In the spring, summer, and fall I also volunteer at Gaining Ground (GG), a non-profit that grows organic produce to donate to food pantries, shelters, and meal programs. When I volunteered at a local food pantry, it struck me that recipients receive mostly canned and packaged food. I think it is important that people in need receive fresh fruits and vegetables, and I enjoy the physical work of weeding, harvesting, cleaning, and packing produce.

Soon after I began volunteering at GG, my rabbi gave a sermon about the working conditions of tomato farmers in Florida. (It reminded me of Grapes of Wrath, and I couldn’t believe inhumane practices continue.) Her sermon motivated me to support the Coalition of Immokalee Workers by distributing postcards urging Trader Joe’s and Stop & Shop to only buy tomatoes from farms that agree to fair wages and human rights. Both chains have now agreed, showing that a little effort by many people makes a difference.

Last, I believe a story is the best way to explain my “behind-the-scenes” leadership. At the annual nighttime football game, one of my soccer teammates (not someone I hang with) was drunk. When our principal came over to the bleachers, my teammate’s friends fled. Concerned that my teammate would fall and hurt herself, I brought her outside the stadium, called her parents, and waited with her until they came — without worrying about social retribution. Despite getting grounded, she thanked me for my help.

A few groups began to turn back, but as some of my group members began to turn I held them up. “Look guys, we’re more than halfway finished with this already, and I don’t know about all of you but I’m going all the way to the end,” I said as I walked past them and continued to collect trash from the ground. After moving a little ways down the road, I heard the crunch of gravel behind me getting louder and I looked up to see my original group plus a few extra people had come to help me finish the job. By refusing to give up on the task at hand, I motivated my peers to accomplish what we had set out to do, and I opened their eyes to the importance of never leaving something unfinished. In my opinion, a job should never be left half finished. In this situation, I inspired my fellow students to do more than they had the drive to do of their own accord. This is a characteristic of a leader, and a testimony to my leadership qualities. Earlier this school year, I was nominated to attend a meeting at Giovanni’s composed of 15 leaders selected from every school in the NIC-10 Conference. This meeting consisted of a brilliant speaker who not only explained in detail what about my personality made me more prone to holding a position of leadership, but also had us engage in team-building activities that required one person to take charge of the rest of the group and direct, or to share the leadership equally. This deviated depending on the activities, which varied from working one on one with another student to separate each other while each of us held one end of two strings that formed an X in between us (I hope this concept can be understood without a physical example), or simply having to build the tallest structure out of nothing but plastic straws, their wrappers, and two pieces of tape. My partner and I were successful in separating ourselves from one another, which many groups found “impossible”, and although my team did not build the highest structure we competed closely with the other groups and worked well together. This, I believe is one of the most important parts of being a leader; knowing when not to take command and boss your peers around, and when to allow your entire team, group, etc. to share the leadership in order to more effectively achieve a goal. Being a leader is important; however I find that my ability to be a part of a team is equally demonstrative of my leadership qualities More often than not, the true ability of a leader is seen not in his actions while holding an elected or nominated leadership position, but in his actions during normal, everyday interactions with his peers. In the halls of Hononegah and in the surrounding community, I refuse to tolerate deplorable actions, most commonly bullying. I will admit that to my knowledge Hononegah is a relatively safe place for its students and that I have never seen an exceedingly cruel, unnecessary case of bullying. Despite this, it is still important to stand up for those who may not have the courage or force of will to stand up for themselves. I do so whenever the opportunity presents itself, and am often the moral compass amongst my group of friends who from time to time find humor in cracking jokes at the expense of other. A true leader does not fall in line with his friends, especially when he believes what they are doing is wrong. As a leader I know that it is vital to stop them and say, “Guys, knock it off, that kid does not deserve to be picked on just because you don’t like (for example) the way he dresses.” I believe firmly that everyone is entitled to live their lives the way that they wish to, and in saying a simple statement like this you not only stand out amongst your friends, you also gain their respect. A true leader will drive people to become more, and over the years many of my friends have become much more benevolent people. I am very proud of this, and I believe that this is the single most important ethic to be held by a teenage leader. You mustn’t adopt your friends ways of thinking; by staying true to your values and being a leader in situations such as the one above, you will be respected as a friend and show your capability of leading, which I have done countless times throughout my high school career. In closing, I hope that my abilities as a leader have become apparent through my actions. A true leader will never leave a job half-finished, will realize when to step forward and lead or when to stand strong as a part of a team, and will stay true to his values and be a leader in morality as well as a leader in accomplishing a goal. I possess all of these qualities and will continue to exercise and expand upon them as I gain more significant leadership positions in life. I hope that you will strongly consider accepting me into the National Junior Honor Society, because I fit the criteria as an involved, intelligent, and more than capable leader. Once, when we both went to shovel up the last slice of pie, she laughed, and said, “ noblesse oblige .” She often spoke French, a Louisiana French foreign yet familiar to me. I didn’t think to ask what she’d meant. Did she think I was noble? Was that why I got to scarf down the last of the cherry pie?

Ma-Maw died the summer before I entered high school. I missed her terribly, long after my parents sold her house. Receiving her redirected mail felt like a blow. So many newsletters from Friends of the New Orleans Public Library! Since I loved books as much as Ma-Maw, I opened these up. Inside, I read about a partnership program, Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR). They needed in-person volunteers to tutor second- and third-graders in reading.

Before I knew it, I was cracking open vocabulary books twice a week with a kid named Harper. When I wasn’t tutoring, I was lesson planning, going over Harper’s writing journal, and scouring shelves for more early reader books. This got me thinking about literacy in New Orleans. 39% of high school students my age have the reading level of a 5 th grader—or worse. Harper lived in a part of town that didn’t even have bookstores. Would she keep up her reading once the tutoring was over, despite the odds? I also thought about representation and accessibility. If Harper had more books about people like her, and if those books were all over the place, and easy to take home, would things change?

Due to this newfound interest in advocating for literacy, I decided to build a Free Little Library (FLL). To do so, I needed help. That spring, I founded a school club, Reading the World, and convinced 8 members to join. Together, we dismantled one of Ma-Maw’s kitchen cabinets and incorporated other used materials to build an upcycled stand that could fit 20 books.

Next, we got in touch with the program Read for Color, which helps make BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other diverse and marginalized voices heard. I believe their initiative parallels our own, which is to provide a diversity of voices through language itself. Our FLL features books in Cajun French and Creole and works in translation. With permission, we installed the FLL outside Ma-Maw’s old home. For its inauguration, our club invited the local organizations Youth Empowerment Project, One Book One New Orleans, and Read in Color. We plan to collaborate with these groups next year.

Now a sophomore, I’ve continued literacy advocacy by volunteering at Alliance Française events. This has given me new ideas about how to run Reading the World. I’ve added monthly book club events. Furthermore, every club member tutors a STAIR student. Finally, we’ll visit local senior homes at Thanksgiving and Christmas and read to the residents.

Ma-Maw would be happy to hear I won the L’Union Française’s Prix d’Excellence this year. She’d be even more thrilled to see how I’ve shared her love of reading with my community. Now I understand noblesse oblige : if you believe you are someone of noble character, then you must act accordingly. This NHS motto was easy for Ma-Maw to follow. She gave everything and led by example. I plan to follow in her footsteps. It would be an immense honor to do so through the National Honor Society.

Everyday Pillars of NJHS

Everyday scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship by nara lee.

Whether or not your school has a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, I share this memo to illustrate the universality of National Junior Honor Society values and how they can fit into each student’s educational journey, regardless of a student’s membership status.

No two educational journeys are the same. Some may look similar, but taking certain courses, course loads, participating in specific activities, and achieving coveted honors and prizes do not define values. While we believe in the value and power of recognition, the pillars of the National Honor Societies are not limited to student members alone. National recognition programs like the National Junior Honor Society strive to place a much-needed emphasis and spotlight on whole-person growth in school settings.

National Junior Honor Society membership is invitation-only and a specific honor. But Everyday Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship are shared values of schools, communities, and families.

Everyday Scholarship is a commitment to learning and growing on an educational path. It means making the most of the educational opportunities provided and seeking out learning, not only in school or similar settings, but also personally. Everyday Scholarship doesn’t require a minimum GPA—but it does require effort. More importantly, it stems from a desire to contribute to this world in a positive way by building on one’s own knowledge, skills, and talent through different experiences.

Everyday Service is seeking out and engaging in meaningful service. It calls for a service mindset , the desire to seek opportunities to help others as well as acts of service . As Honor Society students, many young teens and young adults at local chapters are required to meet minimum service participation requirements for service.

Although hours are important, Everyday Service is seeing a need and fulfilling it voluntarily. Sometimes it’s driven by a passion for a specific cause or people in need. Other times, it’s driven by personal or family need, like taking care of siblings or other family members, or maybe even working part-time to help with family finances.

Everyday Leadership builds on Everyday Service. Service and leadership oftentimes look very similar. Everyday Leadership is carrying oneself with dignity and taking ownership and responsibility for one’s own actions and participation. Being a public speaker, playing quarterback, or having an official title is not required for Everyday Leadership. Everyday Leadership means being an agent—someone who takes action and responsibility—of your own pathway.

Everyday Character is valuing diverse cultures and building relationships that reflect love of self but also concern for others. There are endless attributes to good character: perseverance, respect, integrity, honesty, sacrifice—the list goes on. Good and noble character is a high calling. Oftentimes we don’t “see” character unless there is a public display of self-sacrifice, or more often, a very public mistake. Everyday Character is not about praiseworthy or blameworthy behavior but the personal commitment to ethical and compassionate decision making that affects oneself and others.

Everyday Citizenship is accepting one’s place and role in the community and seeking to understand the concerns and strengths of that community. Community includes but is not limited to neighborhoods, tribes, and local and regional districts. For young people in particular, Everyday Citizenship is an opportunity to be educated about and to demonstrate care for the issues that impact those who are citizens in their shared community. At NASSP, we also believe that “global citizenship” is something that binds all of us together—adults, young people, and people from different nations across borders and boundaries.
