Studying Abroad - IELTS Essay

Many students now have the opportunity to study in other countries. Studying abroad may bring some benefits to some students, but it also has a significant number of disadvantages. Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own opinion. Studying abroad has become an extremely popular study option amongst university students. While studying abroad is extremely expensive, it exposes students to a wide range of people, cultures and experiences that will reward them later on in their careers. In my opinion, students are far better off studying abroad even though it might be a bit costly. One of the greatest advantages of studying in a foreign country is that it exposes students to essential life experiences that will develop them professionally, impossible if they have studied only in their own country. Being in another country forces people to pop and come out of their bubble of comfort, opening them to a plethora of opportunities, which can help them advance in their careers. For example, when I went to study in the UK as an eighteen-year-old, I had to push myself out of my comfort zone and become self-reliant, making me much more mentally and emotionally mature. These ultra-challenging experiences are what develops a person. A negative aspect of studying overseas is that it is extremely expensive. It is not just high university fees that drive up the expenses; it includes stationery and study material expenses, travelling costs, rent, money spent on food, and other miscellaneous expenses. For example, I had to take an education loan of 30000 pounds to fund my tuition fees. Moreover, during my stay in the UK, I had to take up a job as a part-time waiter to earn enough to pay my monthly rent and meet a part of my monthly expenses. An increasing number of students are opting to study overseas. Although studying abroad can make a hole in your pocket, it will test and challenge you mentally and emotionally, helping your overall personal and professional development. In my opinion, long-term professional and personal gains from overseas studies justify every penny spent on it.

In the following paragraphs, I will go through the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad.

The present-day economy is known to be competitive and demanding. Today, if an individual is not decorated with impressive degrees and accolades, they are bound to miss out on various profitable opportunities. Amidst such relentless competition, an individual will inevitably choose to be educated at a reputable academic institution. Since the quality of education is often not superlative in developing countries, people from such nations tend to move abroad for better alternatives. Also, the amount of time a student spends studying abroad and adapting to the foreign environment significantly increases their interpersonal skills and facilitates their overall development.

Body Paragraph 2:

On the contrary, there are numerous limitations to choosing a foreign university for higher education. First and foremost, we must acknowledge that studying and living abroad is an exceedingly costly affair. Most students have to give up on their ambition of studying abroad due to financial hindrances. Moreover, staying away from one’s family and native place is an onerous ordeal. There are also several cases of discrimination and social exclusion against non-native students, which makes it difficult for such individuals to adopt the lifestyle of the host country.

With changing times, more and more students wish to move out of their native country to a completely new place where they can study among a bunch of students who are new to them. And this has certainly given a rise to the number of students moving abroad to study among them. While the idea of going out seems fun, is it actually true in real scenarios?

There are many benefits of studying abroad but according to me, I believe the number of demerits of studying abroad is more than its advantages. Starting with knowing about its benefits, it feels great to study abroad. When one starts studying abroad, they become more independent as a person. This is because everything, right from all the household chores to outdoor things needs to be done on one’s own and this helps an individual to become a better version of himself/herself. They learn to be better and dependent on themselves. Living abroad allows an individual to learn different foreign languages in order to converse with their peers and fellow classmates. This further helps them to broaden their horizon, that by learning new languages and living for a period of 2-3 years in a foreign country, they tend to learn new cultures and how things are done differently in their country. They learn about their customs, traditions, and values.

But despite having so many advantages, the number of disadvantages succeed them. Though it is true that students get to learn new languages while living in a foreign country, with that comes the possibility of isolation and loneliness. There are many students who face difficulty while speaking in languages other than their native ones and while learning these languages, there are times when they are not able to converse fluently and swiftly as other students. And this leads to the different language barriers that arise among them. Thus, these children tend to spend most of their time alone without anyone’s company which can further lead to failure in examination and also depression.

Another demerit of studying abroad is that one has to do all of their work on their own which can be quite tiring at times and can lead to fatigue. This can also affect the students psychologically and they can suffer from various mental illnesses. Further, living abroad for a long time alone without being with anyone from your family or loved one can lead to homesickness and even lead to depression among many students. Along with this, studying abroad can be extremely expensive as compared to the cost one bears when he/she decided to study in their native country.

In conclusion, I believe it’s always better to study in one’s own country while being in the company of your loved ones and it should be encouraged more than moving out to study.

Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own opinion.

Before you start to write, study the question carefully and make a quick plan. The question asks you to do 2 things. First, it asks you to discuss both sides of the argument posed in the first paragraph.

Take a couple of minutes to think of 2 to 3 benefits of studying abroad and then 2 or 3 disadvantages. List them on your question paper. The examiner will not look at anything on the question paper.

Next, think about what your opinion is. Is it a good idea to study abroad or not? You can be on one side of the argument or the other or even somewhere in between. It’s unimportant as long as you have an opinion and state it clearly.

Now you can start to write your essay.

IELTS WRITING TASK 2 MODEL ANSWER – STUDYING ABROAD

This is a band 9 IELTS model answer. Note the paragraphing with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph.

WRITING TASK 2 IELTS MODEL WITH EXPLANATIONS

Introduction paragraph 1.

A n increasing number of students are deciding to study overseas and many find the option very attractive. Whilst this is not something that every student would choose, it is, in my opinion, an extremely attractive proposition for those who would benefit from the opportunity.

You must structure your essay into distinct and obvious paragraphs. The first paragraph should be the introduction which should usually be two sentences.

The first sentence is a paraphrase of the original question making sure that no phrases are copied. Overseas has been used as a synonym for abroad and other countries .

The continuous tense is used to show that what you are writing about is a situation that is happening now. A second option would have been to use the present perfect in “an increasing number of students who have decided to study…” which indicates that this started in the past, is still happening and is likely to continue. Either way, you need to demonstrate good use of more complex tenses.

To find something attractive is a common collocation. You will gain marks for using common collocations .

This second sentence of the introduction gives a clear position of the writer’s opinion. The question explicitly asks for your opinion. It’s a good idea to give your opinion in the introduction as this answers an important requirement of the Task 2 question.

The first part of the 2nd sentence gives a concession. You should always give concessions to show that you recognise that there are other opinions and options.

Note the use of the modal verb would rather than will .  Would indicates a strong conditional possibility. Will indicates a future certainty or prediction which is not the case here as the sentence is conditional on a student receiving the option to study abroad.

An attractive proposition is a common collocation meaning an enticing or winning activity. It’s something pleasant to do. Remember to use collocations.

BODY TEXT 1 – PARAGRAPH 2

Studying overseas has many advantages for students. Firstly, it will give students the experience of other markets, cultures and perspectives. This means that those students with overseas experience would become more attractive to prospective employers operating in this increasingly globalised world.

This type of question, where you are asked to discuss the advantages and disadvantages, lends itself to a structure using body text 1 for one side of the argument and body text 2 for the alternative.

State the overall argument and position of the paragraph.

Use firstly (or first or to begin with ) to introduce the first of your three arguments in support of your opinion.

You should give a result or an outcome for your opinion. This means introduces the result or outcome of your first argument.

Note the use of the noun perspectives instead of point of view or attitudes and the use of the adjective prospective instead of potential or probable . This is advanced level formal English vocabulary so try to learn some of these types of vocabulary in order to gain higher marks.

Prospective employers and overseas experience are common collocations. Use of collocations will gain you higher marks.

Note the spelling of globalised with an ‘s’ rather than a ‘z’. An ‘s’ is a usual spelling in British English, especially in London and surrounding regions. A ‘z’ is also used in other regions of the UK and some other regions of the English-speaking world and always in the USA. You can use either an ‘s’ or a ‘z’ but you must always use the same spelling for this and all other words that use this form of spelling such as ‘organise/organize’, ‘recognise/recognize’ etc. You’ll lose marks if you are not consistent.

Secondly, studying and living abroad will provide students with the opportunity of acquiring a second language at a social and professional level and, as a result, improving their contacts and employment prospects.

Secondly introduces your second argument and as a result introduces the outcome.

Note the use of acquiring a second language which is a common lexis at advanced level formal English for learning a second language . Try to remember this type of collocation / lexis to improve your mark. Social and professional level is also good formal lexis.

Employment prospects is a collocation. Use collocations.

Finally, the experience of studying and living in a foreign country would ensure that students become more independent, self-confident and self-reliant.

Finish off with your third argument using the signpost word finally .

Would ensure introduces your outcome here.

Notice the use of the conditional modal would rather than will . Remember that to an English speaker, the outcome, although very likely, is not 100% certain so the conditional would should be used rather than the future tense ( will ). Would describes a very high probability which is dependent on the student getting the experience of being abroad. Would is used rather than could as it shows that the outcome is more possible. Correct and natural use of modal verbs in your essay will gain you higher marks.

BODY TEST 2 – PARAGRAPH 3

On the other hand, studying abroad could have some disadvantages in some circumstances.

Introduce the disadvantages .

Start the new paragraph with on the other hand to ‘signpost’ to the examiner that this is the counter-argument and concession.

Note the use of the modal verb could to show a future possibility that is not certain.

If students had to study in a second language, it could limit their performance and their success in their chosen subject.

Use a 2 nd conditional at some stage in your essay to demonstrate your ability to use advanced grammar. This sentence is your first concession. You must always show the other side of the argument and the question explicitly asked you to discuss both sides of the argument.

A second language is a collocation.

Furthermore, for many students, studying abroad would have no material benefit, for example, studying English in a non-English speaking country or taking some technical subjects would appear to offer little benefit.

Furthermore is a good linking word to show that there is more information connected with your counter-argument.

Use of the modal verb would indicates a strong possibility but not an absolute certainty.

Always use at least one example to support your arguments, introduced and signposted by for example or for instance.

THE CONCLUSION – PARAGRAPH 4

In conclusion, I believe that any disadvantages are heavily outweighed by the significant benefits that can come from studying abroad for those who would choose it or find it beneficial.

Signpost your conclusion clearly by using in conclusion or something similar. Use at least 2 sentences.

The question asks for your opinion so signpost it with ‘I believe’ and give your opinion clearly.

Note the use of the modal verb can with the verb come . This is a common expression to show possibility. We could omit the modal can and just use ‘benefits that come’ but this is too certain so we insert can to show that it’s a possibility.

To be outweighed is a good expression to express that one argument has more benefit (weight) than another.

Heavily outweighed is a collocation.

Not only would the experience gained from living in other countries be desirable to future employers but also gaining proficiency in another language can only be a benefit to their lives in general.

A nice complex grammatical phrase to finish your essay and impress the examiner. Firstly this is an inversion introduced by the adverbial phrase not only…but also …

Secondly, note the use of the modal verb would and not will . The outcome is not 100% certain ( will ) but is highly probable ( would ).

Finally, note the use of can (only) be. Can is a very common modal verb which is used here to express ability; the ability of a second language to be a benefit. Only strengthens the expression by focusing on the cause – another language.

To gain experience, (the experience gained) is a collocation.

This is especially the case as it regards developing countries, including both ordinary and famous examples. The average student from a developing nation that studies abroad in the United States or Europe, will likely have the opportunity to pursue a career there. Once hired by a company, there is a clear pathway to residency and even citizenship in the future. Since these students must meet higher admission requirements, it logically follows that a significant percentage will never return and share their newly acquired expertise with their fellow citizens.

Nonetheless, the instances above are rare and there are tangible effects from knowledgeable graduates returning to their home. Such students are capable of contributing novel outlooks and perspectives in society generally the workplace more specifically. One illustrative example of this in Vietnam is Ngo Bao Chau who studied mathematics at Oxford. After his studies abroad, he was awarded the most prestigious mathematics award, the Fields Medal, in 2007. Ielts writing task 2: studying abroad.

More and more students are choosing to study at colleges and universities in a foreign country. Do the benefits of studying abroad outweigh the drawbacks?

Here are some ideas from my ebook :

Benefits of studying abroad:

• Many students travel abroad to study at a prestigious university.
• The best universities employ lecturers who are experts in their fields.
• Qualifications gained abroad can open doors to better job opportunities.
• Living in a foreign country can broaden students' horizons.

Drawbacks of studying abroad:

Hello Simon, Is it ok for you to check this essay pls?..tnx so much...I'm really aiming for a high grade..=) (Introduction) Nowadays,there are young people who are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and studying university studies in some countries. Other people think it is beneficial, but some perceive certain drawbacks. I think it is a good idea to be able to relax before and after years of studying and earn enough money for personal needs. However, I believe that there are certain disadvantages like the tendency of not going back anymore and being late in finishing school. ..Can i give my own experiences to prove my point in my introduction?.. ..tnx so much...=)

However, you can ask questions here. You asked a question about giving your experiences in the introduction - I think it's better if you leave your experiences for the main body paragraphs. In fact, although your introduction contains some nice ideas, in my opinion it is too long.

No, just keep it short and simple - I often write about 30 or 40 words. The main body paragraphs are much more important.

I have a question. Some words are always used together, such as "advantage & disadvantage", "benefit & drawback" and "strength & weakness". Can we exchange their counterparts, like "benefit & weakness"? And besides the words I mentioned, would u mind telling me some other examples?

No, we don't tend to mix them. Others are 'positives and negatives', 'for and against', 'pros and cons' etc.

Studying Abroad Essay IELTS: Benefits, Latest Tips & Sample Answers

IELTS Writing consists of two tasks- Task 1 and 2. The latter requires candidates to write an essay responding to a given statement. For writing task 2, candidates must write an essay of a minimum of 250 words and within 40 minutes. However, writing lower than the stipulated word count will hamper one’s band score.

Furthermore, the examiner evaluates the essay on different parameters, including coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy and task achievement. The assessment criteria are almost the same for Academic and General Training.Besides, the topics are of various types, the most common being studying abroad essay IELTS. That is why we have compiled a detailed guide on approaching Writing Task 2, sample questions and answers, vocabulary, tips and much more. 

How to Approach Writing Task 2? 

Many candidates find writing task 2 the most challenging, often due to the time constraint and the kind of approach towards this task. However, they can follow the below-mentioned pattern to achieve a higher band score.  It is always best to break the essay into the four-step approach: 

• Analyse the question 

First and foremost, students must analyse the question and whether it falls in any of the categories: 

• Double Question 
• Opinion- Agree or Disagree 
• Problem Solution 
• Advantages and Disadvantages 
• Discussion 
• Decide the position 

Candidates must decide the perspective they would be presenting in the essay. For example, if it is an opinion essay, students must state whether they agree or disagree with the statement. 

• Brainstorm 

It is important to brainstorm ideas during the essay. Candidates can ask themselves questions like: 

• What is the reason behind this development? 
• What is unifying cultures? 
• What is more important in people’s lives today? 

If one cannot link their ideas logically and sequentially, one may end up losing marks in coherence and cohesion. 

• Linking ideas 

After the process mentioned above is complete, students should develop their ideas in-depth. They can do this by explaining and elaborating each of their ideas and supporting them with examples.

Study  = learn about a subject through books / a course:  I’m studying law; I’m studying for my exams.  We don’t use any other prepositions after  study .  NOT   I am studying about law.

Learn  = get new knowledge or skills:  I’m learning English; I’m learning to knit.  Note that we say you are  taking a course ,  NOT   learning a course.

NB  Prepositions after  learn: learn about, learn from, learn to: I learned a lot from this course.   NOT   I learned a lot with this course.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Increasing numbers of students are choosing to study abroad.

To what extent does this trend benefit the students themselves and the countries involved?

What are the drawbacks?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Studying abroad has become increasingly common in the last few years, especially for young people from countries such as China and India. Many students and their families clearly consider the experience worth the sacrifices involved. The former often give up friendships when they move abroad; the latter often use their life savings. Moreover, many governments are willing to invest huge sums of money in sponsoring their young people to study in universities overseas.

However, this trend has drawbacks as well as benefits for those concerned. One potential drawback is that the instruction international students receive may not be relevant to their home contexts. For example, students from developing countries who go to Western countries for teacher training are often taught to use teaching techniques that are suitable for small classes. When they return home they are often expected to teach classes of 40 or 50 students. Hence, what they have been trained to do may not be relevant.

Another potential drawback is the phenomenon of ‘brain drain’. Prior to leaving home, they may be fully committed to returning. Nevertheless, students are often at the stage in their lives when they are forming their most important personal and professional relationships. Thus they may choose to remain in the host country on completing their studies.

However, most international students find ways of making the experience work well for themselves and others involved. Most return home, enriched by new friendships made abroad. Furthermore, most find ways of adapting what they have learned to their home context. On balance, the drawbacks do not outweigh the benefits.

• Valid passport – your passport must be valid for six months after degree completion.
• Statement of Purpose – this is a letter of motivation that lays down your goals and ambitions in 400 words. This is your opportunity to shine so you must give it all the effort you can.
• A letter of recommendation – most colleges require one letter of recommendation from your teacher or supervisor. Some will require two. The letter will give the provider of the scholarship more information about your motivation and intellectual abilities. When requesting letters of recommendation make sure to give the person plenty of time to complete them.
• Proof of acceptance into a university or college. You will not receive a scholarship without this.
• Official financial statements – you may be required to supply your parents’ income tax returns as proof of need.

Today, more and more students are choosing to attend higher education programs abroad. From my perspective, the benefits of this trend outweigh its negatives, living in another country provides a wider perspective of the world which leads to improved confidence.

On the one hand, studying overseas brings drawbacks such as culture shock and its reverse effect. First and foremost, because of the host country's diverse norms and practices, culture shock can make it difficult for newcomers to adapt to the unfamiliar way of life. Unless students have already mastered the host country's language proficiency, they might not be able to comprehend or communicate with locals and could experience difficulty speaking with other students. Furthermore, reverse culture shock also exists. Returning home after adjusting to their study abroad place might still be difficult. As students and their home countries both change when living overseas, this makes it challenging for them to readjust to their new surroundings when they return home.

Overseas education, on the other hand, is an excellent way to boost one's self-esteem and perspective on the world. To begin with, acquiring a global perspective is a vital aspect of the educational journey. Individuals who study abroad have the opportunity to learn about other cultures and subjects in completely different settings. Students will also be able to experience everything that the new culture has to offer, giving them a deeper understanding of what it is like to live there. Secondly, studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to live life outside of one's comfort zone. The confidence gained will be invaluable in dealing with any challenging situations that may be encountered in the future.

In conclusion, the benefits of this phenomenon, in my opinion, outweigh the drawbacks because living in another country provides a larger perspective of the world, which leads to improved confidence.
