Top 5 duty stations in the Air Force
We’ve done the best bases for the Army , the Navy , and the Marine Corps, so Air Force, it’s your turn. While we’re sure there will be some disagreement back and forth due to the variability of what each person values, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 Air Force bases to be stationed at while serving in the United States Air Force.
1. Joint Base San Antonio, Texas
With two Air Force bases in the area, San Antonio tops our list. The cost of living in Texas is quite low and there are plenty of activities for both families and single airmen. It does get a little hot in the summertime, but San Antonio has realized that and there are four water parks to choose from as well as a multitude of lakes and water recreation areas. Combined with the friendly attitude towards the military in San Antonio, this combination easily tops our list.
2. Scott Air Force Base, Illinois
The great thing about Scott Air Force Base is that it fits whatever lifestyle you have. Whether you’re single or have a family, there is a nice mix of things to do. Located just outside of St. Louis, Missouri, on the Illinois side, service members can go to sporting events or enjoy the amenities of downtown life. If city living isn’t your thing, the quiet Midwest suburbs are perfect for you as well.
3. MacDill AFB, Florida
We’re not saying everywhere in Florida is nice, but this base is definitely a great place to be. Located right outside of Tampa, Florida, on a peninsula all it’s own, MacDill boasts some of the best weather (minus hurricanes) around. Couple the weather with all the beach and sporting amenities, it’s an outdoor-friendly base with beautiful ocean scenery.
4. Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio
Housing the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright-Patterson AFB is another great base to be stationed at. Located right in the middle of several major metropolitan areas, you can literally go almost anywhere for a weekend trip. From Chicago to Detroit to Indianapolis. Everything is nearby and there is plenty to do locally as well with museums and sports teams alike.
5. United States Air Force Academy, Colorado
Colorado Springs is just close enough and just far enough away from Colorado Springs and Denver to get all the big city amenities, without all of the big city hassles. Whether it’s winter or summertime there are always things to do in Colorado. You can mountain bike or ski/snowboard, take in a Rockies or Broncos game, or stay home and enjoy the picturesque mountain scenery.

A CAREER THAT INCLUDES COMMUNITY
Everything you need. nothing like you'd expect..
When you’re in the Air Force, you’re a part of a community that’s a lot like civilian communities everywhere around the country. In fact, Air Force bases are basically self-contained cities with everything you need to live and raise your family.

Most bases have full-size homes in residential areas on base for Airmen and their families. For those who are authorized to live off base, you’ll receive a housing allowance that can be used to pay for off-base housing.
To help you get accustomed to the military lifestyle, Airmen without families will start out living in dorms. Air Force dorms are similar to college dorms and have rec rooms, community kitchens, laundry facilities and oftentimes free Wi-Fi. All single Airmen in pay grades E-1 to E-3, and E-4s with less than three years of service, are provided unaccompanied on-base housing.
After you reach a certain amount of time living on base, you’ll be able to live off base if you choose. You’ll also receive a housing allowance depending on your rank and overall living needs.
Amenities on Base
Most bases have a wide range of amenities, ranging from day care to golf courses. However, each base is different, and the amenities may vary.

work-life balance
Life in the Air Force requires hard work, but also allows time for your own pursuits. Typically, you can expect an eight-hour workday, leaving plenty of time to relax, recharge and do other things you enjoy once you change out of uniform. For those in the Air National Guard or Air Force Reserve, you’re able to serve part time one weekend a month while keeping your civilian career or furthering your education.
LIFE ON DEPLOYMENT
Throughout your Air Force career, you can expect to be deployed out of the country at least once. The length of an Air Force deployment ranges from four to 12 months depending on an Airman’s specific job, location and mission requirements. However, even though you may be in a different country, you’ll receive similar benefits and accommodations you’re used to finding on base.
STAY CLOSE EVEN WHEN YOU’RE FAR AWAY
- WI-FI ANYWHERE No matter where you are stationed, there will always be communication options available (phone, email, video chat, etc.).
- FAMILY PROGRAMS Enlisted and officer clubs feature a full calendar of social events for members, spouses and guests. Bases sponsor activities for toddlers to teens and generally have youth centers where children can spend time in a safe environment.
- SPACE-AVAILABLE TRAVEL Airmen can take advantage of available space on Air Force aircraft when they wish to travel. We offer access to many international destinations as well as almost any state in the U.S.
- 30 DAYS LEAVE A YEAR No matter what stage you are in your Air Force career, you’re given 30 days of paid time off every year to enjoy however you please.
- AIR FORCE INN When you travel for work or have guests, you can take advantage of the on-base inn for rates that are less than what you’ll find off base.
LIFESTYLE FOR FAMILIES
The benefits of living on base are not just for the Airmen, but also their families. Whether it’s child care, a job or using any of the base’s facilities, we want to make sure you feel comfortable, well taken care of and right at home.
01 SPOUSE & FAMILY JOBS
02 grade school, 03 school age program, 04 youth sports teams, 05 child development center, lifestyle faqs, can i pick where i'll be stationed, how often would i move, can friends or family visit once i'm stationed at an air force base.
Yes. Bases offer on-base guest accommodations that enable family members to visit Airmen at a lower cost than what is available off base. Airmen can regularly entertain friends who live off base at on-base rec centers.
How often would I be on deployment?
While deployments are an opportunity for you to represent our country overseas, we understand it’s difficult to go so far away from loved ones. Deployments are a way of life for Airmen. Every 20 months, you may go on deployment. Plan to be deployed out of the country at least once in your Air Force career. The length of an Air Force deployment ranges from four to 12 months depending on an Airman’s specific job, location and mission requirements.

Most of the Air Force are in regular assignments (about 80%), while the rest are in 'special' assignments such as DSD jobs, joint positions, special hire, etc. This means that most people in the Air Force are at CONUS bases doing regular jobs. There is nothing wrong about that. These jobs also do not have any particular tour length.
