There’s a growing need for robots that can perform difficult tasks accurately. In this arena, LimX Dynamics has showcased its humanoid CL-1 robot that can successfully lift heavy objects. The robot can help around the house, and perform multiple tasks, according to the company. In a recent video shared by LimX Dynamics, the robot is seen loading heavy objects among shelves in a simulated warehouse. In the three-minute clip, CL-1 is seen adopting multiple postures, including loaded deep squat, loaded stand from a squat, loaded lift, and loaded walking.

Humanoid CL-1 robot performed multiple tasks

The robot was able to perform these tasks after the company enhanced whole-body motion control and real-time perceptive loco-manipulation with hardware upgrades. The humanoid robot can now filter out unpredictable external disturbances, re-locate the target object, autonomously replan the task, and adjust its position to place the object at the designated location. Now, the robot maintains stable performance during multiple mobile operations, addressing the challenges of long-duration work tasks.

CL-1 robot achieved dynamic stair climbing

The company earlier claimed that CL-1 is one of the few humanoid robots around the world that achieves dynamic stair climbing based on real-time terrain perception. As an ideal testing platform for Embodied AI, CL-1 has taken a significant step forward to become the next widely used intelligent terminal besides cars and smartphones in the future. Through closing the loop between real-time perception, gait planning, and locomotion control, and hardware and data stream, CL-1 dynamically completed tasks such as climbing stairs, walking down slopes, and, locomoting indoors and outdoors in different environments.

LimX Dynamics claimed that it has developed a real-time, distributed operation system, including three key parts. Integrated development tool chain greatly reduces coding complexity and improves the efficiency of algorithm development.

Real-time data transmission makes accurate operation of the robot possible. Decentralized operation of the nodes secures a balanced computing power, achieving a more flexible, efficient, and stable system. It also supports a wide range of programming languages to maximize the diverse technical requirements.

LimX Dynamics claimed to have mastered the leading technologies including model predictive control, reinforcement learning, high frequency torque control.

The company claims that it has comprehensive grasp of the robot’s intrinsic physical movement capabilities. Based on the terrain information centered on the robot’s body and its relative position, combined with the real-time state of the robot including its location, position, orientation, joint angles, etc.

LimX demos latest generation of CL-1 humanoid

LimX Dynamics upgraded the physical and functional capabilities of its CL-1 humanoid robot. Since debuting the robot in late 2023 , the company has been busy teaching the robot to work in a warehouse setting.

The video above demonstrates the CL-1 picking up and moving heavy objects throughout a mock warehouse. The company said the video shows the humanoid performing the tasks in a single, unedited cut of the video.

LimX said the robot uses real-time perception to understand the world around it, along with full-body coordinated motion to lift and place heavy objects. The robot is not equipped with a human-like hand, but it uses simple paddle end effectors to grip and control a tote or box.

The robot also demonstrates how it can react to a real-time interruption when acquiring an item by reevaluating the scene, replanning, and then continuing on its mission.

Putting humanoids to work

The Robot Report has tracked the milestones of all the major humanoid developers over the years. The earliest videos were basic walking demos. But things have drastically changed over the last year or so.

Agility Robotics Digit was named the 2024 RBR50 Robot of the Year , as it matured into a robust solution and the company opened a new RoboFab factory to begin large-scale production. In July 2024, Agility Robotics was the first company to sell a humanoid robot for production to a paying customer.

Several other companies, like Tesla , Figure AI , and Sanctuary AI have produced extensive videos illustrating the nimbleness of hand-eye coordination with five-fingered robot hands grasping and controlling objects. Warehousing and manufacturing will likely be the early markets for humanoids .

Amazon is an investor in Agility Robotics, Hyundai owns Boston Dynamics and many of the worldwide automotive companies are looking to partner with humanoid robot developers as they continue to mature.

Humanoid robots are a bad idea

Multiple companies are now using robots that walk and talk like human beings. what could go wrong.

In case you hadn’t noticed, humanoid robots have joined the workforce. 

An evergreen staple of science fiction, autonomous AI-driven machines with feet, legs that bend at the knee, torsos, arms with hands and fingers, all topped with a head are now being deployed in real workplaces. 

Specifically:

  • Amazon is piloting the use of Agility Robotics’ humanoid robot, Digit, in logistics operations — mainly for picking up empty bins and returning them to where they can be filled again with merchandise. 
  • Mercedes-Benz is collaborating with Apptronik to explore the use of the Apollo humanoid robot in manufacturing. (The robots deliver assembly kits to production lines.) 
  • BMW is testing Figure AI’s humanoid robot, Figure 01, at its factory in Spartanburg, SC. They’re used for moving components onto jigs and making corrections to component placements. (Figure recently unveiled its  Figure 02 robot , which is even more humanoid than the first one.)
  • Hyundai, through its subsidiary Boston Dynamics, is working on deploying the Atlas humanoid robot in its manufacturing plants. The aim is to scale up its use for industrial applications.
  • Tesla developed the Optimus humanoid robot and has already deployed two of them in a factory, mainly for sorting battery cells. 
  • UBTECH Robotics’ Walker robot is being used in two Chinese car factories for a wide variety of repetitive manufacturing tasks, such as placing car logos on vehicles  and performing quality inspections.

For now, these robots are solutions in search of problems — or, rather, they’re being used for menial work of value nowhere near the price of the robots. But companies expect their roles to grow .

Why humanoid?

Non-humanoid robots have been used in factories for decades. Industrial robots are highly capable, and nowadays increasingly programmed with generative AI capabilities. Tesla’s factory is a marvel of robotic engineering, as you can see from  this video . 

If non-humanoid robots are so capable, why would Tesla and other companies introduce human-shaped robots? 

The most common reason given for why robots should be the size, general shape and have parts designed after human body parts is that our environments, buildings and vehicles are designed for people — so basing the design of robots on the human body means they can open doors, sit in chairs, walk up stairs and generally operate in any place or situation designed for people. 

This argument sounds persuasive at first, but doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. Workspaces like factories are designed for both humans and equipment. Factory floors, for example, are mainly designed for wheels — they tend to be perfectly hard, flat and smooth. A rolling robot would be far more efficient than one that requires a supercomputer to enable bipedal walking. Other robot designs can lift vastly heavier weights, move much faster and have profoundly better dexterity than humanoid robots do. 

If the main justification for humanoid robots is so they can operate in human-centric environments, then what’s the purpose of the Digit robot’s big white eyes that blink. Why do Figure and Tesla robots need heads that are almost exactly the same size and shape of human heads? Why do these robots tend to have exactly four fingers and one thumb? 

The human body and mind were designed by evolution over 2.5 million years during the Paleolithic Era, not for factory work, but for persistence hunting and general survival in the wilderness based on social cooperation, food sharing, and the use of stone tools and fire. 

Why design factory robots based on the bodies of stone age cave men?

It’s clear their designers have an unexplained desire to make robots that make people feel that they’re kind of human. To have this effect, engineers are working overtime to make robots with lifelike faces and to create generative AI personalities that appear emotionally responsive and emotionally intelligent. 

The problem with humanoid robots

Humanoid robots have a psychological effect on people that’s very different from other robots. 

When humanoid robots display human-like emotions and behaviors, people are more likely to attribute mental states to them that they don’t have. The phenomenon is called “cognitive anthropomorphism.”

Specifically, a  study conducted by scientists at the University of Genova and the Italian institute of technology  found that while non-humanoid robots are perceived as objects, humanoid robots are often perceived as “human-like” or “social agents” — not objects. 

When people make eye contact with other people, the act elicits a psychophysiological connection or bonding response.  Research by scientists at Tampere University in Finland  found that eye contact with robots elicits the same response in people. 

Yet another study  conducted at IRCCS Centro Neurolesi Bonino Pulejo  in Messina, Italy, found that robots programmed for “emotional intelligence” can evoke empathy in people, “especially when they exhibit anthropomorphic traits.”

And look at the crazy, unthinking claims some robot makers are saying out loud. 

Xiaolong Wang, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego involved in basically  teaching humanoid robots to dance and express themselves  through body language said: “Through expressive and more human-like body motions, we aim to build trust and showcase the potential for robots to co-exist in harmony with humans.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he wants Tesla’s Optimus robot to be “good looking” and for people to think of it as a “friend” to which they “get quite attached.” (He also envisioned a future where  20 billion humanoid robots like Optimus live and work amongst humans .)

The main difference with humanoid robots is their effect on humans, not their efficiency as tools.

Humanoid robots that talk, perceive social and emotional cues, elicit empathy and trust, trigger psychological responses through eye contact and who trick us into the false belief that they have inner thoughts, intentions and even emotions create for humanity what I consider a real problem.

Our response to humanoid robots is based on delusion. Machines — tools, really — are being deliberately designed to hack our human hardwiring and deceive us into treating them as something they’re not: people.

In other words, the whole point of humanoid robots is to dupe the human mind, to mislead us into having the kind of connection with these machines formerly reserved exclusively for other human beings. 

Why are some robot makers so fixated on this outcome? Why isn’t the goal instead to create robots that are perfectly designed for their function, rather than perfectly designed to trick the human mind?

Why isn’t there a movement to make sure robots do  not  elicit false emotions and beliefs. What’s the harm in preserving our intuition that a robot is just a machine, just a tool? Why try to route around that intuition with machines that trick our minds, coopting or hijacking our human empathy?

What’s the motivation for wanting tools to become members of human societies and families?

My guess is that we all grew up on science fiction where android robots were commonplace, and some want to realize that vision. Or they feel humanoid robots are preordained and inevitable, so we might as well get on with it. 

My fear is that if robots are basically people, then robot makers may feel like gods in creating them.

Whatever the motivation, I don’t buy the justification that humanoid robots are needed to operate in environments designed for people. And I would call on robot engineers to re-think their impulses and examine their motivations as to why they want to build machines designed to delude.

Robots are just machines. And giving a machine two legs, 10 fingers and a face doesn’t make it a person. So why try to trick people into believing it is?

Tesla is paying workers Rs 4,000 an hour to train its Optimus humanoid robots how to walk

Tesla is taking significant steps in its quest to develop humanoid robots, known as Optimus, by actively recruiting workers to help gather essential data. The company, led by Elon Musk, is offering up to $48 an hour for roles that involve collecting movement data to train these AI-powered robots, which are designed to handle tasks in Tesla’s factories.

The job listings, available on LinkedIn, Indeed, and Tesla’s website, describe positions for “data collection operators.” These workers will wear motion-capture suits and virtual reality headsets to simulate the movements the robots will eventually perform. As per the job listing, applicants must be able to walk for over at least seven hours a day. Applicants also need to be between 5’7″ and 5’11″ in order to operate the motion-capture suits that Tesla will be providing. The pay for this physically gruelling job will be between $25.25 and $48 per hour, which roughly translates to Rs 2000-4000.

The Vision Behind Optimus The Optimus project, which Tesla introduced in 2021, is part of a broader push toward automation in industries where labour shortages and the need for efficiency have become increasingly urgent. Tesla envisions these robots taking over tasks that are considered unsafe, repetitive, or just plain boring for human workers.

Earlier this year, Tesla shared a video showing the early stages of this work. In the video, employees in motion-capture suits mimic basic movements like lifting and placing objects, while nearby, the Optimus robots mirror these actions using real items. The robots were also seen practising other tasks on their own, such as walking and folding laundry.

Despite the excitement around the project, the road hasn’t been entirely smooth. When Tesla first unveiled a prototype of the robot, called Bumble C, in 2022, the response was lukewarm. Some experts in the field were underwhelmed, expecting more from a company known for pushing the envelope. However, Tesla has continued to develop the project, and recent reports suggest that the robots are beginning to show promise, including successfully performing autonomous tasks in Tesla facilities.

Challenges and Competition Ahead Elon Musk has high hopes for the Optimus robots, seeing them as a key part of Tesla’s future. He has even speculated that these robots could help propel Tesla to a staggering $25 trillion market valuation, far beyond its current worth. Musk imagines a world where billions of these robots are in use, not just in factories but in homes and other industries, too.

However, Tesla isn’t the only player in the game. Other companies are also racing to develop AI-powered robots. For instance, Figure, a robotics firm backed by big names like Microsoft and Jeff Bezos, has already secured significant funding and struck deals to bring its robots into real-world applications, such as assisting in BMW’s car manufacturing.

This competition highlights the tough road ahead for Tesla. Developing robots at scale is a complex and costly endeavour. Experts have pointed out that gathering enough data to refine these robots could require massive investments, and even then, there’s no guarantee of success.

Tesla’s Optimus project is ambitious, and while the company has made progress, the journey to making these robots a staple in industries worldwide is just beginning. It’s a bold move, but whether it pays off remains to be seen.

The video shows how the new operator will have the ability to control both robots independently. While one is being used, the other one is protected by a big shield. The video also reveals a weakness, as it seems like the shield doesn't protect the robot's full body.

Unfortunately, the video doesn't include important details like what happens when one of the robots is killed or if there's any other ability that the new operator will be able to use. We also don't have information regarding the operator's speed and health traits.

The community didn't take long to react to the leaked videos. Even the popular YouTuber Ricky Berwick , who suffers from a physical disability, replied to the post.

Overall, the replies have been mixed. While the majority of reactions revolved around the operator's wheelchair and how they would adapt to maps that aren't " wheelchair accessible ", others simply hated Ubisoft's decision to add more inclusivity to the game.

Regardless of anyone's opinion, Ubisoft adding a wheelchair operator this way is brilliant. While giving more visibility to people who must use a wheelchair, Ubisoft is also adding a new mechanic to Rainbow Six Siege that is completely different from anything previously seen in the game.

Robots capable of performing human-like tasks have so far been relegated to laboratories, factories, and captivating YouTube demos. But Unitree is readying its G1 humanoid robot for mass production with a $16,000 price tag that somehow feels both expensive and reasonable for a robot that looks this capable, as spotted by New Atlas .

The Unitree G1 is an upgraded and production-ready version of the H1 humanoid bot the Chinese company debuted only a year ago. Powered by an unnamed “8-core high-performance CPU,” the G1 features 23 degrees of freedom through powered joints on its arms, legs, and torso. The robot can jump, walk at a top speed of over 4.4mph, and even climb stairs littered with construction debris. How well it can handle stairs cluttered with random shoes and kids toys remains to be seen.

The stumps on the ends of the H1’s arms have been replaced with three-fingered hands on the G1, which have been demonstrated to be dexterous enough to solder wires, handle delicate objects, and even flip foods in a frying pan. The robot’s LED-adorned head hides a vision system based on a Livox Mid-360 lidar camera and an  Intel RealSense D435 depth camera, allowing the G1 to see the world in 3D.

Standing around just 4.3 feet tall, the robot can fold down even smaller for easier transport and storage. However, at a little over 77 pounds with its two-hour 9,000mAh battery pack attached, Unitree’s G1 definitely isn’t lightweight.

Before the debut of its humanoid robots, Unitree was best known for its quadruped robots designed to be similarly capable to Boston Dynamics’ Spot, only much smaller and cheaper. While Spot can be purchased for $74,500 , the Unitree Go2 starts at $1,600. Boston Dynamics hasn’t revealed how much its Atlas humanoid robots cost, and while Elon Musk has claimed Tesla’s Optimus Gen 2 robot will cost “much less than $20,000,” Unitree’s G1 will potentially be one of the first capable humanoid robots you can bring home.

Unitree hasn’t revealed exactly when the production-ready version of the G1 will actually be available, but when it is, potential customers shouldn’t expect it to stroll into the kitchen and cook breakfast right out of the box. The humanoid is designed to learn through imitation using the company’s Unitree Robot Unified Large Model (UnifoLM), and its initial appeal will be as an affordable humanoid platform for conducting robotics research — not as a real-life version of Rosey the Robot from The Jetsons .
