Run Baby Run review: RJ Balaji delivers an effective thriller with good twists
Run baby run review: rj balaji has managed an easy transition from comedy to thriller with this captivating new film..
Actor-filmmaker RJ Balaji, who has quietly charted his own path with films with a good dose of comedy, steps out of his comfort zone to attempt a new genre in Run Baby Run. It works as an effective thriller that gets the job done. What really makes Run Baby Run unique is that it’s not a hero-driven thriller where he’s doing all the heavy lifting and solving the mystery single-handedly. It’s a thriller that’s powered by some interesting characters and RJ Balaji, who plays the central character, just happens to be one of them.
The film opens with the suicide of a young medico Sophie (Smruthi Venkat) falling to death from her college building. Cut to the next shot, we are introduced to RJ Balaji (Sathya), who works in a multinational bank and is days away from getting married to Isha Talwar. As he’s busy with wedding shopping one day, he finds out that an unknown woman has sneaked into his car and he’s forced to bring her home. Upon inquiring, he learns that the girl is Thara (Aishwarya Rajesh), who reveals that her life is in danger and pleads to take refuge in his home for a few hours until her guardian arrives. After much contemplation, Sathya allows Thara to stay in his home, only to find her lying dead in his bathroom the next day. Sathya tries to dispose of Thara's body but he finds himself caught up in a messy situation.
This is a confident transition for RJ Balaji, who has so far safely played to his strengths, taking up comedy roles even when he was directing. He shines in this relentless thriller that never wastes a second and keeps the thrill alive till the last minute. The story kicks in from the opening frame and the proceedings keep you pinned till the very end. This is one of the biggest strengths of the film. Unlike most thrillers, Run Baby Run works to a large extent because it has multiple suspects and it succeeds in shifting the focus of the viewer from one suspect to another from time to time throughout the film.
Balaji, who has always been self-aware about his limitations as an actor, plays his part competently. It’s a believable performance of an ordinary guy stuck in an extraordinary situation and the story follows his efforts to free himself. Any other actor in his shoes would’ve expected his character to turn heroic at some point but thankfully RJ Balaji doesn’t fall in that image trap. The film definitely needed a better antagonist and a stronger twist but that’s just a minor grouse in an otherwise mostly compelling thriller. The supporting cast does a decent job in playing their respective parts fittingly.

RUN BABY RUN MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE
Run Baby Run (2023) is a Tamil action thriller written and directed by Jiyen Krishnakumar. RJ Balaji and Aishwarya Rajesh play the lead characters in the film. The film is produced by Lakshman Kumar under the banner Prince Pictures.
A simple man's life is turned into a nightmare when Tara, a medical student seeks him for help. This random encounter changes the life of the IT employee ruining his peace and the small world he is surrounded with. The rest of the film follows RJ Balaji trying to prove his innocence while attempting to reason with the events that unfold.
RJ Balaji and his new avatar in experimenting with different roles have kicked off well with this thriller. He is convincing as the innocent character caught in a maze yet there are miles to be achieved. Aishwarya Rajesh fits the role perfectly, but there is a lack of freshness in her characterization. Tamizh as police brings in the atmosphere of reality and relatability with his screen presence. The rest of the cast members do not carry many complaints as they have given what is asked out of them.
Technically the film is lifted by Yuva with his frames and Sam CS composing the tunes. The background score meets the chaotic undercurrent but becomes jarring on a few occasions. Slick editing saves the film from derailing in its touted route.
Positive aspects include the script being true to the thriller genre. It does not tend to overplay with its content but acts accordingly. Packed with a lot of twists, the film engages decently. The phone conversation between Radhika and RJ Balaji deserves a special mention for its subtlety.
Dialogues break the engaging factor as characters are made to speak in a single-dimensional way. Most of the dialogue reminds us that it is all happening in a film disrupting the relatability of the content. The second half solidifies the film with the loose threads starting to overlap with each other. The final reveal and the way it is handled shows the maturity of the script which does not make a superhero out of RJ Balaji.
The pacing of the film could have been enhanced and trimmed as it seemed stretched. Using conventional tropes of a thriller film in a decent way saves the film from monotony. Though the film has contrived situations it tries to keep us engaged.
On the whole, Run Baby Run delivers its content at a level that falls short of its standard. RJ Balaji holds the film on his shoulders with his seemingly innocent look and measured dialogue delivery.

Run Baby Run Movie Review: Solid making glosses over the loopholes
Rating: ( 3 / 5).
Jiyen Krishnakumar's Run Baby Run wastes no time in setting the mood right for the audience. From the word, 'go', the film places us in the shoes of the protagonist Sathya. We see the crime happen through his eyes and also unravel the mystery along with him. It doesn't take us a lot of time to root for the lead character as he is vulnerable enough to be framed but smart enough to get away from it. When I say smart, it doesn't translate to photographic memory or super spy skills, but the impressive damage control he does throughout. Interestingly, the first half of the film concentrates solely on how Sathya (RJ Balaji) does away with a dead body. The focus of the audience is unwaveringly set on him as his want is very clear and personal. He has one night to dispose of the corpse and get his hands clean. This simple yet effective premise is ably supported by the technical crew — cinematographer S Yuva, editor G Madhan and composer Sam CS — who work in unison and do a brilliant job in animating the tension surrounding that night. Director: Jiyen Krishnakumar
Cast: RJ Balaji, Aishwarya Rajesh, George Mariam, Tamizh With Run Baby Run hitting the ground running with well-orchestrated and grounded scenes, it is a tad disappointing that the film has a tonal shift post the interval. The 'how did he get away with the murder?' angle changes to an 'every character is a suspect' narrative. The intrigue brought to the table by the groundedness so far gets dampened by the force-fit twists in the second half of the film. If you are the kind that loves red herrings, regardless of their pay-off, the latter portions of Run Baby Run are a treasure trove. Almost all the knots that keep adding up throughout are untangled in the last few minutes of the film, with a customary walk-through monologue by the protagonist. These writing choices aren't entirely blasphemous but without a doubt, they feel inferior to the standard the film set for itself initially. Though the screenplay goes through a tonal shift, the performances continue to be restrained. This conscious decision of the filmmaker works in favour of the film as it keeps our attention anchored on the characters despite the randomness in the storytelling. RJ Balaji, who was considered to be the oddest addition to this true-blue thriller, gets the meatiest role in his career and he shoulders it quite convincingly. Sathya, the soft-spoken restrained banker who gets caught in a web of crime, sounds like a tailor-made role for someone like Arulnithi. Balaji, very much like Arulnithi, is a limited yet self-aware actor. In his first full-fledged serious script, Balaji cleverly chooses a role that demands him to be subdued for most of the runtime. While we see Balaji labour through emotional scenes, especially while sharing the screen with veterans like Radikaa, there are clear signs of progress. I also liked how his action scenes don't position him as a saviour, but as a man of wit who chooses defence any day and is extremely observant of his surroundings. Aishwarya Rajesh, who was positioned as one of the leads of the film, actually does an extended cameo. Despite her brief appearance as Thara, the story revolves around her character and very soon we realise why the film demanded a performer like her. As with most thrillers, Run Baby Run also has its share of cinematic liberties and loopholes. But the one that sticks out is Thara and Sathya almost pulling off a Theri Vijay by revealing their plans and secrets to the antagonist. The film which starts as a single person's quest to return to normalcy tries hard to end as a battle for a social cause. The message Run Baby Run conveys isn't novel either as there have been a couple of films made in the recent past based on the same issue. I believe the best statement a good film can make to the audience is simply not making one and staying true to its original flavour.

Run Baby Run Movie Review: This RJ Balaji-Starrer Keeps You Hooked Till The End
Curated By : Entertainment Bureau
Local News Desk
Last Updated: February 04, 2023, 20:55 IST
Chennai, India
Followed by an engaging second half, the thriller will keep you hooked for sure.
The Tamil language thriller-drama is receiving a positive response from the audience.
Tamil action-thriller Run Baby Run, starring south superstars RJ Balaji and Aishwarya Rajesh, released in cinemas this weekend. Directed by Jiyen Krishnakumar, the film is quite impressive, and looks completely different from Balaji’s previous movies. The intense first half surprises the viewers with twists and turns, while the mystery unfolds in the climax. Followed by an engaging second half, the thriller will keep you hooked for sure.
The film opens with the suicide of a young woman (a medical student), falling to death from her college building. Next, we are introduced to Sathya (RJ Balaji), who works in a multinational bank and is getting married soon. One day, when he goes out for his wedding shopping, he suddenly comes across an unknown woman named Thara (Aishwarya Rajesh). She is seen being forced inside a car by someone. Sathya helps her during the tussle. But, he finds out after a few days that Thara has died. The story is surrounded by mysteries. It focuses on the troubles Sathya faces, and his efforts to escape from them. The events that take place after this death and the consequences this young man faces, is the main storyline of the movie.
Balaji has chosen a story that departs from his usual comedy films like Mookuthi Amman and Veetla Visesam. The actor, after featuring in several comedy dramas, opted to do a thriller film for the first time. What really makes Run Baby Run unique is that it’s a hero-driven thriller drama, where Balaji is doing all the heavy lifting and solving the mystery single-handedly.
The length of this film is 2 hours and 10 minutes. RJ Balaji has acted perfectly to suit the character and the film’s story. Scenes for other characters are limited, including that of actors Aishwarya Rajesh, Radhika and Isha Talwar. They too have done their job well.
Run Baby Run’s music has been composed by Sam CS. His background music has added to the film’s strengths. The screenplay and visual settings of the film could have been designed in a better way. Run Baby Run would have been commendable, had the narrative been carried out in a more vibrant way.
Overall the film has been receiving a positive response, and is set to become another success for RJ Balaji. The positive reviews have helped the film to get decent occupancy on day 1. The movie has also occupied a decent number of screens in cinemas.

Run Baby Run review: RJ Balaji’s effective crime mystery loses steam in the second half
Run baby run is another tamil crime mystery that fails to quench the excitement the set-up creates..
Run Baby Run comes across as two different films. The first part is a solid thriller about an everyday bank employee named Sathya (RJ Balaji), who finds himself caught in a murder mystery when he tries to help a perturbed woman Thara (Aishwarya Rajesh) who sneaks into his car. Sathya goes shopping one day to buy a gift for his fiance. While returning he picks her up and heads to her home, and suddenly finds a woman hiding in his car. Within a few hours, his life gets changed forever.
The whole set-up is engrossing and brilliantly structured. The rewarding part of it all is that a lot is shown than said. Every scene, though the film is pretty racy, takes its time to convey things, which is pretty seamless. In a matter of minutes, Run Baby Run effortlessly acquires our attention and investment. It incites empathy for its protagonist and we wish he gets out of this disaster in one piece. One also badly hopes that all this brilliant set-up, especially the deliberately-paced pre-interval segment, will pay off.
Music composer Sam CS does a lot to Run Baby Run. Though the blaring background score ostentatiously stands out and begs for your attention, it helps the mood of the film, which at times gets into the supernatural zone. However, post the interval, like many of our Tamil films, things start to fizzle out. The screenplay is not seamless anymore. There’s a lack of consistency too. The initial threat to the protagonist, which felt omnipresent and omnipotent, loses its consistency. We painfully watch a brilliant premise descend into a generic thriller with the usual motive and a stereotypical villain. Then there’s a huge change of pace. While the predominant portion of the first part was about the whole journey of the protagonist and the way he gets rid of the body, the second part just gets past several major developments in a hurry. There’s no ‘showing’ anymore, but a lot of telling.
While Sathya, as he claims, was just an average person in the first half, he quickly becomes a hero in the next. The unnecessary fight sequence has no reason to exist in this film, which was trying to stay sober as much as possible. One might argue it was realistically choreographed, but the point is the movie never needed one in the first place. Then there are the contrivances that make it a lot easier for the hero. It all looks hurried. The huge issue with Run Baby Run is the lack of a solid motive and a stronger antagonist. The threat which was initially personal becomes a social issue. It is time heroes and filmmakers realise they need not always save the world. Sometimes saving a decent film from becoming a mediocre affair is good enough.

Run Baby Run Movie Review: RJ Balaji, Aishwarya Rajesh’s thriller manages to offer little thrill
Director jiyen krishnakumar’s run babu run, starring rj balaji and aishwarya rajesh, starts on a promising note but eventually fizzles out. some serious moments in the film end up being funny, says our review..
Listen to Story
- Run Baby Run is directed by Jiyen Krishnakumar.
- RJ Balaji and Aishwarya Rajesh play lead roles in the film.
- The film hits the theatres on February 3.
Release Date: 3 Feb, 2023
RJ Balaji’s transition from playing a supporting role to a lead role is a case study in itself. He took up the onus of writing the screenplay and co-directing as well. And he established himself as a promising talent with LKG, Mookuthi Amman and Veetla Vishesham. For RJ Balaji, Run Baby Run is a new attempt as it’s his first thriller film as a lead.
Run Baby Run begins with the suicide of Sophie (Smruthi Venkat), who dies after falling from a high-rise building. We are then introduced to Sathya (RJ Balaji), who works at a bank and is looking forward to his marriage to Isha Talwar. While going on a drive with his fiancé, he finds out that Thara (Aishwarya Rajesh) is hiding inside his car.
She then follows him to his house and forces him to allow her inside as she is in deep trouble. After much thought, Sathya allows her inside, only to find her dead the next day. When he tries to dispose of her remains, he gets entangled in a tricky situation. The rest of the film answers several questions related to Thara, Sathya and Sophie.
Writer and director Jiyen Krishnakumar had a solid plot and built it gradually. The film shows us different episodes in the first few minutes, which gives room for many questions. These questions are answered as the story progresses. The first half of the film is quite engaging with the suspense factor. However, there are moments where the viewers will have to believe the crazy coincidences. For example, in a scene, RJ Balaji’s Sathya senses that he will be in trouble if he lets Thara stay in her home. But, he decides to go ahead with it anyway and won’t bother to even check if she leaves. This is reasoned out in the second half but remains unconvincing.
The second half of Run Baby Run has some delicious twists. While some of the twists land nicely, the other twists end up being unintentionally funny. In places, the logic goes for a toss and you are forced to look past the flaws to enjoy the film.
It is quite refreshing to see RJ Balaji play a serious role throughout. He delivered a decent performance as Sathya. In certain places, he still has scope to improve as an actor and make the entire act more convincing. Aishwarya Rajesh’s Thara is a headstrong woman and this role is a cakewalk for the performer she is. However, we wish that she had more screen time, so we can understand more about her character. Raj Ayyappa and Smruthi Venkat, in their roles, did their best.
After Jiyen Krishnakumar, composer Sam CS managed to impress everyone with his work. His background music enhanced the thrill factor for the most part. However, in certain places, the music was jarring.
Run Baby Run exposes a doctored crime in the climax and one would be able to buy the twists as it comes out of nowhere.

Run Baby Run Review
PUBLISHED DATE : 03/Feb/2023
Run Baby Run is a whodunit thriller starring RJ Balaji and Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead roles. Directed by debutant Jiyen Krishnakumar and the music is composed by Sam.C.S.
RJ Balaji is an innocent youngster who works in a bank. Aishwarya Rajesh is being chased by strangers and she is found dead mysteriously in RJ Balaji's apartment. What happens after this forms the remaining story.
Writing/ Direction:
Gets the focus correct by getting into the story from the very first frame. Although the opening shots make us worry about the directorial skills, the proceedings are convincing. The approach in the first half is realistic and moves at an unhurried pace. Though there are no powerful high points, the flow is pulsating as the intensity is very much on. The screenplay till the first half is gripping and the halfway pause occurs when the curiosity level is right. The usual cheap-thrills click too at times. The core crime of the movie is interesting, but the issue lies in how it is conveyed. Things become disastrous when the hunt for the reasoning begins, which is right after the interval. The problem of convenient writing exists throughout the film, but it tends to get disturbing when the engagement is absent in the latter. The clues and progress that is showcased to attain the top floor are so random. Whatever that comes in hand has been thrown on us and the make-belief factor is taken for granted. Huge disconnect forms in the second half which make us lose interest in knowing the actual truth. The twists are so weak mainly because of the substandard way the supporting characters have been designed. The climax and villain reveal make the happenings a big joke.
Performances:
RJ Balaji has delivered a decent performance, he is good with silence and sophistication, but underwhelming when asked to cry and looks odd when he tries to express seriousness. Cakewalk role for Aishwarya Rajesh and she has done it well. Many other known faces have done neatly but they were not provided with good enough roles to excel.
Technicalities:
Such a fine piece of camera work, we get to have that small sense of connection with the film mainly because of how well the geography is established in every scene. Montage songs are dull and even Sam.C.S’ background score isn’t commendable enough, somehow manages to drive the vehicle smoothly till a point. Badly edited, shot follow-ups go for a toss and there is so much confusion with respect to the scene order towards the end.
Though it doesn’t create a high-level investment, the first hour manages to engage well with an usual thriller genre yet neat flow. But the later half is a complete bummer in the name of showing the truth to the world with vague storytelling.

Sathya works for a bank, and he is getting ready to marry his lover. When he dreams about his marriage and returns home, he gets shocked to see Tara, a medical college student hiding inside his car. She has none, and as she exposes a biggie, she is in trouble and seeks help from Sathya. Sathya permits her to stay in his residence after hearing her story. But, to his shock, Tara is killed, and Sathya calls his cop friend, Jaiganesh. Jai suggests Sathya dump Tara’s body. Kabir Ahmed, who handles the case, suspects Sathya. What will be his next move? Will Sathya escape from his vision? The rest of the story deals with it.
Star Performance
This is a different avatar from Balaji. He has done a perfect job as a middle-class guy. Aishwarya Rajesh is perfect with her role, as usual. Her body language, expressions, and dialogue delivery are fantastic. Radhika Sarathkumar and Isha Talwar got a limited screen presence. Vivek Prasanna is decent in the given role, and Tamizh is good too.
The director has brought a thriller story with a fast-paced screenplay. The director didn’t take much time to reveal the characters and got into the story quickly. The star selection is outstanding. Yet, some of the characters could’ve been given some more screen time. The film is visually pleasing, and the editing is perfect. The BGM by Sam CS is excellent. It is a bit disturbing to see the lead character doing stunts like a hero when the first half of the film showcased him as a normal boy next door. However, these cinematic transformations are acceptable to maintain the thrill.
What’s There?
- Neat story and execution
- RJ Balaji and Aishwarya Rajesh’s performances are good
- The film is technically sound
What’s Not There?
- A few loopholes
Though the film has some logical loopholes here and there, the director didn’t fail to engage the audience from the beginning to the climax. If you love watching thriller films, then you can watch the movie for sure. RJ Balaji’s new avatar is good!
