Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
Research is an integral component in an institute of higher learning. BITS Pilani Dubai campus with its state-of-the-art research facilities offers Ph.D. programmes with strong emphasis laid on interdisciplinary, mission oriented and relevant research. Topics of Research can be chosen from any of the disciplines in which the Institute offers the First and Higher Degree Programmes or any interdisciplinary or allied areas as given in Page 23-26 of the higher degree prospectus. Click here for prospectus.
BITS Pilani offers Ph.D. programme in Engineering & Allied Disciplines under the following schemes:
Candidates registered for the On-campus programme will undergo the entire pursuit of their thesis on campus. Candidates admitted under this scheme will work full time toward their Ph.D. research and will not take any other assignment till the submission of the final thesis. The required components for On-Campus Programmes are: Qualifying Examination, Course Work, Teaching Practice, Seminar, Doctoral Thesis and Research Methodology. It is expected that the Ph.D. Scholar submits his/her Ph.D. thesis within an upper limit of ten semesters subsequent to passing the Qualifying examination.
This unique opportunity is offered for employed professionals working in Industries, Academic Institutes and R&D organizations and having long experience and proven competence in various fields to work towards the Ph.D. degree. Candidates meeting the input qualifications and working in an organization, which encourages and facilitates research and situated preferably in the close vicinity of the BITS Pilani campus are eligible to apply for admission in “Part-Time” Ph.D. programme. The required components for Part-time and Off-Campus Doctoral programmes are: Qualifying Examination, Course Work, Practice Lecture Series, Research Methodology, Independent Study & Doctoral Thesis.
Candidates meeting the input qualification and working in an organization collaborating with BITS Pilani will normally be considered for admission to “Off-Campus” programme, also known as Ph.D. Aspirant Scheme. Such candidates will be allowed to pursue their research at their own locations of work. The required components for Off-Campus Doctoral programmes are: Qualifying Examination, Course Work, Practice Lecture Series, Research Methodology, Independent Study & Doctoral Thesis.
The following eligibility criteria is applicable for admission to BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus: M.E./M.S./M.B.A./M.Phil. of BITS Pilani or its equivalent with a minimum of 60% aggregate.
Eligible Candidates will be required to take a written test and interview. The admission will be based on the performance in the qualifying degree, experience, test and interview.

We conduct an admission test usually comprising a written test and interview. Candidates who have cleared UGC-NET or have an MPhil /MTech degree may directly appear for the interview.
During the first year of PhD, scholars go through course-work, undertake teaching assignments and participate in department activities. Following this, scholars have to clear a qualifying examination before registering for their PhD thesis.
Scholars encouraged to collaborate and have frequent discussions. They are expected to present department seminars and present their research progress to the DAC at the end of every semester. Research findings are communicated to the entire research community through papers published in well-regarded journals and through conference presentations. A set of coherent research outcomes form the PhD thesis which is evaluated by experts in the area.
An advertisement for PhD admission normally appears in April & November for admission into 1st semester & 2nd semester respectively. Working professionals (for instance, college teachers) may also seek admission as part-time PhD candidates. PhD admission test usually comprises a written test and interview. Candidates who have cleared UGC-NET or have an MPhil /MTech degree may directly appear for the interview. Admissions Portal Selected candidates are invited to interact with the department to choose an area of research and are assigned a supervisor and a Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) consisting of at least two faculty members. The supervisor and DAC select the course package for the first two semesters. PhD scholars are granted a tuition fee-waiver (decided by the current rules of the Institute) in exchange for teaching assistantship. A scholar is assigned teaching work taking up a maximum of 6 hours a week.

Matching with the Institute philosophy of integrated approach to the modern areas of science and technology, the Department of Biological Sciences at the BITS Pilani was formed by merging the existing Botany and Zoology Department in the year 1969. Since then the Department is engaged in providing the quality education to the selected students and contributing to the field of modern biology by the adequate research input. Drawing manpower from Biology, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Computer Science Departments, the institute created Centre for Biotechnology. The centre was formally launched in the year 1999 with the active fund support and technical expertise from Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Currently the Department is offering M.Sc.(Hons) Biological Sciences, M.E.(Biotech) and Ph.D Programmes
The department offers a full time Ph.D. programme in the following thrust areas of its research.
Plant Biotechnology
