'Jawan' movie review: SRK is sublime, but the film...

A still from the movie 'Jawan'

In Jawan , Shah Rukh Khan manifests as a mythical being, a godly figure. His introduction occurs when the residents of a kindly village pray for deliverance. He makes an entrance—fittingly from the sky—amid shrieks of pain and streaks of lightning. Just so you don’t miss the parallels, director Atlee has a huge prop of goddess Kaali, and in case you still miss it, Shah Rukh Khan emulates the goddess’ pose, when he stands, hands with weapons and a foot on a fallen adversary. Much like our divine protectors, SRK has more than one avatar in the film. Much like them, he exerts protective influence, not just as an adult but even as a foetus. Perhaps that’s why, try as he might, Vijay Sethupathi, playing evil entrepreneur Kaali Gaekwad, simply cannot kill him. At one point, expressing a sort of dry amusement that Vijay Sethupathi has mastered by now, Kaali even checks SRK’s body for bullet wounds just to make sure it’s all there.

Only the god-like hero is immune to fatal damage though. Everyone else is fair game—and in Atlee’s universe, deaths are devices to shock you into caring. Well-meaning villagers get massacred. Farmers commit suicide—and Atlee ensures that you see it in full detail. A bunch of poor people—no, wait, let’s be more specific— poor children die asphyxiated in a hospital. A noble collector dies of poisoning. A bunch of soldiers get killed in action. And if none of this works on you, a woman—not just any woman—a mother… is sentenced to death. All of this is the film nudging you, imploring you, blackmailing you, into caring. Listen, I wanted to—hell, isn’t that why we even watch films—but I just needed to know these people a bit more. More importantly, I just needed to see that the film first cared about them, and did not, like its villain, Kaali, see people as tools to be dispensed with for selfish reasons.

Women especially have been in much danger in Atlee’s filmography. In Raja Rani, a woman gets bumped off in a road accident. In Theri , a woman, not just any woman—a mother!—gets murdered for no fault of hers. In Mersal (a film I often thought of, while watching Jawan ), a woman dies during a surgery. In Jawan , one is hanged—after the villain makes (I never thought I’d ever write the following) hanging-victim-faces at her. Another woman gets shot. The multiple-roles angle and the back-and-forth nature of the screenplay got me thinking a lot of Mersal , but I think Jawan is the most Shankar-esque version of Atlee yet.

Jawan , in fact, feels like Shankar on steroids. Shankar (who Atlee assisted) is well-known for often employing the vigilante justice idea and for usually centering such films on a social justice issue. In Jawan , Atlee crams in as many issues as possible. Here’s something about weapons manufacturing. Here’s something about government hospitals being neglected. Here are a couple of issues that Tamil cinema has been having for breakfast, lunch and dinner: Farmer suicides and heartless factory owners. There’s some blink-and-miss commentary on the purpose of prisons as well. These are all important issues, topics so vast and with so much potential that entire feature films would struggle to handle them individually. The problem with Jawan isn’t that it tries to cram in as many issues; it’s that the film doesn’t really seem to care… a lot like how it doesn’t really seem to invest emotionally in its characters.

The best Shankar films ensure that you see how much the vigilante protagonists—and through them, the director himself—care about the social issue(s). Such films are not in a tearing hurry to create memorable moments; they know the value of earning our emotional investment first. In Jawan , the social issues—like the film’s murder victims—feel simply like tools being utilised to create an attractive ‘product’. That’s perhaps why the characters feel unidimensional and cold. SRK turns on superstar charisma to make us feel invested in his characters, Vikram and Azad, but the writing of the film doesn’t really provide him with a lot of assistance. If it did, we would care about at least one of the two mini love stories in this film. If it did, the film wouldn’t have to keep resorting to manipulative shots of its characters shedding tears without conviction. They are crying; why won’t you? In Jawan , the tears and the deaths, the politics and the characters, they all feel like mechanical variables of a cold equation. When a woman dies towards the end, for instance, the void is simply a placeholder for another character to fill up, so we get an elevation scene. There’s no real emotion. It’s all checks and balances in the making of a viable product.

In Atlee’s previous work, Bigil —promoted as a women empowerment film—the women served as accessories in a hero elevation exercise. This time, Atlee does better. The women actually do some fighting, and in two big moments, they perform unexpectedly violent acts of resistance. One smashes a face while the other creates a murder weapon out of a pen. Nayanthara gets a few cool slow-mo shots as well. And yet, the question remains. For all the Vikram-like fancy introductions to Azad’s team of women—Jhanvi, Helana, Eeram, etc.—do any of them really come across as a real person with a unique identity? The women still come across as ‘dependents’, with traditional roles like motherhood getting valourised and held as the height of feminine strength. Nayanthara’s Narmada, for instance, chooses her foetus over her partner. She also implies that only a father can provide children with a genuine sense of protection. Never mind that she herself is supposed to be a bad-ass capable of fighting off multiple men with ease. In another scene, a farmer’s daughter gets enraged to kill right after her mother’s mangalsutra is snatched.

But no, Jawan isn’t a washout. It’s a film with many ideas but not quite the genuine emotional interest needed to really wade into them. A whole jail of women uniting to raise a child is a great idea (it reminded me somewhat of a similar idea in The Dark Knight Rises , or maybe that’s because there’s a Bane-like character in this film as well). There’s another interesting idea of hostages deciding to root for the ‘bad guys’. There’s all the Shankar-esque—or perhaps it’s time to say Atlee-esque—enjoyable ostentation in presentation. There are some great shots, like bandages being eaten by fire to reveal a hero’s face. Oh, and there’s definite political utility in who this film sees as enemies. Jawan shows that a real patriot isn’t one who stands by the government; it’s a man who isn’t afraid to take on corruption even when it’s—and especially when it’s—within the government. It’s a man who speaks truth at the cost of personal peril. And when such a man is played by SRK who breaks the fourth wall and urges you to ask questions of elected representatives, there’s definite utility there.

But I only wish these ideas were truly seen for their value—and not just as decorative trinkets. Jawan is shiny, bright, and expensive, but ultimately—and as often is the case with anything shiny, bright, and expensive—devoid of soul. If I had to pick a parallel from within the film, I’d liken it to a shiny gun, one that’s packed with cool features and stylish to hold… but won’t fire when you most need it to.

Jawan is an exemplary homage to both Indian and Western action flicks that inundated the industries in the early nineties. The movie could well be on its way to replicate what Top Gun Maverick did to an ailing Hollywood, in Bollywood. Slick action sequences, paired with romance, filial affections and some amazing music makes Jawan a perfect watch. That, paired with a double dose of Shah Rukh Khan is well worth the money. Spoiler alert! There is no Thalapathy Vijay and Sanjay Dutt’s cameo will blow your minds! Jawan 2 coming

Shah Rukh Khan impresses with his dual performance in Atlee’s first Hindi directorial venture. This action-packed spectacle hits all the right marks, paying homage to the action blockbusters of the 1990s while embracing contemporary Southern cinema aesthetics. Nevertheless, Jawan’s true essence lies in its celebration of the iconic Shah Rukh Khan. When you introduce Nayanthara as a formidable action heroine into the mix, you’ve got a definite triumph on your hands.

Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan packs a punch in this massy, meaningful actioner

Jawan review: shah rukh khan is undeniably massy in this atlee directorial co-starring nayanthara..

A Shah Rukh Khan film releasing is nothing short of a festival, and I say this with utmost surety because it's not everyday that you see a theatre housefull for a 6am show. After starting the year with a bang with a blockbuster Pathaan, SRK's Jawan goes one level up - both on being overtly dramatic and loaded with high-octane action. Writer-director Atlee presents Khan in an all-new avatar - rough, tough, gritty yet not without his impeccable wit. (Also read: Jawan review and release live updates )

Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan brings more drama and action with his new film.

Jawan is an SRK show from start to end, and it's double the treat watching him in a dual role. From his heroic entry scene to the fights to dance numbers, there's nothing that he can't do and makes you believe in it as well. At 57, turning 58 in November, SRK bowls you over with his action. Given the amount of action he has done in Jawan, it appears that Pathaan was a mere teaser. Atlee makes sure he doesn't disappoint audiences in his Hindi directorial debut, as he blends all the elements of commercial cinema to build a massy entertainer.

Jawan doesn't conform to any set templates or tropes and mixes everything that makes for an engaging and entertaining watch. Mention commercial, masala potboiler with action, drama, song and romance and Jawan has it all in abundance. I won't even say don't apply brains, please do because it highlights some important topics. The nearly 3-hour long film tells a compelling tale of prevalent corruption at various levels in the system that affects the common man in the most brutal ways. Thankfully, at no point it gets preachy, though it goes into a social commentary zone for a while, especially with a monologue from SRK towards the end.

Jawan's non-linear narrative starts in the present day and moves 30 years ahead and then uses flashback to explain the why and how. I won't share highlights of the plot for they may get spoilery. But, one can safely say that Jawan is not entirely a revenge drama but every sequence is a short story in itself with an elaborate flashback reasoning the current actions. Somehow, that also seems to be a problematic thing for I missed the consistency in storytelling. Jawan doesn't let you stay on one story for too long and hops on to the next too soon, thus breaking the flow.

What's consistent in Jawan is the top-notch and intricately choreographed action that offers an absolute cinematic experience. All the hype about Bollywood meets South makes sense when you see so much south ka tadka, especially in slo-mo shots, gravity-defying action with men flying and hero with his demigod status. A full-on actioner, it takes on the burning topic of farmer suicides over non repayment of smallest of bank loans. Given what the country went through in the past year witnessing mass farmer protests, the subject instantly strikes a chord, and makes you think hard. There this one moment showing a farmer hanging himself from a tree, and that spine-chilling scene leaves you heartbroken.

Another time, Jawan touches upon the corruption in healthcare system and the sad conditions of government hospitals. The film switches tone from being an actioner to a lighter tale in no time. There are two parallel stories running simultaneously. In one, Narmada (Nayanthara), head of Force Once is looking for Vikram Rathore (SRK) who put the lives of 376 passengers at risk while pulling off a perfect hijack. The second story shows Narmada and Azad Rathore (also SRK) falling for each other. Meanwhile, the baddie, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi) an arms dealer, has a history with Vikram Rathore and Azad gradually becomes a part of their story.

SRK's army of girls is the backbone of Jawan and it's heartening to see that each of them get enough screen time to shine and form an integral part of the film's story and screenplay. Doctor Eram (Sanya Malhotra) was wrongly framed in the killing of 57 innocent kids and ends up in prison while Kalki (Lehar Khan) as a farmer's daughter wants to avenge her father's death. Helena (Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) the ethical hacker and Lakshmi (Priyamani) as the girl-next-door have interesting character arcs. Along with their chief, all these girls showcase determination, conviction and grit.

For each stunt he plans, SRK dons a new look and much to the delight of his fans, he aces them all. Especially that metro hijack sequence where Khan sported a bald look that created enough buzz after the teaser dropped, shows him like never before. As a young Azad, he wooed with his lover-boy image and as Vikram with grey hair and a cigarette in his mouth, he carries unmatched swag.

Matching SRK's stardom, Vijay Sethupathi brings his own charm and gravitas. His portions are powerful and menacing. In his young as well as aged avatar, Sethupathi doesn't let go of the fear he evokes with his presence. His confrontation scene with Vikram ahead of the climax is brilliantly written and shot with a tinge of humour. Nayanthara brings freshness and is greeted with a slo-mo shot each time she comes on screen. Sadly though, her chemistry with Khan fails to ignite any sparks and it's quite bland. Deepika Padukone, on the other hand, as Vikram Rathore's wife Aishwarya, in a special appearance, is a treat to watch. There's even a dance number featuring the two, giving full-on Chennai Express nostalgia. Sunil Grover as officer Irani is a revelation and you wish there was more of him on screen and more for him to do.

Jawan's screenplay by Atlee and S. Ramanagirivasan is engaging and gripping but Sumit Arora's dialogues are quite forgettable and average considering the scale the movie is mounted on. Other than the one line when SRK says, 'Bete ko haath lagane se pehle baap se baat kar' nothing really stays with you for long.

Nevertheless, Jawan is a wholesome watch that won't give you any dull moment. Keep your eyes and mind focused on screen for there's a lot to take in and you don't want to miss the action or know why it's happening in the first place. Watch out for a climax that's one paisa vasool moment.

jawan movie review indian express

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan  resumes his much-anticipated comeback with “Jawan” (Hindi for “Soldier”), a high-toned action-adventure about a well-meaning terrorist and his crack team of hostage-taking girls with guns.

Khan’s revival began a year ago with a prominent cameo in the otherwise meh mythofantastic superhero pic “ Brahmastra  Part One: Shiva .” Then in, January, he stormed the box office with the lead role in “ Pathaan ,” a manic spy thriller and the most recent installment in the Yash Raj cinematic universe. “Jawan” will probably delight Khan’s established fans, and maybe uninitiated viewers, too, if only because he’s comfortably playing the hits, now with somewhat greater conviction and a little more polish.

“Jawan” was produced by the star and his wife Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment production company, so it’s not surprising to see how well-worn and carefully navigated the movie’s contrived plot and conventional mood swings tend to be. This is a Shah Rukh Khan vehicle, and by now, that conjures certain formulaic expectations. Still, the makers of “Jawan” spend a little too much trying to convince viewers that we don’t  really  know Khan’s mysterious antihero, who, after an overproduced but still rousing flashback action sequence, takes a train-ful of commuters hostage.

Khan’s character, soon revealed to be Azad, the warden of a women’s prison, seemingly executes a woman in a burqa, all while wearing a goofy bald cap, which he soon rips off. Khan, in character, rasps out his expectations-flouting demands to the generically incensed negotiator Narmada (Nayanthara): get the Agriculture Minister to pay off starving farmers’ extortionate loans, or more people will die.

“Jawan” careens from one twist to the next, fast enough that it almost doesn’t matter how familiar and ultimately staid its story and set pieces often are. A few plot twists are also easy enough to anticipate. Azad romances Narmada and charms her impressionable ten-year-old daughter Suji (Seeza Saroj Mehta). He denounces various government officials and combats their corruption with a handful of bloody, media-amplified demonstrations. Azad speaks for the common people but behaves erratically, performing a little soft-shuffle dance surrounded by terrified commuters. He proudly and laboriously explains that he’s actually a good guy fighting the real enemy: public servants who do not serve the republic.

There’s an involved and agreeably goofy subplot that ties Narmada and Azad’s story with the movie’s opening scene, set 30 years prior in an unnamed village that may or may not be Tibet (somewhere near “India’s border,” terrorized by Asian soldiers in white star-studded green caps). If you’ve seen Shah Rukh Khan movies before, you won’t be especially surprised at how these two subplots tie together, though you may be delighted anyway. It’s a major plot twist that predictably takes over the back half of the plot and re-orients Azad’s plot so that viewers know that this time, unlike all the other times, it’s personal.

This time, there’s a nefarious weapons dealer, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi), who is as malicious as he is violent. There’s also a surprise cameo from a big Bollywood star, whose presence isn’t really a spoiler if you pay attention during the opening credits. And be on the lookout for a duet dance number led by Khan and Deepika Padukone, who have great chemistry, possibly because they know that, by now, they don’t have to really compete for viewers’ affection. Oh, and a couple of the fight scenes are maximalist show-stoppers despite being over-edited and under-directed. Loud and rote, sure, but never boring.

The main reason “Jawan” doesn’t deliver more than what Khan has previously delivered is because its creators seemingly included every masala-style subplot they could think of. Still, “Jawan” is unlike Khan’s last two comeback trail stops because its creators are better at navigating its many hairpin twists and turns. Kudos to director Atlee, a former assistant director whose credits include the Rajinikanth vehicle “Enthiran” and its sequel “ 2.0 ,” and his creative team.

Most importantly, in “Jawan,” Khan looks more relaxed than in years past, toggling leisurely through his repertoire of tics and poses. He looks especially comfortable in undemanding musical numbers, and he still gives great Blue Steel looks every time he turns on a slow-mo heel to pout at viewers’ and/or co-stars. Shah Rukh Khan is still a star, baby, and “Jawan” uses him about as well as his fans might hope.

Khan even looks good delivering a corny but impassioned speech later in the movie. As Azad, Khan reminds us that he’s just like you and me, the apathetic public who, despite our best intentions, have not always exercised good judgment when voting for government officials. There’s a general election in India next year, and while the makers of “Jawan” could have otherwise taken bigger risks, their efforts are appreciated.

Now playing in theaters.

'Jawan' review: A blend of mass appeal and class with Shah Rukh Khan in top form

Swathi P Ajith

Shah Rukh Khan's second theatrical release of the year, 'Jawan', has finally graced the screens, and in a few words, it's a resounding triumph. Directed by Atlee, the film seamlessly blends mass appeal with class. King Khan unquestionably succeeds in keeping the audience riveted to their seats until the credits roll. 'Jawan' embodies all the quintessential elements of an Atlee movie, featuring power-packed action sequences and stellar performances from the entire cast.

The film's plot revolves around Azad (Shah Rukh Khan), a vigilante-police jailer who, alongside a group of women, strives to rectify the corrupt society. Nayanthara assumes the role of a police officer, while Vijay Sethupathi portrays the menacing grey antagonist in this engaging spectacle.

Shah Rukh Khan undeniably serves as the linchpin that keeps the film intact, even though it occasionally falters despite its potent star-studded ensemble and a cameo appearance by Deepika Padukone. What seems to be lacking in the movie is a certain emotional resonance, despite its earnest exploration of various societal issues.

Shah Rukh Khan's film 'Jawan' gets U/A certificate after these many cuts

Vijay Sethupathi undeniably commands a formidable presence in the film, providing the perfect antagonist to match Shah Rukh's power-packed performance.

While there are indeed moments that tug at the heartstrings, at times, it appears that the film's abundance of good intentions may have inadvertently led to some missteps. For instance, the chemistry between Shah Rukh and Nayanthara doesn't quite hit the mark. Their love story unfolds with such swiftness that it might raise some eyebrows, and Nayanthara's character, despite being a police officer, doesn't seem particularly curious about delving into her fiancé's background. Another perplexing element is the consistent use of full makeup on women portrayed as prisoners within the jail. While such details may be brushed aside in a mass entertainer, they do raise legitimate questions about realism.

The movie exudes a Thalapathy Vijay-style essence, but Shah Rukh Khan's presence elevates it into a pan-Indian spectacle. However, there are numerous scenes in the film that seem tailored more towards the Tamil audience rather than appealing to a broader pan-Indian viewership.

The fight sequences provide an enjoyable experience, especially the thrilling biking scenes featuring Shah Rukh. Supporting actors like Sanya Malhotra and Priyamani deliver commendable performances, and it's a delightful reunion to see Priyamani and Shah Rukh share the screen once again after Chennai Express.

While the film admirably addresses critical issues like farmer suicides, it occasionally overextends its reach, leading to a point where Shah Rukh's concluding monologue lacks the intended impact due to the stretching of emotional elements.

'Jawan' cleverly weaves in references from other iconic movies like 'The Lion King' and 'Bahubali', adding an element of nostalgia that certainly elicited thunderous applause from the audience.

While the movie isn't an outright no-brainer, it certainly has its fair share of such moments. It's unquestionably tailored for the theatrical experience, with action-packed sequences that demand the big screen, and nearly every frame graced by Shah Rukh's charisma.

It was a great cinema that I enjoyed watching fighting scenes that Vikram Rajput fought all the terrorist and soldiers wanted to guard them. As SRK fought inside a metro train departing at Subway Station and the bulb doesn't work inside the tunnel that Gaikwad wanted to check wire electricity and the min scene that people wanted to tell the news of Vikram Rathore. But soldiers went to hunt inside the jail and find that evil terrorists wanted to die by killing. The main scene is Shah Rukh Khan wanted to dress like a bald man. As there are bomb blasting around the police station. One fascinating scene is people who are getting handcuffed and shot by bullets from Sethupathi.

Jawan Review: Shah Rukh Khan Dazzles in this Cocktail of Guts and Masala

Jawan Review: Shah Rukh Khan Dazzles in this Cocktail of Guts and Masala

Director: Atlee

Writers: Atlee, S. Ramanagirivasan, Sumit Arora

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Priyamani, Deepika Padukone, Sanya Malhotra, Riddhi Dogra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, Lehar Khan

Duration: 169 minutes

Available in: Theatres

A mass movie is a vessel, but it’s an empty one without the liquid to hold. Masala is hot, but it’s only ground dust without the dish. The ‘hero-entry moment’ is a legacy, but it’s only a stranger striding in slow-mo if we don’t know who he is. Atlee’s Jawan – a film I’d have watched in back-to-back morning shows if I didn’t have to write this review – celebrates the identity of this stranger. He is an overflowing vessel, but he’s also the dish of the year. When he asks “Main kaun hu? (Who am I?),” it’s a question in the shape of a reminder. The reminder is not just trapped by the big screen. It’s everywhere – it’s in his name, his narrative, his fatherhood, the interviews he’s stopped doing, the loyalty of his fans, the cheekiness of ‘Ask SRK’ Twitter sessions, the venom of his trolls, the boycott hashtags, the stoic nationalism, and a decade-long comeback in the making. If Pathaan was the first line of that reminder, Jawan is the whole punchline. And what a punchline it is.

Jawan (“soldier”) is not just any social drama. It’s a drama based in a country so embattled that the only mantra left is: When in doubt, Shah Rukh Khan . The leaders have failed, the system is corrupt, and a superstar has decided to take matters into his own hands. This intervention is disguised as one of the most enjoyable, pulpy, ditzy and progressive entertainers in recent memory. It’s Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) with swag, Rang De Basanti (2006) with zero shame, and Ghayal (1990) on steroids. It’s anti-establishment rage with pro-people hope. It’s hard to write a single line of plot without spoiling the experience. So let’s just say that Khan in Jawan signifies the sort of happy-hour vigilantism that’s immensely satisfying to see. He’s a soldier and a jailer, a patriot and a saint. And he is fed up. Every time he appears, it’s a hero-entry moment – and there are at least ten of these. (I may or may not have hooted at the coolest pre-interval scene in ages; if you listen closely, you might almost hear Khan growl: Who’s your daddy now? ). Which is to say that things are so bleak today that Khan needs to be introduced – and remembered – multiple times. He needs to be there, even when he’s not. And he needs to keep arriving, by hook or by crook, as hero and antidote, as enforcer and protector.

Between Fact and Fiction

In other words, being fiction isn’t enough. In Jawan , the singularity of storytelling wears the plurality of life. For instance, the Robin Hood theme is timeless but also pointedly current. When a hijacking happens, the protagonist – who loves old Bollywood songs – pretends to be a baddie, and his first target is a burqa-clad passenger. Later, a woman is falsely charged and jailed for drug use; she takes the fall for government apathy. When a skirmish at the border goes wrong, soldiers become pawns in a political scam that leaves the army with faulty weapons. It’s all there: Farmer suicides, fumbling ministers, a shortage of oxygen cylinders, a billionaire who funds the government. It’s no surprise that electronic voting machines (EVMs) and an impending election play a key role in the premise, too. There’s a back-from-the-dead and memory-loss track, a nod to the fact that a (movie) soldier has had to rediscover his stature as a secular icon. There’s an all-female team of avengers – an ode to Khan’s unique image as both a feminist hero and beta-male lover – and an aspirational women’s prison that reframes the cage as a container of pent-up potential. All alleged flaws – a bandaged face, a bald head, middle age, pregnancy out of wedlock, macho cigar-smoking (which almost taunts the “cigarettes are injurious to health” disclaimer) – morph into superhero capes. When politicians are reduced to caricatures who transform at the drop of a hat, it’s not lazy writing. The rush suggests that the film perhaps has no time for figures who generally have no time for the people that vote them in.

I’m usually not a fan of film-makers being in awe of the stars they cast. But Atlee’s blinding reverence for Shah Rukh Khan and his Daddy era (as well as Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi ) works wonders for the film. The lovesick treatment (Level: Hrithik Roshan in War ) ensures that when the director fast-forwards through the romance, flashbacks, climax and reaction shots in a hurry, our excitement is rooted in the anticipation of the next punchy scene. And the next, and the next. It stops mattering that the connective tissue is a formality, or that tears are used as narrative shortcuts. Everything else is a footnote, a filler in service of bold messaging, at a time when even silence is viewed through the lens of dissent.

More is Better

The directness of this courage (especially a monologue towards the end) is moving, because it reveals the cards of a film that isn’t afraid to request its viewers to reflect rather than tell them to think. Its activism is almost chivalrous, despite the loud tone. It doesn’t hesitate to break the fourth wall and use its commercial packaging – replete with the contradictions of a weak soundtrack but a terrific score, wanton violence and pan-Indian emotions – to reason with the very concept of democracy. Add to this the colour – like a delightfully unhinged villain, a cheetah chilling at a high-scale meeting featuring a Bane-styled billionaire, a vertically challenged henchman pulling his gigantic colleague as they record a video – and Jawan becomes an irresistible cocktail of guts and mainstream glory.

Most of all, the subtext is there for everyone to savour. The thrill of watching a Shah Rukh Khan film has long been defined by his uncanny ability to make it about himself. Over the years, he’s renovated the idea of celebrity narcissism, turning it into meta-entertainment at the movies. Khan has often let his life – or at least popular perception of his life – inform the spirit of his roles. Our enjoyment is derived from the illusion that we’re watching him as much as the men he plays. Earlier, this auto-fiction was limited to excavations of his own superstar duality ( Duplicate, Om Shanti Om, Fan, Ra.One, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi ). But it’s only as an action hero that this self-reverence has gone from entertainment to art. The genre physicalises (and mythologises) Khan’s journey, pitting him against real-world demons instead of imaginary people. While it’s natural to wonder why he took so long to do all-out action cinema, the timing is perfect – his underdog swag can now afford to be personal and political at once. It can be aggressive and kind at once.

As a result, his heroes aren’t fighting against, they’re fighting for. The “bete ko haath lagane se pehle baap se baat kar (before threatening the son, deal with the father)” threat in Jawan brings the house down for a reason. The flashback of his character stars a child who resembles a young Aryan Khan in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), for a reason. A Lion King reference (Khan and his son voiced Mufasa and Simba in the Hindi version of the 2019 live-action remake) hits home, for a reason. None of it is grandstanding or self-homage anymore. Within the defiant parameters of action cinema, it acquires the grammar of self-expression. The fight is literal; the scale is fitting. It becomes more . And Jawan is that more. It understands that cinematic truth isn’t about logic but pop-cultural authenticity. It gets that mass is weightless without a sense of matter. And it proves that masala film-making isn’t about giving the audience what they want; it’s about asking them what they need.

Nicole Kidman Is ‘Babygirl’ in First Images From A24's Steamy New Drama

We finally know the title of the new 'jurassic world' movie, 'jurassic world 4' roars to life with first images, the big picture.

  • Shah Rukh Khan's latest film Jawan is dominating the global box office, nearing an astonishing $110 million in just two weeks.
  • Jawan impresses audiences globally with its unapologetically political storyline, tackling deep-rooted iniquities in society.
  • The film's star power, including Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara, adds weight to its already powerful message.

Shah Rukh Khan remains living proof that new heights can always be reached even after three decades of record-shattering success. The Bollywood icon, adoringly hailed King Khan by his legion of supporters at home and across the globe, undoubtedly caused a stir when he decided to archive his legacy of romance and pursue pastures new in the form of insatiable action epics. During its second week in theaters - which have been packed to the brim with cheering fans in anticipation - Jawan has devoured the global box office nearing an astonishing $110 million.

After days of continuously elevated success, SRK's production house Red Chilies Entertainment unveiled fresh evidence of the legendary actor's box office rule in an Instagram post. As part of a stunning still that captures SRK in black and white puffing on a cigar was an impressive unveiling of the film's latest worldwide gross - ₹907.54. This converts to around $109.2 million putting the movie well on track to slaughter past $110 million. Jawan is proving to be on an unstoppable path after just crossing $100 million over the weekend. As a point of comparison, SRK's earlier Mission Impossible -style offering rounded out its global cume with $130 million, which means Jawan should devour this figure with ease by the end of its run.

Why Has 'Jawan' Impressed Audiences Globally?

Jawan has impressed both in India and internationally and its unapologetically political nature is likely to go some way towards its acclaim. The film chronicles the story of Azad (SRK), a soldier seemingly orphaned at a young age with an eye on keeping his promise to his mother that sees him tackle the deep-rooted iniquities within society. On his anti-hero-style warpath, he is reunited with his father Vikram (also SRK) - who he was made to believe was dead. The pair team up to take down a notorious arms dealer ( Vijay Sethupathi ), who is soaked in corruption, and continues to expand happily at the expense of innocent civilians. Laced between its fingers, Jawan holds both the people and politicians to account, the former for not questioning who they vote into power and the latter for enabling injustices to persist at the expense of - in many cases - countless human lives. As the world is collectively confronted by countless devastation, Jawan unsurprinsgly is able to strike the right chords. The film is brought to life through SRK's unexpected dual role and prolific director Atlee 's vision with stunning cinematography and delectable action sequences that don't shy away from the gore of combat.

Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan

As well as its powerful message, Jawan finds added weight in its star power with antagonist Sethupathi and police officer Nayanthara , both of whom boast successful careers in South Indian cinema. Bollywood favorite Deepika Padukone also makes a lengthy appearance as the wife of Azad's father Vikram.

You can watch Jawan in theaters now.

Jawan movie review: Shah Rukh Khan is the hero of Bharat that is India in this pop-masala banger Jawan movie review: After a kinetic and zingy first hour, Shah Rukh Khan's film slumps in bits, but as a whole, the movie is an unabashed massy entertainer with strong political messaging, making it a film which is very much of the moment.

Glossy to look at and epic in scope, Jawan is a far more accomplished comic book-inspired movie than Ra.One ever was.
