Performance measurement for a unit or an organization is a concrete step in maintaining the quality of services provided by the organization and should be done periodically to assess the strengths and weaknesses of an organization or to assess its efficiency. The assessment of performance depends on several criteria and can therefore be modeled as a multi-criterion decision-making (MCDM) problem. In the present study, the objective is to measure the performance of hostels and mess facilities of a Higher Educational Institute (HEI) through MCDM methods. The study was initiated by conducting a survey, on the basis of which a total of 13 criteria, which affect the performance of the hostel and mess, were identified and were used for qualitative as well as quantitative analysis. While analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used for qualitative analysis, data envelopment analysis (DEA) is used for quantitative analysis. Further, the relevant performing factors for hostels and mess are identified through AHP and DEA-sensitivity analysis (DEA-SA).

A Case Study on Hostel Waste Management

Profile image of Mukul Nama

Related Papers

Waste is generated on daily basis through different activities of human beings, which leads to pollution of the environment, which may have serious implications on the health of the individual. Waste generation is also a big problem in schools and universities. To keep that problem in mind study has been conducted on the campus of CCSHAU, Hisar; with the objective to study the type and volume of waste generated in the girl’s hostels. The study estimated the daily waste generation from girl’s hostels and found waste generation rate was high but the waste collection rate was very low because of the improper ratio between the total number of students and sanitary worker. The waste management system in the university girl’s hostels requires not only an estimation of the solid waste but also an understanding of the students’ habits and behaviour towards managing solid waste.

The risk of unhealthy disposal of solid waste is one of the important problems in many societies. Environmental knowledge attitude practices of young people (like students) appears to be crucial as their point of view ultimately plays an important role in providing solution to future environmental problems. The study was conducted aiming to find knowledge attitude and practices of University students with respect to waste management. Total 300 students were included in this study. Data collected by self administered questionnaire and analyzed, using‘t’ test. It was found that knowledge attitude and practices of University students regarding waste management was low, less favorable and moderate respectively and correlation between knowledge and attitude, attitude and practices was not found, but significant correlation was found between knowledge and practices.

This report moves around in the college mess of BIT-Patna campus, with the objective to know the reason behind the wastage of food in boy’s hostel number-2. In the past decade, food waste has received increased attention on both academic and societal levels. As a cause of negative economic, environmental and social effects, food waste is considered to be one of the sustainability issues that needs to be addressed.so it was very much important to contrast on this serious problem. The present paper presents the results of a literature review and interviews , observations on factors causing student-related food waste in boys hostel number-2 in the Patna campus. Also the brief working system of Sodexo Food Solutions India Pvt. Ltd who works as food serving agent in the hostel is precisely elaborated. The assumed solutions or say suggestion have been given at the last of the project, from that the seeker can easily conclude the reasons of food wastage and can apply in any same environmental problem. Furthermore a well elaborative questionnaire has been made for knowing the reasons behind the .problem In short the research focuses on exploring specific food waste contexts and interactions more in-depth. Experiments and interventions in particular can contribute to a shift from analysis to solutions.

Abstract Waste has emerged as a major issue in the modern society. Due to urbanization, the volume of waste is speedily rising. If the origin of waste creation makes no effort, then all wastes are either disposed of or burnt which results in waste of land, air, water, and energy as well as the growth of undesirable animals, plants and microorganism. Through the associate and involvement of the local population, waste may be managed locally in a sustainable manner. Waste management may be an expensive endeavor if not carried out appropriately. In most of the developing nations, 20-50 percent of urban expenditure budget is directed at management of solid waste. Small hotels in Dehradun, the capital city of Uttrakhand, haven't made any attempts to address their waste-related environmental consequences, which has had a negative effect on the environment. In this paper, waste management practices of small hotels in capital city of Uttrakhand are investigated. Employees of small hotels were given a survey schedule to fill out in order to collect information about their waste management practices. The findings show that small hotels choose to dispose of their waste rather than recycle and reuse it.

The amount of solid waste is rapidly increasing due to urbanization. Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal is facing the bigger challenges day by day which are usually caused by rapid urbanization and modernization of the city. Cities around the world are playing an ever-increasing role in creating wealth, enhancing social development, attracting investment and harnessing both human and technical resources for achieving unprecedented gains in productivity and competitiveness. This study explored the solid waste management practices of a hotel in Kathmandu. I used ethnographic research design in doing this study. The discussion was done with hotel staffs, waste management company staffs and an expert of the solid waste management field. Hotel has been highly benefitted from the integrated solid waste management system. There is proper system and record of waste generated, recyclables recovered and the amount of waste transferred to the landfill site. KEYWORDS: Solid waste, hotel waste...

This study was carried on solid waste management in Sher-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology Kashmir. It is noted that the advantages in managing solid waste at institutional level such as university because of its unique characteristics also influences the waste management needs and strategies. This paper outlines findings from a yearlong study through surveys, field investigations, including on-site waste measurements and questionnaire on institutional solid waste management. It was discovered that the waste's content was primarily organic in content, suggesting a strong disposing potential in terms of organic manure or biogas production through scientific digestion and composting. The study revealed that maximum contribution to organic waste in the form of food waste was from messes of the hostels (53.32 T). That can be biodegradable managed and properly disposed, hence make a significant change in the waste management system. Hostels also generate 17.77...

Educational institutions are major contributors to municipal solid waste (MSW) such as vegetable wastes (cooked and uncooked), leftover food, packaging materials, papers, plastics, rags and other fabrics, dust, ash and a variety of combustible and noncombustible substances. Approximately, 500 kg/d of vegetable and food waste from the canteens and mess and 8,000 kg/month of paper and hardboards are generated in the educational institutions with a footfall of 12000 persons per day. The key problems faced by the institutions due to solid waste generation are (i) cost of disposing the waste appropriately, (ii) clogging of drains due to dispersal of the waste into the surrounding and (iii) vector breeding apart from the contamination of soil from these wastes. Therefore, appropriate collection and disposal of generated solid waste is crucial in MSW management. Nowadays, institutions focus on minimizing the amount of waste generates and maximizing the value-added products extracted from t...
