Mission & Aims of the Program

Fielding’s APA accredited Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program is strongly aligned with the university’s mission to create a more humane, just, and sustainable world, and the university’s values that include academic excellence, community, diversity, and social justice.

Consistent with these values, a core mission of our program is to foster the inclusion of students from under-represented populations. These populations include students living in small communities, rural, or remote locations of the United States, students currently in the military or spouses of military members, adult learners with families, and students whose ongoing participation in their current communities cannot be halted for doctoral study elsewhere. These are student populations who are often unable to enter the field through preparation at a traditional university campus, yet these are the future psychologists for which the discipline and profession have expressed an urgent need.

In addition, our program aims to graduate entry-level scholar-practitioner psychologists who bring social justice values to their work as licensed health service professionals. Consistent with this overarching aim, we have four specific aims for our students, which must be achieved by the time of graduation.

  • Students will demonstrate doctoral-level discipline-specific knowledge that represents the scientific and theoretical knowledge areas of the discipline of psychology (i.e., history and systems of psychology and the affective, biological, cognitive, developmental, and social bases of behavior).
  • Students will demonstrate doctoral-level conceptualization, evaluation, analysis, and integration of discipline-specific knowledge across the curriculum.
  • Students will demonstrate doctoral-level ability to understand and critique research; design, conduct, analyze, and communicate theoretically informed research; and conduct research in a manner that is culturally sensitive and consistent with legal code and ethical standards, including the APA ethics code.
  • Students will demonstrate doctoral-level competence in the profession-wide competencies, including conducting an evidence-based diagnosis, assessment, and psychotherapy; and applying theory and research to develop case conceptualizations, treatment plans, and interventions that are consistent with legal and ethical standards and individual and cultural diversity factors.

Serving adults, many of whom have trained or worked in the mental health field, our unique distributed learning model blends the best of face-to-face learning opportunities with digital formats.

Faculty are active scholars and practitioners with a wide variety of expertise, which allows us to offer specialized concentrations and training in a variety of therapeutic orientations.

Geographic Eligibility

The program only considers applicants who reside in the contiguous United States and Canada. The program is not available to those residing internationally (except Canada). Applicants from Alaska and Hawaii may be considered pending confirmation of their ability and resources to attend local professional development seminars in contiguous U.S. on a regular basis, access to acceptable practicum training sites, and ability to relocate for internship. (Contact [email protected] to be put in touch with the Program Director for consideration prior to applying.)

Due to state licensing requirements, graduates of the program are not eligible for licensure in Oklahoma. For licensure information on your particular state of interest, please visit our Professional Licensure page [CLICK HERE].

California Psychology Doctorate Programs

Individuals who feel driven to help other people cope with and overcome emotional and mental health issues will likely find fulfillment in a career that lets them do just that. And there’s no doubt there’s a great need in society for compassionate, highly trained professionals who can address mental health problems, anxiety, addiction and the day-to-day stresses of life. This is a major reason why the Doctor of Psychology degree, or Psy.D. for short, was developed in the late 1960s, and today this degree is among the most rapidly growing graduate degrees.

The good news for students in California is that there are several excellent programs in the state that offer a range of Psy.D. degrees and focuses.

Let’s take a look at what prospective Psy.D. students in California should know about their educational options and what goes into becoming a professional psychologist.

How to Become a Practicing Clinical Psychologist in California

Being able to work as a professional psychologist in California is a several-step process that for many people begins with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. But that’s certainly not the only way to go about it. Let’s explore what steps are needed to become a psychologist in California.

  • Get your bachelor’s degree in an applicable field, most often psychology. Depending on the program you select for your Psy.D., you may not need to earn a master’s degree first, but if you are coming in with only a bachelor’s degree, schools will need to see that you have a basic education in psychology. So if not a major in that field, then your bachelor’s transcript should show a focus in psychology or a related field like biology. And some Psy.D. programs do require students to have a master’s degree, so be sure to find out what’s expected before you apply.
  • Earn a doctoral degree. While we’ve focused on Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) programs in California, many schools in the state offer a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the field as well, and this type of degree also could serve as the necessary doctoral component to earning licensure. But it’s important to note that most Ph.D. programs, even those in clinical psychology, won’t have the same internship or practicum requirements that are part of Psy.D. education, so those who earn a Ph.D. in psychology may need to complete additional internships to gain those real-world hours.
  • Meet state requirements. The California Board of Psychology processes and grants licensure applicants for psychologists. Prospective candidates must pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, as well as the California Psychology Law and Ethics Examination, in addition to verifying your completion of postdoctoral experience that’s part of most Psy.D. programs. Additionally, the state requires that applicants submit to a background and criminal history check, including a fingerprint scan.
  • Remain licensed, and keep up with requirements. Once a psychologist in California has earned their license, they must be sure it remains valid so they can continue practicing, and this means getting your license renewed every two years.

California Clinical Psychologist Salary and Job Outlook

Clinical, counseling and school psychologists in the state of California have the second-highest average annual salary among all their counterparts across the nation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics . Their average annual salary is $111,750, and on the very highest end of the scale, they can expect to earn more than $195,000 per year.

SEE ALSO: Psychologist Salary in California

Over the next decade, it’s expected that all psychologist jobs & careers across the U.S. economy will see a steady growth rate of about 5%, but for clinical psychologists in California, that rate is expected to be much higher — 12.5%.

PSY8220

In this course, learners examine theory and research associated with major psychological disorders, from the most common diagnostic concerns to dual diagnoses, comorbidity, and psycho-medical issues. Learners examine the concepts of psychopathology throughout the lifespan, then transition from studying DSM-5 concepts and terminology to evaluating clinical assessment and treatment situations. In particular, learners familiarize themselves with ways to apply theoretical concepts in a professional clinical setting while displaying sensitivity to ethical and diversity issues. Other course topics include the issues of “empirically validated” versus “evidence based” practice, the interaction of social and biological factors in etiology and treatment, and the interaction between complex Axis I and II disorders.

PSY-R8203 *

In this residency, learners practice assessment administration for cognitive, achievement, and adaptive behavior through coursework and a face-to-face residency. During the face-to-face residency, learners assess client behavior through the administration, scoring, and interpretation of standardized tests, including current versions of intelligence, achievement, adaptive behavior, and executive functioning assessments.

5 quarter credits
PSY-R8206 *

In this residency, learners develop diagnostic interviewing skills as well as personality and mental health assessment skills through coursework and a face-to-face residency. During the face-to-face residency, learners apply diagnostic interviewing strategy in personality and clinical assessment to assess client behavior through the administration, scoring, and interpretation of standardized tests, including current versions of personality assessments.

5 quarter credits
PSY-R8212 *

In this residency, learners strengthen their understanding of the application of theory and use of advanced skills and techniques through coursework and a face-to-face residency. During the face-to-face residency, learners participate in case discussions, roleplay, and group exercises associated with effective treatment planning and develop treatment plans using empirically supported treatments, knowledge of treatment ethics, and respect for individual differences. Learners engage in practice activities that address empirically supported crisis intervention, social justice issues with diverse populations, and opportunities to self-evaluate and monitor skills and attitudes.

The PsyD program provides a strong foundation for students to identify and seek out educational and career opportunities that match their personal goals. I’ve been able to build clinical skills through various practicum training opportunities working with individuals, groups and couples at Cal Lutheran’s Community Clinic, Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, and the Veteran Affairs Administration. Each of these experiences have allowed me to work with different patient populations using a variety of clinical skills, getting me one step closer to becoming a clinician at a large interdisciplinary organization.

Psychology PhD

Psychology as a scientific discipline aims to describe, understand, and predict the behavior of living organisms. In doing so, psychology embraces the many factors that influence behavior-from sensory experience to complex cognition, from the role of genetics to that of social and cultural environments, from the processes that explain behavior in early childhood to those that operate in older ages, and from typical development to pathological conditions. The Department of Psychology at Berkeley reflects the diversity of our discipline's mission covering six key areas of research: Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience; Clinical Science; Cognition; Cognitive Neuroscience; Developmental, and Social-Personality Psychology. Our program learning goals focus on honing methodological, statistical and critical thinking skills relevant to all areas of Psychology research, enabling students with sufficient breadth to retain perspective in the field of psychology and sufficient depth to permit successful independent and significant research.

  • The major academic objectives of the PhD program are for students to:
  • Develop an understanding of the different theoretical and empirical frameworks that have defined and shaped the field
  • Develop an understanding of the central questions and issues in contemporary psychology
  • Develop expertise in one or more relevant research methodologies
  • Build expertise in formulating testable hypotheses and designing appropriate studies
  • Hone ability to critically evaluate scientific research
  • Develop expertise in statistics and advanced data analytic approaches
  • Develop an awareness of the importance of science to humanity while recognizing its limits (i.e., some scientific knowledge is culture-specific and may not be applicable to the human condition universally)
  • Develop competence as a teacher of undergraduates and mentor to graduate students

Students select one of the following concentrations:

Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience: The Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience area encompasses faculty and students united by a common interest in the neurobiological/physiological bases of behavior, including but not limited to circadian and seasonal rhythms, decision-making, sex differentiation and behavior, energy balance, birdsong and animal communication, animal spatial orientation and navigation, gene-environment interactions, selective attention and visual perception, social behavior, attachment, developmental processes, physiological substrates of emotion and stress, and motivation. The methodologies currently employed by faculty and students cover the entire spectrum from the behavioral study of animals and humans to computational, cellular, molecular and neuroimaging analyses.

Clinical Science: Graduate students in Clinical Science combine rigorous research with hands-on clinical experience. In addition, students take courses that cover general areas of psychological science as well as more specialized areas based on a students interests. Most students will spend four to six years in residence at Berkeley plus one year at a Clinical Internship site, at or near the completion of the dissertation. Degrees are awarded after completion of the internship, even if the dissertation is completed earlier. The faculty advisor/mentor plays an important role in a students training. At the beginning of Year 1, each student is matched with a faculty advisor, usually one of the core Clinical Science Program Faculty, who supervises the student's research. In subsequent years, the student is free to continue working with that person or to seek a new research advisor. In addition to research supervision, the advisor works with the student in planning a program that fits that student's interests, while at the same time meeting program requirements. If a student is conducting research under the supervision of someone other than a core Clinical Science Program Faculty member (e.g., a faculty member in another area of the Psychology Department), then a core Clinical Science Program Faculty member is assigned to advise that student in matters related program requirements.

Cognition: The Cognition Program brings together faculty and students engaged in behavioral and computational investigations of fundamental cognitive processes, including learning, memory, categorization, reasoning, language, and perception. Our interdisciplinary approach borrows methods and insights from the cognitive sciences and other areas within the department.

Cognitive Neuroscience: Programs in Cognitive Neuroscience focus on neuroimaging and neuropsychological approaches to human behavior. Functional neuroimaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and intracranial EEG (iEEG) are used to study the neural bases of human behavior. Neuropsychological methods assess varieties of psychological dysfunction associated with brain damage or disease. Areas of specialty within this track include Sensory and Perceptual Processes, Attention and Working Memory, Learning and Memory, Emotion, and Motor Control.

Developmental: Our research goal is to understand how the organism and its capabilities develop throughout the lifespan. Our interdisciplinary approach is multi-species, multi-system, and multidisciplinary in nature. We study change over time in cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and neural processes. Our explanations include both neural accounts of the plasticity that is observed in the developing brain and other systems, and computational and psychological accounts of development. The bi-directionality of these processes is emphasized, with the organism's genetically program development being influenced by its physical and social environments and in turn influencing those environments. Thus, our research is situated at the interface between the fields of developmental psychology, computational modeling, psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology, developmental cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, cultural psychology, and clinical psychology. Our research examines numerous areas of development, plasticity, and change including sensory processes, cognitive capacities, language, reasoning, everyday knowledge of the world, emotions, and social relationships. We examine both typical and atypical development, each providing rich insights for better understanding the other and suggesting new approaches for effective treatments and preventive interventions.

Social-Personality Psychology: The social-personality program is devoted to training graduate students for careers in research and teaching. The program faculty and several affiliates conduct research and provide intensive training in six core areas of the field: (1) Self and identity; (2) Social cognition; (3) Emotion, emotion regulation, and affective neuroscience; (4) Personality processes and adult development; (5) Interpersonal, intergroup, and intercultural processes; and (6) Power, hierarchy, and social class. In addition to training in these core areas, the program encourages graduate students to develop their own research interests and build an independent research program. The program is characterized by considerable breadth and diversity. It provides students with special research opportunities, such as access to unique longitudinal databases, multi-method approaches (self-report, observational, archival, life-data, physiological), and biological perspectives on social behavior (e.g., evolutionary, neuroimaging).

There are other specializations from other degree programs that are also open to clinical psychology students. The specializations students can declare include:

  • Advanced Psychological Assessment* (APA) ( *open to CP students only )
  • Applied Psychophysiology (APH)
  • Complex Trauma and the Healing Process (CTHP)
  • Consciousness Spirituality Integrative Health (CSIH)
  • Creativity Studies (CS)
  • Existential and Humanistic Psychology (EHP)
  • Jungian Studies (JS)

Going beyond the mechanics of the body and brain, this program focuses on a holistic view of clients in a broader social and system context—directing students toward the person-centered and interpersonal dimensions of psychotherapy that are at the heart of therapeutic effectiveness.

Like the M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology degree programs, the clinical psychology degree program is grounded in existential, humanistic, and transpersonal psychology, seeking to apply such principles in all areas for clinical practice and research. More specifically, Saybrook’s clinical program is rooted in humanistic psychology and studies human experience in deeply subjective, historical, contextual, cross-cultural, and spiritual contexts. Each program is designed for graduates to promote health and wholeness as practitioners who are positioned to effect positive change through service and leadership in their chosen clinical field.

Saybrook University’s Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program is regionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) but does not have programmatic accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA). The hybrid online Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program may not meet year-in-residence requirements of some state professional licensing boards or agencies. To be eligible, graduates should consult their individual state licensing boards for any additional state-specific requirements.

Saybrook University’s Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology aligns with program requirements for professional licensure in several states. You will find more information on licensure on the professional licensure and certification disclosures page .

More program information can be found in our academic catalog .

“Grounded in humanistic principles, we are interested in fostering the ‘fullness’ of the clinician, aligning who they are with how they practice, in the healing process of populations being served.” —Dr. Theopia Jackson, chair,  clinical psychology degree program

Residential Orientation (RO)

All new students in the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program begin their studies with our one-time, two-day Residential Orientation (RO). ROs are held two days ahead of the Residential Learning Experience (RLE) at the start of the fall and spring semesters in California.

Residential Learning Experience (RLE)

Clinical psychology students participate in two five-day required Saybrook Residential Learning Experiences (RLEs) per year for the duration of the program (one at the beginning of the fall semester and one at the beginning of the spring semester). Students are required to attend the RLEs throughout their degree matriculation to ensure that they acquire ample residential hours required by states for eligibility for licensure.

If a student must miss an RLE due to a documented medical emergency or other approved reason, the student must notify the department chair or associate chair in advance. Students will be expected to make up a missed RLE, which is to be preapproved by the department chair. Failure to meet the residential requirement may delay graduation.

Students intending to earn their license in Washington State are required to attend an additional mid-term RLE held in Washington each term of enrollment. This requirement is due to Washington State expecting more in-person hours than the fall/spring RLEs afford.

Determinations regarding professional licensure eligibility associated with this program are outlined here .

PSY3045: Supervision in Clinical Psychology

Clinical supervision is a necessary aspect of training for clinicians. Through supervision, a clinician-in-training gains necessary clinical competencies in order to ensure that trainees’ clients receive effective and ethical service. This course critically examines methods, relationships, ethics, multiculturalism, and evaluative processes of clinical supervision. Special focus is given to establishing a meaningful supervisor-supervisee relationship. While students will learn about different theoretical orientations that may inform their supervisory experience, they will be encouraged to consider their role in these relationships from a humanistic standpoint that will foster growth in the supervisor, supervisee, and their clients. They will be asked to explore ways of navigating and growing from supervisory relationships that may be challenging or uncomfortable. In addition, students will be encouraged to reflect on their current progress, as well as goals in their own development as clinicians. Though open to all students, this course satisfies the Clinical Interventions III/IV requirement in the Clinical Psychology degree program, with Clinical Interventions I & II as prerequisites. Note: This course is open to CP students only. (3 credits)

PSY6070: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Applied within a Humanistic and Integrative Approach

This cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) course will offer a review of key foundational theories and concepts, as well as methods of assessing, conceptualizing, and treating patients using CBT approaches. Students will also learn about the efficacy and limitation evidence for utilizing CBT in treating symptoms of several disorders. In addition to learning the key concepts of CBT and practicing core skills, students will examine how CBT can be integrated with humanistic and other integrative therapy approaches. Though open to all students, this course satisfies the Clinical Interventions III/IV requirement in the Clinical Psychology degree program, with Clinical Interventions I & II as prerequisites. (3 credits)

PSY6050: Mindfulness and Spirituality in Clinical Practice

Mindfulness-based therapies are now accepted as “empirically supported” treatments and are often treatments of choice in mainstream clinical and medical settings. In addition, the prior mainstream taboo regarding spiritual and religious dimensions of life in psychotherapy has been supplanted by the publication of a plethora of texts published by the APA and others regarding the integration of these dimensions in clinical practice. This clinical course explores these recent trends that mirror aspects of the long-standing traditions of humanistic, transpersonal, and existential psychology in the integration of mindfulness-based meditation practices, spirituality, and religion and prayer in clinical practice. Through reflective inquiry, students will gain understanding regarding their own experience and views regarding these factors in therapy and how they might locate themselves in relationship to them professionally. Though open to all students, this course also satisfies the Clinical Interventions III and IV requirement in the Clinical Psychology degree program, with Clinical Interventions I & II as prerequisites. (3 credits)

As the year proceeds, students will have a better idea of their interests and the requirements for completing each area of emphasis. If you are still unsure, schedule an appointment with the PAU Academic Advising Center (PAAC).

14. When are financial aid refund disbursements available?

Choose the area that stands out to you to jump to that section.

  • Online PhD Psychology
  • Online PhD Behavioral Psychology
  • Online PhD Child & Adolescent Psychology
  • Online PhD Clinical Psychology
  • Online PhD Educational Psychology
  • Online PhD Forensic Psychology
  • Online PhD Organizational Psychology
  • Online PhD School Psychology

Each of these related subject areas can help prepare you for a different career path.

Online PhD in Psychology

A generalist degree in psychology can be applied in many domains. You may choose this path if you want a degree that can serve you well in varied positions or fields.

This may also be a good option if you don’t feel like any specialty doctoral programs are particularly suitable for your career goals and would prefer to customize your own course of study.

During your studies, you will likely take classes in statistics; the mathematics and analysis skills that you learn there can help prepare you to conduct reliable research.

The courses in generalist psychology degrees cover a variety of psychology disciplines. Topics may include epigenetics, neuroscience, memory, cognition, and developmental psychology.

A psychology PhD can help equip you with leadership and research skills that are useful in a variety of career settings. For example, you might work as a school administrator, a behavior analyst, or a marketing manager.

Online PhD in Behavioral Psychology

If you’re interested in why people make the choices they do and how thoughts and behavior influence one another, then consider making behavioral psychology your field of study.

This degree gives students opportunities to research behavior analysis and learn about motivating others to change their patterns of action.

You will likely take classes that specifically focus on the field of applied behavior analysis. Other courses may cover related topics like addiction, language development, education, child development, or self-control. You may also learn about the history of psychology and behavior analysis.

This program may be offered as a licensure track to help prepare to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

After earning your online PhD in Behavioral Psychology , you may be able to conduct research in behavior analysis, supervise a team of behavior analysts or work directly with clients who have autism or developmental delays.

Online PhD in Child & Adolescent Psychology

Working with kids and teens sometimes requires different skills and communication techniques than those needed when working with adults.

To expand your abilities to work with youths or conduct research among this age group, you’ll want to focus your studies on child and adolescent psychology.

Your classes will likely address developmental psychology and psychotherapy techniques to use when working with children and families. You may discuss how childhood crises like abuse and loss can have psychological effects throughout youth and beyond.

Related classes may cover how psychological principles can be applied in the juvenile correctional system and other difficult situations. You may complete a clinical internship in a child psychology facility.

A PhD in Child & Adolescent Psychology degree program may lead to licensure so that you can become a certified child or family psychologist. This career path can help you provide life-changing therapy services for youths in troubled situations.

Online PhD in Clinical Psychology

Serious mental illness can make life challenging, but clinical psychologists can provide help and support. Whether you choose to conduct research in this field or work directly with patients, you can help people work through their struggles.

Common studies in this degree include developmental psychology and psychotherapy techniques. The courses are typically designed to address counseling ethics and improve clinical skills, like interviewing patients and conducting assessments.

Most doctorate in clinical psychology programs require students to complete a year-long clinical internship for this degree; this component can help thoroughly prepare you for licensure.

Clinical psychologists often work directly with patients, particularly those with serious mental illnesses or behavior disorders. As you provide therapy, you may also conduct research projects and publish your findings.

You may choose to focus your clinical practice on a particular domain, such as health psychology or cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Online PhD in Educational Psychology

If you’re interested in furthering the science of learning, then a PhD in Educational Psychology may provide the foundation that you need. This branch of psychology deals with how people learn and how learning can be measured.

Common coursework in this doctoral program addresses educational theory and instructional methods. You should also study human development during childhood or throughout the lifespan.

To help you succeed in the realm of education, it may be important to cover topics like learning assessment, program analysis, and organizational leadership. You may also learn how to teach psychology to students.

A doctoral degree in educational psychology can help prepare you to lead institutions of learning. Some programs are geared toward working with adult learners, so you might do well as a college administrator.

You may also choose to work as a researcher who contributes toward a better understanding of how people assimilate new information.

Online PhD in Forensic Psychology

Did you ever consider going into law instead of pursuing a psychology career? You can bring those two interests together with a doctoral program in forensic psychology. This discipline addresses psychology topics and issues that relate to law, criminal justice, and corrections.

Experts in forensic psychology need to be well-versed in abnormal development and behavior. Students of forensic psychology study tough topics like violence, terrorism, and arson.

Your studies may prepare you to deliver expert testimony, counsel offenders, support law enforcement officers, or carry out hostage negotiations. Helping people cope with the effects of criminal or violent acts may be another focus of your doctoral work.

As a leader in forensic psychology, you may be hired by a criminal justice organization or serve as a consultant. For example, you might coach witnesses, teach police officers how to respond in crises or work with criminal offenders.

Online PhD in Organizational Psychology

Psychological principles can be greatly influential in the business world. Earning a PhD in Organizational Psychology can help you become a leader in the business world. This program can also be known as a PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

I/O professionals often hold leadership positions in businesses and other organizations. You could potentially assume a high level of responsibility in a human resources or project management department.

Alternatively, you might provide consulting services to organizations to help them improve morale or productivity.

This program typically includes classes in learning and cognition, childhood development, and behavior disorders. Becoming familiar with conducting assessments, identifying delays, and strategizing interventions can help you succeed in a school setting.

You will probably need to complete an internship, which may last around one year. Individual states set regulations about licensure for school psychologists, so it’s important to select a program that aligns with your state’s requirements.

As a school psychologist, you’ll probably pursue employment in a school system. Your responsibilities may include supporting students in the special education program. Other career options include working as a researcher or an educational consultant.

Plus, they can access a job board and may want to attend the organization’s conventions.

Certification and Licensure Following a Doctoral Psychology Program

Not all psychology PhDs pursue licensure, but it’s an important step for those who plan to engage in clinical practice. The following overview can provide a general idea of the steps you’ll need to take.

  • Enroll in a doctoral degree program. Choose a licensure PhD track — perhaps at a school that is accredited by the American Psychological Association.
  • Pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology and any other tests required by your state.
  • Earn clinical hours. While you may be able to earn some of these during school, many will have to be acquired during your postdoc period.
  • After finishing your degree, passing required tests and earning professional hours, apply for licensure with your state.

Each state sets its own licensure regulations; consult your state’s board to learn more about the specific steps that you’ll need to take. It’s also important to choose a program that complies with your state’s licensure requirements.

Accreditation for an Online PhD in Psychology

You’ll likely put a lot of time and money into earning your PhD in Psychology. It’s important that you receive a reputable degree in exchange for all that work. That’s why you should always make sure that your university holds proper accreditation.

Regional accreditation is one important distinction to consider. Any school focused on delivering quality academics will have applied for regional accreditation. Accrediting bodies grant this recognition to schools that consistently provide good learning experiences and opportunities for their students.

To ensure that your college meets this standard, look for accreditation from:

  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
  • WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)

Without regional accreditation, you have no guarantee of receiving a quality education. Your degree probably won’t mean much to employers or other schools.

For a doctoral program in psychology, it’s sometimes advised to look for schools that are also accredited by the American Psychological Association .

According to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education, APA has the authority to determine whether psychology programs meet industry standards and thoroughly prepare students for clinical practice and other psychology careers.

APA accreditation may not be essential if you don’t plan to seek licensure. In some states, though, only students with an APA-approved doctorate are eligible to become licensed psychologists.

Financial Aid for PhD in Psychology Students

Psychology graduate programs are expensive, but financial aid can put a PhD within your grasp.

There are government programs that exist specifically to help students fund their education. These include grants, low-interest loans, and work-study arrangements. You may be able to use both state and federal funding.

To learn about your eligibility for government help, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) .

As a doctoral student, you may qualify for other types of help as well. Your school may reduce your tuition in exchange for teaching lower-level classes. You may also receive scholarships or fellowships from your college, industry associations, or other community or national organizations.

If you need additional help, look into spreading out your payments. Private loans can make it so you won’t have to pay the full tuition cost right away.

Just keep in mind that private interest rates are usually higher than they are for government loans, so it’s smart to max out other types of financial aid first. You can also ask your school about the possibility of establishing a payment plan.

Questions Related to Earning PhD in Psychology Online

Here are our answers to a few more questions you might have in pursuing an online doctorate in psychology.

Can You Do a PhD Online?

Yes, you can do a PhD online. Many schools offer online PhD programs that are reputable, regionally accredited, and comparable to their on-campus counterparts.

Online PhDs are available in a vast number of disciplines, including psychology. Although these programs allow you to take classes and submit coursework online, you may need to complete in-person practicums or internships.

Can You Get a PhD Online in Psychology?

Yes, you can get a PhD online in Psychology. There are a number of colleges that offer online programs for studying psychology at the PhD level.

These programs can help equip you with the in-depth knowledge needed to lead organizations, spearhead change, conduct research, develop new theories, or teach students. Some online PhD in Psychology programs may prepare you for licensure.

Is a PsyD or PhD Better?

Both of these options can be valuable degrees. Which one you should get depends on your career goals. Consider choosing a PsyD if you know you want to be a counseling practitioner. Consider getting a PhD if you enjoy statistics, and your goals include becoming a researcher or a college faculty member.

Are Online PhD Programs Accredited?

You should have no trouble finding an online PhD program with regional accreditation. Accrediting bodies confer this status on online schools just like they do for on-campus programs.

Programmatic accreditation for online psychology programs is harder to come by, though — especially when it comes to APA accreditation. Hybrid programs are more likely to hold APA accreditation than fully online ones.

Are There Any APA Accredited Online PsyD Programs?

Although online PsyD programs are eligible for APA accreditation, just like on-campus programs, the organization has not given lasting accreditation to any fully online programs.

Instead, you may want to look into a hybrid PsyD program so that you can earn some of your credits in a flexible online format.

What’s the Difference between a PsyD and PhD in Psychology?

A Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) is a professional doctorate for acquiring practical knowledge and skills for providing clinical services. Students in PsyD online programs spend significant time in practicum and internship settings to gain as much hands-on practice as possible.

Choosing this approach for your studies can help prepare you to provide psychological services to patients in individual or group settings.

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology is a research-focused program. Although you may still complete internships in the psychology field, they may not be until close to the end of your studies. Instead, you’ll likely spend more time on research skills, statistics, and data analysis.

If you have your sights set on a full-time career in research or academia, this is typically the right educational path to select. Becoming licensed may be a possibility, but only some PhD in Psychology programs are licensure tracks.

Ultimately, the difference between PsyD vs. PhD comes down to the type of career you want to pursue in the psychology sector.

What’s the Difference between a PhD Psychology and a PhD Counseling Psychology Online?

A PhD in Psychology is a general program that can give you insight into human thought and behavior. A generalist psychology degree is often a non-licensure track.

It can be useful for those who want to teach psychology at the college level, become researchers, use their psychology knowledge in business or organizational leadership, or serve as consultants.

For those who want to work directly with clients, a PhD in Counseling Psychology may offer a path to licensure. This degree program typically includes classes on counseling practices, group therapy, abnormal development, and psychological assessments.

You will probably have to engage in a lengthy internship experience as well. If you want to see patients in private practice or as a member of a healthcare team, it’s a good idea to choose a PhD in Counseling Psychology, a PhD in Clinical Psychology or a Doctor of Psychology program.

Is a PhD in Psychology Worth It?

Yes, a PhD in Psychology degree is worth it for many students. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market in life, physical, and social science is projected to grow by 5% for the next decade. Common careers in this field include school psychologist, forensic psychologist, industrial-organizational psychologist, postsecondary education administrator, and human resources manager.

If you have a keen interest in how people think, act, and develop, then consider soaking up as much knowledge on the topic as you can by enrolling in an online PhD in Psychology program.

Earning your doctorate can help elevate you to expert status in this field and prepare you to teach students, perform original research, and make a significant difference for individuals or organizations. Getting your doctorate may also qualify you to pursue licensure in your state.

In the United States, each state makes its own rules regarding the educational requirements for licensure of psychologists. As such, requirements for professional licensure and certification can vary markedly by state. The JFK School of Psychology at National University, Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) meets the educational degree completion requirements for licensure in the state of  California  as a Licensed Psychologist.

The curriculum requirements of the PsyD Program enable students to sit for the National Psychology Licensing Exam (EPPP). Completion of the PsyD Program allows the student to sit for the EPPP in any state, provided that all curricular requirements are satisfied.

It is important to know that some states require that students have a degree from an APA-accredited program. In addition, some agencies of the federal government only hire graduates of APA-accredited programs. If you wish to work for such an agency, please contact them directly for further information on hiring requirements.

We advise you to contact your state licensing and certification body to ensure the degree will meet requirements for licensure in the state in which you seek to be licensed. For licensing board contact information and approval status, please see the  Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards  website. For all students, applicants, or prospective students seeking licensure in any state, please review the chart below outlining the University’s determination about the program’s curriculum and how it relates to the state educational requirements for licensure or certification in that respective state.

California All other states, including the District of Columbia and the US protectorates, as defined in 34 CFR §600.2.

It is strongly encouraged that students, applicants, and prospective students determine any additional (i.e., non-educational) requirements for licensure in the state in which they seek to be licensed. Many licensure boards require more than successful degree completion to obtain a license, such as completion of an examination(s), test(s), background check(s), internship/practicum hours, and other requirements determined by the respective state board. It is the responsibility of the student completing the licensure program to check with the respective state licensing board(s) for the most recent information, rules and requirements.

Clinical training in the program is comprised of three components: an internal practicum completed at one of two university-operated clinics (Oxnard and Westlake Village) that provide low-cost counseling services to patients in their communities; an external practicum in which students work with professionals in the field at community partner facilities; and a one-year, full-time or two-year, part-time internship. California’s Top Online Clinical Psychology Programs in 2024

Due to the requirement for face-to-face interaction between the therapist and patient in clinical psychology practice, only a handful of clinical psychology programs in California offer online coursework. Furthermore, clinical psychology degree programs usually mandate a substantial number of supervised professional practice hours that must be completed in-person and are necessary to obtain a license as a professional counselor (LPC), marriage and family therapist (LMFT), or psychologist in California.

Students who choose one of the few available online clinical psychology programs in California will complete all or part of their coursework online, supplemented by in-person clinical training experiences such as practicums and internships. Most programs also require students to attend one or more face-to-face residencies (such as orientations, seminars, conferences, etc.) on the school’s campus or other designated locations.

Accreditation for Clinical Psychology Programs in California

Accreditation is the process by which postsecondary education programs–and the schools that offer them–are determined to meet specific standards of academic quality. Proper accreditation is how you can be sure that the clinical psychology degree or certificate program in California that you choose is worth your time and money. There are two types of accreditation to look for in your search of the best clinical psychology programs in California: institutional and programmatic. Institutional accreditation concerns the vetting of a school’s academic quality as a whole. It is an absolute must for any school offering a graduate-level clinical psychology program. This is especially true for master’s programs because clinical psychology master’s programs in the U.S. are not programmatically accredited. Institutional accreditation of California colleges and universities is administered primarily by the WASC Senior College and University Commission .

Programmatic accreditation refers to the vetting of specific degree programs. The primary accrediting body of clinical psychology PsyD and PhD programs in the U.S. is the APA . In addition, a small but growing number of clinical psychology PhD programs in California are accredited by the PCSAS . Consider only those clinical psychology doctoral degree programs that are APA and/or PCSAS accredited.

You can check the accreditation status of clinical psychology programs by using these WASC , APA , and PCSAS search engines.

To graduate, learners must pass a comprehensive exam and complete a dissertation in addition to a 200-hour social justice practicum at an aligned community site.

  • Application Fee: $32
  • Degree Credit Requirements: 90 credits
  • Notable Major-Specific Courses: Organizational theory; job and task analysis
  • In-Person Requirements: Yes, practicum required

While an online psychology doctoral degree has its upsides, it isn’t the right move for everyone. In light of the huge commitment of time and money—to say nothing of effort—think hard about factors like budget, scheduling and learning style.

Online doctoral programs often cost less than campus programs since they allow you to save on big-ticket expenses like housing and transportation. Plus, some state schools extend in-state tuition rates to all online learners, regardless of their state residency status.

Online learning provides flexibility to work around work and family obligations. However, some programs mix asynchronous lessons with synchronous events like discussion groups.

Remote learning works well for disciplined self-starters. But if you need the accountability and support that come with in-person learning, an online doctoral program might not be a good fit for you.

There are two kinds of accreditation to consider in online psychology doctoral programs: institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is given by bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). To receive federal financial aid, you must attend an accredited institution. Several institutions on this list have earned accreditation by regional agencies like SACSCOC or the Higher Learning Commission.

Programmatic accreditation proves that a degree has been vetted to meet certain academic standards. The primary accreditor for post-graduate psychology programs in the U.S. is the American Psychology Association (APA), which accredits Ph.D. and Pys.D. programs. APA accredits specific degrees, not departments. You can find programs using APA’s accredited programs search tool . WHAT

To confirm a college’s accreditation status, search CHEA’s directory .

Consider Your Future Goals

To choose the best program for you, think through your long-term career goals. This helps inform whether you should pursue a Psy.D. or Ph.D. and what kind of field experience you may need to complete.

Programs vary in their focus on clinical application of psychological principles versus research and classroom instruction. For example, William James College’s Pys.D. in leadership psychology allows learners to work an additional 150 practicum hours beyond the program requirement. The extra hands-on experience could help you prepare for more specialized psychology careers .

A degree from an APA-accredited program is required for some employment opportunities and, in some states, licensure. If you intend to become a licensed psychologist after graduation, make sure your program prepares you for this path.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

The programs on this list vary greatly in terms of cost. On the high end, the Chicago School at Los Angeles charges $1,703 per credit. At $528 per credit, Keiser University-Ft. Lauderdale offers the cheapest option. Both programs require 60 credits, putting our range between about $31,000 and $102,000.

Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) to learn about financial aid opportunities. Other financing options to explore include assistantships, scholarships, grants and loans.

How long does it take to get a doctorate in psychology?

A psychology doctorate typically takes four to six years, but some programs can be completed in less time. In addition to coursework, programs generally require clinical or practicum hours and a dissertation.

Is it worth it to get a doctorate in psychology?

A doctorate in psychology is not easy to obtain, but it can help you land an in-demand job that tends to pay well. However, many people pursue this degree out of personal interest rather than a desire for financial gain.

Is a Psy.D. higher than a Ph.D.?

Both degrees concern the same subject matter, but a Psy.D. focuses on clinical practice, while a Ph.D. has more to do with scientific research. Ph.D., or Doctor of Philosophy , programs are more common and contain more sub-fields. A Psy.D., or Doctor of Psychology, focuses on preparing students to serve clients and patients.

Is a psychology doctorate hard?

Doctorate programs are generally difficult and take a long time to complete. The vast field of psychology features training in both the natural and social sciences. In addition to years of coursework, most psychology doctorate programs require supervised practicum hours and an original dissertation.

B) Three Letters of Recommendation:

It is your choice who you would like to choose as your recommenders. Your letters of recommendation can be submitted electronically by your recommenders either before or after you submit the application for Graduate Admission. It is also possible to send your letter of recommendation requests to your recommenders before you submit the application. The applications with GRE scores will not be given greater weight than those that do not include scores. During the 2020 and 2021 admission cycles combined, 25% of applicants to the UCLA Psychology graduate program submitted GRE General Test scores. The number of applicants that applied, submitted GRE scores, and the percentage of applicants that submitted GRE scores, organized by Area, can be found in the table below.

  • GRE Psychology Subject Test:  Consistent with the policy of the UCLA Department of Psychology, applicants to the clinical psychology doctoral program at UCLA will not be required to take the GRE. The GRE Psychology Subject Test is not required and will not be used to make admissions decisions. However, applicants who score above the 70 th  percentile can use the GRE Subject Test to partially fulfill Discipline-Specific Knowledge requirements (e.g., cognitive, social) that are part of accreditation by the American Psychological Association. In this way, admitted students may be able to reduce the amount of, or more flexibly select, coursework needed to complete program requirements. Students may elect to take the GRE Subject Test after their admission into our program and all program requirements can be fulfilled without taking the test.
  • To ensure your official test scores are properly processed if you choose to submit them, please be sure the personal information provided in the UCLA application for Graduate Admission matches exactly the information provided to the testing service. Do not wait for your test results to complete the application. Educational Testing Service (ETS) sends scores electronically to UCLA. The institution code for UCLA is 4837. The department/major code is not necessary.
  • Official GRE test scores  cannot be more than five years old . If the GRE tests are taken more than once, the most recent scores are considered.
  • Quantitative program applicants: Quantitative psychology is by definition very reliant on quantitative skill sets which can be demonstrated in a number of ways: performance in mathematics courses, performance on the quantitative section of the GRE, and/or letters of recommendation speaking to your quantitative expertise. When reading applications, we will look for demonstrated ability in quantitative skills, but this should not require a GRE score if other parts of your application speak to these skills. If you are unsure whether you should or should not include GRE scores in your application to UCLA, please feel free to contact the quantitative area faculty.
  • TOEFL or IELTS EXAM:  INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS whose first language is not English must submit an official TOEFL (Test of English As a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score. Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a university located in the United States or in another country in which English is both the primary spoken language of daily life and the language of instruction (i.e., Australia, Barbados, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, United Kingdom) and the medium of instruction, or who have completed at least two years of full-time study at such an institution, are exempted from both the TOEFL/IELTS requirement and the English as a Second Language Placement Examination. The minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores are 560 on the paper and pencil test, 220 on the computer-based test, or 87 on the internet-based test (TOEFL/IBT), or overall band score of 7.0 (IELTS). TOEFL and IELTS test scores are valid for only two years. Educational Testing Service (ETS) sends scores electronically to UCLA. The institution code for UCLA is 4837. The department/major code is not necessary. Please contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for GRE and TOEFL test scheduling, registration, and information. Clinical Psychology PhD Programs Online

Psychology is an interesting and important field of study. Professional psychologists help people through mental illnesses, life stresses, and major decisions.

Whether a psychologist works as a practitioner or researcher, they can contribute to the well-being of other people. If your goal is to become a clinical psychologist, then you’ll first be required to earn a doctoral degree, such as a PhD.

The requirements for a psychology PhD may include:

  • Doctoral-level coursework
  • Writing and defending a dissertation

The classes for this degree might cover advanced topics in various branches of psychology, such as social and behavioral psychology. You might also study ethics, assessment techniques, and pharmacology.

Research classes can be important for doctoral students as well. They can help prepare you for conducting your own original research and writing your dissertation. Clinical psychologists’ work often focuses on people with mental illnesses. Within this field, you can choose to specialize in a particular area. Examples include treating adolescent patients or working in the criminal justice system.

During your program, you will spend time working in real-world psychology settings. You can gain quite a lot of experience through these practicums and internships. Accredited psychology doctorates may balance online and in-person learning. Taking some classes online could help you fit schooling into a busy schedule. Industry-accredited colleges also have students come to campus for a portion of their studies.

Earning a PhD from a program accredited by the American Psychology Association (APA) will qualify you to take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. A passing score is required for state psychology licensure.

With licensure, you could become a practicing psychologist who treats patients. Some psychology professionals also join a college faculty, lead a mental health organization, conduct research, or work as a consultant.

Common Online PhD in Clinical Psychology Concentrations

Most psychology PhD students specialize in a particular area of psychology. Doing so can increase your expertise in that area and tailor your education to your professional goals.

  • Child Psychology . For a career spent working with children and their families, you may want a doctoral program that focuses on the psychological needs of young people. You can learn about human development, child-onset disorders, and treatment options for kids and adolescents.
  • Forensic Psychology . After completing this specialization, you’ll know more about mental health law, the role of expert witnesses, criminal profiling, and juvenile justice. The courses will help prepare you for a job in the criminal justice system.
  • Healthcare Psychology . Professionals in health psychology study the relationship between the mind and the body. They use psychological principles to influence people’s health behaviors and outcomes.
  • Industrial-Organizational Psychology . The field of I-O psychology addresses psychological factors—such as conflict, group culture, and change management—in workplace settings. Choosing this track might prepare you to work as a consultant.
  • Teaching and Instruction . If you have an academic career in mind, then you might want to choose a teaching specialization that will prepare you for the role. You may learn how to design curriculum, deliver instruction, conduct evaluations, and supervise psychology students.

Your concentration track will probably influence the setting that you choose for your psychology PhD internship. It should play a role in selecting the topic for your dissertation as well.

Clinical Psychology Careers and Salaries

Clinical Psychology Careers and Salaries

The goal of many students is to earn a clinical psychology PhD so they can become licensed and work as practicing psychologists.

Clinical psychologists may see patients in private clinics, hospitals, and mental health facilities. Although clinical psychology will be your overarching field of practice, your work might overlap with other branches of psychology as well. Depending on your previous training and your professional interests, you might be involved with industrial-organizational, forensic, or school psychology, for example.

You could also work as a counselor or a therapist by a different name. For instance, you might be considered a substance abuse counselor, a mental health counselor, a marriage and family therapist, or a behavioral disorder counselor.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , psychologists earn a median annual salary of $81,040.

Industrial-Organizational Psychologists $105,310
Psychologists (All Other) $102,900
Medical and Health Services Managers $101,340
Social Scientists and Related Workers (All Other) $84,430
Clinical and Counseling Psychologists $82,510
School Psychologists $78,780
Postsecondary Psychology Teachers $77,860
Social and Community Service Managers $74,000
Marriage and Family Therapists $49,880
Substance Abuse, Behavioral Disorder, and Mental Health Counselors $48,520

Job titles and qualifications for some counseling and therapy roles vary from one state to the next. Earning a doctorate might advance your qualifications for leadership roles.

Some professionals lead other psychologists and counselors as the head of a nonprofit or community agency. Others might manage a healthcare organization, especially one that specializes in the field of mental health. People with PhDs sometimes teach college classes. As a professor, you might work with undergraduate or graduate students. Also, part of that job might involve research.

Being a researcher is a career path that you could pursue outside of an academic setting as well. Social scientists may work for the government or organizations that focus on education, marketing, healthcare, or human services.

Admissions Requirements

Doctoral programs are rigorous, so you’re often required to submit application materials that show you’re up to the challenge. Common requirements include:

  • College transcripts that show courses taken, GPA, and degrees earned
  • GRE scores, including the GRE Psychology subject test (often optional or not required)
  • Letters of reference
  • A resume that shows relevant experience in research or clinical practice
  • Sample of your writing

Many schools accept applicants who have earned a Bachelor of Psychology online or on-campus, as well as those with traditional bachelor’s degrees. While a master’s degree or graduate certificate in psychology may not be a requirement, it could potentially reduce the number of doctoral classes that you’re required to take. A growing number of universities now offer a masters in clinical psychology online .

Clinical Psychology Doctorate Programs Accreditation

Regional accreditation serves as a testament to a school’s reliability. Colleges apply for accreditation and are evaluated by one of the nation’s seven regional accrediting agencies .

After showing that they meet the organization’s standards, they are approved as regionally accredited institutions. Accreditation can make a difference in your educational experience and your career. Choosing a regionally accredited school is essential for using financial aid, transferring credits, qualifying for licensure, and being hired as a psychologist.

PhD in Clinical Psychology Programs APA Accreditation

In addition to regional accreditation, it’s also advisable to look for programmatic accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA) . This industry organization evaluates doctorate in clinical psychology programs to make sure that they properly prepare students to work as professional psychologists.

Becoming licensed may depend on attending an APA accredited school. State regulations can vary, but accreditation is a common requirement. The APA does not accredit online-only programs, so at least a portion of your studies would need to be done in person.

Clinical Psychology Licensure and Certifications

To work as a professional clinical psychologist who sees patients independently, it’s necessary to become licensed by your state after graduating with your doctorate.

The application packet that you send to your state may include:

  • Fee (often several hundred dollars)
  • Transcripts showing completion of an APA-accredited psychology doctorate
  • Records detailing your practicum and internship hours
  • Passing score on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology

In addition, the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) offers board certification in various specialty areas. Examples of specialty areas include forensic psychology, clinical neuropsychology, serious mental illness, police and public safety, and clinical child and adolescent.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

There may be funding opportunities available to you to help you cover the cost of your doctoral studies. State or federal government loans could help with upfront tuition payments. Some students might also receive grants. The first step is to see if you qualify by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) .

You could explore scholarship or fellowship opportunities from various organizations as well. Examples include national psychology groups or membership associations. Some colleges offer stipends to PhD students, but they may be reserved for those in on-campus programs. If you’re an online student with a full-time job, your workplace might contribute.

What Can You Do with a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology?

Having a doctorate in clinical psychology can help qualify you to become licensed in your state as a professional psychologist.

Licensed clinical psychologists work with people who have mental illnesses or other mood or behavioral concerns. Psychologists often see patients in hospitals, mental health clinics, or educational settings. Teaching college classes could be another line of work to consider.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, full-time professors often engage in research in addition to teaching. Some PhD graduates are managers. They may lead teams of healthcare staff or employees of nonprofit mental health organizations.

How Long Is an Online Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program?

You might be able to earn your online doctorate in clinical psychology within 3 to 5 years. It will depend on the program’s requirements and how much time you can commit to your studies. Part-time enrollment usually takes longer than full-time.

Online programs without dissertation requirements may take just 3 years. PhDs that include a dissertation often last longer. The exact length will depend on how quickly your project comes together, but many students spend about 5 years on their PhD studies. Schools often allow up to 7 or 8 years for finishing the program.

What’s the Difference Between PsyD vs. PhD Programs in Clinical Psychology?

There are two types of doctoral programs available to psychology students. Either can lead to a successful career, but it’s worthwhile to learn the differences between them.

Both types of doctoral programs usually include internships and can be accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

What’s the Difference Between Doctoral Programs in Clinical Psychology vs. Counseling Psychology?
