Personally, I assess my temperament as a cross between being an extrovert and introvert. Sometimes I am active, communicative, and feel like the center of any company; another day, I am self-absorbed, thoughtful, and unwilling to talk to people. Unfortunately, when I suddenly find myself in a large company of new people, I usually act in the second way. This happened on my first day at work; even more, I behaved like that for the first three months of my employment. I was hired by a news agency right after my graduation; working in media was my dream, and I gladly accepted the offer from the agency’s HR manager, though the salary was not satisfactory.

My new workplace was an open office for about 50 journalists, each hunting for new material, interviewing public persons via phones, making business calls, and rushing in all directions. My chief editor briefly explained my tasks to me for the first day and vanished in the surrounding chaos. I was left alone with my computer and a list of newsmakers to work with. The chief editor did not even provide me with phone numbers of people whom I needed to call to verify certain information before publishing it on a website. Besides, everybody around me seemed to be too busy to be willing to help a newcomer like me. To put it short, all I felt in the first couple of hours of my employment was anxiety.

In my opinion (and based on my personal experience), the first day at a new job is difficult for many individuals due to several reasons. The initial reason for feeling unease is a natural embarrassment that is accompanied with being in a completely new surrounding. Each office, each company is a kind of an ecosystem with its own micro-climate, communication and survival laws, already formed groups and relationships. A new person usually is unfamiliar with the local customs of the new company he or she starts to work at, so the first period of time he or she has to spend as aliens. Next, new work—especially if it is one’s first workplace—often implies that the newcomer is being tested and watched with special attention; this adds responsibilities and stress. Finally, the newcomer if often extremely critical of themselves because of being alert of even the smallest flaws or mistakes; they have to learn vast volumes of new information and obtain numerous skills.

The first day at work is often similar to initiation tests in distant, primeval tribes. A person is thrown into a collective of completely new and unfamiliar people, who already have their own working micro-climate established; the newcomer is almost inevitably seen as an alien in it. A new workplace also means increased responsibilities and expectations from the fresh employee, both from the employer and from the newcomer themselves. Also, on the first day of a new job, people seem to realize the amounts of new knowledge and skills they need to master, and this may be rather discouraging for them. All this makes the first day at a new job a serious and highly stressful test.

I will share the day when I was on a busy day in sudden, I faced a difficult situation which never I forget about it.

After my graduation from Telecommunication engineering, I’ve applied for the job, and I got the job which was the first job in my life. The first day at the job I went to the office the team with manager had a quick meeting that meeting was first and worst meeting I had. They were investigating the problem which their system has faced since last week.

I keep silent and just listening to them and watching the diagram and the code of the errors which they got from the system. The team was talking to the manager and discussing regarding the issue as well as looking to find out the root of the problem. After a while, in sudden, the manager asked me about my opinion regarding the issue.

Once he looked at me and asked, I got heart palpitation with redness face, I couldnt talk or share my point of view about the issue, at that moment one guy in the team began speaking to the manager.

Later in the server room the guy came to me and introduced himself with a handshake and said: “this is your first day no need to be nervous, only look at us how we are trying to fix the issue.” the way he talked to me made me feel comfortable and get a sense of friendly environment.

At the end of that day, I said to the team goodbye and went home. My dad was home when arrived; he asked me how was your first day at the first job at the time I remembered the moment when the manager asked me regarding the issue, the same feeling came back to me with annoying feeling, my dad told me I could see your day wasn’t good enough. I said to dad about the situation then he loudly laughed at me and I surprised for his reaction.

Later dad said “Son you just finished your degree this is doesn’t mean you are an engineer now. You are very new graduation from the university don’t think you know everything in your field and take it easy. You have a long life and should get experience to become an engineer.” then I realized that what he means, then I felt more comfortable and understand that I have to get experience to reach a good level in my field.

In conclusion, the first job is always something different from the study, and I have faced trouble in my first job because of lack of experience however I get help from the one of the team. Besides, I’ve learned a good lesson from my dad which changed my thinking about work. Therefore, I will think positively in all situation during work even I don’t know something, but I can learn through experience.

Tips for your first day of work

No matter your role, there are 10 universal tips you can use to have a successful first day of work. It’s normal to have jitters when trying something new, but if you apply the tips below, you’ll start your new position feeling confident and comfortable. 

1. Prepare to learn a lot

Your company may keep it simple on day one because they don’t want to bombard you with too much information all at once. While you may not receive a list of long-term goals right away, you should still prepare to be a sponge and absorb as much knowledge as you can. Some things you may learn on your first day of work include:

Tools, logins, and passwords

Team member names and roles

If you aren’t prepared to take in a lot of information on your first day of work, you may have trouble grasping material as the week progresses. It’s easier to retain new concepts once you have the foundation mastered.

Tip: Your first day of work may feel overwhelming, so practice releasing control and letting go of your expectations before you head into the day. That way, you can process new information with an open mind. Try to relax by doing breathing exercises, meditation, or listening to calm music the night before your first day. Tip: You may not get a chance to ask all of these questions on your first day, and that's okay. By writing them down and keeping a list, you can get to them when you have dedicated one-on-one time with your manager or mentor. As you onboard, you’ll inevitably have new questions, which you can add to your ongoing list.

3. Get plenty of sleep

You’ve probably heard this tip many times before, but it’s worth repeating. If you don’t get enough sleep before your first day of work, you’ll have trouble focusing, grasping information, and presenting the best version of yourself. Getting between seven and eight hours of sleep per night is the sweet spot. Anything below that can significantly reduce productivity.

A study from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine shows that those who reported getting five to six hours of sleep experienced 19 percent more productivity loss. Additionally, those who got less than five hours of sleep experienced 29 percent more productivity loss.

Tip: To increase your sleep quality before your first day of work, try adjusting your sleep schedule one week in advance. You can also try exercising the day before work so you’re sufficiently tired when bedtime comes. Limiting tech before you hit the sheets can also increase sleep quality. 

4. Study company tools

Your team members will appreciate it when you enter the workspace prepared. Every company uses specific tools and programs to operate, and you’ll have a better chance of success if you familiarize yourself with these tools early on. 

While some tools may require a paid subscription, many of them offer free trials which will give you an introductory look at what you might experience when using them in the workplace. You may want to study up on tools for:

Within the current business and economics sector, there are certain challenges and norms one might face concerning professional conduct. This implies the generally accepted policies that apply to all beginners and professionals in the business field. As for the first day at a new job, it is essential to prove oneself as a prospective candidate and future leader by demonstrating the available skills and readiness to obtain the new ones. With that said, by analyzing professional, ethical issues, one might get a trustworthy reputation, as well as beneficial opportunities to build a successful career path.

From a professional point of view, physical appearance is regulated by the code of professional ethics that should be followed strictly. Like the visual organizational culture, the dress code “links all employees of the same team” (Cenere et al. 43). The professional dress code consists of business casual and formal business attire, which depends on the format of the meeting and the formality level of the overall work process. Therefore, the appropriate professional business attire, as the most formal one, would imply conservative suits in predominantly dark tones. According to Perkins (3), female workers are also required to wear trouser pants for such formal business cases. Besides, it is also possible to include blazers, skirts, and slacks, together with low-heeled dress shoes.

Business casual wear, on the other hand, is less formal as it is the most common type of clothing used in the professional environment for everyday work. The casual business look might be the most appropriate for the first day at work as it gives more freedom in the clothing choice but still creates a conservative professional look.

This type of business wear implies comfort along with the presentable look and includes everyday wardrobe, such as shirts, pants, skirts, shoes, and heels. However, this freedom is limited by the appropriate length of the skirt and heels and discreet light and dark colors, excluding any inappropriate design and prints. Furthermore, sweatpants, T-shirts, and jeans are not allowed for the job in the business and economics sector. The visual examples are presented in the pictures below (Example 1 and Example 2).

Concerning body art policies, such as tattoos and piercings, most employment policies usually prohibit or limit different types of body art (Perkins 4). As part of the solution, long sleeves and long pants are required in order to cover the exposing tattoos. Perkins states that the United States transformed into a “culture of body modification,” including tattoos and piercings, which enhanced the appearance-based discrimination claims (5). Thus, the body artwork policies were implemented, as such appearance is inappropriate and might indicate specific racial, ethnic, or religious aspects. The minor questions and possible problems should be addressed to the colleagues, while the advice from the managers and administrators, or even the company’s director, might be asked, particularly in urgent cases and situations of risk.

When becoming a part of the new personnel, it is crucial to gain trust and credibility amongst other workers as the key to effective workplace relationships. Trust requires the “complement, credible, and empathic” qualities of the managers, team leaders, and staff (Dwyer and Hopwood 533). This, in turn, leads to the beneficial relevance of building the network within a new team and become a good team player. This can be achieved by regular communication and engagement, hardworking temper, managing in challenging cases, displaying leadership skills, and even nurturing others’ development (Cenere et al. 13).

Furthermore, there is a driving force that shapes a career path at the beginning of a new job, which is setting the right goals. The organization typically unites its workers to achieve a common goal. Dwyer and Hopwood present a five-step path to goal achievement, which involves the following steps:

  • having a clear goal, communicating and sharing it with others;
  • writing it down as a goal statement;
  • breaking the task into steps or objectives;
  • identifying the resources needed;
  • implementing the actions to achieve the outcomes (142).

Such a strategy might give great results in both the team engagement process as well as the personal, professional development. Hence, one of the successful outcomes of the well-controlled personal image, competence, and career would be the development of a personal brand by implementing the received experience of great value. By following the ethical conduct that corresponds to the professional sector, it is possible to reach noticeable results and leadership positions throughout one’s career.

My First Day at Work

Heart beating, pulse racing, nerves ticking I entered the threshold of what would be my first day at work, on passing out from a premium management institute at Patna.

Patna, in those days, about a decade and a half back was a still a small fledgling town on the throes of experiencing the fruits of globalization. The pall of fear and uncertainty looming over it on account of the crime-political nexus made the big corporates wary of setting up their base in this city. L.G, which provided me the first breakthrough, was a pioneer, in terms of being the MNC which dared to venture into this hinterland.

Fresh out of college, I was buoyant with my dreams and aspirations of making it big as I was about to start a new innings. The opportunity that my first job provided held immense significance to someone from my kind of tight financial background, brought up as I was by a mother who single-handedly managed to rear up her two children and provide them with promising education at immense personal cost.

The day held a lot of promise as I realised I was going to be the first woman employee in the company’s payroll, since its inception two years back. In this all – male domain, I was the singular woman in my entire tenure of work period. Holding fort my opinions, my voice, my outlook was hence going to test a lotof my fortitude, resilience and perseverance in the quest to mark my presence. From the first day onwards, I had to set the record straight that my being a novice in this corporate jungle noway undermined my potential, my talent and my skills to mark a substantial contribution in this one person, that too a woman, led H.R department. My clear perception, sound knowledge of H.R norms and systems made some of the insecure, arrogant, weight throwing members of the Sales and Marketing team, play on the back foot and act hostile.

This did not however daunt me to the extent that there was no provision for a separate washroom for the female employees since they had never envisaged a woman to join and retain her position in this company, for very long. Unwaveringly, however I made sure this was but a temporary setback as I went ahead to make friends with some very genial counterparts in the opposite door branch office of a private sector bank whose generosity opened the doors to their fully equipped wash cubicle , for the entire length of time , I worked over there.

The hostility of few was however offset by the magnanimity and open heartedness of the men in the Customer Service department, who welcomed my presence with open arms, made me feel like family and offered me all the support and know-how they could muster, in a bid to help me settle .

Truly said, when a woman sets out to conquer the demons, there is no dearth of challenges waiting to rein her in. The days ahead were going to be demanding, challenging and extremely daunting and the first day in the office had just offered a sneak preview to it.

On the first working day, it is vital for a new employee to look not only formally correct but also to fit the company’s dress code in which they are going to work. Therefore, it would be helpful to know in advance how the employees of the status corresponding to the employee dress not to look different from their background. One needs to attract attention with a positive attitude and the right approach, but not with bright or overly luxurious clothes.

One should not hesitate to ask colleagues questions on the first day of work. It is important to remember that each of your colleagues has already been in your place at some point, so they will easily enter your position. Questions should be asked about everything that raises the slightest doubt. This is necessary to avoid liability in the event of a mistake made by ignorance. Perhaps, to integrate into the team, the newcomer will be assigned a curator, and all questions can be addressed to them. In case a newcomer lacks experience in a previous job, it would be helpful to ask a senior employee to explain the operation principle step by step (Cain, 2018). From the outside, the vulnerable sides of the new employee will be more noticeable, and it is easier to note and fix them immediately for a more experienced employee. It makes sense to contact the employee who was the last newcomer before that, as they better remember the nuances and difficulties in this job.

There are many ways to get to know one’s colleagues and find a friendly approach to one’s relationship with them. First of all, one needs to be always friendly and smiling since a smile automatically removes the possibility of tension between unfamiliar interlocutors (Bissett, 2018). Diligence and responsiveness, and the initiative to stay in the hours after work, all demonstrate an employee who is ready to work in a team. Going to a joint lunch is a great way to get to know the colleagues better, to get to know them as friends and not just workmates.

A friendly and inquisitive approach is fundamental to making a good first impression at work. The employee’s desire to learn new things and improve their skills should be demonstrated to everyone around them. However, one should not forget that excessive initiative and desire to show their exceptional talents can be perceived as selfishness by both employees and superiors. You should not bother your superiors by regularly asking them to evaluate their work. This will be misinterpreted by the bosses as a desire to outshine other employees with their persona and quarrel with future colleagues. A worker who wants to stand out from the team, and not join it, in essence, is not a necessary and useful employee.

Thus, first of all, a competently built attitude to one’s work and employees should become the basis for a successful merger with the team. The employee should demonstrate his direct interest and desire to help in every possible way but should not be unnecessarily annoying or noticed by his superiors. A newcomer should perceive their colleagues as friends but prioritize work ethic above friendship. Awareness of one’s position, optimism, and a desire to function most practically should provide a new employee with successful interaction with employees and bosses.
