Creative writing m.f.a. (ithaca), field of study.

English Language and Literature

Program Description

The M.F.A. Program.

The Creative Writing program in the department of Literatures in English offers an M.F.A. degree only, with concentrations in either poetry or fiction. Each year the department enrolls only eight students, four in each concentration. Our small size allows us to offer a generous financial support package, details of which are outlined on our department website. At the same time, we have a large and diverse graduate faculty with competence in a wide range of literary, theoretical, and cultural fields.

Students participate in a graduate writing workshop each semester and take 6 additional one-semester courses for credit, at least four of them in English or American literature, Comparative Literature, literature in the modern or classical languages, or cultural studies (typically two per semester during the first year and one per semester during the second year). First year students receive practical training by working as Editorial Assistants for Epoch, a periodical of prose and poetry published by the Creative Writing staff of the department. The most significant requirement of the M.F.A. degree is the completion of a book-length manuscript: a collection of poems, short stories, or a novel.

The Special Committee. Every student selects a Special Committee who will be responsible for providing the student with a great deal of individual attention. The University system of Special Committees allows students to design their own courses of study within a broad framework laid down by the department, and it encourages a close working relationship between professors and students, promoting freedom and flexibility in the pursuit of the graduate degree. The student's Special Committee guides and supervises all academic work and assesses progress through a series of meetings with the student.

Teaching. Teaching is considered an integral part of training for the profession. The Field requires a carefully supervised teaching experience as part of the training for the degree. The Department of English, in conjunction with the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines , offers excellent training for beginning teachers and varied and interesting teaching within the university-wide First-Year Writing Program. Graduate students are assigned to writing courses under such general rubrics as "Portraits of the Self," "American Literature and Culture," "The Mystery in the Story," "Shakespeare," and "Cultural Studies," among others. Serving as a Teaching Assistant for a lecture course taught by a member of the Department of English faculty is another way graduate students participate in the teaching of undergraduates.

A journey to Cornell for creative writing

Creative Writing Program

By | Molly Karr , Cornell Research

This Cornell Research story focuses on Nneoma Ike-Njoku , a first-year MFA student in creative writing, who hails from Lagos, Nigeria.

Ike-Njoku, who is a fiction writer, said the workshop atmosphere of Cornell's program has been one of its most surprising aspects.

“Before coming here, I had done a few workshop classes that were somewhat helpful. But this program, due to its size, is great because my peers are very careful readers. Everyone wants everyone to do their best work, so we support each other,” Ike-Njoku said.

First-year students in the program become familiar with public readings by having a showcase at a local bookshop in Ithaca. Second-year students can travel to New York City for the David L. Picket & Cornell Creative Writing Program Literary Reading in NYC , where literary agents might be in the audience. Those readings are thanks to the generosity of David Picket ’84.

Cornell's Creative Writing Program ranked among the nation's best

By george lowery.

Cornell's Creative Writing Program has been named one of the nation's top 10.

In its summer 2007 fiction issue, The Atlantic magazine included Cornell in its list of the leading U.S. graduate writing programs. The magazine cited the quality of the program's alumni and faculty, its selectivity and its resources.

"This is a great honor," said Molly Hite, professor and chair of Cornell's Department of English. "I'm delighted that The Atlantic put us in the top 10. On the other hand, I can't say I'm surprised. Our creative writing program is stellar, both because of its illustrious faculty and because the MFA program has graduated some of the most brilliant and successful fiction writers and poets of the last 50 years."

Rather than assign numeric values, The Atlantic listed the top 10 schools alphabetically: Boston University, the University of California-Irvine, Cornell, Florida State University, the University of Iowa, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Michigan, New York University, University of Texas' Michener Center and the University of Virginia. Faculty in the Cornell program include poet Alice Fulton, winner of the MacArthur Fellowship; Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alison Lurie; and best-selling novelist Robert Morgan ("Gap Creek").

More than 500 Cornell undergraduates enroll in campus creative writing courses annually. The graduate-level master of fine arts program is highly selective and admits four poets and four fiction writers each year. The Department of English and the Creative Writing Program publish the award-winning national literary journal Epoch, on which all MFA students work as associate editors.

"Cornell MFA graduates publish more, per capita, than just about any other MFA program in the United States," said Creative Writing Program director Stephanie Vaughn, professor of English.

Alumni include best-selling fiction writers such as Melissa Bank '88 ("A Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing"), Junot Diaz '95 ("Drowned"), A. Manette Ansay '91 ("Vinegar Hill"), Thomas Pynchon '59 ("Gravity's Rainbow") and Lauren Weisberger '99 ("The Devil Wears Prada").

"Unlike the faculty at many well-known writing programs, the Cornell creative writing faculty has for decades taught both undergraduate and graduate students," Vaughn said. "As a result, there is long list of extraordinary Cornell authors who were enrolled in English department writing courses."

The Creative Writing Program, according to Hite, "is growing even stronger, most recently because of a new series of invited readings that have allowed undergraduates, graduate students and faculty to interact with top fiction writers, poets and editors."

In the fall 2007 semester, the program will bring Salman Rushdie, Sandra Cisneros, William Kennedy and other writers of note to campus. The reading series is made possible by anonymous donors.

Low Residency MFA in Creative Writing

Master of fine arts in creative writing and poetics (low-residency).

Our low-residency MFA provides the structure, support, and professional development you need to take your writing to the next level .

Program Overview

Naropa’s Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing is designed for writers ready to hone their craft and earn their Master of Fine Arts degree through rigorous, cross-genre study. Students who can’t relocate to our Colorado Campus can acquire a quality asynchronous education with in-person residencies.

Whether you have a novel in progress, are preparing for a PhD program, or looking to strengthen your prose, poetry, and hybrid writing, our low-residency creative writing MFA program provides you with resources, accountability, and inspiration that fit your schedules.

Naropa takes traditional low-residency MFA programs a step further with our history of experimental and innovative writing, critical study, and cross-genre publishing. Our unique cross-genre online writing courses, generative residencies, and one-on-one mentorship provide students with a writing community, no matter where they live.

Cross-Genre Curriculum

Unlike other Creative Writing MFA programs, our low-residency MFA is open-genre. This means that writers can work in fiction, poetry, prose, non-fiction, playwriting, and hybrid forms throughout their degree program. Students experiment with narrative structures and forms that fit their unique voices. Writers develop their unique style, critical ear, and vast knowledge of contemporary trends across literary genres.

One-on-One Mentorship

One-on-one mentorship and small online writing classes help writers develop their style, refine their editing skills, and publish their work. Each writer dedicates their final semester to a thesis manuscript. Working one-on-one with their thesis mentor and workshopping with classmates through written exchange, students finish their MFA with a completed manuscript in the genre of their choice.

Generative Residencies

Every semester, our Low-Residency MFA students gather in Boulder, Colorado, for enriching and energizing residencies. MFA students meet one-on-one with mentors, enjoy master classes with guest writers, attend readings, and bond with writers. Residencies also overlap with our spring and fall symposiums, providing students with a rich 4-days of community and inspiration. Each academic year culminates in a week-long writing intensive at Naropa’s Summer Writing Program. This annual festival brings over 60 artists, writers, and thinkers to Boulder, for workshops, readings, panels, and professional development.
