The Doctor of Education in Kinesiology Online (Ed.D. in KIN) at UNC Greensboro is a cohort-based four-year program. It is designed for practicing professionals who have a minimum of three years of experience in kinesiology or related fields. Ed.D. students are focused on professional scholarship and practice in leadership, advocacy, and teaching.

Our students address current issues in the field from an applied, interdisciplinary perspective with the goal of becoming action-oriented leaders in kinesiology. Our students, faculty, graduates and others form a community of scholars who positively impact their local communities.

For over a century, out department has been a cornerstone department of the University. Beginning as the Department of Physiology and Physical Culture in the Women’s College in 1892, the department took the progressive view that women should be physically active to improve their health and wellness.

As the department evolved and grew with the university, our name changed, but our mission to promote education in and instruction of physical health remains at our core.

Candidates for an Ed.D. in Sports Leadership may need to have a master’s in health science, sports leadership, or a related field.   • Work Experience: Many universities will want to see evidence of professional experience in your field of study; some schools may specify 3+ years of experience. But the work stipulation can be flexible. For example, Ohio State accepts K-12 teaching experience OR experience working with youth in a physical activity setting.
  • Minimum GPA: The standard minimum GPA for health education & physical education doctorates is 3.0. Big-name Colleges of Education can go higher (e.g. 3.25-3.5). If your GPA is below a certain threshold, schools may demand to see GRE scores.
  • Additional Requirements: Universities can ask for GRE or MAT scores, a résumé, letters of recommendation or professional references, an admissions essay, an academic writing sample, and/or a professional goals statement.

Health & PE Coursework

Curricula for Ed.D. programs in Health & Physical Education will reflect the title. An Ed.D. in Sports Management, which deals with on-the-ground issues in sports leadership, is going to be drastically different to an Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction – P12 Health & Physical Education, which is focused on teacher training and curriculum development.

Health & PE Internship and Fieldwork

All Ed.D. programs in Health Education or Physical Education are going to contain a large, research-based project. This can take the form of a traditional, 5-chapter dissertation (similar to a Ph.D.), a Dissertation in Practice (DiP), or a capstone project. It’s not a quality issue—many CAEP-accredited and top-ranking Colleges of Education have opted to go down the capstone route for the Ed.D. (e.g. University of Pittsburgh). So you should feel free to pick a program & project that tallies with your career goals. For instance, if you’re interested in teaching at college or university level, a program with a traditional dissertation may suit you best.

It’s worth noting that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) also posts annual occupational & wage data for Health Education Specialists and Postsecondary Recreation & Fitness Studies Teachers .

Your choice of organization will mean a great deal. Local governments will pay less than private corporations. High school departments will pay less than college departments. And professional sports teams are going to pay a lot.

Is an Ed.D. in Physical Education or Health Education Worth it?

This is a situation where we highly recommend talking to peers, mentors, and recent Ed.D. graduates in your area of expertise. An education doctorate in an “on-the-ground” field such as sports management or recreation & community services is a big investment to make. So it pays to ask alumni about their career experiences post-graduation.

  • In some cases, a master’s degree, professional certification, and work experience is going to count for a lot more than an education doctorate. When we looked at job openings for Athletic Directors, the standard minimum was a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree.
  • In other cases, a doctorate may be a “no exceptions” prerequisite (e.g. teaching at the university level, teaching other clinicians in health professions, etc.).

Department of  Kinesiology and Health Education

Pursue a Ph.D. in Physical Culture and Sport Studies to prepare for an academic career as a faculty member in Kinesiology and Health Education or another academic field with a research focus in sport and physical culture history, sport policy, and/or sport management. This program brings together the disciplines of sport history, history of physical culture and exercise science, sport and international relations, and sport economics. 

Students admitted to the doctoral program take the basic core courses for the degree and then choose additional courses to develop the research methods and subject knowledge needed to become an academic expert in their research area.

The relationship between you and your doctoral advisor is crucial to your success as it is expected that you will be engaged in research during your time in the program. Finding an advisor who understands and can assist you with your research interests is, therefore, important. Our PCSS faculty have slightly different skill sets and research interests so please take a look at our faculty profiles and publications before contacting us about pursuing this degree. Faculty members  Jan Todd ,  Thomas M. We encourage you to write and discuss your interests even if you have not yet taken the GRE. You do not have to have a completed master’s degree to apply.  

Doctoral students are expected to work closely with their adviser and other core faculty on research projects that enhance our understanding of sport history, physical culture history, sport management, Olympic studies, cultural studies, sport sociology, race and gender studies, law, political science, and ethics/philosophy. Access to the archival and book collections at the H.J. Lutcher Stark Center provides students with unparalleled resources for primary research in sport and physical culture studies.

Before Applying

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. Program in Sport Studies should have identified an area of scholarly interest that they would like to pursue in their doctoral work before applying for admission. Candidates are encouraged to contact either  Dr. Jan Todd  or  Dr. Thomas M. Hunt  by email before completing the official online application. Applicants should include in that email a brief description of research interests, any post-undergraduate academic work (master’s, law school, etc.) and undergraduate GPA and major. Applicants should also indicate if they require financial assistance to pursue doctoral work at UT.

Please note that the Ph.D. Program in Physical Culture and Sport Studies is a doctoral-level program. Most applicants have a completed master’s degree in an affiliated discipline (Sport Management, History, American Studies, Sociology, Exercise Science) or have had some form of post-professional training such as law school. Possession of a master’s degree is not required for admission but is recommended. Because the Sport Studies program is small and selective, applicants should possess a solid record of academic achievement. The GRE must be taken and full transcripts will be required for the online admission process.

Based on whether the student’s research interests match with those of the faculty in the program, whether the prospective student’s academic credentials are of an acceptable standard, and if space and funding (if needed) are available, applicants will then be instructed to complete the online admission forms located on the  Graduate School Website . Three letters of reference, official transcripts and a full research statement will be required for the online application.

Anyone applying to our must submit a writing sample . We suggest submitting either a chapter of your master’s thesis or an academic paper. You will receive an email directing you to a website where you will upload your sample after you complete the application.

The Physical Culture and Sport Studies (PCSS) program is designed for students who are interested in:

Our Ph.D. students come from a wide variety of preparatory programs including Kinesiology, Health, History, American Studies, Journalism/Communications, Law, Women and Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Exercise Science and Sport Management.

Program of Study

Students seeking admission to the Ph.D. program in Physical Cultural and Sport Studies should first contact the faculty affiliated with the program to discuss research interests and determine if a faculty member is willing to sponsor them.  Students must be accepted by a faculty member before admission.  While prior training in either Kinesiology, History, American Studies, Sport Management,  Sociology, or Philosophy is preferred, students are welcome to apply from all disciplines. A completed masters’ degree is not required for admission. Doctoral candidates without a Master’s degree, however, may be required to take additional coursework.   

Prerequisites

  • KIN 349 History of Sport and Physical Activity or a(n) equivalent sport history course from a prior university that gives you a basic understanding of the history of ancient and modern sport from a global perspective.  This prerequisite can be taken either at UT-Austin in the first semester if missing from the student’s transcript; it must be taken for a letter grade to fulfill prerequisite requirements.  
  • HIS 355N/AMS 355 Main Currents in American Culture to 1865 (Must be taken in year one if you do not have comparable coursework. One of these may be counted in the Concentration Area) 
  • HIS 360N/AMS 360 Main Currents in American Culture Since 1865 (Must be taken in year one if you do not have comparable coursework. One of these may be counted in the Concentration Area) 

Required KIN Core Courses (15 Hours)

  • KIN 395 Critical Issues in American Sport History 
  • KIN 395 History of Physical Culture and Alternative Medicine 
  • KIN 395 Physical Cultures of the Body: Race, History, and the Quest for Body Perfection
  • KIN 395 History of the Sport Industry in America
  • Three Hours from KIN 395 Sport Policy, KIN 395 Sport and International Relations, KIN 395 Sport Development, KIN 395 Sport Economics, or an additional KIN class approved by your advisor. 

Research  Methods  (15 Hours) 

  • KIN 386 Qualitative Research Methods for Physical Culture and Sport Studies 
  • KIN 395 Directed Research: Archival Research Methods for Sport Historians
  • KIN 396T Directed Research-Comprehensive Exam
  • KIN 396T Directed Research-Historical Essays- Research and Writing
  • 3 Hours of Statistics or Experimental Design Coursework as Approved by the Advisor 

Concentration/Outside Field (6-12 Hours)

6-12 Hours of Graduate Coursework from a discipline outside Kinesiology and Health Education.  You may elect to do hours in two fields, or 12-15 hours in one field, depending on research needs.  These courses must be approved by the Advisor.  American Studies and History are highly recommended for these outside courses.

No Two Programs Are the Same.  All Ph.D. programs vary depending on the research interests of the student and prior training. While there is a common core of knowledge that we want all students to possess, beyond that core doctoral students are encouraged to build their expertise in specialist areas by taking courses in their concentration that will enhance both their dissertation and their future career.  

Our faculty views research as a collaborative forum for learning and the dissemination of new knowledge and all doctoral students are expected to work on articles for scholarly journals, present their research at meetings of learned societies, and be actively engaged in research while a student in the program. Program Resources

The H.J Lutcher Stark Center

Students have access to unique resources available for studying sport and physical culture at The University of Texas. The  H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports  includes the largest and most complete archive in the field of physical culture in the world. In addition, the Stark Center is recognized as an  official Olympic Studies Center  by the International Olympic Committee. The Stark Center is also the official repository of the UT Intercollegiate Athletic Department Media Relations Archives. The Center is recognized as one of the premier sport repositories in the world giving undergraduate and graduate students in our programs great advantages not available at other universities.

Additional Libraries and Museums

The holdings of the general libraries at the University of Texas are among the best in the world. The  Dolph Briscoe Center for American History  contains the archives of the University Interscholastic League and the records of the women’s physical education program at UT among other athletic resources.

The  LBJ Presidential Library , the  Jamail Center for Legal Research , the  Harry Ransom Center , and the  Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection  are located on the UT-Austin campus and provide additional research opportunities.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physical Education

Requirements and procedures, objectives and standards.

The major objectives of doctoral study at Springfield College are:

A. Professional Preparation

The curriculum provides a foundation through courses and other learning experiences for successful candidates to obtain a high degree of preparation in a chosen field of specialization. This includes:

  • advanced knowledge and skills;
  • critical examination of the assumptions underlying the knowledge and techniques in the field;
  • re-evaluation of the techniques in light of increasing knowledge and in respect to the effect on humanity;
  • creative contribution to the advancement of physical education, including exercise physiology and sport and exercise psychology;
  • understanding of the relation of physical education, exercise physiology, and sport and exercise psychology to other fields of knowledge ;
  • awareness of ethical responsibility in the use of knowledge and skills for humane purposes.

B. Research

Through the doctoral program, successful candidates acquire new skills, an interest in the discovery of new knowledge, and the ability to carefully validate such knowledge.  The research portion of the program includes:

  • the history, development and critical examination of the various methods of logical thought and the application of these to the discovery of new knowledge;
  • understanding the scientific method including its assumptions and implications;
  • learning new techniques of research: laboratory, clinical, statistical, and other;
  • developing an intellectual approach toward development  and testing of hypotheses;
  • conducting a piece of original research under the supervision of appropriate faculty.

C.  Humanics Orientation

Springfield College is dedicated to the education of the whole person - spirit, mind, and body.  The focus of education at Springfield College is not only imparting knowledge and the search for knowledge but also applying wisdom in the use of that knowledge in service to people.  This implies:

  • wide gauged sophistication of the student and not merely a narrow specialization in any given field;
  • achievement of an optimal balance of knowledge, skill, attitude and purpose;
  • attainment of a personal integration of thought, feeling, and action in terms of a philosophy of life.

The desired data stated above are not matters that can be fully measured by tests and examinations.  In the doctoral program, there is an atmosphere that emphasizes these values and stimulates the student to achieve a personal system of values.  One purpose of the doctoral preparation is to produce professional persons who add the goal of serving humankind to scholarly and scientific interests.

D.  Accepted Standards

The doctoral program at Springfield College is distinctive in accordance with the overall objectives of the College and fully meets generally accepted standards for the highest professional attainment in graduate education in the United States.

The following sections of this document describe the specific requirements and procedures for the Ph.D., with specializations in exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, and teaching and administration.  The doctoral degree is awarded by the College, but the College must look to the faculty of the student’s field of specialization for high-level preparation in that field.

Admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physical Education Program

The objective of the Ph.D. program in Physical Education in harmony with the philosophy of the College is educating the whole person in spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to others.  It is concerned not only with imparting of knowledge and the search for knowledge but also with wisdom in the use of that knowledge in service to others. The Ph.D. program in Physical Education is designed to prepare individuals for positions in higher education in the areas of teaching and administration, exercise physiology, and/or sport and exercise psychology. Upon successful completion of the program, we expect individuals to be leaders in higher education in their chosen specialization.

Persons who wish to study toward the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physical Education degree at Springfield College must submit a formal application at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which they wish to enroll. Application forms may be obtained on line from Graduate Admissions.

The requirements for admission are as follows:

  • Master’s degree with satisfactory record from an accredited institution. (Note: Students may apply into the PhD program but must have a minimum of 30 semester hours completed. The Master’s degree must be completed by the first year of admission in the doctoral program. Failure to complete this requirement would lead to suspension of all PhD coursework until the Master’s degree is conferred.
  • Evidence of personal and professional qualities that show promise of outstanding educational, scholarly, and social leadership in the applicant’s chosen specialization.
  • A personal interview, prior to acceptance, with the Program Coordinator of the applicant’s chosen specialization.
  • Submission of GRE scores taken within five years of the date of the application.
  • Official transcripts from all previous college/university work.
  • 3.0 graduate GPA
  • Three letters of recommendation - Recommendations should speak specifically to the candidate’s ability to succeed in the program and in the profession.
  • A curriculum vita
  • Students who have or will receive a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Springfield College are not eligible for the PhD without completing at minimum 30 graduate credits at another accredited institution of higher education.

International Applicants

Springfield College recognizes the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); International English Language Testing System (IELTS); Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB); and Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic as proof of English proficiency. Scores from other English language proficiency tests will be considered on a case by case basis.

Students who do not meet English language requirements may be eligible for a conditional acceptance.  Students with a conditional acceptance are required to take English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes (which carry undergraduate credit), and may be awarded an unconditional offer upon successful completion of pre-approved ESOL classes, an acceptable score on an English language proficiency test, or upon recommendation from ESOL faculty.

Doctoral Advisement for the Ph.D. Program

The process of advisement of doctoral students is as follows:

The department chair with consultation of the program coordinator, assigns each doctoral student to an academic advisor in his/her chosen specialization. The advisor is appointed during the first semester of the student’s attendance or not later than the completion by the student of nine semester hours of work. Once appointed, the advisor shall call a meeting with the student to discuss the student’s training and experience, strengths and weaknesses, and professional objectives. On the basis of this discussion, along with an evaluation of the student’s credentials and doctoral requirements, the advisor shall identify the specified requirements of the student’s doctoral program. A copy of this individualized program tracking sheet shall be given to the student, the Department Chair, Program Coordinator/Graduate Coordinator, and Registrar. The information from the individualized program tracking sheet will be included in the student’s degree audit which is the official program tracking record for the student.

General Program Requirements

The minimum residency requirement for the Ph.D. in Physical Education is one academic year in full-time graduate study at Springfield College. Residence for the master’s degree at Springfield College or elsewhere does not meet this requirement.  Students are expected to complete the minimum number of semester hours identified in their specialization area. All work toward the Ph.D. in physical education must be completed within 10 years of admission. Academic credit accepted for the master’s degree may be counted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the doctorate provided it fits into the student’s program and falls within the acceptable time limit for doctoral credit. For specific information regarding time limits, please refer to the Time Limits section for specifics. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B) in all coursework. A grade of a C+ or lower on any 12 hours of graduate work will disqualify a student from the Ph.D. in physical education program.

Transfer of Credit

Graduate courses in which the student earned a grade of B or better from accredited institutions may be transferred and applied toward the Doctor of Philosophy degree provided that:

  • Such work fits into the student’s doctoral program
  • It falls within the acceptable time limit for doctoral credit or as otherwise approved with an extension of the default time period.
  • When determining transfer credit from a student’s master program, credits will only be accepted if it is determined that they would be considered valid for the entire length of the ten year time period (please refer to time limits for the Ph.D.)

I. Doctor of Philosophy Degree with a Specialization in Teaching and Administration in Physical Educ

The Ph.D. program in Physical Education is designed to provide broad based preparation in the field of physical education and it offers students the opportunity to design a program of study to meet their educational goals. The intent of the program is to expose students to various sub-disciplines in the field from which they will build a specific area of research study. This preparation ensures a more holistic and inclusive view of physical education than is found in many programs where specialization in one area is the emphasis.

This approach to graduate education is in concert with the mission of the College, which advocates the education of the whole person in spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to humanity. Graduates will have the necessary research expertise to continue as lifelong researchers and contributors to the body of knowledge in physical education. They will be prepared to teach in their research area as well as the various sub-disciplines at all educational levels. Graduates who have focused their studies in administration will be qualified to lead and develop programs in the private and public sectors. The completion of the program is viewed by the College as the first step taken by its graduates in assuming positions of leadership in the field of physical education.

Program of Study

The Ph.D. program in physical education, teaching and administration, consists of courses and learning experiences in the following areas:

Physical Education.  This is the student’s field of professional specialization. A program of study provided by the physical education and health education, and exercise science and sport studies faculty will help the student attain a thorough preparation of high quality. The program includes course work in pedagogical content knowledge and issues in higher education designed to prepare Ph.D. students for entry to a higher education teaching career.

Research.  Theory and practice in research are to include problems of logical and critical thinking, the scientific method, and techniques of research, as well as a piece of original research, the doctoral dissertation, conducted under faculty supervision. The dissertation is the crowning achievement of doctoral study. The problem selected should grow out of the candidate’s personal and professional interests. The dissertation may be an original contribution to knowledge or an original application of existing knowledge to the solution of a practical problem in the field.

General Education.  Consistent with the Humanics philosophy, the educational program at Springfield College, both undergraduate and graduate, prepares students not only in their field of professional specialization, but also with liberal education, and personal growth and awareness of the surrounding social scene.  Consequently, the program includes a series of non-professional courses as an integral part of the program to help the student develop as a sensitive and growing person, as a sophisticated citizen, and as an educator with wide interests and goals. A minimum of six semester hours of exclusively graduate (600-level) general education courses are designated specifically in the college offerings as “Core courses”.

Preparing Future Faculty Series.  Modeled after the preparing future faculty program designed by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, this series of coursework introduces students to academia; exposes students to the teaching, service, and scholarship responsibilities of faculty members; supports development of pedagogical skills and higher education settings; and aids the transition from doctoral student to faculty member.

Dissertation area.  Where the general nature of the intended dissertation can be identified sufficiently early in a student’s program, course work and other registrations are recommended to enhance the student’s qualifications to conduct the dissertation.

Electives.  Selection of electives provides effective support of the total Ph.D. program and results from consultation between the student and the advisor.

The actual number of semester hours is likely to be more than the minimum stated. Flexibility is encouraged to provide for the particular educational needs of each student. The requirements in each case will be determined not only on the extent of graduate credit accumulated, but with a view toward optimum preparation for the student in the intended field of service.

Students select a total of 9 credits at the 600 level or above in consultation with their academic advisor from the AEXS, EDUC or PHED categories.

The actual number of semester hours is likely to be more than the minimum previously stated. Flexibility is encouraged in order to provide for the special and unique needs of each individual student as determined by the academic advisor and approved by the Program Coordinator. The requirements in each case will be determined, not only on the extent of graduate credit accumulated, but also in view of an optimum preparation for the student’s intended field of service. The entire doctoral program, including the areas of specialization will be oriented toward the development of the student in reciprocal relationship to the community from local to international levels.

II. Doctor of Philosophy Degree with a Specialization in Sport and Exercise Psychology

A doctorate in physical education in sport and exercise psychology serves to further illuminate the humanics philosophy of Springfield College. Integral to the philosophy is the integration of the spirit, mind, and body, the whole person, for leadership in service to humanity. Sport and exercise psychology is a sub-discipline of the sport sciences/physical education and as such provides the student an opportunity to examine the integrated mind/body responses in an exercise and sport context.

Students in the program would, then, gain an understanding of the scientific, sociological, psychological, and research bases of sport, as is necessary in working with athletes in a performance enhancement context. A Ph.D. degree is suggested for certification in the field. Upon successful completion of the program, students may seek certification through the organizations for sport psychology, The Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), in conjunction with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), and the American Psychology Association (APA).

Graduates of the sport and exercise psychology Ph.D. program will be prepared to teach sport and exercise psychology at all educational levels and teach in the areas of sociology and philosophy of sport. Graduates will be prepared to contribute to the current knowledge base of the field by continuing research in sport and exercise psychology, and will be qualified to work as a sport psychology consultant at all levels for athletes, athletic departments, coaches, exercise and fitness programs, and national governing bodies (NGB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as well as the USOC.

Sport and Exercise Psychology.  This is the student’s field of professional specialization. Course work in sport and exercise psychology, applied sport and exercise psychology, sport psychometrics, and special seminars in sport and exercise psychology is included in the student’s program of study.

Related Course Work.  Course requirements are to support and supplement the specialization in sport and exercise psychology and include, but are not limited to, course work related to philosophy, sociology, physiology of sport, motor learning and control, motor development, psychopathology, and issues and techniques in counseling.

Research.  Theory and practice in research are to include problems of logical thinking, the scientific method, and techniques of research, as well as original research, the doctoral dissertation, conducted under faculty supervision. The dissertation is the capstone experience of doctoral study. The problem selected to study should grow out of the candidate’s personal and professional interests. The dissertation may be an original contribution to knowledge or an original application of existing knowledge to the solution of a practical problem in the field.

General Education.  Consistent with its philosophy of education, Springfield College is concerned in the entire educational program, both undergraduate and graduate, not only with a student’s thorough preparation in the field of professional specialization, but also with liberal education, personal growth, and awareness of the surrounding society.  Consequently, a series of nonprofessional courses is included as an integral part of the program of the Ph.D. student to help in the attainment of breadth in development as a sensitive and growing individual, as a sophisticated, contributing citizen, and as an educator with wide interests and goals.

From the earliest days following its founding in 1885, Springfield College has been known worldwide as a pioneer in physical education teaching and scholarship. The specialization in exercise physiology at the doctoral level is greatly influenced by such legendary faculty members as Dr. Peter Karpovich, an eminent scholar in exercise physiology and co-founder of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Karpovich taught at the college from 1927 to 1961 and was internationally recognized for his innovative physiological research.

The Ph.D. program with a specialization in exercise physiology provides students with knowledge in theory and laboratory techniques and teaches students how to further develop and promote research skills. The program offers a personalized approach to graduate education, with opportunity for self-directed research eligible for presentation to the American College of Sports Medicine and publication in peer reviewed journals.

Exercise Physiology .  This is the student’s field of professional specialization. Course work in exercise physiology, biochemistry, cardiopulmonary physiology and exercise, neuromuscular physiology and exercise, environmental physiology, medical physiology, and graded exercise testing and electrocardiography is included in the student’s program of study.

Related Course work .  Course requirements are included to support and supplement the specialization in exercise physiology and include, but are not limited to, cell and molecular biology, cellular physiology, gross anatomy, philosophy of sport, sociology of sport, sport psychology, and biomechanics.

Research .  Theory and practice in research are to include problems of logical thinking, the scientific method, and techniques of research, as well as a piece of original research, the doctoral dissertation, conducted under faculty supervision. The dissertation is the crowning achievement of doctoral study. The problem selected should grow out of the candidate’s personal and professional interests. The dissertation may be an original contribution to knowledge or an original application of existing knowledge to the solution of a practical problem in the field.

Electives.  Selection of electives provides effective support of the total Ph.D. program and results from consultation between the student and the advisory committee.

In view of the present rate of expansion of knowledge and the general desirability of completing the requirements for the Ph.D. within a definite period of time, the following time limitation will be observed:

The default time period for a PhD in Physical Education is ten years from the date of acceptance into the program.

When determining transfer credit from a student’s master program, credits will only be accepted if it is determine that they would be considered valid for the entire length of the ten year time limitIf credit is accepted toward the doctoral program that would only be considered valid for a period of time less than the ten years, then the time period should be adjusted accordingly.

Graduate academic work, to be given full credit toward the requirements for the Ph.D., whether in transfer or completed in residence, must have been secured within ten years prior to the date of one’s candidacy for the Ph.D. degree. In special circumstances, credit for work completed beyond the ten-year limit will be recognized, but only upon special recommendation of the student’s advisor and approval by the Program Coordinator/Graduate Coordinator.

All requirements for the Ph.D. degree, including the dissertation must be completed within a period of five years after the student has passed the qualifying examinations and has been matriculated as a candidate for the degree. Failure to complete the requirements within the time limit stated above will mean that the student will be expected to repeat the qualifying examination in order to reestablish candidacy.  Following requalification, a maximum of three years of additional candidacy is prescribed. A student who does not complete all requirements by the end of this three-year period is subject to dismissal from the doctoral program.

Plagiarism is defined as the appropriation of, and use as one’s own, the writings and ideas of another. Intent to deceive does not have to be present for plagiarism to occur. Students should be cautious when “borrowing” material from other sources. Rewording (paraphrasing) of an author’s ideas does not absolve the student from giving credit and making the appropriate citation. Students who plagiarize are subject to dismissal from the graduate program.

Per APA Rule 6.02 “Self-plagiarism refers to the practice of presenting one’s own previously published work as though it were new” (p. 170). “The core of the new document must constitute an original contribution to knowledge, and only the amount of previously published material necessary to understand that contribution should be included, primarily in the discussion of theory and methodology” (p. 16). “Avoid charges of self-plagiarism by familiarizing yourself with the ethical standards regarding duplicate publication and the legal standards of fair use (see also section 1.10)” p. 170.

The Ph.D. programs in the Department of Kinesiology provide the opportunity for advanced study related to exercise science, physical education, and sport management and policy. Specialized research programs are available in biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise psychology, measurement, motor behavior, pedagogy, and sport management and policy.

The mission of the kinesiology graduate programs in the department is to educate students, conduct research, and provide public service related to exercise science, physical education, and sport management and policy. The graduate programs in the department are dedicated to studying and developing new knowledge related to physical activity in its many forms, including exercise for improvement of health and physical fitness, activities of daily living, work, sport, dance, and play in a variety of groups, including special populations such children and the elderly; persons with disability, injury or disease; and athletes. The causes and consequences of physical activity are examined from different perspectives that apply knowledge, methods of inquiry, and principles from traditional areas of study in the biological, behavioral and physical sciences. An interdisciplinary approach involving several of these areas is often used in addressing problems of importance to society. Students in the kinesiology graduate programs are prepared for a variety of careers involving teaching, research, and delivery of services related to physical activity and fitness, health promotion, coaching, sport management, and rehabilitation and sports medicine in a variety of settings including schools, colleges and universities, public and private agencies, clinical environments, government, business and the military.

Physical education, ph.d..

The doctoral program in physical education is designed to prepare individuals for academic positions in departments of physical education and/or kinesiology at universities and colleges. Concentrations are offered in physical education pedagogy and motor behavior. Individuals who complete the doctoral program should be prepared to assume leadership roles in physical education teacher education or motor behavior. This document provides information about the expectations for doctoral study, sample programs of study, and other required experiences for doctoral degree in physical education.

Learning Outcomes

  • Cultural Competence. Advanced program candidates demonstrate a high level of competence in understanding and responding to diversity of culture, language, and ethnicity.
  • Knowledge and Application of Ethical Principles. Advanced program candidates demonstrate in-depth knowledge and thoughtful application of the Code of Ethical Conduct and other guidelines relevant to their professional role.
  • Communication Skills. Admission Requirements

In addition to submitting all documents required for admission to the Graduate School, individuals applying for the doctoral program in physical education will participate in an interview with departmental faculty and must submit the following information:

  • a sample of expository writing to include future goals and specific research interests
  • a current curriculum vitae
  • two letters of recommendation

Degree Requirements (60 Post-Masters Hours)

Total hours required.

Minimum of 60 hours beyond the master’s degree; the degree must be completed in six years.

Qualifying Assessment

Written and oral assessment that must be successfully completed prior to the completion of 18 hours of 700- and 800-level course work.

Required Coursework

Students are expected to complete a minimum of 60 credits beyond the masters degree. The program of study committee may decide that more than 60 credits are necessary for an individual student to meet minimal expectations based on prior experiences and future professional goals. There are at least five categories within which students will complete courses to successfully receive a Ph.D.

These five areas include the following:

  • Courses in the Department of Physical Education;
  • Research Methods;
  • Research Practica;
  • Dissertation

All doctoral students follow a similar template for selection of required course work with a focus on either physical education pedagogy or motor behavior. This template is presented below. Specific programs of study are determined by the program of study committee.

Physical Education Program Content (15-18 Hours)

Research methods (15 hours), cognate (9-12 hours), research practica (3-6 hours), dissertation (12 hours), foreign language.

Students are required to meet competency in a foreign language or in computer and/or technology skills.

Comprehensive Exam

Students are required to successfully complete a written comprehensive examination and an oral examination.

Health & Sport Pedagogy - Human Movement Sciences (Education, Ph.D.)

The doctoral program in Health & Sport Pedagogy focuses on research, scholarship, and leadership opportunities that prepare individuals for academic positions in departments of physical education/ kinesiology at universities and colleges. This is a research-focused program, which positions graduating students to engage in empirical research and contribute to knowledge generation in the field. Students may focus on research in their personal areas of interest within the fields of health, physical education, and/or adapted physical education.

Health Specialties Teachers, Postsecondary

Teach courses in health specialties, in fields such as dentistry, laboratory technology, medicine, pharmacy, public health, therapy, and veterinary medicine.

Three letters of recommendation from professional sources qualified to assess your suitability for study at the doctoral level. One letter of recommendation should be from a graduate advisor or faculty member and one should be from a current or former supervisor.

For Admission to the Health & Sport Pedagogy Program

Official GRE scores taken within the last 5 years that indicate a total score of at least 297 (1000 by former scoring standard) for both the verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning sections and a minimum of 4.0 on the analytical writing component. While these scores are recommended, other portions of the total application package will be considered. The Sport and Recreation Management emphasis area will also accept GMAT scores of 470 or higher.

Applicants whose native language is not English must also submit current scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 550.

Featured Courses

This course provides experiences of teaching adapted physical education content in lecture and gymnasium settings. Students will develop an understanding of a broad spectrum of disability related content that is applicable to physical education, and gain a deep knowledge of specific topics within disability studies. General and disability specific teaching strategies will be discussed.

This course covers assessment/evaluation theory and practices in PE/Sport. Multiple evaluation designs and techniques in different domains such as teaching/coaching, learning, and performance will be discussed along with technology applications in PE/Sport.

This course covers a combination of motor development and motor learning topics. The course information and structure are designed to optimize practitioners' effectiveness in the classroom and on the field via practical application of motor behavior theories, concepts and principles. Attention is directed toward understanding the acquisition of skills from the fundamental, initial level to the sport-specific, more advanced level, toward optimal age and skill-level practices and developing appropriate motor skill assessments for infants through older adulthood. Past and current research findings are incorporated into each of the course topics.

All About the PhD in Rehabilitation Science Program

Brendan Dougherty, PT, PhD , assistant professor and co-director of the Rehabilitation Science Graduate Program, shares the history, structure, and ongoing successes of the PhD in Rehabilitation Science program.

Can you give us an overview of the rehabilitation science PhD program?

Our PhD program recently celebrated 25 years! It began in 1998 and evolved out of the former Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (known as PM&R) primarily from the leadership of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy programs. There was (and still is) a growing national need for PhD-level trained clinicians and scientists to advance research related to physical rehabilitation. 

The goal for starting the Rehabilitation Science Program was two-fold: 1) bring together experts to advance science that could then be applied to patient care and clinical practice (i.e. translational research), and 2) integrate research training into these clinical programs. So, our roots are very much in the fields of physical therapy and occupational therapy. At the time, there were only a handful of like programs nationally. We were on the forefront along with the likes of the University of Florida, the University of Delaware, and the University of Southern California, to name a few.

When we welcomed our first class, it was very small—about six students and eight faculty. We've been growing through the years, more than quadrupling our number of students, building our curriculum, and expanding faculty beyond those in physical and occupational therapy. Our program, and the field of rehabilitation science, is now a broad, interdisciplinary collective of scientists working in research areas at each level of the translational research continuum with the shared goal of advancing rehabilitation care for patients of all ages.    

What is the structure of the PhD program?  

Full-time students generally take 4-5 years to earn their PhD. In the first two years students take classes, followed by preliminary written and oral exams. In year three, students are generally prepared to dive into their dissertation project, which culminates in a final thesis defense. This progression to degree completion is in line with the other PhD programs in the Medical School.   

What kinds of students are in the rehabilitation medicine PhD program?

As our program has grown, diversified, and broadened across departments and centers at the University and VA Medical Center, the make-up of our students has changed as well. Right now, we have 28 PhD students, and they are from all different academic backgrounds. Early and mid-career clinicians are attracted to our program, with about half of our students having clinical degrees (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, orthotics and prosthetics, exercise physiology). 

However, more and more students are applying to our program straight from undergraduate or master’s degree programs with broad experience in biomedical engineering, physiology, neuroscience, public health, and chemistry, for example. Since our faculty are experts in areas spanning the basic and clinical sciences, we attract students with a range of research interests, and we feel that this breadth is a significant strength of our program.   

Who are the faculty members for this program?  

Our faculty members are a lot of the same names you see in physical therapy, as well as faculty from UMN-affiliated institutions including Gillette Children’s and the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. Faculty with primary appointments in occupational therapy, kinesiology, neurology, and neuroscience also have graduate faculty appointments in the Rehabilitation Science program. We look forward to exploring opportunities for further expansion to include faculty from family medicine! 

How does the PhD program fit into the overall Division of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science?  

Rehabilitation Science’s expressed mission is to train the next generation of scientists and academics that will go on to teach and advance the science of rehabilitation. Our graduates’ research will be translated into application in the real world, in the clinic or hospital setting. There is significant synergy with the goals and mission of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, with our programs aligning in mission, faculty, and long-term goals. 

Specifically, the PhD program overlaps with physical therapy in research areas related to human performance, human movement, and recovery from injury and disease. But it is important to emphasize that rehabilitation science is not exclusive to physical therapy. Biomedical engineering, exercise science, neuroscience, occupational therapy, physiology, and other areas are represented as well. 

We run the gamut from bench scientists that are looking at things from the cellular and molecular level all the way to human subject research. As our program continues to grow, we are excited about further broadening these research areas to encompass all aspects of the rehabilitation experience.    

What do students choose to study while in the program?  

One highlight of our program is its flexibility. Students have the freedom to choose electives from a variety of different disciplines on campus. We may have a student who is interested in neuro rehab, so they might take courses from Neuroscience. Students who are more interested in psychosocial outcomes might be doing community-based studies out of Public Health.

But the hallmark of what binds all of what our students do is our robust research development and our core curriculum. These are skills that all students need and practice and will stay with them throughout their career. One example is our grant writing course where students are guided through the creation of an NIH F31-style grant proposal based on their research direction. Many students go on to submit these proposals, and students in our program have been fortunate to receive several NIH F31 fellowships. 

We also have a presentation course focused on speaking scientifically yet relating research in layperson terms. We try for a holistic training of the student—that is our broad-based curriculum. Each student then breaks out and goes into sub-curriculum electives that meet their individual needs based on the type of research they're going to be doing.  

Is there anything else that you would like to share about the program?   

We are eager to get the word out about who we are! Our program is relatively small compared to some other PhD graduate programs in the Medical School, but our unique interdisciplinary research and flexible curriculum are likely to be attractive to a wide variety of individuals interested in graduate studies.   

We’re proud of who we’ve become in 25 short years. The evidence is there in terms of our impact. In addition to our success with NIH F31 awards, our students frequently receive institutional awards such as the Graduate School’s Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships. Our trainees are routinely welcomed on training grants and have accepted invitations nationally and internationally to present their work. We may be small, but we take pride in the fact that we are impactful.

Masters Program in Adapted Physical Education is Awarded $1.25M Federal Grant

Assistant Professor of Kinesiology Scott McNamara was letting his elderly dog out in the middle of the night when he received a congratulatory email—his application for a federal grant of $1.25 million to support graduate students in the University of New Hampshire’s new one-year master’s program in adapted physical education (APE) had been approved. The grant, which extends over five years with the potential for renewal, covers all the fees associated with eligible students’ full tuition, textbooks, and APE certification, as well as $9,000 per year toward living expenses.

“I was so excited I couldn’t fall back asleep, so I went to the gym around four in the morning,”  recalls McNamara, who launched the APE graduate program in the fall of 2023.

When McNamara came to UNH’s College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) in 2021, he was thrilled about the opportunities to teach physical education and APE courses, and to focus on research. However, from day one, “the OSEP grant and the masters program were on my radar,” he says. While he hoped to develop the masters program and apply for the grant within a couple of years, with more than 150 applicants competing for 30 slots, he never expected to receive the grant with his first application.

The interdisciplinary APE masters program overlaps with multiple fields of study, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, therapeutic recreation, health and physical education, adaptive sports, and special education, and is designed to give graduates the skills to make a wide variety of sports accessible to students with disabilities.

Whether sports are being utilized as means of health promotion, a competitive outlet, or simply an opportunity for fun and joy, all students deserve the option to safely engage in activities they find enjoyable, regardless of their disability status, according to McNamara. “Access to quality physical activity should be looked at as a civil right,” he says.

“I see the master’s program as a foundation of change,” says McNamara, whose passion for the field stemmed from growing up with a younger brother with a disability. “I’m a pretty cynical person but I truly believe that,” he adds.

“The grant has been available since the inception of APE in 1975, and I have seen both in real time and historically this blue zone around it,” explains McNamara. As trained professionals graduate and enter fields like consulting, education, and school administration, they provide wider opportunities for children to participate in adapted physical education, “there’s this trickle-down effect,” he says. “It’s like the Field of Dreams. If you build it, they will come.”

Rehabilitation Science

Physical Therapy is a healthcare profession with the primary purpose of promoting optimal physical function and healthy living.  Physical therapists apply evidence-based practice with scientific principles to improve mobility by developing individualized treatment plans.  The goals are to prevent, improve, and/or maintain functional mobility at all levels of activity.  Physical therapy encompasses areas of specialization and includes the development of new approaches to more effectively meet existing and emerging health care needs.  Other professional activities that physical therapists participate in include research, education, community health promotion, and administration.  To learn more about physical therapy, visit the American Physical Therapy Association website .

UTEP offers a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.  The application process is very competitive with specific minimum requirements listed below.  The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at The University of Texas at El Paso is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314; telephone: 703-706-3245; email:  [email protected] ; website: http://www.capteonline.org .  Graduates of the DPT Program are eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE).  After successful completion of this examination, graduates apply for state licensure usually based on the results of the NPTE scores.  

A felony conviction may affect eligibility for Physical Therapy licensure in the State of Texas (or other states). Questions concerning Texas licensure may be answered by contacting the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, 333 Guadalupe Ste 2-510 Austin, TX 78701.

Program Mission

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Doctor of Physical Therapy Program will graduate highly qualified doctors of physical therapy prepared to provide culturally proficient and linguistically competent care in our border region and beyond. We endeavor to develop leaders who are committed to patient-centered care, evidence-based practice, our community’s health, life-long learning, and the advancement of the physical therapy profession.

Physical Therapy Curriculum 

The DPT curriculum is a lockstep curriculum where all didactic courses are offered only once following a lockstep sequence. During the first year, students complete courses in foundational and clinical sciences as well as general physical therapy examination and intervention procedures.  Clinical courses begin in the third semester including Cardiopulmonary Patient Management. 

During the second year, students continue with clinical courses focusing on patient examination and treatment with emphasis on integument, orthopedic, and neurological impairments. In addition, students study impairments specific and unique to pediatric patients. Most of the third year is devoted to clinical education.

The final didactic course addresses emerging trends in physical therapy.  Students also complete a final capstone project.

The full-time clinical experiences during the third year of the program occur at facilities located in various parts of Texas and the surrounding states.  The expense of relocating and working at these sites is the student's responsibility. 

Admission Requirements

A Bachelor's degree is required prior to admission.  The Required Prerequisites Course List is listed below.  Note that a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on four point scale is required to apply to the program.

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required, and while there is no minimum score required, the score will be considered in the competitive admissions process.  International students must take the TOEFL examination unless exempt (eg Bachelor degree obtained in the US).  In addition, 50 clock hours of volunteer or paid experience in a physical therapy setting is required, and must be supervised by a licensed physical therapist.

Minimum Admission Requirements

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution
  • Completed Physical Therapy application by set deadline
  • Official transcripts from all universities or colleges attended must be sent to PTCAS by set deadline
  • Completion of  38 hours of required prerequisite courses
  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a minimum prerequisite coursework GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Fifty (50) clock hours of documented volunteer or paid work experience in a physical therapy setting under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist reported to PTCAS by set deadline
  • One recommendation from a physical therapist who supervised the applicant's work or volunteer experience sent to PTCAS by set deadline
  • Two recommendations from individuals concerning the attributes which qualify the applicant for this program sent to PTCAS by set deadline (See www.ptcas.org for qualifying recommenders)
  • Applicants from countries where English is not the first language are required to demonstrate English proficiency. Please consult the graduate school website for required scores.

NOTE: To engage in clinical rotations, which are a crucial element in the curriculum, all students in the Physical Therapy Program must undergo and pass a background check and drug screen prior to matriculation. Applicants will be responsible for the costs of obtaining a background check report and drug screen. In addition, students are required to obtain immunization required by the state of Texas and clinical affiliates.  Information is available at the College of Health Sciences compliance Web site.  .

Prerequisite Courses

Applicants for the program should have completed the following prerequisite courses (38 semester credit hours):

  •  8 semester credit hours in biological sciences with labs (not botany) 8 semester credit hours in general chemistry with labs 8 semester credit hours in general physics with labs 4 semester credit hours in anatomy with labs AND
  • 4 semester credit hours in physiology with labs OR(a two course sequence in anatomy and physiology with labs totaling 8 credit hours 3 semester credit hours in psychology 3 semester credit hours in statistics

Recommended courses (not required for admission, but may contribute to success in physical therapy education):  Exercise Physiology, Medical Terminology, Public Speaking course (or participation in Toastmasters)

Selection Criteria

Completion of the above requirements makes a student eligible for selection, but does not guarantee admission to the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program.  The final selection is competitive.

Admissions Process

The deadline for application changes from year to year and is available on the UTEP DPT website at http://www.utep.edu/chs/pt/ and http://www.ptcas.org/home.aspx .  Applicants will be informed of admissions decisions after all applications have been reviewed.

The Columbia University Programs in Physical Therapy offer a dynamic, diverse environment, with opportunities for entry-level and post-professional study, research, and the provision of exemplary clinical care at one of our Columbia University Physical Therapy Faculty Practice locations. The Programs Mission is to   create an   equitable and collaborative   educational environment where students and faculty are supported to develop their unique talents to deliver excellent clinical care   and produce impactful research. We aim to deliver a customized and inclusive signature education that cultivates leaders to   meet the challenges of evolving global healthcare systems.      

Our entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy program educates students who wish to enter the field of physical therapy. We offer robust post-professional programs including an Orthopedic Residency, Performing Arts Fellowship in collaboration with Westside Dance Physical Therapy, a Doctor of Education in Movement Science (Physical Therapy)-a partnership with Teachers College, and competency-based continuing professional development courses. These initiatives provide licensed physical therapists with the change to enhance their skills within a formal and structured learning environment.

The programs are part of the Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine in the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City's Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
