaron Rodgers feels better than 1-0 without him

  • Josh Alper ,

It’s said that you are what your record says you are, but Jets head coach Robert Saleh prefers his losing record after one game this year to the winning one his team had last year.

Saleh’s club looked overmatched on both sides of the ball in Monday night’s 32-19 loss to the 49ers, but quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t leave the game after four snaps with a torn Achilles. That’s what happened on the first Monday night of the 2023 season and that’s why Saleh says it feels better to be 0-1 even though the Jets pulled out an overtime win over the Bills a year ago.

“You know what? Unfortunately, it does ,” Saleh said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com.

Offensive rough patches were to be expected given Rodgers’s long layoff and the lack of preseason action for the first team, but the Jets defense giving up points on eight straight possessions was less predictable. Saleh said the issues that led to that are “definitely going to get fixed” and he’ll get his first chance to show off the repair work in Tennessee in Week Two.
