Delta operates a variety of cabin classes on its aircraft, including economy, Premium Select, first class and Delta One seats.

Like most airlines, Delta will allow you to select your seat when booking, though the cost to do so and any upcharges will vary depending on the flight you’re taking. Those flying with families and wondering “does Delta seat families together?” are in luck. Delta does its best to seat families together, even after check-in.

According to an analysis of airline fees by NerdWallet, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines charge the least for seat selection, while budget airlines Frontier and Spirit charge the most.

Delta sits in the middle, charging an average of $15-plus for each flight that you'd like to select a seat for. The cost will vary depending on the type of ticket you book with the airline — which we'll discuss next.

How much is seat selection on Delta Air Lines? That will depend on the ticket type you’re purchasing, be it basic economy, main cabin, Premium Select (premium economy), first class or Delta One.

Basic economy

Basic economy tickets have the most restrictions of any Delta ticket, and this extends to seat selection. Those who book basic economy tickets won't be able to select seats; instead, a seat will be randomly assigned to each passenger after check-in. This includes families and groups who are traveling together — expect to be split up when booking a basic economy ticket.

If you reserve a basic economy ticket, it’s possible to purchase a specific seat starting seven days before departure. Pricing for this varies by trip and is priced by segment.

Main cabin seating, also known as regular economy, includes complimentary seat selection. As a main cabin customer, you also have the option to purchase an upgrade to preferred or Delta Comfort Plus seats while remaining an economy class passenger.

You can also book upgraded economy tickets with additional seat selection perks:

Main Cabin Preferred: Main Cabin Preferred seats are functionally the same as regular main cabin seats. The difference lies in the seat location; Main Cabin Preferred seats are typically window and aisle seats nearer to the front of the plane, plus exit rows. These are the least expensive upgrades from standard economy seating.

Comfort Plus: When available, a Delta Comfort Plus ticket can be purchased directly while booking and the price will include seat selection. The cost to upgrade is higher than for a preferred seat in main cabin. Comfort Plus features more legroom than main cabin and offers passengers dedicated overhead bins. In addition, Comfort Plus guests will receive complimentary beer and wine on all domestic and short-haul international flights.

Main cabin passengers can also choose to upgrade to a Comfort Plus seat either before or after purchasing their ticket.

Premium Select

Premium Select is Delta’s version of premium economy, with larger seats and better recline, two free checked bags, earlier boarding and premium extras. Those who book Premium Select can choose any seat within the cabin for no additional fee.

Delta One and first class

Both first class and Delta One ticket holders can choose any seat within their cabin for free. These spacious seats come with two free checked bags, premium snacks and meals, priority boarding, and a dedicated flight attendant.

Those who have joined the Delta SkyMiles program and earned Medallion elite status will receive seating benefits on their flights.

Main Cabin Preferred

When booking main cabin tickets, all four tiers of elite status members can select main cabin preferred seats for no additional charge.

Comfort Plus

Platinum and Diamond level elite members (the two highest tiers) can choose Comfort Plus seats shortly after ticketing for free. Mid-tier Gold members, meanwhile, will be able to select these seats starting 72 hours prior to departure, and low-level Silver members can pick from available Comfort Plus seats starting 24 hours before departure.

Delta elite members will also receive upgrades on select first class and Delta One flights depending on their elite status.

You can find Delta Air Lines seating without needing to book a flight. To do so, you’ll want to first search for your preferred route on Delta’s website. On the search results page, you’ll find a variety of flights from which to choose.

Each flight presents a seat map, which you can preview by selecting "Seats."

Once you’ve picked "Seats," you’ll be taken to a new page that shows a live preview of your aircraft’s seats.

You’ll also be able to view the seat map during the booking process. Once you’ve selected your flight, you’ll be taken to another page prompting you to pick a seat.

How do I choose my seat on Delta?

During booking

The process for reserving a Delta seat is fairly simple. As we mentioned above, you’ll be able to pick seats when booking your flights on the website; Delta will automatically prompt you to do so before checkout.

You may not be able to select seats on codeshare flights, which are operated by Delta’s partners . In this case, you’ll want to go directly to the other airlines’ webpage to manage your seat selection.

After booking

If you need to choose or alter your seat after you’ve booked your flight, go to "My Trips" on the Delta homepage.

If you’re logged in already, you’ll be able to view all the trips you have booked with Delta. You’ll find seat selection options by going down to the "Passenger Information" section.

Of the many things that make restrictive basic economy fares a bummer, the inability to pick a seat is the worst. It often leaves you stuck in a middle seat between strangers, rows away from your travel companion.

But if you're flying Delta, there are a few ways you can still pick your seat. You'll have to pay up with one method. And with some vigilance and luck, there's another way you can snag a better seat for free. 

Read on to learn how it's done. And if you want to take it to the next level, keep reading to learn how you can  beat Delta basic economy fares altogether and make it even better.  

The Basics of Delta Basic Economy

Option #1 to pick a seat: pay up, option #2: last chance at a free seat, other ways to beat delta basic economy fares.

Delta was the first of the major airlines to roll out no-frills basic economy fares way back in 2013.

And while these Delta basic economy fares come with some major restrictions – you ‘ll have to pay to cancel a flight for a Delta eCredit and you won't even earn any SkyMiles or credits toward Delta Medallion Status – Delta's spin on basic economy is still more generous than many of its competitors. The airline has always allowed a carry-on, while others like United Airlines and JetBlue don't.

• Baggage:  Get a carry-on bag and personal item for free; pay $30 each way for a checked bag (or $60 each way to Europe).
• Seat Selection:  Seats are typically automatically assigned at check-in or at the gate, but keep reading to see how you can pick your seat!
• Boarding:  Boards last in  Delta’s boarding order.
• Earning SkyMiles: No, Delta basic economy fares no longer earn SkyMiles
• Earning  Delta Medallion Status : No, basic economy flights no longer earn Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) , Medallion Qualifying Segments (MQSs), or Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs)
• Upgrades: Not eligible for complimentary upgrades or paid upgrades to first class or Delta Comfort Plus . Even if you have Delta Medallion status, you will not be eligible for upgrades.
• Ticket Changes and Cancellation: Only free within 24 hours of booking. Main cabin tickets (and higher) are now eligible for free changes.

It's clear these no-frills fares aren't going anywhere. Delta has doubled down on them coming out of the pandemic, charging more than ever before to upgrade to a main cabin fare. Delta went where no other airline has gone by nixing the ability to earn redeemable SkyMiles or status with the airline when you buy a basic economy ticket.

But it's not all bad news … especially when there are two little-known ways you can still get a seat with Delta basic economy.

For years, Delta hasn't allowed basic economy flyers to pick a seat in advance. The airline's own policies and warnings make clear it's not possible.

But that's not exactly true. Delta generally allows basic economy passengers to pick a seat starting seven days before departure – for a fee.  A Delta spokeswoman confirmed that the airline rolled out this ability “partway through 2018.”

“Delta  does provide an option for  Basic   Economy customers to purchase a seat assignment because customers have told us that having a seat assignment further in advance than 24 hours from departure is important to them,” a spokeswoman previously told us.

The fees for picking a seat with a basic economy ticket vary by route – seemingly from as low as $10 to $45 or more per flight. And you have to purchase a seat assignment separately for each leg of a trip. The norm for years was $29 per seat, whether you pick an aisle, window, or middle seat. But lately, we've seen much cheaper seats available for purchase.  

But that's not always the case. Sometimes it's a lot more – like this flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to Las Vegas (LAS).  

Once the seat selection window opens starting seven days before your flight, log in to your Delta account and check on your flight. You'll be able to hit the “Select Seat” – a function that's typically grayed out for basic economy passengers. Or just pull up the flight on your Delta app and hit “Purchase Seat.”  

Just keep in mind the selection may be somewhat limited, and the price per seat may vary. Here was what was available for an older flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to New York-LaGuardia (LGA) about four days before takeoff.  

In this case, the seats are almost entirely at the back half of the plane. On the bright side, there were plenty of window and aisle seats available. And no matter which you chose in this case, it would cost $29.00.

But if Delta is charging $30 a seat, that's not a good deal. Consider this: Delta typically charges about $70 to $80 more for a main cabin round-trip fare , allowing you to pick your seats for free. So you may be able to get a seat assignment on each leg of the trip for the same price, plus the other benefits that main cabin fares have over basic economy like earning SkyMiles and free change and cancellation.

Still, if you want to make sure you're sitting next to your companion, it's worth considering. And if you're willing to roll the dice, there may be a way to do it for free.

Airlines have conditioned us to expect next to nothing for a basic economy fare. But it doesn’t always have to be that way. Depending on how many seats are still open on the plane after check-in opens 24 hours before take-off (or 48 hours on international flights), you’ve got a window to make a choice for free.

Once check-in opens, basic economy flyers on Delta have a chance to pick the best of what seats are left. Just how many seats are left will vary wildly by route, time of day, time of year, and other factors. And these days, many flights are completely full which means you may not have the ability to pick, period.

If you're lucky, you might have a nearly empty cabin to choose from. Other times, the entire cabin may be booked and you'll be left to get a seat assignment at the gate. It just depends.

But if you want to avoid a middle seat or get seats together, you have to watch the seating chart like a hawk. Check the seating chart on the site or via app every hour or so for the few hours after the check-in window opens, starting 24 hours before a domestic flight is scheduled to depart. And check again the morning before your flight. And then again. As other passengers move around the cabin or change their flights, better seats may open up.

On a flight a few years ago from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to Las Vegas (LAS), there were just a few dreaded middle seats open when online check-in opened 24 hours in advance. But after checking the seat map religiously for the next few hours, it happened: There was an open aisle seat.  

So I chose it immediately. And, as luck would have it, there was another seat just across the aisle for my friend. It couldn’t have worked out better.

This is the best-case scenario – it won't always go so smoothly, especially if your flight is full. But it can pay off huge to watch closely and snag a seat.

These options to pick a seat are phenomenal. They can solve one of the biggest sources of frustration behind basic economy fares. But you can take it even further and take even more of the pain out of basic economy.

Delta’s co-branded American Express can be a powerful weapon to beat basic economy fares. There are several options in the suite of SkyMiles credit cards, so read up on  which one is right for you . But no matter which one you hold,  it will get you a free checked bag on every Delta flight – along with up to eight others traveling on your reservation. The one exception is the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card, which won’t get you free bags (terms apply) .

That means you won’t have to pay  $30 each way for a bag . And Delta doesn’t even require you to charge your flight to your Delta card to get this perk. It’s attached to your SkyMiles number, so you’ll always get it so long as you keep your card open.

And while you can always bring a carry-on bag , Delta basic economy can still be difficult because you board last – the overhead bins may fill up before you get on the plane. Carrying a Delta credit card helps here, too. Delta’s co-branded credit cards also get you priority boarding. By holding one of these cards,  you’ll always board in the fifth zone  even when flying basic economy.  

As an example, let’s consider the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card . Like almost every Delta credit card, it gets you a free checked bag plus priority boarding. And it comes with an introductory annual fee of $0, and then just $99 a year after that (see rates & fees ).

Do the math, and you'll see that you can come out way ahead in your first year with the card on baggage savings alone. And once that fee kicks in, the savings on checked baggage start after just two round-trip flights each year.

Bottom Line

You can never count on getting a choice seat when flying basic economy. With a basic economy fare, you get the best of what’s left. And sometimes, a middle seat far away from your companion is all there is.

But if you're willing to pay up, you can get a better seat. And with some vigilance and luck, you can beat Delta's basic economy game for free.

Def. appreciate this one, thanks! I had no idea that you could choose a seat online with Basic Econ after you check in for a Delta flight.

I haven’t flown on an airplane in over 20 year’s, what happened to military’s discounts, went to Las Vegas and back, also had to pay $30.00 each way for my luggage

I understand having to pay to ensure you can sit with your companion, but if I’m understanding this correctly, even if I fork out an extra 30$ to sit together, I will still be in zone 4 if I have basic economy, correct? (my concern is that they will make me check my carry-on and since I bought two separate tickets, I do not want to have to go to baggage claim to get my bags and go thru security to come back in for my next flight)

Booked a flight from ATL to JFK. 72 hours before flight bought a seat as i’m flying with my family and really not so much left to choose. And they make good money on selling those seats, damn should pay for baggage too, next time will consider different airlines to fly with.

Yeah, didn’t realize Delta would nickel and dime the seats like this—-next time, I’ll travel with another airline. They clearly see that I have a travel companion, they could have easily programmed us to sit together! This is beyond annoying!!!!

Nope, not Finnair, not Icelandair, I’ve experienced! I thonk SAS and Norwegian are quite the same as the otner Nordic countries.

Actually quite a few airlines let you sit together. Southwest is all open cabin but it works great. Jet blue sells seat gor $11.00, united let’s you get seats and sas is a fojestic aitline, for norwsy lol

To avoid basic economy, I save up enough to buy a seat in the comfort class. Since I don’t have a credit card I signed up to join the sky miles. Still trying to build up my sky miles to earn a seat bin first class.

If you’ve done the 24-hour check-in from home, that’s when you’ll be able to start selecting any remaining seats for free.

Certainly not trying for clickbait, Dave. You’re right this is an older post, but the information is all up to date. And we always hear from travelers frustrated about basic economy, especially when it comes to seat selection. Plenty of readers may have missed this guide when we originally posted it last spring.

If that’s true, it’s a recent change. Even just two weeks ago, nearly all basic economy fares were still able to purchase a seat assignment starting 7 days before departure.

I fly to Atlanta to visit my daughter and family by myself. I am a 77-year-old grandma who the airline company always tends to put me between two strangers! Why? I’m flying Down in March and I will try to pick a seat after I check in online. I hope I can figure it out!

Delta needs to stop this bullshit period they too damg expensive already

Middle seats on delta are always left open now. Also, ask the gate agent if you can sit together. If there is room, they will do it.

Delta does this for one reason and one reason alone: ancillary fees collected by airlines are not taxed. Only the fare is taxed. So it’s 100% gravy for every person who pays for a seat assignment.

Oh yes they dress it up as offering “choice” but behind the curtains lurks a pure profit motive. It’s a business. No problem with that but call it what it is…a money grab.

I swear I’m gonna start my own blog. Every time I read one, it seems quite clear that intelligence and writing skills aren’t really required.

This has to be one of the dumbest ones yet. You entitle the article “How You Can Still Pick A Seat With A Delta Basic Economy Fare” and your first “tip” is to PAY for the seat. Seriously? How stupid are you? Or are you writing crap and getting paid for clickbait?

As the article says, Delta explicitly warns that you cannot pick a seat, period, when buying a basic economy fare – whether free or paying for it. It’s worth pointing out that you can pay for a seat if it’s important to you, especially considering Delta has never publicly announced that it’s an option. And the second method is a clever trick to get a seat for free.

Question for clarification. If you don’t have a seat assigned (pre-paid) the process is as follows? Check-in, get Delta random assigned seat, at that point you have the ability to change seats, do so before you print boarding pass. Correct?

Correct! You can typically move to any other remaining open seats from the time you check-in until boarding begins.

Any insight on how Delta would handle a group of three (2 adults and a 2.5 year old for a total of 3 seats) in basic economy during COVID times? Given the middle seat blocks, it’d make sense that they’d naturally group us together to maximize seating (effectively gaining a spot on the pane) but should I take the risk?

This is tough. You’re right that I think Delta would like to seat you all together to maximize available seating. But Delta would also like you to pay for the “privilege” of getting seated together. If you’re concerned about sitting together, I’d recommend just paying up for the main cabin fare so you can guarantee it.

My wife and I fly Delta Economy often, I try to book our seats at the same time, if for some reason that isn’t possible I then contact Delta and link our bookings. Once this is done gate agents have done everything possible to put is in seats next to each other and if not next to each other close. Unlike United which won’t allow any changes, even by a gate agent.

I have done the 24 hour/check in pick your seat for years. It’s a gamble, but on short flights not a big deal to me. I have a terrific chance of improving my seat including moving forward in the plane. If you really need to know your seat ahead of time, they are happy to take your money. I like the fun of checking 24 hrs prior. On March 15th, 2020 this paid off big time being “bumped” on British Air to first class from Heathrow to O’Hare. On check in I noticed open seats in front for no fee and did it. Our president had just announced closing of European airports and they filled the back of the 747 with stressed out Americans. I truly lucked out. Having a frequent flyer card is helpful in times like these or maybe just dumb luck. 🙂

Anybody at all know if it is possible to pay for an upgrade from Basic Economy to First Class seating, if the seating is available, at the gate or during check-in? I don’t know that I can weather a 4 hour flight from Detroit to Phoenix in Basic Economy.

I tried the tips here when flying Translatlantic just a couple of months prior to COVID hitting. No 7 day window to “buy” a seat. Seat assigned at BNA for BNA -DTW leg but had to get a seat assigned at DTW gate for leg to Europe. Interestingly, all the basic seat tickets had been printed out in advance, presumably by gate agents, and were sifted through to get the one that matched your passport. Hard to believe that Delta couldn’t assign me seats for all legs of the outward flight at check in at BNA.

There seem to be a few times where Delta doesn’t allow seat selection in advance, but those instances are few and far between.

Hi Kyle, I’m flying Iah-atl-ath soon. For the international flights, check in starts at 48 hours. Is that the atl-ath leg? I’ll have to check in twice? I also bought 2 separate tickets in BE for my bf and I. Trying to figure out the best and cheapest way to sit together

If you booked iah-atl-ath as one ticket, you should be able to check in for the entire itinerary at one time. You may be able to pay for seats starting a week before departure, but that’s not always the case with international BE fares.

I purchased 2 basic economy tickets for myself and my daughter we are traveling to ATL. She is 10 years old. Do you recommend me purchasing two seats or do I just do the 24 hour check in advance and they will assign us seats at the gate?Thank you

If you want to ensure you’re sitting next to your daughter, I’d recommend paying for seats. These days, most domestic flights are full which would make it much harder to move around the cabin and get seats together after check-in.

It should be first come, first serve. Period. Tickets are not cheap nowadays, and we aught to get our money’s worth. We expect some decency from those we do business with. Yes, those with status should have benefits, but if they want seats, they should act early enough. Those who book early should be at an advantage. Airlines should not hold seats for anyone who MAY decide to fly.

Option 1 is not really a choice, Delta doesn’t allow you to pay for seat selection under basic economy. I just flew them in December and that wasn’t an option. How long will you keep recycling this old article?

This isn’t true – I just paid for seats with a basic economy fare and the process was as described in this article. The website isn’t the most intuitive (and the seats were expensive!) but it’s definitely an option.

This article doesn’t seem to have accurate information anymore. I got the Delta Gold Amex card because of this article and the baggage policy, but seems that if the flight is not ‘operated’ by Delta then it’s a moot point and you have to pay the baggage fees of the operating airline… definitely feels like a scam since I bought my international flight on the Delta website, with my amex card and miles account, only to find out during the 24 hour check in period that due to my flight being operated by air france and klm, that my baggage waiver doesn’t apply here. Go figure! Definitely going to try to fight it when I return, but these airlines and ‘partnerships’ really don’t help the customer in any way… and the blurb is hidden so far in the fine print that when I called Delta the day of my flight to complain, even they were confused and had to go to two different supervisors who said just try to fight it when you get back… ugh!! Definitely canceling this card before my one year mark and the unnecessary annual fee that got me nowhere!

This part about KLM and other partners not honoring the AMEx gold is everywhere, and not hidden at all. It was in Kyle’s initial story about this subject. We are in Kona Hawaii and it takes two overnight flights to Europe. We leave on Delta to Seattle and I will check my bag at that time and use the AmEx gold. Coming home however, we will going through their partner KLM where I think it’s not going to work. But I will try. I am canceling my card though after this flight. I don’t wanna pay the $99!

You can’t check in for an international flight more than 24 hours before flight time.

Does anyone know how much seat selection is for transatlantic flight to Europe? I contacted Delta’s customer support and they won’t tell me.

Not sure it will work with Delta but it has worked for me twice with United economy, traveling internationally. I just call, about a month out. Call and speak to a customer service agent and ask them to assign seats and they always have done it for me! I will try that again before looking at the seat map online.

Yes, Airlines Do Have the Right to Change Your Seat Without Warning

Here's what to do when it happens.

When right-wing pundit Ann Coulter resorted to complaining on Twitter about having her seat moved on a 2017 Delta flight, she gave the world a golden example of how not to behave.

Perhaps she wasn’t fully aware of her rights — or the airline’s — but the tweetstorm that unfolded reminds us why it’s always important to know your rights as a passenger.

When you purchase an airline seat, you are required to acknowledge that you agree to the contract of carriage, a legally binding agreement between you and the airline, usually by checking a box next to the phrase “I agree to the terms and conditions of the contract of carriage” or some variation thereof.

Delta’s contract of carriage states : “Delta may substitute alternate Carriers or aircraft, change its schedules, delay or cancel flights, change seat assignments, and alter or omit stopping places shown on the ticket as required by its operations in Delta’s sole discretion.”

When you buy a plane ticket, the airline is only obligated to get you from point A to point B. Everything else that comes with it (reserved seating, overhead bin space, baggage allowance, and food and beverage service) is at the discretion of the airline. Because you’re not buying an actual seat — you’re purchasing transportation.

What to Do When an Airline Moves Your Seat

When you’re asked by a flight attendant or gate agent to change seats, it’s usually to help families sit together, allow caregivers to sit next to patients, or accommodate an air marshal or other airline employee. They also might ask you to move for safety reasons or to help redistribute the weight balance of the aircraft, especially on smaller planes.

If it happens to you, respond politely and graciously. Over the years, I’ve been asked countless times to move seats and have done so without complaining. Nearly every time, the flight attendant thanked me for my willingness to be flexible with free bottles of wine or a snack.

Your Boarding Pass Is Your Assigned Seat

If a gate agent comes onboard and hands you a new boarding pass, that is the seat you are required to sit in, regardless of how much you paid for your ticket or the class of service you purchased. The gate agent has supreme power of seating assignments for every flight and dictates who sits where. If they ask you to move, do it.

You May Be Entitled to a Refund

If you’re downgraded from a seat with extra legroom to a regular economy seat, the airline will reimburse you the difference. In Coulter’s case, Delta refunded her the $30 extra fee she paid for the Delta Comfort+ seat that was given to another passenger.

The contract of carriage for American Airlines , as another example, states that you can request a refund for a variety of reasons , including getting re-booked on a flight that causes you to miss a connection, or if you get moved from a preferred seat to a non-preferred seat or a preferred aisle/window seat to a preferred middle seat. Those “preferred” seats refer to the coveted seats near the front of the economy cabin or in emergency exit rows that typically cost extra.

If your seat gets moved and you feel you are owed a refund, contact the airline’s customer service department to request one.

Delta Air Lines ‘ boarding procedures are notoriously confusing. As of changes implemented May 1, 2024, there is a mix of 10 numbered and named boarding groups , along with pre-boarding for certain customers and early boarding for others.

We can only assume this leads to some cranky passengers who, for example, might be in Main Cabin 1 but see 6 groups of people get on the plane ahead of them.

Here are the details of who is eligible to board the plane in each of the groups that Delta uses so you’ll know what to expect. You’ll never be that cranky passenger wondering why you aren’t on board yet!

If you have any concerns about when your group is boarding, the Fly Delta app has a virtual queuing feature to let you know when your seat is boarding.

When departing Amsterdam (AMS) and Paris (CDG) on Delta flights , Silver Medallion members will not have their own priority boarding group. This is due to the boarding policies of Air France and KLM which operate at these 2 airports as their main hubs.

Have the Right Credit Card

Cardholders of Delta Gold card, Delta Platinum card, Delta Reserve card, Delta Gold Business card, Delta Platinum Business card, and Delta Reserve Business card will automatically receive Zone 5 priority boarding as long as their SkyMiles numbers are on their reservations.

This benefit applies to the basic cardholder and is not available to additional authorized users on the card account. Up to 9 passengers traveling on the same reservation as the basic cardmember will also be given Zone 5 priority boarding.

Earn Elite Status

Taking flight with Delta, one of the largest airlines in the United States, has several cabins to pick from, whether you're traveling for business and need to sit up the front or you're traveling away with friends for the weekend in Las Vegas, and need a carry-on, there's plenty to pick from to suit every budget.

The onboard experience for all cabins has improved dramatically over the years, with many aircraft now featuring seat-back entertainment, USB charging ports, and meals either included in the fare or available for purchase. Onboard Delta, there are five different 'experiences' to choose from; let's look closer.

Basic economy

Exactly as it sounds, the Basic economy is a low-fare option with restrictions. Refunds and upgrades are not available and are best for those with firm travel plans without changing. Essential economy travelers are provided a main cabin seat and complimentary snacks such as nonalcoholic beverages, such as coffee from Starbucks or soda. And connect to Delta WiFi to check the status of your flight. However, no seats will be assigned until after check-in, and you will be the last to board and will not be eligible for upgrades. No miles are earned, and no credit will be put toward your SkyMiles Medallion status.

Basic economy provides great value for solo travelers and those who can pack light. However, this fare type has many restrictions on changes or refunds, so be sure that your travel plans are unlikely to change.

Both airlines are trying hard to win over more premium passengers.

This is the next step from the Basic economy; this fare type gives you much more control. Holders of a main cabin ticket can select their seats in advance (some for a fee) and earn miles on non-award travel. To make it easy, there are no change fees, and you can easily manage your trip changes without change fees for tickets originating in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. You can receive an e-credit upon cancelation of your flight, minus a cancelation fee.

You can pick what suits you best with increased seat choice and selection. Are you window or aisle? Or are you traveling with a group and want to be all seated together? This is all possible in the Main Cabin. You are also eligible to earn miles, and can earn status towards your Medallion Status, you can also opt for an upgrade if your points permit, and can enjoy the premium cabins if available on your selected flight.

Delta Comfort+

Booking a Delta Comfort+ ticket is where the added extras kick in . You'll be one of the first onboards, with priority boarding, and given that you will likely be seated at the front of the cabin, you can disembark swiftly off the aircraft. Your seats have more legroom, so you can stretch out, sit back, and relax at 30,000 feet, and if you're traveling with cabin luggage, you have a dedicated overhead bin to store your bags. Other extras included in this fare type include a pillow, blanket, and amenity kit if traveling on long-haul flights.

Domestic first class

Delta offers two cabins on domestic aircraft: the main economy cabin and First. Hard product-wise, the First cabin is laid out in a 2-2 configuration. Each seat features a leather recliner, and Delta's newest A321neos even have seat dividers and pod-style privacy guards. Travelers in First enjoy a broader, more spacious seat and increased flexibility to change or cancel their ticket without a significant penalty. The seat allows you to stretch out up to eight more inches than economy class seating and has a 5.4-inch recline. An 11-inch seat back screen is also at your arm's length to enjoy onboard entertainment.

With a dedicated flight attendant, you have snacks and drinks whenever you're ready, and with built-in power outlets and Wi-Fi on most flights, you can stay connected and catch up on the latest news from around the world. Delta Premium Select

Better known as premium economy, Premium Select is offered on Delta's widebodies and got a perky upgrade in 2022 . The seats are similar to the domestic first class seats, with leather recliners, 13" entertainment screens, and an adjustable legrest.

This newest cabin design is there to help you arrive refreshed at your next destination, with spacious seats and amenities. This cabin has a seat with a deeper recline, a standard economy class seat, and an adjustable leg and footrest. With expedited airport experiences, travelers in this cabin receive Sky Priority service, which includes being one of the first onboard, priority baggage, and accelerated check-in. You will receive a hot towel onboard and beverages of your choice before a complimentary meal from their elevated menu.

Delta Premium Select: Is It Worth It?

Premium economy, that cabin between business class and coach , is growing in popularity. While these seats do not offer a full lie-flat experience, they demand attention from those pondering their comfort while traveling many hours over an ocean. Now that Delta's incarnation — Premium Select — is available on four different aircraft types, it's time to answer the question: Is it worth it ?

International carriers have outfitted jets with premium economy for decades , though legacy US carriers (American, Delta and United) waited around to make sure the business case was sound before planning interior changes . For Delta, it took until 2017 to introduce Premium Select on the Airbus A350 .

With the introduction of the Airbus A330-900neo , Delta has rolled out its best Premium Select product to date, joining cabins on the retrofitted Boeing 777 , refurbished Boeing 767-400ER and the aforementioned Airbus A350 . Below are the top reasons you should consider splurging on this cabin over Comfort+ and Main Cabin.

It's way less cramped

The most alluring reason to spring for Premium Select — which is typically double the price of a main cabin economy ticket — is the sheer space. Don't let seat width fool you. While Premium Select seats on Delta's A330-900neo are 18.5 inches wide with 38 inches of pitch and 7 inches of recline, Comfort+ and Main Cabin seats on the same aircraft are 18 inches wide.

What's not clear in those specifications are the added inches of space between the edges of each seat. In Comfort+ and Main Cabin, the seat cushions are jammed into one another. Where your seat ends, your neighbor's seat immediately begins. There's no breathing room to speak of.

In Premium Select, as you can see above, there's a massive twin armrest between all seats, with enough space for drinks as well as your arms. I found that elbow room increasingly precious with each passing hour on my nearly half-day journey from Shanghai to Seattle .

Then, there's legroom. Premium Select on the A339 offers 38 inches of pitch, compared to 34 in Comfort+ and just 31 to 33 inches in Main Cabin. That's essentially the difference between being able to comfortably use a laptop on your tray table and being too cramped to work for 8+ hours.

Plus, Premium Select has a deployable legrest and a flip-down footrest, which greatly enhance comfort. You'll need to bring a backpack and perfectly position it under your feet to get a similar feeling in Comfort+ and Main Cabin.

Even consuming entertainment is less cramped. While Premium Select passengers on the A339 get a 13.3-inch seatback entertainment screen, Comfort+ and Main Cabin passengers have a 10.1-inch panel. The Premium Select seating configuration (2-2-2 on the 764, 2-3-2 on the A339 and 2-4-2 on the 777/A350) means more aisle seats. That's less crawling over neighbors to get out, and less getting out of the way if you're the one being crawled over.

VIP check-in and boarding

Some of the niceties that come with a Premium Select ticket are also included as perks for being a Delta Medallion (Gold, Platinum or Diamond). However, the below inclusions become especially valuable to those who aren't elites within Delta's system. Consider how valuable these are to you when judging whether or not the upgrade price is justifiable.

• Sky Priority check-in line and boarding line access
• Sky Priority expedited baggage handling and security

The food and service is better

Delta treats Premium Select as its own cabin, for the most part. While you'll still be asked to use the lavatories in the economy section, I very much appreciated having a dedicated flight attendant.

Choosing the Best Credit Card for Delta Flyers

On my 11+ hour flight from Asia back to the United States, I saw two flight attendants who minded the 28 seats in Premium Select aboard the A339, offering bottomless refills on drinks and snacks. Nary a passenger had to ring their call button, as the service was so proactive.

We were also served two full meals (dinner upon departure and breakfast prior to landing) with an ice cream bar in between. Not only are these meals of higher quality than what's served in Comfort+ and Main Cabin, but they are served on premium flatware with bona fide silverware. I found both meals to be very satisfactory, whereas I generally skip economy meals (and thus spend money on food at the airport).

It's better for couples

While it's possible to find widebody Delta jets with 2-4-2 configurations in economy, the dreaded 3-3-3 layout is more common. Nothing squashes the honeymoon vibe quite like a third wheel en route to your destination.

With a greater concentration of seat pairs, Premium Select gives couples a greater shot at sitting together by themselves. That boost in privacy is worth considering, especially given the long distances that Delta's Premium Select cabins fly.

These seat pairs are also a godsend if traveling with an infant in arms . Carving out your own little cocoon and having added space for your toddler to stretch could be the difference between a tolerable jaunt across the ocean and an experience you'd like to forget.

You earn more miles

Typically, Delta Premium Select fares are classed as P, A or G. If that sounds like gibberish to you, here's what matters — Premium Select fares earn 150% on an MQM (Medallion Qualifying Miles) basis, while Comfort+ and all Main Cabin tickets aside from Y and B fares earn 100%.

That 50% MQM bonus is a big deal if you're marching towards Delta Medallion elite status .

Additional considerations

While springing for a Premium Select seat on a longhaul Delta flight is a no-brainer for those with ample disposable income, these are a few granular points to consider before pulling the trigger.

Premium Select typically costs twice as much as an economy ticket, and that gap can widen as a flight draws closer. Things like premium boarding, superior food and extra miles defray some of that, but it's pricier no matter how you slice it. If you're a hardened solo traveler or you're more interested in using your travel budget to fly more places with fewer luxuries, you can pass on Premium Select.

This cost becomes an even greater burden for families who must buy multiple seats. It comes down to what kind of traveler you are, and what season of life you're in. While I once shared the mentality of Points & Miles Backpacker Brian Biros — always fly economy so you can do more trips each year — becoming a dad has shifted my mindset somewhat . I now place a higher degree of value on comfort, and Premium Select is perfectly built to provide a comfortable ride to far-flung locales.

The gap between Comfort+

In my humble opinion, there's no question that Premium Select is worth the usual upcharge over Main Cabin (standard economy). 31 inches of pitch is fairly miserable on a transcontinental flight. On international trips of 8+ hours, it's darn near painful for adults.

On the A330-900neo , for example, Comfort+ (and Main Cabin) are arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration. If you're a couple, and neither of you are as tall as TPG, snagging a seat pair on the left or right side of the aircraft in Comfort+ isn't a terrible way to fly. 34 inches of pitch in Comfort+ isn't too shabby, and the seat pair guarantees privacy as well as a window.

If you're a Delta Medallion elite member and you're able to slide into Comfort+ for free as a perk of your status (versus paying more over standard Main Cabin if you're new to Delta), the choice to pay for Premium Select becomes ever tougher. If this describes you, I'd probably only upgrade to Premium Select if the price difference was 30% or less, or it was a very special trip worth going all out for.

The A330-900neo and 767-400ER advantage

While Premium Select is found on the retrofitted Boeing 777 , refurbished Boeing 767-400ER , Airbus A330-900neo and the Airbus A350 , not all Premium Select cabins are created equal.

Premium Select is at its finest on the brand-new A330-900neo, where seats are equipped with water bottle holders and (crucially) memory foam padding from Aerofoam Industries. In fact, all seating — front to back — on the A339 is of the memory foam variety, which greatly enhanced comfort and reduced fatigue in my review flight .

The A339 also features a unique ceiling light design as you enter into the Premium Select cabin — a nifty element from Airbus dubbed "Airspace." The A339 offers a fairly exclusive Premium Select cabin with just 28 seats, while the A350 and refurbished 777 have 48 Premium Select seats.

Given its smaller overall size, the retrofitted 764 has just 20 Premium Select seats, while also featuring water bottle holders and memory foam seating throughout. That said, the bones of the 764 are older than the brand-new A339.

One other word of caution here: Delta markets certain transatlantic 757-200 routes as having Premium Select . However, these are aircraft with standard recliner-style domestic First Class seats that Delta rebrands on routes such as New York (JFK) to Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF), Ponta Delgada, Portugal (PDL) and Shannon, Ireland (SNN), as well as its service between Boston (BOS) and Lisbon, Portugal (LIS) .

Passengers with Disabilities

Per DOT regulations, passengers are not required to disclose disabilities in order to be assigned bulkhead seats. If a passenger with an undisclosed disability requests a bulkhead seat, Delta will assign a bulkhead seat within the cabin of purchase. Please note: A passenger assigned a bulkhead seat may be reaccommodated if the following passengers with disabilities require the seat:

• A passenger with a fused or immobile leg
• A passenger requires an aisle chair
• A passenger traveling with a service animal (SVAN/ESAN)

Bassinets (SkyCots)

Onboard bassinets, also known as SkyCots, are available free of charge on equipped aircraft for some international flights. SkyCots can be requested, but are not guaranteed.

General guidelines for a SkyCot are as follows:

• Infants must weigh 20 pounds or less and be no longer than 26 inches in length.
• There is a limit of two SkyCots per equipped aircraft.
• SkyCots may be subject to weight restrictions. Advise passenger to inquire at boarding gate as limits vary according to type of SkyCot.
• Infants must be held during take-off and landing and whenever the seat belt light is on.

Requesting a SkyCot

Travel agencies may request a SkyCot using the BSCT SSR in their respective GDS. Requests for a SkyCot are not guaranteed. SkyCots are issued on the departure date, at the gate, on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Assigning Seats for Passengers Requesting a SkyCot

When assigning a seat for a passenger that requested a SkyCot:

• If the appropriate seats are unavailable and/or restricted , assign alternate seats and advise the passenger to request seat change upon check-in at the airport.
• If the appropriate seats are Delta Comfort+ seats , the passenger can choose to purchase the seat/fare or choose alternate seats and request a seat change upon check-in at the airport. If Delta Comfort+ seat fee or fare is purchased and a bassinet is unavailable at time of check-in, the passenger may request a refund of the seat fee/fare difference.
• If the appropriate seats are Preferred Seats , the passenger can choose to purchase the seat or choose alternate seats and request a seat change upon check-in at the airport. If the preferred seat is purchased and a bassinet is unavailable at time of check-in, the passenger may request a refund for the seat fee. 

Flat-Bed Seats  

Flat-bed seats are available in the front cabin on select Delta Mainline Aircraft. Flat-bed seats recline to a fully-flat, 76-82 inch long bed. The following aircraft are equipped with flat-bed seats:

• A330-200 & A330-300
• A330-900 (Flat Bed Suite)
• A350 (Flat Bed Suite)
• B757-200 ER (75S, only)
• B767-300 ER
• B767-400 ER
• B777-200 LR/ER (Flat Bed Suite on select flights)

Infants and Children and Flat-Bed Seats

All types of child restraint devices (CRS) - including the CARES harnesses – are not permitted in flat-bed Delta One and First Class seats. Exception : FAA approved CRS are permitted on the A350 aircraft in all cabins and per Federal Regulations CARES CRS cannot be used at any time on the Delta One flat-bed seats on the B767-300ER aircraft, however, the Car-seat CRS is allowed.

Trained Service Animals and Flat-Bed Seats

Passengers with trained service animals are permitted to occupy flat-bed seat, but may require assistance from the flight attendant.

• When the passenger wants to extend the lie flat bed, the trained service animal should be immediately moved to the aisle while the bed is extending.
• Once extended, the animal will be directed under the seat by its owner.
• Once under the seat, the passenger should be instructed not to move the seat without moving the service animal from below the seat.

Delta One does not have any available room for service animal kennels to be placed under the seat

• Service animals may be anywhere within the passenger's allocated seat space.
• Service animals can sit in the passenger's lap, provided the animal is no larger than a lap child.

If the passenger wants to bring a kennel, it can be place in the onboard stowage location as an assistive device.

Infant Seating  

Infants (children under 2 years).

• Passengers with infants are not permitted to occupy an exit row seat.
• Child restraint systems (CRS) are not allowed in the row forward or behind emergency exit rows.

All types of child restraint systems (CRS) - including the CARES harnesses – are not permitted in flat-bed Delta One and First Class seats. Exception : FAA approved CRS are permitted on the A350 aircraft in all cabins and per Federal Regulations CARES CRS cannot be used at any time on the Delta One flat-bed seats on the B767-300ER aircraft, however, the Car-seat CRS is allowed.

Delta allows our most valued passengers access to preferential advance seat assignments. This service is called Preferred Seating . Preferred Seating is offered on Delta and Delta Connection® flights, subject to availability. View Preferred Seating available in the Policy Library for complete details. 

Travel agents may view available exit row seats through their respective GDS, using the appropriate GDS functional entry to view a seat map. Similarly, exit row seating may be requested and assigned from the seat map if the passenger qualifies, their qualifying frequent flyer number is in their reservation, and the seat is available.

Please note: Delta’s exit row seating in the Main cabin is almost exclusively designated as Preferred Seating.  DL-marketed, OA-operated flights may have different rules related to exit row seating and may not be available to request through the GDS.

Per FAA regulations and to ensure the safety of all passengers traveling on Delta, when assigning exit row seats, please review and adhere to the below criteria and guidelines.

Passenger Qualifications

Delta procedures, to be in compliance with Federal regulations, require passengers seated in designated exit seats be able to assist crewmembers in the event of an emergency.

Passengers  may not sit in an exit seat if it is likely they would be unable to perform certain emergency procedures because they:

• Lack sufficient mobility, strength, or dexterity in both arms and hands, and both legs to reach the emergency exit, operate the exit and exit expeditiously.
• Are less than 15 years of age.
• Lack the ability to understand crew instructions.
• Lack sufficient vision or hearing to perform functions illustrated on the safety/emergency exit card.
• Lack the ability to impart information orally to other passengers.
• Have a condition or responsibility, such as caring for small children that might prevent them from performing the applicable exit row functions. Have a condition that might cause them harm if they perform one or more of the applicable exit row functions.
• Require the use of a seat belt extension. (this limitation is intended to preclude the hazard of entanglement with the additional length of the extension by those passengers attempting to expeditiously exit the aircraft)
• Use a wheelchair or other assist device
• Are using supplemental oxygen or a portable oxygen concentrator.
• Are traveling with an emotional support animal, service animal or family pet.

Note: Passengers in child restraint devices may not be assigned seats in an exit row or in seats directly in front of or behind an exit seat.
