The web tool below also allows searching by supervisor name or keyword (e.g. weathering, AMOC, acidification, volcanoes)

We recognise structural and long-standing issues with under-representation in postgraduate study at national and international levels. Here at Southampton we are taking action to increase the representation of our intake, to embed understanding of the needs of a diverse research community and to create a supportive and inclusive environment in all of our activities. Further details can be found on our EDI statement .

We welcome applications from candidates with non-traditional backgrounds. We also invite enquiries about possibilities of doing a PhD with us if you wish to work part time, if you have childcare or other needs that mean you need to work flexibly.

We recognise that applying for a PhD can be a challenging process, particularly where you might not have access to support from people familiar with the process to help you effectively put an application together. In this document we’ve therefore included some further information on what we’re looking for in the application process and at interview , and some contact points (particularly for students from backgrounds which are currently under-represented in our PhD cohorts or in UK higher education) for further support.

You are very welcome to contact your prospective supervisor(s) ahead of applying for a PhD, and indeed this is a good idea – they will welcome hearing from you. When contacting a prospective supervisor, it’s useful to include some background to your scientific interests, why you are interested in the project and the work the supervisor does, and any questions that you have about the project or points that you’d like to discuss further.

Applicant FAQ

phd noc application

Frequently Asked Questions – Eligibility, Funding, Knight-Hennessy Scholars, etc.

In addition to the most frequently asked Biosciences questions below, please also visit the Graduate Admissions FAQ web page for a more expansive list.

Are there any prerequisites or background coursework required for the 14 Biosciences PhD Programs?

A majority of the Biosciences PhD Programs do not have specific course requirements for admission.  The faculty like to see that you have taken a rigorous course load, but they will be particularly interested in your research experience.  While many of our graduate students have undergraduate preparation in a life sciences curriculum, it is feasible to enter from other programs, including chemistry, computer science, mathematics, psychology, or physics.  The  Biomedical Data Science ,  Biophysics ,  Molecular and Cellular Physiology , and  Structural Biology  programs have prerequisite or background course requirements. We strongly recommend that you reach out to the  programs  to which you plan to apply, to ask for specific course requirements/suggestions.

Can I apply to other graduate programs (e.g. Applied Physics, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, etc.) in addition to the 14 Biosciences PhD Programs?

You may apply to only one graduate program per academic year. The only exception is within the 14 Biosciences PhD Programs, where you may apply for two Biosciences programs within a single application. The 14 Biosciences PhD Programs include:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biomedical Data Science
  • Cancer Biology
  • Chemical and Systems Biology
  • Developmental Biology
  • Microbiology and Immunology
  • Molecular and Cellular Physiology
  • Neurosciences
  • Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine
  • Structural Biology

Can I defer my enrollment?

Admitted students are expected to enroll in their Home Program in September of the year they are admitted. Deferral requests will be reviewed by your admitting program’s admissions committee and are approved on a case-by-case basis. The maximum length of an admissions deferral granted by Stanford is one year. Typically, deferral requests are only approved for military, medical, visa, or education-related purposes.

Can recommenders submit their letter via mail, email, fax, or a letter service?

All recommendations must be submitted using the online application system as recommenders are required to respond to specific evaluation questions on the recommendation form. Letters of recommendation cannot be mailed, emailed, faxed, or submitted through a letter service (with the exception of Interfolio). For letters submitted via Interfolio, please remember that letters written specifically for your Stanford graduate program tend to be stronger than letters written for general use purposes.

Do any of the 14 Biosciences PhD Programs offer an MS degree program?

The Biomedical Data Science program is the only Biosciences Program that currently offers an MS degree program.  Information about the program and its application process can be found on its website .

If you are not interested in one of the 14 Biosciences PhD Programs, you can find a list of all the currently offered degrees at Stanford (along with their contact information) on the Graduate Admissions  Explore Programs web page .

Do I need to hold an MS degree to be eligible to apply?

A Master’s degree is only required if you do not meet the following eligibility requirements.  To be eligible for admission to graduate programs at Stanford, applicants must meet  one  of the following conditions:

  • Applicants must hold, or expect to hold before enrollment at Stanford, a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association.
  • Applicants from institutions outside the U.S. must hold, or expect to hold before enrollment at Stanford, the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing. See the Office of Graduate Admissions for the  minimum level of study required of international applicants .

Do I need to include a department code number when requesting to have my GRE and/or TOEFL scores sent to Stanford?

Applicants should have the Educational Testing Service (ETS) send scores electronically to Stanford. Our university code is  4704  and no department code is required. You will either self-report your scores or indicate the date you will take the test(s) in the online application. Self-reported test scores will be used by the relevant admissions committee in their initial review process. Your unofficial test scores will be validated when your official scores are received by the University.

Do I need to secure a Lab/Thesis Supervisor prior to applying?

You will not need to secure a research supervisor prior to applying. Incoming students usually do 2-4 lab rotations during their first year.  Information on the rotation process can be found on the following  website .  If you realize a few weeks into a rotation that the lab is not a good fit for you, then there is no reason for you to stay any longer.

Do I need to submit official transcripts/academic records?

Graduate Admissions only requires admitted applicants who accept the offer of admission to submit official transcripts that shows their degree conferral. More details on this can be found on the following Graduate Admissions  webpage .   Please do not send or have sent any transcripts to us or to your program.

Do you offer fellowships to international applicants?

We have a limited number of fellowships (which include a yearly stipend, tuition, and health and dental insurance) available to the most highly competitive international applicants. The stipend for the 2023-24 Academic Year is $51,600 ($12,900 per quarter). Admittance to the Biosciences Programs for international applicants varies from year to year depending on funding and available space. We strongly encourage applicants to apply for scholarships/fellowships in their home country that can be used overseas. Some useful websites that include information on external fellowships are:

  • Fulbright Foreign Student Program
  • The Fogarty International Center at the NIH
  • International Center at the Institute of International Education (IIE)

Applying for scholarships/fellowships generally takes some time to arrange, so plan ahead. You will be able to list any scholarships/fellowships that you have applied for and been awarded in the “Additional Information” section of the online application under “External Funding for Graduate Study”.  For more information about the costs and estimated expenses of attending Stanford, please visit the following  webpage .

Does the Bioengineering PhD program participate in the Biosciences Interview Session?

The Bioengineering PhD program is not one of the 14 Biosciences PhD Programs and has a separate admissions process and Interview Session.

How do I change one of my recommenders?

On the Recommendations page of the application, click on the recommender’s name you wish to replace, then click Exclude at the bottom of the resulting popup window. You then will see the option to add a new recommender. The recommender you exclude will not receive an email notification.

How does the funding work for those admitted to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program and the Biosciences?

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program funding covers the first three years and your admitting Home Program will cover the remaining years.

I previously applied to the Stanford Biosciences Programs and was not admitted. What application materials will I need to submit?

Applicants who wish to reapply follow the same application process as first-time applicants. Reapplicants have the option of using letters of recommendation from their prior submitted Biosciences application or having new ones submitted.  Prior applications from the Autumn 2022, 2023, and 2024 admission cycles have been retained. It is highly recommended that one new letter of recommendation be submitted on your behalf.  When completing the application, you will be required to enter the information for a minimum of three recommenders (including the information for the letter writers that you plan to reuse).

For the letters you plan to reuse, please notify your recommenders in advance that they will receive a recommendation request but should not take any action.  Once you submit your application, please submit an email to the Biosciences Admissions Office indicating which letters you would like to reuse so we can add them to your application.

I’m an applicant whose first language is not English. Is it possible to have the TOEFL Test requirement waived?

Information about the TOEFL Test requirements, exemptions and waivers can be found on the  Graduate Admissions  website. Please note that if you submit a waiver request, it will be routed to Graduate Admissions  after you submit your application . Allow up to 15 business days after submitting your application for a response.

I’ve applied to multiple Home Programs and was wondering what happens if more than one program is interested in interviewing me?

In that case, the admissions representatives confer and attempt to determine which Home Program best fits your interests and should serve as your host. They will use the information you provided in your Statement of Purpose and on the Biosciences Supplemental Form. In most cases the best match is clear, but in rare cases where this is not the case, an admissions committee member will contact you directly to discuss with you which Home Program would be the best to host your visit. You will also have an opportunity to meet with faculty affiliated with other Home Programs during your visit.

If my school does not use a 4.0 GPA grading scale, how should I report this on my application?

You are asked to enter both GPA and GPA scale for each institution you list on the application. Enter your GPA as it appears on your transcript. Do not convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale if it’s reported on a different scale.

Is there a minimum GPA requirement?

There is no minimum GPA requirement to be considered for admission. The application review process is holistic and all aspects of the application (prior coursework, letters of recommendation, the statement of purpose, prior research experience, and test scores {if applicable}) are considered by the Admissions Committee when making an admissions decision.

What if my recommenders are not receiving their recommender link emails?

Occasionally, some email servers will send recommender link emails directly to Spam or will not allow the email to reach the primary inbox at all (particularly for email addresses located outside of the United States). Please reach out to Technical Support by submitting a request via the “Request Application Support” button on the “Instructions” page of your application.

What is included in the offer of admission?

The offer of admission for the 2023-24 Academic Year included a stipend of $51,600 ($12,900 per quarter), health and dental insurance, and graduate tuition. The stipend and benefits for the 2025-26 Academic Year will be set sometime in March 2025.  For more information about the costs and estimated expenses of attending Stanford, please visit the following webpage .

What is the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program?

The  Knight-Hennessy Scholars  program develops a community of future global leaders to address complex challenges through collaboration and innovation. The program will award up to 100 high-achieving students with three years of funding to pursue a graduate education at Stanford. To be considered, you  must apply to both  the Knight-Hennessy Scholars by Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 1:00 pm (PST) and to one of the Stanford Biosciences PhD programs by Sunday , December 1, 2024, at 11:59:59 pm (PST) .  Information about the program and the application process can be found on the  Knight-Hennessy Scholars  program website.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The state of Purdue University’s metrics in the past 12 months broke records in almost all dimensions.

In fiscal year 2024, Purdue research awards and philanthropic fundraising once again reached new milestones, shattering records set just last year, according to a summary report presented to university trustees Friday (Aug. 2) by Purdue President Mung Chiang.

Purdue received $647 million in research awards from federal and industry sources during the fiscal year that ran from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024. That represents a 6% jump from the year-ago period and is more than double the university’s funded research in FY 2013. At the same time, private contributions to Purdue rose nearly 4% to $632 million, another all-time high.

Both new records mark the second consecutive year these two major components of the university’s financial and research enterprise surpassed $600 million annually.

“The impressive performance this past year is a testament to the persistent pursuit of excellence at scale by our faculty, staff, students and alumni, touching every aspect of this dynamic university full of momentum,” Chiang said.

Highlights of Purdue’s fiscal year 2024 financial activity:

  • The record $632 million in philanthropic giving was propelled by a nearly 2% jump in the number of donors, rising to 85,421.
  • Funding for sponsored research surged to $647 million from $613 million in the previous fiscal year. Purdue’s total research awards have steadily climbed each year since 2013 and are considered a high benchmark for a university without either a medical school or a major Department of Defense establishment. The year’s funding will support approximately 3,500 research projects.
  • The university’s endowment climbed to $4.1 billion, reflecting an 11.6% return and an inflow during the year of $82 million.
  • A barometer of the university’s thriving entrepreneurship culture, intellectual property disclosures surged nearly 17% to 466 from 400 in fiscal 2023, the Office of Technology Commercialization reported. During the same period, 290 patents were issued, up 11%, while the number of patents licenses skyrocketed 49% to 224. This ecosystem helped establish 16 startup companies based on Purdue research.
  • The number of research publication citations by Purdue faculty rose nearly 13% to 435,087, and the number of books published by faculty jumped nearly 40% to 60.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Purdue sets record with $647 million in research awards
  • President Chiang’s report to trustees

During the year, Purdue also signed nine new master research agreements with industry, including one as part of the landmark announcement this spring by South Korea-based SK hynix to invest close to $4 billion to build an advanced packaging fabrication and R&D facility for artificial intelligence semiconductor products in the Purdue Research Park. The development of a critical link in the U.S. chips supply chain marks a giant leap forward in the industry and the state.

Additionally, Purdue was chosen this past year to play a primary role in three national hubs —  Heartland BioWorks, Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen and Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons —  focused on ensuring the U.S. remains globally competitive in areas critical to national security. Purdue also was selected to lead seven national research centers, including the renewal of three existing centers.

Welcoming most selective incoming class

Chiang also reported that Purdue is projected to welcome its most selective class of undergraduate students for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year as part of the university’s 10th straight year of record applicants.

This fall’s projected class of undergraduate Boilermakers in West Lafayette was selected at a 48.2% admission rate from a record-setting pool of 72,986 applicants, with a post-summer-melt yield rate at a record of 31%, significantly higher than all historical data.

The number of graduate student applications also reached another record level. PhD candidate applications hit 11,677, a 23% surge year over year, with a 20% projected admittance rate. Master’s student applications climbed 12% to 14,403, with 28.5% projected admissions.

Another positive trend for the pocketbooks of students and families: The number of Boilermakers graduating without any debt climbed 3 percentage points to 64% during this period, Chiang said.

With affordability and accessibility at the forefront of its mission and buoyed by nearly a decade of record enrollment totals, Purdue has kept tuition at $9,992 per year for Indiana residents and $28,794 for out-of-state students for 13 consecutive years since 2012-13.

Purdue’s ongoing commitment to expanding its online offerings from West Lafayette also is drawing increased interest and activity:

  • Enrollment in Purdue’s online master’s degree programs increased 23% to 5,245 students during fiscal 2024. That included 4,450 students enrolled through Purdue’s West Lafayette campus.
  • The number of students taking online certificate classes surged 56% to 15,955, including 12,257 in fee-based certificate programs.
  • Enrollment among residential students at the West Lafayette campus taking online courses jumped 14% to 12,934.

Additionally, Chiang reported that the number of Purdue students graduating in four years improved slightly to 67%. The six-year graduation rate remained at 84%, vs. 74% in 2008.

Rising national, global profiles

The land-grant university’s enhanced national and global profile also continues to play a major role in driving applications to record levels while accelerating research and industry engagement activities:

  • QS World University rankings listed Purdue at No. 8 among the nation’s public universities and No. 24 overall in the U.S. for its 2025 survey. Purdue also ranked No. 89 among 1,500 global universities, rising 10 spots from 2024.
  • The 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Purdue the No. 33 university in the U.S . and No. 86 worldwide. Purdue ranked No. 14 among U.S. public universities and was No. 9 among public land-grant institutions.
  • Purdue has enjoyed six consecutive years as a top 10 Most Innovative university as designated by U.S. News & World Report, and 13 of its undergraduate programs were ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. in its 2024 survey. Overall, Purdue also ranked No. 43 among 435 U.S. universities, up eight spots from 2023 and rising to the highest position in school history.
  • Purdue placed No. 1 among U.S. public universities and was named the No. 9 most recognized university in the world in the 2024-25 Global University Visibility (GUV) rankings , which was released July 16.
  • Purdue was ranked No. 16 on Fast Company’s list of the 50 Most Innovative Companies in 2023. And in 2022 and 2023 Purdue was the only university on Fast Company’s Brand That Matters list, designations that recognize organizations for communicating their brand’s mission and ideals with intention and authenticity.
  • Purdue ranked as the Best Value university in Indiana, No. 2 in the Big Ten, sixth among U.S. public universities, and No. 15 among all institutions nationwide in a list released in 2023 by financial services advisor SmartAsset in 2023

Is it necessary to obtain NOC for completing in-service Ph.D in India?

I have a problem related to my in-service Ph.D.:

I completed my Ph. D course work in March 2017,

joined as an assistant Professor on 16 November 2017,

got my Ph.D registration on 14 December 2017 and

got my Ph.D award in 2021.

I have completed my PhD without taking any study leave, but took official leave (on casual leave) from my college for attending the thesis pre-submission and final defense viva voce. So, I have not obtained an NOC from the Director of Higher and Technical Education. Now my problem is that the Directorate of higher and technical education has put my Ph.D increment on hold for not obtaining NOC for doing Ph.D. So, my question is: Is it necessary to Obtain NOC for Ph.D if the scholar has already completed the course work before joining the service? Kindly help me in this regard. Or, can someone enlighten me with UGC norms in this regard?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi, I'm afraid the short answer is yes (based on anecdotal evidence, hence not posting an answer). I hope you do get some relief in this case, but I'm not aware of the route you'd need to follow for that. Good luck. –  AppliedAcademic Commented Mar 6, 2022 at 18:17
  • When you applied for casual leave what reason did you cite? –  user49827 Commented Mar 8, 2022 at 3:37
  • @Shahab The reasons were clearly mentioned for Ph. D thesis submission and viva, resp. –  gete Commented Mar 8, 2022 at 3:39
  • You may apply for exemption to the directorate for obtaining NOC based on the above point and that your phd began before joining service (treating coursework is part of the phd programme). Hopefully they will respond positively. –  user49827 Commented Mar 8, 2022 at 3:46
  • @Shahab yes. I will request to DHTE based on your suggestion. The subject of the application would be "Request for Exemption of NOC". –  gete Commented Mar 8, 2022 at 7:20

NOC code required for PhD stream application

  • Thread starter Atom Wang
  • Start date Apr 20, 2013

Dear everyone, I am a 3rd year PhD student studying at university of Toronto. I have studied my undergrad at university of toronto too. it's a 4 year bachelor in science. I don't have any former work experience - i only have two internships called Co-OPs and i don't think they count as the cic said they are "study experience" rather than working I have submitted my application for PR twice now. Every time i called the CIC, the agents told me that i do not need work experience and as long as i have my letter of assesstation, i'll be fine. however, my application has been refused, again - with the highlight, for both times: please include the appropriate four digit NOC codes for each of your specified work experiences. for more info... So here, i'm gonna ask some really stupid questions: 1. By any chance the agents are wrong, where in reality, work experience is still required for this application? 2. If not, what would the NOC be for a PHD student? 3. does COOP count or no? I have read the eligibility stuff. I also understand there is a specific thread for the phd stream topic - but that is 500+page long. I'm still reading but meanwhile i would appreciate if someone would reduce my workload just a little bit. Thank you.

NOC for work as RA is 4012. You need to obtain 67 points. You do not need work experience to apply, but if you don't get 67 points without work experience, then you need it in order to jump over the 67 points.

asbereth said: There is the minimum requirement of having to have obtained at least 1 year of full-time continuous work experience (or equivalent) within the last 10 years, so even if you have more than 67 points, without at least 1 year of continuous work experience (or continuous 1,950 hours of work experience within the last 10 years, claiming at max 37.5 hours per week), your application will still be refused. And co-op doesn't count, but RA/TA does (NOC 4012), provided that you got paid for doing it. Post your questions on the PhD stream thread, and chances are, most of them would have been answered by someone earlier And since you have a Bachelor's degree from Canada, I suggest you wait until the new point system is announced on May. The cap for PhD stream will be reset, and the point system completely overhauled, benefiting those with Canadian experience and Canadian degrees. If you max out language points (24 points), have a Bachelor's degree (21 points) from Canada (5 points), one year of work experience (9 points), and less than 34 years old (12 points), that's already more than enough to qualify (you'd have 71 points). The reason why people like you should definitely consider waiting until May 4 to apply is because you have a Canadian education, which doesn't need to be evaluated for equivalence. Your main hurdle would be to obtain a super strong letter of reference (noc4012 is an expert for that ), which lists all the main duties of NOC 4012. There have been A LOT (cannot be overstated) of rejections within the past year due to job description mismatch, so you better be extremely careful in detailing your duties and responsibilities. Post your stuff on the PhD stream thread, so others can review your letter before you apply. Click to expand...

As asbereth kindly noted, you need 1 year work as skilled worker. If you are a grad student with TA or RA assignments, then you can apply as NOC 4012. You need a letter from HR which indicates hours worked, pay, and duration and a letter which details your duties according to http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/noc/english/noc/2011/Profile.aspx?val=4&val1=4012

By the way, you may think you have 69 points, but as is the case with many applicants here, the CIC may award you less points. So it's better you do two things: try to get as many more points as you possibly can; and share your details here so that seniors can advise you how to make sure your points count through documentation or if you made a mistake in awarding yourself those points.

If your application is eligible for processing, it will then be assessed against minimum requirements. Your work experience must be: at least one year, continuous, and paid (full-time or the equivalent in part-time); AND a skill type 0 (managerial occupations) or skill level A (professional occupations) or B (technical occupations and skilled trades) on the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC) list. Click to expand...
asbereth said: Do you have your application ready? If so, you have now the choice on re-applying before or after May 4. It would not make much difference for you since you don't have to have your Bachelor's degree evaluated (it's a Canadian degree), but you need the 1 year of work experience, there is no other way (I think it's impressive that you have 69 points without any work experience, but having one year of work experience is a must). So besides eligibility for processing (2 years as full-time PhD student), you need to satisfy the minimum requirements too. I have a feeling that, if you send your application after May 4, it would actually have faster processing. So it's probably better to wait until May 4? Also, get your supervisor to write you a reference letter with duties and responsibilities for TA/RA (and other things they need as per the checklist). Check the link noc4012 posted for these descriptions. Click to expand...

So your PhD is not funded? Any form of funding (taxable or non-taxable) would count, provided that these funds are given for you to conduct your research or teaching duties. And yes, you will still need continuous 1,950 hours of work experience (or 1,560 hours, depending whether they will consider 30 or 37.5 hours per week as 'full-time'), even under the new rules. Also, what did you do in co-op? Did your NOC number fall under either skill level A, B, or O? The requirement that work experience cannot be gained while studying full-time is for CEC, and FSW has no such stipulation (as far as I know), so you may want to give it a shot as well. Keep in mind that it does not guarantee that they will accept your co-op, so it's hard to say. I would still suggest to use your TA/RA, since even a year of TA/RA would still be enough to qualify you above 67 points, provided you max out language points, and have a Canadian degree.

Atom Wang said: my phd is funded. each yr 27000 CAD. so i guess this counts? my coop is kinda lame... the first one is i worked at a pharmaceutical company for only 4 months and it is under skill level abo. the second one is a summer studentship, and its funded so its also under RA i guess. another question is that since there will be more competition after may 4 due to ppl are going to apply also thru unphd stream, shall i still apply before may 4? Click to expand...
asbereth said: Yes, if your PhD is funded, then collect all of the T4 and T4A forms you received since the beginning of your PhD, and begin documenting your number of hours. Ask your supervisor or department head to write you a letter (actually, write the letter yourself, then have them just sign it on department letterhead). This is the most important part of your application, the letter of reference that will contain job descriptions. If you make mistakes here, and A LOT OF PEOPLE did make mistakes on this part, you will be rejected. So draft your letter and share it with us in the PhD stream thread so others can review it. In the present circumstances, where you cannot trust someone blindly, everyone wishes to be safe from any kind of fraud or trouble. A NOC letter will assure your safety from any kind of trouble. Read the complete article to get a clear view of the noc application format.

A No objection certificate is a kind of character certificate issued by an employer against the employee. In the case of any agreement, it acts as a green signal to move forward with the deal. The presence of a no objection certificate is proof that there are no further dues left in the case of assets. When an employer issues a no-objection certificate, it means that the company does not have any issues with its employee leaving it and joining another company.

NOC application format

What is a NOC?

A noc is a no-objection certificate that is issued by an organization to an employee or student and states that the organization has no objection regarding the employee or student. A no objection certificate is a legal document that acts as proof that you have completed all your responsibilities. You can demand a no objection certificate in the case of –

  • Another country’s visa
  • A property agreement
  • Upon completion of the loan agreement
  • Tenant acquisition
  • Change of job
  • Second-hand vehicles

To acquire a no objection certificate, you have to write a letter to the organization requesting a no objection certificate. A no objection certificate is always written on the letterhead of a company. A no objection certificate can be issued by your employer, your bank, an RTO, etc.

The application is written in a formal format, and the tone of the letter is modest and respectful.
