How do Frontier’s seat assignment fees work?

When you go to book a basic fare on Frontier, you’ll have the option of picking a seat for a fee.

The seat selection screen looks like this — the first few rows are sold at a premium price relative to the rows in the back:

You can choose one of these seats for the price listed. But you don’t have to. Just scroll to the bottom of the page, and click the “Continue” button.

On the next page, you’ll get another prompt from Frontier asking you to confirm that you don’t want to select a seat. At that point you’ll choose the “No, thanks, I’ll take whatever” option.

Note that if you choose to book an economy, premium, or business fare bundle — which start at $30, $50 and $100, respectively — seat selection will be included for no extra fee (beyond what you pay for the bundle)

What if I don’t pay for seat selection?

Not selecting a seat doesn't mean you won’t get one, it just means that Frontier will assign one to you at check-in or at the gate. This means you’re much more likely to get put in a middle seat, near the back.

So when deciding whether to pay for seat selection, ask yourself: Is the cost of selecting a seat worth it to avoid sitting in the middle? If not, you can skip it and save some cash.

Families who want to sit together might consider paying for seat selection to avoid getting split up, though gate agents will often work to keep families together.

What is Frontier stretch seating?

Most seats on Frontier Airlines flights have between 28 and 31 inches of pitch, which is the distance from the back of your seat to the back of the seat in front of you. That’s slightly below the average pitch of 30 to 31 inches found on other airlines.

Frontier Airlines stretch seating comes with an extra five to seven inches of pitch. These seats also recline, unlike the other seats, and they offer bigger tray tables.

Frontier typically offers five or six rows of stretch seating on its aircraft, including the exit rows.

How much does Frontier Airlines stretch seating cost?

The cost of Frontier Airlines stretch seating depends on a couple of different factors, most notably how long the flight is and when you book.

On some flights, stretch seating starts at $16 for each leg. On longer flights that you book later, this perk can cost well over $56. You'll have to check your individual flights for specific pricing as it varies by route and length.

If you have a connecting flight, you’ll need to pay for stretch seating for each leg of your flight.

If you want to pick any seat while flying on Frontier, you’re going to pay something (either à la carte or as part of a fare bundle), so take that into account when deciding if the stretch seating option is worth it for you.

What about Frontier Airlines first class?

Since Frontier is a low-cost carrier, it doesn’t offer a first class option. If you’re looking for something better than a regular seat, you’ll want to purchase stretch seating when booking your flight.

You’ll get perks like more legroom, extra recline and early boarding.

How to get Frontier seat assignments for free

There are a couple of ways that you can get Frontier Airlines stretch seating for free.

1. Earn elite status

Frontier Elite 20K status lets you pick a seat for free and you can pick stretch seating for free when you check in. If you have Elite 50K or Elite 100K status, you can pick stretch seating for free when you buy the tickets and you get family seating, which allows up to eight passengers on the same reservation to pick any seat, including stretch seating, at the time of purchase.

2. Use credit card statement credits to offset Frontier seat fees

Another way you can get Frontier Airlines stretch seating for (sort of) free is to use airline incidental credits from an American Express card. These cards pay you back (in the form of a statement credit) when you purchase certain airline incidentals, including seat selection, up to a certain limit every year. It is important to note that the charge must be classified as seat selection and not an upgrade to get the credit. Terms apply.

You have to select your preferred airline at the beginning of the year, or when you sign up, so if you have one of these cards and want to use the credit for Frontier Airlines perks, be sure to select it as your preferred airline.

The fare you purchase will determine if your seat (and what type of seat) is included. A basic fare does not include complimentary seat assignments. This means you have two options: Pay for a seat or skip seat selection. By skipping seat selection, you might get stuck in a middle seat or separated from your party — but it’s free. Frontier also offers “stretch seating” with extra legroom for an extra charge. Economy fares include a standard seat, premium fares include a premium seat and business fares include an UpFront Plus seat.

Is paying for seats worth it on Frontier Airlines?

How I Scored The Best Seat On A Frontier Redeye For Free

Frontier Airlines is a whole different kind of animal. Or so claimed  their marketing campaign  way back in 2003. That was back when they were sort of a quirky regional airline that managed to attract a loyal following among the anti-corporate crowd common to the mountain west. They went head-to-head with United in Denver for years, becoming equally famous for the lovable animals on the tails of their planes and the chocolate chip cookies baked in their onboard ovens.

Nowadays, Frontier is still an animal. But instead of that cuddly koala, they are now more like a raccoon or opossum that skitters around the edges of civilization, tipping over trash cans in search of a meal made from someone else’s leftovers. That’s because Frontier’s current strategy is to dart in and out of juicy markets that were once dominated by the legacies. If a route works after a few months, they keep it. If not, they pack up shop and head elsewhere. For sure, they offer some incredible fares, but then try to sell you everything and the kitchen sink along the way. 

I’ve flown Frontier a few times, but certainly not much. As a United Premier 1K, I’m willing to pay a little more for my ticket since it will come with an Economy Plus seat, the chance at an upgrade, more valuable miles, and better protection in the case of travel snafus.

But even I have my price.

And for a recent work trip to the east coast, Frontier was offering a fare that was several hundred dollars less than United, even when I included the $30 fee I’d have to pay to check a bag. Sure the schedule sucked — a redeye leaving after midnight — but for that kind of savings, I figured I could survive.

Seat assignments on Frontier

For my flight, Frontier wanted an extra $12 to select a seat in the back of the plane. Or I could pay $24 to select a regular seat towards the front. Or $40 for an extra legroom seat in the first couple of rows or the exit. It’s possible that Frontier offers a few middle seats in the back for free, but I didn’t see any on my flight.

As much as the extra space seemed nice, my thinking was that if you’re gonna go cheap — and I was most assuredly going cheap on this trip — you gotta go all-in. Plus, I was leaving my wife and three young kids at home for once, meaning that even the middle seat next to the lav was going to seem like a spa compared to constantly adjusting someone’s tablet or opening endless packages of string cheese.

At the time I bought my ticket — about a month in advance — the seat map showed the plane was mostly empty. I mistakenly took this to mean that the flight was lightly booked, which seemed to make sense considering this was a miserable redeye leaving at 1:20 AM on a Sunday morning. I wish I had taken a screen shot of the seat map at the time, but basically there were just a smattering of occupied seats in the $12 section, with almost no one in the premium seats.

Anyway, I decided to save the $12 and take my chances. 

Frontier’s online check-in opened 24 hours prior to departure

As the day of the departure approached, I periodically checked the seat map to see if my gambit was going to pay off. The back of the plane definitely had a few more seats occupied than before, but still not that many.

But then when check-in rolled around, the back started to fill rapidly. That’s because Frontier automatically assigns seats to those who haven’t paid for a seat assignment — and apparently that includes just about everyone. I’m not sure what the seat allocation algorithm looks like, but I imagine they more or less go front to back handing out the $12 seats, all the while hoping they can entice a few folks to buy-up to the premium seats.

By perhaps midday on Saturday — 12 hours from departure — all of the cheap seats were taken. But the $24 seats were mostly available. I started to realize that this flight was not nearly as empty as I had hoped. A quick check on the Frontier website indicated that they weren’t even selling tickets for it anyone. Ruh roh .

But I still didn’t see much benefit to completing check-in. I mean, if I’m just going to end up in a middle seat, it might as well be in the front of the plane.

So I stuck to the strategy of monitoring the seat map, but not actually checking in.

Coming down to the wire

As I left for the airport, nearly all of the $12 and $24 seats were occupied. Two $12 seats momentarily became available as you’ll see below, but they soon filled as well.

By the time I got to the airport, the only seat on the entire flight that was open was an exit row aisle. I was sure hoping it had my name on it.

I decided it couldn’t get any better, so I decided to finally take my shot and completed check-in, now barely an hour before departure. I held my breath as the app displayed my boarding pass — I had been assigned seat number “0.”  Did that mean I got to sit in the cockpit?

Actually, I figured that meant I still had a chance at assigned that awesome exit row seat. Or it might mean I’d be the first passenger to get involuntarily denied boarding (since I didn’t have a seat assignment and was flying on a rock-bottom fare). It would be feast or famine.

A few minutes later I arrived at the counter, ready to check my bag. The friendly agent chatted a bit, typed, and then asked if I could lift 35 pounds. I hadn’t been to the gym that week, but assured him I could. He then handed me boarding pass for seat 13 D, the exit row aisle. Arguably the best seat on the plane.

But now I was curious. How close had I come to getting IDB’ed? The agent said the flight was overbooked by two. And he had just assigned me the last seat. He said he hoped the two guys behind me weren’t going to Philly. (I think they were.)

In the end, I presume everyone got on since the exit row aisle across from me remained empty. In fact, I think that was the only empty seat on the plane.

Bottom Line

By waiting until all of the regular seats had been assigned, I was able to game the Frontier seat allocation algorithm to score a $40 exit row seat for free.

This strategy isn’t without risk, however, as I imagine that I might have been one of the first passengers to be denied boarding should the flight have ended up oversold since I didn’t have a seat assignment. But given that I didn’t need to be in Philadelphia until the following day anyway, I figured it was worth the risk.

Just got to the gate I checked in at 2 this morning and got seat 11f I'm told they are overbooked by 10 people though; looks like a full flight for sure. Nov 21 2023

It's better to check in as soon as possible. That way I never got middle seats and once got 30A with no seat in front, which was the best!

I just did on-line checkin for myself, my wife, and adult son about 17.5 hours before departure. Our assigned seats weren't as bad as I expected. We got seats 19a, 19b, and 19 E. So my wife got a window and my son was in the middle, across the aisle but still in the same row. I suppose if we waited much closer to flight departure we might have got a seat way up front,...

I just checked in about 7 1/2 ish hours early for my frontier flight philly to fl we got assigned seats 2b and 2f. One is a middle but i have never sat this close to the front of a plane. I'm excited, but nervous hopefully they honor the seats they gave us!

Here's a question for you. Say I check in and get my assigned seat. Is there any way to switch to another seat without paying a fee on Frontier? Most airlines typically allow you to switch once the 24 hour window is open, but I'm not sure about Frontier.

If you're gunning for one of the top seats on the plane, if you're traveling solo (or don't care if you and others on your booking are split up), and if you can tolerate the risk of pushing it too far and being denied boarding on an oversold plane, the strategy detailed here seems like a good one.

For my flight tomorrow, I checked in sometime within say ½ an hour of check-in window opening and was assigned a seat in the middle of the plane (row 15 of 30) with dozens and dozens of empty seats behind me--and crucially, priced less than my seat would have been: my seat is directly in front of several rows where they are charging $21 for aisle and window seats, indicating this is at least how much my aisle seat would have been sold for, yet there are about a dozen rows farther back on the plane where the aisle and window seats are priced at $17. So not only did they not place me nearly as far back as they could have, they didn't even place me into a seat for which they would otherwise charge the lowest possible price. Now, I didn't get an exit row seat, but my point is that I'm nowhere near the back of the plane. As to my earlier mention that delaying check in may be counterproductive: the vast majority of the seats available on this plane are behind mine and if this flight is anywhere near full, that means that people checking in after me are the ones who are going to be sitting there, meaning delaying check in here results not in sitting farther forward in the plane but in sitting farther back in the plane.

Also, it's worth noting that they gave my wife and I seats together. As they say, your mileage may vary, but if you're booked together with others and wish to sit together, I recommend an earlier, not a later check in because my experience (again, limited experience) indicates that if the seats together are available they may give them to you. But clearly, if you wait so long to check in that seats together aren't even available then they obviously can't give them to you.

My wife is flying on Frontier from Philadelphia tonight and we, also, decided to take our chances on seat assignment since she is traveling alone. Somehow, she snagged 13C. We’re not sure how but, better lucky than smart, I suppose!

Waiting to board now and snagged seat 2B... an $83 seat. Woop woop.

Kiosk check-in does cost extra. In the app/on their site, I can view the seat map by acting like I want to pay to reserve a seat.

Read this post and tried this. Was a little stressed because I was worried that the flight would be overbooked, resulting in me not getting a seat period. I kept refreshing the seat chart in the last 10 min before online check-in ended, and to my pleasure, I could see all the seats being filled back to front while leaving all the stretch seats for last. Checked in the last few minutes and scored a stretch-window seat that would’ve cost me an extra $60 otherwise :)

I think waiting until the end works if your traveling alone. However, if you are traveling as a family (with kids) it's best to check in as early as possible if you have purchased your seats in advance.

I checked in right at the 24 hour mark and was able to get 5 seats together, same row. They are in the back of the plane but sitting together is more important to me, not to mention having the restroom close is sure to be a winner. Glad I didn't fall for the upcharge this year.

This worked for me. I checked in an hour before departure time and scored a $45 seat in Row #1.

Flew Frontier from Orlando to New Orleans back in August, there were 5 of us, 3 adults, 2 children. I checked us in right at 24 hours prior to departure and got 5 seats togehter in the same row both ways. We even got TSA Pre both ways.

Getting ready to travel on Frontier with hubby and child (10 yrs old). Feeling a little nervous about seating arrangement as I have read everywhere that there is no guarantee sitting together. I am not concerned about sitting next to hubby as much as I am concerned that my child may have to sit alone possibly in between two strangers. Any suggestions, strategies, etc. to calm my nervous mind? Please know we are totally inexperienced...

Unless you are that one of the two pax who are overbooked and they cannot assign you a seat number.

Anyone has any experience to share on this?

Prior to the 24hr before departure, the non-preferred seat selections were $12 and $13. Within the 24hr before departure, the price increases... $13->$17, $45->$50 for exit aisle. The carry on baggage changed: $38->$40. I wouldn't be surprised if it bumps up more as the departure time gets closer.

Months after reading this, I booked a flight with my fiance. He's not usually like this, but when he saw me the day before asked if I'd checked in and - I'm going to admit it - I was annoyed by the reminder about something that I didn't think mattered. So I said "I like to check in late because you can get better seats that way." Thanks Travis for the conversational ammo :-|

It was a connecting flight and we did get better than expected seats on the first leg. Whatever they call the seats they try to up-sell to you, we sat in those. On the second leg we didn't have seat assignments so had to go to the gate; it looked like we wouldn't sit together. I was almost contrite. Then the gate agent said "oh are you together?" and re-issued seats that were fine.

I guess it makes sense that they assign the up-sell seats last to regular-price customers. I'm surprised though that this airline gave us nice seats together instead of shitty middle-seats-not-next to each other. I'm fairly sure that United would have done the latter.

This is the way to get seats together on Spirit or at least guarantee an aisle seat (or window, whatever your preference). I'm optimistic that regular Spirit flyers are not reading this blog, so I won't complain too much. I only fly them MCI-LAS; hard to beat RT's in the range of $48-72.

A little trick I've done on Spirit many times is to check in and get your seat assignment but wait to be the very very last person to board the plane. When you step on the plane quickly scan to the exit rows to see if there are seats open and head right to them and sit down. They don't know the wiser and I've scored an amazing seat.

Ive done this strategy before. JetBlue didnt have any decent seats and I didnt choose a seat. I asked at the gate for a seat and got the window exit row seat.

This also works with legacy carriers really well. All the elites get the best seats on the flight to start bc they can select for free. A few of these elites are likely to get upgraded and then their seats will be open. Ill ask for exit row when I get to airport and its usually available at the gate.

So in balance i prefer my strategy of being as close to SEQ001 as possible so that I get assigned a window or aisle seat.

Recently I flew AA. From booking the ticket until check in, there were no free seats that I'd want to sit in. At check in, I was assigned one of their "preferred" seats (main cabin, closer to the front of the plane but not main cabin extra) with priority boarding.

I had some similar methods over the years. Nice to see a post about this topic.

Similar experience with Ryanair. If you check in at exactly T-24hr they fill in back to front. I got Row 33 many times which is by far the best row (last row) because Ryanair boards back to front and often times opens both doors for disembark. First one on, first one off. Perfect. The only catch is you have to know your airports because at major airports like my home base Madrid, they use gates to board so getting off might be a problem.

@Travis. I do it with spirit all the time. I dont check in online but at the kiosk. If u check in 2 hours or 2.5 hours. Before the flight at the aipprt it assigns you seat from the front i always get the first row or regular seats. In spirit i have also gotten the big front seat with your method half the time. I was recently on an Easyjet flight.Checked in about 36 hours before the flight and was assigned an extra legroom exit row seat. As there were 3 of us in that row, I was requested to go to the other side which was empty. So I ended up with a full row of extra legroom exit row.....

Still overpriced. My sympathies

Just got to the gate I checked in at 2 this morning and got seat 11f I'm told they are overbooked by 10 people though; looks like a full flight for sure. Nov 21 2023

It's better to check in as soon as possible. That way I never got middle seats and once got 30A with no seat in front, which was the best!

I just did on-line checkin for myself, my wife, and adult son about 17.5 hours before departure. Our assigned seats weren't as bad as I expected. We got seats 19a, 19b, and 19 E. So my wife got a window and my son was in the middle, across the aisle but still in the same row. I suppose if we waited much closer to flight departure we might have got a seat way up front, or maybe bumped. I don't know if our flight is overbooked or not. But we paid $0 for each seat assignment. I wasnt going to pay for an exact seat since I already bought the airline tickets.

Frontier suddenly assigning seats before check-in?

I've flown with Frontier a lot for the past few years, and this is the first time this has ever happened. Usually, my experience is that the sooner you check in, the better the seat you are randomly assigned is (ie, closer to front, window, etc.). Even the text on the website says that they will still assign you a seat at check in. Today, I get an email about three days before my flight, saying they assigned my seat to a middle seat in the back of the plane.

I'm honestly quite surprised, considering 85% of the plane is still open and only the back window and middle seats are assigned. Has anyone else experienced this recently?

Basic Fare: Frontier’s basic fare is just that: basic.   This option covers getting you from Point A to Point B in a standard seat with 1 personal item.

Frontier’s the WORKS and the PERKS   options are “bundles.” What’s a bundle, you ask?

Frontier conveniently bundles extras together and offers them to you at a discounted rate in 2 different tier options.

The WORKS is Frontier’s top-tier bundle . The cost starts at $59 one-way  and varies by route; it’s also based on a round-trip purchase.

Since Frontier is a low-cost airline that lists fares accordingly, you can expect some extra fees related to your trip, unless, of course, you’re the type who can fly comfortably in any seat with only a personal item.

Instead of hiding the add-ons, Frontier gladly explains why it keeps fares so low — to give customers a choice: “You only pay for what’s important to you.”

Baggage Fees

If you purchased the WORKS or the PERKS bundle, you already have 1 carry-on bag and 1 checked bag included in the cost.   If you didn’t purchase either bundle, you can expect to incur higher  baggage fees .

Baggage fees increase the closer you get to boarding , so you should purchase your allowance as soon as possible (ideally, at booking).

*Prices are per one-way flight.

If you purchase a carry-on bag, you’ll automatically gain Zone 1 boarding. 

Size/Weight Limits:  Frontier has the following size and weight limitations for each type of baggage:

• Personal: 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45.72 x 35.56 x 20.32 cm)
• Standard: 24 x 16 x 10 inches (60.96 x 40.64 x 20.32 cm) and no heavier than 35 pounds (15.88 kg)

Other Fees and Add-Ons

Seat Selection:  Frontier encourages all passengers to choose their seats at the time of booking. If you purchased the WORKS or the PERKS bundle, you will not have to pay an additional fee for seating.

If you purchased a Basic Fare and didn’t pay to choose your seat, Frontier will assign you a seat from what’s left at check-in.

Frontier makes no guarantees about seating your party together if you don’t prepurchase seats.

For Frontier elite members, seat assignment fees are waived and upgrades to Stretch seating are free if available at the time of check-in. 

Call Center Reservations:  $35 per passenger for bookings made through the call center

Paper Receipt/Itinerary:  Undisclosed amount; Frontier reports a fee will be charged for any paper itineraries or receipts by mail.

Itinerary Change: If you change your flight 60+ days prior to departure, you will incur no costs to do so. If you need to change your flight 59 to 7 days prior to departure, you will incur a reduced fee of $49 per passenger. If you need to cancel or change your flight 6 days or less prior to departure, you will incur the normal fee of $99 per passenger. These fees are not applicable to passengers who have booked the WORKS, which offers free itinerary changes.

Name Change:  $75 per person plus any fare difference between the fare already paid and the current fare for the same itinerary at the time the name change is processed.

What will your Frontier flight look like? Let’s get into the seat specs and inflight amenities.

Frontier has 3 seat types on its planes, Standard, Premium, and UpFront Plus. Seat pitch and width vary slightly depending on which plane you’re on, but it can get pretty tight! Additionally, these seats do not recline.

• Premium (all planes): 36″ pitch (rows 1 to 3), 38″ pitch (row 13), about 18″ width
• Standard A320 (V1 and V2): 28″ to 29″ pitch, 17″ to 19″ width
• Standard A321 (V1 and V2): 28″ to 29″ pitch, 16.5″ to 19″ width

UpFront Plus is a relatively new seating configuration that mimics the European business class model with the middle seat blocked.

The following table is a breakdown of seating on each Frontier aircraft model:

Most Frontier Airlines seats have very tight pitch — actually, the tightest in the airline industry (see table below).

When you combine a 28- to 29-inch pitch with a 16.5-inch width as experienced on some A321 seats, it makes for a pretty tight fit. Plus, most of the seats have tiny tray tables.

Inflight Amenities

Since Frontier is a low-cost airline, many of the inflight amenities passengers have come to expect on other more popular airlines are absent:

• Frontier does not provide inflight Wi-Fi, video streaming capabilities, or any type of onboard entertainment at this time.
• Refreshment service is limited to paid beverages and snacks only.
• Frontier does not have electrical outlets onboard for passenger/commercial product use.

Are people happy with their Frontier flights? That depends.

Of course, there are numerous complaints due to the general lack of research into what you actually get for your money with a low-cost airline. Anyone who knows the basic low-cost structure will know to expect extra costs (or a pared-down experience).

Frontier openly advertises how it’s able to keep its fares low, so there shouldn’t be any surprises. However, it is a bit tough to calculate what your total cost is going to be until you reach the final steps in your booking process.

In December 2023, the last full month of data collected, Frontier canceled 76 flights, delayed 910 flights, and diverted 22 flights (likely due to weather). Also, 3,335 bags were mishandled.

Consumer Rankings and Ratings

Here’s how Frontier Airlines stacks up on popular rankings and rating systems:

ACSI Rating  (American Customer Satisfaction Index): 67% (Eighth place out of the 10 largest U.S. carriers for the 12-month period ending February 2024)

Kayak Customer Rating : 6.3/10 (of 4,473 verified reviews)

Safety and Performance

Frontier Airlines has a 7/7 safety record as awarded by  AirlineRatings.com . The rating considers whether the airline has an IATA Operational Safety Audit Certification and combines government and crash records along with information from the World’s Aviation Governing Body.

In terms of performance, the February 2024 Air Travel Consumer Report states that for 2023, Frontier Airlines was on time 66.99% of the time.

This places Frontier in last place out of 10 airlines in terms of On-Time Performance (OTP). In comparison, the top airline was Hawaiian, arriving on time 94.07% of the time.

Regardless of poor OTP and decreased customer satisfaction scores, Frontier Airlines has received a couple of notable awards:

• Federal Aviation Administration’s Diamond Award for Maintenance Excellence – 2016
• International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) – The Industry’s Most Fuel Efficient Airline

On many lists, Frontier sits right down at the bottom (alongside fellow low-cost carrier Spirit) as one of the worst airlines out there.

Is this mainly due to complaints surrounding low transparency with tons of added fees? Or is it more serious than that, concerning worsening customer satisfaction in regards to flight problems (delays and cancellations) and baggage handling?

Either way, the chance you’ll be satisfied with your Frontier flight seems like a toss-up, and it likely depends on your personality and expectations.

If you like all the perks included with your ticket, plan to check a couple of bags, and want a comfortable flight in terms of seating, then Frontier is not for you unless you plan to pay quite a bit more than its advertised base fares.

However, if you’re not bothered by a bare-bones flight, don’t have bags to check, and are OK with some customer satisfaction hiccups, then you could certainly score a pretty cheap flight from Frontier.

Here’s how an airline that charges for all seat assignments will keep families seated together

On the heels of United Airlines' recent announcement about family seating , ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines said it is now also seating children with a parent at no additional charge. This makes the carrier the latest airline to enact a travel policy that allows families to sit together.

The Denver-based carrier said on Tuesday that it allows children under the age of 14 to be seated automatically with at least one parent or guardian at no additional charge.

Typically, Frontier charges a fee for all seat assignments . However, under this new measure, the airline said it would assign seats based on family members' ages before the check-in window opens.

"We recognize the importance of seating children next to an adult with whom they are traveling," said Daniel Shurz, senior vice president, commercial, of Frontier Airlines.

Shurz said Frontier had been working on this policy and enhancing its systems since October to better ensure that families can sit together on flights, adding that the "system is working well, and we are receiving positive feedback."

Additionally, Frontier said families with Discount Den membership can use its Kids Fly Free promotions for select flights if they have children who are under 14 years old.

Frontier follows in the footsteps of United Airlines in announcing policies that make it easier for families to be seated together. United said Monday that it would let families with children under the age of 12 sit together for free in its economy cabins.

Breeze Airways has said that it has always allowed families to sit together for free on its flights.

Southwest Airlines — which is notorious for its open seating policy — seems to have been quietly experimenting with its family travel policy. It allows families with children under the age of 13 to be a part of a family boarding process to make sure that families have a better chance at choosing seats that are next to each other.

However, the official Southwest policy is still that families with children under the age of 6 board between its A and B boarding groups.

The recent focus on family seating comes after President Joe Biden admonished airlines for charging additional fees to allow children to sit with their families, touting that his administration will enact more consumer protections.

The Department of Transportation's existing policy already encourages airlines to keep families seated together to the extent possible without charging extra fees to seat children under the age of 13 with a parent or guardian.

"Baggage fees are bad enough — they can't just treat your child like a piece of luggage," Biden said in his State of the Union address Feb. 7.

Budget carriers like Frontier Airlines can strike fear in the heart of travelers for knee-crunching legroom, uncomfortable seats, and fees that can instantly outweigh what was once a cheap ticket. But this ultra-low-cost carrier has its place: Do it right, and it's a nice (and cheap) flight.

That was my takeaway after flying Frontier for the first time on a quick, bleary-eyed morning flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to Denver (DEN) recently. The seats certainly won't win any awards for comfort, but the legroom was surprising … and believe it or not, I mean that in a good way. And while you'll pay a hefty price to pick your seat or bring anything bigger than a backpack with you, whether you pay an extra $100 or $0 is up to you.

Will I fly Frontier again? I won't go out of my way to hop onboard one of their animal-emblazoned jets – especially if I need to bring some baggage or work for a few hours from the skies. But unlike many travelers who swear they'll never set foot on this budget carrier, I won't take pains to avoid them, either.

It's all about expectations. So read on for our full Frontier Airlines review.

Booking Frontier Flights

The trip with Frontier started long before getting on the plane. The experience of booking a ticket with Frontier Airlines is an adventure, filled with surprising twists and turns you won't find on many (if any) other airlines.

To be perfectly clear, everything went smoothly while booking my Frontier ticket from Minneapolis to Denver. But during the booking process, how many other airlines will:

• Charge more for a carry-on bag, checking a bag, or even many seat assignments than the cost of the ticket itself?
• Offer you a free, one-time change for an extra 99 cents?
• Try to give you a bunch of coupons for free or discounted razors, Hello Fresh food deliveries, or a Walmart+ subscription after checkout?

Much like any other ultra-low-cost carrier, there's one key thing to keep in mind when booking Frontier: The cost of your ticket might seem cheap at first, but the fees add up – and they add up fast. In fact, Frontier makes more revenue collecting fees on bags, seats, and early boarding than it does actually selling plane tickets.

That's exactly how they do it. By unbundling things like seat selection, baggage, priority boarding, and even drinks, Frontier can offer cheap fares while making more money on a handful of different fees. Think of it like  basic economy fares  on the major U.S. airlines, just on steroids.

In my case, it started with a $49 one-way fare from Minneapolis to Denver booked just two weeks before departure – a route that sometimes sinks as low as $29 or even $19 each way. It's easy to search for Frontier flights on Google Flights and click through to begin the checkout process with Frontier.

But right off the bat, Frontier tried to upsell me on various bundles that included bags, free seat assignment, early boarding, and other perks … for double or nearly triple the price of my ticket. I passed and went the a la carte route.

From there, it was time to select seats. Frontier was charging anywhere from $19 for a seat at the back of the plane to as much as $55 for a “Stretch” seat with some extra legroom at the front of the plane. If you need a seat assignment, it's wise to pick one and pay up during the checkout process: Seat fees increase after you book. Otherwise, you can roll the dice and get assigned a seat for free at check-in.

Oddly, Frontier was charging  more for middle seats than for those along the windows or aisles … because on many of its planes, those middle seats are actually a bit wider. No matter: I went with an aisle seat in the middle of the plane for an extra $25.

Flying Frontier, the only thing you can bring onboard for free is a personal item – like a backpack or purse – that you can stow underneath the seat in front of you. Adding a checked bag or even a carry-on to your reservation will cost you dearly: In my case, adding any bag to my flight was more than the ticket itself. Paying $69 or more each way for a bag is steep, especially compared to the $30 or $35 standard on major U.S. carriers like American and Delta.

I kept things simple and skipped a bag. At every turn, Frontier tries one last time to upsell you on these additional fees, warning that adding a bag after completing the checkout process will cost even more.

The fees don't end there. Frontier also offered a free one-time change for 99 cents – though it may be higher on other flights – as well as the option to add priority boarding for another $7.99.

And there was yet another last-ditch attempt to add something extra, like a rental car and what Frontier calls “Agent Assistance” – a $20 fee for having a Frontier agent check you in and print your boarding pass at the airport. Pass.

I was traveling light and didn't need much, so I was able to book my one-way ticket to Denver with a seat assignment and a one-time free change – why not? – added in for a grand total of just under $75. That's not bad at all … but you have to do the math for yourself. If you need to bring a carry-on bag and pick a seat with extra legroom, those extra fees flying Frontier could easily push the cost of your ticket over the likes of flying Delta, American, United, or Southwest.

Checking In & Boarding

Don't procrastinate when flying Frontier. And definitely don't get to the airport late.

As of Aug. 16, Frontier will close its check-in counters and bag drop one hour before each flight's departure . That's substantially earlier than most airlines, who give travelers a 30- to 45-minute window before domestic flights. So whether you need a paper boarding pass or just have to check your bag, you'll want to get to the airport earlier before a Frontier flight.

Traveling light or checking in online or via a smartphone app, like me? You should be set. Checking in through Frontier's app and adding my boarding pass to my Apple Wallet was a cinch.

Flying in and out of Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP), you'll need to pay close attention to the terminal. Frontier now operates out of the airport's smaller Terminal 2, a move it made a few years ago.

Frontier flies a fleet of Airbus A320s and A321s, each emblazoned with an animal on the tail and a corresponding name. Our A321 – dubbed “Joe Bob the Badger” – was ready and waiting at the gate for our bright-and-early departure to Denver.

Frontier handles its boarding process differently than most airlines – and it's all about how the airline enforces its “don't you dare bring a carry-on bag onboard unless you paid for it” policy. Zone 1 boarding is solely for passengers who have paid to bring a carry-on bag.  After that, Zone 2 through Zone 5 is for the rest of the passengers bringing just a personal item on board.

There were sizers at the gate for both personal items and full-size carry-ons, and the gate agent did not hesitate to use them to ensure no bags were too big.

With just a handful of passengers boarding in Zone 1 and stowing carry-on bags overhead, boarding went pretty quickly.

Frontier Airlines Cabin & Seats

Like all budget airlines, Frontier Airlines packs a lot  of seats on its planes. Maximizing passengers is the name of the game.

In all, there are a whopping 230 seats onboard this Frontier A321. Compare that to the 191 seats Delta installs on the exact same planes, and you can immediately tell that Frontier squeezed in as many seats as it could.

The cabin is about as basic as it gets, with black leather seats, gray seatbacks, and … not much else. But hey, it's a cheap ride to get you where you need to go!

Really, the only differentiation in the cabin is in the “Stretch” seats at the front of the plane and in the exit row, which are in jet-black leather with some patterned cross-stitching to set them apart from the rest of the plane. There are three rows of these extra legroom seats at the front of the cabin and another, single exit row – each sporting a few extra inches of legroom for an additional fee.

The rest of the 200-some seats throughout the plane were largely identical, with plain gray leather and a few details here and there.

The seats themselves are … well, they're there. They exist. They're upright. They have a place to put your butt, a back to lean against, and a seat belt to keep you strapped in.

That's about all you can say about these seats, which are about as unforgiving as it gets. Aside from some leather and a  bit of padding, there's not much to separate this from a standard wooden dining chair. It's obvious just how ultra-slim these ultra-slim seats are from the side.

And that's not a complaint! I'm a 30-something-year-old in good health, so spending two hours flying in these Frontier Airlines seats was more than fine – especially for the price. A three hour-flight would probably be OK, too. But much longer than that and I'm not sure I'd walk off a Frontier flight feeling that way. And travelers who have back or mobility issues might wind up paying a steeper price for the discomfort.

The lack of padding is most obvious with the headrest: There really isn't one. And it might be just me, but these seats also feel a bit shorter than your average airplane seat.

But the legroom was a surprise … and a pleasant one, at that! On paper, Frontier offers just 28 inches of seat pitch – the standard aviation measurement of legroom from the back of one seat to the next. Compared to the standard of 31 inches or so on most major carriers (and even more on Southwest or JetBlue economy), you might assume your knees would be crunched.

But that's not the case. The lack of padding, seatback extras, and the scalloped shape of the back of each seat makes the legroom pretty manageable. In fact, I'd say it's close to on par with any major U.S. airline.

The under-seat storage, however, is another matter. With how compact each seat is, there's just not much room for a bag underneath without eating into valuable foot space. My normal-sized backpack clearly stuck out.

While the padding and seat pitch might feel tight, at least there are still just six seats in each row – the same as any other airline flying these narrowbody planes. That means each seat is about as wide as you'd expect – though Frontier makes middle seats in each row a tad wider. That's not enough for me to take a spot between two strangers, but you do you!

What's that on the seatback? Pretty much nothing. Don't expect a seatback screen to stay entertained flying Frontier Airlines. And Frontier doesn't currently offer inflight Wi-Fi, so there's no way to get connected to work in flight.  There are also no power outlets or USB sockets to keep your devices charged.

Each seat does have a tray that folds down, though it's almost comically small – enough to set down a drink and not much else. There's also a small pouch for literature and anything else you might want to store.

Fortunately, there are air vents overhead if you need to cool off.

There were just three lavatories on the plane: One at the front and two all the way at the back. With our departure before dawn, passengers were slumbering rather than getting up to use the bathroom. But during a daytime flight, I'd probably worry about lines forming outside each lavatory.

Service, Food & Drinks Flying Frontier Airlines

Forget about morning blues: The five flight attendants working this Frontier Airlines flight were cheery for our 5:30 a.m. flight.

A pair of flight attendants buzzed down the aisle shortly after leveling off with a drink cart – and given the early hour, there weren't many takers. But if you want something, prepare to pay for it: Frontier Airlines charges for everything.

A soda, juice, full bottle of water, or coffee all cost $3.99. Beer, wine, and liquor each cost $9.99 while Buzzballz cocktails clock in at $10.99 and a small bottle of sparkling wine will cost you $11.99. There are also some snacks like candy, chips, and even cheese trays available for purchase.

I settled on a cup of coffee, which was brewed and served a few minutes later in a cute cup with the claim that Frontier is “America's Greenest Airline.” Refills were free, which was an unexpected touch.

Bottom Line

Above all, the price was right.

At $49 for a one-way flight, Frontier was substantially cheaper than my other options for getting to Denver – even after adding a seat assignment for $25. But add in bag fees and all the other extras, and the math would have quickly changed. And that's the entire point: Frontier and fellow ultra-low-cost carriers are banking on drawing in travelers with dirt-cheap fares, then collecting much more in additional fees.

If you can travel light and survive a stiff seat for a few hours, flying Frontier Airlines is just fine if you ask me.

I have it on good authority from airline sources that recently, Frontier has gotten very militant about checking the size of bags. They used to not do that as much. Gate agents get bonuses for each bag they find oversize. One woman’s bag I witnessed was barely sticking out of the bin and she couldn’t push it down. They wanted to charge her $50! I came to the rescue, gave the bag a good shove and saved her some dough! So careful how you pack, bring a soft-sided bag.

If you’re active duty military, you just show your CAC card and your carry on and 2 checked bags are free. I highly recommend this airline for anyone serving in the military.

It is important to note this airline has terribel customer service and no phone number to reach airline personnel. The only way to reach them is through chat which takes at least 15-30 minutes to be connected. If a flight is cancelled by the airline there are no options to rebook online – just flight credit or refund. The email they send you does not link to any other available flights. They have no agreement with other airlines for flights. MOST IMPORTANT – They give their employees incentives and/or bonuses for charging for personal carryon bags at boarding time which don’t meet their standards for personal carryon items. Sadly, many people (including me) have been harassed for personal bags when they did meet guidelines. (Key hack – Measure your bags and buy a portable weight scale). Frontier airlines has been sued for this practice recently. You have to have a backup plan for your flights when traveling. I had two flights cancelled in the last month, and there was absolutely no help available in getting to my destination. No codeshare arrangement exists with other airlines. I only use them for non-essential trips.

I will never attempt to fly with Frontier ever again and I would not recommend it to anyone. We gave it a shot for cheap flights to Mexico. We were fine getting to Denver, then the gate agent forced us to pay for a back because it did just “slide” right into the bag thing, even though it did fit.

On the way back, we couldn’t check in online, and had to wait in line for like an hour just to check in, even though we weren’t checking any bags.

Next, we got back to Denver, and they delayed and then cancelled our flight without reason in the middle of the night. They wouldn’t put us up in a hotel for 2 nights, which is how long it would have taken to get put on the next flight home. We were stuck and had to pay 4x the price to go on Delta to get home.

We got credits, and then booked a trip to Jamaica, attempting to give them a 2nd chance. They cancelled our flights before the trip even started, but only cancelled 1 of the legs. I had to fight for months to get a refund and ended up disputing things with our CC company.

DO NOT EVER FLY WITH FRONTIER!

This guy is a horrible journalist. He flies Frontier Airlines once and thinks he’s qualified to give a review. What a joke. I’ve been flying Frontier Airlines for years it used to be a good Colorado own company now it is horrible. Do yourself a favor don’t bother reading this dribble and stay the hell off of Frontier airlines. Anybody who has read any of the comments on their website will know how awful their customer service is and how they gouge you. Actually they just got rid of Live customer service a few months ago. I guess they got tired of hearing all the irate people who got screwed by Frontier Airlines. And they’re also under a class action lawsuit right now that should tell you something that this article didn’t bother to share.

I totally agree yesterday what should have taken just a few minutes took about an hour WHY??? you ask you cannot call them only a chat room and the question I had was how to pay my baggage fee and so after chatting with several people I was finally able to get a straight answer so stay far far away from frontier !!!!

I paid for cancellation insurance…..I am 81 years old, the day I was to travel from Phoenix to tampa it was 119 degrees in Phoenix, I cancelled as it was too hot for me to safely travel., I thought cancellation insurance was good, frontier wanted a doctors letter to explain why I cancelled….I. Truly think that deception is the focus of these fraudulent swine ……I want to join a lawsuit against them please advise, I will provide documents…..thad leininger

I’m not trying to side with Frontier here. I too have been avoiding them ever since they implemented the incentive for charging passengers at the gate. I use to work at the airport and confirmed this myself, their agents make a commission. They’re alright when things go well and there’s no harassment over the bag being pushed in the sizer, but the stress and anxiety most people have to worry about just encourages people to fly a more reputable and reasonable air carrier.

Spirit is not my favorite either but I like them much more.

We have flown LAS to BNA four times on Frontier. TWO of the four flights had weight and balance problems ( e.g. unloaded from the back at destination). We buy the Works bundle and we were in row 2 on all four flights. Irritating to say the least. We only fly Frontier if Southwest gets greedy. Last October and December we flew BNA to LAS round trip for half the price of Southwest. However, all upcoming trips are on Southwest.

Save your money. FRONTIER airlines is the worst!!!! Terrible equipment and worst of all the personnel is rude.

I bought 2 passes for the summer Go Wild Pass. Ended up wasting 1000 on this so called deal! I wasn’t even able to use it! Every time I checked for a flight ( and I checked every few days!) and NO FLIGHTS were available! Even though they had plenty of flights for their regular and subscription flights. I contacted the BBB and even after a month of going back and forth, BBB had to close the case unresolved since frontier refused to respond! Don’t make my mistake. DO NOT BUY THEIR “PASSES”. Waste of so much money!

I’d like to point out that this airline is very military friendly. You just show your military CAC card and you get 2 free checked bags and a free carry on. You don’t even need to provide military orders like other airlines require. They are awesome for military and I highly recommend them to anyone serving.

If you genuinely just pay for what you need and don’t expect luxury for a flight that you will just need point A to point B. Also just pay for a decent snack and go to sleep. Then you are going to be fine. However if you don’t pay for what you need and blindly expect for everything to go your way. Welp your screwed and frontier is ready to screw you badlyyyyyy especially if you don’t pre-pay for all that you need. Including assigned seat, pay for bag or carry on, AND travel insurance. Then your pretty set but if you don’t be prepared for the worse frontier experience at the DOOR!! But stay ready you don’t have to get ready! If you don’t want to deal with anything and be a rose colored glasses type of passenger GO ON jet blue or delta so they can over-charge you for customer service!

My flight was delayed for 11hours and a half!!! Compensation: a $15 meal voucher. We had to wait for the next available flight for more than 11 hours, seating on uncomfortable chairs in the cold Philadelphia airport lobby. No explanation for the delays that kept on increasing. My husband and I lost a day of work and we had to pay extra for car parking. I will NEVER fly with Frontier again and I will make sure to tell everyone about this awful experience. Frontier is THE WORST airline I have ever experienced. No customer service, no compassion for the elderly, no consideration for customers time, complete disrespect for human beings.They should go out of business.

Gonna pile on to what everyone else has said and advise you to never EVER fly Frontier if there is another option. Literally anything else–even another ultra-low-cost airline like Spirit or Allegiant–is better than Frontier. I’ve only flown a handful of times with this airline (usually when it’s the only option), but every single experience has been very negative. Their horrible policies and intentionally terrible pre-flight and in-flight experience are one thing, but that’s far from the extent of the grievances. 100% of the time the flight is delayed; 50% of the time the gate changes minutes before boarding. The tiny window of time to drop off your bag, paired with them only staffing a single bag check desk, causes such a massive and slow line that I’ve had to call relatives back to the airport and leave my luggage with them so I wouldn’t miss my flight home standing in the line. Other times, I’ve been stuck on the tarmac for hours after already 6-hour redeye flights, not allowed to stand despite the actual pain of sitting in those upright hard-plastic seats for so long, and left with a dead phone that I had no way to charge and thus no way to communicate the situation to loved ones or even see what time it is. Whatever small amount of money you might ostensibly be able to save by flying this airline, it is absolutely not worth it. I would rather pay more and take a bus than relive the nightmares experienced on Frontier Airlines.

Terrible customer service, scales don’t seem calibrated. Cramped cabin, stiff seats. Avoid if possible, but if funds are limited, prepare for a miserable flight and take no chances on the weight or size of your baggage.

Legroom in standard seats are so small.

DO NOT FLY EVER WITH FRONTIER MOST IMPORTANT – They give their employees incentives and/or bonuses for charging for personal carryon bags at boarding time which don’t meet their standards for personal carryon items. Sadly, many people (including me) have been harassed for personal bags when they did meet guidelines. I want to share here my terrible and very unpleasant experience with the agent responsible for boarding flight F9 3383 to San Francisco from San Diego on July 14, 2024. This agent clearly abused his authority in an excessive manner and was extremely aggressive in his face expressions and his gaze directly threatening me not to let me board if I did not pay extra baggage at the exorbitant price of 99 US$. In fact, my wife was traveling with me and was carrying very small and very light hand luggage in addition to her purse. She was attacked very sharply because she tried to board with one bag that was not paid for according to the company’s rules. I replied that it was unacceptable to charge so much for a bag that was perfectly legal as hand luggage purse. I was accused of insults and verbal assault while standing more than 80 centimeters from the agent. From that moment on, and especially when I asked to be assisted by a lawyer and I was trying to find out the identity of the agent, things got to the point where there were no more solutions for me than to accept the conditions forcefully imposed by the agent risking not being able to travel. It was very clear that the agent knowingly abused his authority forcing and humiliating me to apologize in front of all the staff. His laugh and his attitude really showing great satisfaction with the result obtained. This attitude is unacceptable from an agent of an airline, concerned with providing service and an unforgettable experience to customers. It was quite the opposite and I am therefore going to leave as many negative comments as possible on all social networks on this incident so that this type of person can never work for any airline company again. I hope he recognizes himself and that one day he recognizes his mistake and changes his attitude. So this was the first and certainly the last experience with Frontier, and I will do my best to discourage as many people as possible from traveling with this company.

It is by far the worst airline operating in the US. Here is our experience from SJC-Denver-DC and then return flights. 1). The passengers waited for 1 hour at DC airport after it landed. 2). The passengers waited for 90min at Denver airport before it took off for SJC. 3). We had to pay extra $ for seats (so that family can sit together). $18 for every seat. 4). We had to pay $65 for every carry-on. 5). We paid $149 for a check-in Bag before the flight. Once at the airport in DC, they said the payment has been made only for extra-baggage (they lied, we paid via their frontier app). So we paid again 104$. 6). They didn’t refund and said get vouchers instead. We refused. 7). Altogether we paid extra around $400. Which is more than the difference of tickets with other airlines. So the bottom-line is you end up paying more in this so-called “budget airline”.

I do not have a definitive answer for you, and even if we had the algorithm used, there are probably enough variables, that we could not make perfect sense of things.

Just a guess on my part, but in popularity:

Front to rear

Aisle, then Window, then Center

Now, say that a couple of large groups have taken up much of the front, or rear. That could weigh things. Same if a great number bought all the Aisle seats. Could be many variables, plus I could be wrong, and their program assigns the "less desirable seats," first?

I was going to guess Front to Back. I checked today and I bet 95% of seats are not reserved so I was hoping to get some input from someone who flies with them a lot. Nice to see you Bill outside of the Vegas forum.

Note that at regional airports without a gate they may load and de- plane from the front and rear simultaneously. Last Frontier flight I was in row 13 and the last person off.

Both times I have checked in early I ended up with seats all the way to the back. Next time I will try checking in later. I would think they would leave the more expensive seats open as long as possible in case people want to purchase them up to the last minute.

Frontier Airlines Introduces New UpFront Plus Seating with a Guaranteed Empty Middle Seat for Added Personal Space and Comfort

New upgraded seating in first two rows will provide extra leg and elbow room and ensure customers are first off the aircraft introductory upgrade pricing starts at $49 per passenger, per flight segment.

DENVER – March 12, 2024 – Ultra-low fare carrier Frontier Airlines ( NASDAQ: ULCC ) today announced the introduction of UpFront Plus, a new upgraded seating option with extra space and comfort in the first two rows of the aircraft. Customers in UpFront Plus will enjoy a window or aisle seat with extra legroom and a guaranteed empty middle seat, providing additional personal space and comfort at an exceptional value.

Starting today, customers can upgrade to UpFront Plus seating for flights departing on or after April 10, 2024, by reserving seats on the Frontier mobile app or at FlyFrontier.com. As a special introductory offer, UpFront Plus seating upgrades will be available starting at only $49 per passenger, per flight segment for travel between April 10 and April 30, 2024, when purchased by March 20, 2024*. Seats are limited and restrictions apply.

When one or more of the passengers on a reservation are 13 years of age or younger, Frontier will guarantee adjacent seats for the child or children and an accompanying adult (over age 13) at no additional cost for all fare types subject to limited conditions specified below.

• Child and accompanying adult are on the same reservation
• Adjacent seats are available at the time of booking 
• Adult either chooses seats for the entire reservation or skips seats for the entire reservation, and does not make changes to seat assignments once assigned to them
• It is physically possible based on seat layout to seat the number of children traveling next to the accompanying adult(s).

Although Frontier will provide adjacent seats if available at the time of booking, Frontier might not provide seat assignments right away. Frontier will provide the customer the adjacent seating assignments no later than the day before scheduled departure of the flight.

• Frontier Airlines Mastercard Review: 50,000 Miles, Elite Gold Status, Free Checked Baggage

The Frontier Airlines World Mastercard is a niche co-branded card from Barclays, but if you do fly on Frontier regularly, it actually offers some good perks on a relative basis. Many strict, barebones airlines are starting to trickle back some perks to win back customers and Frontier is no exception. For Frontier, it appears that this credit card is a major gateway to these little wins like actually getting to bring on a carry-on or not having to pay a fee to redeem your miles. (I’ve never flown Frontier before, but I’m assuming they must be cheap for you to put up with this stuff!)

Here are the highlights:

• 50,000 Frontier Miles after $1,000 in purchases within the first 90 days of account opening.
• Two Free Checked Bags for primary cardmember. Must purchase flight at FlyFrontier.com using this card. Includes ski/golf bag.
• Elite Gold Status. Get it upfront for 90 days with account opening and first purchase with your card within the first 90 days of account opening. To keep it, you must spend $3,000 within the first 90 days of account opening. Status will be good for 12 months from the day the account was opened.
• Pooling of miles between friends and family members is allowed with this card.
• Zone 2 Priority Boarding for primary cardmember.
• Award Redemption Fee Waiver
• 5X miles on eligible purchases at flyfrontier.com.
• 3X miles on eligible restaurant purchases.
• 1X miles on all other purchases.
• 1 Elite Status Point for every $1 spent on purchases.
• $100 Frontier Airlines Flight Voucher after your Account anniversary when you have spent $2,500 or more in Net Purchases on your Card Account during your cardmembership year (each 12-month period through and including your Card Account anniversary date).
• $0 annual fee for the first year, then $99.

Redeeming Frontier miles. They advertise that 50,000 miles can be redeem for “up to 2 round-trip award tickets”, which is technically true but that is for their most limited “value” awards. They also have “standard” awards and “last seat” awards (available to elites only). You will also be subject to taxes and fees starting a $5.60 per one-way. Here is their award chart:

The good news is that this card does give you an easy pathway toward Elite Gold status for the first year and that lets you nab any unsold seat on the plane. But that also means that 50,000 miles might only be worth a single roundtrip award ticket.

You also avoid the award redemption fee with this credit card. Otherwise, they charge an award redemption fee of between $15 and $75 for all award tickets departing within 180 days of booking.

I’ve seen outside valuations place the value of a Frontier mile at about 1.1 cent each. After pricing out some Frontier flights, I can roughly agree though it will definitely vary based on your route. The cheaper, shorter flights are easier to find a “saver” award, while their most convenient, longer routes you should expect to use the “standard” or “last seat” awards. I’d also only agree with this valuation if I had this credit card to ease the hassles.

Two free checked bags are a new feature that was just announced 8/15/24 , and it hasn’t even been added to the official application page as of this writing (hat tip to DoC ). Here is the fine print:

Tickets must be purchased from FlyFrontier.com or the Frontier Airlines mobile app · There is no limit to how many times you can use this benefit · Free checked bag benefit includes golf and ski equipment · Primary cardmembers must use their FRONTIER Airlines World Mastercard at booking to unlock the free checked bag benefit

Due to the limited footprint of Frontier, I’m not sure if I will add this to my Top 10 Best Credit Card Bonus Offers .

I took a look at GRR (the city I would fly out of) to DEN and it was exactly 50K points at $558. A couple of checked bags and a carry on is worth $195, so that is about $750. That is a pretty decent return on the $1000.

But of course, this is definitely a YMMV depending on their routes and such making sense for you.

After that, the annual fees less than the perks of one flight with the free baggage.

So some people might burn this and some might keep it.
