There are plenty of easy steps that you can take to help make your community a better place. By building a relationship with your neighbors and your local police department, you’ll raise awareness and make it easier to enact change in your area. Just remember, you are not going to find success if you go out trying to fight crime yourself. The goal here is to build your community up to make it less welcoming for criminals, not to confront strangers or call the police every time you see something vaguely suspicious.

Get to know your neighbors.

• Criminals don’t like to be challenged. If a burglar is driving around looking for houses to break into, they’re going to be put-off if they see a bunch of folks in the neighborhood chatting it up.
• There’s a strategy you can use here known as positive loitering. The premise is that if you hang out outside with people in the neighborhood, you can keep your eyes peeled and show criminals that they aren’t welcome. [2] X Research source

Start a neighborhood watch.

• The first goal of a neighborhood watch is to report crime and suspicious activity. Outside of that, you could institute citizen patrols, clean up vandalism, or organize youth events.
• Remind everyone to stay reasonably cautious and not to get paranoid about crime. Some watch groups have resulted in racism and hysteria, because people started feeling like they were the cops. Get to know your local police department.

Report suspicious activity when you see it.

• Don’t call 911 if there isn’t a crime taking place or the suspicious activity isn't an emergency or a crime in progress.
• For issues that are not so black and white if they constitute an emergency, check resources in your relevant area to see what issues they expected to be reported to 911. For example, in New York City, illegal marijuana smoking is an issue that they officially instruct citizens to call 911. [7] X Research source

Push local politicians to do more.

• You could ask them to tear down vacant properties in your area. There’s a lot of evidence that abandoned buildings are linked to higher crime rates. [10] X Research source
• If you don’t have streetlights, ask for them! Street lighting can dramatically lower crime.
• If you’ve noticed an uptick in problematic loitering or public drinking around local businesses, you could let your local representative know [11] X Research source

Keep your neighborhood clean.

• Cleaning up and painting over the graffiti in your neighborhood is a great way to make it look nicer.
• This is a phenomenon known as broken window theory. The premise is that small signs of decay—like broken windows—send a psychological message that law and order are not being enforced. It’s a hotly-debated idea, but there’s evidence that it has merit.

Increase the number of cameras around your home.

Put up signage as a warning to criminals.

• You can throw a security company sign in your yard, even if you don’t have a security system installed.
• Even if you never got an official neighborhood watch off of the ground, you can still ask about putting the signs up! Criminals won’t know the difference.
• Consult your local government before nailing signs to electrical poles and such. In most cases they’re going to honor small requests like these.

Start a community garden and cultivate green spaces.

• When it comes to your hedges and bushes, make sure you trim them low enough so that you can see out of the window. Keep them small enough that a potential burglar won’t be able to hide themselves near a door and hide while they try to break in.

Give your time or money to local youth groups.

• This is also just a great way to make the world a better place. The more positivity you can inject into your community, the better you’re going to feel about your neighborhood.

People of different age, education and background can understand it, as it is specially written in the simple and easy-to-understand language with examples and explanations. Life does not stand still, and crime, unfortunately too. Burglary has been an important problem in my neighborhood, as well as in many other ones. People invent new ways of their homes protection, but criminals tend to find new and new ways of braking into houses and taking their property. This paper is dedicated to the problem of burglary and in particular the possible ways of this problem solution. In fact, by performing simple rules and following them, it is possible to decrease the possibility of breaking into house almost to 0. First, it is necessary to understand what kinds of burglaries are the most widespread. The first is robbery when owners are not at home. Such robberies occur most often. Criminals steal everything they can find and carry out - money, jewelry, home appliances, clothes, documents, and objects of value (tools, antiques). People who have become the victim of a robbery, are shocked when they come into the apartment, where everything is turned upside down, and all the valuables are stolen. All that is acquired over many years, in a moment was lost or spoiled. After this, there is always a feeling of resentment and humiliation. But all of this could have been avoided if previously taken appropriate measures. Another popular kind is robbery, when the owners are in the house. For the owners of the home it is the most dangerous situation. In this case, their life is threatened (Badiora, Oluwadare and Dada 420). The consequences can be very sad. There are cases when the hosts managed to fight off robbers and protect their house. But more often it causes harm to varying degrees. In such case it is great if the person is healthy. But the psychological trauma of the incident may remain for a lifetime. So how to prevent the robbery? The best protection against burglary is considered to be a set of measures: good steel door, grating or shutters on the windows, alarm system and video surveillance system with connection to the control of private security. However, not everyone can afford this level of security, although it is necessary to aspire to it. There are time-tested ways to prevent burglaries - some rules, by observing which people can provide at least some security in their homes. The first step would be to install a steel door with normal locks - it's like they say half the success of our business. Further - it is desirable that there was intercom at the entrance - this will limit access to the porch of all comers. It is also a great idea to hold a meeting of the neighborhood and ask them to not open the doors to strangers. If in the intercom rang strangers – it is necessary to always look out into the yard, and only then open the door (Amodio 67). So, intercom and a steel door with normal locks - this is a guarantee of a decent quiet life. For those who live in private houses or at the first floors of multi-stored building, it is always necessary to close the windows when they leave the house, because burglars can find a way to get into the house even through a small hole. But it is better to put the protective shutters or just bars on the windows, as in this way it will be possible to protect the house from minor thieves, drug addicts and alcoholics who can get into the house even when the owners are sleeping peacefully in it. Often installing bars on the windows is important for the residents of the second and last floor, because thieves use roofs and porches in order to get to the balcony, and to the flat. In some houses it is possible to install a metal tambour door to several apartments. The price of such doors is relatively low considering the fact that it can be financed by dividing the sum for 3-4 flats. If someone is against it, then it is better to pay for such a "negligent" member and just give him the keys. When installing such doors, it is necessary to move the doorbells. It is also possible to optionally equip the doors with audio and video intercom, as well as an electromagnetic lock, which can be opened directly from the apartments, and it will not be necessary for the owners to go through the vestibule (which can be quite long) in order to unlock the door. Another great opportunity to defend a house from burglaries is to establish good relations with the neighbors (Dannatt 21). When some house owners go on vacation or on a long trip – they can give keys to neighbors and ask them to watch over their apartment - listen to the strange sounds on the territory, timely change the bulbs, pull out the mail from the mailbox, because a full box is a sure signal that the owners are for a long time not at home. It is a good idea to ask them once a day to open and close the door to the apartment or come to the house. It is necessary to remove the "traps" which can silently put a thief. "Trap" can be a match, wedged between the door frame and the canvas, a piece of cookie under the rug. Thief sets "traps" in the door, such a match, and if he does not find it after a while - it means that someone attends the apartment or house. If such relations exist between neighbors, it makes burglary much more difficult for the criminals. Most importantly, if people are going to leave, even for a few days – it is necessary for them not to tell it to anyone around except a trusted neighbor. The friends in the yard, or even on the porch may be people not entirely trustworthy. They may blurt out that house owners have left a long time and thus lead criminals to the empty apartment. Casual acquaintances should not be allowed into the apartment. Be sure that it will be viewed from all angles. All issues are resolved in the hallway. It is also necessary not to forget to change the locks immediately if a person loses keys or entrusted keys to workers who carried out repairs in an apartment - especially now - it's easy enough to do. When replacing the lock lever, at the same time it is desirable to protect the armor plate that covers it from the primitive drill support column. It is important not to use locks of old design - now any schoolboy can open them. Check the condition of the machinery thus: open doors and pull out all the deadbolts locks, then grab the crossbars and check how much they backlash. Big backlash should not be - otherwise the locks should be replaced. Ordinary doors and locks issued in the last century have a lifespan of an average of no more than 7 years, after that period they must serve either by replacing the worn parts, or should be replaced with new, otherwise, once, slamming the door behind - you can open it only by calling 911.

I wanted to make my community safer and more neighborly. The advice I got surprised me.

When I moved into a densely populated urban neighborhood south of Louisville, Kentucky with my husband a few years ago we noticed two things right away. We experienced more crime than in the neighborhood we'd moved from. And in no time we knew a large swathe of our neighbors, versus the sole couple we knew on our old block.

In conversation with neighbors one night, a friend from the next block made a passing comment. “You have a responsibility to the neighborhood when you live somewhere like this,” she said. Unlike in the suburbs where you can come home, close your garage door, and be done with the world outside, here we all look out for each other — and we care, passionately, about what happens in our neighborhood.

And that's key to reducing crime, according to University of Michigan professor Marc A. Zimmerman, Ph.D., who wrote “ Want to fight crime? Plant some flowers with your neighbor ” based on his work with the University of Michigan School of Public Health Youth Violence Prevention Center.

Eager to learn how people like my neighbors and I could battle a recent spate of crime in our community, I reached out to Zimmerman for insights into his research that anyone looking to prevent crime in their neighborhood could learn from. And I spoke with Major Joshua Judah, Commander of my neighborhood's police division .

Hit the streets After a big move, running helped me learn to love where I live

Zimmerman says busy streets = safer streets.

While there's no easy answer of course, a lot of what Zimmerman had to share boiled down to one concept: creating busy streets. Why busy?

“I grew up going to New York City,” Zimmerman said. “I always want to walk on the busy street — I might get pickpocketed, but probably not beaten up or stabbed.”

He was looking for a counterpart to what the broken windows theory had become, he said, by asking: “What builds a neighborhood back up?”

Busy streets flips the logic of the broken windows theory — a controversial criminological approach to public safety — on its head, Zimmerman wrote. Broken windows defenders see urban disorder in U.S. cities — graffiti, litter, actual broken windows and the like — as a catalyst of antisocial behavior. So they direct police to crack down on minor offenses like vandalism, turnstile jumping and public drinking.

With an emphasis on looking at positive approaches like empowerment and engaging youth rather than 'fixing them,' we looked at busy streets, which is 'if we build it they will come,'” he said.

Green spaces can make a difference.

“What happens if we start creating nice green spaces?” he went on. “Does greening make a difference?”

In a word? Yes. “I feel more confident in this than almost anything else I've done in my research,” he said.

Zimmerman took that research to Flint, Michigan, a city known for crime and blight long before the water crisis (and hometown for my husband's family), where he documented the process of neighborhood engagement and its results on crime.

The project involved a group of residents along with businesses and colleges called the University Avenue Corridor Coalition who tackled a three-mile stretch of central Flint with regular neighborhood cleanup days.

The coalition grew from a group of residents and stakeholders who attended a workshop on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, reported the local online magazine Flintside , aided by some large grants.

“What they did is say 'we're going to take control of this area,'” said Zimmerman. "[That included] gems of Flint in its heyday that had gone into disrepair and were run down. They cleaned up the median, they put lighting up, made a bike path, they extended beyond this street. Taking over an empty park , they put sidewalks in and made it more inviting.”

One big success for the group and neighborhood was replacing a corner liquor store with a sandwich shop, Zimmerman said. For anyone who lives in a place where you can walk to get groceries or food anytime, putting in a Jimmy John's may not seem like much. But this liquor store had been called a “Stab 'n’ Grab” because of the frequent fights breaking out, he said, and this was a part of town with almost nowhere to go eat. Once there was a place to go, “people started coming during the day, and at night wasn't as much of a hangout. Businesses across the street were inspired to fix up their places.”

The result of these efforts? “According to the coalition’s latest report , assaults decreased 54 percent, robberies 83 percent and burglaries 76 percent between 2013 and 2018,” Zimmerman wrote.

“It’s also meant seeing the neighborhood come alive with food trucks, bike patrols and neighborhood cleanup days — all of which have increased quality of life and safety along the avenue,” Flintside reported.

It can be as simple as the length of the grass

So can something as simple as making an unkempt neighborhood prettier reduce crime? Zimmerman has been studying just that.

He's working on a paper now that looks at three conditions: a vacant lot that's not mowed, one that's mowed by a professional, and one where a neighborhood group takes care of it with mowing or a pocket park.

“What we found was with the professional mowers over time the crime went down,” he said. But it went down even more when community members were taking care of it. (Meanwhile when the lot wasn't tended to, crime actually increased a little.)

Why does that matter? “It isn't that the grass is lower,” he said. “It's that people are paying attention and people care about the place.”

Major Joshua Judah of Louisville's police department echoed that sentiment. He spoke with me following a recent safety meeting my neighborhood called following a daylight rolling gun battle that left historic homes riddled with bullet holes.

“[In] communities that have a high level of social organization ... you have low levels of crime,” Major Judah said. And not just when it comes to group clean-up days like those our neighborhood association holds a few times a year. “Where people are hanging out on the front porch and walking to say hi to a neighbor … A predatory criminal notices when they're being watched. They go after the easiest target and don't want to be apprehended.”

“If you start taking back parts of a city,” Zimmerman said, “showing people in the neighborhood and in the city that there's somebody here paying attention and they care about the place, that is sending a message to all sorts of people.”

But, wait, isn't this just gentrification?

When we're talking about neighborhood change and beautifying, “a criticism that often comes up is gentrifying,” Zimmerman said.

“There's a big debate about this and I get it,” he said. “A lot of times there are neighborhoods, typically lower income, often people of color, and it's often displacement. What we're talking about is nothing close to that.”

Working toward busy streets through clean up and beautification, “it's very community engaged,” Zimmerman said. “To me [gentrification] is when developers come in and displace people and people don't have a voice. This greening work is much more localized. It's a [vacant] lot here, an abandoned home here. It's not development per se, it's community owned and community defined and community engaged.”

Now, “if the local efforts start to change a community to make it more desirable, that could attract developers and that could create a negative situation of gentrification,” he said. “What I say to that is to make sure community voices are heard. Make sure development is respectful of the history and who lives there. There are all sorts of things you can do to bring back a community that aren't gentrification. Who wants to live in a place where families [live in fear] — I hear this in Flint, 'when I hear gunshots I send my kids into the bathroom to lay down in the tub,'” he said. “We have to do better than this.”

Start with your own front door

Making a safer place to live can start at your own front (or back) door, literally. In addition to joining forces with neighbors, residents can take steps at home, too, Major Judah said. We're talking basics, but it takes everyone doing it.

“If at night every porch light is lit up you've got a well-lit street, whether you have street lights or not,” he said. “I have a floodlight out my back door and I have a pretty bright porch light and every single night I leave them on all night (I use LED). If everybody on the block does that particularly in a true urban neighborhood, that street's lit up. It makes less shadows for people to hang out.”

Have (and use!) quality locks, Major Judah said, and camera systems are also helpful, especially “the ones where you can actually see there's a camera, and even putting a sign out that says this house has an alarm and you're being videoed.” (We ponied up for Nest cameras after I spoke with the commander.)

The idea is that the opportunity for crime isn't at your house, nor at your neighbors', he said. “Sometimes that offender becomes less motivated to commit that crime and may not [even do it at all].”

When there is a concerted crime prevention in one neighborhood you have a diffusion of benefits into other areas.

While people are often concerned about pushing crime on down to the next neighborhood, “research doesn't support that,” he said. “It supports when there is a concerted crime prevention in one neighborhood you have a diffusion of benefits into other areas.”

“Criminals operate in areas they feel comfortable and know well,” he explained. “Think of a teenage kid breaking into cars — they know the escape route, they know where police will come from. If they can't operate there they have to be really motivated to go to another neighborhood where they don't have that information. Oftentimes they will do something else — or nothing.”

Doing nothing may be an option for them. But like my neighbor said, living in an urban community comes with responsibilities. Doing nothing isn't an option for us.

As humans , all of us live in a society are bound to a neighbourhood. It is an essential place which has a great impact on our lives. So much so that it does determine where we are in life and how we are doing. It is a fact that if we are not happy in our neighbourhood, we will not live peacefully. Through my neighborhood essay, I will explain about my neighbourhood and the reasons why I love it.

All About My Neighbourhood

I live in a great neighbourhood. It is wonderful because it offers us a lot of facilities. The green park near my house makes the area much more beautiful. Similarly, the swings in the park ensure the kids get to play cheerfully all day long.

Moreover, my neighbourhood also has many other bonuses. A grocery store adjacent to the park makes sure people get all their needs fulfilled without having to go far. All my neighbours buy their things from that grocery store only.

The owner also lives in the same area so he is very cordial with everyone. The grocery store saves everyone a long trip to the market and also their time. The park in my neighbourhood remains clean at all times.

The maintenance team makes sure they clean and sanitize it from time to time. It allows my neighbours to sit and relax in the evenings and take walks in the morning. The clean and fresh air gives everyone a great experience.

Why I Love My Neighbourhood

Apart from the top-notch facilities available in my neighbourhood, we also have amazing neighbours who make our lives better. A good neighbourhood is not made of facilities only but good people as well.

I got lucky in this case because my neighbours are very sweet. They help in maintaining the peace of the area so everyone lives in harmony. I have seen very often that if there is an emergency at anyone’s place, everyone rushes to help.

Similarly, we also organize events from time to time so that the whole neighbourhood gathers and enjoy themselves. I have a lot of friends in my neighbourhood with whom I play.

Most of them are my age so we meet every evening to cycle together and play on swings. We also go to each other’s birthday parties and sing and dance. The most favourite thing about my neighbourhood is definitely the residents.

I always notice how we never let any poor person go back empty-handed. My neighbourhood also organizes a donation drive every year. In this, each family donates clothes, toys and other useful commodities for the needy.

Thus, we all live together as a large family. Even though we live in different houses, our hearts are bounded by the same love and respect for each other.

Nowadays, there are so many theft has happen at our neighbourhood. This problem may make a bad thought about our neigbourhood. In my opinion, this problem should not happen to our peacefully neighbourhood. So, we have to overcome this problem before it getting worst. In this essay, I will discuss about the ways to overcome theft problem.

First and foremost, our neighbourhood seems really remote at night. This situation may be used by thieves to theft at our neighbourhood at night. So I think we should do a neighbourhood watch at night. For example, we recruit residents from our neighbourhood to do a neighbourhood watch. Therefore, if we do a neighbourhood watch every day, I really sure theft problems can be solved.

t-align: justify;">Next, we can secure our house by use a special lock. These kinds of stuff help a lot in secure our house from being broken. We also can use an alarm system for our car. This will prevent our car from being stolen by thieves. Hence, in my opinion alarm system and special lock can also be used to prevent theft.

Last but not least, based on my observation, our neighbourhood is very dark at night due to lack of light. In my opinion, we have to add some light resources. For example, we can switch on our house light. If we do so, the thieves will afraid to thefts at our house. Therefore, our house will safe from thefts.

In a nutshell, the three points I have suggested are the best ways to overcome theft problem.

My Midnight Robbery Experience

It was past midnight. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. I quickly switched on the lights. My instincts told me something was wrong. My mind quickly flew to my parents, who are currently at Grandma’s to settle some urgent family matters. Could something have happened to them? Is it the police who are knocking on my door? My palm quickly started to sweat with worry. My nose suddenly picked up a smell; it was an overpowering smell of beer.

My heart thumped repeatedly like horse hooves on a dirt road, giving signals to my brain to not open the door. I knew then, it was a premonition of fear and danger.

But my curiosity took over any sense that I ever had. True enough, my caution was justified, for when I opened the door, two tall brooding men about 6 feet high stood in front me. They looked too drunk to stay still, as if they were wearing some slippery boots.

I couldn’t make out their faces because it was too dark but I didn’t need to see their faces to know that they were men I should not cross. I kindly asked them to leave, but they continue to be in their drunken stupor and ignored me. They slurred swearing words towards me and my patience quickly trickled to an end and my anger rising to its peak.

I screamed to them quite rudely to leave, but I regretted at once the words that I had just then uttered. As if in reply to my rude screaming, the two men started to shout obscenities at me. Then all of a sudden, something sharp glistened in the dark coming from one of the men’s hand. It was a knife. I gulped in fear and judging from his strong muscles, he was indeed very strong. My brain screamed in panic and little beads of sweat formed on my forehead.

I went numb with thought, and stood frozen in front of the now two menacing men. The knife-man lunged and as quick as a bolt of lightning he had the point of his knife at my throat. I was wild with increasing fear and the feeling threatened to crush me down to a collapse. My face paled to ghastly whiteness and my heart pounded like the thrumming wings of a caged bird. I continue to stand there as if I was a monument frozen for eternity. I was stunned by all the suddenness of the events and before I knew it, I was held in a vice-like grip by the other man.

My heartbeat continued to thrum crazily against my ribcage and I hawked, my throat dry with fear. Reluctantly, I lead them to the drawer where my mum keeps her jewellery. I dread to think of how my mum would react after she finds out all her missing valuables that amount to thousands of dollars. The knife-man leaned over and made a grab for the trinkets. The other man momentarily forgot about me and went aside to the knife-man to also greedily swoon over all the glittery bracelets and necklaces. With sudden courage, I lifted my right hand to come down hard over the back of the knife-man.

The force of the blow succeeded in taking the man right down to hit the bedside table. There was a sickening thud as the head banged against the sturdy and hard surface of the table. He was severely injured with blood covering his face and lashes of cuts from the sharp point of the table. He was dropped unconscious. The other man screamed in rage and charged towards me and with quick swiftness I grabbed the perfume on the bedside table and sprayed it into his eyes. He shrieked in fury and agony and temporarily blind, started to sightlessly grab me.

I again took upon the chance to seize the chair near the work table and broke it over the man’s head. He fell down, statically still. He was dead. Twenty minutes flew by and the police were already herding the then unconscious (now conscious) man into the police car. My parents were back and were alerted with the frightening experience that I had just gone through. Though still shaken, I tried my best to give my statement to the police. My parents were dumbfounded when I told them in detail what had just happened, but when I finished, they smiled and expressed relief that I was not injured. All was well.

Just witnessed a robbery in my neighborhood

For the first time in my life I witnessed a robbery, in broad daylight! There was a young guy (mabye early 20's) sitting in front of my neighbors house across the street in his car. He had parked his car so it was blocking the driveway, and he sat in the car for an hour and a half. At first we didnt report it because my neighbors son is in his early 20's, so we thought mabye it was just his friend waiting in his car for him. Once an hour and a half passed by we knew something was up, as it appeared this guy was sniffing crack many times, and he just didnt look right, so we shut our doors and locked them. My Dad called the police on this suspicious behavior and made out a report, and they never even came. An hour passes by and the guy slowly gets out of his car, he starts walking around my neighbors front lawn dazed, and starts touching some statues. Then he proceeds to their backyard gate, and just stands there for 30 minutes hunched over, my Dad AGAIN called the police, but they still did not come! We then see the guy obviously looking into their backyard, we knew he wasnt a friend but a robber. He broke into the backyard and starts coming out carrying dog toys (they have a dog) and flowers/wreaths. He starts placing flowers and dog toys on my neighbors gate, the guy must be high or something, not to mention VERY DUMB robbing in broad daylight with your liscense and face exposed! My neighbors Dad comes home and sees the guy and confronts him, which is risky cause who knows if he has a gun? The guy said he was admiring my neighbors garden (as he proceeds to carry out more dog toys and random items from the yard) Finally he drops them and drives off in a hurry. Turns out my neighbors son was sleeping the whole time and didnt even know he was being robbed, luckily nobody was hurt and no valuables were taken. My neighbor reported the guy and we both were able to get a clear car description,license plate, and description of the "stupid" robber. After the guy circles back in his car TWICE down our block again, the cops finally arrived after a 3rd report made! The car plate doesnt match the model, and the plate is from Queens I think, meanwhile he was here on Long Island! I think the car is stolen. If only the cops had come in the TWO HOURS the guy was here, they would have got him! They still are unable to track him down! And I got most of this on video! But didnt show it unless the cops need it in the future I want to post it on YouTube cause the robber was so stupid and you cant see his face, but I think that would be illegal to do.

ok, well leave the gun part out, just say you gonna "shoot em" have your camera handy. no threat involved.  

It wouldn't be illegal to post a video you made of somebody who didn't live somewhere breaking in and taking stuff.

I bet if I said he is selling drugs they would have come quicker. To think he could have walked right in my neighbors house, went up the stairs, and if he was crazy with a gun shot my neighbors son, left, and nobody would have even known. And my neighborhood is supposedly a "neighborhood watch" community. Yeah right!

One of the most memorable experiences that, I have had in my neighborhood was the annual summer party. Every year, neighbors would gather on the street, grill food, play games, and socialize with one another. It was an opportunity to catch up with people we may not have seen in a while and meet new neighbors. The block party was a way for everyone in the neighborhood to come together and strengthen our community bonds.

Another unique feature of my neighborhood is the local small businesses. We have a family owned grocery store, mom and pop bakery and coffee shop that has been around for over 50 years. These companies not only provide their services to the community, but also create a sense of nostalgia and pride in our neighborhood.

In the following guide, I want to show you how to talk about your neighbourhood in English.

You might have to do this in the IELTS speaking test. It could be a topic that comes up in parts one, two or three. It could certainly come up in part one, as it is a topic where you are talking about your own life and life experience.

You could also be asked to talk about your neighbourhood in an interview or in an English conversation.

No matter where the subject may appear, talking about your neighbourhood in English should come very easy to you. You are talking about the place where you live and your surroundings, so this should come naturally to you.

But let’s go through all the steps so that you can talk about your neighbourhood fluently and with ease.

What is the Neighbourhood?

Your neighbourhood is the local area where you live. It is the place that is within walking distance of your home.

Your neighbourhood includes the local stores and shops that you might use regularly, the people who live near you (your neighbours) and other places that you see or visit. You might have lived in your neighbourhood all your life or just for a short time. Wherever you live right now, the surrounding area is your neighbourhood.

Things in your Neighbourhood

Depending on where you live, there could be different things in your neighbourhood to anyone else’s neighbourhood.

A local neighbourhood in a small town in England will be very different from a neighbourhood in India or Japan, for example.

But some things are the same.

Let’s take a look at the most common things you can find in many neighbourhoods around the world.

You should know most of these words. But if you don’t know any of the words, look them up in a dictionary and find out the correct meaning.

Write the meanings of any new words in your Vocabulary Notebook.

Let’s look at some ways to use the above words in a sentence.

Convenience Store — I go to my local convenience store about four times a week. I usually buy milk or some snacks there.

Supermarket — We have two large supermarkets near to where we live. They have everything we need for our daily lives.

Post Office — There is a small post office near my house. It’s small but it can take care of any deliveries.

Park — We have a nice park in our neighbourhood. It’s a nice little sanctuary in the middle of the city.

Local Shops — Our neighbourhood has many local shops. We can buy anything we need.

Houses — My neighbourhood is in the suburbs, so there are many houses here. It is a residential area.

Apartments — As we live in the city centre, most people in our neighbourhood live in apartments.

Police Station — We have a local police station in our neighbourhood, but it is always very quiet there. They mostly deal with people registering for permits or things like that.

Bus Stop — If I need to get into town, I have to take a bus. But there is a bus stop just down the road from my house.

Subway Station — There is a subway station in my neighbourhood. I take the subway to go to work every morning.

Cafe/Coffee Shop — I like to go to this coffee shop in my neighbourhood. They serve really great coffee all day, and it’s a nice place to sit down and read.

Restaurant — There’s a restaurant in my neighbourhood. It’s not exactly five stars, but the food they serve is very reasonably priced.

Clinic — We have a clinic just down the road. The doctors there are very helpful.

Hospital — There is a great hospital in my neighbourhood. I have not been there, but my grandfather had to go there recently.

Community Centre — We are very lucky to have a community centre nearby. They have free classes to learn different subjects. I go there for my yoga class.

Church — There’s a small church in my neighbourhood. I haven’t been inside, but on a Sunday morning, I always hear the church bells ringing.

Bakery — I love to eat freshly baked bread in the morning. And we are lucky in that we have a great baker in our neighbourhood. He always bakes fantastic bread first thing in the morning.

Gym — I go to my local gym about four times a week. It’s a great gym in our local community.

Shopping Centre/Mall — We have a shopping centre in our neighbourhood. It’s not very big, but it’s perfect for all of our needs. A few restaurants, a coffee shop and some other stores. Plus, there is a big supermarket.

Fire Station — We have a fire station in our neighbourhood. I have never seen a fire in our area, but it’s nice to know that we are protected if there is.

School — There’s a big high school in our area. That’s where I go to school.

Bank — We have a small bank in our community. There are only two tellers on duty — and one ATM — but it’s enough for the local people.

Grocery Store — There is a grocery store just down the road from my house. The man that owns it sells fresh vegetables and fruit.

Library — We have a small library nearby. They have a good selection of books and they also have computers for people to use and go online.

Adjectives to Describe your Neighbourhood

There are many ways to describe your neighbourhood.

Let’s look at some words we can use.

And this is how we can use some of these words when describing our neighbourhood.

I live in a typical working-class neighbourhood. It can be a little crowded at times, and the local community is densely populated, but it is very friendly.

My neighbourhood is very middle-class. There are many tree-lined streets and it is very clean. It is also safe at night and very quiet.

My neighbourhood is not very nice. It can be a little dangerous as there is a high crime rate, and it is also very noisy. The neighbours are always playing loud music or shouting.

I live in a suburban area on the outskirts of town. It is very quiet there and also spacious. The neighbours all know each other very well so it is very friendly.

I live in the business district of the city. It is very crowded here during the daytime, but also very convenient. Everything I need is very close by.

Try to use some of the words above to talk about your neighbourhood. Try to write a paragraph describing the local area where you live.

Your Neighbours

And every neighbourhood has people. And these people are your neighbours.

Let’s look at ways we can use these words in a sentence.

My next-door neighbour is very kind. If I need help doing something, he will always offer to help me.

One of my neighbours is very quiet and respectable. But the other neighbour is very noisy — they are always playing loud music late at night.

I have a neighbour who is very sociable. They always invite the other neighbours over to their place for a barbecue or some other party. But there’s another neighbour who is very shy. He doesn’t talk to anyone at all.

I have a really terrible neighbour — she is very nosy. Always interfering in other people’s business.

One of my neighbours is very elderly, so I try to help her out whenever I have time.

I live beside a big school. It’s a bit noisy in the morning when all the students are on their way to class.

We live next to a park. It’s really nice to walk around the park after dinner.

In front of our community is a big supermarket. It is very convenient, and it sells all the things we need for the house.

I live near to a subway station. I take the subway to go to work in the morning.

My neighbour opposite to our house borrowed my lawnmower. Now he won’t give it back!

There are many small shops nearby to where we live. They sell all kinds of things.

We have many trees around our neighbourhood. It’s so nice to see greenery.

There’s a little coffee shop down the road from my house. I like to go there at the weekend.

We have a small library between two of the houses on our street. They have a nice selection of books.

There’s a great convenience store round the corner. I probably go there about six times a week!

We have a gym over the road from our house. I am not a member, but I hear it is very good.

There’s a railway line behind my house. It can be very noisy at times when the trains go past.

Talking about my Neighbourhood

It’s a good idea to look at how people talk about their neighbourhoods. We can copy certain elements and phrases and use them as our own.

Take a look at the following people talking about their neighbourhoods.

Use whatever useful phrases or sentences you like and adapt them to your own style and needs.

I live in a very quiet neighbourhood and my neighbours don’t really talk to each other. Sometimes it feels too quiet here. But there is a street nearby with lots of shops and small restaurants. I like to go there when I have time. There’s also a big park — it’s really nice to go there and walk around among all the trees and plants. But when I get home everything feels very quiet as the neighbours are not very sociable.

I live in a very convenient area of the city, but it is very noisy. Just in front of where we live is a street filled full of cafes and bars. At the weekend, it gets very rowdy. But my neighbourhood is full of life — there is always something to do here.

We live in a really vibrant neighbourhood. It is bustling with people and has many great restaurants and shops nearby. I guess you could say it is a desirable area to live. And it is very convenient. There is a subway station nearby that has three lines. So I can get to any part of the city from here very easily.

I live in a quiet little neighbourhood. It is just outside a small town and far from the main shops and supermarkets and things. We have two neighbours on either side of us but there is nothing else here. Because we are practically in the countryside.

We live in a high-rise building downtown. Inside our apartment, it is pretty quiet. But once you go downstairs and on to the street, it gets pretty busy. There is always a big crowd of people milling around on the street. Plus, there are many shops, so there are lots of people going in and out of the shops.

We live near to this huge park. It’s great as we have two dogs and we can take the dogs to the park so they can run around. The other neighbours also take their dogs to the park and it can be a wonderful sight to see all the dogs playing and running with each other.

Talking about your neighbourhood should be easy. It is the place where you live, so you should have plenty to say about it.

But for English learners, they often have no idea what to say exactly.

If you go through all the steps in this guide, you will find that you can build a great introduction to your own neighbourhood and talk extensively about where you live.
