Sri Lanka’s most fascinating historical sites

Sigiriya Fortress, Sri Lanka

‘Lanka’, as my Sri Lankan friends at home in Australia often call it, was somewhere I’d been desperate to visit for a while. When I finally got to fulfil that dream last year, it was as diverse, vibrant and wonderful as I had always imagined.

While admittedly it was the food that originally piqued my interest in Sri Lanka as a travel destination (and let me tell you, kotthu roti , string hoppers and endless rice and curry totally lived up to my expectations), there is so much more to this sub-continental wonderland than what goes into your belly.

The amazing beaches and landscapes, the incredible wildlife, and friendly people are some of the first things that jump to mind. But as a bit of a self-confessed history buff, one thing I wasn’t expecting to get out of my Sri Lankan holiday was a good ol’ dose of knowledge about an ancient and fascinating culture. But I did, time and time again.

Worshippers at Kandy's Temple of the Tooth

The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, a picturesque, bustling colonial city nestled among the hilly Sri Lankan tea fields, was a cultural highlight. After arriving during peak hour and getting dropped off near the Temple of the Tooth, we manoeuvred our way through the throngs of locals selling trinkets to get inside the gates of the golden-roofed temple. The temple houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. Even during prayer, no one is actually allowed to see the tooth; it’s kept inside six golden boxes, designed like Babushka dolls, for protection.

If you head further north of Kandy, you’ll hit some of the most famous historical sites in Sri Lanka: Sigiriya, one of the world’s most impressive ruined rock fortresses; Dambulla, a holy cave covered in magnificent artwork; and Anuradhapura, which is the ruins of an entire ancient city. Don’t forget to wear long pants or a skirt, and cover your shoulders if you plan on visiting some of these Buddhist sites.

Sri Lanka's Lion Rock Fortress

Image via Shutterstock

Despite a torrential downpour of monsoonal rain, we braved the climb to the top of Sigiriya. The stairs are steep and narrow in parts, but when you make it to the top, you’re treated not only to the ruins of the ancient royal fortress of Kassapa’s kingdom, but unbelievable views of the surrounding landscape. Don’t forget to check out the incredible rock sculptures of a lion’s paws, which account for Sigiriya’s other name: ‘Lion Rock’. If you’re up for a second (less strenuous) climb nearby, Dambulla’s cave temple is full of ancient Buddhist artwork and beautiful scenery. Take plenty of water on both these excursions, as the sticky humid weather can make the walks challenging.

Travel further north again and you’ll reach Anuradhapura. Anuradhapura was a place that I was desperate to visit, and also to learn the correct pronunciation of. The way the locals say it bounces off the tongue quickly, and, after many missteps, I felt like I had it down pat (it’s Anu-rad-ha-pura for those playing at home!). You could spend hours exploring the ruins of this ancient city, but one of the best ways to see the highlights is to hop on a bike, with a local leader explaining the significance of the different sights.

The famous Sri Maha Bodhi tree

My favourite site was probably Sri Maha Bodhi , a sacred fig tree in Anuradhapura. It’s a beautiful tree, but the story behind it was what really got to me. Sri Lankans say that Princess Sangamitta, the daughter of the Indian Emperor and the sister of Mahinda (who brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka), brought the tree cutting from India, which is why it’s so symbolic for Buddhists. It’s the world’s oldest tree to be planted in this way and has been continuously cultivated for the last 2000 years. Many people come to pray and make offerings, especially on poya (full moon), but even if you aren’t a Buddhist, it’s a stunning place to sit for a moment of quiet appreciation.

Historical Places in Sri Lanka

With a recorded history of over 2,500 years, Sri Lanka holds a treasure trove of historical places and ancient sites waiting to be discovered. From the spread of Buddhism to its colonial past, each period has left an indelible mark seen in both its architecture and culture.

Being one of the first country’s that the Lord Buddha visited to spread the Dhamma, its influence is seen far and wide across the country in the stupas and statues built in his honour. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Cultural Triangle, which lies between the cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla.

Sacred City of Anuradhapura

The Sacred City of Anuradhapura is home to the Sri Maha Bodhi, or Sacred Bo tree, which grew from a sapling of the very tree the Buddha attained enlightenment. Furthermore, held in deep veneration are its many stupas containing relics of the Buddha; the Ruwanweli Seya standing at a height of 338-feet and Jethawanaramya at 400-feet are the most notable and in best condition. Other than from a religious perspective they are a must see historical places due to the sheer feat of engineering undertaken in building them well over 2,000 years ago. Finally, a short drive from Anuradhapura, lies Mihintale, which is considered the cradle of Buddhism in the country.

Ancient City of Polonnaruwa

In the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa lies the Royal Citadel of King Parakramabahu. This palace dates back to the 12th century and it bears further testament to how advanced the ancient civilisation was. Nearby, the Galvihara features four magnificent statues of the Buddha carved into a single granite rock and is one of the must-see historical places in Polonnaruwa.

Dambulla and Sigiriya

The Golden Temple of Dambulla , a World Heritage site, is a historical place with a complex of five caves, which hold 153 statues of the Buddha, three ancient Kings, and two Hindu deities. Furthermore, at the center of the Cultural Triangle, the Rock Fortress of Sigiriya also known as the Lion Rock is one of the most visited sites in Sri Lanka. Dating back to the 5th Century, this granite monolith towering 660 feet above the surrounding plains was the site of King Kasyapa’s palace. Set amidst elaborate water gardens around it, midway up the rock a giant lion cut into the stone protects the entrance to the palace.

Temple of the Tooth- Kandy

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, is one of the most sacred historical places to Buddhists not only in Sri Lanka but the world over. So named as it holds the tooth relic of the Buddha, every year in July or August the relic is taken on public display around the Kandy lake. Known as the Esala Perahera, it is a spectacular procession of light and sound with elephants in regalia bearing the tooth casket, heralded by traditional dance and performing troops. A similar pageant, known as the Navam Perahera, held in February every year in Colombo, is of equal grandeur.

Ramayana Trails

With Hindu culture having played an important part in forming the social fabric of Sri Lanka, the Shiva temples of Thirukeetheswaram in Mannar, Muneswaram in Chilaw and Koneswaram in Trincomalee are its three most important places of worship. Also, more than fifty sites and historical places of the Ramayana epic are to be found in Sri Lanka with the Seetha Aman Kovil , Ravana Cave , Rumassala and Ussangoda being the most accessible and popular.

Nowhere is the influence of Sri Lanka’s colonial past more evident than Galle. First occupied by the Portuguese and then by the Dutch, the Galle Fort is well preserved historical place and almost a page out of a history book. Designated a World Heritage site, its original architecture has been mostly preserved and travelling down its narrow streets presents a quaint journey through time.

Proximity to the Indian subcontinent has facilitated close cultural interaction between Sri Lanka and India from ancient times. At a crossroads of maritime routes traversing the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has also been exposed to cultural influences from other Asian civilizations. Ancient Greek geographers called it Taprobane. Arabs referred to it as Serendib . Later European mapmakers called it Ceylon, a name still used occasionally for trade purposes. It officially became Sri Lanka in 1972.

The distinctive civilization of Sri Lanka, with roots that can be traced back to the 6th century bce , is characterized by two factors: the preservation of Theravada Buddhism (the orthodox school of Buddhism having its literary traditions in the Pali language) and the development over two millennia of a sophisticated system of irrigation in the drier parts of the country. This civilization was further enriched by the influences of Hinduism and Islam .

In 1948, after nearly 150 years of British rule, Sri Lanka became an independent country, and it was admitted to the United Nations seven years later. The country is a member of the Commonwealth and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

Colombo , which emerged as the main urban centre during British rule, remains the executive and judicial capital of Sri Lanka; Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte , a Colombo suburb, is the legislative capital. For administrative purposes, the country has been divided into nine provinces and subdivided into 25 districts.

Sri Lanka is densely populated. The majority of its people are poor, live in rural areas, and depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Sri Lanka is a small but very beautiful island with a rich and ancient history and culture. It is full of the most amazing places to visit and in recognition of the wondrous beauty of these sites, eight of the best have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Sri Dalada Maligawa

The  Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic  which is an integral part of Sri Lankan Buddhism is situated in the hill capital of Kandy. The relic itself is a tooth of the Lord Buddha which was saved from his funeral pyre and is venerated by all Buddhists. Historically this relic has been very important since whoever had it in his possession was considered the ruler of the country. For this reason the kings who ruled in the past went to great lengths to protect it.

Worship rituals are conducted daily in the Inner Chamber by monks of the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters of the temple. Services are held at dawn, noon and every evening. The Sacred Relic is bathed in a symbolic ceremony on Wednesdays with a herbal preparation of fragrant water and flowers. This ritual is called Nanumura Mangallaya and people believe that this water has healing powers and is therefore distributed among devotees present.

During Sri Lanka’s turbulent civil war, the Temple sustained some bomb damage as well, but has been restored fully.

Located in Sri Lanka’s Cultural  Triangle,  Sigiriya  is part palace and part fortress and was used in the 4 th Century AD by King Kasyapa. Even though it was lived in centuries ago, there is evidence of how advanced the people were in areas such as culture and engineering. The flat rock surface has ruins of an upper palace, a terrace at mid-level with the Lion Gate, mirror wall and beautiful frescoes, a lower palace and of course the walled gardens and moats at the bottom.

The view from the top of the rock is stunning and extends for miles. The palace situated there even contains cisterns cut into the rock wall and these still retain water, an example of the ingenuity of the ancient people.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura  the seat of ancient Sri Lankan civilization is also located in the Cultural Triangle, and was one of the capital cities several centuries ago. Anuradhapura is 205km from Colombo and contains some ruins of ancient palaces and buildings that have been preserved quite well.

The city lies on the banks of the Malvathu Oya and is revered by Buddhists because of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a Bo Tree that has been grown from a sapling of the tree under which the lord Buddha was enlightened.

Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa  is the second most ancient Sri Lankan kingdom, and its most famous ruler was King Parakramabahu I, who constructed the giant Parakrama Samudraya (tank) and many Buddhist temples and statues.

Even today, this ancient city is considered the best example of a meticulously planned Archealogical site, which is a reflection of the greatness displayed by the rulers of that era.

Cave temples of Dambulla

The  Dambulla Cave Temple  or the Golden Temple of Dambulla is located 148km from Colombo and is considered the biggest cave temple complex in the country as well as the best preserved. The rock stands 160m or 525ft above the nearby plains and there over 80 recorded caves. These contain paintings and statues of the Lord Buddha, Kings of Sri Lanka, Gods and Goddesses including those of the Hindu faith.

The temptation of the Lord Buddha by Mara (the demon) and his first sermon are some of the events depicted on the cave walls.

Galle  is a seaside town on the southwestern coastal belt, 119km from Colombo. Gimhathiththa and Qali are names it was known by in centuries gone by, and it was then the island’s main port. Galle was at its peak when it was a Dutch stronghold, before the British rule began and evidence of this still exists in the form of the Galle Dutch Fort and the quaint Dutch period buildings that abound there.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja Forest Reserve  is one of Sri Lanka’s important National Parks and has been declared a Biosphere Reserve as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Translated as ‘Kingdom of the Lion’, Sinharaja is a hilly rain forest that is home to an abundance of rare and precious endemic species – trees, amphibians, insects, birds, reptiles and mammals.

It is not possible to view the resident wildlife as easily as in the National Parks of the dry-zone due to the dense vegetation. Elephants are not found here and there are just a few Leopards, with the Purple –faced Langur the most common mammal here.

Central Highlands of Sri Lanka

The Central Highlands is made up of three wet-zone parks situated in the hills in the middle of Sri Lanka.

  • Peak Wilderness Sanctuary which includes Adam’s Peak
  • Hortain Plains National Park
  • Knuckles Range

Kandy Lake is an artificial lake built by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1807. The lake, also called Kiri Muhuda or Sea of the Milk, is situated in the heart of the Kandy city. It covers an area of 6,544 sq. m. with a circumference of 3.21 km. The lake boasts of a small island at its center. A building, together with some earliest ruins is also located at the center of the lake. The iconic serene lake is one of the greatest attractions for visitors for its lush green settings and pristine blue waters. It has several rest zones, where tourists can sit, breathe fresh air, and catch the glimpse of scenic beauty around them. Nature lovers and tourists can enjoy the picturesque surroundings and soothe their jittery nerves by taking a stroll around the 2.1 km pathway. People generally stroll or jog the pathway in the evening, when the mercury drops considerably. It presents a beautiful sight at night. The palm trees in the middle of the lake add charm to the entire surroundings.  Tourists can opt for boat rides and relish the experience. One can hire the boat either for their party or join other passengers for a ride. The boat ride costs approximately Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2000 for a 20-minute boating experience around the Lake.  Visitors can look forward to gratifying their senses, by buying products ranging from balloons to cashew nuts from vendors roaming around the lake. Owing to the pollution and other factors, which led to shrinkage of the lake, the management has declared it as a protected area and banned fishing at this spot. However, animal lovers and ornithologists can revel in watching birds, fishes, and huge monitor lizards.

Once serving as the capital city of the country, Yapahuwa is one of the most sought-after historical places to visit in Sri Lanka. Right at the center, the Citadel of Yapahuwa rises to about a hundred meters above the surrounding areas. Following the capture of the Fort in the 13th century, the complex was abandoned and eventually inhabited by Buddhist monks. Today, visitors get to witness a series of elaborate staircases and statues at the fort ruins, some of the most spectacular in the country. Home to the Sri Dalada Maligawa, commonly known as The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. Located inside the royal palace compound revered by the local Buddhist community, the Tooth Relic holds mythological importance that whoever holds it will be the most powerful in the country. Hence, kings in ancient times and people in power in recent years have staunchly committed to protecting it. The sacred relic is immersed in an herbal preparation of flowers and fragrant water on Wednesdays as a symbolic bathing ritual. This water, called Nanumura Mangallaya, is believed to possess healing properties and is distributed among visitors. Top 5 historical sites in sri lanka.

By Christie   Posted 29th Jul 2024

Welcome to Sri Lanka, where the tales of old are etched into every corner of its majestic landscapes. Crisscrossed by historic trade routes, this island has played host to a symphony of cultures, each leaving a mark and shaping what we love about the place today.

From the bold adventurers of India and the diligent merchants of East Asia to the far-reaching explorers of Europe, they've all had a chapter in Sri Lanka's ongoing story. With a proud collection of eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Sri Lanka is a paradise to explore!

Join us as we shake hands with the past, tracing the footsteps of kings and the daily strides of locals.

1. Sigiriya (Lion Rock)

Sigiriya, once a thriving capital, may have been short-lived, but its legacy endures. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a testament to the ingenuity of Sri Lanka's ancient civilization—from its origins as a royal residence to its transformation into a peaceful Buddhist monastery.

The towering rock fortress, aptly nicknamed "the Fortress in the Skies," was a marvel of both audacious architecture and natural splendor. At the heart of this historical masterpiece was King Kshyapa (477–595 AD), who chose this monumental 660-foot (200 meters) rock column as his capital. His vision went beyond mere location; he adorned the fortress with enduring frescoes*—eighteen of which still captivate visitors today.

*Frescoes are wall paintings on wet plaster, allowing the color to bond with the wall.

Today, the remnants of majestic staircases and the colossal lions paws which formed the ancient gateway invite travelers to step back in time. Ascend to where luxurious pools and lush gardens once flourished and encounter the Mirror Wall. This polished stretch of history, spanning a hundred meters, reflects the grandeur of its era with inscriptions from as early as the 8th century.

Despite its brief period as a capital, abandoned after King Kshayapa's death, the site later served as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Even in ruins, Sigiriusembodies a 1,500-year-old legacy of architectural brilliance, celebrated in legends such as the Ramayana, where it is dubbed "The City of Gods."

Discover Sigiriya's ancient wonders up close with Grasshopper Adventure's guided bike tours .

2. Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa)

Nestled in the south-central part of the island, Kandy is a city that wears its spiritual heart on its sleeve, cradling Sri Lanka’s most precious Buddhist relic — the tooth of the Buddha. Encased within an elaborate golden-roofed temple, this sacred tooth has a vantage point overlooking the serene Kandy Lake.

Legend holds that the guardian of the Buddha's Tooth commands the destiny of the nation, a belief that underscores its monumental importance and its UNESCO World Heritage status. As the spiritual epicenter of the island, the temple's significance in the Buddhist realm is monumental, marked by weekly ceremonies where the tooth is bathed in fragrant water and flowers, sharing its blessed healing waters with devotees.

The tale of the tooth traces back to the cremation of Gautama Buddha in India, from where it was rescued and delivered to King Guhasiva. In a tale of intrigue and devotion, Princess Hemamali smuggled the relic into Sri Lanka, concealed within her hair, and presented it to the king in Anuradhapura in 313 AD. Since then, the tooth has been venerated and zealously guarded by Sri Lankans, its story woven into the fabric of the nation's history.

Visiting Tips: Ensure your tickets are bought directly at the entrance. Embrace local traditions by removing your shoes and dressing modestly, with knees and shoulders covered, as you step into a realm of spiritual sanctity.

Photographs may capture memories, but inside this temple, the experience itself is your most precious keepsake—photography is respectfully discouraged.

Feel free to join in the ceremonial washing rituals held at dawn (05:00) and dusk (18:00), an experience that allows you to connect deeply with the soul of Sri Lanka.

3. Polonnaruwa

Nestled east of Sigiriya, the Polonnaruwa archeological park serves as a shining beacon of the ingenuity and vision of Sri Lanka’s ancestral monarchs. As a designated World Heritage site, it holds a masterfully preserved city of archaeological wonders amidst a blend of nature’s allure.

Here, amid the embrace of greenery, a treasure trove of ancient majesty awaits—statues that whisper tales of old, temples that stand as pinnacles of devotion, and stupas that reach silently towards the skies. This former heart of commerce and spirituality, which proudly held the title of Sri Lanka's second capital between 993 and 1200 AD, now invites the footsteps of explorers spanning its over 3km expanse.

Your journey through time begins with a ticket from the City Library, serving as your portal to the past. Venture forth to discover grand palaces, sacred temples, and the Quadrangle—a remarkable cluster of ruins showcasing the zenith of ancient Sri Lankan architecture. If your curiosity is not yet sated, the museum beckons with its rich collection, offering deeper insights into Polonnaruwa’s storied legacy, from iconic statues to artifacts of ancient healing practices.

Beyond the echoes of history, Polonnarya is also a sanctuary for the wild heart. Venture to Wasgamuwa or Angammedilla National Parks. Wasgamuwa is a bastion of wildlife conservation, where elephants roam free, and leopards prowl the shadows. Angammedilla is a haven of biodiversity, with its thick forests and tranquil waters crafting a serene retreat from the world.

4. Galle Fort

Galle Forte ranks among the top five historical sites in Sri Lanka, serving as a crucial maritime hub for over 200 years. The fort-city encapsulates the architectural and cultural legacies of its Portuguese and Dutch colonial periods. Located at the southwestern tip of the Sri Lanka, Galle stands proudly as the largest remaining European-built fortress in Asia, distinguished as another World Heritage site that invites visitors to explore the island's exotic past.

The Fort has earned a reputation for captivating explorers with its well-preserved structures, thanks to a government commitment to its restoration. Covering 90 hectares, the Fort's journey begins at the Main Gate in the north and stretches across the peninsula to the south. Here, old European buildings set against a tropical backdrop create a surreal visual experience, celebrating a blend of different religions and cultures. A complete tour around the fort and its walls offers a wonderful perspective of the city and takes about 2 hours.

Recently, Galle has experienced a renaissance. Trendy cafes, unique boutiques, and modern accommodations now line the coast, adding a contemporary flair to the city's historic charm. While exploring, visitors should take time to discover the lighthouse, mosque, outdoor entertainment venues, and historical Dutch hospital. The fort's western walls are especially popular at sunset, offering a spectacular end to a day of exploration.

In Galle, history is alive and well, intermingling with modern elements that invite travelers to explore this enchanting city's layered history and cultural richness.

Take a walking tour through Galle Fort before strolling on the nearby Unawatuna Bay on a Grasshopper Adventures bike tour of Sri Lanka .

5. Nuwara Eliya (Little England)

Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as "Little England," transports you to a world where time travel seems tangible. Established in 1846 and meaning "city on the plain" or "city of light," it nestles in a stunning landscape complemented by a mild climate.

This locale is celebrated as the most significant area for tea production in Sri Lanka, with domestic travellers frequently visiting, especially during the peak flowering season that beautifully aligns with the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year celebrations in April.

The city is adorned with colonial British architecture, and the 19th-century buildings, ranging from residential to civil service structures, add to its charm and historical depth.

Explore Nuwara Eliya by bike and then venture on a safari to see leopards and elephants with Grasshopper Adventures on a bike tour of Sri Lanka .

Nestled among a sprawling 100-acre garden that echoes the charm of an English countryside, the Queens Cottage (also affectionately known as the Lodge), serves up a hefty slice of sophisticated history. As the 19th century came to a close, it stood as a haven for the governors of Ceylon and their esteemed guests. Within its welcoming walls, the seeds of Ceylon's first constitution were sown back in 1947. Now, it's graced by His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, the President of Sri Lanka himself.

Take a stroll down memory lane with nearby landmarks like the Post Office and the dignified Hill Club, standing tall as testimonies to a bygone era. Don't miss a peek at General’s House, where tales of the British General echo amidst whispers of its somewhat spirited past. Take the stories of room number 16, for example, where legend has it that an English lady's presence lingers long after her untimely departure.

Venture outside the town's cozy embrace, and you're greeted by nature's grand canvas, the wildlife reserve to the north and Horton Plains National Park to the south. Here, the World’s End cliff plunges dramatically, revealing sweeping vistas that blur the lines between the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces. Just a stone's throw away, Baker’s Falls cascades with a grace named after the city's founding explorer, Samuel Baker.

Sigiriya is a vast rock used over time as a Buddhist monastery and as a 5th-century royal fortress.

About Sigiriya

Sigiriya in Sri Lanka combines a natural phenomenon with history and religion, as the site of an ancient rock fortress and royal palace.

Sigiriya history

Comprised of a vast red rock mound rising over 660 feet, it is thought that Sigiriya (meaning “Lion Rock”) was originally inhabited during the 3rd century BC, when a Buddhist monastery was founded there.

In the 5th century AD, it is thought that Sigiriya’s use changed from a sacred site to a royal one. It is said that, having assassinated his father King Dhatusena and taken the throne, King Kashyapa I of the Anuradhapura Kingdom sought an easily defensible place to build his palace, and that he chose to construct it atop Sigiriya.

In the late 5th century, Kashyapa was defeated in battle and Sigiriya once again became a Buddhist monastery, eventually falling into decline.

Sigiriya today

The ruins of Kashyapa’s castle can still be seen at Sigiriya today, and include the remnants of a city at the foot of the rock. From these ruins, it is evident that the king’s city was grand, with gardens, monuments and, of course, his palace.

One of the most notable sites at Sigiriya is also its series of frescoes painted onto the rocks, depicting numerous female figures. There would have originally been hundreds of similar frescoes. There is a debate as to whether these were created under Kashyapa or whether these were the creation of the Buddhist monks as numerous representations of one of their deities.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982, Sigiriya is now open to the public.

Getting to Sigiriya

Sigiriya is located in the northern Matale District of Sri Lanka, just off the A6 road and along the B162. A train is available from Colombo to Habrana, which would take around 5-6 hours depending on delays, from which a 30-minute taxi can take you to Sigiriya itself.

Hello Again Sri Lanka

Heritage Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka with its nearly 3000 years of history holds some of world’s ancient cities including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Digamadulla. Remnants of these once glorious cities, their palaces, temples, monasteries, hospitals and theaters intricately carved and modeled out of stone lay abandoned amidst the soaring mountains.

Of all the ancient sites the most famed and most exquisite is the Kingdom of Anuradhapura. Sri Lanka’s third and the longest serving capital and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world is also one of the most sacred cities of World Buddhists. It was the capital of Sri Lanka from the Fourth Century BC up to the turn of the eleventh Century and was one of the most stable and durable centers of political power and urban life in South Asia. However the city itself is much older than the Kingdom of Anuradhapura and according to archeological evidence could have originated as far as tenth century BC. Anuradhapura was abandoned due to the due to repeated South Indian Invasions and was eventually forgotten with time until it was rediscovered in the early 19 th century.

Polonnaruwa, the second most ancient kingdom of the country was first made the political center of the country in the ninth century BC. Irrigation systems that are far superior to those of the Anuradhapura Age were constructed in Polonnaruwa kingdom, and still provide irrigation water to the farmers in and around Polonnaruwa. Yet the kingdom’s glory was short-lived and a South Indian invasion pushed the political centre towards the centre of the country by the eleventh century. Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned archaeological relic sites in the country, a testimony to the discipline and greatness of the Kingdom's first rulers.

Digamadulla, the Eastern kingdom of Sri Lanka was the agricultural and spiritual capital of the country during the Anuradhapura kingdom. Ruled by a viceroy of the Anuradhapura king Digamadulla was a prosperous province with grand palace, monasteries and temples at every juncture. Having received lesser attention of archaeologists compared to Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa many a great creations of ancient Digamadulla had been lost to time, war and plunder while many more silently awaits in the midst of the forests covering the lands of Eastern Sri Lanka.
