Exploring The Beauty Of Urdu Writing: #1 Easy Guide

Growing up in New Delhi, I had always been fascinated by the remnants of Mughal architecture dotting the city skyline. But it was the Urdu writing – Urdu tehreer (اردو تحریر) carved on those centuries-old walls and minarets that would catch my attention every time.

Now, it might not be a ‘romance’ language like French, Italian, or Spanish, but many in north India and Pakistan consider Urdu a language of romance. Rekhta (ریختہ), one of its earlier names, is a language of culture – of Adab (ادَب – respectfulness) and Tahzeeb (تَہْذِیب – mannerism). It is the language of mystical Sufism, divine love, and poetry. It is the language of Sukhan (سخن) – speech, language, and Urdu words .

Let’s discover what makes Urdu a beautiful language to learn .

What Are The Features Of Urdu Writing

#1 the urdu script.

As we noted earlier, it uses the Nastaʻliq script and is typically written from right to left. After the Mughal conquest, Nastaʻliq became the preferred writing style for Urdu. The appearance of letters in cursive depends on their context and positions: Isolated form, initial position (starting from left), medial form (both sides), and final position (joined on the right).

#2 The Urdu Alphabet

There are 39 or 40 Urdu letters without any distinct letter case. Now, the ambiguity regarding the number of Urdu alphabet present in this script is quite clear. That’s because it is an ‘abjad’ script that evolved from the Persian script. 

This implies that the Urdu script only identifies consonants and long vowels. The pronunciation of short vowels is left to the reader’s inference. The first letter of the script is  ا  (pronounced:  Alif ), and the second letter is  ب  (pronounced:  Bē ).

#3 Sound System

There are 41 consonant sounds and 11 vowel sounds in this language. It is interesting to note that it has borrowed numerous phonemes (smallest unit of speech) from Perso-Arabic and Indo-Aryan languages. It has adopted 14 Indic sounds with aspirated consonants, retroflex consonants, and additional letters in the form of aspirated and unaspirated sounds.

#4 Word Order

The Urdu sentence structure follows the SOV pattern: Subject + Object + Verb. For instance, one can write the translation of “I am eating food” as میں کھانا کھا رہا ہوں ( Main khaana kha rahaa hoon ). Further, the verbs and adjectives agree with the subject (gender and plurality of nouns).

So, a male would say: میں کھانا کھا رہا ہوں ( Main khaana kha rahaa hoon ) whereas a female would say میں کھانا کھا رہی ہوں ( Main khaana kha rahi hoon ).

#5 Vocabulary

There’s no denying that this Asian language is unique when it comes to the terminologies it uses. In the case of the Urdu language, most of the terms are known to be greatly influenced by Persian, Turkish, and Arabic words that are not commonly found in other languages (as shown in the tables below). So, the next time you’re trying to connect with someone in Urdu, you might want to brush up on these useful words and phrases beforehand.

Fascinating Features Of The Urdu Language

Urdu is the native language of many Indians and Pakistanis, with a vast diaspora settled in the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and several Gulf countries. Though born in Delhi of yore, this language enjoys the status of being the official language of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and one of the 22 official languages of the Republic of India. It is also the official state language of several Indian states.

Its Origins

This language was born from the regional Apabhramsha (the literary language of northwestern India’s final phase of the Middle Indo-Aryan languages) in the 12th century. This new language came into existence in the region of present-day Delhi as an amalgamation of the Hindu and Muslim cultures. Urdu was derived from the Turkish word ‘ordu,’ meaning army.

Throughout the centuries, it came to be known by various names – Hindvi, Gujari, Dakkhani, Zaban-e-Hind, Hindi, Zaban-e-Delhi, and so on . In the late 17th and 18th centuries, it was called Hindustani and Zaban-e-Urdu (the language of the army), respectively.

Its Similarities With Hindi

Hindi and Urdu are considered sister languages . One can argue that on many parameters, they are almost identical. For instance, they sound intelligent to each other’s native speakers. At the conversational level, the spoken version of both these languages sounds the same as they both evolved from the same source – Khari Boli – the dialect of the Delhi region during the Delhi Sultanate’s reign.

The primary difference lies in their written forms. While Hindi is written in the Devanagari script from left to right, Urdu uses a modified form of Perso-Arabic script known as Nastaliq (nastaʿlīq – نستعلیق ) and is written from right to left.

Moreover, the majority of the Hindi lexicon is borrowed from Sanskrit and Prakrit, while Persian, Arabic, and Turkish heavily influence the latter.

آج کا لکھنے والا غالب اور میر نہیں بن سکتا ۔ وہ شاعرانہ عظمت اور مقبولیت اس کا مقدر نہیں ہے۔ اس لئے کہ وہ ایک بہرے ،گونگے، اندھے معاشرے میں پیدا ہوا ہے۔

کہتے ہیں سگریٹ کے دوسرے سرے پر جو راکھ ہوتی ہے در اصل وہ پینے والے کی ہوتی ہے۔

جو چیز مسرت بخش نہیں ہو سکتی وہ حسین نہیں ہو سکتی۔

جو معاشرہ اپنے آپ کو جاننا نہیں چاہتا وہ ادیب کو کیسے جانے گا۔ جنہیں اپنے ضمیر کی آواز سنائی نہیں دیتی انہیں ادیب کی آواز بھی سنائی نہیں دے سکتی۔

ادب کی بہترین تعریف تنقید حیات ہے۔ ادب کو ہماری زندگی پر تبصرہ کرنا چاہیے۔

سوز و گداز میں جب پختگی آجاتی ہے تو غم، غم نہیں رہتا بلکہ ایک روحانی سنجیدگی میں بدل جاتا ہے۔

ہمیں حسن کا معیار تبدیل کرنا ہوگا۔ ابھی تک اس کا معیار امیرانہ اور عیش پرورانہ تھا۔

در اصل شادی ایک لفظ نہیں پورا فقرہ ہے۔

زندگی کے خارجی مسائل کا حل شاعری نہیں لیکن وہ داخلی مسائل کا حل ضرور ہے۔

لفظوں کی جنگ میں فتح کسی بھی فریق کی ہو شہید صرف سچائی ہوتی ہے۔

تنہائی کا احساس اگر بیماری نہ بن جائے تو اسی طرح عارضی ہے جیسے موت کا خوف۔

ادب انقلاب نہیں لاتا بلکہ انقلاب کے لیے ذہن کو بیدار کرتا ہے۔

غزل ہماری ساری شاعری نہیں ہے، مگر ہماری شاعری کا عطر ضرور ہے۔

تاج محل اسی باورچی کے زمانے میں تیار ہوسکتا تھا، جو ایک چنے سے ساٹھ کھانے تیار کر سکتا تھا۔

غم کا بھی ایک طربیہ پہلو ہوتا ہے اور نشاط کا بھی ایک المیہ پہلو ہوتا ہے۔

افسانے کا میں تصور ہی یوں کرتا ہوں جیسے وہ پھلواری ہے جو زمین سے اگتی ہے۔

قدیمی سماج میں افسانہ ہوتا تھا، افسانہ نگار نہیں ہوتے تھے۔

ہر متروک لفظ ایک گمشدہ شہر ہے اور ہر متروک اسلوبِ بیان ایک چھوڑا ہوا علاقہ۔

فسادات کے متعلق جتنا بھی لکھا گیا ہے اس میں اگر کوئی چیز انسانی دستاویز کہلانے کی مستحق ہے تو منٹو کے افسانے ہیں۔

قوم اور قومی زندگی مٹ رہی ہے اور ہم ہیں کہ ہندی ہندی اور اردو اردو کیے جارہےہیں۔

فن کی وجہ سے فنکار عزیز اور محترم ہونا چاہیے۔ فنکار کی وجہ سے فن نہیں۔

اردو شاعری کا پس منظر پوری زندگی ہے۔

ہم کتنے اور کس قسم کے الفاظ پر قابو حاصل کر سکتے ہیں، اس کا انحصار اس بات پر ہے کہ ہمیں زندگی سے ربط کتنا ہے۔

سرمایہ دار کا گناہ اسی طرح خوبصورت ہوتا ہے جیسے اس کی کوٹھی کا مین گیٹ خوبصورت ہوتا ہے۔

اگر اطاعت پر ضبط نفس کا احتساب جاری نہ رہے تو خودی کا متلاشی خطرناک راستوں پر جا سکتا ہے۔

ادب میں نقطۂ نظر کا مسئلہ میرے لیے دین کی سی حیثیت رکھتا ہے۔

ہندوستان 15 اگست 1947ء کو آزاد ہوا تھا۔ انگریزوں۔ نے ہندوستان کو لگ بھگ 200 سال تک غلام بنائے رکھا پہلے ہندوستانی آپس میں بٹے ہوئے تھے۔یہاں کے راجے مہاراجے ایک دوسرے کے خلاف تھے۔ وہ آپس میں جھگڑتے رہتے تھے بہت سے راجے عوام پر بھی ظلم کرتے تھے اس لئے عوام بھی بادشاہوں کے خلاف تھے۔

انگریزوں نے ہندوستانیوں کی آپسی پھوٹ کا فائدہ اٹھایا اور آہستہ آہستہ سارے ہندوستان پر قبضہ کرلیا۔ وہ ہندوستان میں تجارت کی غرض سے آئے تھے مگر یہاں اپنی حکومت قائم کرلی۔

جب انگریزوں نے دیکھا کہ اب ہندوستان پر وہ پوری طرح قابض ہوگئے ہیں تو انہوں نے یہاں لوٹ کھسوٹ شروع کردی۔ یہاں کے اعلی کاریگروں کو ختم کرکے رکھ دیا۔ وہ ہندوستان سے خام مال انگلینڈ لے جاتے تھے اور پھر وہاں کے کارخانوں میں تیار کرکے بہت مہنگے داموں ہندوستانیوں کے ہاتھ فروخت کرتے تھے۔بہت سا روپیہ وہ اپنی تنہا کی شکل میں لے لیتے تھے اس طرح انگریزوں نے ہندوستان کو دونوں ہاتھوں سے لوٹنا شروع کر دیا تھا اور اس کے ساتھ ہی وہ ہندوستانیوں پر ظلم بھی کرنے لگے تھے۔ اس طرح ہندوستانیوں کے دل میں اپنا دیش آزاد کرنے کا خیال پیدا ہوا۔

ہندوستانیوں نے اپنی آزادی کی پہلی جنگ 1857ء میں لڑی جسے انگریزوں نے غدر کا نام دیا۔چند ایک وجوہات کی وجہ سے ہماری یہ جنگ کامیاب نہ ہوئی اور فتح یاب ہونے کے بعد انگریزوں نے پہلے سے بھی زیادہ ظلم کرنے شروع کر دیے۔

تیس چالیس سال خاموش رہنے کے بعد ہندوستانیوں نے آزادی کے لئے دوبارہ جدوجہد شروع کردی۔ پچھلی صدی کے آخر میں انڈین نیشنل کانگریس کی بنیاد رکھی گئی بعد میں مہاتما گاندھی بھی اس تحریک میں شامل ہوگئے۔مہاتما گاندھی نے جدوجہد کو ایک نیا رنگ دیا۔ آپ نے عدم تشدد کا راستہ اختیار کیا۔ مہاتما گاندھی کی شخصیت سے متاثر ہو کر علی برادران، پنڈت موتی لال نہرو، حکیم احمد خان، ڈاکٹر انصاری، پنڈتجواہرلالنہرو، شیخ عبداللہ، جے پرکاش نارائن، ماسٹر تارا سنگھ، ڈاکٹر راجندر پرساد، ڈاکٹر ذاکر حسین وغیرہ بڑے بڑے لوگوں نے آپ کا ساتھ دینے کا اعلان کر دیا۔ ان سب لوگوں کی خدمت اور قربانیوں کی بدولت انگریز سرکار ہندوستان کو آزاد کرنے کے لئے مجبور ہوگئ اور آخر 15 اگست 1947ء کو انگریزوں نے ہندوستان تقسیم کرکے اپنا بوریا بستر باندھ لیا اور یہاں سے چلے گئے۔ اس طرح 15 اگست 1947ء کو ہندوستان آزاد ہو گیا۔

اس آزادی کی خاطر ہندوستانیوں نے کافی قربانیاں دی تھیں۔ کشمیر میں کشمیر کے محبوب لیڈر شیخ عبداللہ کو یہاں کے حکمران نے قید کیا گیا تھا اور انگریزوں کو خوش کرنے کے لئے کشمیر کے حاکموں نے شیخ عبداللہ ،کانگرنس لیڈروں اور نیشنل کانفرنس کے ورکروں پر سخت ظلم کیے انھیں جیلوں میں ٹھونسا گیا، لاٹھیاں برسائی گئیں،جائیدادوں پر قبضہ کیا گیا۔

پنجاب میں سردار بھگت سنگھ اور اس کے ساتھیوں کو پھانسی پر چڑھا دیا گیا۔ جلیان والا باغ میں نہتے پنجابیوں پر گولیاں چلا کر ہزاروں لوگوں کو شہید کر دیا گیا۔ بہت سے اکالی بھائیوں کو جیلوں میں بند کر دیا گیا اور گولی لاٹھی کا خوب استعمال ہوا۔یوپی میں منگل پانڈے اور اس کے ساتھیوں کو تنگ کیا گیا۔ بنگال میں سبھاش چندر بوش وغیرہ کو قید کر لیا گیا اور دیش بھگتوں کو خوب تنگ کیا گیا۔ وہ کونسا ظلم تھا جو ان دیش بھگتوں پر نہیں ہوا تھا۔یہی حال باقی صوبوں کا بھی تھا سارے ہندوستان میں ظلم کی لہریں چلتی رہی تھیں۔ پہلے تو ہندوستانی انگریزوں کے تحت آزادی چاہتے تھے مگر ان کے ظلم دیکھ کر لاہور کے کانگریسی اجلاس میں پنڈت جواہر لال نہرو نے مکمل آزادی کا نعرہ دیا۔ اگرچہ انگریزوں نے ہندوستانیوں میں پھوٹ ڈال کر راج کرنے کی کافی کوشش کی مگر اب قوم بیدار ہوچکی تھی۔ اگرچہ انگریز یہاں فرقہ پرستی پیدا کر چکے تھے اس کے باوجود ہندوستان کے ہندو اور مسلمان وغیرہ سب یہی چاہتے تھے کہ انگریز ہندوستان چھوڑ جائیں۔ دوسری جنگ عظیم کے بعد انگریزوں کی اپنی حالت بھی دگرگوں ہوگئی تھی۔ دنیا کے حالات بدل گئے تھے اس لیے مجبور ہو کر انگریزوں نے ہندوستان کو آزاد کر دیا۔

اب ہر سال 15 اگست کا دن بڑی دھوم دھام کے ساتھ منایا جاتا ہے اس دن سارے ہندوستان میں آزادی کی چھٹی ہوتی ہے۔ سکولوں اور کالجوں میں اسپیشل پروگرام ہوتے ہیں۔ سرکاری طور پر بھی جگہ جگہ پریڈ کی جاتی ہے۔سرکاری عمارتوں اور دیگر مقامات پر قومی جھنڈے لہرائے جاتے ہیں۔ اس روز کوئی بھی ادارہ قومی جھنڈا لہرا کر اسےسلامی دی سکتا ہے۔ رات کے وقت لوگ روشنی کرتے ہیں۔ بچوں میں مٹھائیاں بانٹی جاتی ہیں۔سرکار کی طرف سے ہر ضلع ہیڈکوارٹر پر خاص پروگرام ہوتا ہے۔ہندوستان کا راشٹرپتی اس روز قوم کو خاص پیغام دیتا ہے۔ 15 اگست کو ہندوستانی بڑی دھوم دھام کے ساتھ مناتے ہیں اور اسے ہمارا قومی میلہ قرار دیا گیا ہے۔ جہاں جہاں ہندوستان کے سفارتخانے ہیں وہاں بھی یہ دن بڑی دھوم دھام سے منایا جاتا ہے۔

اگرچہ ہم نے آزادی حاصل کر لی ہے مگر اسے مکمل آزادی تب ہی کہا جا سکتا ہے جب ہم پورے ہندوستان اور سماج کو اس راستہ پر لے کر چلیں جس راستہ پر دوسرے آزاد دیش چلتے ہیں۔ انگریزوں نے ہندوستان میں بہت سی برائیوں کو جنم دیا تھا جب تک یہ برائیاں قائم ہیں ہم اپنے آپ کو مکمل طور پر آزاد نہیں کہہ سکتے۔ انگریزوں کے ساتھ ساتھ جب تک یہ برائیاں بھی یہاں سے دفع نہیں ہو جاتیں تب تک ہم اپنے آپ کو کیسے آزاد کہہ سکتے ہیں۔ اس لئے ہمارا فرض ہے کہ ہم سب ملکر اپنے دیش کی برائیوں کو دور کریں۔

ہندوستان میں انگریزوں نے پھوٹ ڈالو اور راج کرو کی پالیسی اپنائی تھی۔ ہمیں آزاد ہوئے کافی سال گزر گئے ہیں مگر یہ بات ہمارے لئے باعث شرم ہے کہ ابھی تک ہم فرقہ پرستی سے اپنے آپ کو علیحدہ نہیں کر سکے۔ انسان کو انسان سے پیار کرنا چاہیے، سب انسان برابر ہیں مگر افسوس ہے کہ ہندوستان میں کہیں ہندو مسلم کہیں ہریجن غیر ہریجن کے درمیان نفرت ہے۔آے دن فساد ہو جاتے ہیں۔ کہیں زبان، مذہب، نسل اور صوبہ کے نام پر تو تو میں میں ہوجاتی ہے۔ ہمیں ان باتوں سے اوپر اٹھنا ہوگا اگر ہم ایسا نہ کر سکے تو اس سے ہندوستان کو کافی نقصان ہوگا۔ اسی پھوٹ کی وجہ سے ہم پہلے بھی غلام ہوئے تھے اور دوبارہ بھی تباہ وبرباد ہو سکتے ہیں۔

ہندوستان کے سرمایہ دار سماج کو دونوں ہاتھوں سے لوٹ رہے ہیں۔ دیش میں بیکاری،مہنگائی وغیرہ بڑھ رہی ہے۔ غریب آدمی اور زیادہ غریب ہورہے ہیں، مزدوروں کو ایکسپلائٹ کیا جارہا ہے رشوت خوری کا بازار گرم ہو رہا ہے، سیاست بھی شیطان کا کھیل بن کر رہ گئی ہے۔ لوگوں کا اخلاقی معیار اور قدریں گر گئی ہیں۔ اگر ہم نے آزادی کا پورا فائدہ لینا ہے اور اپنے آپ کو آزاد شہری کہلوانا ہے تو ہمیں سخت ہاتھوں سے ان برائیوں کو ختم کرنا ہوگا۔

سیاست کو ایک مقدس پیشہ میں بدلنا ہوگا، سرکاری دفتروں میں سے برسٹ چار کو ختم کرنا ہو گا۔جو لوگ فرقہ پرستی کو ہوا دیتے ہیں انھیں سخت ہاتھوں سے دبانا ہوگا۔جو سرمایہ دار ملاوٹ، ذخیرہ اندوزی اور ناجائز منافع خوری کرتے ہیں سماج کو ان کے چنگل سے بچانا ہو گا۔ اس لئے سرکار اور عوام دونوں کو مل کر آزادی کی بقاء کے لئے سماجی برائیوں کے خلاف اس طرح کی جدوجہد کرنی چاہیے جس طرح انہوں نے انگریزوں کے خلاف کی تھی۔تبھی ہم آزاد ہندوستانی کہلانے کے مستحق ہوں گے.
