Are you interested in joining your high school newspaper? Many high schools have a school paper to give students an opportunity to hone their writing skills and keep students, staff, and teachers updated on school and community news.

Participating in your high school newspaper is a great way to improve your writing skills, learn more about journalism, and develop pieces you can include in your portfolio or resume.  Read on to learn all you'll need to know about how to join your school newspaper, what work you’ll be doing, and how it will benefit you.

What Does a High School Newspaper Cover?

If you join your school's newspaper, what will you write about? The specific topics will vary from paper to paper, but most school papers cover topics that affect the school and surrounding community.

Common topics that school papers cover include:

  • School events, such as dances, pep rallies, and assemblies
  • School news
  • Interviews with new students and staff
  • School sports teams, clubs, and performing groups
  • Community news
  • Awards won by the school, a student, or a teacher
  • Reviews of movies, music, and TV shows that appeal to teenagers

One reason that many students enjoy being on the school paper is that they have a lot of freedom on what topics they’d like to cover. If you are just starting on the paper, you may be assigned articles to write about, but eventually, most writers are able to focus on topics they care about and find interesting.

For example, if you enjoy sports, you may be able to write about the school’s sports teams and travel to different sporting events to cover them. If you like fashion, it may be possible for you to start a column that discusses current clothing trends for teenagers.

What Does the School Paper Staff Do?

The work you do as part of your high school newspaper can vary widely depending on your school and your role on the paper. Some schools offer a journalism class that lets you work on the paper during the day and for academic credit. At other schools, the school paper is considered an extracurricular and is only done after school. Some schools let students choose what roles they’d try, others assign them or have students rotate throughout all the roles.

In all cases, producing the school paper is a lot of work, and students who join it can expect to devote a significant amount of time to it in order to meet deadlines and have enough pieces ready. Students often work together to brainstorm ideas and review articles before they are published, but between those times you may often find yourself working independently as you research stories, interview sources, and write up stories.

The work you do for the school paper will also depend on the role you have. While most students are writers or reporters, other jobs exist as well, and they are all critical to producing a complete and high-quality school paper.

Common Newspaper Jobs

Writer:  Writers are responsible for the majority of written content in the newspaper. They research and pitch story ideas, interview sources, and write articles that are then included in the school paper.

Editor:  After writing for awhile, you may choose to become an editor or split your duties between writing and editing. Editors are the overseers: they make sure everything in the paper is top quality. Their duties include developing ideas for new articles, approving article ideas, and editing completed pieces to ensure they are high quality and polished, as well as free of spelling and grammatical errors.

Graphics and Layout:  These people are responsible for the images included in the school paper and how the final product looks. This group can include photographers, who take pictures to accompany stories and sometimes travel to get specific shots. It can also include graphic artists who design images and headers to be used in the paper. Finally, people in charge of the layout (who may also be editors) decide how the articles will be arranged, where images will be inserted, and smaller details such as margin and font size.

How to Join Your High School Paper

School newspapers almost always have a teacher who supervises the paper and ensures that everything is running smoothly. Your first step should be to contact them and ask how you can get involved. In some cases, you have to enroll in a high school journalism class to be part of the paper . You will receive academic credit for this, just like all your other classes, and you will work on the paper during the school day (although you will likely do work outside of school as well).

For other schools, school paper is considered an extracurricular, and you will only work on it after school and not receive academic credit.  Some schools require prospective journalists to show writing samples before letting them join the paper, other schools allow anyone with an interest to join. If your school requires a writing sample, you may be able to use a paper you've written for a previous class, or you can choose a story you think is interesting, such as a school dance or community event, and write a story on that. If you are unsure of who runs the school paper, ask one of your English teachers or your academic adviser.

What If Your School Doesn't Have a Paper?

If your school doesn’t have a newspaper, don’t worry, there are other ways for you to get journalism and writing experience.

Alternative Options

There are a number of other extracurriculars and activities you can try if you like writing but either aren't able to join the school newspaper or aren't sure it's right for you.

Most high schools distribute yearbooks, and many of these are designed by students. While being part of the yearbook will not involve as much writing as being part of a newspaper would, there are still many similarities between the two. Both require thinking of story ideas, developing layouts, editing, and getting quotes to include. Some yearbooks also include longer written pieces that you may be able to work on.

Literary Journal

Your school may produce a literary journal in addition to or instead of a school newspaper. Literary journals often include many types of writing such as poetry, short stories, non-fiction, and humor pieces. If your school has a literary journal, it's likely that you'll be able to submit some articles similar to those you would write for a school paper.

School Newsletter

Even if your school doesn’t have a regular newspaper, it will likely have some sort of newsletter that it distributes to students and parents. While most of the pieces in these newsletters are about school news and upcoming events, many newsletters also include articles on topics common in school papers. Talk to someone at the school office or your academic adviser to learn if you can contribute to the newsletter.

Community or Local Paper

If you are unable to find an opportunity at your school, you may be able to join a paper in your community. Many places produce local papers or community newsletters, and it may be possible for you to contribute articles or do an internship at one of them to learn more about journalism.

Start Your Own School Newspaper

You may also want to create a school newspaper if your school doesn’t already have one. While this will take a significant time commitment, it can be worth it if you’re very interested in journalism. Being the founder of the school paper also shows leadership and motivation , two qualities that colleges love to see in applicants.

Follow These Steps to Get Started:

Step 1:  Talk to your academic adviser to learn how to start a new club or group at your school. There may be specific procedures you have to follow, and it’s best to know them before you get started. Making the club official may also give you a budget that you can use for printing fees and other expenses.

Step 2:  Find a teacher to supervise the paper. While students will be doing the majority of the work, most school clubs require a teacher to act as sponsor and oversee the group. If you don’t have a specific teacher in mind, ask one of your English teachers if they’d be willing to be the supervisor.

Step 3:  Recruit members and assign roles. Ask people you know and put up posters around the school. You’ll need writers, photographers, artists, and people with good computer skills in order to produce a complete paper. Your first issue doesn’t have to be extremely long; a few well written and edited articles with good formatting will look better than a longer paper that isn’t as polished.

Step 4:  Start creating! Once everyone knows what their job is, start brainstorming topics, interviewing sources, and writing articles.

Step 5:  Edit and assemble the paper. Check articles for spelling and grammatical errors, and decide where articles and images will be placed.

Step 6:  Print and distribute. Your school may allow you to print the paper for free on one of the school computers or provide you with a budget to cover printing fees. If they don't, and the cost of printing is high, you can try raising money through fundraisers such as bake sales. You may also consider distributing digital copies of the paper first. If you are printing paper versions, get permission to leave copies in the school library, computer rooms, or other areas that students frequent.

Joining your high school newspaper is a great way to learn about journalism and improve your writing skills.

Members of the school paper have a lot of different jobs including researching new topics, conducting interviews, writing and editing stories, and taking photographs to accompany articles.

Being part of your school newspaper can help you improve your writing skills, meet new people, and give you experience to include on your resumes and college applications.

So new year, new you, new job? If you're feeling like it's time for a professional change, one of the first things you'll need to do is update your resume. Career coach Cynthia Pong says, you never know when the right job will come along, and you'll want to send that resume over without delay.

CYNTHIA PONG: It's kind of one of those be ready so you don't have to get ready type of things.

LIMBONG: But getting a resume together can be daunting and stressful. No worries, though. NPR's got your back on this one. Here's Life Kit host Marielle Segarra.

MARIELLE SEGARRA, BYLINE: All right. Our goal here is to bring you one step closer to the job you want. See how I summarized there at the top of the piece? That's what you want to do on your resume. After you put down your personal info - name, email, phone number - at the very top, Pong says you should write a several-sentence summary.

PONG: So you can think of this as your mission statement.

SEGARRA: And this is a way to show the hiring manager why you'd be a great fit for this job.

PONG: Especially if you're someone who other folks tend to underestimate what you bring to the table, or you're doing something nontraditional in your career, or you're a career changer, something like that.

SEGARRA: Pong, by the way, is the founder of the career coaching firm Embrace Change. So she says about three to five lines here, really a few sentences at most - and this is who you are professionally, in a nutshell. You can start with some adjectives - engaging, thorough, creative - and then your role or desired role.

PONG: And then you could say, you know, podcast host for mission-driven audio initiatives and organizations. And then I would say something like, excels at X, Y, and Z.

SEGARRA: And the last sentence of the summary can be something about where you're going with your career. You know, is there an arc to it? Do you know what kind of roles you'd like next? After the summary, Pong suggests that you include a section called Core Competencies.

PONG: Where you list maximum of four to six areas where you really excel.

SEGARRA: So look at the job posting. You know, see what they're looking for, what keywords they use and how those align with your skills. Just make sure you're not repeating what's in your summary. OK. Next up is work experience. You're going to list the relevant places you've worked plus the years you were there, and maybe if the company isn't a household name, you can put down a few words about what it does. Then you'll put bullet points under each job that show what you've achieved or accomplished. If you have a gap in your resume, you can put down things like unpaid community work, freelance work, education, or skills development, basically other things you did during that time.

PONG: Now, the only other footnote I'd add here is if it is a very long gap or you otherwise feel kind of compelled to proactively frame what happened here for folks, then you could include that in the cover letter. But either way, you know, be prepared to discuss it in the interview confidently if and when you get to that stage.

SEGARRA: Also, if you took a while off from working because you were sick, for instance, or caring for a loved one, you could write something like medical leave or sabbatical on your resume and list the year. After that, in the lower third of your resume, you're going to list other skills - languages, software programs you know, also educational experience. You don't have to put down your date of graduation, especially if you're concerned about age discrimination, but it is good to include your major.

PONG: Because you never know what could spark a connection between you and whoever ultimately is reading the resume.

SEGARRA: And you can have a section for awards or volunteer or community work or publications or leadership roles in industry groups. After that, proofread your resume. Maybe have a friend or a mentor look it over, and it's ready to go. Hope you get the job. For NPR News, I'm Marielle Segarra.

  • On days when school buildings are closed due to inclement weather or other emergencies, all students and families should plan on participating in remote learning.
  • Individual schools’ Parent-Teacher Conference dates might be different from the dates below. Your child’s teacher will work with you to schedule your conference.
  • On this schedule, elementary schools are defined as programs that serve kindergarten (K) through grade 8, including schools with 3-K and Pre-K programs, as well as those that end in grade 5. Middle schools are defined as programs that serve grades 6–8, and high schools are defined as programs that serve grades 9–12.

Coffee with the Dean is returning this semester with a variety of new topics. This series is geared toward faculty, staff and graduate students.

Each session is 9:30-10:30 a.m. in Centennial Engineering Center, Suite 3071 (large conference room). Refreshments will be served.

RSVP is requested. The schedule will likely be updated with special guests for some of the topics.

  • February 16 — Mentoring: What is working or what could work better (for staff, faculty, students).

Delhi Schools Resume Classes Today, Timings Changed Due to Foggy Conditions

School timings across Delhi have, however, changed. As per the Directorate of Education (DoE), schools are not allowed to commence classes before 9 am

Schools in Delhi have resumed classes today, January 15. All government, government-aided and recognized private schools have opened today after being shut for some days due to extreme cold weather in the capital. “Effective from January 15, 2024 (Monday), this directive applies to students across all levels, including Nursery, KG, and Primary classes,” the official notification read, reported Economic Times.

School timings across Delhi have, however, changed. The Directorate of Education (DoE) has changed the school timings due to foggy conditions in the capital. As per the official directive, schools are not allowed to commence classes before 9 am. Furthermore, schools have been instructed not to extend their classes beyond 5 pm until the directorate provides further instructions on the same.

The Directorate of Education had earlier extended the winter vacation in Delhi schools till January 12 due to cold weather conditions. Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced on the microblogging site “X” that the decision has been made to extend the winter break for students in Nursery through Class 5 by five days, until January 12. “Schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next 5 days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, for students from Nursery to Class 5,” Atishi wrote in the post.

School students’ winter break was set to conclude on January 6, with classes resuming on January 8. However, due to intense cold waves, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert owing to dense fog, light rainfall, and a dip in temperature and hence the winter break was extended across schools in the national capital.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has extended the winter holidays for students up to Class 5 at all schools till January 21 due to severe cold conditions prevailing across the state. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said regular classes for students of grades 6 to 12 will be held from 10 am to 3 pm from Jan 21.

Delhi schools set to reopen on Monday, classes to begin at 9 am

The classes will resume in physical mode from 9 am on monday and no school is allowed to function beyond 5 pm given the dense fog conditions.

Schools in Delhi are all set to open on January 15 after the winter break announced due to dense to very dense fog as well as cold wave conditions. The classes will resume in physical mode from 9 am on Monday and no school is allowed to function beyond 5 pm given the dense fog conditions, an order by the Department of Education said. 

"However, taking precaution in view of the prevailing foggy conditions, no school (including double shift schools) will start before 9 am and have classes beyonf 5 pm till further directions," the order read. All teaching and non-teaching staff will have to report to duty as usual, the order further noted. The order is also applicable on students of Nursery, KG and Primary classes.  

Previously on January 7, Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced the extension of winter break till January 12 due to the ongoing cold wave in the national capital. "Schools will remain closed for the next 5 days for students from nursery to class 5", she said in a post at the time. 

Delhi weather today 

 As temperatures plummeted further, intensifying the fog situation during morning hours, there was speculation about a possible further extension of the winter break. Sunday saw Delhi recording its coldest morning of the season, with the minimum temperature dropping to 3.5 degrees Celsius. This was lower than Saturday's 3.6 degrees and Friday's 3.9 degrees.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Sunday's minimum temperature was four degrees below the season's average. The IMD also said in its forecast that very dense fog and cold wave conditions is likely to prevail in the national capital for more than two days, with dense fog expected to persist until January 20.

"Dense to very dense fog conditions likely to continue to prevail over north India during next 4-5 days," the IMD forecast read. The Palam Observatory near the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi reported dense fog with zero visibility at 5am, marking the longest duration of dense fog this season.

Perry officials announce plans for elementary, middle school students to resume classes.

Officials from the Perry Community School District announced Wednesday when elementary and middle school students will return to class after last week's deadly school shooting .

Elementary students will go back to class on Thursday, Jan. 18, and middle schoolers will return Friday, Jan. 19, according to a Facebook post. The school will hold open house events before the return to class and will offer counseling services for families.

The district says the return for high school students is still being discussed.

Perry High School student Dylan Butler , 17, killed a sixth grader and wounded seven other people in the shooting on Jan. 4 before killing himself. Authorities have provided no information about a possible motive or how Butler, who they believe acted alone, obtained the firearms.

Butler's parents released a statement Monday saying, in part, "We had no inkling he intended the horrible violence he was about to inflict."
