My Future Plan

I often wonder about my future as I am about to finish my schooling. There are a number of questions in my mind, and the one which mostly revolves around my mind is which profession I should choose. It is difficult for me to make a choice because I am aware that the decision will impact my entire life. I always dream of a profession that I can enjoy, that brings a challenge to me and satisfies me. I believe in a job that is like a hobby for me. I just don’t want to do the job to make money. Instead, I want to love my profession and duty. Also, my job should be such that I contribute to society and help people.

From my childhood, I always wanted to treat people and cure their diseases. So, to fulfil this dream of becoming a doctor, I have some future plans. Firstly, I have to complete my secondary schooling. Then, I have to complete my higher secondary education, and thereafter, I would like to study in a prestigious medical college and later become a doctor.

Studying medical science takes a long time. It is a difficult course and requires a tremendous amount of hard work and patience. I hope that I will be able to meet all the challenges and complete my studies well. After the completion of my studies, I would like to work in a hospital, so I can make my dream come true.

During my studies, I will have to work on different biology projects. The experience of working on these projects will give me insight into science and help me in becoming a good doctor. In addition, I also have to develop patience and diligence. During the summer vacations, I will have to work under a good doctor as an assistant nurse. It will help me to get real-life experience of how doctors work. Moreover, the learning will help me to deal with patients, nurses, doctors and staff of the hospital. It will be the best kickstart for my career as a future medical student.

As for now, I am focusing on my studies and looking forward to completing my schooling. I do have a future plan for my family. But, before that, I would like to travel the world. I want to visit different countries like America, Finland and London and travel to all the continents. After finishing my education and going on a world trip, I would like to settle down in my life. So, I will get married and would love to have a small family. I would like to have a small home in a natural and calm place where I can live and enjoy myself with my family.

Writing About Your Future Plans – A Complete Guide

Share now :.

A lot of people wonder if writing about your future plans is worth it.

Can’t you just imagine what you want to do, and then do it?

Can’t you just make a plan in your mind, and then pursue that plan in your life?

These are great questions.

However, they speak to a fundamental question that’s vitally important to understand when it comes to goal setting.

The statistics show us that people who write down their goals are statistically more likely to succeed at those goals than people who only make plans in their mind.

There are many reasons for why this is the case.

But I generally like to describe it as follows.

When you write down your goals instead of just keeping them in your head, you’re fulfilling an important part of the process of taking the dreams that are in your imagination and manifesting them in the real world.

And then, when you actually break down those goals and make a cohesive plan of action, what you’re actually doing is creating a roadmap to success that’ll equip you to accomplish whatever you want to achieve in life.

But this leads to another important question.

How do you do it?

How do you set yourself to the task of writing about your future plans?

And perhaps even more importantly, where do you start?

These are actually the most important questions to ask yourself.

And in this post, you’re going to learn a nine-step process for helping you to write down your future plans in a cohesive format.

That will give you a much better chance for success.

Let’s break it down.

How Do You Write A Future Plan?

Writing a future plan basically consists of making a plan for your future, and then writing that plan out as a set of goals.

Of course, this will require you to blend long-term goals with medium and short-term goals.

  • Ideally, you would want to set long-term goals to solidify a picture of what you’re ultimately aiming for.
  • Then, you’d break those long-term goals down into medium-term goals to figure out what you need to do in the next three to five years.
  • And then, you’d break those medium-term goals down into short-term goals—which will tell you what to do on a daily and weekly basis.

But also, before you can even begin this process, you need to answer another important question.

What Are Your Plans For The Future?

Dr. Henry Link write down a plan

It’s helpful to understand what success looks like to you before you begin the process of pursuing success.

Now, this isn’t always an exact science.

Sometimes, it’s difficult to know exactly where you’d like to end up one day.

Therefore, a bit of flexibility is most definitely called for.

However, it’s also important to be as specific as you can be.

The more specific you are, the more on-target your efforts will tend to be.

Think of it like shooting an arrow.

If you know exactly where the target is, and if you can see the target clearly outlined and marked down-range, then you’ll basically have a much better chance of hitting the target with the arrow.

By contrast, if you have no idea where the target is, and everything is dark, then the best you can do is this—you can really only point in any direction and shoot—trusting fully in luck, and understanding that there’s only a very small chance that you’ll actually hit what you want to hit.

Knowing which direction the target is in, and/or at least knowing the general vicinity of the target in relation to where you are, definitely gives you a better advantage than not knowing where it is at all.

But of course, the more specific you can get—and the more information you can glean about it—the better off you’ll be.

How Can I Write About My Future?

You can only write about your future when you come up with some kind of plan, direction, or vision for how you’d like your future to look.

This is really the first step.

So once you solidify some kind of vision or idea for what you’d like your future to look like, you’ll be ready to start writing about your future plans using the following nine-step guide.

Keep in mind, this process doesn’t have to be perfect.

If you’re struggling to figure out what you want for your future, read this post about how to live your life on purpose.

Now, let’s dive into it and talk about it.

9 Steps – How To Write About Your Future Plans

1. determine where you want to be in life.

Anne Frank quote

This is a pretty simple and straightforward thought process.

It’s in your best interest to identify the target before releasing the arrow.

This could mean deciding on a particular type of career you’d like to have, or focusing on what you’d like your purpose in life to be.

You should get as specific with this as possible.

If you don’t know the specifics, of course, just figuring out a general direction is a great way to start.

Need some additional guidance with this? Check out this post: 12 Steps To Finding Your Passion And Purpose In Life .

2. Choose A Journal

You’re definitely going to want to use a journal, a goal-setting book, a goal achievement system, or even just a notebook to start writing down your goals.

To help choose the perfect journal for you, check out our resource page . We use that page to keep a list of our favorite journals and goal achievement systems. We also review systems on that page to help you choose the journal that’s best for you.

Once you’ve decided what you’re going to use, you’ll be ready to move on to the next step.

3. Write Down Your Major Life Goals

Jim Lovell quote make things happen

This is the part where you start with your long-term goals.

  • What do you want to achieve in your future?
  • What kind of career do you want to have?
  • How much money would you like to make?
  • What would you like your family life to look like?
  • What would you like to accomplish in life?
  • What would you like to be known for?

These are all important questions to ask as you dream about the future, turn those dreams into goals , and then write them down.

And make no mistake— writing them down is actually a very crucial part of the process .

If you figure out an answer to one of the above questions (or to a different question that helps you to define what one of your major life goals is), make sure to write it down in your journal .

Always write it down, even if you’re not quite sure you understand it or that it’s even correct.

Remember, this is all a part of the process of getting those dreams out of your head and manifested in the real world.

This is the first step toward turning your goals into reality.

4. Back-Engineer Those Goals To Figure Out What You Need To Do To Get There

When you write out a long term goal, it’ll probably seem almost impossible to achieve at first glance.

It’ll probably be very big, and it’ll likely involve many steps.

So the first thing that you’ll need to do is to back engineer that goal and figure out what it’ll take to get from where you are now to the finish line.

This is the process of breaking long-term goals down into medium-term goals.

Need some help with these more intermediate goal-setting skills? Read our quick-start guide to SMART goals .

5. Break Those Goals Down Into Monthy, Weekly, And Daily Milestones

Jim Ryun quote write down your plans

This is where writing down your short-term goals becomes incredibly important.

Once you start to break down those medium-term goals, you’ll realize that there are steps that you’ll need to take every day, every week, and every month to help carry you toward the realization of those goals.

But here’s the thing.

It takes hard work to stick to goals like this. That’s why it’s so important to make this part of the process a habit!

Download my weekly goal-setting sheet , print out a few, and give it a try.

You can also read our quick-start guide on how to make goal-setting a habit in your life .

6. Write Down Your Goals On A Consistent Basis

At this point, I might start to sound like a broken record.

But I can’t stress this enough.

Every single day, when you wake up in the morning, spend some time writing down your daily goals to figure out what you have to do today to help carry you toward your medium and long-term goals in the future.

Ideally, we want to make sure that hardly a day goes by where we don’t make progress on our long-term goals in some form or fashion.

See, this is why writing down your goals is so important.

It helps you to stay intentional—and to use your time, energy, effort, and resources to help you achieve what you really want in life.

All too often, people waste their valuable resources reacting to life and chasing things that aren’t going to carry them toward the future they really want for themselves .

Maintaining the discipline to write down your daily goals helps you to avoid this trap and instead helps you to focus on the things that really matter.

7. Stick To Your Plan And Start Working Toward Your Dreams

Ray Kroc quote requirements for success

The first day or two of goal setting may seem new and exciting.

But if you’re like most people, it’ll very quickly become not only ‘normal,’ but even perhaps a little bit dull and boring .

Eventually, it’ll start to feel like a grind.

You’ll start to feel like every day kind of blends into the next day, in the sense that while you’ll be knocking out short term daily goals, you may start to feel like your medium and long term goals are a long way off.

And this is where a lot of people stop writing down their goals and just give up on the process.

But here’s the thing:

It’s so important to stick to your plan and to keep working toward your dreams.

Writing about your future plans is only part of the equation.

It’s also vitally important that you adopt a diligent work ethic and make sure to stay consistent with the plan as you move forward.

8. Review, Revise, And Adapt As Needed

Sometimes, once you get started pursuing a goal, you’ll realize that you might want to review, revise, and adapt that goal.

Sometimes, you may discover new information that leads you in a different direction.

Or sometimes, you might get started on a goal and realize that it’s not what you really want.

In such cases, you may be tempted to slightly revise your goals, adapt your methods, or even pivot to something completely new.

It’s really important to understand that this is a fundamental and natural part of the process.

As we continue on our journey, we’re all going to change.

We’re all going to learn new things and evolve along the way.

Don’t fight this. Make sure that you understand the difference between giving up and pivoting .

Giving up means to cease all effort and to retreat back to the state of your previous comfort zone, effectively deciding that you’re going to stop trying to make any progress whatsoever.

Pivoting means deciding to invest that effort in a new or revised direction because you’ve determined that this new updated direction is actually a better use of your time and fits in better with your passion and your purpose.

So don’t be afraid to review, revise and adapt.

9. Never Give Up

And finally, we reach what is perhaps the most difficult part of the process:

Never giving up!

Babe Ruth may have said it best.

“You just can’t beat the person who never gives up.”

However, there are many quotes by many successful people that demonstrate an understanding of the fact that if you wish to succeed in life, giving up must never be an option.

For example, Winston Churchill said:

“Never give up on something that you can’t go a day without thinking about.”

And Dale Carnegie once said:

“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.”

See, even uttering the phrase “never give up” might sound cliche.

But it’s a simple truth.

And it can’t be overstated.

The road to success isn’t always easy .

There are going to be challenges, pitfalls, trials, and difficult times.

And there’s a 100% guarantee that you’re going to feel like giving up at least a few times along the way.

However, it’s also vitally important to understand that the only true way to fail is to give up .

If you care about something, are willing to adapt, and you keep learning and keep striving forward to achieve it, you’re bound to make progress.

And as long as you continue to make progress, you’ll continue to increase the odds that you’re going to succeed at it.

At that point, it’s really just a simple math problem.

It might take a while, but that’s okay. It’s never too late to succeed.

Conclusion – What Is Your Plan For Life?

Hopefully, this post has inspired you to consider writing about your future plans and creating goals for yourself.

Turning your dreams into goals, and then turning those goals into reality, is a process that many people think about—but very few end up following through on.

And the reason for that, honestly, is because it’s not always easy.

If you follow these nine steps, you’re bound to start making progress.

And at the end of the day, you might actually be really surprised by how much progress you’re capable of making if you do your best and don’t give up.

In conclusion, I’ll leave you with a quote I recently heard by Jordan B. Peterson that I think fits perfectly with this conversation.

It was recently shared on his Facebook Page .

“Then, when you wake up in the middle of the night and the doubts crowd in, you have some defense: “For all my flaws, which are manifold, at least I am doing this. At least I am taking care of myself. At least I am of use to my family, and to the other people around me. At least I am moving, stumbling upward, under the load I have determined to carry.””

This is such a profound quote!

I hope you’ll take it to heart and understand that it actually matters.

You can do it.

I believe in you.

Now, it’s time to start writing about your future plans and turning those dreams into goals.

You’ve got this.

Best wishes…

In order to clearly communicate your life plans, take time to identify your passions and interests before you begin writing. Doing so, will make structuring the essay a lot easier.

Select three specific goals you wish to accomplish within a certain time period. Explain in the introduction of your essay why you selected those goals and how they are related to one another. Provide a brief and general explanation of how you will accomplish your goals.

Write one to two paragraphs specifically explaining each goal. Describe the rationale for each goal and how the idea originated. Mention individuals and personal experiences that inspired you to set these goals. Discuss how far or close you are to reaching each goal.

Include facts and research information about what it will take to reach each goal. Research should include the steps you need to take in order to accomplish your goal. Future Plan Essay: Writing Guide For Students

What does the future have in store for you? How do you plan for the future? What are your goals and aspirations? These are just some of the questions you have to ask yourself if you have to write a future plan essay. For most students, this assignment is something completely new. However, we can guarantee that you will most certainly have to write a future plan essay at some point in high school or college. But how do I write my future plan essay? Let’s find out!

What Is a Future Plan Essay?

What do I need to know or learn to write my future essay? Truth be told, you don’t need anything other than essay writing skills. In most cases, you have these already. This is probably not the first academic paper in your life, so don’t worry about it too much. To write a future goals essay, you just need to ask yourself a couple of basic questions. Keep in mind that this essay is about you. It’s not a technology in the future essay.

And remember, your paper should be interesting and original. You can’t just copy the goals of other people and use them in your future essay. Why? Because in most cases, your professor will check to see if your essay contains plagiarized content. You should be honest in your future planning essay. Of course, you need to write the essay in proper academic format. It is, after all, an academic paper.

Future Plan Essay Sample

After completion of my MSc in IT and Management in the US, my intention is to follow a career pathway that would engage my interest in the latest state of the art cutting-edge IT programs and appliances, allow me to use the knowledge that I have already gained, and assist the company or organization that I would be working for by being an excellent individual contributor and reliable and successful professional team member. If possible, I would also like a post which offers job security, long term career prospects, and the chance of promotion. I have already received one very promising offer which is taking up a civil service position in the Nigerian government, subject to my MSC. This would fulfil one of my ambitions which is to help serve my country. Also, if I have an MSc in IT and Management, it would allow me enter at a middle grade level where I could work hard and in time, diligently work my way through the ranks.

I could also become an independent consultant within the IT field as this is an area which is very much in demand, and it would give me the opportunity to work for a variety of companies with different systems and requirements that would broaden my experience. As I have a car, it would be feasible for me to drive within the city, or even travel to other locations and spend a week or more there in order to complete an assignment. There is an enormous appeal for me to be involved in the wide spectrum of work on offer in consulting, and I know that it would engage my interest in all thing IT, bolster my enthusiasm to learn even more about new applications, and empower my creativity.

Another more unusual route I could take would be to help orphans in Nigeria, as very sadly, there are now more than ever. They are in great need, particularly at this time of extreme violence and uprisings, and some do not have any relatives at all to take care of them. I have had the idea to help these unfortunate children ever since I was 17 and lost my father. So working in an orphanage would be very rewarding to me as I love children, and I can relate to the loss of a parent. I remember very well how difficult it was for my mother to raise me on her own, and know that some of the orphans have been put their by family members who cannot cope. A few years ago when volunteered to train juniors to help them with IT I was very successful, and feel that I could help to introduce the orphans to a computer and the way it works. As children are so quick at picking up IT, I think that I could really make a substantial difference to their lives by giving them one on one attention whenever possible, and giving them both physical and psychological support. This will be of great help to them later when they are older and will need to find a job in Nigeria’s touch marketplace.

Because Nigeria is one of the leading African countries it has to lead the way in IT, and take advantage of the latest innovations. In order to do that it desperately needs competent people to bring about an IT revolution that will help modernize so many different fields across the country, and thus transform the economy and improve social networks and personal needs. I aim to do all I can after graduating with my Masters to help bring about this much needed success in my country, whether it is helping orphans become the next generation of IT specialists, or working for a government department, or assisting the private and public sectors as an independent consultant.

Future Plans Essay: Graduate Personal Statement Writing Strategy

EssayEdge > Blog > Future Plans Essay: Graduate Personal Statement Writing Strategy

Writing about the future in a graduate personal statement can be an enjoyable task. Planning your career, thinking ahead to achieving your goals, and “dreaming big” are the best parts of writing about the future.

Graduate personal statements should always include some of the following components in a paragraph devoted to the future.

  • Forecast your short term and long term goals. (Include interim goals, if applicable.)
  • Define your future career, offering specific details.
  • Develop ideas and plans as to how the graduate degree will contribute to your future career.
  • Project industry growth, increased demand for employees. Relate it to your specific field.

Regarding goals, short term goals usually include those which can be achieved in the next 3 – 5 years. Long term goals extend beyond 10 years or more. Interim goals apply to some career paths, but not all. The interim goals fall between the short and long term goals outlined in the personal statement for graduate school and depend upon the industry or program.

Your graduate personal statement should relate your future plans to your motivation to achieve these plans. If you introduce the idea of your long term goal in the opening paragraph of a personal statement for graduate school, then it is usually a good idea to return to the idea at the conclusion of the statement. This will remind the reader of your theme, your introduction, and your desire to pursue a career in the field discussed in the graduate personal statement.

Graduate Personal Statements have Never been More Important

Another important part of the section on the future plans in graduate personal statements is the opportunity to focus on the application of the intended degree program to those plans.

The writer of a personal statement for graduate school should include information about desirable coursework in the program and professors of interest who teach those courses. If research is an element of the program, then a discussion of the research lab, its purpose, and the professors in charge of the lab, as well as any past relevant personal research experience , would be a good inclusion in this graduate personal statement.

A graduate personal statement could also benefit from some discussion of future alumni networking and community-building within the program. Potential synergistic relationships, whether in the medical, scientific, business, commercial, or artistic world, could benefit careers and should be noted in the graduate personal statement.

We hope that the answer to a question like,” Should I use a proofreading service for grad school ?” is obvious to you. The requirements for graduate-level papers are rigorous, but they let schools choose the most decent applicants. Future Plans [IELTS speaking]

Future Plans [IELTS speaking]

English grammar can be really confusing, but perhaps the most difficult part is talking about the future. In IELTS, we don’t often deal with future tenses, but you might be required to talk about your future plans in IELTS speaking , so it is worth knowing a little about how to use these.

In this lesson, I will explain to you how to talk about the future in an accurate and interesting way so that you can ace your IELTS test. 😁

ielts future plans

The Future Tenses

In English, we have 12 tenses. You can think of these in terms of time:

And then these are subdivided by perspective:

  • Perfect-continuous

This means that there are four future tenses:

  • Future simple
  • Future perfect
  • Future continuous
  • Future perfect-continuous

However, these are not all hugely important. We mostly use future simple and also present continuous. Yes, that’s right – present continuous. English can be so confusing…

The present continuous is formed with “to be” and then the present participle. For example:

  • I am going…
  • She is doing
  • We are going…

If you want a full lesson about the future tenses, you can go here . You might also like this video:

Talking about Future Plans: IELTS Speaking

In part one of the IELTS speaking test, you might be asked about future plans. These will be quite general and you don’t really need to say much in response.

Here is an example:

Q: What job would you like to do in the future? A: I would love to be a photographer. Right now it is just my hobby but I am taking a course and hopefully one day I can make it my full-time job.

So which of the future tenses did I use here…?

None! 😅

It’s strange, right? I have given a very good answer but I have not used any of our previously mentioned tenses. Instead, I have used modal verbs to show possibility .

The terms “would like/love to…” and “hopefully I can…” are really useful for talking about the future in IELTS. This is because we don’t actually know what will happen in the future. If I said, “I will be a photographer,” it is not guaranteed and so it is not a perfect answer.

Let’s see some more examples with those phrases:

  • I would like to open my own clothes store.
  • Hopefully I can find a job working for a charity.
  • I would love to do something that involves helping animals.
  • Hopefully I can gain the necessary qualifications to do that.

Speaking Part 2: Future Plans

Here is a sample cue card for IELTS speaking part two:

Describe a future plan which is not related to work or study. You should say – what the plan is – when you thought of the plan – who is involved in the plan And say how you think you will achieve the plan.

To answer this, you should first note the important part: This must be a future plan but it must not relate to work or study. This is a key part to note. Most of the obvious answers to this would involve work or study, so you have to think quickly to find something else to talk about.

For me, the plan would be travel because I love going to different places. I would think of a trip that I want to take, then imagine how I would describe it, and I would attempt to talk about those bullet points while doing so.

Sample Answer

Because of the current coronavirus situation, few people are able to travel. For me, this is a strange sensation. I usually travel every summer and winter, and so it feels a little strange to stay in the same place for so long. As such, I am planning a trip for when the pandemic ends.

This trip involves going down through Southeast Asia to Australia, then exploring that country for a few weeks before visiting New Zealand. I would love to go there and see the wildlife, especially the whales that live in the seas around the country. Hopefully I could manage to spend a few weeks there, too, staying in hostels, visiting friends, and travelling cheaply around the countryside. I think it would be a pretty amazing holiday.

I first thought of this plan a few years ago but of course it was just a loose idea that I put off for a long time. Now that the world has changed, I don’t often think about travel. It’s just too much of a temptation and the fact that it is impossible makes it a bit of a tease.

This plan would basically just involve me backpacking freely for a couple of months, so no one else would be involved, but I do hope to drop in on some friends that live “ down under .” I’ll rely on them for hosting me and showing me around every now and then, but apart from that it will just be me on the road. It requires a lot of planning, courage, and saving, but I’m used to all of these things.

Look at the language I have used here. Did I often use future tenses? Not really, but I did sometimes. For example, I said “I’ll rely on them…” This is a contraction of “I will rely on them…”

Notice that when talking about my future plans, I said, “I am planning a trip…” This is what I meant by present continuous. It’s a great tense for talking about things that we really hope to do in future.

I also repeated my language from earlier: “I would love to go there…” Again, the inclusion of “would” means this is a hypothetical situation. It’s like saying “If I had the time and money then…”

I used similar language here: “Hopefully I could manage to spend a few weeks…” Again, this shows a lack of certainty, which is fine because we are talking about something that is impossible to know for sure.

Finally, I said, “I do hope to drop in on some friends…” When we use “I hope to…” it tells us that it is about the future and that it is also quite speculative. This sort of language tells the examiner that you have a good mastery of grammar, allowing you to talk about the future in very careful ways.

my future career free essay example

My future career essay

“Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated with superheroes. The idea that with some power, I can fight crime and help the people around me never failed to amaze me. As I grew older, the passion to be a superhero grew more assertive as well. It was not long after that I realized that superheroes did exist, just not in the same way I thought. They could not fly or become invisible but instead worked hard and helped people. They are known as police officers. As a teenager, my superheroes now wore blue uniforms and a badge.

Most of us live our lives without having hardly made an impact in this world. I do not want that to the case with me; I want to help people whenever I can. I have realized that the best route for doing so is to become a law enforcement member. A police officer is a person that puts other safety and well-being above their own. They will rush into a dangerous situation to help the innocent and are the living embodiment of my childhood dreams. From my perspective, it is a noble profession and would allow me to do my part in making this world safer by serving my community.

I have grown up with the ideals of helping my community and becoming a police officer. It allowed me to understand the intricacies of the job as best as I could. I have a strong sense of justice and do not waiver on morals ever. Even when it has gotten me grounded, I have told the truth. I also work at many shelters to understand the issues people face and try to do my part even now. I also try to keep updated with the most common and relevant laws and any changes in them. In addition to this, I have been taking self-defense classes for two years now. These classes have enabled me to be skillful enough to protect myself and others in case of any altercations.

Like any career in the world, being a police officer has its ups and downs too. It is not an easy career but requires a significant amount of time, effort, and sacrifice. I am willing to put in the work so I can help keep my community safe. I plan to climb the career ladder from patrol officer to detective to even the chief of a district or state. Law enforcement is not without its flaws, and I hope to transform these cons into pros one day. I want my influence to better not only the community but also the police department as well.

After I graduate high school, I want to enroll in a police academy to start my training right away. The sooner I join, the sooner I can start making a positive impact. I am eager to wear the blue uniform and be the superhero I looked up to as a child.”

10-Year Life Plan Essay

Educational plan, lifestyle plan, works cited.

Planning ten years of my life seems like a kind of challenge now. We can’t predict what will happen to us after several months. However, I believe that great success is impossible without personal motivation and clearly defined goals. Thus, my life plan essay should start with a clear objective.

In ten years, I want to own an event company that can be the best in its field. I have always been fascinated with this idea. The following 10-year life plan essay will consist of three parts that can help me structure my future and achieve all my goals.

I would like to organize great performances at different events every day. Can you imagine a holiday that never ends? And this will be my work. I will make people happier. Now I need to plan all the steps to help me achieve my dream.

The first step of the way of my goal’s achievement is education. My education will be done at the University of Nevada, where I am planning to study hospitality management as a major and event management as a minor. I am sure of the importance of hard study for my future work. I need to get at least a 3.5 GPA. The multiple locations can help me gain a diversified background and extend my knowledge.

Therefore, I want to do some internship while studying. Perhaps, I will visit different countries to explore the modern tendencies of business start and its future development. Swope says: “I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: “Try to please everybody” (Swope).

Therefore, I am planning to get experience in different fields because I am sure of their future importance for my business. The examples of some international companies can help me understand how to make my business prosper. To extend my experience, I will start my practice during the study.

I think that education is very important. The lack of knowledge can lead to the business’s incapacity and collapse. Today, the diploma plays a significant role. It gives an appropriate status and respect. A man with a diploma looks more confident and, of course, qualified.

Accreditation provides much more opportunities in life. Therefore, I am planning to study hard and get as much knowledge as possible. I am sure that the university I chose can help me achieve my goals. My education will give me the base for my future business.

It is the most important part of the life plan, which should clarify the goal and approaches to its achievement. Nowadays, the leaders of all companies know the value of settings achievable and understandable goals. Such issues are called smart goals, which need to get better results. These smart ideas help me share my vision of the business with the possible assistants (“Life Planning”).

My attention is turned to the use of certain tools that may help my project. For instance, I need to identify and list all the barriers that may be between me and my goal. I shouldn’t be scared of possible problems because it is an integral part of my future success. Being realistic, I realize all the difficulties I should overcome.

In the beginning, I have to clarify who will be involved in my business. This can be a family company, or I can cooperate with a wide circle of partners. What results do I want to achieve? I want to own a successful company that will be famous around the country.

Choosing the place location, I prefer my native city because it will be easier to find clients and partners. Thinking about these questions, I can clearly understand all the important keys to my goal’s achievement. I will get so many opportunities, so I shouldn’t be lazy in its use (Ashton 8). This is why I think it is the most important period of my life.

My lifestyle should accomplish my educational and professional background and skills. I am planning to do a huge social work and to promote equality among people. I want to help everyone that I can. But I have to learn more from the closest one.

My business will be closely related to people from different communities. Therefore, matching my wants, I should be ready to keep my mind open to different cultural issues and views. I plan to visit many countries to learn about cultural features. This will help in my work with clients.

According to Bukofsky, even my religious and spiritual conditions are very important for my business (34). Family relations also play a huge role in the business success achievement. Life planning is a process that may lead a person to take a more active role and to think about the future. Thinking about my future, I imagine a family that will support me and give me more motivation.

I totally agree with Carlson that “self-actualization is the key to self-help” (9). Although no one can control all life’s events, it is better to try being over random chance and fate.

There is a difference between the person who goes to one’s goal and the man who can easily be influenced by random events. I will structure my life according to the daily plan. This will allow me to follow the main idea, which will lead to success. The life plan is a perfect method to figure out what is really important in life.

I have so many ideas and interests in different fields. I am fascinated by people who can concentrate on the most important idea and follow the plan. However, I should follow my own life plan for the future result. I agree with the statement of Barnett that people should discipline themselves. Following the main idea of life, it is possible to get better results and to make it fast (Barnett).

I have always been a goal-setter. Thereby, my Ten Year Plan is focused on achieving my high ideals and realistic goals. From time to time, it seems that goals are something that we strive to achieve but fail due to personal reasons or social barriers.

However, I am completely sure that a good life plan and motivation can lead to success in spite of all problems that may occur. My Ten Year Life Plan helps me to specify my goals and to see the key moments and the most important steps which can lead me to success.

Passion is important for scholarship administrators, and if you’re able to articulate your enthusiasm for a specific career path , it will show that you’re determined to meet the requirements to reach that goal. The most specific and well-thought-out your essay is, the easier it will be for a reader to understand your devotion and commitment to the program and the field it will allow you to enter.

Learn how the scholarship will help you. Having a firm grasp of your career goals is great, but it’s equally important that you express exactly how the specific program relates to those goals. This shows that you’ve researched the merits of the program and understand exactly how it fits into your professional goals.

Show you’ve considered your future. This goes along with the first two points — show that you know how to set goals and consider the path toward achieving those goals, and you’ll have an easier time convincing the reader that you’ll know how to set goals while participating in the program. They’ll see that you know how to prioritize education because you have a clear vision for navigating your career path.

While some scholarships might come right out and simply ask, “What are your career goals?” most will rework the question into something different that still accomplishes the same goal.

Below are some examples of career goals essay prompts that a scholarship program could pose to its applicants:

Discuss your career goals. Many scholarships prefer the most direct approach when giving an essay prompt to their applicants. This type of question gives the candidate a lot of wiggle room to discuss their passions, motivations, and career goals.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years ? This question is often used as a prompt for a career goals essay because it gives the applicant a timeline to describe their aspirations. It forces them to be realistic about where their career will be and how they will accomplish this within the next ten years.

How will this scholarship contribute to your professional success? A scholarship committee wants to be sure that the money they’re giving will contribute to a student’s overall professional success. This question asks about the applicant’s game plan in the long-term and evaluates how this program is going to assist in their future.

What is your dream job ? Since a dream job is often categorized as a person’s career goals, this is a common question phrasing in scholarship essays. Asking about a candidate’s dream job answers whether this program aligns with the student’s long-term career goals.

What matters most to you and why? Sometimes, a scholarship essay prompt won’t ask about your career or future at all. Instead, they’ll ask a question like this that assesses your motivations , values, and character.

Use these examples of career goals essays for scholarships to help write your own. Pay special attention to how they’re organized, rather than the content, to inspire your own career goals essay:

Career goals essay example 1 – Discuss your career goals

When I was six years old, I was riding bikes with my older sister around our neighborhood. She had just taught me how to ride, and I was excited to have to freedom to explore with her. When she was rounding a particularly difficult bend to see around, a car happened to be coming along at the same time. It struck her. That bike ride changed our lives forever. Over the next year, I went with my sister every Tuesday and Thursday to her physical therapist ’s appointments to help her regain walking strength. Watching her physical therapist patiently assist my sister back to becoming herself awoken something in me. A passion for helping others in the same way eventually turned into a career goal of becoming a physical therapist myself. I decided to get my bachelor’s degree in exercise science. After graduating in 2019, I knew that the next step for me was to attend a graduate program in physical therapy. I was accepted to Lassell University Master of Science in Rehabilitation Services. This presented me with my latest goal along my career path, and I’m eagerly waiting to start. This scholarship would help me afford the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Lassell University class of 2023, allowing me to continue working towards my ultimate career goal of becoming a physical therapist and helping others to become themselves again.

Career goals essay example 2 – Where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I will have been successfully running my own construction business for about five years. I’m currently a second-year student at the University of Texas, pursuing a master’s degree in business administration. I decided to get my MBA because I knew it would be a positive asset toward my long-term career goal of owning a construction business. In my high school years, I worked as a construction apprentice for a local business. I loved many aspects of the business, such as building something from nothing. I knew that I wanted to incorporate this work into my long-term career, but I didn’t want to work as an apprentice . This led me to pursue business. In ten years and with the help of this scholarship, I will have graduated with my MBA almost a decade prior . After graduation, I plan to take a business administration internship with a carpentry business to help myself get a footing in the field. After about two years of this, I will have started my own construction business.

Career goals essay example 3 – What matters most to you and why?

The people I surround myself with matter most to me. Whether it be my relatives, friends, or professional acquaintances, I always care the most about the happiness of the people around me. Making the people around me happy matters the most to me because I truly because we find our happiness through others. I believe that this drive to make a positive impression on the people around me is what drove me towards a career as a nurse . I always thought of hospitals as places where people need someone to support them and make their day a little happier. I wanted to be one of those who spend their careers positively impacting people in need. This scholarship will enable me to finally afford nursing school and go after my dream job full force.

Career goals essay example 4 – What are your short- and long-term career goals, and how will earning this degree contribute to achieving those goals? Please provide a minimum of 200 words.

My short-term career goals involve working directly with underprivileged young people to increase the literacy rate in my community. As a student of an underfunded and understaffed school, I’ve seen firsthand how much of an impact early literacy education makes on long-term achievement. It broke my heart to see my peers embarrassed at their struggle with reading at an advanced age, and this shame added another dimension to their lack of opportunity. Being a literacy educator for young people would allow me to serve this community directly to show them not only the necessity of strong written communication skills, but the joy of reading for pleasure. This program focuses specifically on early literacy, and would provide me a direct route to a career in serving the community I hope to serve. As for long-term career goals, I hope to one day create a program where socioeconomically parents can bring their children for literacy education, not only to increase their ability to navigate the world of language, but also to instill confidence and joy in the written word. What drew me to this program was that it also has administrative, legal, and business dimensions that would set me on the path toward achieving this goal.

Here are some tips to keep in mind for writing a career goals scholarship essay:

Write about goals relevant to the scholarship. Although you may have many different kinds of goals for your personal and professional future, a scholarship essay only discusses objectives that are relevant to the program you’re applying for.

Be honest. Applying for a scholarship is stressful because the applicant’s education is usually reliant on receiving these funds in one way or another. Even though it’s tempting to exaggerate your skills or pretend you’re more passionate about something than you are to make yourself a more competitive applicant, it’s a bad move.

Use your own, unique voice. The essay portion of a scholarship application is your chance to stand out by using your voice. Nobody else, regardless of their academic or professional achievements, is you. Make this clear in your career goals scholarship essay by keeping your unique written voice engrained in the words you produce.

Be specific. A big reason that scholarship committees ask applicants to write a career goals essay is to determine how prepared they are in planning their long-term professional goals. They aren’t interested in providing a scholarship to students who aren’t going to follow through with their career plans.

Explain long and short-term goals . Even if the essay prompt asks you to describe where you see yourself in ten years, you still need to tell them the steps leading towards this picture of success.

Include the short-term goals that add up to your larger career objectives in your essay response. Explain how accomplishing the smaller goals gives you an advantage when tackling long-term ones.

Explain how the program and scholarship will help you. Before writing your career goals essay, consider how this program and scholarship will help you in your career. The answer to this question is essential.

Follow the essay formatting guidelines. This may sound obvious, but it’s surprisingly easy to forget this step when your essay is finally flowing and when you’re scrambling to get it submitted on time.

Check, double-check , and triple-check the essay guidelines for content, word count, and formatting requirements. If you miss any of these steps, your essay may be immediately disqualified no matter how good it or the rest of your application is.

Many times career goals essays are written by students who have already completed at least some college or are applying to a post-graduate program and need more money to continue.

There’s a good chance that your career goals have changed since you started or graduated college. For example, say you wanted to be an engineer , so you got your undergraduate degree in engineering but realized you didn’t like it after working in the industry for a few years.

You decided that nursing would be more up your alley, and now you’re applying for a scholarship for a nursing program. While this isn’t unusual, it can make it more difficult to write a career goals essay since your past work doesn’t necessarily match your future goals.

In this case, you’ll simply need to explain why you changed your career path and why this next one is the best choice for you. Share your decision-making process to show that you haven’t taken the switch lightly, and talk about what you’ve already done to try to pursue this path.

How do you write a career goal for a scholarship essay?

You write a career goal for a scholarship essay by sharing your passion, explaining both your long- and short-term goals, and relating your goals to the scholarship.

Explain why you want to pursue the career you’re pursuing, where you hope to be in the future and how you plan to get there, and how the scholarship will help you do this.

How do you describe your career goals in an essay?

You describe your career goals in an essay by explaining what you want to do in your career, why you decided on this career path, and what you’ve done so far to make that a reality.

You can usually work these factors into any prompt you receive, so think through them before you start writing so that you can use them as an outline of sorts.

What are career goals examples?

Examples of career goals include:

Working as a grant writer for a nonprofit organization.

Becoming a department manager and eventually an executive in your field.

Owning your own plumbing company.

Caring for underserved communities as a nurse practitioner .

What are some goals for success?

Some goals for success include growing in your role, building your network, and finding joy in the job. Most careers don’t just happen overnight and require you to set the right milestones that work best for you. Not everyone will have the same goals for success.

How do you start a career goals essay for a scholarship?

You can start a career goals essay for a scholarship by directly answering the prompt. Most scholarship prompts include a word count of between 200 and 500 words, so it’s essential that you immediately respond to the prompt. Attention-grabbing sentences and narratives can be helpful for setting the scene, but an efficient and direct answer will show a clarity of mind that helps enhance the quality of your answer.

As the name suggests, a career goals essay is a personal document that outlines your professional plans.

It describes your educational and work history, and your ambitions for the future.

A career goals essay is generally used in three situations:

  • When applying to a school or college
  • When applying for a scholarship to fund education
  • When applying for a new job

It allows the reader to better understand your personality and fully appreciate why you are making the application.

Career goals essays help admissions staff and hiring managers to select the ideal candidates for a position.

What Should a Career Goals Essay Contain?

A little backstory.

This essay is an opportunity for you to allow your personality and experiences to shine, so avoid generic statements.

The document should be personal and concisely describe your life experiences.

You should explain why you have chosen this career path.

If there was a pivotal moment in your life that led you to this application, be sure to highlight it.

Outline Your Goals

The main focus of the essay should be your goals for the future.

Readers want to see that you are ambitious and driven, with a genuine passion for the role or course you are applying for.

These career goals should be split into your short-term goals (looking over the next one to three years) and your long-term goals (which might look as far as 10 years into the future).

Show How This Application Will Help You Reach Your Goals

Critically, your career goals essay must show how this degree or job will help you achieve your goals .

If your long-term goal is to become a veterinary surgeon, studying a veterinary medicine program will obviously be essential.

However, your goal may be more nuanced than that. For example, you might want to become an expert in a particular piece of technology or software. Your application must show how your success in this role will enable you to become an industry leader.

This will also emphasize to the reader that you have done your research and understand the skills required for that particular sector.

You will have likely submitted a CV and covering letter at other points throughout the application process.

Remember, your career goals essay should complement these documents rather than repeat them.

This letter allows you to expand on the points mentioned in the earlier documents, aligning your previous experience with your goals for the future.

If you are writing a career goals essay as part of an application for a new job, be sure to refer back to the job description and person specification.

These documents highlight the exact type of individual the employer is searching for, so be sure your career goals essay matches the content in them.

Most career goals essays will be submitted via email, so an appropriate title is essential.

‘The Career Goals of [Name]’ isn’t a title that will make you stand out from the crowd.

Don’t forget, whether you are applying to a school or an employer, the reader will have the job of sifting through hundreds, if not thousands, of applications .

Where candidates have very similar experiences and education, their creativity and personality will be used to make the final decision.

Example titles:

How a Digital Marketing Degree Will Allow Me to Support Sustainable Businesses
How My Next Role in Nursing Will Help Me Help Others

How to Write a Career Goals Essay (with Examples)

An Introduction

Your introduction should set the theme for the essay, and crucially, outline your why .

Many candidates find the introduction the most challenging part of the essay to write. Therefore, it often makes the most sense to write it last.

Your introduction should be an honest and personable account of why you have chosen this field of study.

Starting with a generic opening paragraph will not inspire or motivate your reader. Stay away from phrases such as “I have wanted to be a lawyer ever since I was a little girl.”

This sentence tells the reader very little about your current aspirations.

It can also damage your integrity, as we all know most small children dream of being a movie star or astronaut before the job of lawyer ever springs to mind.

Example introduction:

Most individuals in the US are lucky enough to never need the law to protect them. However, many fail to see how the intricate details of the constitution support their life every day. I have a particular fascination with criminal law after being introduced to the field by a family friend. The monumental impact a lawyer can have on the life and welfare of an individual truly astounded me, and I have spent the years since investigating the effects of the American legal system. This is why I have tailored my education so far to prepare me for a legal career. I work every day on developing my research and analytical ability, and now feel ready to dedicate myself fully to the legal field.

School-Specific Content

Admissions staff, tutors and hiring managers want to know that their applicants have done their research.

You can show them that you have done yours by adding a small paragraph straight after your introduction showing why you chose this school to study at or this company to work for.

First example of school-specific content:

[Insert company name] has an incredible global reputation, with clients in every continent. I can see that staff retention rates are incredibly high, indicating strong career opportunities and the prospect of continuous development. The company values show that diversity and integrity are of the utmost importance, and I would love the opportunity to work for an organization whose principles align with my own.

Second example of school-specific content:

[Insert school name] is well known for producing the highest caliber of graduates, with an excellent global reputation. The school leaderboards show that the grades from [insert school name] ranked within the top five in the country for the past 10 years. I would be proud to associate myself with an establishment that holds itself in such high regard and am thrilled at the prospect of learning alongside the best.

Your Long-term Vision

Remember, it is crucial you show why and how you are actively working towards these goals. For example, merely stating, 'My long-term goal is to become a lawyer with my own practice’ is worthless.

The reader wants to see how this goal aligns with your personality and why you have chosen this route.

The goals set out in this essay should be precise and meaningful .

Example of long-term vision:

Law is an area of study that affects us all. The law protects us, and I am fascinated by its impact on both an individual and global scale. Of course, I want to graduate with a top-class degree, but I am also passionate about the connections and network I will build along the way. My goal is to open my own practice one day, specializing in family law. At the moment, I volunteer in my local practice, gaining experience and building a network that will help me later in my career. I believe the combination of world-class education and hands-on legal experience will help me to achieve this ambitious long-term goal.

Your Short-term Vision

Next, it is crucial to discuss your short-term goals .

If you're applying to school, your short-term goals will explain what you aim to achieve throughout the degree or program.

For a job application, these goals will outline your targets for your first year in the role.

Example of short-term vision:

In the short term, my goal is to build a network in the legal sector. I have already begun doing this through my weekly volunteering role. However, this degree will undoubtedly allow me to meet a much broader spectrum of people. I am excited to curate this network with a range of legal specialists, from students at the start of their careers to tutors with many years of experience in the industry.

The Conclusion

As with any essay, your conclusion should summarize what you have discussed throughout.

You should not throw in any new ideas, subjects or theories at this point. Otherwise, it indicates to the reader that you have not cohesively written the essay.

Your conclusion should be about the same length as the introduction, mentioning your final goals and the name of the establishment you are applying to.

You must outline again why you want to work for this company or study at this school. Using a statistic or fact will show that you have conducted thorough research.

Example conclusion:

I am immensely excited to begin my experience with [insert school name]. Ultimately, this education will allow me to fulfill my dreams of becoming a lawyer and one day opening my own practice. I will bring hard work, determination and enthusiasm to the law school, never forgetting why I began this journey.

Vague or Weak Statements

Every sentence in your essay should be specific to you.

For example, statements such as ‘I want to study medicine because it will allow me to get a good job’ does not show the reader that you are passionate or enthusiastic about this position.

Discussing Financial Remuneration

Whether the essay is aimed at a prospective employer or a college admissions office, they want to see why you want the position personally.

Someone solely focused on the financial rewards will likely not have longevity in the career.

Controversial Topics

Of course, there will be times where politics and current affairs are relevant to the discussion.

However, showing a one-sided argument that doesn’t align with the readers can alienate your application before you even begin.

A career goals essay is an opportunity for your personality to shine through. It isn’t a test of who has the best grades or the most experience , but a chance to show how this job or degree can change your life.

Although the reader is excited to hear about your goals, they are more interested in how this role links to your ambitions.

Be sure to constantly reflect upon how obtaining a place on this course, or securing the job role, is intrinsically linked to your goals.

A word limit is often applied to career goal essays. Where there is no limit, be sure to write no more than 1,000 words.

This piece should be concise and to the point, showing the reader you can effectively convey your thoughts and ideas.

Interview questions answered: What are your future plans?

‘If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans’. Woody Allen was right, as the history has proven countless times. We can plan and dream and hope, yet we never have things completely under our control . A pandemic starts, or we get sick, or something positive happens–such as falling in love with a stranger, and suddenly we have to change our plans, or want to change them.

But what does it mean for your job interview? Should you philosophize about uncertainty of life , or should you come up with a precise and concrete answer , explaining what you want do in six month, three years, and ten years from now? You can actually succeed with both approaches to the question , as long as you explain your reasoning. As a rule of a thumb, however, you should try to connect your future plans with their company. This can mean internal promotion , but also having the same job for a foreseeable future, when there are no obvious career growth opportunities.

Let’s have a look at 7 sample answers to this interesting interview question. I tried to include in my selection answers for a variety of situations and jobs, including jobs nobody wants to have for longer than six months, as well as a couple of unconventional answers (philosophizing about vanity of planning in the uncertain world we live in), and also one answer that focuses primarily on goals and plans outside of work, and one answer for students (applying for a place in a study program instead of for a job). Go through them, think for a few seconds about each one, and pick one that resonates with you, and with the message you try to convey to the hiring managers.

7 sample answers to “What are your future plans?” interview question

  • To be honest, I do not have any big plans . I would enjoy working as a receptionist in a nice hotel with a great management, just like this one. My future plans are having a job I enjoy doing , finding good life-work balance, foster good relationships both at work and in my personal life, and simply enjoy every day as it comes and goes. Of course, I plan to continue working on my language skills , because I want to become better in my work. But when it comes to the job, I do not dream of changing my career, or of anything similar.
  • My future plans can be summed up in one sentence: to make a great career in this international corporation . Of course, I have some positions on my mind. A finance manager, later perhaps an FP&A director. As you can see I dare do dream big . At the same time, however, I realize I have to start here as an entry level financial analyst , learn the ins and outs of the job, prove my skills and dedication to work, and just then I can think of promotion and better jobs.
  • My future plans are yet to be decided . I am still young, and trying to find my calling . It is one of the reasons why I apply for a job with your company –because it is very big, you have many departments, offices overseas, and I feel that options are almost endless here, of course as long as you try hard and do not mind sacrificing something for your job . What exactly I will do, however, and where I will end up living, I cannot tell now. But I am excited about the future , and without a doubt I will come up with some tangible plans down the road.
  • Speaking honestly, I prefer to live in a present moment . Plans? God, I had many. You would not believe if I told you. But sometimes I wasn’t ready to pursue them , other times destiny stepped into my way . I learned the hard way that regardless of how hard we try, we never have things fully under our control. And it doesn’t matter whether we talk about personal life, or professional career. Future plans? They only bring me anxiety . Hence for the last few years I prefer living in the moment, focusing on the task at hand, and going with the flow . At the moment I try to get a job with your retail store . With my year of birth, however, no interview is easy anymore. I did what I could to prepare for this meeting. If I get the job, I will do my best every day, and let’s see what’s next. Living in the present is liberating .
  • I plan to start a family in five years time . It is my biggest dream as a woman–to have kids, and to be a good mother. Of course, we never know what the future will bring , and you need two people for starting a family. But this is my plan for the future, and I will try my best to pursue it. Speaking about my professional career , I’d be happy to work as a secretary until then, and then return back after maternity leave… Is there anything else you’d like to know about my future goals and plans?
  • I do not have any future plans . Had some in the past, things haven’t worked out, and I only ended up disappointed. In my opinion, when we fixate on something in the future –some object of our desire, be it another person, a job, or a nice thing we want to buy, such as a new house, our job and daily life becomes just a means to an end . We go to work and around our daily business just to achieve X and Y in the future. And that’s a recipe to depression and unhappiness. Why should we rob ourselves of the most precious thing we have–the present moment? I also learned that when we take care of the present, the future will take care of itself . What I try to convey here is that if I focus 100% on the task at hand, and do it well, and then repeat it again and again, there’s no doubt I will progress in my career . And that’s exactly what I try to do, and my way of living.
  • My future plan is to become a great nurse . It is something I have been dreaming of for years. Now I am just applying for a place at a nursing school, and I know I have a long road ahead of me. But I see the meaningful purpose in this job , know what I want to achieve in life, and I hope it will drive me forward in my studies, and help me overcome the challenges I will undoubtedly face while trying to earn my degree.

Show some excitement for the future, or for the present

Regardless of whether you opt for conventional approach, or philosophize about the vanity of planing in the 21st century, they should hear some excitement in your voice . And it doesn’t matter what job you are applying for, and how far it is from your “dream career”.

Of course, the main reason why we go to work is the need to earn money to live . That’s how it works in life, and it likely won’t be any otherwise in the future. If you want to avoid sleeping on the street , you have to create some value for others (in your job, or in your business)–unless you were born in a golden cage, but you probably wouldn’t be reading this article in such a case…

The point I try to convey here is that employers do not want to hire pessimistic and bitter employees , who do not see anything positive about their future. Show some excitement for what’s ahead , your job with them, good things awaiting you in your life outside of work, and so on.

what is your future plan essay

Make sure to have realistic future plans

Anything is possible and we can dream big, but you should try to keep it realistic in your interviews . For sure you can become a CEO of Tesla or General Electric one day. But it perhaps isn’t the best idea talking about such plans while you apply for an entry level role in these companies, or for a kitchen helper job at McDonald’s. It is just too farfetched.

Think about a position you can realistically have in a year, three years, five years, ideally within their organization, and focus on it while narrating your future plans. And if you are not sure, you can always opt for answer no. 4 or no. 6 on my list, focusing on present, and explaining why you prefer to do so .

Ready to answer this question? I hope so! Do not forget to check also sample answers to other tricky interview questions:

Talk about your future plan

You should say:

  • What is your future plan?
  • When did you think of your plan?
  • How long will it last?
  • Who will be involved in your plan?

Sample answer:

Travelling is one of my hobbies. Without travelling, I find my life dull and monotonous. That’s why I always travel on vacation, usually in winter and summer. I like exploring different places, trying new cuisines and meeting new people.

Thailand is my favourite destination. I first thought of visiting Thailand three years ago. However, I put off the plan for a long time because of the pandemic.

I am planning a 5-day trip to Thailand next summer. I’m working my fingers to the bone. Besides, I save money for the trip by hardly hanging out with friends at the coffee shop or shopping online.

Now, I have selected some hotels and homestays that meet my expectations. They are near the beach, with a large indoor pool and restaurants serving traditional food.

Some like travelling with friends or their families, but I prefer to travel alone. The first place I must visit is Phuket’s beach which is famous for its beauty and the hustle and bustle.

On the second day, I plan to stroll through the street of Phuket Town, enjoy some local food and visit some museums and temples.

For the rest of the trip, I’m going to participate in some outdoor activities, such as diving and snorkeling.

I’m looking forward to the trip. It will help me escape from the daily stress and have a good rest.

How to Write your Future Plan (9 Steps with Templates)

I remember when I was in high school when writing a future plan was introduced. I had a lot of fun making my future plan and got me wondering where I really want to be in life. Truth be told, writing your future plan is one of the most important skills you need to develop. If you want a bright future ahead, then you should know how to plan your future. But if you are just here to finish your assignment, then I still got you covered. I have listed 9 easy steps for you to make your future plan.

Here are the steps on how do you write your future plan.

  • Have a Quiet Time and Reflect
  • Write Down your Goals and Dreams
  • Write Down Where Do You See Yourself in the Future
  • Write Down How Are You Going To Achieve These Goals
  • Identify Your Ultimate Goal
  • Write and Explain Your Ultimate Goal As Your Introduction
  • Write Down Your Other Goals on the Next Paragraphs
  • Conclude Your Goals at the End
  • Proofread To Check for Mistakes

If you are not a student, then it doesn’t matter. As I said, planning for your future is one of the most important skills you need to get in order to achieve big.

Truth is, my future plan when I was in High school was actually different from what I am right now. Is it better? I don’t know. I just know that we change.

But the future plan I’ve developed when I was in my quarter-life crisis became the most important thing I did to change my life. Without the future plan, I’ve made that day, you won’t be in here to read this article. So here, I am going to teach you how to write an effective future plan.

Just follow these steps and I promise you that after you make your future plan, you will have a deeper understanding of yourself. By doing this, you can plan for a successful future.

what is your future plan essay

1. Have a Quiet Time and Reflect

The first step in writing your future plan is to first find a quiet place and do self-reflection. Our absolute goal in doing self-reflection is to be focused on knowing what we really want to achieve. This boosts not just the quality of work, but will also save us time.

Before starting to write your future plan, it is recommended to have a quiet time. The reason for having a quiet time is to have a focus on self-reflection.

Writing our future plan means that we are asking ourselves what we really want to do in the future. To do that, we first need enough quiet time and concentration to really ask ourselves what we want to do.

The reason is simple.

We need absolute focus in order for us to know all the things we need.

That means removing all distractions. Put your phone into silent or airplane mode. Have a quiet time by yourself.

It seems weird when I ask you to do this. But I promise you that by doing that, you will finish your future planning not just better, but also faster.

It is a big time saver and productivity booster.

The perfect time to write your future plan is to be in a self-reflection state or mode. If you are wondering how can you do that, then the simplest thing is to eliminate all distractions.

It will be hard to explain all of the steps to do it in this article, so here is another article where I discussed how can we do self-reflection. Here is the link: How to Develop your Self-Reflection Practice

2. Write Down Your Goals and Dreams

You need to write down all of the goals and dreams you can think of on a piece of paper, notebook, or on a computer. The reason is that we need to figure out all of our goals and dreams when we are writing a future plan.

Now, if you’ve followed step 1 and now have absolute focus, the remaining steps will be very easy.

The reason for this is that in order for us to write down all of our goals, we need to be focused on our tasks.

Aim to have 5 or more goals. The more, the longer your future plan would be.

We will be using all of these goals later.

Ask yourself, what are your dreams and goals in life. This is important as your future plan will greatly depend on your dreams.

It is close to impossible to write down a future plan if we don’t know where we want to go, and the where we want to go part is our goals and dreams.

3. Write Down Where Do You See Yourself in the Future

Write down where do you see yourself in the future. It can be where you want to be 5, 10, or even 15 years from now. In this step, imagination really helps and if you are following since step 1, this will also be a very easy step.

Writing down where you see yourself in the future is an important step to writing your future goals. You can’t write your future goals if you don’t know where do you really want to go. Thus, this step is important.

For some, because they’ve already set their goals and dreams, it is very easy to write this down. For example, if your goal is to be a lawyer, then you will see in the future that you are already a lawyer.

If your goal and dream is to be a writer, then you may see yourself in the future as someone writing in a quiet room.

In short, you may use the goals and dreams you’ve figured out in step 2 in order to find out where do you see yourself in the future.

Furthermore, if you have too many goals, this is where you’re going to see conflict in your goals. If that happens, find out what can you do to prevent conflict in your goals.

This is better because you’re going to find it out before even writing your future plan which is a lot harder to edit once you’re already done.

4. Write Down How Are You Going To Achieve These Goals

Write down what you would do to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself. In a future plan, you are also planning how are you going to achieve these goals and not just your goals. By doing this, it will be easier to write our goals into paragraphs in your future plan.

In future planning, it is important not just to know where you want to go, but also how are you going to reach that goal.

For example. If your goal is to be a doctor, then you’re going to plan it by going to medical school, then having an internship and residency.

We need to do this because we are going to include this in our future plan.

If you just want to make a future plan and you are not a student, you also need to do this step because we need to find out our plan to reach our goals.

5. Identify Your Ultimate Goal

The next step in making your future plan is to identify your ultimate goal. The importance of the ultimate goal is to find out what is the most important goal to you, or what is the product of all the goals you’ve listed. This will be important in the later steps.

If you are doing this because you just want to make a future plan, then this is the final step.

If you are a student, then do not stop because we are just halfway if you plan to submit your future plan essay to your teacher.

If you’re in the self-development journey, then this step is important because we need to find your ultimate reason.

What are the reasons for your goals? What is the ultimate reason? What is your ultimate goal?

Find that out.

For example, if my goal is this blog, then my ultimate goal is to make it first reach 500,000 views each month. That’s why one of my goals is to write 90 articles this quarter.

Your ultimate goal is very important as it will set the goals that are important to you and the goals that don’t need much attention as of now.

In this stage, you already have your goals, how to reach your goals, and your ultimate goals. Those are enough because you already know what you want to do in life.

If you want to really make an essay, then continue so. But this is the final step in the reflection phase.

For students, your ultimate goal is your first paragraph or your ultimate goal. That’s why I said that you also need this. Even if your goal is just to finish this essay, it is still needed.

6. Write and Explain Your Ultimate Goal As Your Introduction

Now that we have all that we need, it is time to write our future plan essay. Don’t worry since if you’ve followed everything until now, this will be extremely easy since I will give a template for you to follow.

It is very simple. Just follow this template in order for you to finish your first paragraph.

My name is (your name). I see myself (years) years into the future as (what is your ultimate goal) after achieving (state some of your goals). To achieve this, I plan to (state how you are going to achieve these goals).

Now, that’s a simple template of the first paragraph.

In the first paragraph, our goal is to actually let the person reading know about the main goal and how to reach that goal.

You need to be very concise and straight to the point in the first paragraph because we are going to explain further in the following paragraphs how we will achieve this goal.

7. Write Down Your Other Goals on the Next Paragraphs

After writing your first paragraph, it is time to write the next paragraphs. As I told you, we already have what it takes to finish it as easily as possible. That’s the reason why the first steps are very important.

In the following paragraphs, we are going to tell if we have a plan B, and we are also going to explain more about the goals we have that would eventually lead to our ultimate goal.

If you have a plan B, then use this template for paragraph 2.

I also want to achieve (your plan B). In order to achieve my other goal, I plan to (state how are you going to reach that goal). I know that I have all the capabilities to do this because (state your strengths or why you believe you can do it.)

If you don’t have a plan B and just want one ultimate goal and then use this template on all of the other goals you have that would lead to your ultimate goal.

One of my other goals is to (state your other goals). I plan to achieve them by (state how you plan to achieve them). The reason why I want to achieve this goal is because (state why you want this to happen in the future.)

Of course, this format is made for it to be easy. You can adjust the sentences to fit your personality. What’s important is that the information being asked for is included in your future plan. Furthermore, it is weird if all your paragraphs will follow the same format. Feel free to adjust some of it if needed since it would look more natural that way.

8. Conclude Your Goals at the End

The 2 most important parts of a future plan are the introduction and the last paragraph. In this paragraph, it is important to indicate that you are going to do your best to reach your goals.

It is important to indicate that you are dedicated and you want to finish this goal because this is the thing that you truly want to do in life.

It is also important to put your time frame and when are you planning to reach your goals.

Here is an example or template.

I am dedicated on doing everything I can for my future plans because these are my dreams. I will be able to do this after (when do you want to do this) since I know that (what are the reasons why you want to achieve your goal).

9. Proofread To Check for Mistakes

Now that you are done, it is important to check for grammar and spelling mistakes.

If you are still below the word count needed, then try to add more goals, or to explain more on how you are going to reach these goals.

One simple trick to easily check for mistakes is to read them aloud. The reason is that you can easily tell by reading if something is wrong with what you’ve written.

Proofread your future plan and then furnish the details. It’s now ready to be submitted and be proud of yourself for doing it yourself instead of copying others’ work.

Teachers know how to check for plagiarism. Trust me since I was a lecturer. I know how to check for plagiarism and if you just copied others’ work.

But if you did use the template and did your own twist, then it is impossible to see that as plagiarism since you have different goals and dreams from others.

Recommended Books

The next thing is books . Books are, for me, one of the cheapest ways to get invaluable information. We can learn personal development, finance, career, relationships, and many more from books.

Here, I will be listing my favorite books in different categories.

  • For Beginners – 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey – Personal development has a lot of concepts and ideas to learn. Thus it can be really hard for beginners to know where to start. Thus, I recommend this book since all the basic concepts of personal development are here( except finance, check what I recommended for that )
  • Productivity – The One Thing by Gary Keller – This book teaches us the power of focusing on one thing which is the ultimate source of productivity. The concepts taught are what I am using to constantly publish YouTube videos while maintaining this website.
  • Busy? – Make Time by Jack Knapp – This book teaches us how to make time for the things we love. The concept is really simple but I think that makes it a book worth reading.
  • Health – Lifespan by Dr.Sinclair – This Book teaches about the latest scientific research on lifespan. In his book, he has shared numerous things he is doing to slow down his aging process. This can be as easy as eating less which he recommends.
  • Finance – The Richest Man in Babylon by George Clason – Perhaps one of the first books I’ve read about Finance, this book for me is the best if we are talking about learning basic finance such as basic saving and investing. The concepts are very simple but effective.

Take this advice as a grain of salt.

I don’t recommend buying Audiobooks one by one. I mean, audiobooks can be quickly finished by listening while working out or doing some mindless tasks.

So here is to save you some money. Just go for a monthly subscription to Audible . I believe that you will save a lot of money with that plus, they usually give freebies to anyone starting.

My Audiobook Recommendation will always be the same as my book recommendations, but I personally like The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins . I like how she is so casual while reading her book.

The best answers to “What are your plans after graduation?”

Photo of Master Academia

If you are nearing the end of your degree, few questions are more annoying or nerve-wracking than “What are your plans after graduation?”. However, with a bit of preparation, you can offer a swift response , r egardless of whether you have any plans or not (yet).

Why “What are your plans after graduation?” is such a daunting question

Why you should prepare an answer to “what are your plans after graduation”, answers if you don’t know what you want to do after graduation, answers if you don’t have any concrete plans for after graduation, answers if you do have plans for after graduation but don’t want to talk about it.

Finishing a degree, regardless at what level, is hard work and time-consuming. If you find yourself in this position, the expectation to finish a degree and simultaneously figure out some of life’s biggest questions can be stressful.

The question “ What are your plans after graduation ?” triggers or increases stress, because it asks for certainty in an extremely uncertain time.

Many people who graduate will experience an unprecedented amount of change: Soon, they will close one chapter of their lives. Their daily activities will likely change considerably. Job applications are nerve-wracking, and many will move away from a familiar environment. On top of that, financial insecurities are common at this stage.

(So if you are curious about someone’s plans after graduation, ask this instead: “ How are you managing to finish your degree, and is there anything I can do to help ?” Soon-to-be graduates will start the conversation about their plan if they want to talk about it. If not, be kind and supportive, and don’t push them to reveal anything they may be uncomfortable with.)

If you are one of the lucky ones who have everything figured out before graduation: congratulations! If not, just know that this is completely normal and that you are not alone.

Regardless of your situation, you may want to have a snappy answer up your sleeve in the (almost inevitable case) someone asks you about your plans after graduation.

The best answers to “ What are your plans after graduation? ” are prepared in advance. Preparation allows you to consciously share an amount of information that you are comfortable with. Know that you are under no obligation to share your (lack of) plans after graduation with anyone.

Preparing an answer in advance will allow you to stay composed and in control. Furthermore, it will be easier for you to end the conversation if you are not up for it.

If you feel confused and anxious about your life after graduation, starting to ramble and trying to come up with a good answer on the spot will make you feel worse. Therefore, the following answer options and examples can help you to develop your perfect personal response!

Many soon-to-be-graduates do not know what they want to do after graduation, or they have a rough idea but no concrete plans set in motion. This is absolutely fine, and if you are one of them, you will find your way!

That said, if you have no idea what to do after graduation, the question “ What are your plans after graduation? ” can feel like a punch in the gut. However, you have several answer options at your disposal.

Keep it vague

If you don’t want to get into a lengthy conversation, one of the best strategies is to keep your answer vague. Furthermore, actively try and shift the conversation away from the topic.

Honesty can be a good way forward, too! Many people may remember how they felt when they graduated. So you may be surprised by the support and lack of judgement in case you open up.

Shift the conversation to your interests

Another way to answer is by displaying confidence, which conveys that it is okay that you don’t know what you will do yet. (Which is okay.) If you don’t make the impression that it is a problem, others will likely also not consider it a problem.

Talk about one option you may consider

When people ask about your plans after graduation, they look for facts and details. Especially if they are not familiar with your studies or discipline, they can have a hard time imagining the types of jobs you could do. One way to give them something concrete is to simply talk about one option that you may consider.

Many graduates have a rough idea of what they want to do after graduation. A postgraduate degree in particular is often started with a vision or career objective in mind. Putting this vision into reality, however, is a different story.

Sometimes, there is simply no time to apply for jobs while finishing a degree. Other times, many paths can lead to a certain career, and you haven’t selected one yet. Or maybe there were already some rejections from a ‘dream job’, and you have no interest in sharing this with the person who asks about your plans after graduation.

Explain different possibilities

A good way to answer “ What are your plans after graduation? ” is to explain the different possibilities that you have once you complete your degree. This satisfies the curiosity of the person who asked the question, while also protecting your process of figuring things out.

Talk about your ambitions

Maybe you find it hard to think ahead for a year or two, but you have a clear vision of what you want to do in the far future. There may be many ways to get there. So why focus on the nitty-gritty right in front of you, if you can share your ambition instead?

Explain that you will figure it out once you graduate

When someone asks for your plans after graduation, it can also be a good occasion to pat yourself on the back. Share how hard you worked, and that you do deserve some time after graduation to figure out what to do next. Because you do deserve it.

Say that you want to keep your plans a secret until they are confirmed

If you are really not up for a lengthy conversation about your future plans, simply state that you do not want to share anything until it is confirmed. Don’t worry if you have actually no pending job applications or anything like that. This is a totally accepted ‘white lie’ to protect yourself.

Even if you have concrete plans for after graduation, it can be annoying to be constantly asked what you will do. Especially if the people who ask are prone to judging your decisions, which can make you feel insecure. Therefore, it can be smart to set boundaries.

No one can force you to talk about anything you don’t want to. And at times it is better not to listen to others’ opinions about your future, but to just start with your chosen path after graduation.

Don’t reveal that you already made a decision

One way to avoid a lengthy conversation about your future plans is by not revealing your choice, and pretending that you are still considering your options. Again, this is an acceptable ‘white lie’ to protect yourself.

Tell the person to be patient

You can also decide to be mysterious, and leave the person asking about your future plans hanging. Once you start your new position or activity, people can obviously find out what you do. For instance, when you update your LinkedIn page. However, the conversations will be very different at this point: there is a smaller chance that people will question your choice. Instead, conversations will likely center around your new experiences .

Choosing the Right College Major for You

Explore careers.

Students often struggle with how to choose a major because they're just beginning to discover who they are. It's OK not to have an exact plan for college and a future career. You can start by choosing a major based on your current interests. Then, using your college experience to learn more about yourself, you can change it if you feel the need.

The major you choose will have an impact on the jobs you'll qualify for after graduation, so it's important to use your college experience to determine your long-term career interests. That way, you can pick a major that will help land you a job you love. Here are some key factors to consider so that you can choose the right major for you.

How to Choose a College Major

All students going to college will have to ask themselves, "What major should I choose?" Finding the answer to that question is a challenge. It boils down to identifying your passion. Studies show that students who enjoy what they’re learning perform better in their program of choice. If you choose a major because you’re influenced by others, you may not be as excited and motivated. Consider the advice of friends and family, but never forget that the final decision is yours.

Choosing Your Own Major

Choosing your own major motivates you to invest time and money into what you want to do with your life. Consider how much money an individual with that major typically makes, the current job outlook, and if you can see yourself being in that field for a long time. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics can help determine your projected salary and job outlook.

You Don’t Have to Select a Major Right Away

The good news is that there's no pressure to choose a major quickly. Most colleges don't require students to declare a major until the end of sophomore year. If you already have a specific academic track in mind, you can select a concentration as a first-year student or even before taking your first class. This gives you a chance to try major-specific classes earlier and change direction if necessary. You may also be able to take electives in the field you’re considering before declaring a major.

The Impact of Major Choice on College Acceptance

The major you choose can affect your chance of admission if the college only accepts a certain number of applicants into the program. You should research the programs available at each college to better understand their requirements and any restrictions they have on a particular major. If you choose a program that allows only a limited number of applicants, applying for early admission and considering multiple colleges may be helpful.

You can also ask the admissions rep at the college you would like to attend about any major programs the college is trying to grow. If you’re interested in any of these programs, selecting one could increase your chances of acceptance.

What Your Major Says About You

When you select a major, you're choosing a specialized field of study that will hopefully translate into a fulfilling career. Is it a major you think will benefit you when applying to jobs? Is it in a subject that would help you get to the place you want to go in life? Your major doesn't define everything about you, but it does help define a significant part of your life: your career.

Understand the Time Investment for School

As you advance through your college coursework, you'll experience new challenges that affect your time management. Challenges that could impact your daily schedule include newfound independence, final exams, and extracurricular activities. That's why it's important to understand the required time investment for your chosen major.

Study Obligations

Most undergraduate degrees take a minimum of four years to complete as a full-time student. However, if you plan to become a doctor or lawyer, you'll need to continue your education past an undergraduate degree. Becoming a doctor typically takes an additional four years of medical school and three or more years of residency. Becoming a lawyer will take about three years of law school past your undergraduate study. Before choosing a career, research which degrees you're required to obtain and how long they'll take you to complete.

All undergraduate majors require considerable effort on your part if you want to succeed. Handing in school work on time and studying is a big part of the effort. However, some majors require longer time commitments or have other requirements that must be met. Find out about everything you can about a major when making your choice so you know exactly what’s expected of you.

Improving Your Chances of Happiness After Graduation

Finding happiness after graduation depends on what your values are. If you choose a major that aligns well with your life values, you could improve your chances of enjoying life after college. If the major you choose leads you to a career that excites you, then there’s a good chance you’re on the track to happiness. There are other factors that affect happiness, but career choice is an important component of your life.

College is a time to develop skills for a successful, rewarding career. Reflect on what you are passionate about. Explore new interests as you venture through college life. You can always change your mind if you discover a new passion. And if you're wondering why you should go to college at all, try spending more time researching what majors are available that relate to your current interests.

How do I choose the right major?

Finding the right major can be a daunting task, but with some reflection and research, you can make an informed decision. Start by thinking about your interests and strengths because these can point you toward a major you'll enjoy. Research different majors and their requirements to see which ones align with your goals and aspirations. Don't be afraid to seek advice from academic advisers and professionals. They can provide valuable insights and guidance.

What does it mean to choose a major?

When you choose a major, you're picking an area of knowledge and expertise that'll shape your educational journey and potentially impact your future career. You’ll dive deep into a subject. You’ll complete coursework and gain the skills and knowledge needed to excel in that field.

Why should I choose a major?

Choosing a major is a crucial decision that can have a positive impact on your college experience and future career. It provides focus and specialization, allowing you to delve deep into a subject of interest, gain expertise, and prepare for your desired profession. Picking a major clarifies your long-term goals, connects you with valuable networks, and promotes personal growth and development. You’ll be required to select a major during your sophomore year if you haven’t already declared one by then.

How do I choose a major if I’m undecided?

If you're undecided about choosing a major, you're not alone. You may want to explore different fields through introductory courses and electives. Besides that, take advantage of resources and career exploration programs offered by your college. If you’re still undecided, you can gain practical experience through internships or job shadowing.

What support services does a college provide to help students choose a major?

Colleges typically provide various support services to assist students in choosing a major. These services include career counseling, academic advising, and resources to help students explore different fields of study. Career counseling and academic advising services offer guidance in assessing interests, skills, and values. In addition, these services provide information on potential career paths related to different majors.

What to know about the crisis of violence, politics and hunger engulfing Haiti

A woman carrying two bags of rice walks past burning tires

A long-simmering crisis over Haiti’s ability to govern itself, particularly after a series of natural disasters and an increasingly dire humanitarian emergency, has come to a head in the Caribbean nation, as its de facto president remains stranded in Puerto Rico and its people starve and live in fear of rampant violence.

The chaos engulfing the country has been bubbling for more than a year, only for it to spill over on the global stage on Monday night, as Haiti’s unpopular prime minister, Ariel Henry, agreed to resign once a transitional government is brokered by other Caribbean nations and parties, including the U.S.

But the very idea of a transitional government brokered not by Haitians but by outsiders is one of the main reasons Haiti, a nation of 11 million, is on the brink, according to humanitarian workers and residents who have called for Haitian-led solutions.

“What we’re seeing in Haiti has been building since the 2010 earthquake,” said Greg Beckett, an associate professor of anthropology at Western University in Canada.

Haitians take shelter in the Delmas 4 Olympic Boxing Arena

What is happening in Haiti and why?

In the power vacuum that followed the assassination of democratically elected President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, Henry, who was prime minister under Moïse, assumed power, with the support of several nations, including the U.S.

When Haiti failed to hold elections multiple times — Henry said it was due to logistical problems or violence — protests rang out against him. By the time Henry announced last year that elections would be postponed again, to 2025, armed groups that were already active in Port-au-Prince, the capital, dialed up the violence.

Even before Moïse’s assassination, these militias and armed groups existed alongside politicians who used them to do their bidding, including everything from intimidating the opposition to collecting votes . With the dwindling of the country’s elected officials, though, many of these rebel forces have engaged in excessively violent acts, and have taken control of at least 80% of the capital, according to a United Nations estimate.

Those groups, which include paramilitary and former police officers who pose as community leaders, have been responsible for the increase in killings, kidnappings and rapes since Moïse’s death, according to the Uppsala Conflict Data Program at Uppsala University in Sweden. According to a report from the U.N . released in January, more than 8,400 people were killed, injured or kidnapped in 2023, an increase of 122% increase from 2022.

“January and February have been the most violent months in the recent crisis, with thousands of people killed, or injured, or raped,” Beckett said.

Armed groups who had been calling for Henry’s resignation have already attacked airports, police stations, sea ports, the Central Bank and the country’s national soccer stadium. The situation reached critical mass earlier this month when the country’s two main prisons were raided , leading to the escape of about 4,000 prisoners. The beleaguered government called a 72-hour state of emergency, including a night-time curfew — but its authority had evaporated by then.

Aside from human-made catastrophes, Haiti still has not fully recovered from the devastating earthquake in 2010 that killed about 220,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless, many of them living in poorly built and exposed housing. More earthquakes, hurricanes and floods have followed, exacerbating efforts to rebuild infrastructure and a sense of national unity.

Since the earthquake, “there have been groups in Haiti trying to control that reconstruction process and the funding, the billions of dollars coming into the country to rebuild it,” said Beckett, who specializes in the Caribbean, particularly Haiti.

Beckett said that control initially came from politicians and subsequently from armed groups supported by those politicians. Political “parties that controlled the government used the government for corruption to steal that money. We’re seeing the fallout from that.”

Haiti Experiences Surge Of Gang Violence

Many armed groups have formed in recent years claiming to be community groups carrying out essential work in underprivileged neighborhoods, but they have instead been accused of violence, even murder . One of the two main groups, G-9, is led by a former elite police officer, Jimmy Chérizier — also known as “Barbecue” — who has become the public face of the unrest and claimed credit for various attacks on public institutions. He has openly called for Henry to step down and called his campaign an “armed revolution.”

But caught in the crossfire are the residents of Haiti. In just one week, 15,000 people have been displaced from Port-au-Prince, according to a U.N. estimate. But people have been trying to flee the capital for well over a year, with one woman telling NBC News that she is currently hiding in a church with her three children and another family with eight children. The U.N. said about 160,000 people have left Port-au-Prince because of the swell of violence in the last several months.

Deep poverty and famine are also a serious danger. Gangs have cut off access to the country’s largest port, Autorité Portuaire Nationale, and food could soon become scarce.

Haiti's uncertain future

A new transitional government may dismay the Haitians and their supporters who call for Haitian-led solutions to the crisis.

But the creation of such a government would come after years of democratic disruption and the crumbling of Haiti’s political leadership. The country hasn’t held an election in eight years.

Haitian advocates and scholars like Jemima Pierre, a professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, say foreign intervention, including from the U.S., is partially to blame for Haiti’s turmoil. The U.S. has routinely sent thousands of troops to Haiti , intervened in its government and supported unpopular leaders like Henry.

“What you have over the last 20 years is the consistent dismantling of the Haitian state,” Pierre said. “What intervention means for Haiti, what it has always meant, is death and destruction.”

In fact, the country’s situation was so dire that Henry was forced to travel abroad in the hope of securing a U.N. peacekeeping deal. He went to Kenya, which agreed to send 1,000 troops to coordinate an East African and U.N.-backed alliance to help restore order in Haiti, but the plan is now on hold . Kenya agreed last October to send a U.N.-sanctioned security force to Haiti, but Kenya’s courts decided it was unconstitutional. The result has been Haiti fending for itself.

“A force like Kenya, they don’t speak Kreyòl, they don’t speak French,” Pierre said. “The Kenyan police are known for human rights abuses . So what does it tell us as Haitians that the only thing that you see that we deserve are not schools, not reparations for the cholera the U.N. brought , but more military with the mandate to use all kinds of force on our population? That is unacceptable.”

Henry was forced to announce his planned resignation from Puerto Rico, as threats of violence — and armed groups taking over the airports — have prevented him from returning to his country.

Now that Henry is to stand down, it is far from clear what the armed groups will do or demand next, aside from the right to govern.

“It’s the Haitian people who know what they’re going through. It’s the Haitian people who are going to take destiny into their own hands. Haitian people will choose who will govern them,” Chérizier said recently, according to The Associated Press .

Haitians and their supporters have put forth their own solutions over the years, holding that foreign intervention routinely ignores the voices and desires of Haitians.

In 2021, both Haitian and non-Haitian church leaders, women’s rights groups, lawyers, humanitarian workers, the Voodoo Sector and more created the Commission to Search for a Haitian Solution to the Crisis . The commission has proposed the “ Montana Accord ,” outlining a two-year interim government with oversight committees tasked with restoring order, eradicating corruption and establishing fair elections.
