New Lego Movie Based on Pharrell Williams’s Life From Focus Features Set To Hit Theaters

Mail

The next LEGO movie is thinking outside the box. Piece By Piece is coming to theaters and will be inspired by Pharrell Williams’s life. Sounds interesting …

lego make your own movie review

The film is a Focus Features piece, no pun intended, and will be helmed by Director Morgan Neville, an Academy Award winner. Neville and Caitrin Rogers produce the new animated LEGO installment via Tremolo Productions. Williams, Mimi Valdés, and Shani Saxon are producing under Williams’ i am OTHER banner alongside LEGO Group’s Jill Wilfert and Keith Malone, executive producing Piece By Piece. Expect the film to feel like a biopic, albeit through the LEGO art form.

Focus Features say the film is described as “Pharrell set out to tell his story in a way that would set audience’s imaginations free. Developed from his singular vision, PIECE BY PIECE defies genres and expectations to transport audiences into a LEGO world where anything is possible.”

This is a long time coming as Neville said Williams pitched his story as a LEGO film five years ago. “It was one of those rare moments where I knew in a second that this was a journey I wanted to go on,” he said. “I’m so grateful to our partners at Focus Features and at the LEGO Group for their belief in our crazy mission. We assembled an incredible team of creative collaborators to help make a new type of film. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Williams said, “When I had this crazy vision to tell this story through LEGO bricks, I couldn’t have imagined a better partner than Morgan. He is a legend. Grateful that Focus wanted to collaborate with us and I’m honored to share this with the world and bring people into my universe. Building with LEGO bricks encourages us to follow our imagination…who would’ve thought that playing with these toys as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life. It’s proof that anyone else can do it too.”

Piece By Piece is expected to hit theaters on Oct 11.

Book Review: Klutz Lego Make Your Own Movie

“Make Your Own Movie: 100% Official LEGO® Guide to Stop-Motion Animation” by Klutz Press

The book’s promises

This collaboration between Klutz Press and the LEGO Group makes many promises, including how to make not 1 but 10 short films with LEGO bricks and LEGO people called “minifigures,” and tips for finding ideas for your films.

The book delivers on its promises in two ways

  • It gives very clear instructions with engaging photos, teaching you the basics of LEGO stop motion animation in particular and filmmaking in general.
  • Using Klutz Press’ trademark approach, the book includes most of the things you need .  In this case, it includes minifigures, props, and cardboard backgrounds to be used as sets for your movie masterpieces.  You probably have most of the other things you need: lights, a camera (like the one on your phone or tablet), and editing software for your computer or an app on your phone.

The one thing you’ll have to acquire is a baseplate , preferably a 10 inch by 10 inch one. Green for grass, blue for water, grey for roads/sidewalks/indoors.

The text in this book is in short paragraphs with simple words.  Bolded words, text size, boxes in different styles and colors all keep your eyes moving across the pages. Jokes and funny photos keep you smiling. When they’re not the subject of a lesson, beautifully photographed minifigures go about the business of everyday life. They deliver pizzas, trip on bananas, dance with their friends, and run away from the police after stealing gemstones.

In other words, the book is obviously written for children.  This means it’s an excellent option for adults with an interest in filmmaking.

All the basics of filmmaking are included in 64 pages of very sparse text with excellent illustrations and photos.  You’ll learn enough about storytelling, camera angles, framing, set design, and sound effects to figure out if making movies is for you. You won’t have to worry about finding actors or locations, weather, schedules, feeding everyone, or paying anyone.

PROS: My favorite things about this book

Ah, so many things:

  • The cardboard fold-out backgrounds .  Hands-down, this is my favorite thing.  The park scene is my workhorse scenery.  I would buy a duplicate of this book just for the backgrounds.
  • The physical aspects of the book.  It’s spiral-bound and lays flat . The paper makes the pages easy to turn without tearing or getting dirty or smudged.
  • The paper is from trees grown and harvested responsibly .
  • The minifigure head with the nauseous face .  It makes me smile.  I’ve used it for characters about to vomit as well as trumpet and saxophone players.
  • The equal number of male and female minifigs included with the book.
  • The photos give me ideas for things I could build for my own sets.
  • The 10 movie projects .  If you follow along with the instructions, you won’t have to worry about plot or technique because you learn as you go.

nauseous LEGO minifigure

CONS: Things that made my big smile a little smaller

  • There was no mention of the need for a baseplate . If you had no other LEGO sets or pieces whatsoever, it would be difficult and frustrating to make something without one.
  • There was no information on editing .  I understand that everyone’s software is different and that this is an introduction to the subject intended for children, but there are still helpful tips to be had.
  • The fold-out background of the city with minifigures in the background .  I really hate that one, because it would have people standing unnaturally, perfectly still while my action was happening in the foreground.  We’re filming plastic people and that’s not something you see in the natural world, but when so many plastic people refuse to move, it stands out and adds to any mistakes you may have made, drawing attention away from your story.
  • Mini Movie #3 shows you how to make minifigures walk .  I think walking is a irritating and time-consuming thing to film.  I would move that strategy to #10 and have people focus on the other techniques.  That way they will experience more success and joy faster rather than perhaps giving up because of frustration.
  • The slate-themed title card .  It can be used only once if you write on it with anything that would be visible.  If you use pencil and erase multiple times, it would get grimy I would scan it and add information in something like Canva or Photoshop.
  • The opening and closing credits section .  For me it would be too much trouble to create what the book is suggesting.  I would rather type out my credits.

Award Finalist

I always say that LEGO products are an art medium, like oil paint, not a toy, because I’m an adult. But of course they are toys, and this book is considered a toy. In fact, it’s considered an excellent toy because it was a finalist for the TOTY Awards . TOTY: Toy of the Year, is a series of awards given by the Toy Association, a non-profit organization supporting toy safety, toy businesses, and philanthropy, among other things.

This book is for

People who think they might want to make movies will enjoy this introduction to the world of cinema.

Filmmakers frustrated with traditional movie making or without access to cast, crew, costumes, and locations, will enjoy this marvelous introduction to a quick alternative for bringing ideas to life.

Children, since they form the target audience for this book.

Reviews on Amazon and YouTube

On Amazon, it was clear that adults were buying the book for their children and grandchildren.  They would have us believe that the children were enjoying it, although they didn’t give an explanations, examples, or details.  The one bad review I saw was the result of the book having been delivered with damage.

On YouTube, two LEGO fans were disappointed that there were incomplete minifigures.  One of them actually looked at the book and understood the mix-and-match intent but was still unhappy about it.  The other had bought to book, at a steep discount, strictly for the minifigs and accessories, and had no idea what the book was about before he turned on his camera.  He thought perhaps the package had been opened and pieces removed.

A curious detail is that there were two videos that were obviously created by the same person but uploaded to different accounts.  They discuss the book and why children would learn from and enjoy it.

Their two negative points are 1) the lack of a large baseplate and 2) the lack of a designated app, or at least full instructions on how to use one specific app so you can follow along from start to finish on a project.

In conclusion

This book is an irresistible combination: Klutz Press and LEGO.  The former is known for having clear instructions and packaging books with everything you need to learn the skill it’s teaching.  The latter has created a toy (and art medium) system that is versatile, ingenious, and enchanting.

Read it and learn the basics of filmmaking with all the fun and none of the overwhelm of working with a human cast and crew.

Highly recommended for both children and adults.

New lego movie will be a biopic about an oscar-nominated pop artist.

After Universal acquired the LEGO rights back in 2019, the next theatrical LEGO movie will be a biopic about an Oscar-nominated pop artist.

  • The newest LEGO movie will be a feature-length biopic about Pharrell Williams, tracing his life and relationship with LEGO.
  • The film, called Piece by Piece , will be directed by Morgan Neville and produced by Focus Features.
  • Piece by Piece will be the first LEGO-based movie to come out since Universal bought the rights to LEGO films in 2019.

The newest LEGO animated film will take the form of a feature-length biopic about Pharrell Williams. A music talent and coach on the hit NBC series The Voice , Williams is best known for writing the song “Happy.” “Happy” was featured in the film Despicable Me 2 , and later received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Per Variety , the next LEGO-based movie is in development, and it will be a feature-length film about Williams. The film will be titled Piece by Piece and is set to be directed by Morgan Neville. Piece by Piece will trace Williams’ life and relationship playing with the famous toy blocks. Check out the statement from the press release below:

"Uninterested in making a traditional film about his life, Pharrell set out to tell his story in a way that would set audience’s imaginations free. Developed from his singular vision, ‘Piece by Piece’ defies genres and expectations to transport audiences into a LEGO world where anything is possible."

Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski added:

"Pharrell Williams is a true trailblazer whose influence across music, art and fashion continually reshapes global culture with an undeniable sense of joy. In partnering with the inimitable Morgan Neville and the limitless creativity of the LEGO brand his visionary spirit comes to life in a wholly unique and uplifting way that will inspire everyone to dance, to sing, and to use their voice to build the world they want to see, brick by brick, and piece by piece.”

Director Neville also chimed in:

“Five years ago, Pharrell Williams approached me with the idea of helping him tell his story through LEGO animation. It was one of those rare moments where I knew in a second that this was a journey I wanted to go on. I’m grateful to our partners at Focus Features and at the LEGO Group for their belief in our crazy mission. We assembled an incredible team of creative collaborators to help make a new type of film. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Finally, Williams added:

“When I had this crazy vision to tell this story through LEGO bricks, I couldn’t have imagined a better partner than Morgan.

Why Piece by Piece is a Great Idea

The last full-length LEGO Movie released to theaters was in 2019, with The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part . At the end of that year, Warner Bros. lost their five-year contract with LEGO that gave them the film rights to the sequel, its predecessors The LEGO Movie , and offshoot films The LEGO Ninjago Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie . Now, Universal owns the rights to all LEGO-based film content.

10 Franchises That Should Get A LEGO Movie, According To Reddit

Universal owns Focus Features, who will be teaming with Neville and Williams to make Piece by Piece . The unique biopic is prepared for an October 11, 2024 release, making it the first LEGO animation released since Universal acquired the rights to LEGO. While rumors of The LEGO Movie 3 's development circulate, Universal has instead decided to take a risk by choosing the Williams biopic over pushing development on a sequel.

The LEGO Movie 3 is thought to be a live-action and animated hybrid film.

Piece by Piece is an unconventional choice for Universal, but is poised to be a great one. The premise alone is apt to draw on the nostalgia surrounding LEGO, and will likely feature some great music from the “Happy” singer. Furthermore, Neville is the Oscar-winning documentarian behind the music documentary 20 Feet from Stardom , showing his propensity not only for biographical film, but specifically a music biography film. The talents of Williams and Neville can uniquely combine for a fascinating post-Universal LEGO film in Piece by Piece .

Pharrell as Lego in the dawn of man type graphic with gold lego pieces behind him

When Universal Pictures acquired the rights to Lego in 2020, the logical assumption was that another sequel to or reboot of The Lego Movie might be in the works. The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie were big hits for Warner Bros. Pictures, and with unlimited brick-building possibilities, the IP was a potential goldmine if a studio could crack the code again. But the first project to come out of the deal won’t resemble anything like the animated movies of the past. It may not resemble any movie at all.

On Friday, Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate Pharrell Williams announced that he was set to produce Piece By Piece , a new film chronicling his life story — told entirely through Lego brick animation. Documentaries produced by their subjects are a dime a dozen, but Williams is aspiring to create something that both makes sense to the guy who found pop-hit inspiration in Despicable Me 2 (see: “Happy”) and sound absolutely loopy. Focus Features, a subsidiary of Universal, announced that documentarian Morgan Neville ( 20 Feet from Stardom , Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain ) would direct the feature.

“Five years ago, Pharrell Williams approached me with the idea of helping him tell his story through LEGO animation,” Neville said in a statement. “It was one of those rare moments where I knew in a second that this was a journey I wanted to go on. I’m grateful to our partners at Focus Features and at the LEGO Group for their belief in our crazy mission. We assembled an incredible team of creative collaborators to help make a new type of film.”

While The Lego Movie was produced using computer animation that mimicked the stop-motion potential of Lego bricks, filmmakers have dabbled with actual Legos to bring their stories to life over the years. Michel Gondry famously used the bricks to animate The White Stripes “Fell in Love with a Girl” music video in 2002, while a viral Lego brick animator jumped from YouTube to the big screen in 2023 to construct a brief-but-elaborate sequence in Across the Spider-verse . From the sound of it, Williams is a longtime Lego builder who will be living out his dream seeing his career Lego-ified in one will inevitably be one of the most ambitious attempts of Lego animation.

“I’m honored to share this with the world and bring people into my universe,” Williams said in a statement. “Building with LEGO bricks encourages us to follow our imagination… who would’ve thought that playing with these toys as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life. It’s proof that anyone else can do it too.”

Piece By Piece will hit theaters on Oct. 11, 2024.

Movies + LEGO = Stop Motion Fun With Klutz’s ‘LEGO Make Your Own Movie’

lego make your own movie review

After seeing The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie (along with anticipating The LEGO Movie 2 next year or the year after), a lot of kids are itching to make their own LEGO stop-motion movies. Most geek households have a stash of LEGO somewhere, right? Easy peasy! They may even have a huge collections of minifigures, who generally just stand around looking cute (or imposing), but they can be the stars of their own movies.

Stop-motion movies are a fun way for kids (and grown-ups) to express themselves through movie making, without having to actually, you know, be on camera themselves. And LEGO is a perfect pairing. Klutz has come out with a LEGO Make Your Own Movie stop-motion movie book and kit, complete with dozens of LEGO pieces and a complete guide to making stop-motion movies, from creating your first movie to perfecting your technique.

Aimed at kids ages 8 and up, it can fill hours of your kids’ summer days. But if your kids are in the younger end of that age range, I recommend doing this project with them. It’s a challenge to get things right, even as an adult.

This 100% Official LEGO Guide to Stop-Motion Animation is 64 pages of text, plus a large section in the back with extras and backgrounds. The book also includes 36 LEGO elements: 6 heads, 9 faces, 5 torsos, 3 pairs of legs, a baseplate, hats, masks, hair, handcuffs, a skateboard, a diamond, a pizza, and more. There is even a banana for scale. They don’t include enough for an epic rendition of your favorite novel, but there is plenty to get you started and learn about what stop-motion is all about.

lego make your own movie review

The book starts by going over what you get in the kit (see above) and what you need to provide. You’ll need lights, a work surface, a tripod or stand, a camera or phone, and an animation app or software. The book gives a little bit of advice on that last point, but not much. I was a bit disappointed that they didn’t have a specific LEGO app to offer (there used to be a LEGO Movie Maker app, but I think it’s defunct), but there are plenty of other options.

Next, the book goes into making your first movie. It gives you some ideas of what to have as the subject of your movie, though a lot of the ideas and sample LEGO scenes in the book include LEGO pieces that are not included in the kit. Much of it is meant to inspire, but movie makers will need to come up with most of their own ideas. The book does go into detail about how animation works, though, what animation tools are good for, and how to troubleshoot your animation product, if you should run into problems.

The book includes 10 different mini movie ideas that run you through some of the more common movie topics and procedures, and show you how to make some of the stop-motion magic work, such as how to make a minifigure walk, disco dancing, flying, a chase scene, and even what LEGO bricks do when we aren’t looking. These are good options for getting started, and build skills that can be used in more complex movies later.

The book also covers how to tell a good story through cinema, including movie lingo, ideas for when you get stuck, storyboarding, and even a Mad Libs-esque form to fill out for a movie script.

Lastly, movie makers are challenged to up their game by building on their skills and making their work more sophisticated. You can include opening and closing credits, sound effects, special lighting, set design, and interesting camera work.

The back of the book also includes information on sharing your movie and file formats, a ton of scene backgrounds and extras, a clapboard page, and a storyboard template. There are even two sets of picture cards you can photograph in sequence to create a stop-motion movie without any LEGO. This is the perfect place to start when introducing the concept to younger kids. That way they can learn just a few aspects of the process at once, before adding piece movement.

Using the Book

The writing in the book is obviously aimed at younger kids, but anyone new to stop-motion movie making will benefit from the ideas and lessons contained inside. The book is filled with simple, sound-bite-sized tips, but they are enough to get you started.

I’d made stop motion videos once before, with a completely different kind of kit that used software on my laptop. I hadn’t used my phone to capture this kind of action before. So I was still pretty green when it came to stop-motion.

I set up a spot on my kitchen table to work, and immediately built a stand for my phone, knowing I needed to hold it as still as possible. But with even the slim Speck case on my phone, their example of a LEGO phone stand didn’t quite work. I had to add bricks to one side to tilt the stand, plus add extra bricks on both the front and back to raise the phone high enough to get decent scene framing. My phone still shifted quite a bit, but it was the best I could do. I declared myself ready.

I used the free app Stop Motion Studio , which worked pretty well, but almost all of the film-making extras were in-app purchases, and it didn’t re-focus the camera when I would get closer or farther away. Still, it worked as a proof-of-concept, plus the app allows you to export your work in a variety of formats, or even record video instead of a series of photos. (I later discovered that the Windows Movie Maker application on my computer does some fancy stuff too, so next time I would just use that.)

I tried a couple of the ideas from the book, including having a minifigure walk, and filming from above to make it seem like the character was flying or floating. In the end, the walking was very difficult, and I didn’t have the right tripod to film from above, so I held the phone by hand, with debatable success. But a great tripod, such as a larger GorillaPod , would come in real handy for that. I also just played around with some of the pieces, faces, and bodies, creating mini-scenes awkwardly with my grown-up sized hands.

Ah, Romance

My Conclusions and Advice

First of all, I’m obviously not great at stop-motion animation. I’m the first to admit that. But I’m also fairly inexperienced. But the small fingers of children would probably have a much easier time manipulating the LEGO without messing up the whole scene with each shot. A secured LEGO baseplate would also go a long way to smoothing out the action. Also, it helps to have a storyline in your head, even if it’s just a short one. Knowing that the cop is chasing the thief gives you a direction to go, for example. Storyboarding is your friend.

If you want to make more than just rudimentary stop-motion movies with this book, though, you’ll definitely need many more LEGO pieces, to create more scenes, include more characters, and use more props. The included backgrounds and extras are versatile, though, allowing movies to be set in a LEGO town, near icebergs, in space, in the countryside, in a volcano, and under water. But I encourage kids to draw their own backgrounds as well.

My best advice, though, is to use a very secure stand or tripod for your camera or phone when filming, as one little bump affects the quality of the finished piece. My LEGO stand (and my phone within the stand) kept shifting, which made my movies even choppier than normal. If you can, use a larger phone or a tablet to take your photos, as I didn’t notice a few smaller detail mistakes on my iPhone SE, such as my finger in one shot, or bad framing.

My conclusion is that the LEGO Make Your Own Movie book and kit is quite inspiring, but it does take a lot of effort to make a good movie. This is part of the fun, though, and this book will give you and your kids great movie fodder and inspiration for years. And, when you run out of ideas and have mastered the techniques in this book, check out The LEGO Animation Book from No Starch Press, which takes LEGO animation to a much higher sophistication level, best for maybe ages 12 and up. GeekDad Rory reviewed it last year , and is obviously much better at stop-motion than I am.

2 thoughts on “ movies + lego = stop motion fun with klutz’s ‘lego make your own movie’ ”.

The free MS Movie Maker is what we used in our play group and it worked well for this. It’s tough in stop-go in to be patient while filming sequences so they are smooth, but you appreciate how much work goes into claymation and Lego movie.

Yes, patience is key with this!
