You have finally completed your thesis . It has been a long process of getting your bachelor’s thesis or other college paper to completion. Before you can submit it, high-quality printing and binding is essential. Any student has two concerns when it comes to printing and binding their thesis:
Here is a detailed guideline on salient issues to keep in mind when going about printing and binding your thesis .
Most students have never printed and bound any research paper before their thesis paper. Therefore, it may be a difficult task selecting the ideal printing and binding configurations. This article provides all the information you need for printing and binding a thesis.
Some of the questions that are in the minds of students when it comes to printing their papers include:
We have compiled some guidelines on printing a thesis to make it easier for you.
: You have two option when it comes to printing your thesis; either go with black/white or coloured printing. Between the two, colour is the most expensive. | If you print your thesis in colour, it will look precious. However, be warned, using too much colour in your paper will make it look a less serious paper. |
the 80g/m is the most probable paper quality that most copy shops use. However, it is quite thin and therefore, not sturdy. You may also find printing on the reverse side shining through. | It is important that everything is right about your paper. Even the paper quality will count in your final mark. Consider going for 100g/m as it improves the look of your thesis. Some providers use this quality as the default quality |
Your total price is determined by such factors as use of colour, the weight of paper and the length of the paper | Compare offers from different providers. For example, if you go for colour-printing, pick a provider that will not ask for a surcharge. |
Most students just think about the ‘how’ to go about binding as they do not know the best type of binding to pick for the thesis. Your choice depends on the type of thesis. A paper that requires extensive research and work, such as research paper may require better binding than your regular term paper that takes just a fraction of the time.
The weight of these papers also differs. Your term paper counts just a small percentage of your final mark where your thesis, whether masters, bachelors or a research paper takes the higher percentage.
Keep in mind: printing and binding your thesis is a very important thing. You should find a appropriate binding to make your dissertation worthy and unique. Here, a simple spiral binder may not be the best choice. It is best to go for leather book binding as it is sturdy and looks worthy of a major paper.
Essentially, the choice of the binding to use depends on the type of college paper that you would like to submit.
Most tertiary institutions have specific requirements when it comes to the type of binding to pick. Therefore, check with your institution, whether there any regulations on printing and binding your paper.
There are several options out there for your binding. We shall explain each to make it easier for you to make a choice.
Our recommendation for important papers: thesis printing and binding with the high-quality leather book binding . The leather-look gives your thesis a solid look, which is classy and professional-looking. When you decide to use BachelorPrint, you are given a wide choice of customized options that include a bookmark, custom embossing and corner protectors to have a superb look for your thesis.
Recommendations:
Leather book binding works great for your final papers such as
Thermal binding is the most versatile type of binding. Its cover is transparent, thereby allowing you to show the title of your thesis right on the cover. Besides, it comes with a leather-like back cover and you get to choose the colour of the cover. A very good way for printing and binding your thesis.
Recommendation :
Thermal binding works great for smaller research papers. It is also ideal for situations where you need various print-outs of the paper.
If you would like to have a final paper that looks creative and stands out, consider going for the softcover. This is because it allows you to design the cover in the way you want. There is a wide choice of pictures, fonts and logos available when you need to go wild with your designs, especially if you are quite creative. However, ensure that your paper does not get too cluttered with creative pieces. You are interested in printing and binding your thesis, not a comic – it has to look serious and professional.
Recommendation:
Spiral binding is the simplest binding method and the sleekest. It has similarity to the thermal binding in that you have a transparent front cover and a leather-like back cover with several colour choices. However, unlike other binding types where your pages are glued together, in this case, your papers are held together by spirals. You have a choice of metal or plastic spirals if you decide for printing and binding your thesis with the spiral binding.
Spiral biding works well for small research papers like the term papers. It is not recommended for important, large final papers such as research papers and dissertations.
We have tabulated the information above about various types of binding to help you determine which would be the best way for printing and binding your thesis.
Leather book binding is not only classy but also professional. It is recommended for use in all major final college papers such as essays, Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis. We do not advise using it for smaller papers.
Thermal binding is the most versatile type of binding. Its cover is transparent, thereby allowing you to show the title of your thesis right on the cover. Besides, it comes with a leather-like back cover and you get to choose the colour of the cover.
The soft cover is the best for creative study programs. This is because it allows you to design the cover in any way. However, there is a limit to the number of pages that you can bind with the cover. Therefore, it is not ideal for all types of final papers. We do not recommend that you use it for your dissertation.
Spiral binding is ideal for binding smaller projects. You can use it for various papers such as term papers and research projects. However, for papers with several pages, spiral binding may not be the ideal option to pick. |

There are two options available with this leather book: Premium leather book and standard leather book. Whereas the premium leather book has a matte finish, a standard leather book has a glossy finish. However, both are done in leather-look and consist of a solid and sturdy cover.
Which leather book you choose for your thesis binding is a matter of personal preference.

Of all the different types of binding, thermal binding is a classic. One of the features is the transparent front cover: it shows off the title page of your dissertation as well as the title of your thesis. This means that attention is immediately drawn to the topic of your dissertation.
Looking to make an impact with your thesis? In that case, the softcover is just for you! You have free reign and can decide what you want your cover to look like: Logos, colors, photos, or different fonts – you’re the one who decides what goes on the cover of your softcover. That is why this type is ideal for more creative fields of study.
Note: Designing a one-of-a-kind binding that looks super original is tempting, but remember to keep it aligned with your field of studies and professional looking.
Of all the different types of binding, spiral binding is the sleekest and simplest type BachelorPrint has to offer. It has a transparent front cover. This allows the examiner to see the topic of your Master’s thesis or dissertation right away. However, spiral binding is better for printing shorter dissertations.

It’s one thing to know what thesis binding to choose when printing your thesis. But there are lots of helpful and important tips that you should consider when it comes to printing. We sat down with BachelorPrint to put together some exclusive advice just for you:
Tip #1- Choosing the right paper: Most printing services use 80 g/m² paper by default. However, 80 g/m² paper is relatively thin and as a result, the print on the reverse side will shine through if you are printing double-sided.
Tip: Remember that printing and binding your thesis is not something you do every day – be sure to use high-quality paper and select 100 g/m² paper – if printing double-sided, we actually recommend 120 g/m² paper. BachelorPrint automatically uses 100 g/m² paper.
Tip #2- Printing single-sided or double-sided: It’s totally up to you whether you print your thesis single-sided or double-sided. Make sure you check the examiner’s guidelines first – if there are none, the choice is yours!
Tip: When printing double-sided, make sure your page numbers are formatted correctly. Uneven page numbers should always be on the right-hand page, and even page numbers should be on the left-hand page.
Tip #3- Printing in color: It’s up to you whether you print in color or black and white. This depends on your thesis. If your dissertation has lots of charts and photos, color printing would look better.
Tip: Color printing gives your thesis a classier appearance. But take note! Too much color and your thesis will look less professional.
Tip #4- Number of copies: You can assume that two members of the examination board will read your thesis. Furthermore, the person or organization you did your internship with might also like a copy of your thesis. Last but not least, you would probably also like to own a copy of your dissertation, Master’s thesis, or research paper .
Tip: Find out beforehand, how many copies you’ll need. We generally recommend making 4 to 5 copies. Of course, the type of binding is up to you.
Tip #5- Cost: The cost of printing and binding your thesis is based on various factors: Paperweight, color printing, and actual printing. Many service providers often add a surcharge when you opt for color printing or thicker paper.
Tip: BachelorPrint printing expert automatically uses 100 g/m² paper, and does not even add a surcharge. The same applies for color printing: whether you choose black/white or color, BachelorPrint charges the same.

After three or four years working on your PhD, you want it printed beautifully by a specialist academic printing service.
MuPrint will print and bind your thesis to university requirements, quickly and without any fuss. We have over 30 years’ experience getting it right.
You can now place your order online for hardback or softback (Channel) binding. Or read on for more information…
We can print your thesis for you while you wait, in colour or black. You can use the Price Calculator to check the price. Or if you can give us 3 or 5 working days to complete and the price will be lower.
Our colour printers are sophisticated enough to know the difference between colour and black pages so you can send it to print as one complete document – no need to waste time collating it afterwards. However, watch out for:
We recommend printing from PDF files as these minimise problems but we do have Microsoft Word 2010 and LibreOffice (OpenOffice) on all four customer PCs.
We usually print onto high quality standard weight (80gsm) paper and you can choose recycled paper at no extra cost. We also have a selection of papers up to 120gsm which are suitable for dissertation printing, with a small extra cost per sheet.
If you wish to print your thesis yourself, that’s fine – we’re still happy to bind it for you.
For softback binding, page 60 of the MMU Research Degrees Handbook allows channel binding for submitting two paper copies of your Thesis. We can normally bind while you wait in about 5 minutes at a cost of £5.00 per copy, plus any printing charges if required. However, if your Thesis is thicker than 32mm – approx. 300 sheets of standard 80gsm paper – it’s too thick for channel binding. You could consider printing it double sided in such a situation.
There is no longer a requirement to submit the final Thesis in hardback format. If you require hardback binding – as a personal copy for example, or for your supervisor or sponsor – please note that this will take a little longer: it cannot be done while you wait although a same day service is possible. Full details on the options available can be found on our hardback binding page.
The standard regulations state that prior to your viva, you must submit two bound copies of your Thesis. Most students choose softback binding for their first submission as it is quick and inexpensive. MuPrint can channel bind your Thesis to University of Manchester standards with gold lettering on the spine. This takes only 5-10 minutes (not hours or days) and costs £9.00 per copy.
The standard lettering required is in this style:
PhD YOUR NAME 2020
Note that with the modern style, there are no stops in “PhD” nor after any initials in your name.
There is a physical limit of 32mm – approximately 300 sheets of standard 80gsm paper or about 340 sheets of 70gsm paper – that can be channel bound. If your Thesis has more pages or you have used a thicker paper then you will have to bind it into 2 separate volumes or print it double sided. Check the regulations for what you need if you bind it in more than a single volume. If you haven’t already printed it, we can print it double sided for you but check with your supervisor beforehand as many prefer single sided printing only.
There is no longer a requirement to submit hardback bound copies of your Thesis once you have passed your viva at the University of Manchester. If you require hardback binding – as a personal copy for example, or for your supervisor or sponsor – please note that this will take a little longer: it cannot be done while you wait although a same day service is possible. Full details on the options available can be found on our hardback binding page.
If you wish to re-use all or some of the pages from your Channel bound Thesis, bring it back to us as we have the equipment to take the binding apart.
We’re happy to print and bind theses for students from other universities. Please ensure that you bring a copy of the regulations so we can complete the work to the correct standard.
When submitting your thesis or dissertation, MuPrint are university printers you can trust.

BachelorPrint as an online printing service offers you several advantages for your dissertation print on demand :
The most important factor for most students when it comes to dissertation printing is the price. The price includes factors such as the type of binding and the number of pages when printing and binding your dissertation. You can calculate the exact price for your dissertation printing beforehand in our print shop .
Would you like to print your dissertation, for instance, with 20 pages, and then bind it with the premium leather binding with additional embossed details? The estimated cost is $64.80. This is 45% less compared to other market prices! Plus: with BachelorPrint, your order is delivered for free!
At BachelorPrint, we use 100 g/m² premium paper as standard for printing and set the same price for color and black/white printing.
To have your dissertation printed and bound, you can either go to a copy shop or simply order your dissertation binding online. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
One advantage of the print shop is that you can conveniently place your order from home. You configure your binding and then look at the end product using our 3D live preview. Then simply order and get your order delivered the next day for free.
For works, such as dissertations, either 80 g/m² paper or 100 g/m² paper is used. At BachelorPrint we use 100 g/m² paper as our standard, as it is not only more robust but also feels better when you browse through the dissertation. However, if you want to print and bind your dissertation on both sides, we recommend that you use 120 g/m² paper to ensure that the text does not show through.
If you want to know more about the right paper for your dissertation, follow this link to our blog post: Which paper for dissertation printing & binding?
We recommend high-quality binding for important works, such as a dissertation. For this reason, the leather binding is our top recommendation! It looks noble and high-grade and gives your examiner a perfect first impression.
If you decide on dissertation binding with BachelorPrint, we recommend that you keep an eye on the countdown above and make use of the delivery time calculator as soon as possible. The next-day express delivery is free of charge at BachelorPrint.

What is the minimum number of pages you can bind in a book?
The thinnest book we have bound is 6 pages, although we are confident that 1 page is the minimum.
What is stamping or lettering?
Stamping is the term we use to describe the process of affixing the words to your thesis cover. While it may appear like it has been printed, the process involved heating up brass or lead letters, then pressing them into the surface of the cover with a thin sheet of fast-release foil in between. If you run your fingers along the letters, you may feel how letters have been pressed into the cover. The term lettering has been coined to assist students to understand that we are talking about the words or ‘letters’ in their title, name, degree title, etc.
I have a very long title. Can you fit it on the front and spine of my thesis?
We have a number of different sizes of our thesis font, known as Radiant Medium. This allows us to select a slightly smaller font size when there are many words in a thesis title. In 99% of orders, we have no problem fitting long titles onto the spine of a thesis.
I have a special or unusual character in my title or my name. Are you able to accommodate this?
Yes, we utilise state-of-the-art programming to control our foil stamping (lettering) machine. This means we can produce almost any special character for your title or name. There is an additional fee for each special character, per font size (two font sizes are used – one for the front cover and one for the spine).
Do you have other fonts available for the front cover and spine lettering?
We have a large range of fonts, which incur an additional fee.
Can you print on my cover instead of stamping?
Yes we can! We are able to full-colour print on buckram and many of the other book cloths we stock.
Can you stamp an image or logo on the cover of my thesis?
We certainly can! Over the years, a number of students have requested their university/college crest or logo to be stamped on the cover, you are more than able to have such stamping on your personal copies.
Can you print an image in colour on the cover of my thesis?

If you have recently completed your dissertation congratulations are in order! But the work is not finished – you now have to get your dissertation in front of examiners in a professional format. There are a number of factors to consider when producing a physical copy of your thesis :
Thesis binding involves fastening the physical pages of your dissertation together to produce a single presentable document. As simple as it sounds, there is a lot to get right, and dissertation binding is important in giving a good impression of your work.
Spiral/helical/wired binding.
Spiral binding (also known as helical binding) and wired binding are very common for bachelors and masters dissertations. These options give a professional look and allow pages to be rotated 360 degrees, making for easy reading. Spiral binding uses a plastic coil, whilst wire binding uses a metal wire.
Fastback binding (also referred to as softback binding) uses glue to keep your dissertation pages together. This is not a very common choice for dissertation binding as it is rather formal for bachelors and masters, and perhaps not formal enough for PhD theses. Fastback binding also comes with a risk of glue losing fixity over time leading to pages falling out.
Thermal binding is not very common but can be used for bachelors or masters dissertations. This type of binding is permanent (so pages cannot be easily added/removed) but is generally inexpensive. Another disadvantage of thermal bindings is that pages cannot be opened 360 degrees (as with fastback binding).
Comb binding involves punching holes down the side of the page and binding with a plastic comb strip. This binding option is also suitable for bachelors and masters dissertations. It is a cheap option but can sometimes become difficult to navigate as pages become stuck on the plastic combing. One advantage of plastic comb binding is that it is easy to add and remove pages.
Paperback binding will give your manuscript the appearance of a book and comes with personalisation options i.e. a titled cover page, spine and back. This gives a very professional appearance, too formal for a bachelors or masters dissertation, but ideal for a PhD thesis.
Hardback binding again gives a book like appearance, but is expensive and typically reserved only for PhD theses. In addition to custom titling, spine and back, there is a range of material and colour options for hardback binding e.g. the gold lettering you may have seen on academic books.
Most universities will provide very clear instruction on paper sizes, most often A4. However, some pages such as technical drawings or maps may be best shown on A3. In these cases ‘fold out’ pages are an option but must be approved by your university guidelines.
Check your university guidelines when deciding whether to print single or double sided. If printing double sided, be careful as some pages should not be printed back to back. For example, new chapters should start on the right hand page (of a double spread) so blank pages may be required.
Paper thickness is measured in grams per square metre (gsm). Although there is no ideal paper thickness, too thin and you risk your dissertation feeling low quality. Too high and you risk your dissertation pages feeling like cardboard, and again pointing to low quality.
Ryman is an affordable thesis binding service, with a range of options for dissertations and theses. Ryman often have stored on University campuses or nearby, so you can check the services provided by your local store (as an alternative to ordering online).
Doxdirect is an online service which offers a large amount of customisation when choosing a thesis binding option. The door to door service also offers a wide range of delivery and production options so you get your bound thesis in your hand as quick as possible.
Thesis Online has been around for a long time (established in 1920), and have a very good reputation. They offer an online thesis binding service and have a hand online calculator which allows you to modify your binding, printing, and deliver options and see the impact on cost in real-time.
Whichever service you use to bind your thesis or dissertation, there are a few important things to remember:
When using an online service check the turnaround time. Most services take around a week to print, bind, and deliver, though faster services are available at a cost. Some universities have an onsite printing service that students can use. These services likely offer binding options which satisfy your department’s dissertation submission requirements.
An electronic copy and physical copy of your dissertation will be read differently. Whilst consecutive pages are easy to compare on a computer screen, a physical copy may have pages printed on opposite sides of a single page (if double page printed) which makes side by side comparisons difficult. This is something to consider if your text frequently refers to images or tables overleaf.
Most thesis printing services only accept PDF file formats. Ensure that when you convert your dissertation to PDF that you review the document to ensure no errors occur during conversion.
Check your university dissertation guidance on margin requirements. It is also important to factor in margins when considering binding options. Typically a minimum margin of 2.5cm is required on the side of the page to be bound.
Although it comes with an additional cost, it may be useful to purchase personal copies of your bound thesis. You can then bring your bound copy to your Viva , and ensure that what you and your examiners are looking at are identical.

About the university, research at cambridge.
Please note the information on this page is for doctoral students. MSc and MLitt students are not required to submit a hardbound copy of their thesis or upload an electronic copy to Apollo
Please note also, this information is for submission of the final version of the thesis. Information about submitting your thesis for examination .
Final approval for doctoral degrees is conditional on you submitting a hardbound copy of your thesis for deposit in the University Library and uploading an electronic copy to Symplectic Elements for deposit in the University repository Apollo. These should be the versions approved by your examiners and Degree Committee and should be identical with the exception of the 'Deposit & Copying of Hardbound Thesis Declaration' form which should not be included in the electronic version. The ‘Statement of Length and Declaration Form’ which you submitted with the thesis for examination should not be included in either the hardbound or the electronic copy of the thesis. If you received permission to submit additional materials alongside your thesis, they must be uploaded with the electronic copy of your thesis for deposit in the University repository. It is not possible to make any amendments to the hardbound or electronic thesis after they have been submitted. If you receive permission to redact material from the electronic copy of your thesis, your hardbound thesis must still be the unredacted version - the Library will manage access to the thesis to ensure information redacted from the electronic copy is protected.
We recommend that you submit the electronic copy of your thesis first, so any errors that are picked up can be rectified prior to getting the hardbound printed and bound.
Submission of the hardbound thesis, creation of a thesis record in Symplectic Elements and the uploading of a thesis access confirmation form to it are requirements for all access levels. A file representing the full thesis must also be uploaded for all access levels except Indefinitely restricted access (see below for further guidance).
If you plan to graduate as soon as possible, please note that both hardbound and electronic copies of your thesis should be submitted at least ten calendar days before the graduation ceremony you wish to attend.
It is important to ensure your mailing address, email address(es) and telephone numbers are updated over the 12 months following the submission of your thesis. We will primarily contact you by email. You can update your details via CamSIS Self Service
What are the requirements for the hardbound submission.
It is important that you read this information very carefully - your hardbound and electronic theses may not be accepted if they do not meet the requirements.
The minimum requirements for the hardbound thesis are as follows:
be typescript on A4 paper; recommended 100gsm - check with the binders if you want to use a different weight, but should not be lower than 100gsm
be in A4 portrait format
use one-and-a-half spaced type
we recommend you use double-sided printing where possible; however, single-sided printing is acceptable
your hardbound thesis should be the version approved by your examiners and Degree Committee. If you receive permission to redact material from the electronic copy of your thesis, your hardbound thesis must still be the unredacted version - the Library will manage access to the thesis to ensure information redacted from the electronic copy is protected.

It is not substantially the same as any work that has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted, for any degree, diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution except as declared in the preface and specified in the text. There are a number of bookbinders available, including:
Cambridge SU Print Shop offer self-service printing.
Student Registry Student Services Centre New Museums Site Cambridge CB2 3PT

One copy is required for the University Library. However, the following Departments require a second copy, usually for their own library. Submit both copies to the Student Registry:
NB: MD under Special Regulations candidates should contact the Thesis Team ( [email protected] ) for advice on uploading the electronic copy of their thesis once the Student Registry has informed them that they are eligible to do so.
In addition to submission of a hardbound thesis (please see above), you are required to upload an electronic version of your thesis to Symplectic Elements for deposit in the University repository, Apollo. Information can be found on the Open Access webpages. However, please see below if you choose indefinitely restricted access for your thesis.
Details of a training session can be found here .
A module on deposting your electronic thesis can be found here.
Complete the thesis access form which can be found on the Open Access webpage (see below for information about managing access).
The electronic submission must be identical to the hardbound copy with the exception of the ' Deposit & Copying of Hardbound Thesis Declaration' form - do not include this form in the electronic version. If you receive permission to redact material from the electronic copy of your thesis, your hardbound thesis must still be the unredacted version - the Library will manage access to the thesis to ensure information redacted from the electronic copy is protected.
Upload your thesis and thesis access form to Symplectic Elements for deposit in the University repository, Apollo. If you were granted permission to submit additional materials alongside your thesis for examination, these must also be uploaded alongside the electronic version of your thesis. If you are unsure how to do this, please contact the Office of Scholarly Communication for further advice at [email protected] .
Please note that it is not possible to make any amendments to the thesis once it has been submitted.
Before you upload the electronic copy of your thesis to the University’s repository, you will need to confirm the appropriate level of access to your thesis. University Library staff will apply the access level to the hardbound and electronic version of your thesis. If your Degree Committee requires a second copy of the thesis to be retained in the department library, you need to ensure that the librarian knows which access level to apply.
Guidance on the different access levels is available on the Open Access webpage.
If you choose Time-limited restricted access | Submit your completed access confirmation form, countersigned by your supervisor, to the Degree Committee. Include the number of years that you are requesting in the Comments box. If you require more than ten, it is suggested that you consider Indefinitely restricted access instead. This access level should only be used if your thesis contains sensitive material or a patent application is involved. It cannot be used to protect research for publication purposes. The Degree Committee will either sign your form to confirm your request for Time-limited restricted access and return it to you to upload with your thesis file(s) or recommend a different access level. |
If you choose Indefinitely restricted access | Submit your completed access confirmation form, countersigned by your supervisor, to the Degree Committee. This access level should only be used if your thesis contains sensitive material which can never be released. It cannot be used to protect research for publication purposes. The Degree Committee will either sign your form to confirm your request for Indefinitely restricted access and return it to you to upload to your thesis record or recommend a different access level. A record must be created, and the form attached, even though a thesis file is not required. |
If you and your supervisor are unable to agree on the appropriate level of access | You should refer the matter to the Degree Committee, who will determine the appropriate access level and send you a completed form to upload. |
If you submitted the final version of your thesis before 1 st October 2017 and wish to extend a period of restricted access that was previously agreed, you can apply for this using the Restricted Access Extension form . You can apply to extend the period of restricted access to your thesis by a maximum of two years with each application.
Your Supervisor and Degree Committee will need to sign the form to confirm their approval of the extension of the period of restricted access. Once the form is complete and signed by all parties, it should be submitted to the Student Registry by email to [email protected] for final approval.
