It was a cloudy day when I took my first step into the compound of my school. I was carrying a new backpack that was filled with notebooks. Though the backpack was a bit heavy, instead of focusing on the weight, I was excited about the beginning of my journey on my first day in school.

My classroom was at the end of the corridor. As I entered my classroom, my class teacher introduced me to the class and made me feel welcome. Activities like reading, solving problems in groups, and sharing our lunch boxes slowly and steadily transformed the new student with a sense of belonging.

The whole day progressed with mixed excitement as well as emotions. As the bell rang, declaring the end of the school day, the school felt like a world of possibilities where the journey was more than textbooks.

It was a sunny day and the sun was shining brightly. With my new and attractive backpack, I was moving through the school gate. It was my first day in school and I was filled with nervousness and excitement. From the tower of the building to the playground everything was bigger than life. As a school student, I was about to enter a new world.

The corridor was filled with the echo of students. As I entered the classroom, wearing a mix of curiosity and excitement, my classmates and class teacher welcomed me with a warm smile. After a round of introductions and some warm-up activities, strangers gradually started tuning into potential friends. At lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the smell of delicious food. However, I hesitated before joining the group of students but soon enough, I was laughing with my new friends and sharing stories. The unfamiliar were now my friends and transformed my mixed emotions into delightfulness.

The bell rang for the next class and I stepped out for new learning in my new academic home. My first day of school had many memorable stories, with old subjects and new introductions of knowledge. The day was spent learning, sharing and making new memories.

My first day in school started by stepping onto the school bus with a bag full of books and a heart full of curiosity. It was like I was starting a new chapter in my life. After traveling a long way back, I stepped at the gate of my school. The school gate welcomed me with open arms and greeted me with a sense of excitement as well as nervousness.

As I entered the classroom, I found many new faces. Arranging my stuff on the seat, I sat next to an unknown, who later on turned into the best friend of my life. I entered my class with a welcoming smile, and later on, I turned everything in with ease. During our lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the energy of students.

At first, I hesitated to interact with the children, but later on, I was a part of a group that invited me to join the table. At lunchtime, I made many new friends and was no longer a stranger. After having delicious food and chit-chatting with friends, we get back to our respective classrooms. Different subjects such as mathematics, science, and English never left the same impact as they did on the first day of school.

The teacher taught the lessons so interestingly that we learned the chapter with a mix of laughter and learning. At the end of the day, we all went straight to the playground and enjoyed the swings. Moreover, in the playground, I also met many faces who were new to the school and had their first day in school, like me.

While returning home, I realised that my first day was not just about learning new subjects; it was about making new friends, sailing into new vibrant classrooms, and settling myself as a new student. The morning, which was full of uncertainty at the end of the day, came to an end with exciting adventures and endless possibilities. With new experiences, I look forward to new academic and personal growth in the wonderful world of education.

Schools always carry beautiful memories for everyone. But when talking about the first day of school, a series of emotions engulf us. Kids need to learn to catch the essence of the same. Here is a sample to help your child write a paragraph on the first day at school.

Schools are the epitome of receiving knowledge and the first step toward the outside world. I got admitted to school at the age of 5. I woke up early, got dressed and went to school. I entered the school premises with my parents. The school was a two-storey-ed building with nine rooms and had a green lawn in the front. I was taken to my class, where other students were sitting. It was a small classroom with a window and six benches. I sat beside a boy who later became my best friend. Our class teacher was amiable and taught us the alphabet. It was a beautiful experience as I made new friends and played with them.

School holds a special place in every student’s heart. Writing essays on such topics will allow kids to revisit this special day. Given here is a short essay for classes 1, 2 and 3 to help kids write essays on the first day at school.

A school is a primary institution where children go to learn new ideas and habits and receive education while making new friends on the journey. I was admitted to the school when I was 5 years old. It was a primary school, and I was really scared to attend it as it was the first time I had to spend a long time without my parents outside the home. On the first day, I woke up early as it was morning school, wore the new uniform, and reached school with my parents. They dropped me off at the Headmistress’s office, from where I was taken to my class. As I entered my class, I saw a few high benches and low benches where other students were sitting on. I sat on the third bench, where I made a friend who later became my best friend. I loved my first day at school and still cherish the memories.

The first day of school is very different for every kid. Some cry, some get excited, and some feel reluctant about the new environment. A long essay should capture these various emotions and feelings in a streamlined manner. Here is an example of writing an essay on the first day at school for class 3.

On my first day at school, I woke up early and dressed in my new uniform. I went to the school premises with my parents. The premises was huge with green lawns and a two-storey-ed building with nine rooms. I went to the Headmistress’s office and was later taken to my classroom by our class teacher. It was a small yet airy room with some benches and a blackboard. I sat on the third bench where another student was seated, who later became my best friend. Our class teacher was very friendly, and we got to introduce ourselves. I learnt a new alphabet and played with my new friends. We were given the school tour on the first day. We were shown restrooms, a swing area, a dance room, etc. Though I enjoyed my first day, it wasn’t easy to stay so long without my parents. I missed them terribly. My mother packed my favourite snack for lunch, and I missed her badly then. I remember many kids crying and teachers trying to soothe them and pamper them with toffees. We were given some sheets and colours to enjoy colouring. I recall I was given a butterfly to colour. My friend got a crocodile, and I saw another kid colouring a bird. It was such a fantastic activity. Another activity happened that day; we had to tell the teacher the one thing we instantly liked about the school. I said swings, and my friend said colours. It was a memorable day that I cherish even today.

Introduction To Teachers And Friends

Our class teacher introduced us to other teachers, and we were asked to introduce ourselves. Teachers made us sit alphabetically. Luckily my friend’s name also started with S, like me, so we sat together. We played fun Pictionary games. We were asked to perform our hobbies and were given toffees. It was amazing to meet my best friend, who shared the same hobby, dancing with me. The teacher also read a beautiful story to us. I really loved the overall experience.

This essay will help kids to grow their research, persuasion and analytical skills. Essay writing helps improve writing skills, demonstrate your intelligence, gain knowledge in multiple niches, improve critical and analytical abilities, and improve communication skills.

Most of the kids have fond memories of their first day. Such essay-writing activities allow kids to explore their inner emotions well and learn the art of writing and simple essay construction.

Short Essay on First Day of School in 100 Words

The memories of our school are always precious to us. When we grow up and leave our schools, we still remember those beautiful days. School gifts us with friends, good teachers, studies, manners, and also lots of happiness.

There is no one who does not enjoy going to school. And the best part of school life is the first day of school. As little children, we generally cry when we go to school. We do not understand everything happening there. Our parents take us there. Often we have to give an admission test for that school. But slowly we make new friends and start enjoying our school days.

Short Essay on First Day of School in 200 Words

School gives us one of the best memories of our lives. We will realize this after leaving our school and going for higher education. For a long period of our life, we spend time in our school. So it soon becomes our second home. Perhaps, the most important day in our life is the first day of our school. We get into that building for the first time.

All of us cry when we get into school. It happens because we do not want to leave our parents and house. For the time, school seems to be a different place. There are new people, new teachers, new friends, big classrooms, benches, and chairs. We get a pile of books and copies when we get into our school. But soon we start adjusting. We no longer cry we go to school. We wait to meet our friends. We come across our teachers. They start loving us just like our parents.

We feel home-like when we stay in school. As students, we have to follow rules. That we obediently follow. We enjoy our first school prayers and the assembly. The first day of our school remains like a precious memory. We do not forget that day and enjoy sharing it with everyone.

Short Essay on First Day of School in 400 Words

School gives us the best time of our lives. Everything seems very easy to understand. We learn, study, and also enjoy ourselves in school. School life gifts us with friends, good teachers, and good memories. And the best moment of our lives is the first day of school. Everything seems new and different. Yet it is a treasure of our lives. We can never forget the days of our school, especially the first day.

The first day of school is perhaps the most important. It is not only the beginning of our studies but also the start of a new life. We all remember how on the first day we had cried. We hated going to school back then. We thought someone will take us away from our parents and house. So parents always stay with us on our very first day. We all have to sit for an admission test. We prepare the basics back at home and then give the examination.

All children at the age of three are admitted to primary schools. Once our examination gets over, we get admission into the new school. We feel happiest as we get new school bags, books, copies, and other things. The first journey to school is an exciting one. Holding the hands of our parents, we attend the school.

We cry as the teacher takes us to our classes. But soon we see many little children sitting in the class. And we forget our tears. Soon we start making friends and enjoying the classes together. We share our tiffins and learn the habit of sharing. We come across some new people. We learn to call them teachers. They teach us in our class and we enjoy sitting with our friends and learning the same things.

As the first day comes to an end, we hurry outside to our parents. We feel happy as we share the details of our first class. From that moment onward, we never cry to go to school. But we wait every morning to visit school and meet our friends. The best part of school life is having friends to play with.

Everything remains very soft and innocent. From the first day, the teachers and the school building become very dear to us. So just like the first day, we cry when we leave our school. We all get to go for higher education. We all do our jobs. But throughout our lives, the school remains a great memory. The first day of school is the biggest gift of God.

In this session above, I have tried to discuss the entire context in a very simple language that all kinds of students can easily understand. I don’t really remember much of what happened as a child. All I know is that I grew up in a pretty normal household with a mom, dad and an older brother. Not much of the outside world scared me, or even intimidated me. I didn’t even know that there was much of an outside world. Everything I had at home, and around the neighborhood was everything I knew, and that was it. My mom efficiently prepared me for my first day of school in the way she thought to be the best. She would anticipate the day it would come, and assure me that everything was going to be okay. I remember her talking about the games we would play, how I would get to meet other kids my age and that there would be a nice teacher to guide me along my way. It didn’t sound that scary. I mostly liked the idea of getting snacks in the middle and getting to play with new toys, nap time wasn’t really my thing, though; I could always do that at home. There were some things my eager six-year-old self was excited about, but I never understood exactly why I had to go to school. My first day of school, being a big change in my life, is something I will always remember and relate to other dramatic changes which I have gone through. I’m sure that most people can relate to this in a sense that everyone has gone through a significant change in their life, no matter how mundane the event may be.

I wondered what the other kids were like, and why they had to go to school, too. I wondered if they colored, played or did things as well as I did. Probably not. My mom explained to me that I’ll be learning new things, and that I’ll have to go to school five times a week. For me at that age, a week seemed very long. What if I didn’t want to go? What if I just wanted to stay home? I really had mixed emotions about the subject.

After much prepping, the first day of school finally came. I remember getting out of the car and looking up at the structure in front of me. The building had colorful painting on its bricks on the sides, with a bright blue door. My eyes grew bigger, and I didn’t even realize I was holding my breath. All my mixed emotions drained into one at that very moment – fear. I was not sure of exactly what to expect, and I didn’t know anyone in there. How would I call my mom if I wanted something, if I was hungry or if I hurt myself? Suddenly, all of this school business did not seem like such a good idea. I turned to my mom who was holding her hand out to me and smiling. I gave her a worried look, which she caught on to right away. She stepped closer and nudged me towards the door. After she gave me a kiss on the forehead, that was it, she was gone and I was stuck in school, a place I was so unfamiliar with.

The bell rang and I proceeded to walk through the door. I took a big breath and looked around. The room was so bright and colorful and there were so many different artworks posted on the walls. I clearly remember a sea of pinks, yellows, blues and greens. There were pictures of animals, fruits and houses all drawn by other kids decorating the room. I recall there being desks desks with paper and crayons, and there was even a little corner with toys! This calmed me down, and made me feel like it was not as bad as I thought.

I looked at the other kids coming in; I did as they did and left my backpack on a hook near the door, and took a seat in an empty chair closest to me. We were greeted by an older lady; she told us that she was going to be our teacher. She started us off by calling us from a list one by one; to make sure we were all there. I also remember having name tags of some sort, I think we kept those on even a week after school started. At that time, I didn’t get why, I already knew my name after all.

We learned some songs, played a lot of games and because we all did what we were told, we got some time to play with the toys in the corner of the room. Next thing I know, we were given snacks. We then got to play outside on the playground. Because of all the playing, we got tired pretty soon, and they let us sleep. After a bit more games, another bell rang and the teacher told us it was time to go home. The day seemed really long since we did so much, but none of it was boring.

As soon as I grabbed my bag and stepped outside the door, I saw my mom waiting for on the side walk. I ran to her, and clearly remember feeling like I haven’t seen her in such a long time. During the car ride back home, I talked tirelessly about how the day went and all the new things I did, and how the other children were just like me, and most of them like the same things I liked. I asked her when I’ll go back, and I just got excited when she told me when I wake up in the morning, I’ll be going again.

I don’t remember ever feeling that anxious and excited all at once, all my expectations about school were mostly wrong. According to most researchers specializing in childhood psychology, children do tend to have very unrealistic expectations about their first day of school (Kendrick).

I had a pretty average childhood before kindergarten; I guess all my fears about changing my environment just came up because I was not sure of what to expect leaving the comforts of my home. This was the first significant time in which I realized that there is a bigger world out there, and there are so many things to learn, people to meet and things to do. I felt so grown-up at that time, being able to go somewhere where I didn’t need my parents, it was all just me, no help. I guess that this first day of kindergarten is much like all the other first days of school – like the first day of middle school, high school and even college. I built myself up with all these ideas, and you get all worked up about them, but once you’re there and you get the flow of how things are done, it becomes easier. When there is an event in your life, no matter how mundane or usual it may seem, it can change how you view things. Looking back at my first day of kindergarten and evaluating my thoughts as compared to what actually happened, I can say that I got overwhelmed more with the idea of kindergarten more than anything. Once you get over those negative thoughts in your head, you realize that it’s not that bad. You just have to rise above your thoughts and your fears. My first day of kindergarten will always be that event I’ll remember which changed how I saw things in life.

Essay on My First Day at School 200 Words in English

Below we have provided My First Day at School Essay in English, suitable for class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6.

It was a new place, a modern-day and first day of my school in St. Mary’s School. My father works in the police department as a police officer, so he keeps receiving transference from one place to another depending upon his work. I never had the opportunity to study in the same school and spend my childhood with similar friends.

They kept on changing due to our constant relocation to different places. I woke up in the morning, had my breakfast and got ready for school. It was a bright sunny day, and as usual, I was excited and anxious to meet new people in my life.

My mother dropped me at the school gate. While travelling in a car, we had a small pep talk where she was trying to make me understand the fresh opening and beautiful encounters I will experience in the school. As soon as I reached, I was nervous and a bit scared. I bade my mother goodbye and slowly walked inside the gate.

Kids were smiling, laughing and staring at me. I felt like an alien who just landed from another planet and desperately wanted to go back, but I promised my mother that I would enjoy my brand-new environment. A generous lady approached me and asked me my name and classroom.

She was kind and guided me to my classroom an even introduced me to the class. I breathe a sigh of relief and felt relaxed. My classmates seemed friendly, and one of the kids offered me a seat next to him with a smile. Our class teacher entered the room and wished us a good morning.

My First Day at School Essay, 350 Words

By: Haque | For Class 9-10/SSC | 01-01-’23

It was one day some six years ago that I first attended school as a regular student. But I still remember that day I felt as if it happened only yesterday.

I still remember the day my parents decided to send me to school. I was not at all happy on the morning when I was being dressed for school for the first time. Mother brushed my hair, dressed me in, and sent me to school with my father .

My father took me to the headmaster. My heart was beating fast. The headmaster looked at me, smiled, and said, “so, you are the son of my dear pupil and now you are going to be my pupil too.” I politely replied, “yes sir”. My reply seemed to please him. He then asked me a few questions from my books and I promptly answered them all. I was admitted into class one.

When my father left me at school to attend classes, I found myself all alone. There were so many boys and classmates. But they were all strangers to me. When the bell rang, our class teacher entered. We all stood up. Hardly had I taken my seat when my teacher put me a question. I got afraid and stood dumbfounded. My classmates laughed and I got more nervous.

I felt excited about the new school environment. The teachers taught us with love and with a smile. They have left a deep impression on my young mind.

During recess, while other boys played, I simply, looked on. I did not even eat the tiffin that my mother had given me. I was thinking of her and of my home all the time. At the end of school, I ran home and told my mother all that had happened in the school.

But it didn’t take long for my school to become my favorite place. Those who were strangers at my first meet soon became my best friends . I left there five years of my childhood. The golden memory of going to school on the first day will remain in my heart forever.

Essay on My School for Students and Children

500+ words essay on my school.

Education is an essential part of our lives. We are nothing without knowledge, and education is what separates us from others. The main step to acquiring education is enrolling oneself in a school. School serves as the first learning place for most of the people. Similarly, it is the first spark in receiving an education. In this essay on my school, I will tell you why I love my school and what my school has taught me.

We have all been to school and we have loved each and every moment we have spent over there as those were the building blocks of our lives. A school is a place where students are taught the fundamentals of life, as well as how to grow and survive in life. It instils in us values and principles that serve as the foundation for a child’s development.

My school is my second home where I spend most of my time. Above all, it gives me a platform to do better in life and also builds my personality. I feel blessed to study in one of the most prestigious and esteemed schools in the city. In addition, my school has a lot of assets which makes me feel fortunate to be a part of it. Let us look at the essay on my school written below.

essay on my school

Why I Love My School?

From kindergarten through primary and secondary school, and subsequently, to faculty, school is a place where we always study, grow, and establish ourselves, socialize, be a friend, help others, and love and be loved. School is a buddy that will accompany us from the beginning of our youth till the conclusion of our lives. At school, we share all of our pleasures and sorrows, and we constantly rely on one another. This is made possible through the friendships we share. They assist us in effortlessly overcoming difficulties, sharing moments of enjoyment together, and looking forward to new paths.

My school strikes the perfect balance between modern education and vintage architecture. The vintage buildings of my school never fail to mesmerize me with their glorious beauty. However, their vintage architecture does not mean it is outdated, as it is well-equipped with all the contemporary gadgets. I see my school as a lighthouse of education bestowing knowledge as well as ethical conduct upon us.

Teachers have the power to make or break a school. The teaching staff is regarded as the foundation of any educational society. It is their efforts to help kids learn and understand things that instil good habits and values in their students. While some concepts are simple to grasp, others necessitate the use of a skilled teacher to drive the home the idea with each pupil.

In contrast to other schools, my school does not solely focus on academic performance. In other words, it emphasizes on the overall development of their students. Along with our academics, extra-curricular activities are also organized at our school. This is one of the main reasons why I love my school as it does not measure everyone on the same scale. Our hardworking staff gives time to each child to grow at their own pace which instils confidence in them. My school has all the facilities of a library , computer room, playground, basketball court and more, to ensure we have it all at our disposal.

For me, my school is more than simply an educational institution; it is also my second family, which I established during my childhood. A family of wonderful friends, outstanding teachers, and fond school memories. I adore my school because it is where I learn how to be a good citizen and how to reach my goals. School is the only place where we make friends without judging them. We feel comfortable spending time with those close friends no matter what the situation.

What has My School Taught Me?

If someone asked me what I have learned from my school, I won’t be able to answer it in one sentence. For the lessons are irreplaceable and I can never be thankful enough for them. I learned to share because of my school. The power of sharing and sympathy was taught to me by my school. I learned how to be considerate towards animals and it is also one of the main reasons why I adopted a pet.

essay the first day of my school

School is an excellent place to learn how to be an adult before entering the real world. Those abilities pay dividends whether you choose to be the bigger person in an argument or simply complete your domestic tasks. When you open your mind to new ideas, you gain a lot of influence in society. Picking up unexpected hobbies on your own will teach you more about what you like to do than simply completing things for a grade.

A school is a place where I developed my artistic skills which were further enhanced by my teachers. Subsequently, it led me to participate in inter-school completions through which I earned various awards. Most importantly, my school taught me how to face failures with grace and never give up on my ambitions, no matter what happens.

Schools also offer a variety of extracurricular activities such as Scouts and Guides, sports, N.C.C., skating, school band, acting, dancing, singing, and so on. Our principal also used to give us a short lecture every day for about 10 minutes about etiquette, character development, moral education, respecting others, and gaining excellent values. As a result, I can claim that what I am today is solely due to my school, which is the best institution in my opinion.

Teamwork is an important ability that schools teach. Schools are frequently the first places where youngsters have the opportunity to collaborate with children who are different from them. Collaboration is essential for the team and individual success. Students are taught that the success of a team depends on each individual component functioning together.

To sum it up, studying in one of the respected schools has helped me a lot personally. I will always be indebted to my school for shaping my personality and teaching me invaluable lessons. It has given me friends for life and teachers that I will always look up to. I aspire to carry on the values imbibed by my school to do well in life and make it proud.

A tutor shares 3 rules for writing college application essays, including how to use ChatGPT the right way

This story is available exclusively to business insider subscribers. become an insider and start reading now..

  • Carter Osborne started a side hustle tutoring students on their college admissions essays in 2017.
  • The Stanford graduate shared his recommendations for students looking to ace their personal essays.
  • He said students could use ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas by inputting their experiences and prompting it to ask questions.

Stanford graduate Carter Osborne started a side hustle tutoring high school students on their college application essays in 2017. He had 50 clients last year and made $114,000 from tutoring in 2023.

He quit his day job earlier this month, which he said he could only do because of his tutoring income.

Osborne shared three tips for students writing their college application essays with Business Insider — including how to use and not use AI chatbots.

1. Students should stick to their personal stories

Osborne told BI the key to writing college essays is making it personal. "What I always encourage my students to do is go off script. Find something personal about your life that nobody else could talk about, or at least an angle on something you've done that feels different," he said.

He added he viewed his job as helping high schoolers "tell compelling, interesting stories that are personal and expressive."

2. An AI chatbot like ChatGPT can help brainstorm — but it can't write it for you

Osborne would never write his students' essays for them, he said. Instead, he suggests revisions or edits based on topics they've discussed in meetings.

"The thought has to have come from my student," he said. "My job is to help them weave those thoughts together in the most compelling way."

If stuck, students could use an AI chatbot to help them develop an idea, Osborne said. "Tell it to pretend that it's a college admissions counselor, and ask it questions about what you should write about for your college essay," he suggested.

He said students could talk to it about their experiences and use it to help them brainstorm ideas for essay topics based on their achievements or experiences. He said they could input some personal information, values, and activities they do and prompt ChatGPT to ask them questions about themselves.

Some colleges have issued guidelines against using AI in the application process, while others have encouraged its use in brainstorming and editing their essays. Many colleges, however, have warned students against copying and pasting content from ChatGPT or other AI models.

Osborne said students should never use ChatGPT or other AI chatbots to write an essay , though, he said.

"It comes out feeling stock and flat. There's no life to it," he said. But AI can provide an outline to help students structure the first draft of their essays, he added.

After figuring out their idea, Osborne suggested students could ask ChatGPT to: "Provide an outline for a 650-word personal statement that's four or five paragraphs, and tell me what each section should be about."

3. A chatbot could also give you ideas for improving the first draft

Once students have written their first draft, if they don't have access to a tutor or an English teacher, they could ask ChatGPT what it thinks about it, he said.

They could prompt it to, "Imagine you're a college admissions counselor and react to this essay. What do you think about it? And provide several specific suggestions about how to improve it," he said.

Osborne said some of its suggestions might be bad, but some could be useful. The important thing is never to take what the AI says as a "firm recommendation" that you should follow but as ideas that you might consider, he added.

"Always bring that critical thinking to the process," he said.

Teachers must embrace open-mindedness and doubt

I n the fall of 2020, I taught a course at an independent high school in Boulder, Colorado , on persuasive essay writing. It won’t stun anyone familiar with the town, affectionately known by locals as the People’s Republic of Boulder, that I was the only openly non-progressive in the entire school, teacher or student. If there were any other non-progressives in the building, they wisely kept it to themselves.

This was in the aftermath of the summer of 2020, when anything short of total submission to progressive ideology was taken as a declaration of deplorability. If you weren’t actively “anti-racist” in a very particular way as defined by a very particular type of academic, you were considered one of the moral monsters populating “the wrong side of history.”

It was in this environment of extreme uniformity that I was tasked with teaching seniors the subtle art of persuasion through argument. We forget now how quickly civil discourse fell out of fashion among liberals at the time. A trio of psychologically traumatic events, the Trump presidency, George Floyd’s death, and the COVID-19 outbreak, had convinced them that the time for talk was over. Deep thinking on the part of anyone from the "oppressor class" was dubbed “intellectualization” — and you can be sure that all the students and teachers in the school at Boulder were white.

Perhaps subconsciously, I developed the course in such a way as to challenge the stultifying atmosphere directly. I was determined to make my students embrace the unthinkable: the possibility that they were wrong.

On the first day of class, I scrawled the following quote by John Stuart Mill across the whiteboard:

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not know so much as what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion.

In any prior moment in American history, Mill’s advocacy for intellectual rigor would be celebrated by liberals. But in my class, the quote drew disbelieving glances and uncomfortable murmuring. My announcement that students would need to write a well-researched and tightly reasoned essay arguing against their most deeply held conviction drew outright protestation. One student semi-tearfully commented that such a project would be tantamount to “literal violence.” Another said she would have a psychological breakdown if she were forced to defend the Second Amendment. A parent emailed me that night asking what I “was trying to prove.” The experience was demoralizing.

By the end of the first week, a handful of students flat-out refused to do the coursework as outlined. Following some difficult conversations, I agreed to amend the syllabus for those students. Perhaps I shouldn’t have, but since they were seniors and graduation was on the line, I caved.

But what I’ll always remember from the experience is the exemplary work done quietly by a number of students, including some of the most progressive “activist” types. One student, who was so politically minded that she had pro-choice slogans painted across the outside of her car, turned in a magnificently insightful essay that argued in favor of life. She later confided to me that the concept of “steelmanning,” which is the process of articulating the best possible argument of the other side, struck a chord with her. She understood that allowing herself the space to doubt her own presuppositions and uncover the best arguments of the opposition in full enabled her to become a more powerful advocate for the causes she held dear.

Another student who identified as “nonbinary” turned in an essay that argued for the utility of the gender binary. I remember feeling delightedly shocked by her willingness to engage with arguments when so many of her generation would refuse to consider what might “deny their existence.”

Despite the plummeting achievement and ideological uniformity that currently defines American education, I have remained hopeful thanks to the students from my persuasive essay class who took the intellectual risk of challenging their views — even if they kept their efforts to themselves. These students were brave enough to experience the state of doubt in order to be drawn deeper into the intellectual life.

For too long, students have been trained to follow the precepts of a single ideology when they should be educated to understand multiple viewpoints and respected enough to form their own views. In order to revivify the humanities, educators must once again heed Mill’s call to embrace open-mindedness and doubt.
