How to Write A Resume: Formats, Samples, & Templates

Last Updated on – Feb 26, 2024 @ 5:24 am

If you were given one chance to interview for your dream job in the next 10 minutes, would your resume be up for the challenge?

A winning resume won’t automatically qualify you for the job. However, a bad one will automatically have your interviewer go #smh as she goes over your paper.

She’ll ask that you give back your apron because it’s the end of the line for you (sorry, been watching too much Masterchef lately).

Before we go cookin’ up that tasty, winning resume, let’s go over a question that most people ask when it comes to this topic: What’s the difference between a Curriculum Vitae and a Resume?

What is a Resume?

“Resume” is a French term for “Summary”. It’s basically a document containing relevant work experience and education to show your qualifications for a job you’re applying for.

What is a Curriculum Vitae?

On the other hand, the other document used in place of a Resume is “Curriculum Vitae”, which in Latin translates to “Course of Life”.

It’s a document containing details about your education, work experience, and achievements. It’s also made for the same purpose of showing your potential employers your qualifications for the job.

Resume vs. CV?

You probably noticed above that aside from achievements, a resume contains the same stuff that you’ll find in a CV.

In practice, however, there are 3 key differences between the two: Lay-out, length, and purpose.

Credit: NovoResume

Think of a resume as a shorter CV with focus on your skill summary and recent work background.

A CV, on the other hand, features a more detailed version wherein your academic accomplishments take center stage and almost always begins with the educational background.

Here’s a quick comparison table:

Focuses on Educational accomplishmentsFocuses on skill and work experience
Mainly used for applying in Academic positions, grants, fellowshipsUsed mainly when applying for jobs in the public and private sector
Length/number of pages is dependent on accomplishments listedUsually no longer than 2 pages
Leads with a listing of work accomplishments and skillsLeads with educational attainment and accomplishments
Layout is staticLayout can be more flexible, no hard rules

When and where to use a Resume?

Resumes are typically used when applying for jobs in the private and public sector.

When and where to use a Curriculum Vitae?

A CV is more commonly used in applying for positions that are related to the academe, grants, and fellowships.

How to Write a Resume

As simple as it may seem, crafting a winning resume entails more than simply dumping all sorts of personal and professional background information you can think of. That’s not going to land you any jobs, trust me.

In writing your resume, your mantra should always be this: Quality over quantity.

Each entry and word you will include should serve a purpose, and that is to pique your reader’s interest and provide a narrative of what you have accomplished and can do for them – just like a kickass Elevator Pitch .

Like a good storyteller, your job is to come up with an engaging plot about you that will keep your interviewer reading the rest of your information.

The goal is to build up your image and have them realize that you’re the best person for the job.

In this section we’ll break down the process of resume-building in 7 easy steps.

Step 1: Choose a Resume Format.

There are 3 types:

  • Reverse-Chronological (for showing a vertical career progression)
  • Functional (focuses on skills and abilities)
  • Combination (combines the best elements of the first 2 formats. For highlighting a core skill within a certain career)

Step 2: Decide on the content of your resume

Think very carefully on what you’ll include. This is where our mantra, “Quality over Quantity”, comes in.

An effective layout highlights your strengths and trims out the excess fat not worthy of the limited space.

Step 3: Collate all Professional and Personal Information

It will be a whole lot easier if you have all information available to you already so you can easily insert them within each corresponding section.

Don’t worry about perfecting every word in each entry right now, the goal is to simply prep everything for easy access later.

Step 4: Fill out the parts of your resume

Below is the typical format for a Resume, and the necessary details for each section:

1. Resume Heading

Contact info, Home Address, Email, Contact Number

2. Main Profile/Objective/Summary of Qualifications

Depending on the style you’re aiming for, this section aims to highlight your strengths and provides a quick overview of your experience and skills.

3. Work History

Lists out your employment history in reverse chronological order. Each position should list out key details like job title, dates of employment and accomplishments.

Include any volunteer work that you find significant or related to the post your applying for.

4. Skills

List out all skills that are related to your target job. Use bullet format if possible and keep an active tone and tense in your words.

5. Certifications/Awards/Accomplishments

A critical component of the resume especially if the accomplishments directly relate to the position your applying for.

Step 5:  Formatting

This step covers the part where you pick the fonts, colors, tables (if there’s any) and other minute details of the framework. Decide if you’ll be using paragraph or list style.

While lists are generally considered more due to readability, there are great examples of paragraph styles out there that might suit your preferences better.

Step 6: Polishing

Ramit Sethi, a best-selling author and entrepreneur, once wrote that he spent 100 hours working on his resume that got him offers from Google and Intuit.

After completing it, he said that each word in it was carefully considered and has earned a place on the page.

The lesson here is to make sure that you trim out the fat and aim for impact because a concise and laser-focused resume will make you stand out like a truffle among a sea of salt (his words not mine).

And that’s what you want.

Step 7: Proofread like a Pro

Separating the polishing stage from proofreading enables you to switch to your editor mode and zone in on any grammatical and typographical errors your resume might still have at this point.

It also helps in making sure your tone and tense is consistent all throughout. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Avoided the use of personal pronouns
  • Consistent in tense
  • Included action words (Strategized, Coordinated, Organized, Launched, Developed, Reduced, Decreased, Increased, Achieved, Built, Operated)
  • Avoided jargon and superfluous words
  • Gave your resume a professional file name

10 Tips for Writing Great Resumes

Tip #1: customize your resume for the job position.

While you may have come up with a well-crafted resume that lists out your overall strengths and skills, it will still fall short if it was not tailor-made for a specific job post.

Why? Because a laser-focused approach is always better than a general resume that simply outlines your capabilities.

Picture this scene:

Two engineers are applying for the same position (Electrical Engineer for a construction company).

Engineer #1 submits his go-to resume that lists down his skills and work history in reverse-chronological order.

This resume garnered him several interviews and leads a few years ago.

Engineer #2 pulls out his old resume and edits it to highlight his construction background and experience.

He included action verbs that emphasized his contributions that are related to the construction business.

He started off his resume by listing out skills, certifications, and experience pertaining to construction.

If you’re the hiring manager, which resume would interest you more?

That’s right! Engineer #2 wins by a mile simply because his resume is on-point with what the company is looking for. You see, making a resume is like auditioning for a play.

If the director wanted a Romeo to play with Juliet, why the heck would he pick the guy who kept on acting like he’s one of the Three Musketeers?

Customize your resume to align with what you’re applying for.

Tip #2: Quantify your Resume

Go back to our sample templates earlier and check out the “Examples of strong bullet points to mention” section.

What did you notice? Almost each entry was detailed in explaining what exactly applicant did in their previous job. Notice that exact figures were mentioned like

“Reduced costs by 15%, increased sales by Php 20,000, reduced downtime by 30 minutes, etc.

Numbers and figures attract the attention of the reader. Numbers also puts into  clear perspective what exactly you accomplished and can do for the hiring employer.

Imagine saying in your resume (when applying for an admin post, for example): “Reduced overall office expenses by as much as Php 50,000 by renegotiating with existing vendors and looking for better ones.”

The hiring manager can’t help but be impressed with such substantial and quantifiable results that they almost want to hire you on the spot.

She’s thinking, “We sure would like to save 50k too in our company”.

Compare that to the generic-sounding: “Reduced office expenses”, and you’ll see the big difference in the impact of quantifying facts and figures.

Tip #3: Action Verbs in Bullet Points

Checklists are great if you want to remember stuff you have to do. However, they shouldn’t be included if you want to make a kick-ass resume.

You’ll want to be as descriptive as possible yet still make it easy to read. How to do it? Answer: “Action-packed Bullet Points”.

Referring again to the examples of strong bullet points we showed earlier along with the suggested “Best Action Verbs” , we now have a useful bank for power words and phrases to base our bullet points on.

Here’s a quick formula:

Bullet = 1st Action Verb + Quantifiable Achievement + Specific task performed

Note that Quantifiable achievement and the specific task performed can be interchanged in sequence.

Let’s see it in action:

Developed a ticketing system that improved communication and support capacity by as much as 20 percent .

See what we did there?

We basically showed the hiring manager your experience/expertise and at the same time boast about the positive results that you helped achieved.

We’re hitting two birds with one stone here, and all it took was to use the formula we laid out above.

Tip #4: Leave no gaps in your work history

If you have gone through periods of unemployment sandwiched in-between jobs (a few months to a couple of years), make sure to NOT include them in your work history.

Because it will raise questions on your decision to be unemployed or reasons why you were and may open a can of worms that you don’t really want to discuss.

It also weakens your employment history by some degree as the interviewer might conclude that there must have been some issues that arose (that you’re not willing to discuss or be honest about).

But what if you really do have periods of unemployment? The answer: Utilize the right resume format. Remember the 3 formats we mentioned earlier?

Reverse-chronological, Functional, and Combination – for this particular situation, you may use either Functional (allows you to leave off work dates) or Combination (list out your work history per usual then when you reach the unemployment gaps, switch to listing your qualifications and ignore the dates.)

The bottom line is, don’t leave your resume looking weak by having gaps in your work history.

Tip #5: Leave out your hobbies and interests

Remember our rule about Quality over Quantity? A resume only has a finite amount of space and everything should earn its right to be included.

This means cutting out less important stuff like your personal interests and hobbies.

Because an interviewer is only looking for actual skills and work experience that the company can use, not read about how you love to play basketball or sketch caricatures of your dog the whole day.

Tip #6: Be professional all throughout

Once upon a time my sole email address was this: My Ragnarok Username @Yahoo.com. I don’t even want to mention it here, it just sounds silly.

I remember applying for a BPO in Makati and they had us write our contact information prior to initial screening. After calling my name, I sat face-to-face with the first interviewer.

With an annoyed look she asked, “Really, that’s the email address you’re using?”.

To cut the story short she gave me the boot and I just wasted a couple of hours commuting and waiting only to be dismissed as being unprofessional.

And I even wore my favorite polo that day. What a shame.

Here’s a quick guideline on what you should and should not include in your resume:

  • Don’t use an unprofessional sounding email.
  • Don’t include your nickname.
  • Don’t include a photo of yourself.
  • Don’t label the file name of your resume with (HIRE_ME_PLEASE.doc) or anything silly like that.
  • Use a professional-sounding email address. Create a new one if necessary.
  • Be 100% accurate in your contact details
  • Use a decent sounding file name when you save the resume doc

Tip #7: Write your resume as if you’re hooked to a lie detector machine

Yes, that’s right. Be 100% truthful on what you’re writing down in your resume. Some folks may be tempted to include a little white lie just to make their resume look more competitive.

Here’s my advice: Just don’t. If you get caught (which is likely if you boast about a skill/experience then can’t back up), not only is it embarrassing, but the hiring manager may tag your profile as fraudulent and blacklist your name from being able to apply in their company again.

And of course, it’s just plain wrong, bruh.

Tip #8: Use a professional-looking format

This includes the layout, fonts, and overall look of your resume.

You’ll be surprised that a lot of applicants out there don’t realize that using a Comic Sans font is not going to get them laughs from the hiring manager.

Be safe, use time-tested and proven formats that will best represent yourself and your professional capabilities.

Check out the samples we included here and pick the one that fits your personality best.

Tip #9: Sell yourself in just a few lines

Ask yourself, if the interviewer only had 15 seconds to read through my entire resume, what will she remember the most?

“Oh, he’s the guy who saved his previous employer a million pesos using his negotiating skills.”

Cool, right?

Instead of simply listing out your work history, aim for impact and present a narrative.

List out key accomplishments and your most memorable achievements because that’s what’s going to help your resume stand out from the rest.

Tip #10: Be Ruthless in Editing Your Resume

You may have to do this more than once to get to that point where you can honestly say that the final version is as lean as a pork tenderloin.

WIthout the fat (filler content and useless personal info), you’ll have a resume that packs in only the best and most meaningful stuff about you.

You’ll make it easier for the interviewer to know your story and create an image that aligns with what they’re looking for straight like a laser beam.

It’s focused, purposeful, and has a narrative. That’s what your editing goals should aim for.

Working in The Philippines as a Foreigner

The Philippines is home to a bustling ex-pat community – the Philippines has a reputation as a great place for foreigners to work, since most workplaces speak English and many multinational corporations have offices in Manila.

If you’re hoping to work in the Philippines as a foreigner, you’ll need to obtain a visa as well as a work permit. If you’re moving to the Philippines for work as part of a transfer for an international company, the company will likely help you figure out the details of your visa application.

If you’re hoping to move to the Philippines and find work later, you’ll need two things: your visa and work permit, and a killer resume to help you land your dream job in your new home. While we can’t be much help with the first, we can certainly help with the second! Let’s take a look at how to write a resume for the Philippines in more detail.

How to Write a Filipino Resume

The good news is that Filipino resumes are fairly close in format to most western resumes. You should include a brief summary, work experience highlighting your top skills and achievements, and your education. You may also choose to include a skills section to showcase your suitability for each role for which you apply, or an awards/certifications section if you have relevant points in that arena.

How to Write a Philippines Resume Summary

Your resume summary should be to the point and concise. Don’t worry about writing a resume summary with flowery language or anything overly gimmicky or attention grabbing – the point should be your accomplishments. In a resume summary, you might consider including:

  • Language proficiency
  • Degrees, awards, or certifications
  • Keywords included in the job description, if applicable (for example, expertise in a specific software or coding language)
  • Visa/work permit status, if applicable

How to Write a Philippines Resume Work Experience

The most important part of writing a work experience section for a Philippines resume is ensuring you include measurable results. The more you discuss specific results and achievements in your work experience section, the easier it will be for the hiring manager to understand what you bring to the table and how you’ll add value to their company. While it’s great to be able to say “Increased conversions” in your work experience section, elaborating to “spearheaded new remarketing campaign to increase conversion rate by 36% year over year” is much more clear and effective.

creating a filipino style resume

Imagine your resume as a passport to your dream job, reflecting your professional journey and potential.

Crafting a resume in the Philippines requires a strategic approach tailored to local preferences and standards.

From choosing the right format to showcasing your skills and accomplishments, each element plays a vital role in capturing the attention of potential employers.

Let’s explore the essential steps to create a compelling resume that stands out amidst fierce competition and opens doors to exciting career opportunities.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the difference between a resume and a curriculum vitae (CV) and choose the appropriate format for your needs.
  • Consider the pros and cons of different resume formats, such as functional, reverse-chronological, hybrid, and infographic, to present your information effectively.
  • Craft a clear and professional resume header, including your full name, contact information, and a professional email address.
  • Write a compelling introduction that grabs the reader’s attention, using powerful action verbs and quantifying your accomplishments to showcase your work experience and achievements.

Resume Vs. Curriculum Vitae

When deciding whether to create a resume or a curriculum vitae (CV), consider the specific requirements and conventions for each document.

In the Philippines, a resume is a concise two-page summary of your work experience, education, and achievements. It should include personal information, educational background, work history, skills, awards, and achievements.

On the other hand, a curriculum vitae (CV) is a more detailed document that emphasizes awards, achievements, and career in a brief manner. CVs have their own distinct formatting and typically contain similar content as a resume but in a more detailed and differently formatted manner.

When crafting your resume, focus on relevant information, ensuring it’s well-organized and attention to detail is crucial.

Understanding the differences between a resume and a CV is essential in presenting yourself effectively to potential employers in the Philippines .

Choosing the Right Format

To effectively choose the right format for your resume, consider the pros and cons of various formats and tailor your selection to best showcase your skills and experiences.

When deciding on the format for your resume, think about the specific structure and presentation that will effectively highlight your relevant experience.

The functional format emphasizes your skills and achievements rather than your work history, making it suitable for showcasing transferable skills.

On the other hand, the reverse-chronological format lists your work experience in chronological order, which is beneficial if you have a strong and continuous employment history.

A hybrid format combines elements of both the functional and reverse-chronological formats, offering a balanced view of your skills and work experience.

Lastly, an infographic format creatively presents your information visually, making it suitable for certain creative or design-oriented industries.

Crafting Your Resume Header

Craft your resume header by including your full name, contact information, and professional email address.

When writing a resume, the header is the first thing potential employers see, so make it clear and professional. Use a readable font and consider adding your LinkedIn profile or personal website if relevant to the job .

It’s essential for job seekers to double-check the accuracy of their contact information to avoid missed opportunities.

Keep the resume header simple and concise to ensure a clutter-free presentation. This is an important aspect of resume formatting, as it sets the tone for the rest of the document.

Writing a Compelling Introduction

Craft a compelling introduction by starting with a captivating opening statement that grabs the reader’s attention.

Use powerful action verbs and quantify your accomplishments to create an engaging first impression.

Ensure that your introduction effectively showcases your work experience and achievements.

Engaging First Impression

Your resume’s introduction should immediately grab the employer’s attention with a compelling statement that highlights your unique skills and experiences. To create an engaging first impression, follow these tips tailored for the Philippines:

  • Begin with a powerful opening that quickly showcases your value.
  • Highlight your most relevant professional achievements and career aspirations.
  • Customize your introduction to fit the specific job role and company.
  • Ensure that your introduction sets a positive and lasting tone for the rest of your resume.

Captivating Opening Statement

Start your resume with a captivating opening statement that immediately captures the employer’s attention and showcases your unique value as a candidate. This is your chance to make a strong first impression. Use compelling language to convey your passion, skills, and achievements right from the start.

Customize the opening statement for each job application, demonstrating a clear fit for the role. Keep it concise, impactful, and relevant to the specific job you’re applying for. Highlight your unique selling points and career goals to make the opening statement engaging and memorable.

Showcasing Your Work Experience

When showcasing your work experience on your resume, use bullet points to outline your key responsibilities and accomplishments in each role.

Quantify your achievements with numbers or percentages to demonstrate the real impact of your work.

Tailor your job history to match the position you’re applying for, focusing on relevant skills and experiences to make a strong impression.

Prior Work Roles

Upon entering the section on ‘Prior Work Roles’ (Showcasing Your Work Experience), it’s crucial to vividly illustrate your relevant work experience and accomplishments from previous positions.

Here’s how to effectively showcase your work experience to the hiring manager:

  • Use action verbs to describe your responsibilities and achievements in each work role.
  • Emphasize the impact and results of your work in your prior roles.
  • Tailor the description of your prior work roles to align with the job you’re applying for.
  • Quantify your achievements and responsibilities to showcase the scope of your prior work roles.

Achievements and Tasks

Highlight your achievements and tasks in each previous role to effectively showcase your work experience and qualifications for the job you’re applying for. Use powerful action verbs and quantify your accomplishments to make an impact.

Customize your resume by tailoring your work experience section to include specific tasks and achievements relevant to the job. Employ the CAR method (Challenge, Action, Result) to effectively showcase your work achievements.

Emphasize responsibilities and accomplishments that align with the job requirements. Utilize resume templates to create a professional and organized layout for your work experience section.

Relevant Job History

Your professional work experience should be detailed and emphasize achievements and results that align with the job you’re applying for. When showcasing your work experience in your resume, consider the following:

  • Utilize quantifiable data to highlight your accomplishments, such as sales figures, project outcomes, or cost savings.
  • Tailor your job history to the specific job you’re applying for, focusing on relevant experiences and skills.
  • Highlight any promotions, leadership roles, or special projects you have led in your previous positions.
  • Use powerful action verbs to describe your job responsibilities and achievements.

Highlighting Your Education

Emphasize your educational background to showcase your qualifications effectively on your resume. Whether you’re a fresh graduate or someone with years of work experience, highlighting your education is crucial. Here’s a simple way to present your educational background on your resume:

Degree School Year Graduated
Bachelor’s Degree University of the Philippines 2016
High School Diploma Manila Science High School 2012
Master’s Degree Ateneo de Manila University 2020

Including your educational achievements, such as obtaining a master’s degree, can set you apart from other candidates. If you’re a fresh graduate, your academic accomplishments can compensate for the lack of work experience. Always ensure that your educational background is clearly and accurately presented to make a strong impression on potential employers.

Emphasizing Hard and Soft Skills

To effectively showcase your qualifications on your resume, focus on highlighting both your technical expertise, such as programming languages and software proficiency, and your soft skills, including communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities.

  • Quantify your achievements to demonstrate your impact and effectiveness.
  • Use powerful action verbs to describe your accomplishments.
  • Tailor your skills to match the job requirements and show how they’ve contributed to your previous roles.
  • When detailing your work experience, use a functional resume format to emphasize your interpersonal skills and how they’ve positively influenced your past positions.

Adding Personalized Sections

Consider adding personalized sections to your resume, such as skills and achievements. These sections can help you showcase your unique qualifications and experiences, setting you apart from other candidates.

Another section to consider is relevant certifications. Including certifications that are relevant to the job you are applying for can demonstrate your commitment to professional development and your expertise in a particular area.

Additionally, including a section on language proficiency can be beneficial, especially if the job requires bilingual or multilingual abilities. Highlighting your language skills can show your ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals or work in international settings.

Remember to tailor these sections to match the job requirements and company culture. Make sure they add value to your overall resume and align with the specific skills and qualifications the employer is seeking.

Skills and Achievements

Showcase your unique strengths and accomplishments by creating a customized ‘Skills and Achievements’ section tailored to highlight specialized skills, certifications, and relevant achievements for the target job or industry. Here’s how to make this section stand out:

  • Quantify Achievements: Use metrics and figures to quantify your achievements, emphasizing the impact and results of your work.
  • Tailor to Job Requirements: Align your resume with specific job requirements, emphasizing the most relevant skills and achievements for the position.
  • Incorporate Personalized Sections: Add sections such as ‘Professional Development,’ ‘Leadership Experience,’ or ‘Projects and Publications’ to demonstrate additional relevant qualifications.
  • Highlight Work Experience: Emphasize your relevant work experience, showcasing how it has equipped you with the necessary skills and achievements for the job.

Relevant Certifications

Emphasize your specialized skills and expertise by incorporating a section for relevant certifications on your resume. This will further bolster your ‘Skills and Achievements’ segment. In the Philippines, employers value relevant certifications that demonstrate your ability to contribute effectively to the job.

Highlight certifications that are directly related to the job position and ensure they’re current and align with the job requirements. Use bullet points to succinctly showcase the certification name, issuing organization, and date of completion. This makes it easy for employers to identify pertinent qualifications.

Including relevant certifications in your resume not only showcases your expertise but also sets you apart from other candidates with similar work experience.

Language Proficiency

Demonstrate your language proficiency by including a dedicated section in your resume to showcase your fluency in different languages. Use a rating system, such as basic, intermediate, advanced, or native fluency, to indicate your proficiency level in each language.

Highlighting your language skills can significantly enhance your work experience and make your resume stand out. List the languages you’re proficient in, such as English, Tagalog, or other relevant languages. If you have any language certifications or have completed relevant courses, be sure to include them to validate your proficiency.

Tailor this section to align with the language requirements of the job or industry you’re targeting. This will demonstrate your adaptability and readiness to contribute effectively.

Proofreading and Reviewing

When proofreading and reviewing your resume, ensure that spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors are thoroughly checked. Review the overall structure and flow of your resume to ensure coherence and clarity.

It’s important to ensure consistency in formatting, font type, and font size throughout the document. Look for any factual inaccuracies or inconsistencies in dates, job titles, and other details. Seek feedback from others to get a fresh perspective and identify any areas that may need improvement.

In the context of writing your resume in the Philippines, proofreading and reviewing play a crucial role in presenting a professional and polished document. Take the time to meticulously review your resume to make a positive impression on potential employers.

Guide on Writing a Resume – Creating the Perfect Ticket to Your Dream Job

Resume Writing

After getting your diploma from college and taking a suitable amount of time off, now’s the perfect time for the next move: create a resume, a ticket to a job you’ve always wanted. Your resume can either make or break the first step into the corporate world, and you’re determined to create a proper summary of your abilities. However, one question comes into your mind: “What should I do?” Before we jump right into things, check your current resume and get ready to take some notes. We will help you construct the ideal resume and convince the hiring manager that you are fit for the role. Please take note that while we present you the appropriate practice for writing resumes, there isn’t a guarantee that your piece will help you get 100% employed. The interview process is also a hiring factor and demands a different kind of preparation.

Differences Between Resume and Curriculum Vitae

Back in college, subjects such as Personality Development and Corporate Communications will teach you about the inner workings of the corporate world. From these subjects, professors also discuss the features of a resume and a curriculum vitae — documents that detail your skills for recruiters to identify your suitability for a position.

A resume is a document that contains your work experience, educational background, and achievements. Resumes are usually extensive and two pages long, with different formats available for selection. Some applicants submit a single-page resume containing only the relevant information required by the employer.

Curriculum Vitae (abbreviated as “CV”), on the other hand, is a detailed document with contents similar to a resume but different in terms of formatting. It seeks to emphasize details such as achievements, awards and scholarship grants together with the applicant’s career in a brief manner.

After writing your first resume or CV, you will notice the difference between its formats and presentation. In the United States , resumes are competency-based while CVs are credential-based. Jobs in the academe research, and medical fields require CVs to identify the applicant’s educational background, certifications and awards, professional experience, and affiliations with licensed and renowned organizations.

Companies in the Philippines might request for either a resume or a CV depending on the requirements specified on their job post. However, how are you supposed to construct one? Not to worry, the next section will further discuss what goes on your job application and how you can improve them.

Writing your Resume

Creating a job application may take some time. You might be thinking of the details a resume must have and how pristine it should look. The process may be tedious, but once you master the essentials in the writing process, you’re off to great opportunities in no time.

Take note that your resume must have the following details or sections:

  • Personal Information
  • Your Objective or Professional Summary
  • Educational Background
  • Work Background
  • Skills and Competencies
  • Awards and Affiliations
  • Achievements

You may opt to modify portions of your resume to your liking as long as it doesn’t look messy. Remember that an unorganized resume can leave you with a bad impression so keep your content tidy for a presentable resume.

1. List Down Relevant Information

The initial parts of the resume must contain your personal information, educational background, and previous work experience. Fresh graduates applying for the first time must include their internship experience as a substitute for a detailed work background. After gathering the necessary data, compile them on a piece of paper or encode them on your computer.

We urge you to put relevant information on your resume and refrain from adding unnecessary details. Leave out other personal data (age, sex, height), salary history, and skills not connected to the job function of your chosen field.

2. Select a Format

There are three types of resumes: chronological, functional, and combined. Each format may vary in terms of sequence and formatting. Remember to check your details first before you pick a format to use. However, if you choose to create a CV, your only concern will be its length and the number of details you place.

Our sample resumes includes instructions on what you can do to create an orderly resume. To lessen the hassle of building a resume from scratch, you can check the sample formats below to get a headstart and construct your ideal resume.

Chronological Resume Format

The chronological format, also known as “reverse chronological”, is a resume format that emphasizes the work experience of the applicant from recent to oldest. According to Novoresume , this is the most common format that employers receive from applicants.

When writing a chronological resume, place your work experience first before your skills, competencies, and educational background. Fresh graduates can utilize this format by presenting their internship experience first before everything else.

Functional Resume Format

The functional format may sound new to most readers who recycle the same chronological resume format from their previous job hunts. This format may either highlight the skill-sets of the applicant or their work experience and achievements. Information such as your education and affiliations are placed afterward.

We highly recommend the functional resume format for applicants exploring new fields of practice. For job seekers with “employment gaps,” Monster finds the functional format appropriate to use in highlighting your specializations instead.

Combined Resume Format

A combined format integrates parts from both chronological and functional resumes. This type of resume puts emphasis on both skills and work experience. The applicant can divide and place their relevant qualifications on one side and their employment timeline on the other half, allowing employers to quickly scan through specific sections of their resumes.

Our sample above is a single-page combined resume. The applicant starts with the relevant experience first, the employment history on the second, and lastly, their academic history. Job seekers with more than five years of work experience can utilize this format to emphasize significant contributions and achievements during their career.

Curriculum Vitae

Creating a CV may differ from crafting a resume. As previously mentioned, this document emphasizes your educational attainment and work experience in full detail rather than in a brief summary. You might notice that our sample CV bears a different format from the sample resumes above. A CV’s layout contains extensive details and attention to accommodate more information.

The Balance Careers states that a CV format may vary depending on the applicant’s field and expertise. But you can use any of the three resume formatting guidelines for creating a CV. For reference, you can review the sample formats in the previous section and incorporate the elements of a CV in each format.

3. Fill Up the Resume or CV

After selecting your preferred format, you can now create the initial draft. The arrangement between work history and skills may vary based on your format. Emphasize either your technical and interpersonal skills, or your work experience.

Start first by writing your resume header. The header must include your complete name, home address, email address, and contact numbers. Provide your main profile with an overview of your experience and abilities. Then arrange the details based on your chosen format.

4. Format and Proofread

After providing the necessary information and using the resume format of your choice, now’s the time to re-check your entire piece. Are the font sizes consistent? How about the spaces and indentations on the document? Can you still fit more details on one page? Make it a practice to scan your resume until everything looks uniform.

But, don’t forget to check every word you type on the resume and proofread afterwards. Employers usually read the core skills and work experience of the applicant before the rest of the sections in their resumes or CVs. Typos and misspelled words on the work experience and skill-set sections may cause recruiters to think that you rushed the creation of the job application.

5. Recheck then Submit your Application

After writing your resume or CV from scratch, scanning the entire document for any errors on formatting, and proofreading the content to make sure that recruiters can immediately identify your strengths and contributions, the most crucial part: applying for a job.

If you’re confident that the resume is ready for submission to recruiters, look for prospect companies and send copies of your application. Don’t forget to provide a nice cover letter to properly introduce yourself and entice employers of what you can contribute to the workforce.

Finally, your resume will represent who you are and how you can contribute to different organizations, so don’t lose focus and pay attention during interviews. You may run through different recruiters from various fields, but at the end of the job hunt, a greater opportunity will be waiting for you. Good luck, job seekers!

Resume Sample Philippines: Best Resume Tips for Job Seekers

The resume is still essential in selling yourself to employers, and even in our digital age providing a printed one or two pages to summarize what you bring to the job hasn’t gone out of style. We list fourteen resume tips for college students who may be unfamiliar with how resumes are reviewed, who reviews them, and the best ways to highlight a limited job experience history and skill set.

Resume tips for college students cover some general territory for all resumes and add a few specific pieces of advice for those just getting started in their careers.

What Is a Resume?

The resume summarizes education, training, job experience, and relevant information about the job candidate. It has changed slightly over the years, but not by much. Your resume should list work experience, education, additional training or certification, your name and contact information, volunteer experience and skills – in a specific order.

What Is a Curriculum Vitae?

The CV is a shorter acronym for curriculum vitae. It is a document that shows a general summary of your personal information, educational background, previous job experiences, and references for your upright moral upbringing. It was primarily used for applying employment in the academe of any educational institution. Later on, almost all industry require the submission of a CV.

If the position that you are applying for requires for your compliance in the submission of a well-drafted CV, it needs to be tailored as to what field you would like to dedicate your career with.

The example included on this section, your application for a liberal arts position must highlight your teaching experience and other important seminar or training that would make you fit for a career that you want to dedicate your time with. Your research accomplishments must be clearly presented also.

What Is the Difference between a Resume and a CV?

The CV stands for “curriculum vitae” which summarizes education, training, and skills but in academic environments. The CV is used by those working in professions where many years of education are required, such as medicine or academia. It lists educational achievements in great detail, including academic papers and completion of internships. Most job seekers will not use CVs but if a job asks for a CV, it is okay to send in a resume in place. Asking for a CV is often code for “you have a high level of education.”

When and where to use a Resume?

Using a resume is ideal if you would like to present yourself as a high-skilled applicant and conceal any gaps in employment and/or not much relevant job experience. If a functional resume format is the best fit for you, this article will guide you through how to use a functional resume template to highlight your skills and achievements and how to present you in the best light to potential employers.

Usually, employers are looking at a potential hire’s resume to see if they have relevant and extensive job experience. You can choose to explain why you have employment gaps in your resume, or just emphasize your experience, skills, and major achievements. There are many strategies to make unemployment gaps less noticeable.

Using a functional resume template will help you conceal any unemployment gaps and emphasize your skills and achievements. But, it is not only the structure that counts; to write an effective functional resume, you must tell a compelling story about your skills and achievements. How can you present yourself and land an interview? To do this, you should choose powerful and relevant keywords that will show the recruiter you fit the job description and are a good candidate for the position. There also Templates to Download online for an easier way of building your own resume.

When and where to use a Curriculum Vitae?

Having a Curriculum Vitae is not only beneficial for you, but it is also advantageous for your potential clients and employers. It provides them with a convenient sneak preview to get to know your skills, services, and work output better before going through the selection process. Hiring managers and clients rely on a CV because it expedites the process of selecting the best candidates or services that suit your potential client or employer’s needs.

For graphic designers, photographers, writers, comic book illustrators, and animators, having an impressive CV could mean gaining a new project or winning a long-term relationship with a new client. A showcase of their best work through a CV highlights their unique qualities and skills set — it’s what distinguishes them from their competitors. The effective CV presents yourself as a high-skilled applicant and conceals any gaps in employment and/or not much relevant experience. Some fill-in CV Templates to Download online to make sure you are doing the right things.

What is the best resume format?

In these resume tips for college students, we recommend sticking with one-page formatting for the best resume. For those with ten or more years of experience, or who are using a CV, two pages is an appropriate length. Employers prefer one-pagers in entry-level positions. Try to balance the main categories of Education, Work Experience, Skills and Other. Other can include awards, projects, or links to work you want to show. You can opt to look for Templates to Download which is free in some sites online.

How to Write a Resume That Will Get You an Interview

In today’s day and age, your resume is just as important as your experience itself. Some large companies won’t even take a look at your portfolio unless you’ve included a concise resume and cover letter. Resumes for freelance photographers are not only a must if you want to reach high-end clients but it’s a great way for you to keep track of and catalog your accomplishments.

Step 1: Choose a Resume Format

Finding a job is a complicated process. It takes time to scour job sites and other avenues to find a job that fits you. Once you find it, you need to send in a resume that will impress enough to get you an interview. It’s a daunting task, but there is something that can make it easier—resume templates.

A resume is your first impression to a prospective employer. You need it to be as impressive as possible, and you’re right to want to make the perfect resume. With the right resume templates, you can craft the best resume that will wow employers and gets you in the door.

Resume templates offer you a way to avoid spending your time setting up Microsoft Word and just writing your resume, but they aren’t perfect either. Many people believe that because resume templates are so easy to make, they come across as basic to hiring managers. However, it’s important to remember that resumes are supposed to communicate your qualifications in a simple and direct way. In addition, there are so many resume templates available that you can still create something unique that communicates your professional information.

Having so many templates available can be a hindrance. It’s easy to pick resume templates that might not work for the position you want. However, just like you narrowed down what job you wanted, you can narrow down the right template, too. It just requires asking yourself a few questions about what you need. Formats, Samples, & Templates are available online to make sure you are on the right track.

Step 2: Decide on the content of your resume

Now that you understand what goes into finding a format for your resume, it’s time to examine the content of your resume. Remember that Formats, Samples, & Templates are available online as a guide as to what content you need to place on your resume.

Who Is the Audience?

Your resume is going to be seen by specific companies. Therefore, you need simple resume templates that appeal to them. For example, don’t pick something flashy for a more conservative company. Do your research and pick from resume templates that appeal to the company you’re applying to.

What Does My Template Say about Me?

It can’t be overstated that your resume is your first impression to a potential employer. It’s the deciding factor between getting an interview and being ignored. Make sure that the template you choose reflects you properly. It should show your qualifications and other factors that may help you get the job.

How Do I Find a Balance?

Resume templates can help show your personality, which may help potential employers choose you from among several applicants. However, that will only get you so far. Your resume needs a proper balance of personality and ability. Hiring managers will want to see a qualified employee that feels right for their workplace.

Step 3: Collate all Professional and Personal Information

There are services that will write resumes for you and check all details to make sure it meets professional standards. You supply the information, and someone else puts it into the right format. You will pay for such a service and the first draft should be attempted by you, the job seeker. You know yourself best. If you don’t want to pay, get help from a trusted friend or older sibling who has a little more experience in the workforce than you do. They will be happy to at least show you their resume as a model.

Your Information

You need to list your personal contact information at the beginning of the resume. Put your name, address, and phone number. Include your social media profile, website, if you have one, and don’t forget your proper email address. If you are concerned about giving away too much personal information, then only provide what the company needs to get in touch with you. Also, include the date, so they know when you sent it to them.

Introduce Yourself

The introduction is critical. This happens in the very first paragraph of your resume, and for the employer, it is the first time meeting you. Think of it as an interview; make it brief and concise. In a few short lines, tell the company about yourself and explain why you are interested in working for them. Your earlier research comes in handy for this paragraph.

Your Qualifications

Now is the time to pull out all the stops. Don’t be shy on this step and let your confidence shine through. You want them to know you have the qualifications to work in their company because you have the experience. Now is not the time to recite your previous jobs or list all of your skills; that is what a resume does for you. It is a time for you to tell them how you can be an asset to their team and tell them how qualified you are.

It is important to remember that you are letting them know you are competent, but you don’t want to sound like you are bragging or overselling yourself. You won’t win any points with that type of communication. Let them know what you have been doing regarding relevant experience, and how this will be of value to them. This can be divided into two paragraphs if needed, but do not overdo it. You are trying to impress them in a short amount of time. Being too wordy will cause them to lose interest.

Think of this as the highlight of a book. You want the reader to read the book, so you write a teaser, in the beginning, to keep them interested. This is the same with this section of your letter. It is your teaser to keep them wanting more. Tell them enough so they become interested and want to meet with you.

Step 4: Fill out the parts of your resume

Contact information.

Include your name, phone number, and email in the resume’s header. The font size for this section should be larger than the rest of the resume, so your name and contact information stands out – 20-24 points is recommended. You can also add a link to your website or samples of your work in this section of your resume.

Starting with a summary is a good strategy to help you stand out and conceal unemployment gaps and spotty work experience. A powerful summary should include your most relevant experience and your greatest career achievements written in a short paragraph or bulleted list. With a powerful summary, you will present yourself like an outstanding and multi-faceted candidate, and you’ll be one step closer to getting your foot in the door.

Writing a good summary is also a great way to introduce yourself and increases your chances of landing an interview. Since it is the first thing hiring managers to see after your contact information, it is a great opportunity to impress them by including your highest achievements, relevant skills, and relevant work experience. It also allows you to use relevant keywords and pass the Applicant Tracking (ATS) software.

In a functional resume template, proper skills are emphasized over work experience. Since job candidates using this format seek to conceal or minimize any gaps in employment or are changing careers, listing relevant skills before work experience is important to make the candidate stand out.

Work or Professional Experience

If you have long gaps of employment, you can include a well-written reason why you were unemployed in your resume; for example, you can explain that you were a full-time student, you were unemployed because of an illness in the family, or you have recently become a parent. If you don’t want to explain your employment gaps in the resume, be prepared to answer the recruiter when these topics are addressed during your interview. Also, remember to list your work experience chronologically, but do not include months.

Your educational background must be well-written in the same way as it is in a chronological or combination resume unless your education relates directly to your work experience and the job you are applying to. In this case, add more details like relevant coursework and research papers.

Start by writing the name of the university, city, and state, the degree earned, your graduation date, and your GPA. If you had a low GPA, consider leaving this information out. Also, you may want to leave out the date of graduation if older to avoid being discriminated against because of your age. If your education is relevant, add a few bullets points with the details.

One of the things that’s widely debated amongst resume writers is the idea of including or skipping schooling. If you’re just out of school, even with a lot of experience, sometimes adding your graduation date can make hiring managers pass you by. Although we live in a world where companies want fresh graduates to somehow have years of internship and real-world experience under their belts, it doesn’t always help you if you do. Unfortunately, a lot of large companies and older individuals still value age as the best indicator of experience.

If you feel your age or graduation date could play a negative role in a hiring managers decision process, leave it out. We’re seeing more and more resumes from seasoned professionals remove schooling to ensure it no longer plays a factor in the decision making processes.

Step 5: Formatting

As mentioned, there are many resume formats that are well-written out there for you to consider. We’ve compiled a list of what we feel are the best formats to consider. However, don’t be afraid to go beyond our list as well. For a hassle-free resume-writing, you can check for Formats, Samples, & Templates online.

Professional

This is the most common of resume formats. This template is accepted in every industry and works for every role. A solid choice if you are unsure which template would work best. It works well for jobs in law, production, or for people with long/short job histories,

This format is best used for jobs representing strong brands ever. It’s also useful for any job that requires up-to-the-minute knowledge. As such, it’s popular for tech, consulting, or sales jobs.

Creative/Contempo

As its name suggests, this works best for job seekers that are applying in creative fields. Those fields usually require more effort to stand out more and also double as an example included of your skill. Be sure to pick a good one! This template is best for design, entertainment, social media, and similar fields.

Step 6: Polishing

The CV must have a well-written strong ending just as it has a strong beginning. Don’t rehash what you have said earlier or ask them to respond to you within a specific timeframe. This is your CV, not an interview. You hope it will generate an interview, but you must not pressure them to do so.

The two things to keep in mind is respecting their time and getting a possible meeting or on the next stage of the interview. When you end your CV, thank them for the opportunity and ask for the chance to meet with them when it is convenient. One more thing to remember at the end is your signature. You will want to sign your CV by hand to add personalization. After it’s been printed, you can sign your name in ink. Some people’s signatures are illegible and printing your name right after helps with legibility.

Step 7: Proofread like a Pro

This step is essential to writing any kind of document, personal or professional. Go over your completed template carefully, making everything (spelling, punctuation, etc.) is accurate. You also need to make sure the resume as a whole looks it’s absolute best. A polished, well-done resume can be the difference between being hired and being pushed aside.

How do I make a resume for a job?

A resume includes five components: personal information, summary, relevant skills, professional experience, and education – in that order. But, the most important section of a resume is the summary. A well-written summary allows you to present your greatest career achievements and relevant experience and hooks the recruiter’s attention. Pick your greatest achievements and relevant work experience and break them down into four categories: authority, creativity, efficiency, and recognition.

First, list your strongest skills, length of experience in the industry, and an overview of your latest position (see the functional resume template for guidance). Next, include creative examples, such as a challenging project you started and successfully saw through to completion (an example included of your ability to solve projects; what problem did you solve for the project?).

Last, in this category, list your creative process and strategies to increase productivity than ever. Continue with the efficiency category by listing examples of how you managed or contributed to a particular project by increasing productivity and saving time and resources while producing high-quality work. Also, list in the summary any major awards, mentions, and honors you’ve received. Finally, you should highlight your management and communication skills by the specific examples included.

Make sure your resume is easy to read by using a simple and respected font like Times, Arial, or Helvetica and by using concise sentences and paragraphs. If you want to give yourself the best chance to go on the next stage of the interview and be hired, you’ll want to ensure everything on your resume is relevant to the application process. Too many professionals keep things like sports accomplishments, GPAs, and volunteer experience on resumes when they’re not completely relevant.

This goes for your work experience as well as your personal information. Most hiring managers won’t care if you helped put together the company Christmas party, so don’t highlight it. Don’t be afraid to add things and take things out to ensure your resume makes sense for each specific job posting.

Tailor Your Resume

Whether you are applying for a talent acquisition specialist role or any other role, you need to tailor your resume to the job you are applying. Carefully read the job description you are applying for and take note of which soft and hard skills are noted as required or preferred and highlight these in your resume. Also, make sure you include relevant experience.

Use of Industry Keywords

Sometimes, a recruiter will read your entire resume. Larger companies may use a computer program to scan your resume searching for keywords relevant to the industry position. If you fail to use industry keywords, computer software may prevent your resume from ever being seen by human eyes or a recruiter may not pass your resume along.

Use a Header

How your resume looks impacts how favorably it is viewed by the recruiter or hiring manager. Use a header to put your name, contact information, and the position you are applying for. This makes it look like you are tailoring your resume to the position and makes you stand out for all the right reasons.

Back up Your Skills

Do not just talk about your skills. Use examples to show how you have used them to benefit your previous companies. Rather than saying you have sales skills, say you increased placement by 31%. Always use metrics to demonstrate what your skills have brought to the table in the past so your recruiter can determine if your skills will be beneficial in this role.

10 Tips for Writing Great Resumes

We chose ten resume tips for college students, for those who are attempting a resume for the first time or who are updating one to include college experiences and coursework. The resume tips for college students we’ve listed aren’t meant as a step-by-step guide but should be considered as you approach your first resume. Read the whole list first to use these resume tips for college students selectively or as an overview.

Tip #1: Customize your resume for the job position

Write a list of all jobs, no matter how small. Include delivering newspapers, babysitting, pet sitting, or fixing neighbors’ computers. Make a list of all volunteer work including church or neighborhood related events for expats in the Philippines. Include school awards or special positions (Editor of the school newspaper, for example), especially any office such as student council. Don’t limit it to academics: sports, travel, and internships count, too. If you are a college student, listing high school activities is entirely appropriate.

Tip #2: Quantify your Resume

Because you are in college your most important asset is your education. List the degree you’ve received or the plan to receive, the name of the college, and your major and minor. List coursework relevant to the position you are applying for or that has given you special skills. List both your high school education and college, beginning with the most recent (college) at the top. Be sure to write the full name of both schools. For high school, it is appropriate to write your “major” or main course of study or even list the focus of the school, whether science or arts.

Tip #3: Action Verbs in Bullet Points

Bullet points are a great way to slim down a lot of content. Like we mentioned above, most hiring managers aren’t going to want to spend a lot of time reviewing a resume. If someone can glance at your resume and understand your qualifications in a few seconds, then you’ll be well on your way to new opportunities. Just make sure that you reserve bullet point information for the most important and relevant snippets possible. After all, the eye is going to be drawn to read bullet points well before a paragraph, so make sure the most pertinent accomplishments are listed there.

After Education, the next category you should address is either Skills or Experience—whichever is your strongest area. If you have several jobs under your belt, move from Education directly to Work Experience. If, however, you have a specific skill set such as computer repair or landscaping, present what you are capable of doing in a bulleted list.

If you are an overseas Filipino applicant, you need to use action-oriented verbs to describe yourself and your experiences. For example, if your summer job for two years in a row was McDonald’s, state that you have years of experience in the restaurant industry especially if you are one of the expats in the Philippines. Describe your position as, for example, “Managed front counter while multi-tasking in food preparation, payments, and order-taking for a variety of customers on a tight schedule.”

Tip #4: Leave no gaps in your work history

As you are dynamic, you come across not only as a professional but as emotionally invested in the job. As a new graduate, the type of work experience you describe is sometimes less important than your initiative in getting the work done on time, or completing projects. If you mowed lawns for several summers in the neighborhood and recruited a friend to help, you can represent what you did realistically but also give yourself credit for the amount of responsibility.

Tip #5: Leave out your hobbies and interests

Does your experience consist entirely of delivering pizza a driving for Lyft as an Overseas Filipino? Make sure to present these jobs as “transportation” and tie together the common skills and knowledge, such as knowing the local area, professional driving experience, and customer service. You may have three jobs that are entirely unrelated, so focus on the skills needed to do them or the knowledge acquired. In some cases, you may have the same role in each job, so focus on the importance of that role. If you were a cashier at a restaurant, retail shop, an amusement park, highlight your skills at cashiering.

Tip #6: Be professional all throughout

Employers are looking for good matches for any new graduate than any other expats in the Philippines. They are deluged with paper resumes and go through them as quickly as possible searching for specific attributes. The three main attributes are: (1) a well-written, grammatically correct resume; (2) having enough education; and (3) a match in experience or skills, or have a specific skill to perform the basic job function so little to no training is required.

Tip #7: Write your resume as if you’re hooked to a lie detector machine

All resume tips for college students need to emphasize specific projects or a role you took own to achieve something extraordinary. This is especially true because including experiences in high school is necessary if you are currently in college. Did you organize an event, lead a volunteer campaign, or take on extra responsibility to help a teacher, neighbor, or employer? Did you re-organize work, alter workflows, or come up with a new idea to improve old practices? If you are a new graduate, highlight your achievements, even small ones, so the employer gets an idea of what you did and can do again.

Tip #8: Use a professional-looking format

Indicate where and when you’ve acquired education and include experiences that go beyond the classroom especially if you are one of the expats in the Philippines. Did you travel and take a course in the local language? Perhaps you shadowed someone in a specific profession to find out more about day-to-day work. A police ride-along, attending a community or city council meeting, or mentoring kids in learning are all great examples of showing an interest in learning. Even online courses show initiative and that you are interested in the field and in acquiring skills.

Tip #9: Sell yourself in just a few lines

Include with your resume artwork, published writing, acclaimed writing, the code you have written, or a photograph of something as an overseas Filipino you have created. Better yet as a new graduate, share a URL to a link with a webpage where your work is posted. There is a caveat to this tip, however. Do not share work that is racy, irrelevant, or amateurish because it can easily backfire. If you are a tattoo artist or graphic designer, you will probably have a portfolio but if you are a criminal justice major, you may not have work to “show.” Use a well-written essay or an example for a well-reviewed group project that go you an A.

Leadership comes in many forms and can include leading groups of children, organizing events, or getting others involved in community events. Leadership in high school includes creating clubs, running for or getting elected to office, taking a lead role in any job, or starting your own business. Introducing others to your sport or hobby can sometimes be leadership, or being chosen for special events or retreats as part of a group of leaders. If this isn’t your strong point, emphasize instead the skills you have that will contribute to a team or organization.

Tip #10: Be Ruthless in Editing Your Resume

Putting together a resume that is too short highlights how little experience you have, and this is especially problematic for college students. Many college students have held only one job, and that doesn’t fill up a page. But far more commonly, job seekers write resumes of more than a page which is never called for when you are a college student and will always come across as pretentious. You are competing with individuals who have years, sometimes decades, of experience and are able to limit their resumes to two pages, sometimes one.

Resume writers quickly become jaded and bored with reading and re-reading their resumes as a new graduate. One of the most important resume tips for college students is the polished, professional appearance of the final product. It must be perfect. Every “i” should be dotted and every “t” crossed, or a reviewer may see the error and then all shots at employment disappear.

If you aren’t an experienced writer or particularly skilled at highly detailed work, have someone older and more experienced review your resume and ask for feedback, including proofreading. Then read it again for errors. Put it aside for a day, and re-read once more.

Benefits of CV

If you are getting nervous because you’ve sent numerous resumes but have generated no interest? If so, you may be using the wrong format for your resume or haven’t sufficiently focused on your strengths in your resume. A resume doesn’t fully reflect your capabilities or intelligence but is a great tool to sell yourself and help you get your foot in the door. But, what if you have periods of unemployment or no relevant work experience? There three commonly used resume formats: the chronological resume, the functional resume template, and the combination resume.

A strong resume is essential in today’s’ competitive job market. Recruiters are bombarded with dozens of resumes daily. The functional resume for a new graduate is not the best format; all formats have pros and cons. A functional resume may make the recruiter think you have something to hide. But, it’s still a more creative way of writing a resume, and because it emphasizes your skills and accomplishments, it will get the hiring manager’s attention and help you stand out.

The functional resume is also the best resume if you have gaps in employment or are changing careers. If either applies to you, choose the functional resume template that best suits your needs and creates a compelling resume that helps you land your dream job.

Learning how to make money in college without a job is not difficult. It is a matter of drive and determination. Start by curating excellent study habits so you can balance all your commitments effectively and make your Overseas Filipino parents proud. Look out for shady schemes that promise you easy ways to make money. Put your classes first, and look for other ways to save money to supplement your income. Finally, examine all your options for how to make money in college without a job, and decide which one is the best for you. You can even do multiple jobs so you can earn a steady income while completing your education.

Resume Writing Tips For Fresh Graduates From The Philippines

Writing a resume as a fresh graduate from the Philippines can be daunting – so we are going to provide a sample template that even those with no work experience can easily use. But before you dive into it and plug in your own details, we should first understand what exactly makes a resume stand out from the rest.

As a fresh graduate, chances are you probably have little to no professional work experience outside of your on-the-job training. So, what can you do to make your resume catch a recruiter’s eye?

resume format doc philippines

Do you go for a creative resume with vibrant colors? Do you go the minimalist route in your design? What are the skills that you should highlight? Should you add your hobbies and interests?

Naturally, all these questions (and more) are things that we need to consider. However, there are certain guidelines that we can follow that is universally proven to be effective for resume building.

With that said, here are important tips specifically for Filipino fresh graduates when it comes to creating their resumes:

Highlight Your Most Notable Skills

Because you have no experience, it’s better that you highlight your talents and skills. Also, you shouldn’t just highlight the same skills for each application.

Instead, you should do research on the company you’re applying for and the job description. Afterward, cater your skills to highlight the needs of the job description and the company.

For example, you’re quite good at cooking. Surely, that’s an impressive skill in itself. However, if you’re applying for a data entry job, do you think that’s relevant?

As such, you need to strategically assess what skills would be required for the job you’re applying for. So, if we’re talking about data entry, then your skills can include: “words per minute”, “excellent typing skills”, “proficient with Microsoft Office tools”, and much more.

In summary, when highlighting skills, here’s a little checklist you can go back to:

  • Check the job description
  • Highlight skills that cater to the job description
  • Think about how you can relate your skills to the job objectives.

Include achievements related to the job position you’re applying for

Even with no experience, there’s a high chance that we’ve got some achievements when we were studying. Moreover, recall all the clubs that you’ve joined, extra-curricular activities, or volunteer work.

Once you’ve listed them down, think about how these achievements relate to the position. Don’t just put everything there in the hopes of “beefing” up your resume.

For example, if the job you’re applying for is a call center agent position, you can include achievements or awards related to communication, team building, or leadership skills.

Let’s say you’ve joined an organization in college. And, in that org, you managed to get a position as one of the officers. That already shows that you have leadership abilities and know how to work with a team.

But, what if you didn’t necessarily get any “achievements” when you were in school?

Generally, you don’t need to include academic achievements. So, what else can you put in this part of your resume?

The simple solution – Don’t include your achievements! Clearly, having achievements is a big bonus to your resume. However, you don’t need to force anything onto your resume.

With the amount of resumes recruiters need to go through on a daily basis, chances are that they’ll only take a glance. According to an article from Career. Mercury, recruiters spend an average of 7 seconds when reviewing a resume.

So, you don’t have to worry about filling up your resume with everything you can think of. Again, just highlight your strengths and cater them to the position.

Cater your resume for specific job positions/companies

As we’ve discussed earlier, it’s better to cater your resume to meet the specific requirements of a company or job position. Thus, you can’t just create one resume and send that to every company that you apply for.

There are several reasons why this is beneficial for you as an applicant.

It shows recruiters that you’ve done research on the company beforehand. Next, even if you’re applying for the same job in different companies, there will be cases where the job descriptions would be different.

More importantly, it emphasizes your employer’s needs. Recruiters want to know how a candidate will help them achieve their objectives.

Focusing on your most relevant abilities and accomplishments demonstrates to them that you are thinking about their needs, not just what the position can provide for you.

Don’t be afraid to include your hobbies/passions

Aside from your technical and soft skills, most companies would want to check if you’re a fit for the company’s work environment. Besides your work, what you do in your free time can actually give recruiters a grasp of who you really are as a person.

Oftentimes, applicants have “scripted” answers to common interview questions . However, recruiters can generally see right through this.

So, it’s better to put your hobbies and passions on your resume so you have something to talk about. It’s natural to get nervous during interviews, but, for most people, talking about their passions and hobbies comes naturally.

Review the things you put on your resume

Don’t get caught off guard if an interviewer asks questions about you based on your resume. During an interview, recruiters would scan your resume to see anything that stands out and then asks you about it.

For example, if you’ve written down that you’ve had job experiences in four call centers, there’s a good chance that you’ll be asked about it.

Meanwhile, for those with no experience, interviewers would often go through your skills and achievements. So, be sure that you’ve reviewed them so that you can expound on the things you’ve written down.

Take the things that you’ve put on your resume as an opportunity to expound on key aspects of yourself. If you do, then you don’t have anything to worry about during your next interview.

Resume Samples For No Experience Fresh Grads

In the example below, we can see an easy-to-read resume. It’s minimalistic in its design and focused on its intent. At a glance, recruiters can identify which section contains the applicant’s personal info and which contains skills related to the technical aspect of the job.

Fresh Graduate Resume Sample

Due to the lack of work experience, it’s important to highlight other aspects such as your skills, achievements, and training/seminars that you’ve attended. Additionally, you can also include the clubs and organizations you’ve joined during your academic years as well.

Keep in mind that you can easily highlight your role in an organization or club and relate it to the position you are applying for. Furthermore, it can show that you excel in soft skills or that you’re team-oriented and already know how to work with a group.

Here’s another example resume that uses an even more minimalist design.

resume format doc philippines

As you can see, the resume doesn’t have anything fancy on it. It’s simply just text and some lines to separate parts of the resume. However, this is still a good example of a resume because it’s straightforward and has an easy flow.

Recruiters can easily skim through the resume as the information is already top to bottom. This is also easier for the eyes. Additionally, the resume also provides ample details regarding previous job experience.

Although the applicant could have added some soft skills there such as communication skills. Moreover, Microsoft Office applications may also be omitted since this could be considered common knowledge and a minimum requirement for most job applications.

Finally, something that you need to consider when handing out your resumes is to study everything that you’ve put on there. Because chances are the interviewers would ask you questions based on what’s on your resume.

Interviewers would probably ask basic questions such as “tell me about yourself” or “why do you want to work for this company”. Those are questions you can easily prepare for, but the bulk of the technical aspect of an interview would clearly depend on the skills you placed.

Now that you’ve got an idea of how to build a simple resume, it’s time to take the next step after graduating – applying for a job!

  • Chronological resume organizes the information like LinkedIn does – from the latest position to the first one, with education, interests, and additional info listed later. It’s the most popular resume format, preferred for recruiters. Go for it unless you’re entry-level or changing careers.
  • Functional resume keeps the focus on your skills and experience, rather than employment history. It’s the go-to choice for candidates with employment gaps and those without much hands-on work experience.
  • Combination resume takes the best of both worlds and allows you to spice up your “dry” employment history with some juicy details about your skill set and achievements. Startups and edgier companies may prefer this.

Create a Compelling Summary

A resume summary is a two-sentence statement highlighting your key qualifications, skills, and value proposition for the role. It sits in the header area, right after your name and contact details. Think of it as a teaser to a movie — you should put your most marketable skills upfront to immediately capture the hiring manager’s attention and get them interested in reading the full copy.

Add Work History

List your employers in reverse chronological order. Each entry should include the employment date, job title, company name, key responsibilities, and achievements listed in bullet format . Include 3 to 5 bullet points for each position. Don’t get long-winded — your resume must fit into one page.

Include Marketable Resume Skills

With skills-based hiring on the rise, you must demonstrate specific competencies rather than just tenure and educational credentials. Showcase your best hard and soft skills in a featured sidebar section, plus your resume summary and work experience entries.

List Education

Unless you are a recent graduate, don’t dwell on this section too much. Simply list all your degrees (highest to lowest), the name of your educational institution, and your graduation date. But if you’re still in college, you can also add your GPA , dean’s list , or research .

What's the ideal length for a resume? (Plus a template for creating your own)

The Department of Labor and Employment, or DOLE, is  optimistic about the country's employment outlook this year. The large number of job openings in January 2024 and the  improved employment rate in 2023 are the main factors contributing to this optimistic forecast.

This means more opportunities to find work in the country. But how do you increase your chances of landing the job you want? The answer is through your resume.

A good resume helps you stand out during a job search. It presents your skills, qualifications, and experience in an organized manner. It's also concise, making it easy to go through.

This is important because hiring managers often receive numerous applications for each job opening. With limited time, they need to scan resumes to determine which individuals to invite for an interview.

Read on to discover how to write an effective resume. Here's what we'll cover:

  • How long should a resume be?
  • What's the difference between a resume and a CV?
  • 10 ways to keep your resume concise
  • Conclusion: free template to create an effective resume

How long should a resume be?

The ideal resume length is one or two pages. But this isn't a hard and fast rule. If you need a three-page resume highlighting your relevant experience, go for it. What's important is that you keep it concise.

Here are some factors that affect resume length:

Professional experience

A two-page resume may be appropriate for individuals with extensive work experience. If you've been working in your field for over a decade, it may be difficult to condense your qualifications and relevant experience into a single page.

But if you're an entry-level applicant, such as a recent graduate, a one-page resume may be enough to showcase your qualifications.

Industry norms

Some industries, such as academia or research, may expect longer resumes. Jobs in these fields require specialized knowledge and experience, so a more detailed resume may be necessary.

An example is if you're applying for a research position or a spot in a graduate program. You may need to include your work experience plus details about your research, published work, and grants you received.

In tech and creative fields, one-page resumes often work best. With a creative role, such as a graphic designer, a resume that's concise and visually engaging can capture the attention of hiring managers.

It lets them see your design skills while highlighting your relevant work experience.

Relevance to the position

Tailor resume length based on the relevance of your experience to the job. Prioritize impactful information demonstrating your fit for the role you're applying for. Avoid details that don't relate to the position.

For example, if you're applying for a programmer role, there's no need to include your volunteer work at the local animal shelter, significantly if this might push your resume past one or two pages.

Formatting and readability

Proper formatting helps make your resume concise. Ensure your resume is visually appealing and easy to read by focusing on clarity rather than design. Use formatting techniques to maximize space and keep the document short.

This includes minimizing white space, using a font size between 10- and 12-point, and refraining from adding graphics.

Applicant tracking systems

An applicant tracking system (ATS) may favor resumes between one and two pages. This is because shorter resumes make it easy to identify critical qualifications quickly.

When creating your resume,  incorporate keywords from the job description that the company posted. The ATS is likely to scan for these in resumes, and job seekers with more keywords in their resumes may have a higher chance of securing an interview.

What's the difference between a resume and a CV?

Many use the terms resume and CV interchangeably. While both documents present your qualifications, they differ in several ways. You usually submit a CV for a job application in academia or research.

It may also be a requirement when applying for a scholarship, fellowship, or grant. In contrast, a resume is well-suited for positions in the corporate world and other nonacademic environments. Here's a quick  comparison between a resume and CV :

Although there's no concrete answer to the ideal resume length, a professional summary is usually one or two pages long. A CV, however, could be longer. It may reach 10 pages if you have much experience or accomplishments.

A resume contains information that's relevant to the job for which you're applying. It focuses on the qualifications you have that make you a good fit. A CV also includes the details you add to your resume.

The difference is that a CV is more comprehensive. It provides a detailed account of your educational and professional background.

One page resume on a clipboard

A resume focuses on your competencies. These are the skills and knowledge you have that make you suitable for a job. The focus of a CV is on your academic credentials. It gives an entire history of your educational achievements.

This includes your degrees, certifications, research projects, publications, academic honors, and other accomplishments.

The basic sections of a resume are your contact information,  resume summary , experience, education, and skills. A CV has these and additional sections. CVs often include publications, presentations, honors and awards, and professional affiliations or memberships.

10 ways to keep your resume concise

Here are 10 tips for how to keep your resume concise:

1. Keep the description of each role between 3 to 7 bullet points

Condense your job responsibilities to the most critical tasks that demonstrate your competencies. Prioritize those that are most relevant to your target job. A good strategy is to review the job description and identify the most important duties and responsibilities. This helps you determine which experiences and  skills to highlight on your resum e.

2. Include your most impressive, measurable achievements

Showcase quantifiable accomplishments to demonstrate your impact on previous employers or projects. For example, include revenue growth percentages instead of saying you increased sales.

You can also add completion times to your list of project deliverables. You provide concrete evidence of your abilities and contributions by highlighting these achievements. These show the hiring manager what you could do for their organization.

3. Limit each bullet point to two lines

You may wonder, “How long should each bullet point be on a resume?” In general, make your points no longer than two lines. Craft concise, impactful statements that efficiently convey information. Writing complete sentences is unnecessary, especially in the experience section.

You should start each previous job responsibility with a bullet point with an action verb. Using active language makes your resume more dynamic and engaging. Examples of action verbs are "collaborated," "implemented," "developed," and "organized."

4. Don't include irrelevant hobbies

Hobbies that don't contribute to your professional image take up valuable space on your resume. Instead, make space for career-relevant information, such as your education, skills, and work experience.

As a student, you may have taken up part-time jobs or internships.

If you feel that your activities outside of work would help you get the job, consider mentioning them in your cover letter.

5.  Condense contact information

Keep the contact information section of your resume brief to maintain the ideal resume length.

Only include essential details, such as your name, address, phone number, and professional email address. Make sure the information you provide is accurate and up to date.

The hiring manager may use this to schedule an interview or follow up with you.

A link to your social media pages isn't necessary. But if you have a professional page or a website, you could include a link to it if it would help you get the job. For example, you can add a link to your portfolio if you're applying as a graphic designer.

6. Choose a clean and readable format

Use a clean, professional resume format that makes clever use of space. This means avoiding busy fonts, too many colours, and graphics. These may be eye-catching but distracting.

Use legible fonts and maintain consistent formatting throughout the document. According to Adobe,  popular fonts for resumes include Arial, Times New Roman, Garamond, and Cambria. These are easy to read and look professional whether online or in print.

7. Limit education details

Include only essential education details in your resume. Focus on the highest degree you earned, especially if it's relevant to the job. You don't need to include information about your secondary school education if you have an associate degree or advanced degree, or work experience.

You can omit graduation dates for older degrees to keep the document within the recommended resume length.

8. Optimize white space

White or negative space refers to the empty areas between text, images, and other elements on a document. You should create a clean, organized appearance by incorporating ample white space in your resume.

This makes it easier for hiring managers to read and navigate your resume. It also highlights critical information and sections to help you stand out from other applicants.

White space can also add a sense of balance to your document. This is especially important when you're following a minimalist style. It allows you to break up the text for improved readability.

9. Consider including hyperlinks

Use hyperlinks for your online  professional portfolio or SEEK profile. This allows you to provide additional information without taking up space and reviewing the recommended resume length. Before submitting your resume, double-check that the hyperlinks are live and not broken.

10. Seek feedback from others

Reviewing your resume before sending it to a hiring manager is essential. Check for spelling and grammar errors, and make sure it looks professional.

It's also a good idea to have others review your resume. They provide valuable insights and suggest areas to make your document more concise. This ensures that every piece of information in your resume serves a purpose and contributes to your overall narrative.

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about resumes:

  • What is the recommended length for a resume?   The ideal length for a resume is one or two pages.
  • How does professional experience impact resume length?   The more experience you have, the longer your resume will likely be. While resume length is essential, remember that content is your top priority when creating one.    If you have multiple pages of experience relevant to the job you're applying for, don't be afraid to include them. Just ensure that you've made the document as concise as possible.   To do this, choose a minimalist resumé layout that would accommodate more information than other formats. Cut out filler words and unnecessary details. Write in a straightforward manner that uses short but impactful statements.
  • Are there industry-specific guidelines for resume length?   While the standard length for a resume is one or two pages, there are industries where a longer resume is appropriate. If you're applying for a job in a highly technical field, academia, or research, it's common to have a resume over two pages long.    These industries often require applicants to provide detailed information about their education, past work, and technical skills. This is also true if you're applying for high-level executive positions, which generally require more than 10 years of experience in the Philippines.   There are also industries where a short resume could be more effective. In highly competitive marketing or creative industries, a one-page resume could be impactful because it encourages you to prioritize the most relevant information and present it in a visually appealing way.    Short resumes are more straightforward to skim and digest, which is advantageous in fast-paced industries where recruiters have limited time to review applications.   Regardless of these guidelines, remember that the quality of your resume should always take precedence. It's crucial to adhere to the recommended resume length.    But it's even more critical to ensure that your resume showcases the relevant skills and experience that make you suitable for the job.
  • How should I tailor my resume length based on the job I'm applying for?   Consider the specific requirements and expectations of the role. If you're applying for a position that requires a high level of technical expertise or extensive experience, it may be appropriate to provide more detailed information and expand your resume to two or more pages.    On the other hand, if you're applying for a job in a fast-paced industry or a company that values concise and impactful communication, stick to a one-page or two-page resume.
  • Is there an ideal resume length for applicant tracking systems (ATS)?   There's no single ATS that companies use to filter applicant resumes. This means there's no specific resume length you should follow to guarantee that your resume can get past the system.    However, the consensus is to keep your resume to two pages or less. This encourages you to include only the most relevant details in your document.
  • What are the formatting considerations for maximizing resume space?   Choose a minimalist layout that includes more information in less space. Use clean and easy-to-read fonts, and stick to 10-, 11-, and 12-point font sizes. Set the margins to half an inch on all sides.   Make sure to separate the sections of your resume with clear headings. Use bullet points to list your duties and accomplishments in each position. Write short statements to make your document easier to read.
  • How can recent graduates optimize their resume length?   Recent graduates could increase resume length by highlighting their academic accomplishments and relevant coursework in the education section. If you don't have work experience, you could still add this section and list your internship and volunteer work.    As a student, you may have participated in extracurricular activities at the university. You could use this to fill the extra space and make your one-page resume more appealing to employers. If you're a recent graduate, learning  how to write a resume with no work experience  will help you find your next role.
  • When should you use a CV instead of a resume?   You may need to submit a CV instead of a resume if you're applying for work in academic and research fields where extensive documentation of qualifications is necessary. Before you  create a CV or resume for a specific position, check the job posting. The employer may have specified which document they prefer.
  • Can a resume be longer than two pages?   Yes, a resume could be longer than two pages, depending on the circumstances. If you have an extensive work history or multiple certifications, you may exceed the recommended resume length. But remember only to do this if you cannot fit your competencies into a two-page resume.
  • What are the key differences between a resume and a CV? A resume focuses on your skills, education, and experience that make you a good fit for a specific job. It's shorter than a CV, with a typical length of one or two pages. In contrast, a CV could be three to 10 pages long.   A CV is more comprehensive than a resume. Most of the information in it focuses on your educational background. This is because a CV is often a requirement when applying for a research or academic position, a scholarship, or a grant.

Resume Sample for OJT Students in the Philippines

The good thing about applying for an internship is that you’re not expected to have work experience. Still, your OJT resume should be a cut above the rest, so you’ll be accepted by the company you hope would hire you as an employee in the future.

Here’s one good example of an internship resume of a college student who seeks an OJT as a graphic designer:

resume sample philippines 11

This is an outstanding and very coherent resume from top to bottom. Everything written on it is very much relevant to the competencies and traits required of graphic designers.

The resume header has links to the candidate’s LinkedIn profile and personal website. Potential employers will find them useful in checking her graphic design abilities.

The OJT resume is also sprinkled with important keywords like “detail-oriented” and “completing projects on spec and on deadline.” The education section mentions extra-curricular activities related to the student’s layout and design experience in her school publications.

Even though her work experience has nothing to do with graphic design, the candidate found a way to relate it to the field. She highlights her ability to create “visually stunning” cake designs and provide “cheerful, courteous” customer service—both of which are important skills for graphic designers.

Pinoy recruiters of Reddit, does this CV/resume template look good to you?

I'm trying to optimize my CV and I found this old Reddit post of an American recruiter sharing their preferred resume template.

I took a look at the word document and I find it very plain and compact, but based on the comments it seems quite effective.

I'm just thinking, our local recruiters might have a different preference, and the format might not be palatable to Filipino recruiters. Or our resume-reading softwares probably work differently?

I have a number of pretty templates from Canva but of course, effectiveness trumps aesthetics.

What do you think of the template? Any insight or resume tips would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!
